US‑Iran tensions have surged as President Trump issued a 48‑hour ultimatum to Iran to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz — threatening to obliterate Iranian power plants if Tehran fails to comply. At the same time, Iran launched one of its most destructive missile barrages on Israel since the war began, striking key regions and escalating regional conflict with deadly force.

US-Iran War: Trump Threatens To 'Obliterate' Iran's Energy Sector

India has aggressively increased Russian oil purchases in March 2026. The country bought roughly 30 million barrels of oil from Moscow following West Asia disruptions caused by the US-Iran war. That comes after a temporary US waiver.

Hormuz Crisis Drives India to Binge on Russian Oil

The United States is reportedly considering plans to blockade or seize Iran’s Kharg Island, a critical oil export hub, as tensions escalate in the ongoing US-Iran war. The move is aimed at pressuring Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route for oil.

The Indian government has increased gas allocation to states and Union Territories to 50 per cent of pre-crisis levels, with an additional 20 per cent supply to be implemented from March 23, according to a communication from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. In a letter to all State and UT Chief Secretaries, Petroleum Secretary Dr Neeraj Mittal said that the enhanced allocation aims to support key sectors, particularly those linked to food supply and public welfare. Offering further respite to commercial establishments running short of liquified petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has decided to allocate States an additional 20 per cent of their average monthly requirement of commercial LPG. In simple terms, the government is releasing more cooking gas for businesses (like restaurants and hotels) because the supply shortage is easing up. With more gas available, eateries can operate normally without worrying as much about running out or relying on expensive alternatives. To get this extra gas, businesses are being told they eventually need to switch to piped gas (PNG) instead of relying only on cylinders. Also Read: Iran War: US LPG Cargo Ship Arrives In Mangaluru, 16,714 Tonnes Unloaded In a notice on Saturday (March 22), Mittal said, “The supply of LPG continues to be a concern in view of prevailing geopolitical situation. UK approves US use of its bases for strikes on Iranian sites targeting Strait of Hormuz

The United States has launched a major military offensive to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil chokepoint, after Iran disrupted shipping routes during the ongoing war. US forces, including A-10 attack aircraft, Apache helicopters, and naval units, are targeting Iranian boats, drones, and missile positions to restore safe passage.

US-Iran War: US Launches Offensive to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

The United States has launched a major military blitz to secure and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, deploying over 8,000 service members amid escalating tensions in the US-Iran war. The strategic waterway, a critical artery for global oil shipments, has faced repeated disruptions due to missile threats, drone attacks, and naval confrontations.

US President Donald Trump on Friday (March 20) sharply criticised NATO allies, calling them ‘cowards’ for not supporting Washington’s push for military action against Iran to secure the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has sent mixed signals in recent days, at times insisting the US can secure the vital shipping route alone, while also accusing allies of failing to step up. "Without the USA, NATO IS A PAPER TIGER!" Trump posted on his Truth Social network. "They didn't want to join the fight to stop a nuclear-powered Iran. Now that the fight is Militarily WON, with very little danger for them, they complain about the high oil prices they are forced to pay, but don't want to help open the Strait of Hormuz, a simple military maneuver that is the single reason for the high oil prices. “So easy for them to do, with so little risk. The 79-year-old Republican, a longtime critic of the alliance, has intensified his attacks on NATO in recent days. On Thursday, six major powers, including Britain, France, Germany, and Japan, said they were prepared to ‘contribute to appropriate efforts’ to secure the Strait of Hormuz. However, no formal commitment has been made to participate in any mission in the critical waterway. Some allies, including Germany and Italy, have said they will not take action until a ceasefire is reached in the Middle East conflict. https://www.wionews.com/videos/india-fuel-crisis-regular-petrol-price-unchanged-but-premium-price-hiked-1774014300276/embed Notably, none of the countries Trump has urged to assist were consulted before the joint US-Israeli operation. An Iranian blockade has effectively halted commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route that typically handles about 20% of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas flows. Oil prices worldwide have surged following the conflict, which began on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran, prompting retaliatory attacks by Tehran across the Gulf region. Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations, and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. Donald Trump brands NATO allies ‘cowards’ for not aiding US efforts in the Strait of Hormuz as Iran tensions disrupt global oil supplies

Two American warships - USS Tulsa and USS Santa Barbara - were stationed in the Persian Gulf for the larger part of February. But, sometime around the time the Iran war escalated, they vanished. They were operating from Naval Support Activity Bahrain as a core component of the US Fifth Fleet’s mine-countermeasures force. As the Iran crisis intensified, both vessels could no longer be tracked in the regional waters, Indian Defence Review reported. Both ships are equipped with specialised mine countermeasures (MCM) mission packages, which means they can find, identify, and destroy underwater mines. Both of them reached Bahrain within the last year to fill the gap left behind by the Avenger-class wooden-hulled minesweepers that were retired. Meanwhile, Iran is now laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz to prevent ships from passing by. Their absence has raised questions about American mine countermeasure capacity in the Middle East.
USS Tulsa and USS Santa Barbara seen in Malaysia
So where are the two warships at such a critical juncture? According to a picture taken by a spotter named Sherwynd Kessler, the combat ships are docked at the North Butterworth Container Terminal in Penang, Malaysia, more than 3,500 nautical miles away from their last known station. Two photos taken by a Defense Visual Information Distribution Service show the Tulsa in Manama, Bahrain, on February 9, and USS Santa Barbara in the Persian Gulf on January 30. But then The War Zone reported, citing satellite imagery, that there were no ships in the port at Bahrain. Both the vessels were likely moved to prevent any damage from Iranian missiles and drones. Also Read: Trump mulling Kharg Island takeover to force Iran to open Strait of Hormuz: Report

A strategic failure when Iran is laying mines in Strait of Hormuz
Joe Hontz, a spokesperson for the Naval Forces Central Command, told The War Zone that the ships are "conducting brief logistical stops in Malaysia." He added that "US forces routinely make port calls in Malaysia as part of our operations, reflecting the close and enduring military cooperation between the United States and Malaysia." Their departure leaves a significant gap in the Navy's mine countermeasure (MCM) capabilities in the Middle East at a time when Iran is laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The US military said it has been targeting structures that lay mines. However, to remove the mines that have already been laid requires specialised equipment. Also Read: UAE-Tabled, India-Backed: Nations express concern over closure of Hormuz at UN Maritime Body https://www.wionews.com/videos/can-red-sea-replace-strait-of-hormuz-capacity-vs-reality-1774011558298/embed USS Tulsa and USS Santa Barbara have this ability. The Red Sea cannot fully replace the Strait of Hormuz as a global oil route due to severe capacity limits and security risks, serving only as a temporary partial workaround. While Saudi Arabia's Petroline can divert some exports to the Red Sea, its capacity is roughly 3–7 million barrels/day—far less than the 18–21 million barrels/day that routinely flow through the Strait of Hormuz.

Amid the escalating Iran war, global energy supply chains are facing fresh disruption as China-bound vessels carrying Russian oil are being rerouted mid-voyage. Ship-tracking data suggests several tankers have altered routes due to rising security risks in the Strait of Hormuz, where attacks on shipping and restricted access have heightened uncertainty.
