The battle for Golf supremacy has moved out of the corporate boardrooms with the LIV Golf Series set to get underway on Thursday. Two-time Major winner Dustin Johnson and 2017 Masters Champion Sergio Garcia have resigned from the PGA Tour while Tiger Woods has rejected a figure approaching a Billion dollars to join the Saudi Arabia-backed series. Six-time Major winner Phil Mickelson has also ended his sabbatical to embark on a new start. Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo discussed the implications of those decisions with Martin Dempster, Chairman, Association of Golf Writers.

A professional Columbian cyclist, named Luis Carlos Chia, emerged on top in a race, however, his celebrations were short-lived in what led to a bizarre incident soon after. At the finish line, he crashed straight into his wife who was busy taking pictures of her husband's sweet victory.

It was a hard-fought race that saw Chia end at the top and his bicycle kept moving ahead into a group of photographers, which also included his wife. Much to his dismay, he crashed into her and led to a severe injury to his life partner.

India`s boy wonder Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa came up with another sensational performance as he defeated Dutch Grandmaster Anish Giri to storm into the final of the Chessable Masters, the fourth leg of the USD1.6 million Champions Chess Tour.

The 16-year-old from Chennai showed off all his skills as he simply overpowered the super-strong Dutch No.1 Giri to set up a summit clash with China`s World No. 2 Ding Liren, who stunned World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in the other semifinal.

Praggnanandhaa took lead with a checkmate in the second game of the best-of-four games semifinal encounter. But after two draws, Giri, a Dutch GM of Nepalese origin, returned the favour in the must-win fourth game to draw level at 2-2.

However, he blundered in the first tiebreak game and Pragg capitalised on it to win 2-2, 1.5-0.5. With this win, Praggnanandhaa also sealed his place in the season finale of the Champions Chess Tour, which will be played in November this year.

Giri had gone into the match unbeaten and in red-hot form having topped the USD150,000 event`s Prelim stage leaderboard. But the 29-year-old ran into one of the world`s top talents truly coming of age. Incredibly, schoolboy Pragg has something equally important to do first on Wednesday -- he has to tackle his class 11th exams.

"I have to be at school around 8:45am. And now it`s 2am," he was quoted as saying by the organisers, the Play Magnus Group. And then after the exams a few hours of rest, he will be back at his computer for the final clash with Ding Liren.

Tuesday`s semifinal clashes delivered incredible drama as they involved the four top players from the Prelim stage, all in great form. Pragg`s match with Giri caught fire in the second game after a tame first encounter ended in a draw.

The youngster set Giri a deadly trap in the endgame and the 29-year-old missed the only defence. Checkmate was guaranteed and Pragg took the lead. Giri had lost his first game of the tournament, the organisers said in a release.

The third game was another cracker. With Giri needing a win, the advantage switched several times. As Giri looked set to break through in the endgame, Pragg found a way to dig in and force a draw. The youngster was 2-1 in front with one game to go.

An astonishingly tricky game that followed let Giri back in. Pragg defended brilliantly but one slip when the position was on a knife`s edge and Giri was onto it. The game ended with a beautiful checkmate on the board and the match locked at 2-2 and heading to tiebreaks.

Then it all went wrong for Giri. He blundered badly in the first blitz game of the play-off with a queen move (32. Qc2), handing Pragg double attack that led to a piece capture. Giri resigned in a hopeless position and looked despondent.

But the Dutchman wasn`t out yet. The second blitz game saw Giri on top before another slip gifted Pragg a pawn. There was no way back. A draw was agreed, but it was the same as a win for Pragg who was through to the final.

In contrast, Carlsen vs Ding was a match of extreme, slow-burning pressure. To add to the intensity, Carlsen found himself plagued early on by internet connection problems at his base for this event in Skagen, Denmark.

After three tense draws, where both players probed but couldn`t crack their opponents` defences, it all came down to the fourth and final game.

And then, a moment no one expected: Carlsen cracked. Ding broke through and went on to win. Carlsen had failed to make the final for the first time in the 2022 Tour.

Carlsen, however, presented a brave front. "I`m ok. I`m really disappointed with my play in the last game, but I think overall this match could have gone either way. I`ve played a lot of close matches with Ding and this one went his way which is disappointing but, yeah, that`s what it is," Carlsen was quoted s saying by the organisers.

A triumphant Ding, playing from Wengzhou in China, said he was "very happy" and the result was "unbelievable".

Ding added, "I`ve played him so many times and I haven`t beaten him in any of the knockout stage in the Champions Chess Tour. It`s my first time."

World number one Iga Swiatek retained her Italian Open title after overwhelming Ons Jabeur 6-2 6-2 in Rome on Sunday, clinching her fifth consecutive WTA crown and winning her 28th match in a row.
Having swept the titles in Doha, Indian Wells and Miami, Swiatek has now won every WTA 1000 tournament she has contested this season and will be the favourite to add to her 2020 French Open success when the Grand Slam tournament begins next week.

Swiatek outmanoeuvred Jabeur to snap the Tunisian`s 11-match winning streak, which began in her title run in Madrid, to level their head-to-head record at 2-2 after having lost both 2021 meetings at Wimbledon and Cincinnati. "Today I`m going to celebrate with a lot of tiramisu, no regrets," said Poland`s Swiatek, who collapsed on the red clay at Foro Italico and broke down in tears after securing the title.

"I just felt huge relief... I was just really happy that I could cope with all the pressure and expectations so well," she told reporters later. "I have emotional reactions, but this one was probably the most emotional after winning the title. "I mean, why not? It`s a week of tension and stress. Finally letting go (after that), for me that`s okay."

In the pair`s first meeting on clay, Swiatek was barely troubled by world number seven Jabeur in the opening stages of the match and comfortably held her serve to race into a commanding 3-0 lead.
Jabeur tested her 20-year-old opponent at 4-2 but Swiatek dug herself out of a 0-30 hole to hold from deuce and take the game before wrapping up the set on her second set point when the Tunisian whipped a forehand into the net.

The second set started off in similar fashion, with Jabeur proving no match for Swiatek`s power and mobility from the baseline as the Pole cruised 4-0 ahead. Jabeur won the next two games and looked set for another but Swiatek held from 0-40 down, saving four break points and closed out the game on her first serve before a backhand into the net from the Tunisian ended her resistance.

"Iga, mentally she was really good. She was always aggressive," Jabeur said. "No matter what the score is, always going forward, putting pressure on the other player. That I think is very important. "Iga is the number one for a reason. She`s really the leader here on tour. I personally have a lot to learn from her. Hopefully we`ll have another match soon."

A look at what's happening in European soccer on Sunday

Rafa Nadal said that everyday training was a challenge and he would take a doctor with him to Roland Garros after the 21-times major winner was once again hampered by a chronic foot injury in his defeat by Denis Shapovalov at the Italian Open on Thursday.

Nadal, who only recently returned from a stress fracture in the ribs, struggled badly at the back end of his match against the Canadian as he went down 1-6 7-5 6-2 in the last-16. "I had my foot again with a lot of pain. I am a player living with an injury - it is nothing new. It`s something that is there," Nadal, a 10-times champion in Rome, told reporters.

"Unfortunately, my day-by-day is difficult, honestly. Even like this, I am trying hard... it can be frustrating that a lot of days I can`t practice the proper way." The 35-year-old missed the bulk of last season due to the foot problem before mounting a remarkable comeback to win the Australian Open in January and also prevailing in Acapulco.

Nadal`s preparation heading into the French Open, where he will be bidding for a record-extending 14th title, has been far from ideal after he was also knocked out of last week`s Madrid Open by Carlos Alcaraz at the quarter-finals stage.

"First thing that I need to do is to don`t have pain to practice... it`s true that during the French Open, Roland Garros, I going to have my doctor there with me. Liverpool kept pace with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League after a 2-0 win at home over local rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby. While the win late on Sunday means Liverpool are just a point behind City as they look to win four titles this season, Everton drop into the bottom three after Burnley`s win earlier in the day.

Liverpool had 82 per cent of the ball against their neighbours, but it was not until the 62nd minute that left-back Andrew Robertson opened the scoring with a header. Luis Diaz was the provider of Liverpool`s second goal with a spectacular overhead kick that sat up perfectly for Divock Origi to seal the win, Xinhua reports.

Earlier, Gabriel Jesus scored four goals as Manchester City cruised past relegation-haunted Watford 5-1.

The Brazilian scored in the 4th, 23rd and 52nd minutes, and also netted a 49th-minute penalty as Pep Guardiola`s side enjoyed an easy ride ahead of Tuesday`s Champions League semifinal first leg against Real Madrid.

Hassani Kamara gave Watford brief hope with his goal in the 28th minute, but Rodri`s 34th minute goal for City quickly put the game out of reach.

Christian Pulisic scored a 90th minute goal to give Chelsea a 1-0 win at home over West Ham and spare Jorginho`s blushes. The Brazilian had missed a penalty a minute earlier after Craig Dawson, who was sent off, pulled down Romelu Lukaku to deny him a goalscoring opportunity.

Arsenal moved fourth and virtually ended Manchester United`s slim hopes of a top-four finish with a 3-1 win at the Emirates Stadium, thanks to first half goals from Nuno Tavares and Bukayo Saka, who scored a penalty.

Although the 100th Premier League goal of Cristiano Ronaldo`s career gave United hope in the 34th minute, Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty for the visitors, and Granit Xhaka assured a big win for Arsenal with 20 minutes left to play.

Tottenham were lucky to take a 0-0 draw away to Brentford, who had former Spurs player Christian Eriksen in their starting 11.

Brentford had the best chances with Harry Kane clearing one ball off the line, while Ivan Toney hit headers off the woodwork.

Matej Vydra`s goal from the edge of the six-yard box gave Burnley their second win in two games as they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Turf Moor. The win lifts Burnley out of the bottom three and means they have taken two wins and a draw since Sean Dyche`s 10-year tenure as coach came to an end.

Newcastle United continued their excellent second half to the season and have won 10 of their last 14 games thanks to a 3-0 win away to Norwich that came from two goals from Joelinton and one from Bruno Guimaraes.

Brighton and Southampton shared four goals in an entertaining south coast derby, with James Ward-Prowse scoring in first-half injury time and in the 54th minute to cancel out Danny Welbeck`s early opener and Mohammed Salisu`s 44th minute goal for the home side.

Leicester City and Aston Villa drew a forgettable game 0-0, although the result at least ended a run of four consecutive defeats for the visitors.

The English Premier League has welcomed the `Online Safety Bill`, which it hopes will receive strong support from MPs during this week`s Second Reading in the House of Commons, so that online abuse -- a serious issue in football -- can be curbed.

A statement put out by Premier League on Monday said that, "Online abuse is a serious issue in football, from the grassroots and throughout the professional game and we commend the government for bringing forward this world-first legislation to create a safer online environment and hold social media companies to account."

The government has strengthened the bill in a number of important areas, and the Premier League said it welcomed the designation of `hate crime` as priority illegal content.

"We welcome the designation of hate crime as priority illegal content on the face of the Bill, which means that platforms have an active duty to minimise exposure to such content. We welcome the new anonymity provisions, which mean that ID verification must be offered as an option and users will have greater control over who can contact them and what they see online," said the Premier League statement.

"We are pleased that the government has accepted the Law Commission`s recommendations to reform the communications offences to include threatening and harassing behaviour online more clearly and that these will be included in the bill. This legislation is a promising first step towards creating a new era of accountability online," said PL in the statement.

The Australian state of Victoria will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games across four regional hubs in a break from the traditional single-city model, the government said on Tuesday. With no other countries outside Australia making a bid, Victoria was granted an exclusive negotiating period to secure the Games in February.

"It’s a great honour to have Victoria chosen as the host venue for the 2026 Commonwealth Games -- we can’t wait to welcome the world to all of our state," Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said. Victoria capital Melbourne hosted the 2006 Games and will stage the 2026 opening ceremony at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, but the sports will be spread far and wide. Each of the regional hubs in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Gippsland will have their own athletes` village.

Geelong, a port city an hour southwest of Melbourne, will host swimming, gymnastics, beach volleyball and other sports. Ballarat and Bendigo, goldfield cities in central Victoria, will have athletics, boxing, netball, squash and weightlifting. The Gippsland region in eastern Victoria will have rugby sevens, badminton and cycling. Twenty20 cricket has also been included in a core group of 16 sports.

Other sports may yet be added to the programme, which could mean other locations hosting events, the government said. "It is different,” Andrews told reporters in Melbourne on Tuesday. "I’m sure from (Commonwealth Games authorities`) point of view, it’s a bit riskier than just running it in the middle of a large city."But to do this and to do it well – and we will – there’s an opportunity here ... an opportunity like no other."

RUNWAY FOR 2032
The quadrennial Games, a multi-sport gathering for mostly former British colonies, has struggled to remain relevant, with four of the last five editions held in Australia or Britain.
Australia, however, relishes its athletes` dominance in a relatively weak pool of nations, and fans flocked to the well-organised Gold Coast Games in 2018.

Victoria will be used as a "runway" for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. "We now have a second major home Games in prospect," said Australian Olympic Committee chief Matt Carroll. "Commonwealth Games in 2026 is a major marker on that runway." Victoria estimated the Games would contribute more than A$3 billion ($2.22 billion) to its economy and create thousands of jobs.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee congratulated Victoria. "Bringing the 2026 Commonwealth Games to Victoria is fantastic news for New Zealand," the NZOC said in a statement. "New Zealand athletes will have a home advantage with better travel, training and performance opportunities, and only a quick flight for friends, whanau (family) and fans to support the team on the ground."

English city Birmingham will host the 2022 Commonwealth Games from July 28-Aug. 8, having replaced South Africa, who were stripped of them in 2017 over a lack of progress in preparations.

CWG 2026: Australia's Victoria to spread showpiece event far and wide

Barcelona striker Luuk de Jong scored a header in added time to give his side a 3-2 win at struggling Levante after a remarkable, end-to-end game in which his side gave away three penalties. Barca are the first team in LaLiga to win a match after conceding three penalties and De Jong`s last-gasp goal saw them record a seventh consecutive league win, lifting them into second in the standings on 60 points after 30 games.

But they are still a long way behind leaders Real Madrid, who have 72 points from 31 after beating Getafe 2-0 at home on Saturday. Levante are 19th on 22 points. Levante took a surprise but deserved lead against a lacklustre Barca in the 52nd minute when captain Jose Luis Morales scored from the spot after a foul by Dani Alves.

Moments later the hosts earned a second penalty, for a handball by Eric Garcia, who had prevented Levante from taking the lead in the first half when he scrambled a shot from Morales off the line. This time striker Roger Marti stepped up to take it and his effort was saved by Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The visitors quickly made Levante pay, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang heading home a cross from Ousmane Dembele in the 59th minute.

Teenage midfielder Pedri then gave Barca the lead in the 63rd, thumping a first-time shot into the bottom corner after being teed up by 17-year-old Gavi, who had also been hauled on from the bench in the second half. Levante then won a third penalty of the second half when Dani Gomez latched on to a through ball and was tripped by Barca defender Clement Lenglet. Gonzalo Melero assumed taking duties and made no mistake against Ter Stegen to level in the 83rd.

But there was time for one final twist in an enthralling encounter when substitute De Jong connected with a Jordi Alba cross and headed into the bottom corner in the second minute of added time. "The fact we won while conceding three penalties shows we are very competitive and have a winning mentality," said Barca coach Xavi.

"I was concerned about this game because Levante are a difficult side with great players and they have beaten sides like Villarreal and Atletico Madrid. We`ve earned three golden points that keep us in the fight."
But when pressed on whether Barca had a chance of catching runaway leaders Real, the coach added: "It`s very difficult because Real Madrid seldom slip up. But if they drop a few points in the next two weeks we can start to believe a little more."
