T20 WC: 'It was meant to be,' Virat Kohli after India pull off a memorable victory over Pakistan

<p>The T20 World Cup is well and truly underway in Australia. India won the toss against Pakistan and decided to field first in an attempt to even the score after suffering a thrashing last year in Dubai.</p>

<p>Ace all-rounder Hardik Pandya has made it to the Australian shores and the playing XI after doubts surrounding&nbsp;his match fitness, in the lead up to the marquee tournament. When quizzed if his body was fit and that he will bowl in the match, Hardik said we needed to put the topic to rest&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The body is fine, I think we should put that topic about my body on rest, you will see me bowling," said Pandya in the interview.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jurgen Klopp said the mood around Liverpool had been lifted after Mohamed Salah came off the bench to score the fastest hat-trick in Champions League history in a 7-1 demolition of Rangers at Ibrox on Wednesday.</p>

<p>The Reds had won just four of their first 11 games of the season and fell behind for the eighth time this campaign when Scott Arfield fired the Glasgow giants into an early lead.</p>

Jurgen Klopp said the mood around Liverpool had been lifted after Mohamed Salah came off the bench to score the fastest hat-trick in Champions League history in a 7-1 demolition of Rangers at Ibrox on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp said the mood around Liverpool had been lifted after Mohamed Salah came off the bench to score the fastest hat-trick in Champions League history in a 7-1 demolition of Rangers at Ibrox on Wednesday. The Reds had won just four of their first 11 games of the season and fell behind for the eighth time this campaign when Scott Arfield fired the Glasgow giants into an early lead. But Rangers are being schooled on their return to the Champions League for the first time in 12 years as they crumbled to a record-equalling European defeat in the second half. The Glasgow giants remain without a point and have conceded 16 goals in four games. "The first half and the last half an hour was night and day," said Van Bronckhorst. "I cannot explain it. The performance was not the way we want to represent this club." Roberto Firmino's double either side of half-time turned the game around before the Brazilian teed up Darwin Nunez to kill off the contest. Klopp had left Salah, Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota on the bench with one eye on Sunday's clash against Manchester City in the Premier League. "When we play to our potential we're a pretty good football team. That's what we showed tonight." Harvey Elliott rounded off the scoring on a sobering night for a Rangers side that only months ago reached the Europa League final. Former World No. 1 and Liv Golf CEO Greg Norman has launched an all-out attack on the PGA tour for blocking the awarding of ranking points to his players. A combative Norman spoke to Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo on the sidelines of the Bangkok invitational and opened up on the circuit's future plans of following an 'IPL-Type' franchise model from 2023.

Exclusive: LIV CEO Greg Norman on the battle for golf

"I have lost shallow minded friends who have judged my game to take the game of golf and grow it. My heat shield is strong and protective. I knew I was going to face stick. I understood the model and not one person in this world I have spoken to me told me it is a stupid idea. The monopolists are trying to destroy us. We have never tried to destroy anyone. Our players should play other tours. Why cant other tours allow us to play here," said Greg Norman.

<p>World number one Iga Swiatek swept to a 6-2 7-6(5) victory over Tunisia's Ons Jabeur in the US Open final on Saturday to clinch her maiden trophy at Flushing Meadows and third Grand Slam crown.</p>

<p>Poland's Swiatek fell on her back and covered her face with her hands after prevailing in the tight second-set tiebreak, having sealed the win when fifth seed Jabeur's shot sailed long.</p>

<p>It was twice French Open champion Swiatek's first Grand Slam title on a hard court and the 21-year-old is the first Polish woman to win the US Open.</p>

<p>"I really needed to stay composed and focused on the goals, and at this tournament it was really challenging," Swiatek said during the on-court trophy ceremony.</p>

<p>"It's New York, it's so loud, it's so crazy. There were so many temptations in the city...I'm so proud I could handle it mentally,"</p>

<p>In addition to the trophy, Swiatek also leaves New York with a $2.6 million winner's check.</p>

<p>"I'm really glad that it's not in cash," she said to laughs from the sold-out crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.</p>

<p>Swiatek did well during the match to tune out the crowd, who at times whistled and made other noises while she was serving, earning stern rebukes from the chair umpire.</p>

<p>The demonstrative Jabeur was able to harness the energy of her fans at times but it was not enough to overcome the focused and determined Swiatek.</p>

<p>"Ons, such an amazing tournament, such an amazing season," Swiatek said after improving to 3-2 lifetime against Jabeur.</p>

<p>"I know that this is already a pretty nice rivalry and we're going to have many more. I'm pretty sure you're going to win some of them so don't worry,"</p>

<p>Despite the defeat, Wimbledon finalist Jabeur will regain her world number two ranking when the tournament concludes on Sunday.</p>

<p>"I really tried but Iga didn't make it easy for me," Jabeur said.</p>

<p>"She deserved to win today. I don't like her very much right now but it's okay," she added with a smile.</p>

<p>"I'm going to keep fighting hard and we'll get that title sometime soon."</p>

<p>Jabeur made history at Wimbledon when she became the first Arab woman to reach a Grand Slam final. She added another line in the history books in New York, becoming the first African woman to reach the US Open championship match.</p>

<p>"Hopefully I can inspire more and more generations, that's the goal," she said. "This is just the beginning of so many things."</p>

<p><strong>Tiebreak errors</strong></p>

<p>Swiatek came out firing on Saturday, pushing Jabeur to the back of the court with her precise serve and deep groundstrokes to race to a 3-0 lead.</p>

<p>Jabeur found the range with her forehand to win back-to-back games for 3-2 but the momentum was short-lived as Swiatek broke back and took the 30-minute first set when the Tunisian's backhand landed in the net.</p>

<p>A confident front-runner, Swiatek kept the pressure on early in the second as frustration began to mount for Jabeur, who dropped her racket in dismay when her normally trusty drop shot landed short of the net in the second game of the set.</p>

<p>Swiatek blasted a backhand winner down the line for a 3-0 second set lead and it seemed the match would be a brief affair.</p>

<p>But Jabeur rallied, saving a match point at 6-5 and forcing a tiebreak.</p>

<p>She made some costly unforced errors in the tiebreaker, however, which opened the door for Swiatek, who exchanged a warm embrace with the Tunisian after the match.</p>

<p><strong>One in 40 million</strong></p>

<p>Swiatek's title in New York is the latest triumph in a season overflowing with them.</p>

<p>She ascended to world number one following the surprising retirement of Australian Ash Barty in March and quickly showed she was worthy of the position, winning 37 consecutive matches, including the French Open.</p>

<p>The claycourt specialist showed she could be successful on hard courts, too, with wins at Indian Wells and Miami, but finally looked vulnerable after early exits at US Open tune-up events in Toronto and Cincinnati.</p>

<p>She made headlines coming into New York by criticizing the balls being used at the US Open and said her expectations for herself were low.</p>

<p>Swiatek's path to the title was not plain sailing.</p>

<p>She needed to battle back from a set down in her fourth-round match with 108th-ranked Jule Niemeier and from 4-2 down in the third set against Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-final.</p>

<p>But she peaked at the right time, playing her best tennis of the tournament to see off Jabeur and etch her name once again into Poland's sporting history.</p>

<p>"Being raised in Poland, it's not so sure for us that we will to be tennis superstars," she told ESPN while white-and-red clad Polish tennis fans chanted "Iga! Iga!".</p>

World number one Iga Swiatek swept to a 6-2 7-6(5) victory over Tunisia's Ons Jabeur in the US Open final on Saturday to clinch her maiden trophy at Flushing Meadows and third Grand Slam crown.

World number one Iga Swiatek swept to a 6-2 7-6(5) victory over Tunisia's Ons Jabeur in the US Open final on Saturday to clinch her maiden trophy at Flushing Meadows and third Grand Slam crown. Poland's Swiatek fell on her back and covered her face with her hands after prevailing in the tight second-set tiebreak, having sealed the win when fifth seed Jabeur's shot sailed long. It was twice French Open champion Swiatek's first Grand Slam title on a hard court and the 21-year-old is the first Polish woman to win the US Open. "I really needed to stay composed and focused on the goals, and at this tournament it was really challenging," Swiatek said during the on-court trophy ceremony. "It's New York, it's so loud, it's so crazy. There were so many temptations in the city...I'm so proud I could handle it mentally," In addition to the trophy, Swiatek also leaves New York with a $2.6 million winner's check. "I'm really glad that it's not in cash," she said to laughs from the sold-out crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Swiatek did well during the match to tune out the crowd, who at times whistled and made other noises while she was serving, earning stern rebukes from the chair umpire. The demonstrative Jabeur was able to harness the energy of her fans at times but it was not enough to overcome the focused and determined Swiatek. "Ons, such an amazing tournament, such an amazing season," Swiatek said after improving to 3-2 lifetime against Jabeur. "I know that this is already a pretty nice rivalry and we're going to have many more. I'm pretty sure you're going to win some of them so don't worry," Despite the defeat, Wimbledon finalist Jabeur will regain her world number two ranking when the tournament concludes on Sunday. "I really tried but Iga didn't make it easy for me," Jabeur said. "She deserved to win today. I don't like her very much right now but it's okay," she added with a smile. "I'm going to keep fighting hard and we'll get that title sometime soon." Jabeur made history at Wimbledon when she became the first Arab woman to reach a Grand Slam final. She added another line in the history books in New York, becoming the first African woman to reach the US Open championship match. "Hopefully I can inspire more and more generations, that's the goal," she said. "This is just the beginning of so many things." Tiebreak errors Swiatek came out firing on Saturday, pushing Jabeur to the back of the court with her precise serve and deep groundstrokes to race to a 3-0 lead. Jabeur found the range with her forehand to win back-to-back games for 3-2 but the momentum was short-lived as Swiatek broke back and took the 30-minute first set when the Tunisian's backhand landed in the net. A confident front-runner, Swiatek kept the pressure on early in the second as frustration began to mount for Jabeur, who dropped her racket in dismay when her normally trusty drop shot landed short of the net in the second game of the set. Swiatek blasted a backhand winner down the line for a 3-0 second set lead and it seemed the match would be a brief affair. But Jabeur rallied, saving a match point at 6-5 and forcing a tiebreak. She made some costly unforced errors in the tiebreaker, however, which opened the door for Swiatek, who exchanged a warm embrace with the Tunisian after the match. One in 40 million Swiatek's title in New York is the latest triumph in a season overflowing with them. She ascended to world number one following the surprising retirement of Australian Ash Barty in March and quickly showed she was worthy of the position, winning 37 consecutive matches, including the French Open. The claycourt specialist showed she could be successful on hard courts, too, with wins at Indian Wells and Miami, but finally looked vulnerable after early exits at US Open tune-up events in Toronto and Cincinnati. She made headlines coming into New York by criticizing the balls being used at the US Open and said her expectations for herself were low. Swiatek's path to the title was not plain sailing. She needed to battle back from a set down in her fourth-round match with 108th-ranked Jule Niemeier and from 4-2 down in the third set against Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-final. But she peaked at the right time, playing her best tennis of the tournament to see off Jabeur and etch her name once again into Poland's sporting history. "Being raised in Poland, it's not so sure for us that we will to be tennis superstars," she told ESPN while white-and-red clad Polish tennis fans chanted "Iga! Iga!". "When I was younger I just logically thought that I'm just one of 40 million people in the country. What's the possibility that I will be the one to be out there? I just worked hard day by day." she signed off saying. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

<p>Rugby league has banned transgender players from women`s international competition until further notice, following global swimming`s decision to restrict trans athletes` participation at the elite level. The International Rugby League (IRL) said in a statement on Tuesday that it needed to further consult before finalising its transgender policy. "Until further research is completed to enable the IRL to implement a formal transgender inclusion policy, male-to-female (trans women) players are unable to play in sanctioned women`s international rugby league matches," it said.</p>

<p>"It is the IRL`s responsibility to balance the individual`s right to participate ... against perceived risk to other participants, and to ensure all are given a fair hearing." The ban, which comes after FINA voted on Sunday to restrict transgender athletes in elite women`s swimming, drew scathing criticism from transgender advocates.</p>

<p>"Blanket bans on women who are trans playing against other women risks violating international human rights principles of non-discrimination, which require such policies to start from a place of inclusion," Anna Brown, CEO of Equality Australia, said in a statement.</p>

<p>"FINA failed to meet that standard, and the Rugby League’s ban also fails to do so, despite it being temporary." Other sports have existing policies that restrict transgender athletes in top women`s competition, including international rugby union, cycling and Australian Rules football.</p>

<p>The International Olympic Committee, however, said in November that no athlete should be excluded from competition on the grounds of a perceived unfair advantage, while leaving it up to sports federations to decide. The International Cycling Union said last week it had tightened its eligibility rules while other sports have said they are reviewing their policies. World soccer governing body FIFA said it is in a consultation process over transgender participation while World Athletics boss Sebastian Coe praised FINA for its stance.</p>

<p><strong>`CRUEL DECISION`</strong><br />
A top medical official at FINA told Reuters on Monday he hoped other sports would follow the organisation`s lead. "To my mind, FINA’s approach to this was very enlightened, it was very balanced, it was informed," FINA`s Sports Medicine Committee vice chairman David Gerrard said.</p>

<p>However, U.S. soccer player Megan Rapinoe, a two-time World Cup winner and an Olympic gold medallist, said the FINA decision was "disgusting" and "cruel". "We`re (framing) everything through `God forbid a trans person be successful in sports`. Get a grip on reality and take a step back," she told Time magazine.<br />
The IRL said it would work with the eight nations competing at the women`s Rugby League World Cup hosted by England in November to obtain data to inform a transgender policy in 2023.</p>

<p>"The IRL will continue to work towards developing a set of criteria, based on best possible evidence, which fairly balance the individual`s right to play with the safety of all participants," the organisation added.<br />
The ban is unlikely to affect many international players in women`s rugby league. There are no transgender players competing at international level in the sport`s heavyweight nations Australia and New Zealand.</p>

<p>The governing body of Australia`s domestic National Rugby League (NRL) competition declined to comment on the international ban and said it was still formulating its own transgender policy. "The policy will be determined by the (NRL) Commission after all advice is carefully and sensibly considered," an NRL spokesperson said.</p>
