England manager Gareth Southgate was full of praise for teenage sensation Jude Bellingham after he lit up the World Cup stage with an electrifying performance against Senegal. Southgate said Bellingham's maturity could not have been predicted by many. "I don't think we could have predicted how quickly Bellingham could mature. In the last five months that has gone to another level," said Southgate in the post-match presser. Bellingham was instrumental in England netting their first goal of the match. After a tentative start to the game, Senegal started creating a few overloads in the England penalty box and asking questions of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Just when it looked like the African champions would push on the throttle, England through a counterattack, orchestrated by Phil Foden, Harry Kane, Bellingham and Jordan Henderson managed to get their noses ahead. However, the 19-year-old using his physicality and pace managed to beat a few Senegalese defenders and dropped a pinpoint cross in front of Henderson who busted a gut to get into the box and calmly slot the ball to the back of the net. Similarly, for the second goal, it was Bellingham that won the ball high up in the English half and managed to progress it deep into the Senegalese territory and set up Kane for his first goal of the tournament. The English skipper heaped praise on Bellingham and said the teenager had everything going for him. "I think he's a fantastic player. He has everything with and without the ball. He presses really well, gets around the pitch, tackles," said Kane. "With the ball he can run, take players on, play a through ball, and as you saw today he was really important with our goal. I like Jude a lot. He's a really good person. He's mature for his age, got great leadership skills." In an attempt to focus its time and resources on developing football at the grassroots level, the All India Football Federation Monday announced had decided to withdraw India's bid to host the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.

“Our current focus is building the foundations of proper footballing structure before thinking of hosting bigger events like the AFC Asian Cup,” read the notification posted on AIFF's website.

Kalyan Chaubey, the newly crowned president of AIFF said India has shown the capability to host global events but "hosting of big events doesn't fit into the Federation's strategic priorities".

“India has always been a wonderful and efficient host to big tournaments, which was amply demonstrated in the recently concluded FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. However, the EC has decided that the overall strategy of the Federation currently remains on focusing on the fundamental goals to strengthen our football at every level from grassroots to youth development," said Chaubey.

"At the same time, we must also strengthen our stakeholders, especially the State Associations and work closely with the clubs to bring about a change in every aspect of football at the domestic level. All such aspects will truly be implemented when the Roadmap is announced later this month.”

Germany's shock exit from the group stage of the World Cup for the second time in as many tournaments came as a shock to many. Now, reports are emerging that there is rift within the German camp as the political messaging by the group did not go down well with certain players in the dressing room.

According to media reports, some players in the German camp did not want to take part in the mouth-covering act to protest against FIFA's decision of banning the 'One Love' armbands.

TV host Esther Sedlaczek was the first to report the rumours of the dressing room rift when she interviewed German football director Oliver Bierhoff.

"Would you say that the One-Love armband could have been handled better? The fact is, according to our sources, not every player was OK with the gesture before the Japan game and that they worried that it would cause issues in the team," she asked Bierhoff.

According to local media reports, Bierhoff was first annoyed at the question and said, “You can certainly discuss that at some point. But after three games that have taken place on the pitch, do you think that One Love armband has played such a big role?”

He later admitted that the armband controversy could have been handled better.

“We could have done it better without a doubt. Whether that is decisive for the elimination is another matter.”

With questions rising over Rohit Sharma's captaincy, former Indian cricketer Maninder Singh has opined that Shreyas Iyer may be the right candidate to take over from Sharma in the white-ball format.

With questions rising over Rohit Sharma's captaincy, former Indian cricketer Maninder Singh has opined that Shreyas Iyer may be the right candidate to take over from Sharma in the white-ball format. "I've been saying this for the past three-four years, you know Shreyas Iyer is my favourite," said Singh in an interview with Hindustan Times. Maninder added that Hardik Pandya can be the stop-gap captain but it should be Iyer that should take the reins in the future. "For me, I still feel, I've said it earlier Hardik Pandya at the moment - you can make him the captain in white-ball cricket. But in my mind, its Shreyas Iyer, actually (a candidate) for the past 3-4 years. I really hope that we give him opportunities to play for India regularly in all the formats because he has a good brain." Read more: BAN vs IND 2022: ‘Was asked to keep wickets, no idea why Rishabh Pant was released’ – KL Rahul "Whenever I have seen him lead any side, when he led the IPL side or anywhere, he looks like a good thinker of the game. He's got a good head on his shoulders, and he is somebody who is very positive," he added. Iyer has become the lynchpin in the middle order for the Indian side in the 50-overs format. He has been the most consistent of the lot since making his debut in 2017. Having played 37 ODIs, Iyer has scored 1452 runs with an average of 48.4 and a healthy strike rate of 97.25. As for the T20 format, Iyer is yet to lock in a spot due to selection conundrum and his indifferent form. Singh, however, praised Iyer for his temperament and said he had the quality to score quick runs. "You can see his approach when he bats, whenever he comes to bat he is looking for runs....if he doesn't get boundaries from the word go, you can see him rotating his strike, he is looking for singles, trying to find the gaps and that’s his quality." Ever since India's tame exit from the T20 World Cup in Australia, speculations have been growing over the appointment of the next T20I team captain. Hardik Pandya has been leading the race as the new selection committee seeks to phase out the older players and experiment with the youth. The Indian team has been devoid of any ICC silverware for the last nine years. A change in captaincy and team selection strategy appears to be the obvious short-term fix. Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli pulled off a moment of brilliance in the field in the first ODI against Bangladesh after having fallen prey to a similar stunning effort in the first innings. Chasing 187, Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahman were developing a partnership in the middle after losing three wickets in under 100 runs. Summoned by captain Rohit Sharma to bowl the 24th over, orthodox, right-arm off-spinner Washington Sundar bowled two dots on the trot. On the third delivery, the lanky all-rounder flighted the ball on the sixth stump as Shakib, taking the bait, went fetching for it. However, the left-hander was deceived by the flight and managed to slice the ball straight up in the air to the right of the extra cover fielder. Kohli stationed in the region quickly lept to his right rather acrobatically and managed to grab a one-hand stunner. We’re not a golden generation, we’re a generation with lots of talent and great players from across Europe," Courtois was quoted as saying by Diairo AS. “We showed in Russia, we are a Belgium that plays good football. In this World Cup and Euro 2020 we were not ourselves, it’s embarrassing," added the Real Madrid keeper. What does a batter like Joe Root do when playing on an absolute flat deck where the ball has not shown signs of any movement or spin in eons and the team is miles ahead in the game?

What does a batter like Joe Root do when playing on an absolute flat deck where the ball has not shown signs of any movement or spin in eons and the team is miles ahead in the game? They bat left-handed to try to give themselves some sort of a challenge. The former England captain took everyone by surprise on the fourth day of the ongoing Rawalpindi Test when he became a left-handed batter. In the 23rd over of England's second innings, Joe Root facing leg spinner Zahid Mahmood took guard as a proper left-hander and swept a delivery on the pads to the left of short square leg. While it was a catching opportunity, the diving fielder in Naseem Shah failed to pouch it as the batters trudged across to complete the single. Coming to the shot, Root looked in perfect shape for a batter who is conventionally a right-hander. Most batters tend to remain in their natural stance before the ball is bowled before switching sides. The likes of Kevin Pietersen and David Warner have been masters of the switch hit over the years. However, Root did nothing of that sort as he became a left-hander for the particular delivery. This time, the ball took the leading edge and ballooned straight into the hands of Imam Ul Haq at short fine leg who completed the regulation take. Root and his ingenious ideas Root has been at the centre of intriguing events during the Test match. India's brightest badminton prospect and 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medalist Lakshay Sen has found himself in a controversy after an FIR was filed against him for age fraud and cheating in Bengaluru. According to reports, Sen, his father Dhirendra Kumar, brother Chirag, and mother Nirmala alongside coach U Vimal Kumar have been named in the FIR filed by an individual named M Goviappa Nagaraja. Nagaraja alleged that the 21-year-old and his brother fudged their age since 2010 to play in age-group tournaments. The complainant in the FIR added that the brothers colluded with the parents and the coach to forge the birth documents. Nagaraja said Sen's age is 24 which is starkly different from the August 16, 2001 date mentioned in the shuttler's document registered with the Badminton Association of India. Memphis Depay and Daley Blind scored in the first half and Denzel Dumfries added a late goal as the Netherlands eliminated the United States from the World Cup with a 3-1 victory Saturday that advanced the Dutch to the quarterfinals.

Second-half substitute Haji Wright cut the US deficit to 2-1 in the 76th minute when Christian Pulisic’s cross hit his trailing foot and popped over goalkeeper Andries Noppert and into the net. But Dumfries, who assisted on the first two goals, scored on a volley in the 81st.

Runners-up in 1974, 1978 and 2010, the Oranje extended their unbeaten streak to 19 games and face Argentina or Australia on Friday.

It was a disappointing end for a rebuilt US team hoping to advance past the round of 16 for the first time since 2002. Using the second-youngest squad in the tournament, the Americans achieved the bare minimum to consider the World Cup a success, beating Iran in their group-stage finale to reach the knockout round.

But just like in 2010 against Ghana and 2014 against Belgium, the United States was eliminated in the round of 16. The Americans are winless in 12 games against European opponents at the World Cup since 2002, losing six, and are 1-7 during the tournament’s knockout rounds.

Pulisic, playing four days after getting hurt during his game-winning goal against Iran, had a chance to put the United States ahead in the third minute but Noppert, playing in only his fourth international match, blocked his point-blank shot. With the Americans seeking an equalizing goal, Noppert dived to stop Tim Weah’s 25-yard effort in the 42nd.

The crowd of 44,846 was well back from the field at renovated Khalifa International Stadium, which has an athletics track and was more subdued than the raucous spectators for the match against Iran.

While the United States had the better play at the start, the Dutch went ahead after breaking the American press. Dumfries one-timed a pass from the right flank as Depay streaked unmarked into the penalty area.

His right-footed shot from 14 yards beat Matt Turner to the far post in the 10th minute for his 43rd international goal, moving him into sole possession of second place on the Dutch career scoring list behind Robin van Persie’s 50.

The goal was the first allowed by the United States from the run of play in the tournament. In 37 World Cup matches, the Americans have never won a game in which they trailed.

The Netherlands doubled the lead on virtually the final kick of the first half, in the first minute of stoppage time. After a quick series of exchanges following a throw-in, Dumfries got a cross around Tyler Adams and found Blind wide open at the penalty spot.

Blind scored only his third international goal, his first in eight years. Gio Reyna fed an open Weston McKennie in the 54th, but he skied his shot over the crossbar.

Wright entered in the 67th and scored his second international goal, sparking US hopes. But Dumfries was left unmarked by Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson and used his left foot to volley Blind’s cross.

Young and restless

In an interview with AS, Pochettino was asked about his sacking as the PSG manager, 17 months into the job and despite winning the league with the Parisians. Pochettino hit out at the critics who considered his achievement as 'underwhelming', suggesting if that was the case then managers like Guardiola would have met the same fate. "If [I left] PSG for not winning the Champions League, Guardiola should have already been sacked seven or eight times!" said Pochettino. "They are different realities. Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani was an enraged man after his side crashed out of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Friday. Cavani while trudging back to the tunnel after the full-time whistle smashed the pitch-side VAR (Virtual Assistant Referees) monitor. Cavani may have been miffed after Uruguay were denied a penalty in the 57th minute when Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez was tripped in the Ghanian box. German referee Daniel Siebert did not award the penalty and even after being asked to go to the VAR monitor, he stayed firm on his original decision. Usually, decisions are overturned as soon as a referee heads to the VAR monitor. Similarly, deep into the stoppage time, Cavani was brought down in the penalty box by a Ghanian defender. While Cavani and his teammates appealed vociferously for the penalty, the referee asked the Uruguayan to get up on his feet and continue. South Korean talisman Son Heung-min on Friday described the wait for the confirmation of his team's place in the knockout rounds as 'the longest six minutes' of his life.

South Korean talisman Son Heung-min on Friday described the wait for the confirmation of his team's place in the knockout rounds as 'the longest six minutes' of his life. "It was the longest six minutes of my life, but in the circle we were really positive," said Son after his side advanced to the last 16. South Korea completed their side of the deal by beating Portugal, late into the stoppage time, courtesy of a moment of brilliance from Son who assisted Hwang Hee-chan for the goal. However, the Taeguk Warriors had to sit back and hope that Uruguay do not score a third goal against Ghana. The South Korean captain added that if even Uruguay had scored a goal, he would have been proud of his team. "I said: if Uruguay score one more goal, I'm very proud of this team and very happy that you gave it everything and we will see what's going to happen. We were just waiting, but it was a long wait," said Son. There are several intriguing plotlines currently unfolding in the FIFA World Cup. However, none is as tense as the USA-Iran match, scheduled to take place later tonight. The countries severed diplomatic ties nearly 40 years ago, yet the fight on the pitch threatens to spill outside.

In the current situation, Qatar finds itself in a quandary. Doha has strong ties with Washington and remains on friendly terms with Tehran as well. It has promised to beef up security to the extent that nothing untoward happens before, during or after the match.

However, the fans are worried about the match and how the situation might quickly turn pear-shaped despite the best arrangements.

“I will not attend the game on Tuesday since I do not feel safe in Qatar. Qatar is conducting the same censorship system as what is going on in Iran. Also, FIFA is to take the blame,” an Iranian-Canadian citizen was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Adding fuel to fire, the US Soccer Federation (USSF) on Sunday posted a modified Iranian flag in one of its social media posts, triggering a response from the Iranian side which complained to FIFA.

The now-deleted post showed the Group B table in which USA and Iran have been drawn together. The post carried the correct flags of all countries in the group, barring Iran whose flag's green, white and red colours were present without the emblem of the Islamic Republic.

If the chatter coming from the UK media is to be believed, Premier League giants Liverpool FC and its ownership have held talks with two consortiums based in West Asia.

If the chatter coming from the UK media is to be believed, Premier League giants Liverpool FC and its ownership have held talks with two consortiums based in West Asia. Both consortiums are believed to have a close working relationship with the respective Saudi and Qatari royal families. Fenway Sports Group (FSG) is the current owner of the Merseyside club and they have valued the club at around $4 billion. Banking giants Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have been roped in to handle the club's takeover process in case their demands are met. According to the reports, FSG director Mike Gordon has been approached by the consortiums regarding the sale. Kingdom gives the green light Saudi Arabia’s sports minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal has already given the green light from the government, saying the kingdom will support the bids for the takeover. “If there’s an investor willing to do so and the numbers add up, why not? We will definitely support it if any [Saudi] private sector comes in because we know that’s going to reflect positively on sports within the kingdom," said Turki Al Faisal “From the private sector, I can’t speak on their behalf, but there is a lot of interest and appetite and there’s a lot of passion about football," he added. FSG put the club for sale Earlier this month, FSG put the club up for sale, 12 years after completing the takeover from Tom Hicks and George Gillett. "FSG has frequently received expressions of interest from third parties seeking to become shareholders in Liverpool. FSG has said before that under the right terms and conditions we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club," read a statement released by FSG at the time. Read more: Premier League club Liverpool put up for sale by Fenway Sports Group After the news of the takeover gained pace, several big names started doing the rounds. However, it was the supposed interest of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani that gained the maximum traction. Liverpool fans for long have been demanding that FSG sell the club as their 'buy-to-sell' policy has proved to be a bottleneck in Klopp's plans of refreshing the squad. According to state news agency IRNA, the word “Allah” was removed from the Islamic Republic’s flag. “In an unprofessional act, the Instagram page of the US football federation removed the Allah symbol from the Iranian flag," said the Iranian football federation. The now-deleted post showed the Group B table in which USA and Iran have been drawn together. The post carried the correct flags of all countries in the group, barring Iran whose flag's green, white and red colours were present without the emblem of the Islamic Republic. When quizzed if it was done on purpose, US soccer media officer Michael Kammarman said it was done to show "support for the women in Iran fighting for basic human rights". "We didn't know anything about the posts but we are supporters of women's rights, we always have been," said US defender Walker Zimmerman, before adding, "We're focused a lot on Tuesday and the sporting side as well but at the same time we're firm believers in women's rights and support them." The death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini in September at the hands of Iran's morality police has triggered a nationwide protest. Women, students, children and even men are demanding more freedom from the Iranian authorities. However, after arrest threats were issued, the team sang the national anthem in the second match. US and Iran are all set to lock horns on Tuesday in what is being billed as a big-ticket encounter due to the cold relations between the two countries. The controversy surrounding the flag is only expected to add to the fire. After a resounding start to the World Cup campaign, England were dealt a sharp reality check on Friday when they were stopped in the tracks by a resolute US Men's National Soccer Team (USMNT). The fans quickly showed their disapproval at the Al Bayt Stadium by hearing the Three Lions for failing to return with three points in the bag. England coach Gareth Southgate was questioned after the end of the match about what he thought of the booing by the fans. Southgate termed the jeering as 'external noise' and said his team will not be impacted by it. “People are going to react how they are going to react. I cannot let that affect how I feel about the team or how the team feels. I’m sure there will be a lot of noise. This is the tournament of external noise. We are on track with a bit to do,” said Southgate. “Of course I want our fans to go home happy and I want our fans at home to have a smile on their faces. We have not quite managed to achieve that. I am sure there will be a lot of noise about the performance but not a lot of teams go through with nine points." On Monday, the Hong Kong government in a strongly worded statement criticised and demanded an investigation after a popular democracy protest song was played instead of the Chinese national anthem at a rugby seven seas tournament game that the city was a part of in South Korea.

In a statement, the city’s government said that it “strongly deplores and opposes the playing of a song closely associated with violent protests and the 'independence' movement”, in place of China's national anthem. It added, “The National Anthem is a symbol of our country. The organiser of the tournament has a duty to ensure that the National Anthem receives the respect it warranted.”

The song “Glory to Hong Kong” is considered an unofficial anthem of the 2019 pro-democracy movement in the city which is now becoming increasingly controversial amid China’s crackdown on the democracy movement.

While authorities did not name the song, the widely circulated footage of Sunday’s match shows that it was played before the Asia Rugby Sevens Series finals between Hong Kong and South Korea in Incheon. A government spokesperson also wrote to the Hong Kong Rugby Union demanding them “to deal with this matter seriously, launch a full and in-depth investigation and submit a detailed report, and convey our strong objection”, to the organisers.

However, the city’s authorities said that Asia Rugby has already apologised to the union for the incident and confirmed that the recording of China’s national anthem submitted by the Hong Kong team’s coach was the correct one and that the incident occurred was a mistake “caused by human error of a junior staff”.

Just when the Netherlands looked on the path to getting to a good score, Aiden Markram dismissed Myburgh in the ninth over to give his team the first breakthrough.
