After much hullabaloo, formals bid were submitted for the takeover of Manchester United. Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, the chairman of one of Qatar’s biggest banks as well as British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe on Friday confirmed that they had filed their bids for the ownership of the club. The former released a statement, suggesting that a 100 per cent takeover of the English clubs was on the cards. "Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani today confirmed his submission of a bid for 100 per cent of Manchester United Football Club," read the statement. Al Thani added that putting in the bid was an attempt to steer the club to its 'former glories' both on and off the pitch. Explaining how he will be changing the footballing landscape of one of the biggest clubs in the world, the statement read: "The bid will be completely debt free via Sheikh Jassim's Nine Two Foundation, which will look to invest in the football teams, the training centre, the stadium and wider infrastructure, the fan experience and the communities the Club supports." His father Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabar Al Thani served as Qatar's prime minister between 2007-2013. He is a known figure in footballing circles due to Qatar's ownership of Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain. WATCH | Qatari group preparing Manchester United takeover × As for Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the billionaire on previous occasions has confirmed that he has been in talks with the United board regarding a succession plan. Alongside Al Thani, he submitted a formal bid just before the 10 PM deadline on Friday. Currently, the Glazers family owns Manchester United since 2005 but the fans have been adamant to force them out, primarily for not doing enough for the club. Succumbing to the pressure, the American group in November last year shared their interest in seeking outside investment in the club. The Glazers peg the club at $7.2 billion but the industry experts, as per ESPN, believe that the realistic price tag is around $5.4 billion. Notably, United is not the only club in the 'Big-six' that might be sold in the upcoming months. Rumours have been swirling around the potential sale of United's arch-rival Liverpool to Qatar-based businesses too. Similarly, Tottenham Hotspurs could be in for a takeover attempt from another gulf country. Currently, Manchester City and Newcastle United are the two clubs in Premier League handled by entities from the region. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Former Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram has slammed Ramiz Raja who was recently sacked from his position as the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Akram referred to Raja as being a 'kid' who came to operate cricket but was forced back to his original place.

"He came for six days, now he is back to his original place. Najam Sethi has experience. I think it is a wrong concept, that cricketers should be the chairman of PCB. It is an administrative job, so you need to have proper communication with all the boards. Najam Sethi is the right man for the job. I don’t care if people get angry," Akram told Cricket Pakistan.

The speedster recalled the instance when Raja, rather petulantly, issued threats to the BCCI for not agreeing to send the Indian team to Pakistan for the Asia Cup.

"Najam Sethi gave a very sensible answer. It all depends on approval from both governments. You have to talk properly with boards. This is not gully cricket, that if you don’t come, we also will not go to your country. I don’t understand who are these kids, who come and run cricket in Pakistan."

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was not a happy man after his side conceded in the 90th minute to go down against table-toppers Arsenal. The Dutch criticised his players and said they lacked the discipline required to secure all three points.

"Maybe in the next couple of hours we realise we are in a good position, realise we are in a good development, a good process, but at this moment I am annoyed," said Ten Hag in a post-match interview.

"I also told the players if you want to win trophies, titles, we have to change our mentality."

The former Ajax manager added that if his team continued to concede like that they would not be able to win trophies.

"Because it's not possible you are in a top game, you're making three such big mistakes where you concede goals. Especially the last goal, you have to feel the game on that point. A point was the maximum and then you have to take the point and you can't give such a goal away like we did on top level. Then you can't win trophies."

'Change your mentality': Erik ten Hag blasts Manchester United players after Arsenal defeat

Sebastian Korda stunned two-time losing finalist Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open on Friday, adding the Russian to a growing list of top seeds crashing out early.

The 31st-ranked American, son of 1998 Australian Open champion Petr Korda, blasted past the seventh seed 7-6 (9/7), 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) on Rod Laver Arena to race into the last 16.

Korda's upset teed up a clash with Polish 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz who battled past Canada's Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (7/3), 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 6-3 - for a place in the quarter-finals.

"An unbelievable match, I sort of knew what I had to do and I stuck with it even when I was going up and down with the emotions," said the 22-year-old Korda, adding that his game plan was "just go for it".

Medvedev was a losing finalist at the last two Australian Opens, to Novak Djokovic in 2021 and then in a demoralising five-set defeat 12 months ago against Rafael Nadal after leading by two sets.

He was attempting to become only the fourth man in the Open era to reach three consecutive Melbourne Park finals after Djokovic, Mats Wilander, and Ivan Lendl.

But that quest is now over as he joined defending champion Nadal, second seed Casper Ruud and eighth seed Taylor Fritz as high-profile first-week casualties at the season-opening Grand Slam.

Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan has opened up for the first time after not being selected for the first two Test matches of the upcoming Border Gavaskar trophy. The right-hand dasher said he wasn't able to sleep after receiving the news of his snub.

Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan has opened up for the first time after not being selected for the first two Test matches of the upcoming Border Gavaskar trophy. The right-hand dasher said he wasn't able to sleep after receiving the news of his snub. "I came from Assam to Delhi the day after the selection and wasn’t able to sleep the whole night. I kept asking why am I not there," said Khan in an interview with The Indian Express. "But now after speaking to my father, I’m back to normal. I will never give up practice, I will not go under depression. Don’t worry, I will keep trying.” The in-form batter had all the reasons to be dejected. Having scored a truckload of runs in the domestic circuit for the last couple of years, many had anticipated that Khan's selection in the Test team was only a matter of time. “I was down completely. It’s natural for anyone, especially once you have scored so many runs. I’m also human, not a machine. I too have emotions. I spoke to my father and he came to Delhi. I just had a practice session in Delhi with him." “Everywhere I go, I hear murmurs that he will play for India soon. On social media, I have thousands of messages talking about my exclusion. Sab bolte hain tera time aayega (everyone says your time will come)." Read more: India announce squad for Border-Gavaskar trophy; SKY makes the cut Since 2019, Khan, playing for Mumbai has scored 2,289 runs in 22 innings with a staggering average of 134.64 with nine hundreds, five fifties, two double hundreds, and a triple century. Khan's career average of 80.47 is only second to the great Donald Bradman who retired with an average of 99.9. The Mumbai batter revealed that he met chief selector Chetan Sharma who had assured him that his time will come. "Recently, I met Chetan Sharma sir (chief selector) while we were checking in at the hotel in Mumbai. He asked me not to feel disheartened, and that my time will come. Good things take time to happen. You're very close (to an India berth). You'll get your chance. So, when I played another important knock, I had expectations. But it's alright." The All-India Senior Selection Committee last Friday announced a 17-member squad for the first two Test matches. Instead of Sarfaraz, his state mate Suryakumar Yadav was picked, based on his pristine touch in the limited overs format, particularly T20Is. Eddie Nketiah scored twice as Arsenal set up an FA Cup fourth-round clash away to Manchester City after seeing off third-tier Oxford United 3-0 on Monday.

Liverpool suffered their fifth defeat of the season as Brentford inflicted a 3-1 drubbing over the Merseyside Reds on Monday. A goal apiece from Yoane Wissa, Bryan Mbeumo and an own goal from Ibrahima Konate were enough for the Bees to start the year off on a sparkling note.

Liverpool had themselves to blame for the loss as defensive errors and tactical lapses allowed Brentford to cash in. Akin to the last year's 3-3 draw between the two sides at the same stadium, Brentford bullied Liverpool on the set pieces, especially the corners. Heavily overloading the six-yard box, Brentford drew first blood when Ibrahima Konate's own goal past a diving Alisson granted the hosts a well-deserved lead. The lead was doubled through Yoane Wissa in the 42nd minute who could have easily bagged a hattrick if it wasn't for the two marginal offside calls. Wissa scoring three goals in a single half was a prime example of the defensive fragility in the Liverpool backline. With the team looking ill-disciplined, Klopp made three changes at half-time, bringing Andy Robertson, Joel Matip and Naby Keita in place of Kostas Tsimikas, Harvey Elliot and Virgil van Dijk. The move worked almost instantly as Darwin Nunez made a great run and slotted one past David Raya. However, VAR ruled out the goal as Nunez had strayed offside. The Reds kept on the pressure and through a cushioned header from Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, managed to reduce the deficit by one. Despite conceding the goal early in the half, Brentford did not panic and managed to keep wave after wave of Liverpool attacks at bay. In the end, Brentford forward Mbeumo managed to outmuscle Liverpool centre-back Konate and scored a third for his side in the 84th minute, effectively sealing the game. Liverpool changes Liverpool went into the match making two changes from their victory against Leicester City in the midlands last week. Captain Jordan Henderson missed out due to a concussion and was replaced by Fabinho while Ibrahima Konate came in place of Joel Matip. Read more: Liverpool in talks with Saudi and Qatari consortiums after Mukesh Ambani takeover rumour: Reports The Frenchman had a fabulous World Cup where he impressed fans and critics alike with his tenacious performance. However, on Monday, Konate was directly responsible for two of three goals. Liverpool looked sluggish as Klopp's gegenpress remained non-existent, as has been the case all throughout the season. Brentford utilised the physicality of its midfield and hurled direct long balls to create chaos in the Liverpool penalty box. Klopp's team have already dropped 23 points in the season so far. They are four points adrift of the top 4 spot and 15 points behind leaders Arsenal. Last year, Liverpool managed to turn around their fortunes after going on a 10-match unbeaten streak which pushed Manchester City to the final day of the league to decide the champions. However, with a depleted midfield and an injury-prone forward line, it looks highly unlikely that Liverpool will be mounting a similar comeback unless statement signings are made in the ongoing winter transfer window. As for Brentford fans, the fans in West London are having a fairy tale season. Having already beaten the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United, the victory on Monday has propelled them to the seventh spot on the table, just behind Liverpool. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Ending a century drought, Australian opener David Warner scored a double ton on Day 2 of the 2nd Test against South Africa at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Ending a century drought, Australian opener David Warner scored a double ton on Day 2 of the 2nd Test against South Africa at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). In process, he joined English batter Joe Root as only the second batter to have achieved this rare feat. Prior to the double hundred, Warner became the 10th batter in Test history, and second in Australian history to have hit a hundred in their milestone 100th Test match. During his marathon innings, Warner also entered the 8000-run Test club. His 25th ton took him behind Graeme Smith (27), Matthew Hayden (30), Alastair Cook (31), and Sunil Gavaskar (33). Overall, his 45 centuries place him behind Virat Kohli (72) in the list of most centuries by active cricketers. His last Test century came almost three years ago when playing against New Zealand in Sydney. He had been averaging a paltry 20.61 this year and the South African pace battery found it extremely easy to get past his defences in the first Test match. The pressure also piled on after off-field controversies forced Warner to take a stern stance in public to protect his family. A double century for David Warner! Though his inning had put the hosts firmly in the driving seat. Bowling first on the Boxing day, Australia managed to skittle out a brittle South African batting lineup on the modest score of 189. Newly minted millionaire Cameroon Green was the pick of the bowlers as he grabbed a five-fer to peg the Proteas back. At the end of Day's play, Australia had edged ahead in the game with the lead touching 200 and seven wickets in the bag. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has given his two cents on Cristiano Ronaldo and the snub that the Portuguese received during the FIFA World Cup. Erdogan said Ronaldo was subjected to a political ban during the tournament because he supported the Palestinian cause.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has given his two cents on Cristiano Ronaldo and the snub that the Portuguese received during the FIFA World Cup. Erdogan said Ronaldo was subjected to a political ban during the tournament because he supported the Palestinian cause. “They have wasted Ronaldo. Unfortunately, they have imposed a political ban on him,” Erdogan was quoted as saying by Al-Jazeera. “Sending a footballer like Ronaldo to the pitch with just 30 minutes remaining to the match ruined his psychology and took away his energy," said the Turkish leader before adding, Ronaldo is someone who stands for the Palestinian cause." While Erdogan claimed that Ronaldo supported Palestine, there is no real public evidence that points to the same. In pics | Cristiano Ronaldo's journey at the 2022 FIFA World Cup Several doctored images and false reports routinely do the rounds of social media, suggesting the same. However, nearly every such post has been fact-checked and proven to be false. A picture of Ronaldo holding a sign that reads “Together with the Palestinians" in Spanish went viral recently. However, it was found to be morphed as the original photo showed Ronaldo showing solidarity with the survivors of the Lorca earthquake. After Portugal crashed out of the World Cup, Ronaldo broke down in tears and cried inconsolably. In a video that went viral on social media platforms, an emotional Ronaldo could be seen walking off the pitch after the final whistle. WATCH | Is Cristiano Ronaldo moving to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr? × After starting the initial games, Ronaldo was snubbed from a place in the placing XI by then-manager Fernando Santos. While the ploy worked elegantly against Switzerland in the pre-quarterfinal, Portugal missed Ronaldo's class in the quarterfinal where they lost to Morocco. Santos at the time said he had no regrets for benching Ronaldo: “No, I don’t think so, no regrets. Cristiano is a great player, he came in when we thought it was necessary, so no regrets." The 2022 World Cup was potentially Ronaldo's last dance on the world stage. Currently a free agent, the former Manchester United striker has been linked to a move to Saudi Arabia. Australian allrounder Glenn Maxwell has revealed that he wasn't far off from his losing his leg after the freak accident ruled him out of the summer of cricket. “I probably wasn’t that far off losing my foot which was pretty scary.

Australian allrounder Glenn Maxwell has revealed that he wasn't far off from his losing his leg after the freak accident ruled him out of the summer of cricket. “I probably wasn’t that far off losing my foot which was pretty scary. To be able to be out the other side (now) and starting to walk again, it’s weird you sort of have to teach yourself how to walk. Maxwell sustained the injury at his friend's birthday party in a rather innocuous accident. The dasher was pretending to chase a friend when slipped on synthetic grass and fell. However, it was Maxwell's friend falling across his leg that caused the accident. The weight load on the leg was sufficient to snap it and the cricketer was left in squirming pain. However, to not aggravate the injury, Maxwell and his friends decided not to move him. After the snap and till reaching the doctor's, Maxwell had to endure a harrowing 50-minute period. "I shattered my fibula. So that one I think was the first snap I heard. It was snapped in half, but it also shattered through the bone," Maxwell told cricket.com.au's Unplayable Podcast previously. Despite the harrowing nature of the injury, Maxwell is ahead in his rehabilitation process. The all-rounder revealed that he had started to walk around a ''little''. “I’m starting to walk around a little bit more comfortable. Hopefully get rid of the crutches in a couple of days. Things are starting to look up." Maxwell was part of the Australian contingent at the T20 World Cup. However, the injury forced him to skip BBL, the ongoing Test series against South Africa and potentially, the Border-Gavaskar trophy, scheduled to be held in India next year. A video of sports reporter in the US has gone viral on social media platforms after he went on a lengthy rant when asked to cover the extreme weather conditions, currently prevailing across the USA.

A video of sports reporter in the US has gone viral on social media platforms after he went on a lengthy rant when asked to cover the extreme weather conditions, currently prevailing across the USA. Mark Woodley, a journalist who usually covers sports for KWWL news channel in Waterloo, Iowa was sent out to cover the snowstorm. While most would have put their brave face on and reported on the event, the bone-freezing conditions appear to have made Woodley, a little bit cranky. Safe to say, the reporter did not want to work on a chilly Thursday morning. Wearing winter gear and standing in the middle of an Arctic blitz, Woodley had a grimace on his face from the beginning. When the studio anchor asked Woodley how he was doing, the sports anchor had a rather amusing answer to it. "Again, the same way I felt when you asked me this question eight minutes ago," said Woodley. "I usually do sports, but everything here is canceled for the next couple days, so what better time to ask the sports guy to come in about five hours earlier than he would normally wake up, go stand out in the wind and the snow and the cold and tell other people not to do the same," added the annoyed journalist. The quotable quips continued to roll out as Woodley said he had both good and bad news with him during the reporting. "I've got good news and I've got bad news. The good news is that I can still feel my face. The bad news is I kind of wish I couldn't." This is what you get when you ask the sports guy to come in to cover a blizzard in the morning show. pic.twitter.com/h0RL9tVQqg — Mark Woodley (@MarkWoodleyTV) December 22, 2022 × "This is a really long show. Tune in for the next couple hours to watch me progressively get crankier and crankier." Despite his obvious irritation at being asked to report from the field, Woodley managed to complete the shift. However, as the sun was coming up, Woodley jokingly requested to have his old job back. “Can I go back to my regular job? I’m pretty sure, Ryan, you guys added an extra hour to the show just because somebody likes torturing me. Compared to two and a half hours ago, it is just getting colder and colder.” Read more: US: More than 4,400 flights cancelled on Friday as travellers face harrowing Christmas week Extreme weather across the country disrupted the power lines of more than 1.25 million homes and businesses across the southern and eastern US on Friday morning.
