<p>Elon Musk-founded firm SpaceX has warned that it may stop funding the Starlink satellite internet service in Ukraine, an ‘essential part of critical infrastructure’ and source of communication for Ukraine’s military amid the war with Russia, and has asked the Pentagon to foot the bill now.<br />
<br />
SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet terminals have been a crucial means of communication for Ukraine's military, enabling it to fight and stay connected even as cellular phone and internet networks were destroyed in its conflict with Russia.</p>

<p>According to documents accessed by CNN, Elon Musk’s SpaceX had sent a letter to the Pentagon last month informing that it could no longer afford to provide the Starlink service in the same way and requested it to take over funding, demanding contribution in tens of millions of dollars per month.<br />
<br />
SpaceX claimed that the services would cost over $120 million for the rest of the year and could cost close to $400 million for the next 12 months, the report said.<br />
<br />
Musk tweeted on Friday that the operation had already cost SpaceX $80 million and will cost more than $100 million by the end of the year. To date, almost 20,000 Starlink satellites have been donated to Ukraine.</p>

<p>SpaceX has warned the Pentagon that it may discontinue its satellite services in Ukraine unless the US military contributes tens of millions of dollars each month.</p>

Amid US-Russia unease over Ukraine war, SpaceX spaceship takes Russian cosmonaut to ISS

Saudi Arabia is planning to launch two astronauts to the International Space Station aboard a space capsule from Elon Musk’s SpaceX. It has become the latest Gulf nation to strengthen ties with private U.S. space companies. Eric Njoka tells you more.

<p>Saudi Arabia is planning to launch two astronauts to the International Space Station aboard a space capsule from Elon Musk's SpaceX, becoming the latest Gulf nation to strengthen ties with private U.S. space companies, according to three people familiar with the arrangement.</p>

<p>The sources, speaking anonymously to discuss the mission's crew before its formal announcement, said the deal was signed privately earlier this year with Houston's Axiom Space, which arranges and manages private missions to space on U.S. spacecraft for researchers and tourists.</p>

<p>Under the deal, two Saudi astronauts will ride SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule to the space station for a roughly weeklong stay early next year, the sources said. The Saudis would be the first from their country to go into space aboard a private spacecraft.</p>

<p>Axiom had no immediate comment. Officials with the Saudi Space Commission, Riyadh's space agency founded in 2018, were not immediately available to comment.</p>

<p>Private U.S. companies have increasingly played a key role in sending astronauts to the space station as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the U.S. space agency now focusing heavily on returning humans to the moon, looks to commercialize the United States' decades-old human spaceflight presence in low-Earth orbit.</p>

<p>The deal would mark the latest that puts companies like Axiom in a unique role of diplomacy long dominated by government agencies like NASA. The space station is a football field-sized laboratory some 250 miles (400 km) above Earth that has housed international crews of astronauts for over 20 years.</p>

<p>The Saudi astronauts will join two previously announced Americans, retired NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson and race car driver and investor John Shoffner, the sources said. The mission, called Ax-2, will be the second spaceflight arranged by Axiom.</p>

<p>The private astronauts aboard Ax-2 have yet to be approved by a NASA-chaired panel of the space station's participating stakeholders and countries, such as Russia, Canada, Japan and the European Space Agency, a U.S. official said. The official added that the mission is likely to receive approval.</p>

<p>For Axiom and other space companies, cutting deals with foreign governments is seen as vital to sustaining a business centered on putting people in space. Putting people into space is a luxury for wealthy adventure seekers and a source of national prestige and inspiration for aspiring space powers like Saudi Arabia.</p>

<p>Axiom launched its first private mission to the space station in April, sending a four-man crew to the space station aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule that included a Canadian investor and an Israeli businessman.</p>

<p>And Axiom on Monday announced a deal with Turkey to launch the country's first two astronauts into space in late 2023. That will likely be for mission Ax-3, according to a person familiar with the flight.</p>

<p>Axiom's astronaut flight business is crucial experience for the company's broader goals of deploying its own private space station by mid-decade. It plans to first attach modules to the ISS before splitting off into a fully private structure once the existing international laboratory is retired around 2030.</p>

<p>The value of Axiom's Saudi agreement was not clear. Each Crew Dragon seat on Axiom's first mission sold for $55 million each.</p>

The official added that the mission is likely to receive approval. Also read | US & Canadian warships sail through Taiwan Strait, second time in three weeks For Axiom and other space companies, cutting deals with foreign governments is seen as vital to sustaining a business centered on putting people in space. Putting people into space is a luxury for wealthy adventure seekers and a source of national prestige and inspiration for aspiring space powers like Saudi Arabia. Axiom launched its first private mission to the space station in April, sending a four-man crew to the space station aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule that included a Canadian investor and an Israeli businessman. And Axiom on Monday announced a deal with Turkey to launch the country's first two astronauts into space in late 2023. That will likely be for mission Ax-3, according to a person familiar with the flight. Axiom's astronaut flight business is crucial experience for the company's broader goals of deploying its own private space station by mid-decade. It plans to first attach modules to the ISS before splitting off into a fully private structure once the existing international laboratory is retired around 2030. The value of Axiom's Saudi agreement was not clear. Each Crew Dragon seat on Axiom's first mission sold for $55 million each.

In a tweet, the NSF said that they are testing SpaceX’s Starlink terminal at McMurdo Station, based on an island right off the coast of Antarctica, as the company has shipped a Starlink dish to the US research facility.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The McMurdo Station is home to at least 1,000 people living and working there during the summer, where the satellite internet is not always reliable given the rough conditions. On Wednesday the tweet by NSF, while announcing SpaceX’s milestone, said that the scientists working in the U.S. Antarctic Programme were “over the moon”, with increasing bandwidth and connectivity. Further indicating that this will help scientists with their work on the remote continent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Subsequently, SpaceX’s Twitter account announced that Starlink is now on all seven continents and how its availability and capability in such a remote location like Antarctica is enabled by the project’s space laser network. Reportedly, McMurdo is one of the most heavily populated stations in Antarctica and while the station already had satellite internet it was really slow and described as patchy. Furthermore, everyone at the base currently shares a 17 Mbps link but will Starlink internet service will be better and not patchy like it was earlier, said the USAP.&nbsp;<br />

Limits of corporate governance norms being tested by Musk's decision of having children with aide

<p>The European Space Agency (ESA) has begun preliminary technical discussions with Elon Musk's SpaceX that could lead to the temporary use of its launchers after the Ukraine conflict blocked Western access to Russia's Soyuz rockets.</p>

<p>The private American competitor to Europe's Arianespace has emerged as a key contender to plug a temporary gap alongside Japan and India, but final decisions depend on the still unresolved timetable for Europe's delayed Ariane 6 rocket.</p>

<p>"I would say there are two and a half options that we're discussing. One is SpaceX that is clear. Another one is possibly Japan," ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher told Reuters.</p>

<p>"Japan is waiting for the inaugural flight of its next generation rocket. Another option could be India," he added in an interview.</p>

<p>"SpaceX I would say is the more operational of those and certainly one of the back-up launches we are looking at."</p>

<p>Aschbacher said talks remained at an exploratory phase.</p>

<p>"We of course need to make sure that they are suitable. It's not like jumping on a bus," he said. For example, the interface between satellite and launcher must be suitable and the payload must not be compromised by unfamiliar types of launch vibration.</p>

<p>"We are looking into this technical compatibility but we have not asked for a commercial offer yet. We just want to make sure that it would be an option in order to make a decision on asking for a firm commercial offer," Aschbacher said.</p>

<p>SpaceX did not reply to a request for comment.</p>

<p>SpaceX's Falcon 9 has already swept up other customers severing ties with Moscow's increasingly isolated space sector amid the Ukraine conflict, but a high-profile European mission could be seen as a significant win for the U.S. rocket maker.</p>

<p>Aschbacher stressed any back-up solution would be temporary, however, adding he was not worried about the future of Ariane 6.</p>

<p>Satellite internet firm OneWeb, a competitor to SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet venture, booked at least one Falcon 9 launch in March. It has also booked an Indian launch.</p>

<p>On Monday, Northrop Grumman booked three Falcon 9 missions to ferry NASA cargo to the International Space Station while it designs a new version of its Antares rocket, whose Russian-made engines were withdrawn by Moscow in response to sanctions.</p>

<p><strong>'WAKE-UP CALL'</strong></p>

<p>Europe has until now depended on the Italian Vega for small payloads, Russia's Soyuz for medium ones and the Ariane 5 for heavy missions. Its next-generation Vega C staged a debut last month and the new Ariane 6, designed in two versions to replace both the Ariane 5 and Soyuz, has been delayed until next year.</p>

<p>Aschbacher said a more precise Ariane 6 schedule would be clearer by October after current hot-firing testing. ESA would then finalise a back-up plan to be presented to ministers of the agency's 22 nations in November, he said, adding the most recent Ariane 6 delay was not the result of any significant new setback.</p>

<p>"But yes, the likelihood of the need for back-up launches is high," he said. "The order of magnitude is certainly a good handful of launches that we would need interim solutions for."</p>

<p>Aschbacher said the Ukraine conflict had demonstrated Europe's decade-long cooperation strategy with Russia in gas supplies and other areas including space was no longer working.</p>

The European Space Agency (ESA) has begun preliminary technical discussions with Elon Musk's SpaceX that could lead to the temporary use of its launchers after the Ukraine conflict blocked Western access to Russia's Soyuz rockets. The private American competitor to Europe's Arianespace has emerged as a key contender to plug a temporary gap alongside Japan and India, but final decisions depend on the still unresolved timetable for Europe's delayed Ariane 6 rocket. "I would say there are two and a half options that we're discussing. One is SpaceX that is clear. Another one is possibly Japan," ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher told Reuters. "Japan is waiting for the inaugural flight of its next generation rocket. Another option could be India," he added in an interview. "SpaceX I would say is the more operational of those and certainly one of the back-up launches we are looking at." Aschbacher said talks remained at an exploratory phase. "We of course need to make sure that they are suitable. It's not like jumping on a bus," he said. For example, the interface between satellite and launcher must be suitable and the payload must not be compromised by unfamiliar types of launch vibration. "We are looking into this technical compatibility but we have not asked for a commercial offer yet. We just want to make sure that it would be an option in order to make a decision on asking for a firm commercial offer," Aschbacher said. SpaceX did not reply to a request for comment. SpaceX's Falcon 9 has already swept up other customers severing ties with Moscow's increasingly isolated space sector amid the Ukraine conflict, but a high-profile European mission could be seen as a significant win for the U.S. rocket maker. Aschbacher stressed any back-up solution would be temporary, however, adding he was not worried about the future of Ariane 6. Satellite internet firm OneWeb, a competitor to SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet venture, booked at least one Falcon 9 launch in March. It has also booked an Indian launch. On Monday, Northrop Grumman booked three Falcon 9 missions to ferry NASA cargo to the International Space Station while it designs a new version of its Antares rocket, whose Russian-made engines were withdrawn by Moscow in response to sanctions. 'WAKE-UP CALL' Europe has until now depended on the Italian Vega for small payloads, Russia's Soyuz for medium ones and the Ariane 5 for heavy missions. Its next-generation Vega C staged a debut last month and the new Ariane 6, designed in two versions to replace both the Ariane 5 and Soyuz, has been delayed until next year. Aschbacher said a more precise Ariane 6 schedule would be clearer by October after current hot-firing testing. ESA would then finalise a back-up plan to be presented to ministers of the agency's 22 nations in November, he said, adding the most recent Ariane 6 delay was not the result of any significant new setback. "But yes, the likelihood of the need for back-up launches is high," he said. "The order of magnitude is certainly a good handful of launches that we would need interim solutions for." Aschbacher said the Ukraine conflict had demonstrated Europe's decade-long cooperation strategy with Russia in gas supplies and other areas including space was no longer working. "This was a wake up call, that we have been too dependent on Russia. And this wake-up call, we have to hope that decision makers realise it as much as I do, that we have to really strengthen our European capability and independence." However, he played down the prospect of Russia carrying out a pledge to withdraw from the International Space Station (ISS). Russia’s newly appointed space chief Yuri Borisov said in a televised meeting with President Vladimir Putin last month that Russia would withdraw from the ISS "after 2024". But Borisov later clarified that Russia’s plans had not changed and Western officials said Russia’s space agency had not communicated any new pullout plans. SpaceX launches Falcon 9 with 52 Starlink satellites, what’s Musk’s motive?

South Korea has joined the race to the Moon with the launch of its first lunar orbiter. The satellite launched by SpaceX is taking a long, roundabout path to conserve fuel and will enter the Moon’s orbit in December.

Highlighting Musk's role in what he called a "Dogecoin Crypto Pyramid Scheme," Johnson has submitted his tweets including one promising that SpaceX would "put a literal Dogecoin on the literal moon." <p>Combs explained that the long, blobby "body" of the jellyfish is, simply, exhaust leaving the Falcon 9's rocket engine nozzle.</p>

<p>The reason the exhaust takes on such a bulbous shape has to do with the pressure difference inside and outside the nozzle.</p>

<p>To match the ambient background pressure in the atmosphere, the rocket exhaust drops its own pressure by expanding as soon as it leaves the nozzle, he said.</p>

<p>"In under-expanded exhaust you get expansion fans at the nozzle exit to decrease pressure and match background: jellyfish, at high altitude.”</p>

<p>Now explaining the reason behind the glow, Comb said that it is purely because of the timing.</p>

<p>Since the rocket launch occurred in the pre-dawn hours of Thursday morning (around 5:45 a.m. local time), light from the sun came from just over the horizon, illuminating up the exhaust plume, causing it to glow brightly against the dark sky, he said.</p>

<p>Rocket Lab USA Inc, a California-based company, captured a falling rocket mid-air after its launch on Tuesday.</p>

<p>Earlier, the rocket had launched 34 satellites from New Zealand at roughly 10:50 a.m. local time (6:50 p.m. Eastern time).</p>

<p>Rocket Lab is trying a novel cost-savings approach to recovering used rockets for multiple missions to space. Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk's company SpaceX pioneered the industry trend.</p>

<p>For its demonstration, Rocket Lab used parachutes and a long cable hanging from a helicopter that was steered by two pilots over the four-story-tall Electron booster stage.</p>

<p>The company broadcasted its mission to catch a falling rocket with a helicopter on a live stream.</p>

<p>However, the small launch firm's mission was only a partially successful test as it dropped the rocket booster into the Pacific Ocean after catching it.</p>

<p>A Rocket lab spokesperson later confirmed that it had noticed "different load characteristics" than what had been experienced during previous capture tests.</p>

<p>The company's chief executive Peter Beck wrote on Twitter, "The rocket splashed down safely and the ship is loading it now."</p>

Rocket Lab USA Inc, a California-based company, captured a falling rocket mid-air after its launch on Tuesday. Earlier, the rocket had launched 34 satellites from New Zealand at roughly 10:50 a.m. local time (6:50 p.m. Eastern time). Rocket Lab is trying a novel cost-savings approach to recovering used rockets for multiple missions to space. Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk's company SpaceX pioneered the industry trend. The company broadcasted its mission to catch a falling rocket with a helicopter on a live stream. However, the small launch firm's mission was only a partially successful test as it dropped the rocket booster into the Pacific Ocean after catching it. A Rocket lab spokesperson later confirmed that it had noticed "different load characteristics" than what had been experienced during previous capture tests. The company's chief executive Peter Beck wrote on Twitter, "The rocket splashed down safely and the ship is loading it now."
