The definition of ‘utopia’ is different for different people. When you're rich you don't need to look for it, you can just make your own utopia. This is what billionaire Elon Musk is doing. As per reports, the Twitter, and Tesla CEO, is planning to set up his own town just outside of Austin, Texas. A Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report citing land records and deeds reveals that it will be located along the Colorado River.

What will Elon Musk do with a whole town?

The report claims that this new town will serve as housing for Austin-area employees of Musk's companies: Tesla, SpaceX and The Boring Company.

Watch | What explains the sky-high valuation of Tesla and brand Elon Musk?

What will the town be called?

Reportedly, the town will not be called 'Elonland', 'Muskville' or even be named after the billionaire. Rather, it will be named 'Snailbrook' after The Boring Company's mascot — Gary the Snail.

Streets in the town will have names like 'Boring Boulevard', 'Waterjet Way' and 'Cutterhead Crossing'. These names have reportedly been approved by Bastrop County officials in county meetings.

Where will it be located?

Snailbrook as per the WSJ report will be situated around 35 miles from Austin, in Bastrop County.

Executives at the Boring Co. have reportedly discussed and researched, incorporating the town there. However, so far, the county hasn't received any applications from them.

Over the last four years, Elon Musk's companies have purchased 3,500 acres in the Austin area. This is equal to land four times the size of New York's massive Central Park. This figure is based on county deeds and other land records.

Citing local real-estate and land officials, WSJ says that the size of the land the Twitter CEO owns might actually be more — as much as 6,000 acres.

Why would Musk's employees leave their houses and move there?

The housing in Snailbrook will be available to Elon Musk's employees at reduced rents.

Starting last year, Boring employees could apply for cheaper homes with rents starting from just $800 a month for two or three-bedroom houses. This is around three times cheaper than the current market rate.

Currently, the average rent in Bastrop, Texas, as per real-estate listing company Zillow Group Inc stands at around $2,200 a month.

What about the employees' families?

They will, of course, be permitted to reside in Snailbrook. As per the WSJ report, the Boring Company even plans to convert a home on the property into a Montessori school for as many as 15 students.

What do we know about its design?

Given the businessman's flair for innovation, it for sure won't be just some boring town. Work at the site has already begun, and it will house modular homes, a pool and an outdoor sports area so the employees can stay fit.

Reportedly, Musk, his former girlfriend Grimes and Kanye West a.k.a Ye last year had several discussions over what the town might look like.

So, when do they move in?

Most probably as soon as the construction is done.

The billionaire may even have plans to have the town incorporated. But, before Musk can apply for incorporation or charter from the state, Snailbrook will need at least 201 residents and a county judge's approval.

Bastrop County, as per its spokesperson, is yet to receive an application from Musk or any of his entities.

Once Snailbrook gets incorporated, it will legally be allowed to have its own elected officials, and make its own rules.

Why did Elon Musk choose Texas?

Before Texas, California was Musk's home. However, the billionaire left his longtime home some two years back. His companies, Tesla and The Boring Company, also had their headquarters moved from California to Texas.

This, as per a 2021 statement by the Tesla CEO, is because California is the land of "overregulation, overlitigation, overtaxation".

Will the billionaire live in Snailbrook?

Yes, the report citing 'people familiar with the plans' claims that the plans for Snailbrook include a project to build a private residential compound for Musk.

However, this private compound won't be located within the rest of the employee housing. It'll be at some distance from the planned town.

Texas, as per WSJ, has "fewer zoning laws and environmental and labour requirements, and has vast swaths of loosely regulated land". Additionally, Texas does not impose corporate income tax or income or capital gains taxes on individuals.

Even as the plans and construction for Snailbrook town progress at breakneck speed, residents of the area aren't too happy. David Barrow, who runs a farm in Bastrop, is worried the new projects could threaten the Colorado River's water quality.

His worries may be justified. Recently, the Boring Company applied for a permit from Texas state environmental authorities. This permit seeks to discharge up to 140,000 gallons of industrial wastewater a day into the Colorado River.

"I would like to know what is actually being sprayed, what they’re actually building, and who is going to hold them accountable," says the farmer.

Adena Lewis, the county’s director of tourism and economic development, however, says she has no concerns that the company's development could harm the river or surrounding farmland. Despite this, after being approached by the county's farmers, State Senator Sarah Eckhardt requested a public environmental hearing.

"We’re going to need to have more of a conversation and be able to verify the assertions that these companies are making with regard to the discharge permit into the Colorado River," she said. The hearing is scheduled for this month.

SpaceX, the rocket company of Elon Musk, on Thursday launched a four-person crew on a mission to the International Space Station, starting their six-month stay in space.

The SpaceX launch vehicle, which is carrying NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen and Woody Hoburg, the United Arab Emirates Sultan Al-Neyadi and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, Florida on Thursday at 12:34 am ET.

The Crew Dragon, which was carrying the astronauts, got detached from the rocket after it reached orbit, and as per estimates, it will spend about one day manoeuvring through space before it gets linked up with the space station. As per scientists, the capsule should dock at 1:17 a.m. ET Friday.

SpaceX Crew Dragon preps for lift-off, to dock with ISS

Elon Musk's SpaceX is racing to make wi-fi available in airplanes with a rollout of Starlink Aviation. The constellation of thousands of Starlink satellites already in orbit around the Earth will be used to make internet available, for now, in private jets. To facilitate this, Starlink Aviation is offering customers a USD 150,000 airplane antenna. Charges for the antenna would be one-time. On top of that the customers will have to shell out USD 12,500 to 25,000 per month for the internet service in their private jet.

These customers, likely millionaires and billionaires, would be able to use internet with speeds of up to 350 Mbps. This is enough for video conferences and even gaming.

Booking for such a connection can be made now by paying USD 5000. Starlink Aviation will begin delivering terminals in mid-2023.

The competition for airborne connectivity is heating up.

In addition to Starlink, Britain-backed satellite operator OneWeb is courting airlines and private jets. The market is currently dominated by companies such as Inmarsat and its rival ViaSat.

OneWeb on Tuesday announced an agreement with in-flight broadband giant Panasonic Avionics, which offers service to some 70 airlines, to market and sell OneWeb's broadband service to airlines by mid-2023.

Britain's competition regulator last week referred Viasat's planned takeover of rival Inmarsat for an in-depth investigation over concerns the tie-up could hamper new competition in the aviation connectivity market and increase prices for airlines' on-board Wi-Fi.

SpaceX plans to offer Starlink internet connectivity to Hawaiian Airlines planes next year. The company offers the service for maritime customers and RVs, and already has tens of thousands of individual consumers paying $110 a month with a $599 terminal.

SpaceX engineers in Texas cranked up the world's most powerful rocket, firing 31 methane-burning Raptor engines in the company's gargantuan Super Heavy booster for a seven-second test run to help clear the way for an unpiloted maiden flight as early as next month.

SpaceX test fires powerful super heavy booster

Elon Musk’s SpaceX carried out a successful static fire test of the engines of its Super Heavy rocket booster on February 9, thereby achieving a critical milestone of inching closer to its first orbital flight in the coming months, as reported by Reuters. The rockets are part of the company's Starship system designed to carry out space expeditions, including carrying humans to Mars and the Moon. Speaking about the success of the mission, Elon Musk stressed on the vision that his space vehicle will one day carry humans to Mars.

The test was conducted at SpaceX’s Starbase facility located in South Texas and witnessed 31 of the 33 engines being ignited. A drone footage of the test was tweeted by SpaceX, that shows the booster engines igniting for several seconds and kicking up a dust storm while being strapped to the ground. “Views from drone of Booster 7's static fire test,” the caption read.

SpaceX has curbed Ukraine's use of Starlink internet devices for controlling drones in the region during the country's war with Russia. The space company's president said on Wednesday that steps have been taken to prevent Ukrainian forces from using the satellite internet service for controlling drones as they don't want it to be used for "offensive purposes".

After Russia launched the invasion last year in February, SpaceX provided Ukraine with thousands of Starlink dishes. These devices help people to link with satellites and stay connected to the internet.

SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service has provided the Ukrainian military with broadband communications during the ongoing war. However, reports emerged that the military had used the Starlink service to control drones.

Meanwhile, Gwynne Shotwell, who is SpaceX's president and chief operating officer, said during a conference in Washington, DC that it was "never never meant to be weaponised".

Shotwell said, "However, Ukrainians have leveraged it in ways that were unintentional and not part of any agreement."

During the Russia-Ukraine war so far, Kyiv used unmanned aircraft effectively. As reported, they used drones for spotting enemy positions, targeting long-range fires and dropping bombs.

Shotwell said that "there are things that we can do to limit their ability to do that. There are things that we can do, and have done." Shotwell said that the use of Starlink with drones went beyond the scope of an agreement SpaceX has with the Ukrainian government.

An established actor in the Indian television space, Dev Joshi was in the midst of a shoot when he came across the 'dearMoon Project'.

Announced in 2018 and entirely funded by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, the project would take eight individuals along with Maezawa on a week-long trip to the moon on board a SpaceX Starship and Superheavy rocket. The initiative is aimed at promoting art and global peace.

"It was my interest about space that motivated me to try and apply, sometime in 2021 when the applications were invited...Then on, there were assignments, Zoom meetings and finally an in-person meeting with Yusaku Maezawa in 2021 (at a location that I'm not permitted to disclose)," Joshi recalls.

The youngster says he cherished his interactions with the 47-year-old Japanese billionaire as both shared their aspirations and outlook.

"He didn't have the airs of a big billionaire, we enjoyed a game of table tennis and listened to music together."

Several rigorous and expensive medical tests and interviews later, Dev knew that he had made it to the "dear Moon CREW". However, it was only in December 2022 that the formal announcement was made.

Dev sees it as a huge opportunity for his generation and his home country India, as this is a first-of-its-kind project and the most ambitious space tourism venture.

His co-passengers on this mission are artists from across domains, hailing from South Korea, USA, UK, Japan, Czech Republic, and Ireland.

"Even today only astronauts and scientists are going to space and beyond...I believe that a team of diverse artists heading to Lunar orbit will give rise to artistic perspectives about the experience and will inspire the next generation... We are even having a discussion on what we can carry to space - musical instruments, cameras, costumes etc.," Joshi says.

While there is cheer and excitement about this journey, there are immense risks involved because it's an all-new rocket and spacecraft and the crew onboard is a team without a scientific background.

Following the first orbital test of the new rocket, sometime in 2023, the crew is expected to undergo rigorous training to undertake the journey.

Dev's businessman father Dushyant and homemaker mother Devangna are equally excited about what lies ahead for their son. Dev held discussions and sought his parents' mentorship at every stage of the process.
"Not much fear...of course it is risky...we are excited...the feeling cannot be expressed in words..." the parents say.

Usually, those in their early 20s would be bidding goodbye to their parents, while heading abroad for higher studies. In this case, it's a trip to the lunar orbit, the greatest adventure and risk in human history.

While the actual flight is scheduled to happen in 2023, a lot of questions remain unanswered - the mission readiness and safety record of the SpaceX Starship and Superheavy rocket, whether an uncrewed flight would first be carried out to lunar orbit, whether the crew is adequately prepared for such a daunting task.

It must be remembered, despite their experience of the Apollo lunar landing missions in the 60s and 70s, even NASA is taking a safe approach by performing unmanned flights to the moon, before the actual manned mission as part of the ongoing Artemis programme.

"I trust Elon Musk and SpaceX," says Dev, confident about the historic journey.

A seat on a rocket that would fly from Earth to the Moon's orbit, an opportunity to reach the furthest that earthly humans ever have and to return to the planet that we call home. All for Free! Would you sign up? If all goes well, Dev Joshi, a 22-year-old from India will be accomplishing all of the above well before he turns 24. Indian Astronaut Rakesh Sharma has been the only Indian citizen to travel to space. He accomplished the feat way back in 1984, as part of the Soviet Interkosmos programme. Dev aspires to be the second Indian to match Sharma's feat as India's own national astronaut mission 'Gaganyaan' is expected to kick off, only by the end of 2024 or later. WION spoke to Dev Joshi to understand his thoughts on the immense calculated risk he has chosen to take and what he hopes to gain from this out-of-the-world experience. Read more: ISRO to carry out two test missions, two uncrewed missions before ‘Gaganyaan’ astronaut flight "It was my interest about space that motivated me to try and apply, sometime in 2021 when the applications were invited...Then on, there were assignments, Zoom meetings and finally an in-person meeting with Yusaku Maezawa in 2021 (at a location that I'm not permitted to disclose)," Joshi recalls. The youngster says he cherished his interactions with the 47-year-old Japanese billionaire as both shared their aspirations and outlook. "He didn't have the airs of a big billionaire, we enjoyed a game of table tennis and listened to music together." Several rigorous and expensive medical tests and interviews later, Dev knew that he had made it to the "dear Moon CREW". Read more: Indian start-up partners with ISRO to develop satellite-based QKD secure communication While there is cheer and excitement about this journey, there are immense risks involved because it's an all-new rocket and spacecraft and the crew onboard is a team without a scientific background. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

"Just received this email from Twitter. This is an actual, real email that was autogenerated," tweeted Musk with ROFL emojis.
