<p>The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said that the failure in the rocket's launch is being investigated. The H3 rocket was built by Japan to increase the nation's independent access to space and increase its chances of seizing a major share in the global launch market in comparison to its rival Elon Musk's SpaceX.</p>

<p>The test was conducted at SpaceX’s Starbase facility located in South Texas and witnessed 31 of the 33 engines being ignited. <p>SpaceX has curbed Ukraine's use of Starlink internet devices for controlling drones in the region during the country's war with Russia. The space company's president said on Wednesday that steps have been taken to prevent Ukrainian forces from using the satellite internet service for controlling drones as they don't want it to be used for "offensive purposes".&nbsp;</p>

<p>After Russia launched the invasion last year in February, SpaceX provided Ukraine with thousands of Starlink dishes. These devices help people to link with satellites and stay connected to the internet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service has provided the Ukrainian military with broadband communications during the ongoing war. However, reports emerged that the military had used the Starlink service to control drones.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the Russia-Ukraine war so far, Kyiv used unmanned aircraft effectively. As reported, they used drones for spotting enemy positions, targeting long-range fires and dropping bombs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shotwell said that "there are things that we can do to limit their ability to do that. There are things that we can do, and have done."&nbsp;Shotwell said that the use of Starlink with drones went beyond the scope of an agreement SpaceX has with the Ukrainian government.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Starlink is a satellite internet constellation operated by SpaceX which provides satellite internet access coverage to 45 countries. As of December 2022, Starlink has over 3,300 mass-produced small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), which communicate with designated ground transceivers.&nbsp;</p>

Iran now has around 100 active Starlinks, claims Elon Musk

<p>Indian Astronaut Rakesh Sharma has been the only Indian citizen to travel to space. He accomplished the feat&nbsp;way&nbsp;back in 1984, as part of the Soviet Interkosmos programme.</p>

<p>Dev aspires to be the second Indian to match Sharma's feat&nbsp;as India's own national astronaut mission 'Gaganyaan' is expected to kick off, only by the end of 2024 or later.</p>

<p><em><strong>WION spoke to Dev Joshi </strong></em>to understand his thoughts on the immense calculated risk he has chosen to take and what he hopes to gain from this out-of-the-world experience.</p>

<p>An established actor in the Indian television space, Dev Joshi was in the midst of a shoot when he came across the 'dearMoon Project'.</p>

<p>Announced in 2018 and entirely funded by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, the project would take eight individuals along with Maezawa on a week-long trip to the moon on board a SpaceX Starship and Superheavy rocket. The initiative is aimed at promoting art and global peace.</p>

<p>The youngster says he cherished his&nbsp;interactions with the 47-year-old Japanese billionaire as both shared their aspirations and outlook.</p>

<p>"He didn't have the airs of a big billionaire, we enjoyed a game of table tennis and listened to music together."</p>

<p>Several rigorous and expensive medical tests and interviews later, Dev knew that he had made it to the "dear Moon CREW". However, it was only in December 2022 that the formal announcement was made.</p>

<p>Dev sees it as a huge opportunity for his generation and his home country India, as this is a first-of-its-kind project and the most ambitious space tourism venture.</p>

<p>His co-passengers on this mission are artists from across domains, hailing from South Korea, USA, UK, Japan, Czech Republic, and Ireland.</p>

<p>"Even today only astronauts and scientists are going to space and beyond...I believe that a team of diverse artists heading to Lunar orbit will give rise to artistic perspectives about the experience and will inspire the next generation... We are even having a discussion on what we can carry to space - musical instruments, cameras,costumes etc.," Joshi says.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dev's businessman father Dushyant and homemaker mother Devangna are equally excited about what lies ahead for their son. Dev held discussions and sought his parents' mentorship at every stage of the process.&nbsp;<br />
"Not much fear...of course it is risky...we are excited...the feeling cannot be expressed in words..." the parents say.</p>

<p>Usually, those in their early 20s would be bidding goodbye to their parents, while heading abroad for higher studies. In this case, it's a trip to the lunar orbit, the greatest adventure and risk in human history.</p>

<p>While the actual flight is scheduled to happen in 2023, a lot of questions remain unanswered - the mission readiness and safety record of the SpaceX Starship and Superheavy rocket, whether an uncrewed flight would first be carried out to lunar orbit, whether the crew is adequately prepared for such a daunting task.</p>

<p>It&nbsp;must be remembered, despite their experience of the Apollo lunar landing missions in the 60s and 70s, even NASA is taking a safe approach by performing unmanned flights to the moon, before the actual manned mission as part of the ongoing Artemis programme.</p>

<p>"I trust Elon Musk and SpaceX," says Dev, confident about the historic journey.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The NASA-led mission being launched in collaboration with Elon Musk's SpaceX has been dubbed SWOT, or Surface Water and Ocean Topography and is designed to give scientists an unprecedented view of around 70 per cent of the Earth's surface.</p>

<p>SWOT, one of the 15 missions listed by the National Research Council as projects the American space agency should undertake in the coming decade, has been designed and built by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) &nbsp;in collaboration with French and Canadian counterparts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>SWOT as per Reuters has been in development for over 20 years. It incorporates advanced microwave radar technology that according to scientists will collect height-surface measurements of water bodies (oceans, lakes, reservoirs and rivers) in high-definition detail over 90 per cent of the globe.</p>

<p>The project will also help enhance ocean circulation models, bolster weather and climate forecasts, and contribute to managing scarce freshwater supplies in drought-stricken regions.</p>

<p>As per the plan, the satellite will gather data over several months. The data will be compiled from sweeps that'll be done twice every 21 days.</p>

<p>Collecting such data as per NASA's SWOT freshwater science lead, Tamlin Pavelsky, was akin to "taking the pulse of the world's water system, so we'll be able to see when it's racing and we'll be able to see when it's slow."</p>

<p>We know that the planet's oceans absorb an estimated 90 per cent r more of the excess heat trapped in Earth's atmosphere. SWOT aims to explore how the heat that is resultant of human activities and the greenhouse gas emissions generated from them, impacts climate change and moderates global temperatures.</p>

<p>“We have our foot on the gas to do everything we possibly can to support the aspirations of the Iranian people. That is our policy, period. At the same time, it is truly an Iranian movement led by young girls and spreading to other aspects of society. And we do not want to in any way eclipse their movement," a senior administrator was quoted as saying by the publication.</p>

<p>“We are interested in finding ways to ensure that the Iranian people can have access to the internet on their phones and everywhere else.&nbsp;And so Starlink is one option, but it is not the only option," added the official.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, other senior officials were apprehensive about having Musk on board for another major theater after Ukraine.</p>

<p>“He’s a loose cannon we can never predict,” said a senior US defence official.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“With these changes, we are helping the Iranian people be better equipped to counter the government’s efforts to surveil and censor them,” he added.</p>

<p>Internet access is often curbed in Iran to stop protesters from posting videos on social media.</p>

<p>In 2019, the government shut down the internet for about a week to stifle fuel protests which turned political, sparking the bloodiest crackdown in the 40-year history of the Islamic Republic.</p>

<p>Elon Musk-founded firm SpaceX has warned that it may stop funding the Starlink satellite internet service in Ukraine, an ‘essential part of critical infrastructure’ and source of communication for Ukraine’s military amid the war with Russia, and has asked the Pentagon to foot the bill now.<br />

SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet terminals have been a crucial means of communication for Ukraine's military, enabling it to fight and stay connected even as cellular phone and internet networks were destroyed in its conflict with Russia.</p>

<p>According to documents accessed by CNN, Elon Musk’s SpaceX had sent a letter to the Pentagon last month informing that it could no longer afford to provide the Starlink service in the same way and requested it to take over funding, demanding contribution in tens of millions of dollars per month.<br />
<br />
SpaceX claimed that the services would cost over $120 million for the rest of the year and could cost close to $400 million for the next 12 months, the report said.<br />

Musk tweeted on Friday that the operation had already cost SpaceX $80 million and will cost more than $100 million by the end of the year. To date, almost 20,000 Starlink satellites have been donated to Ukraine.</p>

<p>SpaceX has warned the Pentagon that it may discontinue its satellite services in Ukraine unless the US military contributes tens of millions of dollars each month.</p>

<p>“We are not in a position to further donate terminals to Ukraine, or fund the existing terminals for an indefinite period of time,” SpaceX’s director of government sales wrote to the Pentagon in the September letter.</p>

<p>A request for nearly 8,000 additional Starlink terminals made directly to Musk in July by the commanding general of the Ukrainian military, General Valerii Zaluzhniy, is among the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/worlds-first-space-tourist-plans-new-flight-to-moon-aboard-spacex-starship-525038">SpaceX</a> documents given to the Pentagon and seen by CNN.</p>

<p>In a separate cover letter to the Pentagon, an outside consultant working for SpaceX wrote, “SpaceX faces terribly difficult decisions here. I do not think they have the financial ability to provide any additional terminals or service as requested by General Zaluzhniy.”</p>

<p>The previously unreported records offer an unusual breakdown of SpaceX's own internal Starlink data, including the expenses and expenditures related to many terminals in Ukraine. They also shed new light on covert discussions that gave Ukraine communications equipment and services worth millions of dollars at minimal expense to Kiev.</p>

<p>The announcement by SpaceX that it will discontinue supporting Starlink also coincides with growing scepticism about Musk's allegiance in Ukraine. Musk recently tweeted a peace proposal that calls on Ukraine to cede control of the eastern territories of Luhansk and Donetsk as well as Crimea, and came under fire on Twitter drawing from Ukrainian leadership, including President Volodymyr Zelensky.</p>

According to documents accessed by CNN, Elon Musk’s SpaceX had sent a letter to the Pentagon last month informing that it could no longer afford to provide the Starlink service in the same way and requested it to take over funding, demanding contribution in tens of millions of dollars per month. SpaceX claimed that the services would cost over $120 million for the rest of the year and could cost close to $400 million for the next 12 months, the report said. Musk tweeted on Friday that the operation had already cost SpaceX $80 million and will cost more than $100 million by the end of the year. To date, almost 20,000 Starlink satellites have been donated to Ukraine. SpaceX has warned the Pentagon that it may discontinue its satellite services in Ukraine unless the US military contributes tens of millions of dollars each month. A request for nearly 8,000 additional Starlink terminals made directly to Musk in July by the commanding general of the Ukrainian military, General Valerii Zaluzhniy, is among the SpaceX documents given to the Pentagon and seen by CNN. In a separate cover letter to the Pentagon, an outside consultant working for SpaceX wrote, “SpaceX faces terribly difficult decisions here. I do not think they have the financial ability to provide any additional terminals or service as requested by General Zaluzhniy.” The previously unreported records offer an unusual breakdown of SpaceX's own internal Starlink data, including the expenses and expenditures related to many terminals in Ukraine. They also shed new light on covert discussions that gave Ukraine communications equipment and services worth millions of dollars at minimal expense to Kiev. The announcement by SpaceX that it will discontinue supporting Starlink also coincides with growing scepticism about Musk's allegiance in Ukraine. <p>Almost two weeks ago, a Russian Soyuz rocket carried an American astronaut to the orbital platform. Despite the rising tensions between the US and Russia since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February, the planned astronaut exchange programme has continued.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This collaboration ensures the operation of the ISS, which has become one of the few remaining areas of cooperation between the US and Russia.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA associate administrator Kathy Lueders told reporters in a recent press conference: "When you each are flying other's crew members, you know that you have a huge responsibility that you're promising to the other country."&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Who is Anna Kikina?&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>The 38-year-old Kikina is an engineer by training and will become the fifth Russian female professional cosmonaut to go into space.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Novosibirsk native told AFP in August: "I hope in the near future we have more women in the cosmonaut corps."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kikina will also be the first Russian to fly with Elon Musk's SpaceX which, along with Boeing, has a "taxi service" contract with NASA.&nbsp;</p>
