The Sun has scarred itself, quite literally. A massive explosion on the Sun's surface on July 15 left a “canyon of fire”, a huge mark that astronomers on Earth captured. The solar filament eruption happened on the Sun’s upper left side, releasing a powerful blast of plasma and magnetic fields into space. The event was of such a huge proportion that it left a fiery scar on the Sun. The dent on the sun is 400,000 kilometres long and 20,000 km high, according to Tony Phillips, an astronomer who works with Spaceweather.com. He called it "a grand canyon" on the Sun. Astronomers were already prepared for something like this to happen. They spotted an unusually large, cold and dense gas filament suspended above the Sun’s surface a few days ago. When it finally collapsed, the Solar Dynamics Observatory caught it on camera. Filament eruptions are common on the Sun and are triggered by small instabilities in the Sun’s magnetic field. Scientists have been wondering for years whether there is a ninth planet in our solar system. Now, a study by Japanese scientists seems to bust that belief. They have found an object orbiting the Sun at the very extremes of our star system and have named it Ammonite. Its scientific name is 2023 KQ14, and its discovery has raised a question mark on the existence of Planet Nine. An analysis of its orbit does not align with the calculations done on other cosmic objects roaming in that zone of the solar system. Astronomers in Japan came across “Ammonite” using the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii. They announced its discovery in a paper published on Tuesday (15 July) in Nature Astronomy. Is it a planet or a dwarf planet? Neither. Ammonite is a sednoid, the name given to any cosmic body encircling the Sun beyond Neptune with a highly eccentric orbit. It's only the fourth sednoid ever discovered. 2023 KQ14 comes as close as 66 astronomical units from the sun, and as far away as 252 au. One astronomical unit is equal to the distance between Earth and the Sun. Beyond Neptune, in the Kuiper Belt, several small bodies are orbiting the Sun in highly elongated yet similarly oriented orbits. This includes the dwarf planet Sedna, and 2012 VP113, 2004 VN112, 2010 GB174, 2013 RF98 and 2007 TG422. This unusual clustering triggered the theory that something has pulled them all together there. Astronomers Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown were the first to discuss it in 2016. This led them to believe that a bigger body is likely exerting gravitational pull on them. The existence of Planet Nine would explain this occurrence, as its gravitational pull could be a reason for their similarly aligned orbits. However, 2023 KQ14, despite having an elliptical orbit, follows a different path than the others. Study authors say this raises serious doubts about Planet Nine. "The fact that 2023 KQ14’s current orbit does not align with those of the other three sednoids lowers the likelihood of the Planet Nine hypothesis," said Dr. Yukun Huang of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan in a press release. Scientists have for years been obsessing over it, pointing to major evidence on its existence. It has always been believed to be just so far away that we have not had a chance to observe it. If Planet Nine does exist, it would be bigger in mass than Neptune, and would lie anywhere between 400 and 800 AU (Astronomical Units) from the Sun. The Vera C. New world Sedna discovered in solar system. What this means for Planet Nine

Airport radars are tasked with detecting and tracking aircraft that are flying near an airport. However, a new study has found that they could also be revealing our location to aliens and advanced civilisations. The radars leak electromagnetic energy into space, which can be picked up by living beings as far as 200 light-years away. The study analysed what these signals appear like to extraterrestrials that could be present far away from us. This theory comes with two conditions. First, the alien civilisation should have state-of-the-art radio telescopes like Earth. Second, 200 light-years is how far humans can look to spot aliens with similar technology. The findings were revealed at the Royal Astronomical Society’s National Astronomy Meeting 2025 in Durham.
Airport radars exposing our location to aliens 200 light-years away
The team simulated settings to understand what these radar signals would appear as from nearby stars such as Barnard’s Star and AU Microscopii after leaving Earth and spreading in space. The researchers found that the radio signal sent out by these radars is enough to be picked up by telescopes similar to those we have on Earth. Airport radars generate a combined radio signal of 2×1015 watts, which could be easily detected by telescopes that are the same as the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia. They could be as far as 200 light-years from Earth, and would still be able to pick up these radar signals.
Military radars are stronger
When it comes to military radar systems, the signals being sent out are even more powerful. Military radar systems are more focused and have an accumulated peak emission reaching about 1×1014 watts in a given field-of-view of the observer. The signals emitted by them will be a hundred times stronger from some points in interstellar space. They will also appear to be "clearly artificial" to anyone who has access to powerful radio telescopes. The team concluded that radar signals on any planet could act as a universal sign of intelligent life.
How humans and Earth appear to aliens
The study shows not only how we can learn about other civilisations in the universe, but also what our signals look like in space. Michael Garrett of the University of Manchester, a co-author of the paper, said, "By learning how our signals travel through space, we gain valuable insights into how to protect the radio spectrum for communications and design future radar systems. The methods developed for modelling and detecting these weak signals can also be used in astronomy, planetary defence and even in monitoring the impact of human technology on our space environment.

First, the alien civilisation should have state-of-the-art radio telescopes like Earth. Second, 200 light-years is how far humans can look to spot aliens with similar technology. The findings were revealed at the Royal Astronomical Society’s National Astronomy Meeting 2025 in Durham. Airport radars exposing our location to aliens 200 light-years away The team simulated settings to understand what these radar signals would appear as from nearby stars such as Barnard’s Star and AU Microscopii after leaving Earth and spreading in space. Military radars are stronger When it comes to military radar systems, the signals being sent out are even more powerful. How humans and Earth appear to aliens The study shows not only how we can learn about other civilisations in the universe, but also what our signals look like in space.

Astronomers have discovered a Great Wall in the universe that is so huge that it defies logic and cosmological principles. The Great Wall of Hercules-Corona Borealis is a galaxy cluster that runs for approximately 10 billion light-years. Scientists have established that based on the universe's age, no cosmic structure can exceed 1.2 billion light-years. But the existence of this wall proves that matter is not evenly distributed in the universe. The Great Wall of Hercules-Corona Borealis has only now revealed how monstrous it is. This has become possible by the use of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), which are like beacons in space which throw light on galaxies that are too distant to be observed directly. The study of the Great Wall of Hercules-Corona Borealis is available on arXiv. NASA astronaut Nichole Ayers captured a sprite from the space station while orbiting above Mexico and the United States. Sprites are a rare atmospheric phenomenon that occurs because of intense electrical activity in the storm clouds. Ayers shared the photo on X, and wrote alongside, “Just. Wow. As we went over Mexico and the US this morning, I caught this sprite.” Sprites are a type of Transient Luminous Event (TLE). Its small bursts of light occur high above thunderstorms. Sprite stands for Stratospheric Perturbations Resulting from Intense Thunderstorm Electrification. They are basically massive discharges of electricity in the Earth's upper atmosphere. Sprites have been earlier captured from Earth over the Himalayas. Also Read: Green 'ghosts' and 'red sprites': Scientists reveal what caused strange phenomenon in Himalayas Ayers noted that these pictures taken from space can help scientists understand more about sprites and what's really going on up there.
Red sprites and green ghost captured over Himalayas
In 2022, red sprites were captured over the Himalayas. But at that time, no one knew what they were. The red lights were photographed from near a lake site in the southern Tibetan plateau. A study published in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences found that the red wonder that was seen in the Himalayas was linked to thunderstorms. Two astrophotographers near the Pumoyongcuo Lake in Tibet saw the "dancing red sprites" above the Himalayas. They clicked pictures while being scared at the same time as they looked like dancing jellyfish. It won the Skyscapes category of the 2023 Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition. There were not only red sprites but 16 rare secondary jets. A green airglow called "ghosts" at the base of the ionosphere was recorded for the first time in Asia. “Nearly half of these events involved dancing sprites, with an additional 16 uncommon secondary jets and at least four extremely rare green emissions called ‘ghosts’ observed following the associated sprites,” study authors wrote. They found that the sprites were triggered by a "high-peak current" positive cloud-to-ground lightning strikes within a massive convective system that spanned a cloud area of over 200,000sqkm.

An interstellar object has been spotted moving at a speed of 60km/sec in the solar system, only the third such object ever discovered. That doesn't mean there aren't other such bodies that have visited us from outer space. However, it is hard to detect all of them. This intruder is the largest interstellar object seen zooming inside our solar system. Since it is not orbiting the Sun, it is not bound by its rules. Which means it is free to do what it wants and travel wherever it wishes to. Could this rogue behaviour bring it towards Earth? Does this strange object pose a danger to us or the other planets? The object has been designated 3I/Atlas by the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center. It has been classified as a comet after it was detected by the NASA-funded ATLAS survey in Hawaii on Tuesday.
How long has the interstellar comet been inside the solar system?
As soon as the news broke, amateur astronomers zoomed in on the comet and found that it had been there for over 15 days. Its trajectory was traced back to June 14. Scientists say that the comet is mostly ice and not rock. The object was initially believed to have originated inside the solar system. At the time, it was known as A11pl3Z. However, calculations showed that it is on a journey from outer space. Its trajectory was the tell-tale sign, as it did not follow the orbits most comets inside the solar system are on. Richard Moissl, head of planetary defence at the European Space Agency, said that its trajectory "means it's not orbiting our star, but coming from interstellar space and flying off to there again." A wandering supermassive black hole is inflicting terror on passing stars, creating a horror scene in space. Located 600 million light-years away, this monster cosmic body is invisible and quietly devouring stars. Hubble Space Telescope spotted it, marking the first optical discovery of a supermassive black hole that is roaming around in space. Dubbed "Space Jaws" by astronomers, the black hole isn't strangely sitting at the centre of a galaxy, like they usually do. It is so humongous that it can fit one million suns. But it is a cosmic anomaly, and scientists are trying to learn more about it.A newly identified tidal disruption event (TDE) exposed the killer black hole sitting between stars. The event showed that a black hole had torn apart and devoured a star, releasing a powerful burst of radiation. TDEs help scientists understand how black holes operate, offering an insight into what triggers energetic jets and winds when a star is shredded. This TDE is named AT2024tvd and appeared like a bright flash picked up by Hubble. Notably, black holes have immense gravitational tidal forces. A TDE occurs when a falling star is stretched or "spaghettified" by this force. Also Read: After Mission Bikini, Possible fails: Spacecraft scatters human ashes, marijuana for Mars in Pacific. But this one is wandering and off-centre. Data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the NRAO’s Very Large Array also confirmed that the black hole is located away from the galaxy’s centre. The observation of the strange supermassive black hole was published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.“AT2024tvd is the first offset TDE captured by optical sky surveys, and it opens up the entire possibility of uncovering this elusive population of wandering black holes with future sky surveys,” said lead study author Yuhan Yao of the University of California at Berkeley. Also Read: Rare celestial show: A 'black hole' will cross through Saturn, except it is... Scientists say that in roughly 100 tidal disruption events (TDEs) detected by telescopes, this is the first time a black hole of this size was seen positioned away from a galaxy’s core. All other known TDEs have been tied to central black holes. What' scary is that the galaxy has another supermassive black hole that sits in its usual location - at the centre. It has a mass of 100 million suns and is only about 2,600 light-years from the other black hole that seems to have gone rogue.
Invisible black hole released a cosmic burp, revealing its location
The supermassive black hole is invisible. But when several ground-based sky survey telescopes noticed a bright flare, scientists knew it was not from a supernova. The flare was very hot, which revealed that the flash was from a black hole eating a star. It doesn't show itself a lot, but only once every few tens of thousands of years when it "burps" after feeding on a star. Experts think that the black hole went off-centre because of the three-body problem, where the lowest-mass member is kicked out. If the black hole went through a triple interaction with two other black holes in the galaxy’s core, it can still remain bound to the galaxy, orbiting around the central region,“ said Yao.What is the black hole's future? It might be gradually pulled by the bigger black hole at the centre and merge with it. But we might never know its fate since such cosmic events take millions of years.

The supermassive black hole only reveals itself once every tens of thousands of years. It has gone rogue and is on a killing spree in its galaxy. Hubble Space Telescope caught it red handed devouring a star that was passing by.

But it is a cosmic anomaly, and scientists are trying to learn more about it. A newly identified tidal disruption event (TDE) exposed the killer black hole sitting between stars. It didn't mean to Rogue black hole is roaming in the galaxy Supermassive black holes are almost always situated at the centre of a galaxy. But this one is wandering and off-centre. Data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the NRAO’s Very Large Array also confirmed that the black hole is located away from the galaxy’s centre. The observation of the strange supermassive black hole was published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. “AT2024tvd is the first offset TDE captured by optical sky surveys, and it opens up the entire possibility of uncovering this elusive population of wandering black holes with future sky surveys,” said lead study author Yuhan Yao of the University of California at Berkeley. Invisible black hole released a cosmic burp, revealing its location The supermassive black hole is invisible. If the black hole went through a triple interaction with two other black holes in the galaxy’s core, it can still remain bound to the galaxy, orbiting around the central region,“ said Yao. What is the black hole's future? It might be gradually pulled by the bigger black hole at the centre and merge with it. But we might never know its fate since such cosmic events take millions of years.

The supermassive black hole only reveals itself once every tens of thousands of years. It has gone rogue and is on a killing spree in its galaxy. Hubble Space Telescope caught it red-handed devouring a star that was passing by.

A mission to carry the remains of more than 160 dead people to space and return them to their families failed terribly when the spacecraft carrying them crashed into the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday, June 24. The unfortunate families will never be able to see the remains of their loved ones again. The Exploration Company, a German aerospace startup, carried out "Mission Possible", its first attempt to carry customer payloads. It was part of the Transporter-14 rideshare mission launched by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on June 23 from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base.Nyx, a 1.6-ton reentry capsule, was part of the 70 payloads aboard it. Celestis, a memorial spaceflight company based in Houston, Texas, had provided the human remains. It was intended to return safely to Earth, after which they would have been returned to their families. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has finally taken the first pictures of the universe with the world's most powerful digital camera. The program will take a time-lapse of the universe in 10 years, piecing together fragments of space that have never been seen before. Its first observations within the first few hours of launch are already blowing everyone's minds. In the first 10 hours, the telescope detected 2,104 new asteroids and seven space objects close to Earth. It has taken photos of the Virgo Cluster, a collection of galaxies about 55 million light-years away. The LSST (Legacy Survey of Space and Time) camera took the photo in just 10.5 hours over seven nights. Another photo shows several stars of the Milky Way and also about 10 million other galaxies. Most of these galaxies were observed for the first time. The Rubin Observatory in Chile is the only one that can take such pictures at this scale and so quickly.A spectacular photo captures the Trifid and Lagoon Nebulae approximately 5,000 light-years away for the first time. The picture shows glowing gas and dust, with the Lagoon Nebula making up the most striking part. It is a vibrant stellar nursery 4,000 light-years away, which is churning out new stars. A sudden signal from space surprised astronomers when they found out that it came from a NASA satellite that had not been operational for almost 60 years. The brief, but extremely powerful signal was detected by radio telescopes in Western Australia. It came from Relay 2, a communications satellite launched by NASA in 1964. The signal lasted only a nanosecond, but was brighter than entire galaxies, New Scientist reported.Relay 2 did its job only for about three years and went silent in 1967. NASA declared it dead, and nothing has been transmitted from it since then, until now. It witnessed a burst of activity, prompting a signal to reach Earth. Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), a network of 36 radio telescopes, picked it up. The Indian Government aerospace firm Hindustan Aeronautics Limited(HAL) will soon be completely building, marketing, and launching the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle(SSLV rocket) developed by the Indian Government Space Agency ISRO. Indian Government officials said, this would mean that the SSLV rocket is going to be HAL's property, they can launch it to ferry customers' satellites and demand a price for providing the launch services.Typically, all Indian spacefaring rockets are developed by and belong to the Indian Space Research Organization. ISRO sources rocket components from Indian and foreign vendors, assembles the rocket and launches it. Henceforth, HAL will follow the same process for the SSLV.HAL was finally selected from a list of nine bidders, considering that theirs was the highest techno-commercial bid to secure the Technology Transfer of the SSLV rocket. HAL is also the firm that builds the Indian homegrown fighter jet Tejas, and various other fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft of its own and under licensed production. The SSLV is the Indian Government's latest and smallest spacefaring rocket. ISRO says, the SSLV can carry satellites weighing up to 500kg to orbits 500 km above the earth's surface. SSLV made its debut launch in August 2022, which was a failure. Thereafter, it did two flights - in February 2023 and August 2024, both successes. All three flights so far have been developmental flights. Developmental flights are more like flight tests of the rocket, its crucial components and sub-systems. Once they demonstrate their reliability in developmental flights, the rocket is flown on more routine/operational missions. The agreement for the technology transfer of SSLV is to be signed between HAL, ISRO's commercial arm NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), ISRO, and the Government's Space promotion agency IN-SPACE. According to the Government, the agreement encompasses extensive training and handholding of HAL personnel by ISRO teams, both at ISRO and HAL facilities, for the building and launching of two SSLVs in the next two years. Officials said HAL's bid was for Rs.511cr (approx $59mn), and this sum would be paid in a phased manner.Radhakrishnan Durairaj, CMD, NSIL, said, "We are pleased to be part of this SSLV technology transfer process that would enable HAL to develop this launch vehicle that would cater to launch on-demand needs of global small satellite customer needs. This collaboration marks a significant step towards strengthening India’s commercial satellite launch capabilities and more specifically in enabling Indian industry in realising this SSLV.”Queried about the long delays in rolling out India's Tejas fighter jets and whether HAL's ability to deliver in the rocketry domain, top officials from HAL's Aerospace division outlined that the capability for space manufacturing is different from that of fighter planes. They added that a different manufacturing capacity exists for the space programme and for the fighter jet programme.Dr. Pawan Goenka, Chairman, IN-SPACE, said, after the first to HAL-made SSLV launches supported by ISRO, HAL is free to change the design of the rocket, source its components from vendors of its choice, market it and launch it. He added that the SSLV technology transfer marks a pivotal moment in India’s space sector, as this is one of the first instances of a space agency transferring entire rocket technology to a company.Asked about who/which entity will absorb the liability in case of a rocket catastrophe, Goenka mentioned that the launching nation bears the responsibility, affirming that it rests with the Government of India. He added that the Government of India would decide how much liability would be borne by itself, and how much would be borne by the owner of the rocket. Referring to the instance of a private firm Skyroot launching a small rocket, Goenka said that the launching firm was asked to take a launch liability insurance.Indian firms L&T and HAL have also undertaken a contract to build and launch 5 PSLV rockets, that originally belong to ISRO. According to officials, the first such industry-built PSLV rocket, designated at "PSLV N1" is to be launched towards the end of 2025.

Officials said HAL's bid was for Rs.511cr (approx $59mn), and this sum would be paid in a phased manner. Radhakrishnan Durairaj, CMD, NSIL, said, "We are pleased to be part of this SSLV technology transfer process that would enable HAL to develop this launch vehicle that would cater to launch on-demand needs of global small satellite customer needs. This collaboration marks a significant step towards strengthening India’s commercial satellite launch capabilities and more specifically in enabling Indian industry in realising this SSLV.” Queried about the long delays in rolling out India's Tejas fighter jets and whether HAL's ability to deliver in the rocketry domain, top officials from HAL's Aerospace division outlined that the capability for space manufacturing is different from that of fighter planes. They added that a different manufacturing capacity exists for the space programme and for the fighter jet programme. Dr. Pawan Goenka, Chairman, IN-SPACE, said, after the first to HAL-made SSLV launches supported by ISRO, HAL is free to change the design of the rocket, source its components from vendors of its choice, market it and launch it. He added that the SSLV technology transfer marks a pivotal moment in India’s space sector, as this is one of the first instances of a space agency transferring entire rocket technology to a company. Asked about who/which entity will absorb the liability in case of a rocket catastrophe, Goenka mentioned that the launching nation bears the responsibility, affirming that it rests with the Government of India. He added that the Government of India would decide how much liability would be borne by itself, and how much would be borne by the owner of the rocket. Referring to the instance of a private firm Skyroot launching a small rocket, Goenka said that the launching firm was asked to take a launch liability insurance. Indian firms L&T and HAL have also undertaken a contract to build and launch 5 PSLV rockets, that originally belong to ISRO. According to officials, the first such industry-built PSLV rocket, designated at "PSLV N1" is to be launched towards the end of 2025.

ISRO sources rocket components from Indian and foreign vendors, assembles the rocket and launches it. Henceforth, HAL will follow the same process for the SSLV.

Indian government firm HAL to own, build and launch ISRO's SSLV rocket

Earth, the pale blue dot, as seen by Voyager 1 on 14 February 1990, wasn't always blue. Studies suggest that the earliest colour exuded by the oceans was purple, and even pink. This was between 3.5 and 2.4 billion years ago during the Archean eon. The theory was first proposed by Indian-American molecular biologist Shiladitya DasSarma, and has been termed the "Purple Earth Hypothesis." DasSarma theorised that early life on the planet did not work with chlorophyll but a molecule called retinal. It absorbed green and yellow light and reflected red and blue, which gave Earth the appearance of a purple planet. Some even say that the Earth's earliest colour was pink.Retinal is still present around us and can be found in the plum-colored membrane of a photosynthetic microbe called halobacteria. This bacterium absorbs green light and reflects back red and violet light, so you see purple. DasSarma says that primitive microbes that used retinal to harness the sun's energy dominated early Earth. So things on Earth at the time appeared purple. There were microbes that used chlorophyll but could not compete directly with those utilising retinal, DasSarma said. But they evolved the ability to absorb the wavelengths retinal did not use, helping them survive. Also Read: Scientists discover something unexpected moving 2,700km under Earth's surface "Chlorophyll was forced to make use of the blue and red light, since all the green light was absorbed by the purple membrane-containing organisms," William Sparks, an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Maryland, said. This pigment in the cyanobacteria living in the oceans gave the water a pinkish hue, making the "blue dot" a pink planet.
