The White House fears that China's "growing aggressiveness" in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea may soon lead to casualties. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby noted the "unsafe" and "unprofessional" intercepts by China in recent days, and issued the warning.&nbsp;

"It won't be long before somebody gets hurt," the White House spokesperson told reporters. "That's the concern with these unsafe and unprofessional intercepts."

Kirby added that Washington&nbsp;would continue to stand up for the freedom of navigation in the air and sea.

"I sure would like to hear Beijing justify what they're doing," Kirby said. "Air and maritime intercepts happen all the time. Heck, we do it. The difference is...when we feel like we need to do it, it's done professionally."

The US Navy on Sunday released a video titled "Unsafe interaction" in the Taiwan Strait. The video showed a Chinese warship crossing in front of a US destroyer.&nbsp;

The US military alleged that the Chinese Navy knowingly carried out “unsafe manoeuvres” near the destroyer transiting the sensitive Taiwan Strait.&nbsp;

Previously, the two nations locked horns when a Chinese plane “flew directly in front of and within 400 feet of the nose of the RC-135, forcing the US aircraft to fly through its wake turbulence".&nbsp;

In a declassified video footage, a fighter plane could be seen crossing in front of the American aircraft which appears to be shaking due to the resulting turbulence.

White House warns someone may get 'hurt' by Chinese military's 'aggressiveness'

A research team in China has claimed to have significantly enhanced the safety of the world’s most potent explosive by designing a five-fold boost to its shock resistance capacity, according to a report by the South China Morning Post.

As per the scientists, this innovation could lead to the acceleration of large-scale application of the explosive in wars which could further make the Chinese weapons far superior in terms of destructive power.

Deemed to be the most lethal non-nuclear explosive in existence, CL-20 when blasted, can beget fierce shock waves with exploding pressures that are many times higher than other common explosives like TNT and RDX.

Recently, Chinese defence researchers, with the help of 24 hypersonic projectiles, sank an entire US aircraft carrier cavalcade in the South China Sea.

According to military experts, the weapons used by China had CL-20 warheads.

According to a US Energetics Technology Centre study commissioned by the Pentagon in 2021, the mass production of CL-20 is extremely difficult but China is the only country to so far possess such industrial capability.

The study also claims that China has used the explosive in some of its newest weapons.

But the use of CL-20 is still restricted due to its sensitivity to shock, the SCMP report cited explosive scientist Guo Changping from the Sichuan Military and Civilian Co-Innovation Centre for New Energetic Materials as saying.

“CL-20 has a high mechanical sensitivity, which makes it prone to safety accidents during its development, production, storage, transport and use, due to friction and impact. Its safety performance needs to be improved,” Guo’s team said in a peer-reviewed paper published in the Chinese Journal of Explosives and Propellants in April.

“We are seeking a new method to break through the current technology barriers. It will inspire the design and preparation of high-security, high-energy propellants and explosive formulas of the future,” the scientists added.

<h2>China's CL-20 research closely linked to nuclear weapons programme</h2>

According to some state media reports in recent years, China’s CL-20 research is closely linked to its nuclear weapons programme.

More potent detonative devices&nbsp;can lower the size of nuclear weapons and allow intercontinental ballistic projectiles to travel further.

Explosive expert Professor Yu Yongzhong, who engineered ignitable devices for China’s nuclear warheads, conceived the idea of utilising cage-shaped compounds as the new method of researching high-energy explosives.

He suggested changing the “two-dimensional” flat ring structure of detonation devices to a “three-dimensional” cage-like structure.

This led to the synthesis of 797#, which is the world's first cage structure explosive material in 1979.

According to some experts in the US defence industry, China has already integrated CL-20 into a number of weapons systems and has invested research resources for the mass production of the most deadly non-nuclear explosive in factories.

China has significantly enhanced safety of the world's most powerful explosive: Report

Poking the dragon in the eye is never an intelligent thing to do. But this week, backed by the United States' ironclad guarantee for security, the Philippines began to assert its sovereignty in the South China Sea by placing buoys in the waters. It claims to be its own. Not only this, on the 17th May, the Philippine military chief also visited the remote islands near the disputed separately archipelago insisting that it was important for the Philippines to monitor and detect who had access to the waters in the territory. The United States claims it is expanding its military foot print in the Philippines to better defend Taiwan in case of a conflict. But by doing what it has done has Washington pushed the Philippines to the forefront of a firing range as and when hostilities break out with China in the region? Mohammed Saleh gets you the details.

Is United States provoking China by using Philippines?

Two shipwrecks in the South China Sea, dating back to 500 years and filled with stacked timber and Ming-era porcelain, are providing&nbsp;significant clues about the maritime Silk Road trade routes,&nbsp;Chinese archaeologists say.&nbsp;

The two shipwrecks were found by officials in October, and cultural and archaeological authorities have now started deep-sea exploration and excavation which will take at least a year, announced officials.&nbsp;

Two vessels were discovered by marine researchers in the South China Sea's northwest region, around 1,500 metres below sea level.&nbsp;

The officials stated that the shipwrecks were “relatively well preserved, with a large number of cultural relics”.

Experts stated that one wreck belonged to the Hongzhi period of the Ming dynasty, which lasted from 1488 until 1505. &nbsp;The ship was carrying some pottery and a cargo of stacked persimmon timber logs.

The other wreck has been estimated to date back to the Zhengde period of 1506 to 1521. The ship was filled with more than 100,000 pieces of porcelain crockery.&nbsp;

In the photographs, piles of plates, stacked bowls and jars with intricate designs were visible underneath the sand and mud.

The archaeologists stated that both the ancient ships were moving in different directions, and the wrecks were discovered less than 20km (12 miles) apart. They said that it was the first time ships which were returning and arriving have been discovered close to each other, which indicates that they were sailing on an important trade route.

“It helps us study the maritime Silk Road’s reciprocal flow,” said Tang Wei, the director of the Chinese National Centre for Archaeology.&nbsp;

The exact location of the shipwrecks remains undisclosed, however, the officials stated that the markers were established on the site.

In recent years, Chinese archaeological exploration has gone further into deeper waters, after a deep-water archaeology laboratory was established by the National Centre for Archaeology and the Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering in 2018.&nbsp;

The officials stated that the researchers went underwater on Saturday through the submersible Shenhai Yongshi, or Deep Sea Warrior, which has the capacity to carry people to a depth of 5,000 metres.

500-year-old shipwreck reveals details about historic Silk Road trade routes

To tighten its sovereignty claim over the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea amid the rising threat of China in the region, the Philippines has placed five navigational buoys within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ), reported Reuters.

As per the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), which is tasked to oversee the enforcement of laws within Philippine waters, as many as five buoys carrying the national flag of the country were set up in five key areas.&nbsp;

The buoys are placed within a 200-mile (322-km) zone. It encompasses Whitsun Reef. In March 2021, an incident in the Whitsun Reef sparked tensions between the Philippines and China. This occurred when hundreds of Chinese vessels entered the reef, which is a part of the Spratly Islands.&nbsp;

In show of power over disputed Spratly islands, Philippines sets up buoys in South China Sea

Chinese boats and maritime militia reportedly tracked the drills carried out by the navies of India and ASEAN countries in the South China Sea, two Indian sources told news agency Reuters on Monday.&nbsp;

The report mentioned that an independent expert in Vietnam said that Beijing appeared to be using the militia to intimidate. They apparently wanted to disrupt the naval exercise, which concluded on&nbsp;Monday.&nbsp;

The naval ships and aircraft from India, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Brunei took part in the two-day sea phase of the ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise (AIME 2023).&nbsp;

The Indian sources said that the Chinese militia was in the Vietnamese Exclusive Economic Zone and the naval vessels even crossed each other, but they didn't engage.&nbsp;

A government official said on the condition of anonymity that several Chinese ships were monitored by India in the region where military drills were being conducted.&nbsp;

The sources added that a Chinese research vessel was also following these boats towards the same area when the Indian authorities were tracking the movements of at least five militia boats.&nbsp;

An expert on the matter, Ray Powell, who leads Project Myoushu on the South China Sea at Stanford University, said the boats belong to the Qiong Sansha Yu militia fleet in the area.&nbsp;

Chinese boats and maritime militia reportedly tracked the drills carried out by the navies of India and ASEAN countries in the South China Sea, two Indian sources told news agency Reuters on Monday. The report mentioned that an independent expert in Vietnam said that Beijing appeared to be using the militia to intimidate. They apparently wanted to disrupt the naval exercise, which concluded on Monday. The naval ships and aircraft from India, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Brunei took part in the two-day sea phase of the ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise (AIME 2023). The Indian sources said that the Chinese militia was in the Vietnamese Exclusive Economic Zone and the naval vessels even crossed each other, but they didn't engage. A government official said on the condition of anonymity that several Chinese ships were monitored by India in the region where military drills were being conducted. The sources added that a Chinese research vessel was also following these boats towards the same area when the Indian authorities were tracking the movements of at least five militia boats. An expert on the matter, Ray Powell, who leads Project Myoushu on the South China Sea at Stanford University, said the boats belong to the Qiong Sansha Yu militia fleet in the area. 1/Yesterday a flotilla of #China maritime militia ships moving SE executed an unusual 90deg turn, spread out & began moving SW—on a course that would intriguingly lead them directly into the #ASEAN-#India Maritime Exercise group headed NE from Singapore. ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise AIME 2023 involved a total of nine ships and six aircraft, In addition to that, more than 1,800 personnel took part from across the bloc's member states. As mentioned by the SCMP report, the Chinese ships were seen about 100 nautical miles away from the area where the exercises were taking place and did not belong to the country’s navy, said the Indian official, who asked not to be identified citing the sensitivity of the issue. India and Singapore, which co-hosted the final day of the weeklong exercise, didn't respond to the reports of Chinese spooning. And China's Ministry of Defence also didn't immediately respond. The Republic of Singapore Navy wrote in a Facebook post on Monday that "AIME was successfully and safely completed with the conclusion of the sea phase in international waters earlier this morning". The navy added, "RSS Supreme will continue in transit to the Philippines and prepare for the upcoming Asean Multilateral Naval Exercise." Indian Navy said that INS Delhi and INS Satpura have successfully participated in various activities during the harbour phase of the AIME 2023. Did China stalk ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise in South China Sea to 'intimidate'?

China is snooping around the South China Sea. Boats suspected to be belonging to Chinese maritime militia reportedly approached the South China Sea. They reached an area where the navies of India and ASEAN countries were taking part in the drills. According to a report, Beijing appeared to be using the militia to intimidate.

Why did China try to interrupt ASEAN-India maritime exercise in the South China Sea?

Indian Navy ships are heading to the South China Sea. India is taking part in the inaugural edition of the ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise (AIME) on 2 May. It will expand military cooperation between India & the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). For the first time, India is getting involved in exercises with ASEAN Organisation. AIME-2023 will consist of wargames which are going to take place in the South China Sea.

Why are Indian Navy warships heading to the South China Sea?

In the Indo-Pacific region, the great competition between the United States and China is only intensifying especially after a Chinese coast guard ship blocked a Philippine patrol vessel in the South China sea. The Unites States has now warned that any attack on the Philippine vessel would trigger a US response.

He further explained that his meeting with his US counterpart held extreme significance in forging ahead his country's national interest and strengthening the 'very important alliance' between Manila and Washington.

President Marcos' official visit to Washington is the first trip by a Philippine leader in more than a decade and the newest in a series of high-level meetings carried out by the Philippines with leaders of the United States and China.

As per a Reuters report, a senior Biden administration official said that both leaders are expected to reach agreements on greater business engagement, as well as 'military enhancements' amidst shared concerns about China.

The official further said that the strategic importance of the Philippines could not be underestimated, highlighting the fact that the relationship the United States had with the Philippines was beyond just security. &nbsp;He said that in an aim to bolster commercial ties, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo would lead a presidential business delegation to the Philippines.

"We're seeking not to be provocative, but to provide both moral and practical support for the Philippines as they try to make their way in a complex Western Pacific," the official said. "Their geographic position is critical," he added.

Philippine president travels to United States to forge stronger ties amid tensions with China

Amid talks with China, the Philippines’ top diplomat raised his concerns over escalating tensions in waters around Taiwan, on Saturday (April 22). The statement was issued by Manila’s foreign ministry after the talks between Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang and Philippine foreign secretary Enrique Manalo as the two countries have sought to deepen economic ties while also managing their dispute in the South China Sea.&nbsp;

This comes after the Chinese foreign minister while addressing a forum in Shanghai on Friday said that recent rhetoric about Beijing disrupting peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait could have dangerous consequences, adding that such claims are “against basic common sense on international relations and historical justice.”

“The logic is absurd and the consequences dangerous,” said Qin, in Shanghai. Notably, China claims Taiwan as its territory and vowed to bring the island under its control someday by force if necessary.

Philippines raises concerns over 'escalating tensions' in Taiwan Strait amid talks with China

United States and Philippines anti-tank missile exercises are presently underway in the South China Sea. The operation which is part of a two-week annual bilateral war games follows China's three-days of drills around Taiwan.

US-Philippines exercise in South China sea; China irked by America's growing presence in sea

China on Monday (April 10) slammed the United States for the "illegal" intrusion of a warship into waters Beijing claims in the South China Sea. The US earlier said that in a "freedom of navigation" operation, its guided-missile destroyer the USS Milius sailed through waters claimed by Beijing.&nbsp;

The US warship apparently sailed near one of the most important man-made and Chinese-controlled islands. The statement revealed that the ship sailed within 12 nautical miles of Mischief Reef, which is about 1,400 kilometres from the southern tip of Taiwan's mainland.&nbsp;

A statement by the Navy noted that the operation "upheld the rights, freedoms, and lawful uses of the sea". The US Navy's 7th Fleet said in a statement: "Under customary international law ... features like Mischief Reef that is submerged at high tide in their naturally formed state are not entitled to a territorial sea."&nbsp;

It added, "The land reclamation efforts, installations, and structures built on Mischief Reef do not change this characterisation under international law."&nbsp;

Meanwhile, China's People's Liberation Army said that the US warship had "illegally" entered waters near the reef without Chinese approval/ China also said that the vessel was monitored by the forces and a warning was also issued.&nbsp;

The so-called intrusion occurred at a time when Chinese fighter jets and warships are carrying out military drills around Taiwan, which escalated the tensions. China has also practised simulated strikes on the island.&nbsp;

The military drills come in the background of a headliner meeting last week between Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy outside Los Angeles.&nbsp;

Beijing slams US over 'illegal' intrusion of American warship in South China Sea

Malayasian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Monday (April 3) that the country was ready to negotiate with China over maritime dispute in the South China Sea. His comments came after a report by a think tank that Chinese boats were patrolling close to Malaysian offshore gas project.

The issue was raised between Anwar and Chinese President Xi Jinping in China last week as Malaysia has energy exploration projects in the area, Anwar said at an address on Monday at the prime minister's department.

Anwar did not specify which dispute or which area of the South China Sea.

"In that area there is a similar claim from China. I said (to them) that as a small country that needs oil and gas resources, we have to continue. But if the condition is that there must be negotiation, then we are ready to negotiate," Anwar said, without elaborating.

China claims almost entirety of South China Sea citing ancient facts. In doing so, it has waded into dispute into other countries who have coastlines on South China Sea. About USD 3 trillions worth of ship-borne trade passes through South China Sea annually
&nbsp;
China claims about 90% of the South China Sea via a U-shaped "nine-dash line" on its maps that cuts through the exclusive economic zones (EEZ) of five Southeast Asian countries.

An international arbitration ruled in 2016 that the line was invalid. But Beijing does not recognise the ruling.

Malaysian state oil company Petronas operates oil and gas fields in the South China Sea within Malaysia's EEZ and has in recent years had several encounters with Chinese vessels.

Those include a month-long standoff between a Chinese survey ship and an oil exploration vessel contracted by Petronas in 2020, which China had said was conducting normal activities.

The U.S. think tank, the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI), in a report last week said a Chinese coast guard vessel was for the past month operating near Petronas' Kasawari gas development off Malaysia's Sarawak state, and came as close as 1.5 miles of the project. A Malaysian navy ship was in the area at the same time, AMTI said.

US rejects China's claims that American warship illegally entered waters in South China Sea

China’s military says it tracked and warned away a United States warship that had illegally entered waters it claims in the South China Sea. The US Navy denied China’s claims, stating that the ship was on a routine operation and left the area of its own accord.

Terrorism, Myanmar, Ukraine and the South China Sea figured prominently in the Quad meeting of foreign ministers of host India, Australia, Japan and the United States that took place in New Delhi on Friday morning. &nbsp;

The foreign ministers were meeting on the sidelines of the&nbsp;G-20 Finance Ministers’ meeting in southern Bengaluru city, which is also being hosted by India. In the communiqué, the Quad members sharpened their focus on Ukraine but avoided mentioning Russia.

On Ukraine

The statement said that the Quad countries underscored&nbsp;the need for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine in accordance with international law, including the UN Charter.

“We continued to discuss our responses to the conflict in Ukraine and the immense human suffering it is causing and concurred that the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible. We emphasised that the rules-based international order must respect sovereignty, territorial integrity, transparency and peaceful resolution of disputes,” the communique read.

On China

The Quad members expressed concern over the militarisation of waters around China in the backdrop of a flare-up in tensions between Washington and Beijing.

In a joint statement, the group called for "the importance of adherence to international law" in the East and South China Seas "to meet challenges to the maritime rules-based order".

The statement did not explicitly name China, which has repeatedly accused the United States of spearheading the Quad to encircle the rising Asian power.

"We strongly oppose any unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo or increase tensions in the area," it said.

The Philippine government has lodged a diplomatic protest, calling on China to ensure its vessels cease “aggressive activities” after the Chinese coastguard used a “military-grade laser” to try to block one of its ships in the South China Sea.

Philippines files protest over China’s laser use in sea dispute

The Philippines on Monday (February 13) accused a Chinese coast guard ship of using a “military-grade laser” to hinder its resupply mission and urged Beijing to refrain from committing any “provocative act” endangering the lives of people. According to the Philippine coast guard (PCG), their vessel was assisting a navy mission to resupply its troops in the South China Sea, on February 6, when the Chinese coast guard ship emitted a green laser light which temporarily blinded its crew on the bridge.&nbsp;

“I think it’s time for the Chinese government to restrain its forces so that it does not commit any provocative act that will endanger the lives of people”, said Philippine military spokesperson Medel Aguilar to reporters. Subsequently, quoting the military chief Aguilar also called China’s action “offensive”.&nbsp;

In a statement, the PCG also said that the Chinese ship manoeuvred dangerously close, about 137 metres, in a bid to block the Philippine patrol vessel BRP Malapascua from approaching Second Thomas Shoal, where the incident occurred. The Second Thomas Shoal is some 195 km off the coast of the Philippine province of Palawan which has been occupied by a small Philippine military contingent.&nbsp;

“The deliberate blocking of the Philippine government ships to deliver food and supplies to our military personnel on board the BRP Sierra Madre is a blatant disregard for, and a clear violation of, Philippine sovereign rights in this part of the West Philippine Sea,”, the statement added. A video released by the Philippine authorities shows a Chinese&nbsp;coast guard ship hindering the path&nbsp;of a Philippine vessel from a distance and subsequently emitting a green laser.&nbsp;

On the other hand, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said that the Philippine coast guard vessel trespassed into Chinese waters without permission, on February 6. He also went on to, in turn, urge the Philippines to “avoid such actions” and that their staff’s actions were “professional and restrained” as well as in accordance with Beijing and international law.&nbsp;

He added, “We hope the Philippines will earnestly respect China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea and avoid any actions that may lead to the expansion of the dispute and complication of the situation”.&nbsp;

Philippines accuses China of using ‘military-grade laser’ to hinder resupply mission in South China Sea

Just when relations between China and the US are strained because of the suspected Chinese spy balloon in US, the US Navy and Marine Corps are holding joint exercises in the South China Sea. According to 7th Fleet based in Japan, the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier strike group and 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit have been carrying out "integrated expeditionary strike force operations" in the South China Sea.

The fleet said that the exercise involves ships, ground forces and aircraft. It gave no details as to when they began and whether they had ended, but that the exercise took place on Saturday.

China claims almost the entirety of the South China Sea based on ancient claims and the so-called 'nine-dash line'. These claims are contested by countries in the region. US, while not having an official position on Chinese sovereignty in the South China Sea, has carried out a number of freedom of navigation and military exercises in the past.&nbsp;

US has also begun strengthening its alliance with countries in the region who are at odds with China over claims in the South China Sea. The Philippines has been on the receiving end of encroachment by Chinese coast guard and nominally civilian but government-backed fleets.

US holds exercises in South China Sea amid tensions with China

At their annual retreat on Saturday (February 4) in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, the foreign ministers of Southeast Asia agreed to conclude discussions with China about a proposed agreement aimed at averting conflicts&nbsp;in the disputed South China Sea.&nbsp;In the concluding session of their two-day meeting, the ASEAN ministers also decided to coordinate their efforts to put into effect a five-point agreement that Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, the head of the military in Myanmar, and ASEAN leaders signed in 2021 to stop the country's escalating conflict.

A "code of conduct", a collection of regional conventions and regulations aimed at averting conflict, has been the subject of intermittent discussions between China and the ASEAN member nations for years. These governments include four opposing claimants to territory in the South China Sea.

The proposed deal is the subject of ongoing negotiations, the first of which will take place in March, according to Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi. As this year's ASEAN chair, Indonesia is prepared to host further rounds of these talks. She stated that the ASEAN participants are dedicated to wrapping up the talks "as soon as possible."

“Members are also committed to promote the implementation of a declaration of conduct,” Marsudi added.

Marsudi did not go into any detail, but China has already charged Washington of interfering in what it refers to be an Asian crisis. To encourage the freedom of overflight and navigation, the U.S. has sent ships and planes out to sea. It has frequently expressed concern about China's provocative activities, such as the building of islands on which it has stationed armaments such as surface-to-air missiles.

The ASEAN member nations will advance discussions this year and consider new strategies, Sidharto Suryodipuro, director of ASEAN Cooperation at the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, told reporters in Jakarta.

A Chinese military aircraft came in close proximity with the US jet over the South China Sea last week and forced the American jet to make unsafe evasive manoeuvres to avoid a collision, the US military said.

The incident is said to have taken place on December 21, when a Chinese Navy J-11 fighter jet came within 3 meters of US RC-135 aircraft, a US Air Force reconnaissance plane with about 30 people on board, the Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement on Thursday.

"We expect all countries in the Indo-Pacific region to use international airspace safely and in accordance with international law," it added.

The Indo-Pacific command is responsible for overseeing US military operations in the contested South China Sea region.

The US military claimed that the Chinese jet performed an “unsafe manoeuvre”, forcing the US jet to take evasive measures to avoid it. It also shared a video of the Chinese jet being in close proximity to the US recon aircraft.&nbsp;

"Any encroachment in the West Philippine Sea or reclamation on the features therein is a threat to the security of Pagasa Island," the Philippine defence department said on Thursday.

Philippine government refers to waters immediately west to the country as West Philippine Sea. Is also refers to Pagasa Island as Thitu Island. It is the second biggest island in the archipelago.

The defence department said it had directed the armed forces "to strengthen the country's presence in the West Philippine Sea, following the monitored Chinese activities close to Pagasa Island".

The agency did not specify the nature of the "monitored Chinese activities", but the Philippine military said its air and naval patrols had observed "China militia vessels" in these areas.

In recent years, China has been building artificial islands on reefs. It has also constructed military facilities and airstrips. China has ignored a 2012 ruling from a UN-backed tribunal that its claims in South China Sea is without basis.
