Texas woman caught in intense tussle between a hawk and snake, gets injured

A Florida duo, popularly known as the "Glades Boys", successfully captured the longest-ever recorded Burmese python in the state, which measured 19 feet long and weighed 125 pounds. A local environmental conservancy verified the record catch of the invasive species.

The snake was found by 22-year-old Jake Waleri in Big Cypress National Preserve at around 1 am on July 10. In the video, the man was seen pulling the python out from roadside grass and wrestling with it as the vicious reptile made several attempts to bite him.

'Giant is an understatement'

As recommended by wildlife officials, the snake was later killed. "Giant is an understatement for this beast," wrote Waleri and his partner in catching snakes Stephen Gauta on Instagram. "She clocked in at 579 cm/ 19 feet flat and 125 lbs. Even just being able to see a snake this large would be a dream,” they added.

As per National Geographic, deer can pursue flesh because they face a lack of minerals like calcium, salt and phosphorous, especially in the winter season when the life of plants is scarce.

Watch | Deer captured munching on a snake, video goes viral

A deadly cobra was found slithering in a plane's cockpit by South African pilot Rudolph Erasmus at 11,000ft in the air.

The scary co-passenger was slithering under the pilot's seat. "To be truly honest, it's as if my brain did not register what was going on. It was a moment of [...] awe," Erasmus said, adding that he initially mistook the cold feeling on his back as his water bottle.

"I felt this cool sensation, sort of, crawling up my shirt," he stated, believing that he did not close the bottle properly and hence, the water is dripping down his back.

"As I turned to the left and looked down I saw the cobra [...] receding its head backwards underneath the seat,” he said.

The pilot had to make an emergency landing. The flight had departed from Bloemfontein and was destined for Pretoria. The private plane, Beechcraft Baron 58, had four passengers onboard along with the snake.

Erasmus said that Cape cobra's single bite is lethal and can lead to the victim's death in 30 minutes, hence to avoid any panic, he carefully thought before telling passengers calmly about the unwanted co-passenger on board.

Erasmus was also "so scared the snake might have gone to the back and cause mass panic". Thinking thoroughly, he decided to inform the passengers.

"I did inform the passengers: 'Listen the snake is inside the aircraft, it's underneath my seat, so let's try and get down to the ground as soon as we can',” he said to the passengers.

Describing about the scary announcement made to the passengers, Erasmus said that there was an absolute moment of silence: "You could hear a needle drop and I think everyone froze for a moment or two,” he said.

Pilots receive training for dealing with various scenarios, but certainly not for handling snakes in the cockpit, Erasmus said, adding that panicking would have made the situation much worse.

The plane's emergency landing was made in the city of Welkom. The presence of a snake, however, was not a total surprise. Two employees working at Worcester flying club, from where the plane first took off, said that they had seen the reptile enter the aircraft and had tried to "grab" it, but in vain.

Erasmus said that he had also tried finding the snake before boarding the aircraft along with the passengers, but "unfortunately it was not there, so we all then safely assumed that it must have crawled out overnight or earlier that morning, which was on Monday".

Snake scare! Pilot finds deadly cobra in cockpit, makes emergency landing

Contrary to popular belief, snakes are a far bigger concern in Bangkok. Just ask the 199 emergency hotline operator that receives a call for assistance every 15 minutes on average, and 60,000 snakes are removed annually.

The data was made public in reaction to a Bangkok resident's online posting of a picture of a sizable boa constrictor (non-venomous species of snake) hanging from a tree in the Din Daeng district, which sparked an outpouring of support from residents of the area and beyond.

Around 200 calls are made each day in Bangkok, according to rescuers at the emergency hotline asking for help with pests, including snakes, water monitors, and wasps. The operators say that nearly half of the calls are about snakes, reported Bangkok Post.

“On average, a report is made every 15 minutes throughout every 24-hour period,” said an operator.

Report: Bangkok citizens report one snake encounter every 15 minutes

After being bitten by a timber rattler, William H. "Marty" Martin, a renowned snake researcher, who had been making important findings about the species since childhood, passed away.

According to his wife Renee Martin, William H. "Marty" Martin passed away on August 3 after being bitten by a pet snake on their farm in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

Joe Villari, who oversees the Bull Run Mountains Preserve in northern Virginia and would accompany Martin on his expeditions there, said Martin, who was 80 years old, continued to make strenuous mountain hikes to record and count snake populations in isolated locations.

“He was in his 80s, and he was hard to keep up with,” said Villari, who made it a point to join Martin on his semiannual treks to remote mountain dens where the snakes would live.

Martin was perhaps the foremost expert on timber rattlers, a species that John Sealy, a rattlesnake researcher from Stokesdale, North Carolina, who has known Martin for more than 30 years, studied since he was a young boy.

When he was a little boy, Martin discovered a previously undiscovered population of timber rattlers in the Bull Run Mountains. He then persuaded a herpetologist to visit the area and confirm the discovery.

According to Sealy, Martin is well-known among snake experts for his fieldwork, research, and aptitude for finding and documenting elusive species.

“They’re extremely secretive animals,” he said.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that there are only about five snakebites-related deaths in the United States per year.

A second snakebite can be more dangerous than a first one for some people, according to Dan Keyler, a toxicology professor at the University of Minnesota and a specialist on snakebites.

Rattlesnakes can also be more dangerous if they get big enough to inject more venom. A person's susceptibility may also depend on their age.

In his professional life, Martin had previously been bitten but survived.

(With inputs from agencies)

A flight attendant from an airline with operations in Turkey was recently startled after purportedly finding a severed snake's head in a meal. According to the Independent, which cited the aviation blog One Mile at a Time, the disturbing incident occurred on a SunExpress aircraft on July 21 between Ankara, Turkey, and Dusseldorf, Germany. A member of the cabin staff reported that as they were having their crew lunch, they discovered a little snake's head hidden among the potatoes and veggies. The head of the reptile is shown in a video posted on Twitter laying in the centre of the meal tray.

Researchers in Japan have developed an advanced snake-shaped robot that can climb ladders and wind its way up drainpipes, raising hopes that such devices will soon be used in surveying inaccessible locations in disaster-hit areas. The new robot, which is 2.5 meters long and weighs 6kg, can be used for the inspection of collapsed buildings, according to Fumitoshi Matsuno, the robotics professor at Kyoto University leading the project. His team aims to put the device into practical use within two to three years, as reported by Nikkei Japan.

The snake, which is now patented technology, has been developed by UKAEA's RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments) in a GPB2.7 million (USD3.4 million), a seven-year project. The snake will be delivered as part of EUROfusion's DEMO programme, which will be the successor to the ITER fusion device which is currently being built in southern France, as reported by World Nuclear News (WNN).

Shoppers in a Sydney supermarket were in for a shocking surprise when they were greeted by a three-metre-long python at a shelf in the spice section. The spokesperson for the supermarket, Woolworths said, “It was a slippery and rare customer.” In a Facebook post, shopper Hilary Leigh wrote “Only in Australia!” while sharing a video of the large snake at the Glenorie supermarket in Sydney’s north-west. Another shopper Helaina Alati, who was browsing spices for dinner, was surprised to see the diamond python when she turned her head to the right and he was just 20cm from her face. She told Guardian Australia, “It just wanted to say hello.” It was initially curled up behind the spices. She added, “Dozens of people must have walked past it. It’s lucky I was the one it popped out to. Most people would have freaked out. It was chill, and not aggressive at all.” The supermarket spokesperson said, after the reptile was sighted, Woolworths staff “reacted quickly and calmly” to cordon off the area for customer safety. The Australian Museum says diamond pythons are found in bushland areas and the national parks of Sydney, but often go undetected because of their nocturnal and slow-moving habits.

The arrival of European colonists led to a mass extinction of between 50 to 70 per cent of the snake and lizard populations of the Guadeloupe Islands, according to a large fossil study published on Wednesday.

The paper, which appeared in the journal Science Advances, highlights human impacts on animals that are often seen as less "charismatic" and therefore neglected in scientific study, its authors wrote.

Corentin Bochaton of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique said that he and his colleagues studied 43,000 reptile bone remains from the Caribbean archipelago's six islands.

"What we found is that we have massive biodiversity in the past record, with several species we were unaware were present there in the past, and also several species that were never described before," lead author Bochaton said.

The team analyzed the remains of 16 taxa, or animal groups across 31 sites from Guadeloupe, which is a part of France.

These were sorted into four periods: the Late Pleistocene (32,000 to 11,650 years ago), the Holocene before the arrival of humans (starting 11,650 years ago), the Indigenous habitation period, and the modern period.

By carbon dating the remains and their surrounding sediment, they were able to reconstruct the region's evolutionary history, and found that the mass extinction occurred over only the last 500 years.

The islands could have been first inhabited by humans as far back as 5,000 years ago. Columbus arrived in Guadeloupe in 1493, while French colonisation started in 1635 and led to the disappearance of Guadeloupe's indigenous people within 20 years.

"We observed no extinction in the Amerindian time," said Bochaton.

The fossil record also showed reptile species were able to survive the climate transition at the end of the last Ice Age when this region became warmer and wetter.

As to what led to the eradication of species such as the curlytail roquet and the Marie-Galante Boa, the authors believe the colonists' cats, mongeese, racoons and even rats were mostly to blame.

Smaller reptiles fared better than the larger ones, which could be indicative of the invasive predators' preferences.

Their data also revealed that tree-dwelling species were less impacted -- which Bochaton said might be down to the role of agriculture in the destruction of the ground-dwellers' habitats.

Bochaton said the work highlighted the importance of using fossil data to determine how humans impacted a region's biodiversity.
