Nikki Haley has formally requested Secret Service protection. Haley is the last Republican rival standing against former president Donald Trump and according to a report by local media she claims her presidential bid has resulted in threats although she does say that these threats are not going to stop her.

A driver was taken into custody after he crashed his vehicle into an exterior gate of the White House complex on Monday (Jan 8). The incident, confirmed by the Secret Service, transpired around 6 pm local time.

US Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi in a statement said, that although the driver was under custody, the cause and manner of the incident were still being investigated.

"Shortly before 6 pm, a vehicle collided with an exterior gate on the White House complex. We are investigating the cause & manner of the collision," said Guglielmi.

Notably, President Joe Biden was not in the White House at the time of the accident but it did cause traffic delays at 15th Street & Pennsylvania Avenue.

A little over an hour after the incident, the Washington DC Police Department cleared the suspect's vehicle while lifting the traffic closures, informed Guglielmi.

In recent years, the White House has been extensively fortified by making the fence taller. In 2021, the National Park Service constructed a 13-foot fence with wider, stronger posts to deter jumpers and other public members from climbing over it.

Driver crashes into White House gate, taken into custody by Secret Service

35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on 22nd November 1963 in Dallas, Texas. A former marine Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested in the case, but he was killed before trial. The Warren commission concluded that Oswald acted alone. Over the years, several conspiracy theorists have pointed at the presence of second shooter- one who is believed to have fired the fatal shot from a grassy knoll. A secret service agent who was on duty (and part of the Presidential motorcade) on the day of the tragedy, has opened up about his version of the truth. The story lends weight to the two-shooter theory. Vikram Chandra brings you a report.

John F. Kennedy Assassination: Ex-Secret Service agent tells his 'truth'

Who was behind John F. Kennedy's assassination?

The US Secret Service on Thursday (July 13) closed its investigation into the small bag of cocaine that was found at the White House as it couldn’t find any leads as to who brought it in the first place.

Despite combing scores of CCTV footage and interrogating many, the agency said it was unable to determine who was responsible for this act.

"There was no surveillance video footage found that provided investigative leads or any other means for investigators to identify who may have deposited the found substance in this area," the agency said in a lengthy statement.

"Without physical evidence, the investigation will not be able to single out a person of interest from the hundreds of individuals who passed through the vestibule where the cocaine was discovered. At this time, the Secret Service's investigation is closed due to a lack of physical evidence."

Combed through CCTV footage

The Secret Service said the packaging was "subjected to advanced fingerprint and DNA analysis," by the FBI crime lab.

The statement from the Secret Service came after congressional Republicans said they were informed in a classified briefing that the probe remained inconclusive due to lack of evidence.

"The investigation included a methodical review of security systems and protocols," the agency statement said. "

This review included a backwards examination that spanned several days prior to the discovery of the substance and developed an index of several hundred individuals who may have accessed the area where the substance was found. The focal point of these actions developed a pool of known persons for comparison of forensic evidence gleaned from the FBI's analysis of the substance's packaging.

"On July 12, the Secret Service received the FBI's laboratory results, which did not develop latent fingerprints and insufficient DNA was present for investigative comparisons," the statement said.

White House was confident of nabbing the suspect

According to CNN, the bag of cocaine was found on July 2 in a cubby near the ground floor entrance to the West Wing where staff-led tours of the White House pass through on their way into the building.

The White House was briefly shut down and the DC Fire Department was called to the scene when a powdery, cocaine-like substance was found inside a work area. It was later confirmed that the substance was cocaine.

Last week, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre exuded confidence that the Secret Service will “get to the bottom” of the incident.

Controversy theories erupt after cars used by Joe Biden and his Secret service in Nantucket catch fire

Hotels owned by Donald Trump charged the Secret Service more than $1.4 million over four years for the rooms used by the agents while protecting the former president and his family, documents released by the House Oversight Committee on Monday revealed.

The committee found that the Trump Organization charged $1,185 per night, which is five times more than the recommended government rate, despite the company earlier claiming that the security agents travelling with Trump would stay “for free” or “at cost.”

“The exorbitant rates charged to the Secret Service and agents’ frequent stays at Trump-owned properties raise significant concerns about the former President’s self-dealing and may have resulted in a taxpayer-funded windfall for former President Trump’s struggling businesses,” New York Democratic Rep. Carolyn Maloney, the panel’s chairwoman, wrote in a letter to the service’s director, reports CNN.

In one instance, the Secret Service was charged $1,160 for a room at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. for agents protecting Eric Trump on March 8, 2017. Whereas the government rate on that night was $242, the report said quoting a ledger obtained by the committee.

Another ledger shows that the Secret Service was made to pay $1,185 while protecting Donald Trump Jr on November 8, 2017. The government rate was $201.

The committee has asked the Secret Service to provide two more years of expenditures at Trump-owned properties, but has not yet received complete information on nightly rates, the report noted.

In light of these events, the panel has said that it is looking to bring a new legislation to prevent “presidential self-dealing and profiteering, as well as to curb conflicts of interest by ensuring that future presidents are prevented from exercising undue influence on Secret Service spending.”

Italy has for the first time appointed a woman, career diplomat Elisabetta Belloni, to head the country's secret service, Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced Wednesday.

Belloni, who has already been the first woman to hold key foreign ministry posts, will now lead Italy's Security Intelligence Department (DIS), reporting directly to the cabinet, said the statement.

The DIS's brief includes handling intelligence and security matters at home and abroad as well as counter-espionage and cybersecurity.

Belloni came to public prominence when she led the foreign ministry's crisis unit between 2004 and 2008, taking responsibility for operations involving Italians injured or killed abroad, whether in attacks or natural disasters.

She was the first woman to hold that position.

The unit also handled kidnappings, and one high-profile case she oversaw was the freeing of La Repubblica correspondent Daniele Mastrogiacomo who was abducted in Afghanistan.

She also coordinated the search for Italian survivors of the December 2004 tsunami in Thailand.

Born in Rome in 1958, Belloni first entered the foreign ministry in 1985 and took postings in Vienna and the Slovakian capital Bratislava.

The 62-year-old's most recent position was as secretary general of the foreign ministry, the highest position a career diplomat can hold there. There too, she was the first woman to occupy the post.

A few days after it was revealed that Trump’s children have been lavishly spending taxpayers' money on trips, a book has made another disturbing revelation about the family’s relationship with the Secret Service.

Carol Leonnig, in her book titled 'Zero Fail: The Rise and Fall of the Secret Service' has claimed that two Trump family members got “inappropriately — and perhaps dangerously – close” to agents protecting them.

The incident is alleged to have taken place while former US President Donald Trump was in the White House.

In her book, Leonnig claims that Secret Service agents have reported that Vanessa Trump, then-wife of Donald Trump Jr — former president’s oldest son — had "started dating one of the agents who had been assigned to her family". Vanessa had filed for an uncontested divorce from Trump Jr in March 2018.

However, the concerned agent did not face any disciplinary action as he or the agency were not the official guardians of Vanessa Trump.

Trump’s daughter, Tiffany Trump, was also spotted getting unusually close to an agent after she broke up with her then-boyfriend. As per the sources, Tiffany "began spending an unusual amount of time alone with a Secret Service agent on her detail".

Leonnig also reports that the Secret Service leaders "became concerned at how close Tiffany appeared to be getting to the tall, dark and handsome agent".

However, like the first case, the second agent in question was also not officially questioned and neither Tiffany nor the agent admitted to any such happening. The two further justified their alone time as ‘nature of the agent’s job’ claiming the agent is supposed to spend alone time with his charge. The agent, however, was later reassigned.

Another accusation made in the book is against Donald Trump himself. While it is not clear if the former president was aware of the alleged relationships between his family members and Secret Service agent, he did make sure no ‘short’ or ‘fat’ agents were assigned to protect his family.

"I want these fat guys off my detail," Trump has been quoted as saying. "How are they going to protect me and my family if they can’t run down the street?"

Trump family got 'inappropriately close' to Secret Service agent: Book

While the former US President, Donald Trump, left the White House on January 20, 2021, his children continued enjoying their privileges, which cost taxpayers.

Trump clan’s activities have cost taxpayers $140,000 in Secret Service security in the month Donald Trump left the White House.

Generally, family members of the outgoing presidents lose their security detail as soon as the president leaves the office. However, Donald Trump ensured his family’s safe future by issuing a directive to extend post-presidency protection by six months.

The security plan has been put in place for his four children and two of their spouses.

These costs, however, are excluding the cost for security at Trump properties in New Jersey, Palm Beach and Briarcliff, New York, revealed a watchdog group Citizens for Ethics. If the cost for trump properties is also included, the security cost would have been much higher, the group claimed.

As per the records of the watchdog group, Trump’s children have maintained a “breakneck speed of travel, and racked up significant hotel and transportation bills for the Secret Service”.

For transport alone, the Trump clan had spent $52,296.75 and at least $88,678.39 for hotel services while travelling.

Donald Trump’s daughter and son-in-law — Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner —went for a luxurious 10-day vacation to Utah immediately after finishing their jobs at the White House. The trip cost the secret service $62,599.

While Eric and Lara Trump spent the majority of their time at Trump’s Briarcliff property, their short trips to New York, Miami and Palm Beach, too, cost the service $12,742. Donald Trump Jr also made up a bill of $13,337 from his trips to New York.

If the clan keeps travelling in the same way, the total post-presidency cost could easily cross one million, which is the highest till now.

The group has also revealed that the Trump clan has gone on 12 times the amount of trips in three years that the Obamas made in seven.

“While it may be tempting to put the story of the Trump family’s profiteering in the past, we cannot until they have actually stopped directing taxpayer money into their own bank accounts,” the group said.

As per the rules, the former POTUS and FLOTUS are entitled to receive protection for their whole life and their youngest son, Barron, is entitled to these services till he turns 16. However, Trump nodded for security even for former treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin, former chief of staff Mark Meadows and former national security adviser Robert O’Brien, as reported by Washington Post.

Donald Trump's 'children' cost taxpayers $140,000 in a month

US Secret Service has been paying $3000 per month for an apartment near Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner's home in Washington to provide toilet and office facilities to agents protecting the couple. The Kushners have a sprawling 5000 square feet home in Washington with six bedrooms and seven bathrooms. But as per CNN report, agents protecting the couple do not enter the home.

CNN cited a source to say that it was not known why didn't the agents tasked with providing security to the couple use one bathroom in the home. It is not yet clear whether permission was denied.

The Secret Service has rented the apartment since 2017. This means that more than $100,000 has been paid till now.

White House spokesperson Judd Deere has been mentioned to have denied that Secret Service was refused permission to use facilities at Ivanka's house.

Deere said that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner had "utmost respect" for the secret agents protecting the couple.

He claimed that their house was always open to them. Secret Service reportedly denied a comment.

Secret Service pays $3000 to use toilet near Ivanka Trump's house: Report

US House Democrats have launched an investigation into Vice President Mike Pence's stay at a hotel owned by President Donald Trump during a visit to Ireland this week, two committees said on Friday.

Pence drew fire from Democrats when he stayed at the Trump International Golf Club in Doonbeg on the west coast of Ireland during his visit to the country, though it was 300 kilometres (180 miles) away from his meetings in the capital, Dublin.

Elijah Cummings, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, wrote to the White House, Trump Organisation, US Secret Service and the Vice President's Office seeking documents on the visit by September 19.

The letters cite media reports indicating the golf club had been a "problematic investment" for Trump's company and had not been profitable in years.

"The Committee does not believe that US taxpayer funds should be used to personally enrich President Trump, his family, and his companies," Cummings wrote, saying the stay could be a potential conflict of interest and violate the US Constitution.

Pence's chief of staff, Marc Short, told journalists that Trump had suggested Pence stay at the property, though Trump said later he had not been involved with the decision.

In a separate letter, the chairman of the US House Judiciary Committee, Jerrold Nadler, and the chairman of a Judiciary subcommittee, Steve Cohen, cited Pence's stay at Trump's Ireland golf club to press for documents for their own investigation into the White House's decision to host next year's Group of Seven economic summit at his resort in Florida.

Last month during the G7 meeting in France, Trump said his administration was considering hosting the summit at his Miami-area golf resort but insisted he would not personally profit from hosting the event.

Nadler and Cohen said in August they planned to investigate the proposal.

Trump has remained in control of his hotels, golf courses, and other businesses, though he said he handed over day-to-day operations to his sons before taking office in January 2017.

Watchdog groups and former government ethics officials say Trump has not put safeguards in place to make sure he does not directly profit from actions taken as president, as past presidents have done.

Gunman shoots himself outside White House

A 19-year-old British man has been charged for trying to grab a police officer's gun at a Donald Trump rally in Las Vegas in a bid to kill the Republican presidential nominee.

According to a complaint filed in federal court in Nevada, Michael Sandford tried to disarm the officer at Saturday's rally at the Mystere Theatre in the Treasure Island Casino before being overpowered.

It said that the young man told a Secret Service agent after his arrest that he had driven from California to Las Vegas "to kill Trump," and had been to a range a day earlier to learn to shoot as he had never fired a gun before.

"Sandford acknowledged that he would likely only be able to fire one to two rounds and stated he was convinced he would be killed by law enforcement during his attempt on Trump's life," the complaint said.

It added that Sandford told investigators he had purchased tickets for a rally in Phoenix, where he "would try again to kill Trump" in the event his plan in Las Vegas failed.

Video of his arrest carried by US media show a skinny man with short brown hair and a grey T-shirt being escorted out of the rally by police officers with his hands behind his back.

The prosecutor's office said Sandford was ordered held without bond, as he was considered dangerous and represented a flight risk.

Britain's Foreign Office is "providing assistance" in the case, a spokesman said.

'Would try this again'

The complaint said Sandford had told investigators that he had been in the United States for about 18 months, and had lived in Hoboken, New Jersey, before traveling to California.

Sandford told investigators that he had targeted officer Ameel Jacob's gun because it was in an unlocked position and would be the easiest way to gain access to a weapon at the rally where those attending had to go through metal detectors.

"Sandford further stated that if he were on the street tomorrow, he would try this again," according to the complaint.

It said Sandford told the Secret Service that he had been plotting to kill Trump for about a year and finally decided to act on Saturday, as "he finally felt confident to do it."

His arrest comes amid one of the nastiest US presidential campaigns in recent history, dominated by violent rhetoric, with Trump lashing out at Mexicans, Muslims and other groups.

The real estate billionaire enjoys Secret Service protection but also has his own private security detail that has been accused of using unnecessary force to remove people from events.

A number of protesters have been arrested at his rallies where riot police are deployed in force and there have been mounting demonstrations during his campaign appearances in recent months.

Sandford is due to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on July 5. He faces more than 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if found guilty on the charge of "act of violence on restricted grounds."
