In another severe crackdown on the rights of women, the Taliban have now banned girl students from attending school after the third grade, WION confirmed. 
 
Before this, girls were allowed to study in schools till the sixth grade. As reported by BBC Persian, the Taliban have now instructed schools and educational institutes to not permit girls to attend primary school, even if they are above the age of 10. 
 
The latest onslaught comes 683 days after girls aged 11 and above were banned from schools and 223 days after they were banned from attending universities. 
 
According to a report published by BBC, the Ministry of Education's officials have asked the principals of schools and short-term training classes to ensure that "girls over 10 years old are not allowed to study in primary schools".

"We were told that girls who are tall and over 10 years old are not allowed to enter the school," said a sixth-grade student in eastern Afghanistan, while speaking to the BBC. 
 
Speaking about the recent crackdown, the spokesman of the Ministry of Public Affairs of the Taliban Mohammad Sadiq Akaf told the BBC, "From our side, the administration has not done such a thing, and if something is done, it will be related to the Ministry of Education."

An eight-year-old girl was killed and 15 others injured after a woman crashed her car into a primary school in Wimbledon, south-west London, on Thursday morning.

According to local media reports, the girls were "having a tea party" at the time when a black Land Rover smashed through the gates of the school.

Police have arrested the woman, who is said to be in her 40s, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The incident took place around 9.30 am following which the Metropolitan Police were called in about the car crashing into the school building on Camp Road.

Later, paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance were dispatched to attend to the injured girls aged 4 to 11.

Firefighters were also at the scene, removing safety railings to help emergency services reach the site.

"This is a very difficult time for everyone here at the school and across the wider community,” detective chief superintendent for the police Clair Kelland said in a news conference.

Chair of the school's board of governors, John Tucker, told the news conference: "The school community is profoundly affected by this tragedy and, at the moment, we're not in a position to make any further comment."

MP for Wimbledon Stephen Hammond told the BBC that the location was "really quite remote", adding it is situated roughly a mile from Wimbledon village and on the way to several nearby golf clubs.

Many children have become so much accustomed to wearing diapers that they are not interested in changing the convenient but unsanitary method. As per Mayo Clinic, the average age of children who receive toilet training is between 18 months and 24 months, however many parents have been avoiding the training session.

Child development expert Rita Messmer said that the number of children wearing diapers in school has “skyrocketed”, as she emphasised her 11-year-old patient who had not learned how to use the toilet on their own.

<h2 lang="en-US">Burden for teachers</h2>

The lack of knowledge of children has become a burden for a lot of teachers who are forced to assist them with soaked diapers. 
 
“Parents have a responsibility to make sure their school-aged kids aren’t wearing diapers anymore. Teachers aren’t there to change their students’ diapers. That’s crossing a line,” said Rosler. 
 
Although the issue is rampant in Switzerland, similar problems have emerged in Buffalo, New York where parents have not been teaching their children how to use the toilet. 
 
“Teacher aides here say that it’s not their responsibility (to change diapers),” Phil Rumore, president of the Buffalo Teachers Federation, said.

On the other hand,&nbsp;Mizrahi girls are depicted as wild, boisterous, and improper.

It was seen in the video that each girl's name lights on the screen as she passes by. Her last name is scratched out and Mizrahi names are placed there.&nbsp;

The students in the video are 12th graders. There is also a staff member seen in the video who made an appearance at one point.

The video soon gained traction and received widespread condemnation with people terming its content as racist. When the opposing voices grew stronger, the school decided to take down the video from social media platform.

"This is a video that never should have been made, and it was an accident that happened under our watch," the school's management said in a statement.

"The school apologises and is sorry for the content even though it was made by the students as satire and a parody as part of Purim events. Anyone who was exposed to the school's activity throughout the years knows that this doesn't reflect the schools at all."

The students defended themselves saying that it was only recorded in good faith and meant no harm.&nbsp;

"In light of the outrage that the video we uploaded during Adar caused, we the 12th graders want to clear up a few things," they said in a statement. "The video was produced in a purely humorous way and refers to the school's inside jokes."

The country's top advisory body for Centre and state on school education, NCERT, has reportedly revised the history syllabus and removed the chapters titled 'Kings and Chronicles' and the 'The Mughal Courts' from the medieval History textbooks of CBSE for Class 12, said a top official.

The revised class 12 history textbooks of NCERT will be adopted by the government schools in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in which the chapters on Mughal courts have been reportedly deleted.

Dinesh Prasad Saklani, Director of NCERT strongly denied the claims that chapters on Mughals were dropped.

"It's a lie. (Chapters on) Mughals have not been dropped. There was a rationalisation process last year because due to COVID, there was pressure on students everywhere...Expert committees examined the books from std 6-12. They recommended that if this chapter is dropped, it won't affect the knowledge of the children and an unnecessary burden can be removed...The debate is unnecessary. Those who don't know, can check the textbooks..." he said.

"We are working as per NEP (National Education Policy) 2020. This is a transition phase. NEP 2020 speaks of reducing the content load. We are implementing it. NCF (National Curriculum Framework) for school education is being formed, it will be finalised soon. Textbooks will be printed in 2024 as per NEP. We have not dropped anything right now," he added.

In the chapters currently under discussion,&nbsp;the students were taught about “Akbarnama” (the official chronicle of the reign of Akbar) and “Badshah Nama” (chronicle of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan), the composition of manuscripts, capitals and courts, Mughal rulers and their empire.

"We teach our students using NCERT books...whatever is there in the revised edition will be followed," said Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak.

Additional Chief Secretary (basic and secondary education) Deepak Kumar earlier said, "We follow NCERT books and whatever is available in the revised edition, we will follow it in state schools from 2023-24 session.”

Similarly, chapters like the ‘Central Islamic lands’, ‘Confrontation of cultures’ and ‘The Industrial Revolution’ were also reportedly removed from the history textbook of Class 11 titled ‘Themes In World History'.

Meanwhile, NCERT has also revised class 12 Political Science books, pulling out chapters like 'Rise of Popular Movements', which is about the Socialist and Communist parties' rise in India and 'Era of One-Party Dominance', which talks about the rule of Congress in the post-independence era.

NCERT's senior official said that they will implement the revised syllabus this year (2023-24). Speaking about the changes, Maharishi Patanjali Vidya Mandir's principal Alpona Dey earlier said, “NCERT books are being updated as per the provisions of the new National Education Policy (NEP)-2020. New content is being added by removing topics that have become irrelevant. Changes in the syllabus were made from time to time which was a good thing.”

A lot of these changes in the syllabus were announced in 2022 when CBSE was rationalising its syllabi for students in April.

In a note, the NCERT listed the changes and said, "The content of the textbooks has been rationalised for various reasons, including overlapping with similar content in other subject areas in the same class, similar content included in the lower or higher classes on the same subject.”&nbsp;

The sleep-deprived teenagers have become reluctant participants of a new controversial experiment that attempts to get their days off to a much earlier start.&nbsp;The pilot project is taking place in Kupang, the capital of East Nusa Tenggara province.&nbsp;Under it, twelfth-graders from 10 high schools have been starting classes early in the morning, 5:30 am to be precise.

Netizens too are not too pleased with the experiment. As one Twitter user puts it "Yikes".

Another user ColminIndonesia has suggested school clubs to increase productivity, they wrote, the "early bird catches the worm - but only if it's light enough to see the worm and the bird is not half asleep already. This pilot initiative goes too far, does more harm than good. It should stop. Better to run productive after school clubs instead."

Speaking to AFP, Robot said that the 5:30 am classes scheme has "no correlation with the effort to improve the quality of education." He said that it can cause sleep deprivation, which can affect their health and behaviour.&nbsp;

"They will only sleep for a few hours and this is a serious risk for their health. This also will cause them stress and they will vent their stress by acting out," he said.

In spite of the criticism, authorities have maintained the experiment. It has actually been extended to the local education agency, due to which the agency's civil servants now also start their day at 5:30 am.&nbsp;

A student told local media that they were not consulted by the school administration before taking decisions.

"Nobody that I know – ask anyone here – no one requested this change,” student Jay Remella told WMUR.

“It was solely made by the school board and on a parent's complaint.”

Noah Boudreault, a board of education member said that the urinal prohibition was a part of "compromise". The proposal was accepted by a 4-1 vote on Monday.

The ban has replaced earlier proposal from vice-chairman that sought to restrict access to bathrooms and locker rooms based on gender assigned at birth and not the one students identified with.&nbsp; 
 
Under the new policy, the maximum occupancy for each bathroom and locker room will be capped at the number of stalls it contains. It also prevents students from using shared changing areas.

USA: School students stage walkout over urinal entry rule on gender-at-birth basis

The National Education Union (NEU) has declared that teachers would walk out in England and Wales on seven occasions in February and March in protest of their wages. On February 1 and March 15 and 16, there will be national strikes. There are a number of regional dates as well. About 300,000 teachers and support staff members in England and Wales cast ballots for the NEU, the largest education union in the UK.&nbsp;The secretary of education has stated that she will meet with union representatives later this week, as reported by the BBC.&nbsp;

In line with advice from the Department of Education, head teachers are required to take "all reasonable steps" to keep schools open for as many students as possible throughout a strike.

After a referendum by the NAHT union fell short of the legally mandated 50 per cent&nbsp;turnout level, head teachers in England decided not to strike.

The union claims that due to supposed disruption brought on by postal strikes, a second ballot is being considered.

However, due to the needed turnout in Wales, NAHT members there will engage in strike action.

As confirmed by NEU, a school will only be impacted on a maximum of four of the seven dates.

In 2022, most state school teachers in England and Wales saw pay increases of five per cent.

Scotland's teachers have been on strike even since Christmas. The 16-day rolling strike started on Monday, with two local authorities' worth of schools participating daily.

How much raise are they asking for?

They are asking for a raise that at least matches the double-digit inflation.

In Scotland, teachers were offered a five per cent raise, which they rejected, instead demanding 10 per cent.

Across England and Wales, in 2022, many state-school teachers received a 5 per cent pay raise, while in Northern Ireland, many of them were offered 3.2 per cent for the school years 2021-22, and 2022-23.

However, teacher’s unions argue that with inflation above ten per cent, these meagre raises are essentially pay cuts.

When will the strikes start?

As per Daily Mail, strikes will happen over the course of two months; February and March.

On February 1 itself, thousands of teachers will walk out. This is expected to affect more than 23,000 schools.

Further strikes have been announced over six days, spread out between the two months. February 14, March 15 and March 16 will witness larger strikes, while February 28 and March 1 and 2 have been set for regional walkouts.&nbsp;

The NEU said that each school will only be affected for four days each, however, this has caused concern among the parents.

With more than 190 languages being spoken in the state, linguistic diversity is a major strength that offers a number of social, cultural, and economic advantages, she added.

The decision was made considering the fact that almost 239,000 people speak Punjabi at home, meaning, it is the fastest-growing language in the country, SBS Punjabi reported. A census taken in 2021 revealed there’s an 80% rise in Punjabi language speakers compared to 2016.

North London Collegiate School (NLCS) is a £22,000-a-year girls' school. Several officials including teachers are now reportedly under investigation for alleged malpractice.

The Guradian quoted sources who said that more than 20 cases have been forwarded for review to malpractice committees convened by A-level examination boards. The committees held confidential hearings this month.

Some of the malpractice allegations have been dismissed but others have been upheld.

“We take allegations of malpractice very seriously and investigate all those put to us. Where malpractice is found we have systems in place to ensure, as far as possible, that appropriate sanctions are taken according to the evidence. We cannot comment on individual cases," said a spokersperson of Pearson, one of the examination boards involved in the investigation. The spokesperson was quoted by The Guardian.

The NLCS reportedly declined to reveal how many cases were being investigated.

A state MP told TASS news agency that the attacker was armed with a couple of Makarov pistols.

Local media reported that the gunman later killed himself following the attack, and that his body was recovered by the police.

"Today, immediately after the police received a report of a shooting at school No. 88 in the city of Izhevsk, employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Udmurt Republic went to the scene and attempted to detain the suspect. As of now, the police have found the body of the man who opened fire," Sputnik reported citing the police.

No details about the identity of the gunman and his motive for the attack have been revealed. According to officials, the school has been evacuated and the area has been fenced off.

Izhevsk, a city of around 650,000 housing several prominent central government buildings, is located west of the Ural mountains in central Russia, about 960 kilometres (596 miles) east of Moscow.
