<p>“A lot of people are going to think twice before they have either a first child or a subsequent child because everything is costing more. You also may feel like you have to work more.” said Isabel Sawhill, a senior fellow at the institute.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is pertinent to note that the earlier figure stood at $233,610, as released by the US Department of Agriculture in 2015.</p>

<p>According to Brookings Institution, the new calculations used the previous government estimate only, using it as a baseline but also pairing it up with the recent inflation trends.&nbsp;</p>

Secret schools: Afghan girls defy Taliban, take huge risks to continue studies

<p>In a remote village near the desert town of Jaisalmer is a female-only school, called the Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls School. Alongside it is a women’s economic centre, that will promote entrepreneurship in local women, and also act as a museum, a venue for performances, and an art gallery showcasing regional handicrafts including textiles.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chaitanya Raj Singh Bhati, who is a social entrepreneur from Jaisalmer and has been a part of the desert school project, said, "The project has been going on for a long time, but it was hampered due to Covid. We decided to do this in 2017. The design was finalised in 2019."</p>

<p>Diana Kellogg Architects, located in New York, designed the school. The school was constructed by local artisans using hand-cut local sandstone, found typically in the Thar desert. The oval-shaped structure of the school is distinctive and has garnered much attention from architecture enthusiasts. The building can resist temperatures of up to 50 degrees Celsius and requires no air-conditioning even in peak summer temperatures.</p>

<p>The school is located close to the village of Kanoi in a rural part of Jaisalmer. Around 400 girls can attend the school from kindergarten to the tenth grade. The school's mission is to educate and teach women in traditional trades, including embroidery, weaving, and art. The complex known as the "Gyaan Centre" consists of three structures, including the school, the Medha Hall, which is a library, and a women’s economic centre.</p>

<p>When asked about maintaining the quality of teachers and how they plan to attract talent in a remote area, Bhati said, "To be honest, that has been a struggle. No one really wants to come and live in Jaisalmer."</p>

<p>The school uniform was designed&nbsp;by Sabyasachi Mukherjee using Ajrak, a regional printing method, but, “the process has been taken forward by this local designer called Santosh Rathi using&nbsp;locally sourced material, mostly from Jaisalmer and Barmer," adds Bhati.</p>

<p>A retired&nbsp;priest&nbsp;has been charged with indecent assault following a decade-long investigation into a residential school in Manitoba,&nbsp;Canadian&nbsp;police said on Friday.</p>

<p>Arthur Masse, 92, was arrested and charged on Thursday with a single charge of indecent assault on a 10-year-old girl at Fort Alexander Residential School in Manitoba.</p>

<p>The assault by Masse took place between&nbsp;1968&nbsp;and&nbsp;1970 while the girl was a student and the allegations were brought forward in February 2010. A criminal investigation was launched in 2011.</p>

<p>The school was built on the territory of the Sagkeeng First Nation and closed in 1970. Reuters was unable to immediately reach the&nbsp;priest&nbsp;or his lawyer for comment.</p>

<p>Canada's residential school system operated between 1831 and 1996 to assimilate indigenous children. They were run by several Christian denominations on behalf of the government, most by the Catholic Church.</p>

<p>A report released in 2015 by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada documented the atrocities, including rape and malnutrition, suffered by many of the children who attended the schools.</p>

<p>RCMP Officers said they obtained&nbsp;75&nbsp;witness and victim statements, but due to the passage of time, many couldn’t participate.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The emotional trauma experienced by victims of abuse is very real, and despite the years that intervened between the alleged occurrences and when police were investigating, that trauma is still present,” Manaigre said.</p>

<p>On Friday, the Sri Lankan authorities declared a shutdown of government offices and schools for two weeks, given the public transport ground that is almost completely halted due to a lack of dollars to make payments and import fuel, reported AFP.</p>

<p>The shutdown came one day after United Nations launched an emergency response to the country's economic crisis by providing food to thousands of pregnant women suffering from food shortages.</p>

<p>The UN said that four out of five people in Sri Lanka are skipping meals as they cannot afford to eat, which they referred to as a "dire humanitarian crisis" with millions of people in need of aid.</p>

<p>"I had hoped, when I became president, I would not have to do this, again," a distraught President Joe Biden said as he led national mourning, vowing to overcome the US gun lobby and find a way to tighten gun ownership laws.</p>

<p>Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the number of gun deaths in the United States underwent a "historic" increase in 2020.</p>

<p>And the US racked up 19,350 firearm homicides in 2020, up nearly 35 percent over 2019, and 24,245 gun suicides, up 1.5 percent.</p>

<p>At 6.1 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in 2020, the firearm homicide rate was the highest in a quarter century.</p>

<p>Mass shootings have also risen, according to Everytown.</p>

<p>"Since 2009, there have been 274 mass shootings in the United States, resulting in 1,536 people shot and killed and 983 people shot and wounded," the group says.</p>

<p>The country is swamped with guns. US firearms makers produced over 139 million guns for the commercial market over the two decades from 2000, and the country imported another 71 million.</p>

<p>That includes high-powered assault rifles, which can be found for $500, and 9 millimeter pistols that combine ease of use, high accuracy and semi-automatic triggers with prices as low as $200.</p>
