Multiple schools in Jaipur and Lucknow receive bomb threats via email, students evacuated

In a recent incident at a middle school in Seegana village, Agra, the principal and a teacher got into a physical fight because the latter reported late to school.&nbsp;&nbsp;A video capturing the altercation&nbsp;has been doing the rounds on social media.&nbsp;

The video that's spreading online shows other teachers and staff members attempting to stop the fight between the two women. As reported by NDTV, the principal physically attacked Gunjan Choudhary, a teacher at the school.

In the widely circulated video, it's evident that the principal started the altercation by assaulting the teacher. During the scuffle, a voice in the background can be heard saying, "This is being recorded. Madam, you're being disrespectful. Is this appropriate?" Meanwhile, a man attempted to intervene and separate the two women.

The report says that the two women insulted each other verbally during the fight.

The pet parents placed the weapon back where his dog found it and then contacted the authorities. The bomb weighed approximately 10 pounds and measured around one foot in length.

According to a police report, the level of deterioration observed on the weapon suggested that it had been buried underground for a long&nbsp;period.

Four children killed, 15 others injured in airstrike on school in Myanmar

An inquiry has been ordered into the death of a 12-year-old student who was allegedly assaulted by students of senior classes at a government school in the capital city of New Delhi last week.&nbsp;

The Delhi government opened the probe on Tuesday (Jan 23), 12 days after the boy was assaulted before succumbing to his injuries on January 20. A post-mortem was conducted on Tuesday and the report was awaited by the police.&nbsp;

The autopsy was conducted by&nbsp;a panel of three doctors constituted by the Delhi government which also released a statement on the same day, expressing condolences to the grieving family.&nbsp;

“The alleged incident took place outside of the school's premises, as parents sought the CCTV footage and that has been ascertained. A prompt inquiry has been ordered already in the matter soliciting a report from the committee within two days and a formal report from the head of the school is to be submitted by Tuesday,” the government said.&nbsp;

The boy’s family has also alleged medical negligence by a private doctor in providing treatment to the young student that led to his death.&nbsp;

The peer-reviewed analysis published in <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpub/article/PIIS2468-2667(23)00306-7/fulltext#%20">The Lancet Public Health journal</a> titled ‘Effects of education on adult mortality: A global systematic review and meta-analysis’ on Tuesday (Jan 23) also found that not attending school is as deadly as smoking or heavy drinking.&nbsp;

Notably, the study was published ahead of the International Day of Education. The United Nation’s cultural agency, UNESCO, says that the day is celebrated to highlight the crucial role education and teachers play in countering hate speech, which today has snowballed with the use of social media and is damaging the fabric of our society. &nbsp;

Therefore, according to the meta-analysis, if a person has completed primary school, high school, a college degree and a master’s degree they could have up to a 34 per cent reduction in risk of death when compared to someone with no formal education.

On the other hand, if a person has never been to school at any point in their life, it is as bad as consuming five or more alcoholic drinks every day or smoking 10 cigarettes each day for a decade, said the researchers.&nbsp;

<h2>Benefits of schooling not just limited to health</h2>

The authors of the study, backed by the Norwegian government and the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, also noted how having access to education increases the ability of a person to build a healthy lifestyle for themselves, given that they have the means to increase the resources available to them, both monetary and social.&nbsp;

“Any education at any point is helpful in reducing mortality risk,” said Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) researcher and co-author of the study Claire Henson, during an interview when asked if the same results applied to a person who dropped out of school early in life and then went back later.&nbsp;

Henson also spoke about how given the findings of the research and the effect of education on life expectancy, “It’s time that policymakers look at investments in education as investments in health.”

The report underscored the reading difficulties among teenagers, stating that "nearly 85 per cent of surveyed youth can measure length using a scale when the starting point is 0 cm. This proportion drops sharply to 39 per cent when the starting point is moved".

The findings reveal a broader issue, with only 50 per cent of youth adept at common calculations like time, weights, and unitary methods.

As far as mathematics competence is concerned, the report highlighted a significant gap in mathematics skills, with "more than half struggling with division (3-digit by 1-digit) problems".

The ASER survey also touched&nbsp;upon English proficiency, stating that just over half of the surveyed youth (57.3 per cent) can read sentences in English.

It was reported by media, that the school even received a bomb threat amid the backlash. Many parents and community leaders gathered outside the school and claimed that they should not have moved the classes online to make room for around 1,900 migrants, who were sheltered temporarily in the school's gym and auditorium on Tuesday (Jan 9). 
 
"It's inexcusable to do this to the students of New York City high schools, especially after all they've been through with COVID," said one parent, reported CBS News. 
 
"They have to come up with another solution. They cannot do this to school kids," said a resident, identified as Steve. Meanwhile, assemblyman Mike Riley said, “Mayor, you knew this was going to happen. Everyone knew this was going to happen.” 
 
The protesters said that they shouldn't use schools as shelters and that Floyd Bennett Field, which is located near the shore of Jamaica Bay, is not a good place for keeping migrants because it is vulnerable to weather events.

City officials said James Madison High School will never be used again for sheltering asylum seekers, however, New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol said that they acted, "out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals working and living at the centre."

<h2>About the victims and suspect</h2>

Speaking about the victims, the local police chief said that both students were taken to the hospital and one of them later succumbed to his injuries.&nbsp;

“Both victims were transported to an area hospital,” Raleigh police chief Estella Patterson said during a press conference.&nbsp;

“Sadly one victim succumbed to his injuries,” she added. The police chief also called the incident “very unfortunate” and “one that is very disturbing to us.”

The teen who has been accused of stabbing his two peers has been arrested and charged with murder on a juvenile petition, reported WRAL News.&nbsp;

The police said that the student who died was 15 years old and the other student who was injured and is hospitalised is aged 16. Both the victims and the suspect have not been identified.&nbsp;

Cherelle McLaughlin, the mother of the alleged stabber, told WRAL News her son was acting in self-defence and claimed he was concerned for his safety at the school.

A Jewish school in Canada’s Montreal was hit by another gunfire for the second time this week, with police now increasing security in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war.

CBC News reported that gunshots were heard near Yeshiva Gedola of Montreal,&nbsp;located on Deacon Road in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood, around 5 am Sunday (Nov 12).

The police officers, who were called in, found bullet marks on the building and shell casings on the ground nearby. However, no one was injured.

Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) spokesperson Véronique Dubuc told CBC News that witnesses spotted a vehicle fleeing the scene at the time of the gunfire.&nbsp;

Yeshiva Gedola was one of the two Jewish schools targeted by gunmen on Wednesday overnight.

Both Yeshiva Gedola&nbsp;and Talmud Torah Elementary School, another Jewish school in Côte-des-Neiges, were struck by gunfire overnight Wednesday.&nbsp;

After the clash at Concordia University, however, three people were injured and one person was arrested. AFP quoted administrators of Concordia University who said that the university is witnessing "a concerning rise in acts of intimidation and intolerant behaviour" that has created an atmosphere of fear among students.

The administrators reportedly said in a statement that swastikas were found in one of the buildings in an incident separate from the clash.

Jewish organisations are condemning the incidents.

"These are difficult times for Jews around the world," said Yair Szlak, a representative of a local Jewish organisation CJA.

"There are those who are trying to import the war going on in Israel to the streets of Montreal."

Francois Legault, the Premier of Quebec Province where these incidents took place, has called for greater police presence. He also told reporters he was not ruling out a ban on protests related to the Israel-Hamas war.

The Israel-Hamas war began after Hamas fighters crossed into Israel from the Gaza Strip and launched an attack that saw 1400 deaths, as per Israeli estimates. Hamas fighters also took more than 200 hostages. Israel has responded with an overwhelming military force that has seen thousands of civilian deaths in the Gaza Strip. Canada: Firing at two Jewish schools in Montreal

A deadly airstrike by Israel on Gaza City hit a school, which was being run by the United Nations and was serving as a shelter, on Saturday (Nov 4). 
 
The attack took place at a time when US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was set to hear demands of the Arabs for a ceasefire in a meeting to be held in Jordan. 
 
As reported by Reuters, Al-Fakhoura school which is located in Jabalia refugee camp was hit in an Israeli strike and led to many evacuees, who had earlier taken shelter, getting killed or wounded. 
 
At least 15 people were killed and dozens of other were injured, said Mohammad Abu Selmeyah, the head of al-Shifa Hospital, after the incident, reported Reuters.

In Gaza, the Ministry of Health stated that two women were killed at the Nasser Children Hospital's door by another Israeli missile strike.

Hours before, the health officials in Gaza had stated that an ambulance was hit in an airstrike which was part of the convoy carrying injured Palestinians at al-Shifa hospital. 
 
Israel's military had stated that the ambulance was identified and hit because it was "being used by an Hamas terrorist cell" and that many Hamas fighters were killed in the attack. 
 
Israel was challenged by the Palestinian health ministry to provide proof of militants being present in the ambulance. Israel stated that it is mulling over the release of additional information.

At least 27 killed in Israeli strikes near UN-run Gaza school, claims Hamas-run health ministry

UK's Department for Education has admitted that it miscalculated its funding plans. The government has ordered an inquiry after the department apologised. BBC reported that the number of pupils was underestimated, the 2.7 per cent funding increase per pupil has now been revised to 1.9 per cent.

The development may make school recalculate their own budgets as they were given indication of funding they could received for year 2024/25 in July, based on a national formula that decides allocation of GBP 59.6 billion school budget.

"This is an extremely unfortunate and frustrating error," said Geoff Burton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, as quoted by BBC.

The education department's error was pounced upon by the Labour Party. The party's shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson termed this "yet more Conservative-mae chaos".

The teachers union said in a statement that government is "not paying attention to the crisis in education"

"Head teachers have planned for that money and budgets are pared to the bone," added the statement.

On Saturday (Oct 7) Labour Party held annual conference in Liverpool. Labour leader Keir Starmer and his deputy Angela Rayner were cheered on by waiting supporters.

Polls are currently favourable to Labour Party with 20-point lead over UK PM Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party.

UK: Education department admits funding calculation blunder

The Egyptian government's recent decision to ban the wearing of the niqab (full-face veil) inside schools for the upcoming academic year, starting on September 30, has ignited conversations and elicited reactions within the country.

Egyptian Minister of Education, Reda Hegazy, has officially confirmed this decision and provided details about the new guidelines.

According to&nbsp;Hegazy, the new dress code allows students to wear a hair cover that does not obscure their face, reported BNN Breaking.&nbsp;

However, it strictly prohibits the use of models or illustrations that promote the hair cover unless they are approved by the relevant Directorate of Education.

This measure aims to strike a balance between religious expression and maintaining a clear educational environment.

Minister Hegazy emphasised the pivotal role of guardians in students' dress choices. It is imperative that guardians are aware of and consent to their daughters' decision to wear a hair cover.

Furthermore, this choice should remain entirely voluntary, free from external pressure or coercion. To ensure this, the Ministry of Education has instructed education directorates across governorates to verify the guardians' awareness of this decision.&nbsp;

Regarding school uniforms, the ministry has introduced a coordinated approach.

The school board, in collaboration with trustees, parents, and teachers, will determine the appropriate uniform colours for both male and female students.

This decision will be made in consultation with the Directorate of Education, ensuring a unified and coordinated appearance for all students.

Minister Hegazy stressed that changes to school uniforms should be considered at the start of each educational stage, with a minimum interval of three years between alterations.

While guardians have the freedom to choose where to purchase uniforms, students are obliged to adhere to the specified uniform regulations. Any student found in violation of these regulations will not be permitted to enter or attend school.

Though the UK government had been surveying the schools since 2018 when a collapse occurred, the order was necessitated&nbsp;after two to three more cases of failure of RAAC was reported in recent months.
