British Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng has had a rough start to his new job. Now, it has come to light that Kwarteng met senior executives of Saudi Arabian oil firms in rather clandestine meetings when he was the business secretary, per a Guardian report. The publication stated that Kwarteng met the chief executives of Saudi Aramco, Sabic and the chair of Alfanar Group, an industrial conglomerate in January, earlier this year when he visited KSA on a two-day trip. The information was accessed using the Freedom of Information Act (FoI) which revealed that the meetings were undisclosed. Read more: Proposed UK tax cuts caused ‘a little turbulence’, says finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in its originally published report had made no mention of Kwarteng's meetings with the Saudia Arabian oil executives. According to the rules, meetings with foreign government figures is not required to be punched into the records but meetings or even chance encounters with business executives is required to be declared. Minutes of the meeting acquired by the publication reveals a section titled “Aramco flight talk” wherein Kwarteng discussed the “history and opportunities for the company”. However, other elements of the meeting discussed in the said 'Aramco flight' were redacted by the government, citing it could harm UK-Saudi relations. Read more: UK ‘will need $66bn spending cuts’ to bounce back from unfunded tax cuts Notably, Saudi Aramco is the world’s biggest oil producer while Sabic is the world’s fourth-largest petrochemical company. Experts say that meeting with top officials of such companies is expected to be lodged in the official records. However, the fact that it was omitted suggests that the minister was being lobbied when he was responsible for UK's energy policy. While the UK government remained opaque on the meetings, Sabic in a Twitter post mentioned that the then UK business secretary indeed visited the company facility, We were honored with the visit of Kwasi Kwarteng, UK Business Secretary, Energy and Industrial Strategy, and the accompanying delegation to United Company, where they were briefed about the world’s largest CO2 purification and liquefaction plant.#SABIC pic.twitter.com/bL5PhwkLF1 — SABIC I سابك (@SABIC) February 1, 2022 × The UK has been going through a harrowing energy crisis and the ordinary Britons are expected to receive inflated energy bills this winter. Thus, the secret meetings of Kwarteng which could have influenced the energy plans of the UK are being scrutinized microscopically. As reported by WION, Kwarteng has had a troubled start to his new job. Within days of announcing his ambitious tax cut plans, he was forced to take a volta face on the 45 per cent tax cut for the top earners. Additionally, he caught flak for celebrating with champagne after delivering the mini-budget. After the controversy snowballed, the UK finance minister said it 'wasn’t the best way to go'. “I think it was a difficult call and I totally get how it looks. I just feel that it was something that I was signed up to do and I had to do…With hindsight it probably wasn’t the best way to go." US: Top Democratic senator urges to end all cooperation with Saudi Arabia, including weapons

On Monday, Senate Foreign Relations Chair Robert Menendez urged to freeze all US cooperation including weapons sales and security with Saudi Arabia in response to their continued support for Russia. This also comes after last week when OPEC+ decided to reduce its oil production by two million barrels a day, the largest supply cut in the past two years.

According to a National Security Council spokesperson, John Kirby, President Joe Biden will work with Congress to adjust its policies with Saudi Arabia amid the outrage over the OPEC+ decision in which Saudi Arabia plays a leading role. Kirby spoke in an interview with CNN, about growing calls from United States Congress, to cut off weapons sales and security cooperation to Riyadh.

He indicated that Biden was willing to discuss these plans and proposals with lawmakers, “This is a relationship that we need to continue to re-evaluate, that we need to be willing to revisit. And certainly, in light of the OPEC+ decision, I think that’s where he is,” he said during the interview, indicated the media reports.

These remarks are made a day after Democratic Senator Menendez said that Saudi Arabia's crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman has decided to “help underwrite '' Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine, “through the OPEC+ cartel”. Since Russia is both a major oil producer and also a part of OPEC+.

He added, “There simply is no room to play both sides of this conflict…either you support the rest of the free world in trying to stop a war criminal from violently wiping off an entire country off of the map, or you support him,” Menendez also warned that choosing the latter will be a “terrible decision driven by economic self-interest.”

“I will not green-light any cooperation with Riyadh until the Kingdom reassesses its position with respect to the war in Ukraine. Enough is enough,” said the Democratic senator regarding the recent increase in Russian missile attacks in several cities across Ukraine. This was also condemned by president Biden earlier.

However, it is not just Menendez, as members of Congress, Richard Blumenthal and Ro Khanna echoed a similar sentiment in their opinion piece they wrote for Politico, which indicated that the OPEC+ oil cut was a “pointed blow to the US”. They also opined how Washington can retaliate by immediately holding back the “massive transfer of American warfare technology into the eager hands of the Saudis.”

Saudi Arabia once played a key role in US’s policy in the middle east, but following the OPEC+ decision, members from both Democrat and Republican parties in the US are pushing for measures and punishments against the Kingdom. Previously Saudi Arabia has purchased billions of dollars worth of weapons from Washington and has promised to buy more. After the boat's movement raised the suspicion further, the Royal Marines from 42 Commando took charge and dropped sail in the choppy waters. "Royal Marines from 42 Commando, the UK military's specialists in these operations, seized control of the vessel in choppy conditions, before sailors moved in to search the craft for any illegal cargo, while overhead the Wildcat observed proceedings and provided cover for those scouring the dhow for her illicit cargo," it added. In a deeply conservative Saudi Arabia where women were till recently not even permitted to drive a car, a woman taking up pole-dancing is sure to raise eyebrows. But in capital Riyadh women are rejecting stigma by taking pole dancing lessons to improve bodily strength and flexibility.

Nada, who news agency AFP said only wished to be known by her first name, found that her decision to take pole-dancing lessons was met with stiff resistance in her social circle.

Family and friends in the capital Riyadh told her the gruelling form of exercise –- a test of strength and coordination involving acrobatic movements on a vertical pole –- was "so wrong".

Pole dancing carries with it, an association with seedy strip clubs and burlesque houses often depicted in Hollywood movies. In a deeply religious and orthodox country like Saudi Arabia, pole dancing is sure to meet social opposition.

Undeterred, Nada stuck with the course she enrolled in a few years ago at a local gym, in part to chip away at that very stigma.

The 28-year-old believes she has made progress, at least within her own circle of friends.

"At first, they said this is inappropriate and a mistake," she told AFP. "Now they say 'We want to try it'."

Pole dancing enthusiasts argue that because alcohol is banned in Saudi Arabia, and there are no strip clubs, the activity's bad rap must come from abroad.

Gravitas Global Headlines: Saudi Arabia hikes oil prices for US buyers

Saudi Arabia Crown Prince and the country's de-facto ruler Mohammed bin Salman is attracting criticism of possibly using the prime ministerial post to get diplomatic immunity abroad, especially in the US. Mohammed bin Salman or MBS as he is often called, was appointed prime minister of the country by a royal decree.

The development took place as US debates whether Prince Mohammed qualifies for immunity from lawsuits in American courts.

The 37-year-old de facto ruler of the world's biggest crude exporter has been targeted in multiple lawsuits in the US in recent years, notably over the 2018 killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the kingdom's Istanbul consulate, which temporarily turned him into a pariah in the West.

A judge in the US had already given US lawyers a deadline of October 3 to file a "statement of interest" on the immunity question. But now, the US government has sought 45 more days citing the latest development of Prince Mohammed becoming prime minister of Saudi Arabia.

Sarah Leah Whitson, executive director of the NGO Khashoggi founded, Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), told AFP it was a "last-ditch effort to conjure up a new title for him" -- in other words, "a title-washing ploy".

Mohammed bin Salaman is already immesely powerful figure in Saudi Arabia and is a de-facto leader of the country. Before becoming prime minister, he was managing various important portfolios and just another title is not viewed to be of being of any real political significance

Little is expected to change inside the kingdom as a result of his new title, said Umar Karim, an expert on Saudi politics at the University of Birmingham.

"MBS was already completely in control, and there was no threat as such to him that could be countered by him becoming prime minister," Karim said. He was quoted by AFP.

Saudi Arabia is planning to launch two astronauts to the International Space Station aboard a space capsule from Elon Musk’s SpaceX. It has become the latest Gulf nation to strengthen ties with private U.S. space companies. Eric Njoka tells you more.

Saudi Arabia is planning to launch two astronauts to the International Space Station aboard a space capsule from Elon Musk's SpaceX, becoming the latest Gulf nation to strengthen ties with private U.S. space companies, according to three people familiar with the arrangement.

The sources, speaking anonymously to discuss the mission's crew before its formal announcement, said the deal was signed privately earlier this year with Houston's Axiom Space, which arranges and manages private missions to space on U.S. spacecraft for researchers and tourists.

Under the deal, two Saudi astronauts will ride SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule to the space station for a roughly weeklong stay early next year, the sources said. The Saudis would be the first from their country to go into space aboard a private spacecraft.

Axiom had no immediate comment. Officials with the Saudi Space Commission, Riyadh's space agency founded in 2018, were not immediately available to comment.

Private U.S. companies have increasingly played a key role in sending astronauts to the space station as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the U.S. space agency now focusing heavily on returning humans to the moon, looks to commercialize the United States' decades-old human spaceflight presence in low-Earth orbit.

The deal would mark the latest that puts companies like Axiom in a unique role of diplomacy long dominated by government agencies like NASA. The space station is a football field-sized laboratory some 250 miles (400 km) above Earth that has housed international crews of astronauts for over 20 years.

The Saudi astronauts will join two previously announced Americans, retired NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson and race car driver and investor John Shoffner, the sources said. The mission, called Ax-2, will be the second spaceflight arranged by Axiom.

The private astronauts aboard Ax-2 have yet to be approved by a NASA-chaired panel of the space station's participating stakeholders and countries, such as Russia, Canada, Japan and the European Space Agency, a U.S. official said. The official added that the mission is likely to receive approval.

For Axiom and other space companies, cutting deals with foreign governments is seen as vital to sustaining a business centered on putting people in space. Putting people into space is a luxury for wealthy adventure seekers and a source of national prestige and inspiration for aspiring space powers like Saudi Arabia.

Axiom launched its first private mission to the space station in April, sending a four-man crew to the space station aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule that included a Canadian investor and an Israeli businessman.

And Axiom on Monday announced a deal with Turkey to launch the country's first two astronauts into space in late 2023. That will likely be for mission Ax-3, according to a person familiar with the flight.

Axiom's astronaut flight business is crucial experience for the company's broader goals of deploying its own private space station by mid-decade. It plans to first attach modules to the ISS before splitting off into a fully private structure once the existing international laboratory is retired around 2030.

The value of Axiom's Saudi agreement was not clear. Each Crew Dragon seat on Axiom's first mission sold for $55 million each.

Saudi Arabia: Yemeni man arrested after claiming Mecca pilgrimage for Queen Elizabeth II

In April, a man in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province set his family home on fire before iftar, the meal that breaks the Ramadan fast, causing a gory drug-induced killing that gripped the nation's media. His family lost four members in the shooting.

According to local newspapers, police claimed he was under the influence of shabu, a methamphetamine. Recent reports in Saudi media have raised concerns about the rise in drug use. One columnist there called the shipments of drugs into the kingdom "an open war against us, more dangerous than any other war."

As reported by CNN, over 47 million amphetamine pills were discovered concealed in a shipment of flour and discovered in a warehouse on Wednesday, Saudi police claimed the largest drug bust in their nation's history.

According to experts, Saudi Arabia is increasingly playing the role of the Middle East's drug capital, fueling demand and emerging as the main destination for traffickers from Syria and Lebanon, as evidenced by the record-breaking seizure. They claim that the kingdom is one of the biggest and wealthiest regional destinations for drugs, and that situation is only getting worse.

The General Directorate of Narcotics Control claims that in terms of the quantity of drugs seized, Wednesday's operation represented the largest single smuggling attempt. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has previously stated that "reports of amphetamine seizures from countries in the Middle East continue to refer predominantly to tablets bearing the Captagon logo," despite the fact that authorities failed to identify the drug they seized or the source.

Originally known as Captagon, this medication contained the artificial stimulant fenethylline. According to the European Monitoring Centre for Medications and Drug Addiction, counterfeit drugs with the name "Captagon" are frequently found in the Middle East even though they are no longer produced officially.

Drug busts in Saudi Arabia and other countries in the area have increased over time. 320 kilogrammes of amphetamine tablets and over 3,000 kilogrammes of hashish worth millions of dollars were taken from a fishing boat in the Gulf of Oman by a US Coast Guard vessel earlier this week.

Although it first gained popularity in the kingdom about 15 years ago, it has grown significantly in the last five years, "perhaps reaching the level of cannabis," according to Vanda Felbab-Brown, a fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington DC, who has written on the topic.

According to data from the International Addiction Review journal, the street value of captagon, if it was the same substance, could be up to $1.1 billion. The drug may be purchased for between $10 and $25 per pill.

After the government started issuing licences to private businesses, a number of drug rehabilitation facilities have appeared throughout the kingdom in recent years.

According to the CEO of Qaweem, one of the first such facilities to launch, Khalid Al Mashari, four or five such facilities have opened in the previous two years. That proves that the government understands the value of rehabilitation, he claims, but it also demonstrates that the issue is getting worse.

Is Saudi Arabia becoming the drug capital of the Middle East?

The OPEC (Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) and its allies have decided to cut down on oil production in a bid to boost the prices. The low prices sparked fears of a possible economic slowdown among a number of countries and this decision was taken as a precautionary measure.

According to the statement released by OPEC, the oil producers will decrease their output by 100,000 barrels per day for October – which is around 0.1 per cent of the global demand. However, they also said that they are ready to meet at any point to adjust the production depending on the situation.

"OPEC+ is wary of protracted price volatility generated by weak macro sentiment, thin liquidity and renewed China lockdowns, as well as uncertainty over a potential U.S.–Iran deal and efforts to create a Russian oil price cap," Matthew Holland at Energy Aspects to Reuters after the announcement.

In the last few months, the fuel prices have been extremely unstable and this is a move that can steady the situation, according to the OPEC nations. OPEC to cut production by 100,000 barrels per day after oil price slump

In 2022, Saudi Arabia is expected to have the fastest-growing economy, surpassing other faltering Western European and North American countries as well as Asian heavyweights China and India.

According to the report in Economist Intelligence, the Kingdom's gross domestic product is anticipated to expand at the fastest rate since 2011—7.5 percent—this year.

According to the research, increased energy costs, increased oil and gas output, significant investments in the energy and non-energy industries, and the successful implementation of a comprehensive COVID-19 immunisation campaign are the main drivers of the Kingdom's economic growth, as reported by the Arab news.

In addition, it predicted that Saudi Arabia's real GDP growth will be close to a healthy 5% in 2023 before reverting to a more manageable 3% growth between 2024 and 2026.

The current account balance of Saudi Arabia is predicted to be in surplus in 2022, amounting to roughly $163 billion, up from $44 billion in 2021.

Consumer price inflation is anticipated to average around 2.5 percent in 2022 and to further decline in 2023 as the Saudi Central Bank continues to tighten monetary policy in accordance with the US Federal Reserve, according to the report.

It made note of the fact that the Kingdom's ongoing regulatory reforms are enhancing the business climate and luring foreign capital.

Along with assisting the labour market, these reforms are also increasing the participation of the private sector in the economy.

“Pro-business reforms have made it easier to start a business and easier for foreign companies to invest in the economy, both of which are fundamental to the Kingdom’s long-term development plans under the Vision 2030 strategy,” the report said.

The report says Saudi Arabia's economic prognosis is still positive as long as the reform process stays on course and money keeps flowing into the country's important initiatives and expanding industries.

The International Monetary Fund forecasted in August that Saudi Arabia's GDP will increase by 7.6 percent in 2022.

The IMF's Article IV consultation report predicts that the Kingdom's inflation rate in 2022 will be 2.8 percent.

“Liquidity and fiscal support, reform momentum under Vision 2030, and high oil prices and production helped the economy recover with robust growth, contained inflation and a resilient financial sector,” said the IMF in a press release.

The report also mentioned that fiscal consolidation in Saudi Arabia will be supported by changes in tax administration and policy that will increase tax collection from sources other than oil.

Report: Saudi Arabia to grow at fastest pace in a decade

Weeks after arresting a university student and sentencing her to a 34-year prison term for using Twitter, the Saudi Arabian authorities have sentenced another woman to decades in prison.

Weeks after arresting a university student and sentencing her to a 34-year prison term for using Twitter, the Saudi Arabian authorities have sentenced another woman to decades in prison. Reportedly, Democracy for the Arab World Now (Dawn), a human rights group founded by 'murdered' journalist Jamal Khashoggi has revealed that a woman named Nourah bint Saeed al-Qahtani has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for using the internet to tear into the 'social fabric' of the country. However, apart from the jail term, not much is known about Saeed's age or the concrete reason why she was arrested. According to Guardian, which received the Dawn report, Saeed was arrested for tweeting her opinions and that too from an anonymous account. A similar playbook was used earlier As reported extensively by WION, Salma al-Shehab, a 34-year-old PhD student studying at Leeds University in the UK was sentenced to 34 years in prison by the country's court for using Twitter and allegedly retweeting tweets from dissidents. Read more: Saudi court sentences woman student for using Twitter; causing 'public unrest' Akin to Saeed, Salma was accused of causing "public unrest" and "destabilising civil and national security". Reportedly, Salma had returned to Saudi Arabia for a holiday but the Saudi authorities got hold of her and produced her in front of a special terrorist court which announced the draconian verdict. Abdullah Alaoudh, the director for the Gulf region at Dawn, who accessed the court documents which revealed Saeed's case stated that the slew of arrests could be connected to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s meeting with President Biden last month. “It is impossible not to connect the dots between Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s meeting with President Biden last month in Jeddah and the uptick in the repressive attacks against anyone who dares criticise the crown prince or the Saudi government for well-documented abuses.” Alaoudh was quoted as saying by The Guardian. It is pertinent to note that Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) controls a major stake in Twitter. Moreover, earlier this month, a US court found an ex-Twitter employee guilty of spying for Saudi officials. Ahmad Abouammo reportedly sold Twitter user information for cash. Kingdom Holding took to Twitter to share the news of its $3.4 billion investment program. The company stated that it had completed the investment in Russian companies within a one-month period from February to March, earlier this year.

This development comes on the back of Saudi Arabia joining the growing list of countries importing cheap Russian oil despite Western sanctions. As reported by WION, the Gulf country imported 647,000 tonnes of Russian oil in the second quarter, i.e., from April to June. In the same period a year ago, the Kingdom imported 320,000 tonnes of oil.

Experts are of the view that Russian oil is far too cheap for Saudi Arabia to resist the temptation of buying it. The investment in top Russian energy companies only makes further sense as the war continues to linger.
