Ahmad Abouammo, a former Twitter employee has been found guilty of spying for Saudi officials including those close to the Saudi crown prince. On Tuesday, Ahmad, a Saudi national was charged guilty on several criminal counts including being an illegal agent of a foreign government and engaging in money laundering as well as fraud. According to US prosecutor Colin Sampson, Ahmad had sold Twitter user information for a cash sum of $100,000 and a watch valued at more than $40,000. He received the valuables from someone close to the Saudi crown prince. "The evidence shows that, for a price and thinking no one was watching, the defendant sold his position to an insider of the crown prince," the prosecution told the San Franciso court and jurors. The then-Twitter workers had unfettered user info access According to the copy of the verdict, the jury deliberated for three days straight before coming to a conclusion and finding Ahmad guilty on six of the 11 charges. Reportedly, the prosecution believes that Ahmad and one of his fellow employees named Ali Alzabarah were hired by Saudi officials in 2014 to act as moles and find information regarding Twitter accounts that were critical of the regime. It is pertinent to note that at the time, Twitter employees could look even look behind the anonymous accounts by surveying the email addresses, date of birth, phone numbers and private data; meaning any individual could be identified with ease. Here's what's happening After completing his supposed assignment, Ahmad quit Twitter in 2015 and switched jobs for a position in Amazon at its main headquarter in Seattle. However, Ahmad's counsel Angela Chuang argued that it was a conspiracy to frame Ahmad and if the prosecutors wanted to go after someone, it should have been Ali Alzabarah who has reportedly escaped the USA, according to an FBI statement. "As much as the government wishes that was Mr Alzabarah sitting at the table right now, it is not. And that is on them, they let Mr Alzabarah flee the country while he was under FBI surveillance." said Chuang. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Saudi Arabia to purchase major missile defence systems from United States

With Yemen truce renewed, what are the prospects of peace?

The Taliban have condemned the US drone strike in Kabul city over the weekend that killed al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Without naming Zawahiri, the militant organisation said that the attack goes against “international principles" and the 2020 agreement on a US troop withdrawal.

“An air strike was carried out on a residential house in Sherpur area of Kabul city. The nature of the incident was not revealed at first,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement published on Twitter.

“The security and intelligence agencies of the Islamic Emirate investigated the incident and found that the attack was carried out by American drones. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan strongly condemns this attack on any pretext and calls it a clear violation of international principles and the Doha Agreement,” he said.

“Such actions are a repetition of the failed experiences of the past 20 years and are against the interests of the United States of America, Afghanistan and the region. Repeating such actions will damage the available opportunities,” the spokesman added.

Saudi's reaction

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia welcomed the announcement of Zawahiri killing.

"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia welcomed the announcement by US President Joe Biden of the targeting and killing of the terrorist leader of Al-Qaeda Ayman Al-Zawahiri," the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

US President on Monday evening announced that the CIA had carried out the drone strike over the weekend and killed Zawahiri.

What did Obama say?

Former US president Barack Obama on Monday welcomed the killing of al-Zawahiri.

Taking to Twitter Obama said, "More than 20 years after 9/11, one of the masterminds of that terrorist attack and Osama bin Laden's successor as the leader of al-Qaeda – Ayman al-Zawahiri – has finally been brought to justice."

"It's a tribute to President Biden's leadership, to the members of the intelligence community who have been working for decades for this moment, and to the counterterrorism professionals who were able to take al-Zawahiri out without a single civilian casualty.

"Tonight's news is also proof that it's possible to root out terrorism without being at war in Afghanistan. And I hope it provides a small measure of peace to the 9/11 families and everyone else who has suffered at the hands of al-Qaeda," the former US President added.

Australia

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Tuesday that the thoughts of Australians were with the families of all the victims of Ayman al-Zawahri's "acts of terror".

"May they find some small solace in the knowledge that he cannot cause more grief through his acts of terror, and let terrorists see that Afghanistan will never, ever be a safe haven for their hatred, their terrorism and their attacks on our humanity," Albanese told parliament on Tuesday.

According to CNN, the US undertook "a precision counterterrorism operation" targeting Zawahiri, who was sheltering in a safehouse in Kabul, a senior administration told reporters Monday.

According to the official, "a precise tailored airstrike" using two hellfire missiles was conducted at 9:48 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 30 at 6:18 am (Kabul time), through an unmanned air strike.

Saudi Arabia ready to move reconciliation talks to higher level: Iran

A citizen of Saudi Arabia was detained and thrown over to the Public Prosecution after it was claimed that he helped an Israeli-American journalist reach Mecca, the holiest shrine in Islam and a place that only Muslims are permitted to visit.

In violation of a restriction on non-Muslims, journalist Gil Tamary of Israel’s Channel 13 posted a video on Twitter on Monday showing himself sneaking into Mecca, the holiest city of Islam.

According to a police spokeswoman quoted by the Saudi Press Agency, Mecca regional police have “referred a citizen” to prosecutors for alleged involvement in “transferring and aiding the arrival of a (non-Muslim) journalist.”

The journalist, who is an American citizen, has also had his case forwarded to prosecutors so they can “take the necessary procedures against him in compliance with the applied laws,” according to Saudi Press Agency, which did not give the journalist’s identity.

Gulf states refused to increase oil production despite a nudge from US President Joe Biden. Oil prices topped $100 per barrel after the snub by Saudi Arabia and its gulf allies. Palki Sharma recaps Biden's West Asia misfire.

Gravitas: Oil rises after Biden's West Asia trip

US President Joe Biden's administration has asked a US judge for 60-day extension to decide the matter of sovereign immunity to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the case of murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. US Department of Justice made a filing in district court. The department said that a "decision making process" had been initiated.

“The United States is diligently considering the Court’s inquiry but the process for doing so requires consultation among multiple entities within the Executive Branch with respect to complex issues of international and domestic law,” the filing said.

US government's request has been granted by the court. The request has been filed just days after Biden's return from Saudi Arabia where he met the crown prince along with other leaders.

Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post journalist who was critical of Saudi Arabian regime and of Mohammed bin Salman himself, was murdered in a Saudi consulate in Istanbul. US government's unclassified report said that the crown prince himself ordered the murder. The de facto Saudi ruler denies it.

Saudi Arabian and American sides differed over what discussion took place between Biden and the crown prince.

A Saudi minister told Fox News on Saturday that he "didn't hear that particular phrase" from Biden blaming the crown prince. A Saudi official said that discussion over the Khashoggi case took place in an 'informal' way.

US President Joe Biden's administration has asked a US judge for 60-day extension to decide the matter of sovereign immunity to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the case of murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

(With inputs from agencies) You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. The promises of a politician are fickle in nature. Every politician makes campaign promises that turn out to be bogus, and for US President Joe Biden his 2019 vow to declare Saudi Arabia a "paraiah" due to its human rights record is now one among that long list. He had made this promise after a report by US intelligence services said that the desert country's crown prince and de-facto leader Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) was behind the 2018 killing and dismemberment of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. However, the recent picture of Biden fist-bumping MBS has undermined the leader's strong words.

With the fist bump, the US President has tarnished his long-cultivated reputation as a champion of human rights.

The White House hastily prepared for Biden to make a brief speech. As per AFP, Biden says he brought up the Khashoggi case "at the top" of his conversation with Prince Mohammed, and he was explicit about "what I thought of it at the time and what I think of it now."

"My views on Khashoggi have been absolutely, positively clear, and I have never been quiet about talking about human rights," he said at a press conference.

Biden had earlier said that the trip was made "to promote US interests", which is seen as a likely reference to the need to persuade the top petroleum exporter in the world to increase oil output. Saudi Arabia, one of the largest producers of oil, has joined the growing list of countries importing Russian oil despite Western sanctions.

According to data reviewed by Reuters news agency, the Gulf country imported 647,000 tonnes of Russian oil in the second quarter, i.e., from April to June. In the same period a year ago, Saudi imported 320,000 tonnes of oil.

For the full year 2021, Saudi Arabia imported 1.05 million tonnes of Russian fuel oil, Reuters said citing the data obtained through Refinitiv Eikon ship tracking.

The kingdom’s reliance on Russian oil is at odds with their Western allies who have been seeking to choke the Russian treasury through its sanctions, even as Vladimir Putin continues to fund his war with oil and gas for cheap prices.

"Saudi Arabia has indeed been ramping up imports of Russian fuel oils as there are no sanctions preventing this from happening," Peter La Cour, an oil analyst at Energy Aspects, told Bloomberg.

"Russian fuel oil is the cheapest barrel available to fuel Saudi summer power generation demand and makes economic sense."

Apart from Saudi, major buyers of Russian oil have been India and China, who are struggling to control inflation that has shot up due recently after the Russian-Ukraine war.

Saudi has been importing Russian oil through Egypt, accounting for at least 110,000 barrels per day in June. Cairo also imported 70,000 barrels per day from Russia in June, Reuters said.

This development comes at a time when US President Joe Biden is on a visit to the kingdom in a bid to restore diplomatic relationships, bolster security and more importantly, increase the global flow of oil.
