Actor-director Sean Penn recently visited the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and met President Volodymyr Zelensky. The actor also presented one of his Oscar trophies to Zelensky. Penn, who is also an activist and a proponent of many political and social causes around the world, has been a passionate supporter of Ukraine in the country's ongoing war against Russia. When the current war broke out in February this year, he was in Ukraine filming a documentary in association with VICE Studios on the Russian aggression against the Eastern European nation. He was forced to flee, the country and joined Ukrainians on the exodus across the Polish border. Penn has earlier called Zelenskyy his "great friend".

Both his trophies came in the Best Actor category. He won his first Oscar for 2003's 'Mystic River' and the second for 2008's 'Milk'. As Penn presented the Oscar to Zelenskyy, he said, "This is for you. It's just a symbolic silly thing, but if I know this is here with you then I'll feel better and stronger for the fight. When you win, bring it back to Malibu. I'll feel much better knowing a piece of me is here." Our true friend Sean Penn came to Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that he is ready to have “genuine peace talks” with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin but laid out certain conditions. His shift in stance comes after the West nudged the Ukrainian leader to initiate discussions with Putin to achieve a long-lasting solution to the conflict. Among the conditions set out by Zelensky include returning Ukrainian control over its territories, ensure reparations for destruction and bringing to justice perpetrators of war crimes. However, it is believed that Russia would not agree to the preconditions listed out by the Ukrainian leader and hence the probability of the talks being held is pretty low. The response came in reply to a question by a far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) lawmaker.

€46 billion: The cost of replacing Russian gas for Germany

Germany faces the possibility of facing a €46 billion ($45.4 billion) hit for replacing Russian gas with other alternatives, according to a response by Germany’s economic affairs ministry in the parliament. “The amount of the (expected) costs associated with the substitution of Russian gas depends largely on the development of gas prices. Of particular importance in this connection are the volatile gas prices on the spot market, where parts of the required quantities have to be procured. Against this background, the federal government currently estimates the costs at around 46 billion euros,” it said.

The German economic ministry said that the share of Russian gas will be substituted by higher deliveries from Norway and increasing Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) imports from other countries in Europe. The ministry did not specify the names of other countries.
