In a sudden apparent collapse of one of the war's principal front lines, Russia’s Defence Ministry said Saturday that it is pulling back forces from two areas in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region.

Following the significant advances made by Ukrainian soldiers in Kharkiv, Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said the troops would be regrouped from the Balakliya and Izyum areas.

After Ukrainian troops captured the city of Kupiansk further north, the power supply of thousands of Russian troops was abruptly cut off.

Since bursting through the frontline earlier this week, Ukrainian forces have recaptured dozens of towns and villages held by Russia for months.

Russia's state-run TASS news agency quoted Russia's defence ministry as saying, "To achieve the stated goals of the Special Military Operation for the liberation of Donbas, it was decided to regroup the Russian troops located in the districts of Balakliia and Izium for the purpose of increasing efforts in the Donetsk direction."

Marking Russia's biggest battlefield defeat since its forces were forced to abandon their assault on the capital Kyiv in March, the claim of pullback to concentrate on Donetsk is similar to the justification given by Kremlin for Ukraine's capital.

Highlighting that at least 30 settlements had been liberated in the Kharkiv region during the advance of recent days, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky applauded the "very sharp and rapid" advance.

According to experts, the picture of grapes posted by Zelensky's chief of staff on social media was an indirect confirmation as the word "Izium" means "raisin" in Ukrainian and Russian.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday (September 7) reported "good news" from the front near Kharkiv in the east, saying some settlements had been recaptured. Both sides have reported heavy fighting in the region. During the evening video address, Zelensky thanked Ukrainian artillery troops for "successful strikes" against the Russian forces in the south of Ukraine. Zelensky said, "This week we have good news from Kharkiv region" and "now is not the right time to name those settlements, where the Ukrainian flag has returned". According to the mayor of the city, Russian forces carried out two missile strikes in Kharkiv overnight. Ihor Terekhov posted on Telegram, saying that rockets hit the neighbourhoods of Saltovskoye and Kholodnogorsk at around midnight local time. As per the US-based think tank, The Institute for the Study of War, Ukraine has retaken 400 sq km of territory in the east of the Kharkiv region. After doing the latest assessment of the ground situation, the group said that, on September 7, the Ukrainian forces "likely used tactical surprise to advance at least 20km into Russian-held territory". The group also states that Ukraine was "likely exploiting Russian force reallocation" to the south to "conduct an opportunistic yet highly effective counteroffensive" to the northwest of the city of Izyum. The report further added that Russia had been forced to shift its focus on its forces in the south because of Ukraine's ongoing operations in the Kherson region. Of late, Ukraine has been waging a counter-offensive in the south of the country since last week, where it also claimed to recapture several villages. Kharkiv region has been partly occupied by Russian troops since the start of the invasion launched on February 24. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a combative speech on Wednesday (September 7) to an economic forum that Russia would not lose what he calls its "special military operation" in Ukraine. Putin said all Russia's actions were designed to strengthen the country's sovereignty and were aimed at "helping people" living in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. Putin said, "We have not lost anything and will not lose anything. In terms of what we have gained, I can say that the main gain has been the strengthening of our sovereignty." Putin conceded, however, that Moscow's decision to send troops into Ukraine had created a "certain polarisation, both in the world and within the country." According to a US Intelligence finding, the Russian Ministry of Defense is apparently in the process of purchasing millions of rockets and artillery shells from North Korea for the ongoing war against Ukraine, news agency The Associated Press reported. While speaking on the condition of anonymity, a US official told the agency on Monday that Moscow's move shows that "the Russian military continues to suffer from severe supply shortages in Ukraine, due in part to export controls and sanctions." Recently, the Biden administration confirmed that the Russian military in August took delivery of Iranian-manufactured drones for the Russia-Ukraine war. The White House also said that Russia faced technical problems with Iranian-made drones, which were said to be acquired in August. 'Make love, not war': Russian-born man and Ukrainian woman tie knot in India

While WION takes utmost care to accurately report this developing news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos. Amid the Russia-Ukraine war, reports have emerged that unknown Ukrainian hackers created fake accounts of attractive women to trick Russian soldiers into sending them photos, the Financial Times reported. The hackers then reportedly passed the images to the Ukrainian military. FT quoted Nikita Knysh, a 30-year-old IT professional from Kharkiv, who opened up about his journey of joining Ukraine's resistance when the Russian invasion began in February. Knysh told the FT that he went to the Kharkiv office of his old employer, the Security Services of Ukraine (SBU) and asked for an assignment in order to help his nation. But the fighting had left the city in chaos. He eventually created a team with other hackers and founded a group nicknamed Hackyourmom. He recruited other hackers and founded a group nicknamed Hackyourmom, which now consists of 30 hackers from across the country, he told the FT. Knysh last month said the group of hackers used fake accounts pretending to be attractive women to trick the Russian soldiers in Melitopol. There apparently used several social media platforms, including Telegram. "The Russians, they always want to f**k. They send [a] lot of s**t to 'girls,' to prove that they are warriors," Knysh told the FT. The hackers were trying to get images of the soldiers. FT report mentioned one of the instances when the Russian soldiers sent pictures. After analysing the image, the hackers could identify that they had been taken from a remote Russian military base, which was said to be closer to occupied Melitopol in southern Ukraine. The report clearly mentioned that all the claims can not be verified but when the Financial Times spoke to government officials and fellow hackers, it learned that photographs, videos and log files backed up some of his assertions. Using fake profiles of women, Ukrainian hackers duped Russian soldiers to help military: Report

Ukraine's power plants operator said on Monday that the last working reactor of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been switched off from the grid.

According to a statement issued by Energoatom, "Power unit (reactor) No. 6 was shut down and disconnected from the grid" because of a fire that was "triggered because of shelling".

Ukraine's state nuclear company had previously announced that two officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency are expected to stay at the Russian-occupied plant on a "permanent basis."

After transmission lines were cut, Zaporizhzhia, which is the largest nuclear plant in Europe, was severed from the national grid for the first time in its history.

With Kyiv and Moscow trading blame, the plant's territory has been regularly shelled over the past month.

Accusing Russia of basing troops and military equipment at the power station, Ukraine said reactors five and six remain in use but are currently disconnected from the grid.

Claiming to destroy 20 Ukrainian vessels and causing others to scatter and call off the attack, Russia said its forces foiled the attack with strikes from military helicopters and fighter jets.

According to the International Red Cross, the shelling has prompted fears of a radiation disaster that could cause a major humanitarian crisis.

Amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, the IAEA is not the only international organisation seeking to locate staff permanently in the country.

In order to gather evidence amid widespread reports of atrocities, International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim Khan has visited Ukraine three times and set up an office in the country and sent investigators into a conflict zone.

Ukraine war: Key takeaways from IAEA's visit to Russia-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant

A team of UN inspectors visited Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia atomic plant complex on Thursday (September 1) to assess the risk of a radiation disaster at the plant.

The support assistance mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) led by Director General Rafael Grossi reached the facility around 3:00 pm (local time).

Russian agencies quoted Grossi as saying that the team "saw what needed to see" at Zaporizhzhia.

"I think we were able in these few hours to put together a lot, a lot of information. The key things I needed to see I saw, and your explanations were very clear," Rafael Grossi told Russian media.

The team arrived on the day when there was shelling near the site. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) also warned that the consequences of a strike on the facility could be "catastrophic".

Many Ukrainians will have to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder due to the war. Some are turning to humor as a means of dealing with the horrors of conflict.

Russia is trying to get Ukraine into fresh talks to buy time to regroup so it can launch a fresh offensive, a Ukraine presidential adviser told AFP Monday.

For weeks now, the Kremlin has been "trying to convince Ukraine to enter into negotiations", Mykhaylo Podolyak told AFP, as the sixth month of the war draws to a close.

During such talks, Moscow wanted to "freeze the conflict while preserving the status quo in the occupied Ukrainian territories", he added.

Russia "sends its proposals via various intermediaries", he said, without naming them, as Kyiv currently has no political contact with Russia.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who met Russian leader Vladimir Putin at the beginning of August, has on several occasions said he is ready to act as an intermediary.

Erdogan visited Ukraine on Friday for the first time in six months.

Ukraine's position was that, in fact, Moscow did not really want serious peace talks, said Podolyak. Instead, he said, they were trying to get "an operation pause for its army" before launching a fresh offensive.

Kyiv has rejected any negotiated solution for Ukrainian territories under Russian occupation. It wants to recapture that territory, as well as territory held by Russian separatists in the east -- and Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.

"All other scenarios... only represent a dangerous operational pause before a new round of war," said Podolyak.

"Ukrainians are going to resist as long as it takes," he added.

"It's an existential war, we don't have any other solution. To abandon the fight means not only the destruction of the Ukrainian state, but also that of all its civilians."

The first talks between the two sides in the early weeks of the war did not produce any concrete results.

The report mentioned that benchmark futures rose toward 300 euros a megawatt hour. The electricity and coal prices also surge to fresh records.

The recent developments show that the Europeans are preparing for a difficult winter without gas supplies from Russia. It is part of the fallout from the war in Ukraine, which started after Russia announced the invasion of its neighbouring country on February 24.

Since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war, the United States sent multiple aid packages to Kyiv to bolster Ukraine's offensive and support its defence against Moscow's forces. In the recent aid, US Defense Department on Friday (August 19) announced a new $775 million arms package for Ukraine. The US has already sent a range of advanced weapons, precision missiles, anti-armour weaponry, surveillance drones, etc. But Moscow slams the West for supplying military aid and weapons to Ukraine, saying that the West is fanning the war. While speaking to reporters on the condition of anonymity, the official said, "You are seeing a complete and total lack of progress by the Russians on the battlefield." What does the new package include? This is the 19th package since the war began on February 24. The latest package includes rockets for the Himars systems used to strike the Russian depots and air-to-ground HARM missiles that home in on radar installations. It also included 15 Scan Eagle surveillance drones, 1,000 Javelin anti-armour weapons, 1,500 TOW anti-armour missiles, and fresh artillery and artillery ammunition. A Ukrainian government official told US-based NBC News that pro-Ukraine saboteurs were involved in the series of explosions that rocked Russian military sites in Crimea in recent days. Military depots and airbases in the annexed peninsula were hit by a series of blasts over the past week. This also showed how Ukraine's striking capability has changed and now Kyiv can strike deep behind enemy lines. This new development might change the dynamics of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Pro-Ukraine saboteurs played a role in blasts at Russian military sites: Report

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on Friday (August 19) and warned that the shelling of the Russia-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine could eventually lead to a large-scale disaster.

For the unversed, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is located near the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula. It has six of Ukraine's 15 reactors and is capable of supplying power for four million homes.

Zaporizhzhia NPP is Europe's largest nuclear power plant, which was captured by Russia in March, but is still run by Ukrainian technicians.

Shelling of Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant by Ukraine raises risk of 'catastrophe': Putin

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Friday (August 19) said that the Russia-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station not be cut off from Ukraine's grid.

During his crucial visit to the port of Odessa in southern Ukraine, the UN Secretary-General said, "Obviously, the electricity from Zaporizhzhia is Ukrainian electricity... This principle must be fully respected."

His statement comes after Ukraine reported that Russia was planning to switch off the functioning power blocks at the Zaporizhzhia plant. Ukraine's state nuclear company Energoatom said on Friday that Russian forces are planning to disconnect them from the Ukrainian power grid.

The energy operator said: "There is information that Russian occupying troops are planning to shut off the reactors and switch them from the output lines of the Ukrainian energy system."

Accusing Moscow, Ukraine claimed that Russia will soon cut electricity produced in Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. But Guterres said that the electricity generated at Zaporizhzhia belonged to Ukraine and demanded that the principle be "fully respected".

Erdogan says Turkey stands 'on the side of Ukraine', warns of 'another' Chernobyl

Disclaimer: A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While WION takes utmost care to accurately report this developing news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos. Ukraine's foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba alleged that the Russian crude oil, India has been importing has "Ukrainian blood" even as he hoped for more support from New Delhi. Speaking to a select group of journalists from South and South-East Asia virtually, the foreign minister claimed, "When India purchases Russian crude oil with high discounts from Russia, they have to understand this discount is paid with Ukrainian blood." "Ukrainian killed, tortured, raped people with destroyed cities and towns. Every barrel of Russian crude oil delivered to India has a good portion of Ukrainian blood in it," he further said. While India has progressively increased its import of Russian crude oil since February, it is still less than the energy Europe imports from Russia. It was in February, that Russia invaded Ukraine, something that not only impacted Europe but also global food security. The foreign minister said that "two democracies, theoretically, have to stand by each other. However, yes, we know, that India is buying Russian crude oil. We are not surprised by that." He alleged, "Throughout human history, in every conflict, every war, there are those who suffer from the war, there are those who make money from the war." While there hasn't been any reaction by New Delhi over the comments by minister Kuleba, external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar has several times pointed to how Europe continues to import energy from Russia. In June, at the Bratislava Forum on foreign policy, he questioned, "Is buying Russian gas not funding the war? It’s only Indian money and oil coming to India that funds it, but not the gas coming to Europe?" The Ukrainian foreign minister, in his response, hoped to build "very open relations with India" and that his country "expected stronger practical support from India to Ukraine under the current circumstances."
