Governor of Russia’s Belgorod region which borders Ukraine, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said that on Sunday morning Ukrainian forces shelled the area of the central market in Shebekino.&nbsp;

He added, “According to preliminary information, there are three victims – a woman suffered shrapnel wounds to the neck... Two other men suffered shrapnel wounds to their legs.”

Meanwhile, the governor of Russia’s Bryansk region, which also borders Ukraine, said Ukrainian shelling hit a village and damaged houses and two administrative buildings but that there were no casualties, according to AFP.&nbsp;

<h2>Russia shoots down Ukrainian drones and missiles</h2>

The Russian air defence system shot down a Ukrainian drone in the southern Krasnodar region, on the Black Sea coast, at around 0500 GMT, said Moscow’s defence ministry, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

Furthermore, it also claimed to have shot down three drones over the western Smolensk region, west of Moscow, around 0600 GMT and two more over the region around an hour later.&nbsp;

“An attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out a terrorist attack with two operational-tactical Grom-2 missiles was thwarted,” said the Russian defence ministry in a statement, adding that missiles were shot down over the Dzhankoi region.

The Russian defence ministry on Sunday also said that the country’s air defences had intercepted five United States-made HIMARS shells, an air-launched JDAM bomb and 37 Ukrainian drones over Ukrainian territory in the last 24 hours.

Russia said those interceptions had occurred on the territory where Moscow is fighting what it calls a “special military operation”.&nbsp;

Sergei Aksyonov, the Russia-installed head of Crimea, which was annexed by Moscow in 2014, said that there were no casualties due to the reported attacks.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Temporary flight restriction’ in Russia</h2>

The international airport in the Russian city of Sochi, on the Black Sea coast, delayed 13 flights and cancelled one, following the attack, according to the British newspaper Daily Express.&nbsp;

“On the morning of 1 October, Sochi airport imposed a temporary flight restriction. Six flights were diverted to alternate aerodromes,” said Sochi International Airport in a statement.&nbsp;

AFP also reported a brief closure of the Crimea bridge, which connects the Moscow-annexed peninsula to the Russian mainland, on Sunday, but the reason was not immediately known.&nbsp;

<h2>Ukraine shoots down 16 of 30 Russian drones</h2>

Ukrainian Air Forces, on Sunday (Oct 1) claimed to have shot down 16 out of around 30 drones that Russia launched on Ukraine's territory overnight. The drones were launched from the southern, southeastern and northern directions, said the Ukrainian forces, on Telegram.&nbsp;

Officials also reported an attack in the central Ukrainian Cherkasy region, where one person was reportedly injured.&nbsp;

“At night, the enemy massively attacked our Cherkasy region with attack drones. Unfortunately, there were hits on industrial infrastructure in (the city of) Uman,” said Cherkasy Governor Ihor Taburets.&nbsp;

He added, “As a result, fires broke out in warehouses. In particular, where grain was stored.” Taburets also said that one person was injured.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, a statement by the Ukrainian presidential office also reported damage to civilian infrastructure and warehouses in southern Mykolaiv region and eastern Dnipropetrovsk region.&nbsp;

At least three injured in Russian regions hit by Ukrainian shelling, drones: Moscow

At least 20 people were killed and more than hundreds injured in a blast at a fuel depot&nbsp;in Azerbaijan's Nagorno-Karabakh region on Monday (September 25). This comes as the separatist authorities are in the midst of preparing to hand over the power of the region to Azerbaijan.&nbsp;

The health department said that nearly 300 people have been admitted to hospitals, with dozens of them "still in critical condition".

The Armenian separatist interior ministry, in a statement, said, “There are dead and wounded as a result of an explosion at a fuel depot near the Stepanakert-Askeran road,” adding that the “rescuers and medics are working at the scene”.&nbsp;

This comes as thousands of refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh are leaving the region for Armenia. Yerevan said that several days after the fighting, the first refugees arrived in Armenia on Sunday and 6,650 people have so far entered.

The incident comes as&nbsp;people fleeing the region, with Armenia saying that 13,350 “forcibly displaced persons” entered the country. In a statement, the government also said it would provide accommodation for all those in need.

<h2>US calls Russia ‘unreliable’</h2>

On Sunday (Sept 24), the Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan took a swipe at the long-standing ally Russia after previously criticising Moscow – the traditional power broker in the region – for being too distracted by its own war in Ukraine.&nbsp;

Moscow, which has around 2,000 peacekeepers in the region as well as a military base in Armenia, regards itself as the prime security guarantor.&nbsp;

Pashinyan also spoke about how Armenia’s current foreign security alliances were “ineffective” and “insufficient” after the conflict ended with Armenian-backed separatists agreeing to lay down their arms.

“I do think that Russia has shown that it is not a security partner that can be relied on,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters, on Monday.&nbsp;

Washington has previously criticised Azerbaijan’s military operation and expressed “deep concern” for ethnic Armenians.&nbsp;Senior US&nbsp;officials from President Joe Biden's administration also arrived on Monday (Sept 25) to meet&nbsp;senior Armenian government officials, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

“We do believe there should be an international mission to provide transparency, reassurance and confidence to the residents of Nagorno-Karabakh and the international community that their rights and security will be protected consistent with the public statements that Azerbaijan has made,” said Miller, as quoted by AFP.&nbsp;

<h2>Russia accuses Armenia of trying to sever ties</h2>

After the Armenian PM’s remarks, Russia said, “The leadership in Yerevan is making a huge mistake by deliberately trying to destroy Armenia’s multifaceted and centuries-old ties with Russia, and by holding the country hostage to the geopolitical games of the West.”&nbsp;

The Pashinyan&nbsp;statement also contained “unacceptable attacks on Russia,”&nbsp;said <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/russia-accuses-armenia-of-trying-to-sever-ties-erdogan-meets-azerbaijans-aliyev-639538">Moscow's&nbsp;foreign ministry</a>.&nbsp;

This comes after Russia&nbsp;refused to come to Armenia’s assistance in the latest Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and reportedly argued that Yerevan itself recognised the disputed region as part of Baku.&nbsp;

<h2>Document to unveil war crime</h2>

Law firm Global Rights Compliance is compiling what is expected to be a meticulous document that will unveil instances where the Russian forces deployed hunger as a weapon of warfare.

The document, as per The Guardian, will supply the ICC with compelling evidence that could pave the way for an unprecedented prosecution, potentially implicating Russian President Vladimir Putin himself.

As per Yousuf Khan, a lawyer with the law firm Global Rights Compliance, "The weaponisation of food has taken place in three phases."

<h2>The three phases of starving Ukraine</h2>

Phase 1: Khan claims that the initial phase started at the beginning of the invasion, during which Ukrainian cities were besieged, and food supplies were cut.

As per Khan, their investigation is also focusing on the siege of Mariupol, where food supplies were cut to the city. The document also alleges that humanitarian relief corridors were blocked or bombed to make it impossible for desperate, starving Ukrainians to escape.

Phase 2: In the second phase, a deliberate destruction of food and water supplies and energy sources took place during the fighting.

These objects were described by Khan as "indispensable to the survival of the civilian population." Khan, as per the report, argues that these attacks were "not crimes of result but crimes of intent".

He says, "If you are taking out objects that civilians need, like energy infrastructure in the dead of winter, there is a foreseeability to your actions."

Phase 3: Prevention or restriction of Ukrainian food exports.

"We've seen Russia attack grain facilities on the Danube and engage in muscle flexing on the Black Sea," says Khan.

The two nations have a history of such crimes. According to the Guardian, in 1932-33, the Joseph Stalin Soviet government engineered a famine that killed millions in Ukraine. This came to be known as the Holodomor, or the Great Ukrainian Famine.

In 2018, a UN Security Council resolution condemned the use of starvation as a weapon of war. &nbsp;

"Putin could bear responsibility for having committed the acts directly, jointly with others and/or through others," says the Lawyer.

Over the years, starvation as a war strategy has been used by many. Recent examples include Syria and Tigray, Ethiopia.

Did Russia intentionally starve Ukraine? New war crime dossier to the ICC to provide damning evidence

The 120,000 ethnic Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh will leave for Armenia as they do not want to be a part of Azerbaijan and live in the constant fear of ethnic cleansing, the leader of the breakaway region told Reuters, on Sunday (September 24). Similarly, the Armenian prime minister also said that the possibility of Karabakh Armenians leaving the region is high and that Yerevan was ready to take them.&nbsp;

This comes after Azerbaijan, on Tuesday (Sept 19) launched a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/azerbaijani-forces-strike-armenian-controlled-karabakh-risking-a-fresh-war-in-caucasus-region-637698">military operation</a> against the separatist Armenians, who have claimed part of Karabakh – which is internationally recognised as Azerbaijani territory – as their ancestral homeland.&nbsp;

While Baku has said that it will guarantee their rights if they choose to stay back and integrate the region, Armenians say they fear repression.

<h2>Mass exodus in Nagorno-Karabakh?</h2>

“Our people do not want to live as part of Azerbaijan. Ninety-nine point nine percent prefer to leave our historic lands,” David Babayan, an adviser to Samvel Shahramanyan, the president of the self-styled Republic of Artsakh, told Reuters.&nbsp;

He added, “The fate of our poor people will go down in history as a disgrace and a shame for the Armenian people and for the whole civilised world.”&nbsp;

The military operation which reportedly led to the deaths of over 200 people and wounded 400 others, ended after the Armenians of Karabakh were forced to declare a ceasefire following a lightning 24-hour attack by the much larger Azerbaijani military.

Meanwhile, AFP reported that furious relatives of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/karabakh-forces-begin-giving-up-arms-negotiate-withdrawal-us-delegation-visits-armenia-to-show-support-638929">ethnic Armenians trapped</a> in the breakaway region gathered at the Azerbaijan border to await a medical evacuation.&nbsp;

The Armenian health ministry said 23 ambulances carrying a first batch of “seriously and very seriously wounded citizens,” were on their way to the border, accompanied by medics and Red Cross workers.

The leader of the breakaway region said it was not immediately clear when the population would move down the Lachin corridor which links the territory to Armenia.&nbsp;

The ethnic Armenian authorities also said that Russian peacekeepers will escort the homeless families of Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia if they wish.&nbsp;

“We inform you that families who have become homeless as a result of recent military operations and who have expressed desire to leave the republic will be carried out by Russian peacekeepers,” said the authorities on Facebook.&nbsp;

It added, “The government will soon provide information about the transfer of other population groups.”&nbsp;

If a mass exodus were to take place, it could change the delicate balance of power in the South Caucasus region where countries like Russia, the United States, Turkey and Iran are jostling for influence. Notably, the region is home to several oil and gas pipelines and home to people of multiple ethnicities.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Danger of ethnic cleansing’</h2>

As the Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan continues to face calls for resignation, he said that Yerevan is ready to accept all ethnic Armenian compatriots from Nagorno-Karabakh. “The Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh still face the danger of ethnic cleansing,” said Pashinyan, during a national address, as per TASS.&nbsp;

He added, “If real living conditions are not created for the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh in their homes and effective mechanisms of protection against ethnic cleansing, then the likelihood is increasing that the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh will see expulsion from their homeland as the only way out.”

Days, after Washington said it sent delegates to Armenia, the Turkish presidency, on Sunday (Sept 24), reported that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet his counterpart Ilham Aliyev in the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan on Monday.&nbsp;

This comes as the two allies have sought to step up efforts to open a land corridor linking Turkey to Azerbaijan’s main territory via Nakhchivan.&nbsp;

Kyiv, on Monday (September 18) said it has filed lawsuits at the World Trade Organization (WTO) against European Union (EU) nations, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, over their ban on Ukrainian grain imports. This comes&nbsp;after Ukrainian officials said that they plan to sue the three neighbouring countries for going against the European Commission’s decision.&nbsp;

<h2>About the lawsuit</h2>

The three Central European countries went against the European Commission’s decision&nbsp;on Friday (Sep 15) which ended restrictions on Ukrainian grains after Poland and Hungary said that they will be implementing their own ban on imports.

The move has since prompted Ukraine to take legal action that officials in Kyiv said they would for nearly a week.&nbsp;Yulia Svyrydenko, first deputy prime minister and economy minister, said Ukraine sees these restrictions as a violation of the EU nations’ international obligations.

“At the same time, we hope that these countries will lift their restrictions and we will not have to settle the matter in courts for a long time,” said the deputy PM, adding that Ukrainian exporters “continue to suffer significant losses” over the bans.&nbsp;

The restrictions in question were imposed by the EU back in May, which allowed Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia to ban domestic sales of Ukrainian grains to protect their farmers who held the imports responsible for a drop in prices in local markets.

The dispute over Ukrainian grain imports has led to an awkward diplomatic spat between Kyiv and Warsaw, which is Ukraine’s staunchest ally against Russia. Even after Ukraine filed the lawsuit, Poland said that it would maintain the ban.&nbsp;

This comes after Kyiv had reported recapture of small clutches of land from Russian forces along the southern front and Bakhmut in the eastern Donetsk region.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government&nbsp;announced the dismissal of six deputy defence ministers after Kyiv appointed a new defence minister earlier this month.&nbsp;

In a statement, Ukraine’s ground forces commander Oleksandr Syrskyi, said, “Fierce fighting continues in the area of Bakhmut...As a result of the successful actions of our troops, the enemy’s defence line was broken.”&nbsp;

This comes as Ukrainian troops have reportedly focused their slow-moving counter-offensive which they launched earlier this year to recapture its territory controlled by Moscow.

The efforts have focused in and around the town of Bakhmut, which has seen some of the bloodiest and longest battles of the war.&nbsp;

“Two square kilometres (0.77 square miles) were liberated in the Bakhmut sector,” outgoing Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar told the Ukrainian media, earlier on Monday.&nbsp;

The announcement also came a day Kyiv said its forces had retaken Klishchiivka, a village south of Bakhmut. Ukrainian forces had clawed back 5.2 square kilometres in the south, said Maliar.&nbsp;

She also said that Kyiv’s troops have liberated 51 square kilometres near Bakhmut since the start of the counteroffensive back in June and overall regained more than 260 square km in the south during the counteroffensive. &nbsp;

<h2>Kyiv dismisses six defence ministers</h2>

The Ukrainian government on Monday (Sep 18) dismissed six deputy defence ministers without giving any reason for the decision. Among those dismissed was Maliar, who issued frequent updates on Russia’s war on Ukraine.&nbsp;

She recently came under fire for initially reporting that Ukrainian forces had recaptured Andriivka village near Bakhmut from Russian forces and later admitted that report was inaccurate and that fighting was still raging around the village.&nbsp;

While Andriivka’s capture was announced the next day by Kyiv, Moscow continued to deny losing control of the village.&nbsp;

Rustem Umerov who became Ukraine’s defence minister less than two weeks ago after the dismissal of Oleksii Reznikov, in a Facebook post said, “Rebooting. We (have) started. We continue. (The) Ministry continues to work as usual.”&nbsp;

This comes as the Ukrainian defence ministry had been dodging media allegations of corruption when Reznikov was in charge. A report by the Ukrainska Pravda news site citing unnamed government sources said that all deputy ministers had resigned voluntarily following a request by Umerov and would not be returning to their posts.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian media report also said that the government is in the midst of looking for candidates to replace those dismissed, adding that “a complete overhaul is underway” at the ministry.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian army&nbsp;on Friday (September 15) announced that they have “liberated” the village of Andriivka near the key frontline town of Bakhmut, which was captured by Russia in May. This comes a day after Ukrainian authorities ordered civilians in the Kherson region to evacuate due to regular bombings by Moscow’s army.&nbsp;

The announcement of the recapture of the village of Andriivka was made by the General Staff of Ukraine’s armed forces during his morning report, saying that Russian forces also suffered “significant” casualties and equipment losses.&nbsp;

“In the direction of Bakhmut, the enemy does not stop trying to break through the defence of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the area of Bogdanivka,” said the General Staff, on Facebook.&nbsp;

“In the course of the assault, they liberated Andriivka in Donetsk region, inflicted significant losses on the enemy in terms of manpower and equipment, and entrenched at the occupied frontiers,” it added, while also reporting “partial success” near Klishchiivka village, south of Bakhmut.

Andriivka is around 14 kilometres south of the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, which has seen some of the longest and bloodiest battles during the war.&nbsp;

The announcement also comes a day after Ukraine’s Deputy Defence Minister, Hanna Maliar reported that Andriivka had been brought under Ukrainian control but later backtracked on the saying that the fighting was still raging around the village.

Speaking about the progress on the southern front General Staff spokesman Andriy Kovaliov said its troops were inflicting substantial losses on the enemy near the village of Verbove in the Zaporizhzhia region.

Ukrainian Governor Oleksandr Prokudin took to Telegram, on Thursday (Sep 14) and said, “The Kherson Regional Defence Council has decided to compulsorily evacuate families with children from areas under constant enemy fire.”&nbsp;

The Ukrainian official indicated that Kherson’s regional authorities were preparing for “emergency situations” ahead of winter regarding electricity supplies. Last year, Russia allegedly carried out massive strikes against the war-torn country’s infrastructure which plunged civilians into the cold and dark during sub-zero conditions.&nbsp;

The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence, on Friday (September 15) said that a Ukrainian strike on Sevastopol naval base earlier this week inflicted “catastrophic damage” to a Russian submarine and destroyed a landing ship.&nbsp;

According to the British MoD, the Ukrainian attack on Wednesday (September 13) on the Sevmorzavod shipyard hit landing ship Minsk and Kilo 636.3-class submarine Rostov-na-Donu as the vessels were undergoing maintenance in dry docks.&nbsp;

“Despite the Russian Ministry of Defence downplaying the damage to the vessels, open-source evidence indicates the Minsk has almost certainly been functionally destroyed, while the Rostov has likely suffered catastrophic damage,” said the British MoD.&nbsp;

The British defence officials also said that it would take hundreds of millions of dollars and many years to fix the submarine, not to mention the “realistic possibility that the complex task of removing the wreckage from the dry docks will place them out of use for many months.”&nbsp;

The United Kingdom on Monday accused the Russian military of targeting a civilian cargo ship in the Black Sea with "multiple missiles". The attack reportedly happened last month, on August 24th.

The information was revealed by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Britain's parliament during an update on the G20 summit he attended in New Delhi.

Sunak's comments, as per Reuters, are the first time an official has commented on a ship being targeted since Ukraine began efforts to allow vessels stranded in the Odesa port since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war.

"Thanks to declassified intelligence, we know the Russian military targeted a civilian cargo ship in the Black Sea with multiple missiles on the 24th of August," said Sunak.

As per the intelligence, as quoted by AFP, the intended target was a Liberian-flagged cargo ship berthed in port.

Russia reportedly fired two "Kalibr" missiles from a Black Sea Fleet missile carrier, towards the southern Ukrainian port of Odessa.

"Despite its failure, this is a clear demonstration of Russia's continuing attempts to choke Ukraine's economy,"&nbsp;the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said in a statement.

"Putin is trying to win a war he will not win, and these attacks show just how desperate he is," said Foreign Secretary James Cleverly in a statement.

The ban, which was designed to ease excess supply and is set to expire Friday (Sep 15), did not affect the transit of Ukrainian grain for export elsewhere.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said he has requested that the European Commission extend its ban on Ukrainian grain or else “we will do it ourselves because we cannot allow for a deregulation of the market.”&nbsp;

This comes as the ruling conservative Law and Justice party has sought to attract farmer voters for its campaign and said that the cheaper Ukrainian grain makes domestic production unprofitable.&nbsp;

But it is not just Warsaw that wants the ban extended, as the five central European countries have sought the extension of the ban on Ukrainian grain until the end of the year, said the Polish agriculture minister Robert Telus, last month.&nbsp;

He also said that the five countries’ agriculture ministers have also supported the call for an extension of the ban while supporting grain transit subsidies.&nbsp;

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, on Saturday, said that Russia is sticking to its demands to rejoin the grain deal and rejected the UN’s proposal that a Luxembourg-based subsidiary of Rosselkhozbank could immediately apply to SWIFT to “effectively enable access” for the bank within 30 days.&nbsp;

Romania on Saturday (September 9) said that new fragments of a drone similar to those used by the Russian military were found on the NATO member’s territory across the border from Ukraine. The Romanian president called the incident unacceptable and said he had informed the NATO chief about the same who reiterated his support for Bucharest.&nbsp;

<h2>What did Romania find?</h2>

Romania&nbsp;said that its soldiers found fragments of a drone “similar to those used by the Russian Army”.

The defence ministry said the country’s naval forces were deployed after local officials alerted them to suspected drone fragments discovered 2.5 kilometres southeast of the village of Plauru.&nbsp;

The village is across the Danube river and from the Ukrainian port of Izmail. “In the search, fragments of a drone similar to those used by the Russian army were discovered,” said the Romanian defence ministry, in a statement.

Finding of the fragments also comes days after reported drone debris was disovered in that area some kilometres away from Saturday’s find.&nbsp;

The fragments have since been picked up for analysis, the statement added. Notably, this is the second suspected Russian drone piece found in Romanian territory this week.&nbsp;

<h2>Romanian president talks to NATO chief</h2>

President Klaus Iohannis said that he had informed NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg about the drone pieces and the latter reiterated the United States-led military alliance’s complete solidarity with Romania.

“The identification by Romanian authorities on Romanian territory near the border with Ukraine of new drone fragments...indicates an unacceptable breach occurred of the air space of Romania, a NATO state, with real risks to the security of Romanian citizens in the area,” said Iohannis.&nbsp;

Earlier this week, the US State Department said it would rotate additional F-16 fighter jets to bolster NATO’s air policing mission in Romania.&nbsp;

The first discovery of possible drone debris came on Wednesday (Sep 6) after Ukraine alleged on Monday that drones detonated in Romania during an overnight Russian air strike on Izmail. The NATO member initially denied the reports before saying that they found pieces on Wednesday.

Romania finds suspected Russian drone fragments on its territory near Ukraine border

The use of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-what-are-cluster-bombs-which-us-is-set-to-provide-to-ukraine-why-it-is-facing-opposition-613067">cluster munitions</a> has led to the death or injuries of&nbsp;more than 1,000 people. Casualties by the bomb rose eightfold last year due to their use in the Russia-Ukraine war, said the Cluster Munition Coalition (CMC), in its annual report on Tuesday (September 5).

This comes months after the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/several-nations-rights-groups-and-un-oppose-us-move-to-send-cluster-bombs-to-ukraine-613459">United States received criticism</a> from its allies in Europe, the United Nations, and international organisations for sending the controversial cluster munitions to Ukraine for the first time since the Russian invasion, and amid Kyiv’s counteroffensive.&nbsp;

Russia has “extensively” been using cluster bombs from its stockpile and also developed new ones during its “special military operation” in Ukraine, the monitor noted in its 96-page global ‘Cluster Munition Monitor 2023’ report.

<h2>Highest number of deaths due to cluster bombs since 2008</h2>

According to the report, the deaths caused by cluster munitions were the highest since the 2008 ban on the bombs. However, the US and Ukraine, along with countries like China and Russia, are not a part of a treaty joined by more than 100 countries that enforces the restriction.&nbsp;

The report by the CMC campaign group recorded some 353 deaths due to cluster munitions which is the most since the group began compiling its annual reports over a decade.

Cluster munitions have been widely denounced for killing and maiming civilians as they typically release large numbers of smaller bomblets that had hit targets indiscriminately over a wide area, threatening civilians.&nbsp;

Not to mention the small bomblets which do not explode when deployed and can pose a danger for years after a conflict ends. People who do survive the attack suffer severe injuries from blasts and burns that can result in life-long wounds which require medical attention.&nbsp;

“It’s unconscionable that civilians are still dying and being wounded from cluster munitions 15 years after these weapons were prohibited,” said Mary Wareham from Human Rights Watch (HRW), during a press conference in Geneva.

The report also noted that 95 per cent of cluster munition-related casualties last year were civilians and three-quarters were children, given that they are often drawn to play with unexploded bomblets which look like shiny balls or batteries.

In 2022, most of the casualties were due to live bombs, said the report, unlike previous years where most deaths were nearly always due to delayed explosion of bomb remnants.&nbsp;

<h2>Use of cluster munitions during Ukraine war</h2>

Out of the 1,172 victims last year, Ukraine – which had not registered any cluster munition casualties for several years – recorded 916 deaths and injuries, nearly all of them involving civilians, said the CMC campaign group.&nbsp;

“The vast majority of the cluster munition rocket missile and artillery attacks in Ukraine…have been conducted by Russian forces,” said Wareham, who also participated in the report. She added, “That is I think the major reason for the uptick in civilian casualties.”&nbsp;

Ukraine has reported a total of 890 casualties – 294 deaths and 596 injuries – due to attacks using cluster munitions, said the monitor.&nbsp;

Russia has&nbsp;“repeatedly” used cluster munitions, said the CMC but it also noted&nbsp;that Ukraine has also deployed the controversial bomb but to a “lesser extent”. However, given that the data is from last year, it does not include Ukraine’s use of cluster bombs provided by the US this year.&nbsp;

“Ukrainian forces have also used cluster munitions, resulting in civilian casualties,” said the report. However, Kyiv has maintained that it only uses the cluster munition against Russian troops at the front line while Moscow has denied using them at all but has threatened to do so.&nbsp;

Russian officials after the <a>US’ announcement </a>have <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/moscow-blames-the-west-kyiv-for-russian-journalists-death-in-ukraine-vows-response-618532">repeatedly accused</a> Ukraine of using cluster munitions against civilians. However, the number could be higher.&nbsp;

Loren Persi, a co-author of the report, said that many casualties in Ukraine might have gone unrecorded, suggesting that there were at least 51 cluster munition attacks in 2022 where casualties were not recorded.

<h2>What about other conflicts?</h2>

The monitor also documented the first known use of cluster bombs in countries like Myanmar last year. The report also accused <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/myanmars-junta-will-likely-hold-elections-in-2025-report-632606">Myanmar military</a> and Syrian government forces of using cluster munitions and causing civilian harm.&nbsp;

Cluster munitions were also used in countries like Azerbaijan, Iraq, Laos, Lebanon, and Yemen, according to the CMC report.&nbsp;

These countries are not among those who have joined the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) that prohibits the use, transfer, production and stockpiling of cluster bombs, which has been signed by 112 nations and 12 other signatories.&nbsp;

“The greatest obstacle to countries working to eradicate cluster munitions are governments that are unwilling to join the convention and that undermine its principles by using or transferring the weapon,” said Wareham.&nbsp;

This was after the HRW, in a statement, noted that at least 21 nations, including those in the West who support Ukraine’s war effort, criticised the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions-blogs/cluster-bombs-for-ukraine-highlight-us-aversion-to-international-treaties-618749">US government’s decision</a> to transfer cluster bombs.&nbsp;

During the two-week Northern Coasts exercise, the countries will practise amphibious operations and strikes from sea to land, reported Reuters. “We are sending a clear message of vigilance to Russia: Not on our watch,” Vice-Admiral Jan Christian Kaack told reporters in Berlin.&nbsp;

He added, “Credible deterrence must include the ability to attack.” The exercise will also focus on securing the sea routes through the Baltic Sea and will take place off the coasts of Latvia and Estonia.&nbsp;

“Finland and the Baltic states depend to almost 100% on the maritime supply routes through the Baltic Sea,” Kaack noted. He added, “Should the Suwalki Gap be blocked - and this can be done easily as there are only two roads and one railroad line - then we are left with the sea routes only, and that’s where we will then have to make our way through.”

The Suwalki Gap is a 65-kilometre narrow land corridor and the only connection between the Baltic states to Poland and NATO’s main territory in Europe.&nbsp;

Kaack also noted that the upcoming exercise will be the first exercise of this size that the German navy, which is also the biggest navy on the Baltic Sea, will command from its new maritime headquarters in Rostock.&nbsp;

The maritime base recently reached operational readiness and aims to act as a regional maritime headquarters for NATO capable of leading the alliance’s operations in the Baltic Sea in case of a conflict, said the German official.&nbsp;

Oleksandr Kubrakov said Liberia-flagged Anna-Theresa and Marshall Islands-flagged Ocean Courtesy bulk carriers had left the port of Pivdennyi from the “humanitarian corridor” hugging the western Black Sea coast near Romania and Bulgaria.

The Anna-Theresa, according to the Ukrainian official, had been stuck in the Ukrainian port since February 22, 2022, and the Ocean Courtesy from February 16 of the same year.&nbsp;

The Anna-Theresa and Ocean Courtesy were carrying 56,000 metric tons of pig iron and 172,000 tons of iron ore concentrate, respectively, said Kubrakov, on social media.&nbsp;

The Russian FM also said that the West had raised the Ukraine issue in meetings ahead of the summit to which Moscow responded by saying that “the issue is closed for us” and accused the West of undermining international institutions by pushing its own agenda.&nbsp;

Notably, Russia reportedly occupies only parts of the regions it claimed and the unilateral annexation has been recognised by only a handful of countries allied with Russia while the move has largely been condemned by Ukraine and its Western allies as well as three-quarters of UN member states.&nbsp;

The UN agency stated that while some schools have suffered direct hits, others have taken precautionary steps and have closed down as the 18 months of missile and artillery attacks on residential areas across the country continue.

As per the UN agency, this is the fourth consecutive year Ukrainian children are facing disruptions to their education. Before the Russia-Ukraine war, Covid was the reason behind the disruption of their school education.

"Inside Ukraine, attacks on schools have continued unabated, leaving children deeply distressed and without safe spaces to learn," said Regina De Dominicis, UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia.

"Not only has this left Ukraine's children struggling to progress in their education, but they are also struggling to retain what they learnt when their schools were fully functioning," she added.

As per AFP, UNICEF survey data shows around half of Ukraine's teachers have reported a deterioration in their students' abilities, like reading, language and mathematics. They also reported that the children have missed out on the sense of safety and friendships school can provide to those enduring war.

Enrolment data indicates that only about one-third of the children were learning fully in-person, another third were studying through remote, online classes, and the remaining were getting education through a mixed approach.&nbsp;

It also found that two-thirds (or about 66 per cent) of pre-school-age children weren't attending school. In frontline areas, this figure rises to three-fourths or 75 per cent.&nbsp;

Those who have sought refuge outside Ukraine face other uncertainties. More than half the refugee children across seven host countries are not enrolled in schools due to language barriers, difficulty in accessing schools and overstretched education systems.

"Molecular-genetic examinations have been completed as part of the investigation into the plane crash in the Tver region," said Russia's Investigative Committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko.

"According to their results, the identities of all 10 victims were established, they correspond to the list stated in the flight list," she added.

As the multinational companies flocked to leave Russia after the West imposed unprecedented sanctions on Moscow amid its war with Ukraine, the Kremlin has retaliated by seizing some assets from these businesses.&nbsp;

This comes a month after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree, last month, to take control of French yoghurt maker Danone’s Russian subsidiary along with beer company Carlsberg’s stake in a local brewer, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

Van den Brink told reporters that while he would not like to go into the details about why the search for a buyer took longer than expected and called the process “highly complex”.&nbsp;

He added, “We are happy we found a suitable buyer. We believe it is a reliable party...We are happy this process comes to an end and to be able to leave Russia.”

Meanwhile, Arnest Group has provided all 1,800 of Heineken’s employees across seven breweries in Russia with employment guarantees for the next three years as part of the deal.&nbsp;

The Dutch beer maker also said that it removed its Heineken brand from Russia last year while its production of Amstel is to be phased out within six months, adding no other international brands would be licensed in Russia.

“We have now completed our exit from Russia,” said van den Brink. He also said that the deal also has no option to buy the business back.&nbsp;

“As a result of the cluster munition strike, 6 civilians sustained shrapnel wounds,” said Gladkov, in an update after initially reporting four people had been injured. He added, “One victim is in extremely serious condition.”&nbsp;

Russia said that its air defences shot down one drone approaching the capital and another drone near the village of Kupino, in the Belgorod region. Meanwhile, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that the drone was downed by the air defence systems over the Istra district which is some 50 kilometres west from the Kremlin.&nbsp;

“Tonight, air defence forces destroyed a drone on approach to Moscow in the Istrinskii district,” said Sobyanin. He added, “Preliminarily, there were no casualties or damage. Emergency services are working on the site.”&nbsp;

The reported attack forced the suspension of flights in three major airports – Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo – in Moscow, reported TASS.&nbsp;

The second drone, as per Gladkov, was shot down near Kupino. There were immediate reports of damage or casualties in the region due to the drone attack.&nbsp;

Uncertainty persists over Wagner chief's death, Russia to conduct molecular genetic test on remains from crash

"For Christ's sake, guys, take me and finish me already," said Yevgeny Prigozhin in an interview as his stand-off with Russian military leadership and President Vladimir Putin escalated in the spring this year.

As per WSJ, preliminary US government assessments, which are incomplete, suggest that sabotage or a bomb that exploded on the aircraft was behind the crash.

Previously, social media channels close to the mercenary chief claimed that the aircraft carrying Prigozhin was downed by a Russian military anti-aircraft missile.

The Kremlin is yet to offer an explanation for the aircraft crash that happened northwest of Moscow but said that it was conducting an investigation. Russia’s Investigative Committee has reportedly launched a criminal probe into alleged violations of air safety rules. However, official information on the crash or its causes remains scant.

As per LBC, a UK-based publication, relatives of 39-year-old Kristina Raspopova, a flight attendant on board the aircraft who also died, have revealed that the flight was delayed due to "maintenance or some urgent repairs".

Talking to Sky News, former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele said that in an "ironic" twist, there are suggestions that a bomb in a wine crate may be behind the explosion and the subsequent crash.

"That's a kind of ironic end for Putin's former caterer," he added.

<h2>About the new drone</h2>

The “Mohajer-10” is said to be an upgraded version of the “Mohajer-6,” which the officials in the United States have accused Iran of selling to Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine. Iran has since denied these accusations.&nbsp;

According to the official IRNA news agency, the new drone “can fly up to a maximum duration of 24 hours at an altitude of 7,000 metres with an operational range of 2,000 kilometres.”&nbsp;

The payload capacity can reach 300 kilogrammes, double the capacity of the “Mohajer-6” drone allowing it to carry “all kinds of bombs and ammunitions,” IRNA reported.

The unmanned aerial vehicle can also travel at a speed of up to 210 km per hour and is reportedly equipped with enhanced electronic and intelligence systems. Meanwhile, the “Mohajer-6” drone can hold a 150-kg payload and fly for 12 hours.&nbsp;

The previous model also had a lower flight altitude of 5,400 metres and could travel at a speed of 200 km per hour.&nbsp;

<h2>A warning to region arch foes?</h2>

A report by Reuters citing a video released by the Iranian media on Tuesday, which showcased the new drone along with other military hardware, displayed the text saying “prepare your shelters” in both Hebrew and Persian.&nbsp;

The ceremony celebrating the achievements of the country’s defence industry was held in Tehran and was also attended by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. The purported video’s text seemingly reflects simmering tensions between arch-foes Iran and Israel.&nbsp;

As per a report by news agency AFP, Sobyanin did not provide details on damage or the casualties.&nbsp;

The Russian defence ministry confirmed that two Ukrainian drones were downed over the Bryansk region near the Ukrainian border and said that there had been no casualties.

Russia's TASS news agency reported that "Glass damage was recorded on several floors" in a multi-storey residential building in Krasnogorsk."

"Several cars parked near the house were also damaged," it added.

However, it did not specify whether the glass damage was due to the drone strike or not.

<h2>Spate of attacks</h2>

AFP reports that in recent weeks, two drone attacks have been repelled over Moscow's financial district. Each of these attacks caused minor damage to the facades of high-rise buildings.

Earlier, on Monday evening, the Russian defence ministry announced that its military had successfully intercepted and shot down two Ukrainian drones above the Black Sea, around 40 kilometres northwest of the Crimean peninsula.&nbsp;

In its statement, the ministry said, at around 6:50 am (0350 GMT), Kyiv's attempt to carry out an "attack with an aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicle was foiled". It further said that there were no casualties and that the drone was "suppressed by means of electronic warfare".

The drones crashed in Pokrovskoye village in the Odintsovo district southwest of the capital.&nbsp;Previously in May, drones were shot down near the Kremlin.

A Dutch government spokesperson told AFP that Zelensky’s flight landed around midday (1000 GMT). Meanwhile, the Ukrainian president announced his and his wife&nbsp;Olena’s arrival in the Netherlands, on social media and said, “Olena and I arrived in the Netherlands with the team.”

During his surprise visit, Zelensky met with outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte at a Dutch military air base in Eindhoven.

The Ukrainian president on social media also said, “The main issue is F-16 for Ukraine to protect our people from Russian terror. We are getting stronger.” Speaking about the agenda, he said that it includes the Global Peace Summit and bringing Russia to justice.

In recent months, the Netherlands, together with Denmark, has led international efforts to train Ukrainian pilots for F-16 fighter jets ahead of delivering the jets to help counter the Russian air superiority, amid Moscow’s ongoing war in Kyiv.&nbsp;

According to the Ukrainian president, the planes would help strengthen Ukraine’s air defences and help its counter-offensive.&nbsp;

“We are speaking about air defence, because we have the winter ahead of us and we understand more than anyone else in the world what winter without electricity is like,” said Zelensky, in the Netherlands.&nbsp;

<h2>Zelensky’s visit to Denmark</h2>

Hours after the meeting with the Dutch PM in the Netherlands, Zelensky landed at Skrydstrup airbase in southern Denmark, at around 1430 GMT, reported AFP.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian president was greeted by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Defence Minister Jakob Ellemann-Jensen.

Frederiksen reaffirmed support for Ukraine and said it is ready to do so “for as long as necessary.” She also said that Denmark will deliver 19 jets in total, with the first six due to be shipped to Ukraine around New Year.&nbsp;

This will be followed by eight in 2024 and five the following year, she added. “We know that your freedom is our freedom. We also know that you need more” weapons, said Frederiksen during a joint press conference with Zelensky.&nbsp; 
 
The Danish PM said over 70 Ukrainian military officials had arrived in Denmark for training. Ukraine said that it expects several dozens of pilots to be trained but it was not immediately clear how many pilots had arrived in Denmark.

Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar said that military-age citizens are duty bound to update their personal data at draft offices.

"We're all living people, and we all overcome this fear in order to win," stated Deputy Defence Minister.

However, the Ukrainian minister clarified that all those who update their information at drafting centres would not be mobilised automatically. She also said those citizens that do get mobilised would not necessarily end up in a combat zone.

Following the launch of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared a general mobilisation. Reuters reports that military reservists aged 18 to 60 are eligible for conscription under it.

Pledging to stamp this alleged corruption out, Maliar said, "Trust between citizens and (recruiting centres) is important."

"Right now we're taking a step toward establishing this trust," she added, as per comments carried by an official military platform, and&nbsp;reported by Reuters.

This comes as, on Thursday, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree formalising last week's decision to fire all the heads of regional recruitment centres in Ukraine after a nationwide investigation revealed a number of corruption and abuse cases.

"This system should be run by people who know exactly what war is and why cynicism and bribery during war is treason," said Zelensky while signing the decree.

A day after his comments made headlines, Stian Jenssen, a senior NATO official, apologised for saying that Ukraine could give up territory to Russia in exchange for NATO membership and putting an end to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

<h2>The apology</h2>

Speaking to a Norwegian newspaper,&nbsp;Jenssen, the chief of staff to the NATO secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg said that he should not have spoken as simplistically as he did.

He also said that while the alliance members have been discussing ways to bring to an end the war that has already stretched for 18 months, any peace deal would have to be acceptable to Kyiv.

"My statement about this was part of a larger discussion about possible future scenarios in Ukraine, and I shouldn’t have said it that way. It was a mistake," he told the Norwegian newspaper called VG.

Jenssen also stressed that his initial remarks were him just sharing an idea and said "It must be up to Ukraine to decide when and on what terms they want to negotiate".

A day earlier, VG had reported that during a panel debate in Arendal, Jenssen suggested, "I think that a solution could be for Ukraine to give up territory and get NATO&nbsp;membership in return".

Attempting to pacify the situation, a NATO spokesperson earlier said: "We will continue to support Ukraine as long as necessary, and we are committed to achieving a just and lasting peace. The position of the alliance is clear and has not changed."&nbsp;

<h2>No backsies</h2>

As per The Guardian, even as he clarified&nbsp;his comment, Jenssen did not walk back on his suggestion of a land-for-NATO-membership deal.&nbsp;

Instead, the chief of staff said that the military situation at the time and who holds control over which areas will "necessarily have a decisive influence," on serious peace talks whenever they happen.

Kyiv has long advocated for the restoration of its borders, as recognised by the international community before 2014. The war-torn nation is currently involved in a counteroffensive to&nbsp;regain control of significant portions of its land that were taken captive by Russia.

Unhappy with Stoltenberg's close ally for even discussing the land-for-NATO-membership deal in public, Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior adviser to Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said: "Trading territory for a Nato umbrella? It is ridiculous. That means deliberately choosing the defeat of democracy, encouraging a global criminal, preserving the Russian regime, destroying international law and passing the war on to other generations."

"If Putin does not suffer a crushing defeat, the political regime in Russia does not change and war criminals are not punished, the war will definitely return with Russia’s appetite for more," he added.

NATO official apologises for contentious land-for-NATO-membership remark

Latvia’s defence minister, on Tuesday (August 15), ordered the army to help guard the country’s border with Belarus, after a reported 96 attempts by illegal immigrants to enter the country in 24 hours. This also comes amid mounting tensions between the Russian ally and another European Union member nation, Poland, along their shared border.&nbsp;

<h3>Situation at Latvia-Belarus border</h3>

Latvia also recalled Border Guard officers from their holidays on Tuesday to help with patrols. In a statement, the Latvian Border Guard said that it has information about a “possible increase in hybrid threats,” adding that Belarusian authorities were increasingly involved in organising the flow of illegal immigrants.&nbsp;

Notably, Vilnius’ statement echoes similar accusations made by Warsaw in recent weeks which has also accused Minsk and Moscow of organising <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/poland-to-send-more-troops-to-border-with-belarus-accuses-moscow-minsk-of-organising-new-migrant-influx-623538">another migrant influx</a> at their border.&nbsp;

Warsaw is planning to move up to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/poland-to-deploy-around-10000-soldiers-to-border-with-belarus-624520">10,000 additional troops</a> to the border with Belarus to support the Border Guard, said Poland’s Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak, on Thursday (August 10).&nbsp;

Earlier this month, Polish Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Wasik accused Belarus and Russia of organising another migrant influx at their border. “We’re talking about an operation organised by the Russian and Belarusian secret services that is getting more and more intense,” said Wasik.&nbsp;

This comes as Ukraine after its counteroffensive&nbsp;reportedly managed to regain some of its previously Russian-occupied territory and has maintained a significant force in the north.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian PM took to Telegram and said, “At the request of Kharkiv and Chernihiv...we are allocating 911.5 million hryvnias ($24.7 million) for Kharkiv and 363 million ($9.8 million) for Chernihiv to build military engineering and fortification structures.”&nbsp;

The Chernihiv region that borders Russia and Belarus was partially occupied at the beginning of Moscow’s all-out invasion of Kyiv, in February 2022, but it was reportedly later liberated.&nbsp;

This also comes amid mounting tensions between the Russian ally and another European Union member nation, Poland, along their shared border. Situation at Latvia-Belarus border Latvia also recalled Border Guard officers from their holidays on Tuesday to help with patrols. In a statement, the Latvian Border Guard said that it has information about a “possible increase in hybrid threats,” adding that Belarusian authorities were increasingly involved in organising the flow of illegal immigrants. Notably, Vilnius’ statement echoes similar accusations made by Warsaw in recent weeks which has also accused Minsk and Moscow of organising another migrant influx at their border. This comes as EU member nations – Latvia, Lithuania and Poland – which share a border with Belarus, have been increasingly worried about border crossings since hundreds of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group members were sent to Minsk at the invitation of President Alexander Lukashenko. Poland’s accusations against Belarus Poland has been ramping up security along its border with Belarus – a close ally of Russia – after Wagner sent its fighters to Minsk in exile following their chief Yevgeny Prigozhin’s aborted mutiny in Russia. Warsaw is planning to move up to 10,000 additional troops to the border with Belarus to support the Border Guard, said Poland’s Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak, on Thursday (August 10). Earlier this month, Polish Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Wasik accused Belarus and Russia of organising another migrant influx at their border. “We’re talking about an operation organised by the Russian and Belarusian secret services that is getting more and more intense,” said Wasik. Similar accusations were made against Minsk and Moscow starting in 2021 when tens of thousands of migrants and refugees crossed or attempted to cross into Poland from neighbouring Belarus. Latvia and Lithuania also faced an immigration crisis around that time, when thousands of people sought to enter the three EU countries. Ukraine pours millions into fortifying border with Russia, Belarus Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, on Tuesday (August 16), also announced that the country will build new fortifications and military infrastructure in northeast regions that border Russia and Belarus. This comes as Ukraine after its counteroffensive reportedly managed to regain some of its previously Russian-occupied territory and has maintained a significant force in the north. The Ukrainian PM took to Telegram and said, “At the request of Kharkiv and Chernihiv...we are allocating 911.5 million hryvnias ($24.7 million) for Kharkiv and 363 million ($9.8 million) for Chernihiv to build military engineering and fortification structures.” The Chernihiv region that borders Russia and Belarus was partially occupied at the beginning of Moscow’s all-out invasion of Kyiv, in February 2022, but it was reportedly later liberated.
