Expressing concerns over the escalating situation in West Asia, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said that India has been in regular touch with both Israel and Iran to "advocate constraints" and "enhance communication" in an attempt to resolve the conflict between the two countries.

In his opening remark at the MED Mediterranean Dialogues Conference in Rome, Italy, the Foreign Minister reiterated India's strong condemnation of terrorism, and the abduction of hostages by Hamas, and affirmed support for reaching a ceasefire.

Jaishankar, however, also emphasised the need to abide by international humanitarian law and called large-scale civilian casualties "unacceptable."

"Today I focus my remarks on the conflicts. The situation in the Middle East is obviously deeply concerning, both for what has happened and what may still come. India unequivocally condemns terrorism and hostage-taking. It also regards large-scale civilian casualties in military operations to be unacceptable. International humanitarian law cannot be disregarded in immediate terms. We should all support a ceasefire," EAM Jaishankar said.

Shifting his focus on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the EAM emphasised "serious destabilising consequences" including the challenge faced by the Mediterranean.

He reiterated India's stand on the situation and said that the disputes in this era cannot be settled by war but only through dialogue and diplomacy.

Jaishankar further called for a "closer and stronger" relationship between India and the Mediterranean in the new era of "re-globalising, rebalancing and multi-polarity."

"We are today on the threshold of a new era. It is one of re-globalising, rebalancing and multi-polarity. It is also a more technology-centered future with a premium on the mobility of talent and greener growth. Opportunities in this world are as indivisible as anxieties. A closer and stronger relationship between India and the Mediterranean will serve both of us," he added.

As per the article, the golf carts must be registered by their operators at the town hall, which then has 30 days to approve their use. Rome's Transport Chief Patane told the publication that during these 30 days, the carts were being allowed to operate. “We have had 33 applications and rejected all but one, but at the end of the 30 days they simply apply again and get another 30 days in which they can operate before being rejected again, and so on. The bureaucracy is perverse and we are asking the transport ministry to adjust the law,” Patane said. He pointed out that golf carts operated by hotels for their guests were subjected to another article in the highway code and could not be stopped. “I would like to have a tender to allow about 100 on the roads, but right now there are 350 to 400 and those are just the ones we know about,” the official further said. India on Wednesday called for prompt action against the ones responsible for Singh's death.

The secretary (Consular Passport and Visa Division and Overseas Indian Affairs) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Muktesh Pardeshi raised the matter with Luigi Maria Vignali, Director General for Migratory Policies and Italians Abroad, Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Pardeshi said that the Indian Eembassy in Italy was in touch with Singh's family for consular assistance and repatriation of mortal remains.

The incident was condemned by Italy’s Labour Minister Marina Calderone as an "act of barbarity."

Addressing the Italian parliament, Minister Calderone said, "The Indian agricultural worker who suffered a serious accident in the countryside of Latina and was abandoned in very serious conditions...has died."

As per local media reports, Satnam, approximately 31 years old, was working without legal papers.&nbsp;

He was injured on Monday (June 17) while cutting hay, accidentally severing his arm in a slicing machine.&nbsp;

According to local sources, it was Singh's wife and friends who alerted the police, following which an air ambulance was dispatched to his residence.

The opposition Democratic Party of Italy also criticised the conditions under which Singh was forced to work.

Zverev, 27, suffered a serious ankle injury at the 2022 French Open after falling on the clay of Roland Garros during his semi-final against Rafael Nadal and missed the rest of the season. On Wednesday, however, he was able to dust himself down to defeat Fritz in 90 minutes, firing 20 winners with six aces and not facing a single break point.

Calling artificial intelligence one of "the greatest anthropological challenges of our time", she said that it was "crucial to harness the best ethical and intellectual reflections being developed in this field".

She then expressed confidence that the pontiff's presence would "make a decisive contribution to defining a regulatory, ethical and cultural framework for artificial intelligence", appreciating the Vatican's research into the "practical application of the concept of algorethics, i.e. giving ethics to algorithms".

Earlier this year, the pope had cautioned against the "perverse" threats posed by AI calling for a global treaty to ensure the technology is not being misused.

He published a six-page message where he detailed all the dangers of this technology including disinformation and interference in elections.

The possible traces of the Villa of Augustus were found during excavations at Somma Vesuviana - a place where Augustus was said to have died in the year 14 AD.&nbsp;

Villa of Augustus is the first-century grand estate that was built near Somma Vesuviana, which is a town and commune in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Italy.&nbsp;

The 1930 excavations in the Nola area uncovered a large Roman villa which was interpreted as the Villa of Augustus. Since 2002, it has been subjected to archaeological probes.&nbsp;

The remains of a Roman-era estate, unearthed during the 1930s, were believed to be the long-buried villa, however, probes later revealed that the ruins dated to the second century AD, which means it had been built after Mount Vesuvius had already erupted.&nbsp;

The Japanese researchers conducted excavations in 2023 and uncovered evidence of a building from an earlier period, which was just below the second-century structure.&nbsp;

The researchers believed that the older building was the site where Augustus died.

After a five-year dig in the side of Rome’s Palatine Hill, the archaeologists excavated a deluxe banquet room, which is estimated to date back to around the first or second century BC. The room had a sizable, brightly coloured wall mosaic. 
 
The work, which is estimated to be around 2,300 years old, was part of the larger aristocratic mansion which is near the Roman Forum that has been excavated since 2018. 
 
The mosaic scene, which is five meters long and features depictions of vines, lotus leaves, tridents, trumpets, helmets and mythological marine creatures, was created by using shells, corals, mother of pearl, flecks of marble and shards of precious glass. 
 
The piece was framed using spongy travertine, polychrome crystals and ancient Egyptian blue tiles.

Speaking to CNN, head of the Colosseum Archaeological Park in charge of the site archaeologist Alfonsina Russo said that this discovery is “unmatched” not just because the mosaic has been found completely intact but also because it has celebratory scenes of naval and land battles carved on it. 
 
The intricacy of the carvings of victory on the mosaic has left the team working on the project surprised. Archaeologists have been making efforts to figure out if the delicate and expensive coral branches, which have been used in the display, belonged to the area near the Mediterranean or the Red Sea. 
 
As per the team, a rare bluish glass paste – which has also been used in the design – is likely to belong to the ancient Egyptian city of Alexandria.

“This banquet hall, which measures 25 square meters (270 square feet), is just one space within a ‘domus’ (the Latin word for house) spread on several floors,” said Russo, while speaking to CNN in an interview. 
 
“In ancient times, when powerful noble families inhabited the Palatine Hill, it was customary to use rich decorative elements as a symbol to show off opulence and high social rank,” he added. 
 
The chamber, which has been called a “jewel” by Russo, earlier existed as an outdoor banquet hall overlooking a garden, which most probably was used for entertaining guests during summer.

Pope Francis on Wednesday (Dec 13) made a revelation during an interview about his final resting place stating that he has chosen to be buried in a basilica in Rome than being buried alongside his immediate predecessors in St Peter's Basilica.

"The place is already prepared. I want to be buried in Santa Maria Maggiore," the pontiff, who turns 87 this weekend, told Mexican broadcaster Televisa's N+ streaming service.

He also revealed his plans to visit Belgium in the year 2024 and also hoped to visit his native places Argentina and Polynesia.

The pontiff's decision on his tomb would make him the first pope to be buried outside of the Vatican in over a century.

Before Francis, Leo XIII eschewed a tomb in St Peter's whose remains lie in the basilica of St John the Lateran in Rome. He died in 1903.

Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the four papal basilicas in Rome and one with which Francis said he felt a "special connection".

Francis used to go there on weekends while visiting Rome before becoming pope. Since being elected in 2013, he prayed there before and after taking a trip and also after undergoing surgery.

As per the Vatican News official media outlet, seven popes have previously been laid to rest in the basilica.

Pope Francis, on Wednesday (Nov 29) in his first appearance after calling off a visit to Dubai for the COP28 climate summit, asked an aide to read the main text in his place stating that he was "still not well".

"Dear brothers and sisters good morning and welcome. We will continue with the catechesis, but since I am still not well with this flu and (my) voice is not nice, Monsignor (Filippo) Ciampanelli will read," Francis said at his weekly audience, held indoors in the Vatican's Paul IV hall.

The 86-year-old pontiff, who is also coping with a knee ailment, arrived at his Wednesday audience walking, aided by a cane.

The Vatican said in a statement on Tuesday (Nov 28) that Francis was advised by his doctors to not make the trip to Dubai.

The statement said that the pope was dealing with the effects of influenza and lung inflammation.

''Please continue to pray for the grave situation in Israel and Palestine. Peace, please, peace. I wish for the ongoing truce in Gaza to continue, for all hostages to be released, and for access to necessary humanitarian aid to be allowed. I heard from the parish there (in Gaza). There is a shortage of water, a shortage of bread. People are suffering," he said.

"It is the ordinary people who suffer. It is not those who make war who suffer. We ask now for peace. And let us not forget, speaking of peace, the dear Ukrainian people, who still suffer so much in war. Brothers and sisters, war is always a defeat, everyone loses. Not everyone, there is one group that gains a lot, the arms manufacturers. They gain a lot, thanks to the death of others," he further added.

The Guardian reported an incident where a man dining on his friend's terrace encountered a swarm of these hornets. And despite the valiant efforts of his friends to ward off or kill the bees, one bit him and hurt his leg to the extent that he had to use crutches to walk.

Media reports say that the numbers of Vespa orientalis, an oriental hornet usually found in Africa and Southeast Asia, are growing in the Italian capital.

The reddish-brown hornet was reportedly first detected in Monteverde district of Rome in the year 2021. This was the first time these hornets were spotted since 1950s.

After 2021, the hornets have seemingly invaded the centre of the city and in addition to windows and air conditioning units, the insects are building nests in the crevices of ancient monuments as well.

The city has not come up with an official plan yet to tackle the growing problem. And this has led to increased demand for people who can remove these nests.

Andrea Lunerti, a zoologist and now well-known wasp-buster is witness to this.

“I am receiving so many calls at the moment, from everywhere,” Lunerti told The Guardian.&nbsp;

“People are seeing these big insects flying around – and the nests are huge, sometimes containing between 700 and 1,000.”

The problem is serious. Last week a window cleaner died after falling off his ladder as a hornet swarm attacked him.

The incident was also confirmed by the Federal Aviation Administration which attributed the reported plunge to a pressurization issue.

The clip, which was filmed last month on July 18 by an onlooker Lex Jones, who witnessed the bizarre incident, shows how the woman casually makes her way out of the 18th-century landmark before a guard confronts her.

“There were signs all over saying that’s not allowed,” Jones told newswire Storyful. “I was just like, wow, this is crazy so I started videoing it.”&nbsp;

Italy’s Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano said, “I consider it very serious, unworthy and a sign of great incivility that a tourist defaces one of the most famous places in the world, a historical heritage (site) such as the Colosseum, to carve the name of his fiancée.”
