There, it's been said premenstrual mood swings and anxiety are "key public health issue(s) globally".&nbsp;

Premenstrual symptoms are reported by more than 64 per cent of women globally during each menstrual cycle, reports IANS quoting a recent study.

28.61 per cent of women reported that premenstrual symptoms interfered with their daily activities every time they had a period, and another 34.84 per cent claimed that this happened sometimes.

Secrets and unknown species abound in the waters of Earth's oceans. Among these mysterious species is one worm detected by scientists in 2020. Its iridescent colours reminded the discoverers so much of the king of rock'n'roll that they nicknamed it the "Elvis worm".

The sparkling Peinaleopolynoe&nbsp;were discovered 4,000 metres or 13,000 feet underwater in some of the Pacific ocean's deepest hydrothermal vents.

Because of their shimmering scales, which are reminiscent of the sequined jumpsuits worn by Elvis Presley, they have been referred to as "Elvis worms"&nbsp;for years.

Their name Peinaleopolynoe is derived from the Greek word peinaléos, which means hungry or famished. According to the Guardian, the hungry scale-worms got their name because the first time they were seen, they were gathered around a pile of food that researchers had left on the deep-sea floor as something of an experiment.

Mysteries of the ocean: Iridescent 'Elvis' worms that shimmer found thousands of feet underwater

A new report has shone the light on the stark difference between cardiovascular diseases or heart diseases in men and women.&nbsp;

The American Heart Association (AHA) has released&nbsp;research warning that crucial indicators that a woman has or may develop heart disease in the future are frequently overlooked because they are more subtly displayed than in men.

Even though there is no proof that women develop heart disease later than men, according to the study, women are frequently diagnosed with it later in life than men, which suggests that when treatment begins they are likely in poorer shape and at a more advanced stage.

Daily Mail notes that earlier reports have also alleged that&nbsp;women's medical complaints are frequently not given the same attention as men's, which is a problem that could have dire consequences.

Even though heart disease is the biggest cause of death for women in America, only one-fifth of primary care doctors and 42 per cent of cardiologists believe they can accurately assess a woman's heart health, according to a survey.

The failure of medical professionals to recognise heart attacks in women resulted in a higher mortality rate for women than for males, according to a 2018 British study.

While women are often more concerned about breast cancer, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that they are just as likely as men to die from heart ailments.

In contrast to other, more widely publicised risks like breast cancer, the CDC warns that almost 20 per cent of American women will pass away from heart failure.

Research shows that women heart diseases are often overlooked

We've all had our parents tell us that these devices will be the death of us. Now, new research has provided proof that electronic devices like smartphones, computers, and tablets and the excessive blue light they emit can significantly speed up our ageing process.

PTI quotes Jadwiga Giebultowicz, the senior author of the study and a professor at Oregon State University, as saying&nbsp;"Excessive exposure to blue light from everyday devices, such as TVs, laptops, and phones, may have detrimental effects on a wide range of cells in our body, from skin and fat cells, to sensory neurons."

The research, which was published in the journal Frontiers in Aging, suggests that limiting excessive blue light exposure could be an effective anti-ageing tactic.

Giebultowicz claimed that this study is "the first to show that the levels of specific metabolites -- chemicals that are essential for cells to function correctly -- are altered in fruit flies exposed to blue light."

Explaining the methodology he said that researchers compared the amounts of metabolites in flies exposed to blue light for two weeks to those kept in full darkness to understand why high-energy blue light is responsible for accelerating ageing in fruit flies.

They found that the quantities of metabolites they examined in the cells of fly heads were significantly different after exposure to blue light.&nbsp;The researchers' observations support their earlier results that blue light speeds up ageing by suggesting that the cells are not functioning at their best, which may lead to premature cell death.

According to Giebultowicz, blue light may have adverse effects on humans because the signalling chemicals in flies' and humans' cells are the same.

Since LEDs have become the main illumination not just in display screens, but also in ambient lighting " humans in advanced societies are exposed to blue light through LED lighting during most of their waking hours," he explained.

In the past, studies have connected excessive screen time to illnesses like obesity and psychiatric issues. Scientists will carry out more research to examine the direct impact of blue light on human cells.

Study proves right what our parents have been saying for years 'phones will be the death of us'

A four million-year-old chunk of the Earth's crust, the size of Ireland, has been found floating under Western Australia.

According to the research&nbsp;which was published online on June 17 in the journal Terra Nova, the old crust spans an area of at least 38,610 square miles (100,000 square kilometres) and is buried&nbsp;"Tens of kilometres" underground.

The Earth is 4.54 billion years old and the piece of Earth's crust is 4 billion old which makes it among the oldest on Earth. The rocks of the Canadian Shield, which are located on the eastern shore of Hudson Bay and date back 4.3 billion years, are the oldest, according to Space.

Due to plate tectonics, which continuously stirs up and pushes Earth's crust back into the mantle, the majority of the planet's rocky surface was formed within the last couple of billion years.

Researchers have discovered the crust near Australia's Jack Hills, a site that is also home to small minerals called zircons that date back 4.4 billion years. This makes them the oldest materials on Earth to have been found.

Maximilian Droellner, a doctoral student at Curtin University in Australia and study co-author, said in a statement that the oldest crust like the recently discovered chunk in Western Australia tends to date back around 4 billion years. He said that this suggests that something noteworthy occurred in that period of Earth's history.

Crust almost as old as the planet and thousands of kilometres long found floating under Australia

The&nbsp;emphasis of Generation Z on social issues, healthy living, and moderate alcohol consumption has earned them the nickname "generation sensible." However, therapists assert that because Generation Z is extremely careful about taking chances, they risk missing out on a wealth of life experiences.

Mental health professionals claim that many young people are increasingly choosing to stick with their familiar small circle of friends who have similar interests, where a large portion of their social interaction takes place online. The experts stated that while this may give them more control over some elements of their lives, it may also cause social anxiety if they must contact people in person.

"I'm seeing a disproportionate increase in referrals for social anxiety, professional anxiety, general self-confidence, and relationship issues for this generation when they are confronted with the reality of being in an office, being in a nightclub, being in a pub, or being on a date," said Natalie Phillips, a psychotherapist who works with children and young people aged 11 to 25.&nbsp;

Her remarks followed an academic study that claimed Generation Z claims they drink less than their parents because they feel pressure to excel academically, are more health conscious, and do not want to lose control. The report was published in the British Journal of Sociology.

"I do have the feeling that [this age] are missing out on perhaps making mistakes and the sense of being young," Phillips added. They seem to be extremely advanced in age. Many of the young individuals she interacts with, she continued, have "restricted comfort zones" because they mostly engage with colleagues online or work from home. They also have a limited number of friends who share their viewpoints.

In 2020, 517 Britons who identified as moderate or non-drinkers between the ages of 18 and 25 were polled by academics from the universities of Kent and Leeds. According to seven out of ten respondents, they believe they do not need to drink as frequently because they have more options for pastimes than previous generations.

"I'm seeing a disproportionate increase in referrals for social anxiety, professional anxiety, general self-confidence, and relationship issues for this generation when they are confronted with the reality of being in an office, being in a nightclub, being in a pub, or being on a date," said Natalie Phillips, a psychotherapist who works with children and young people aged 11 to 25. Her remarks followed an academic study that claimed Generation Z claims they drink less than their parents because they feel pressure to excel academically, are more health conscious, and do not want to lose control. The report was published in the British Journal of Sociology. Also Read: WATCH: Multiple times when world leaders took to the dancefloor, why blame Sanna Marin? Gen Z is ‘generation sensible’ & too cautious, risks missing out on life experiences, warn therapists

Seven million years back our ancestors could walk upright. Did that surprise you? We tend to picture the early man as this hunched-up creature, but new evidence suggests that that's not how they were.

A fossil leg bone that was found in Chad more than 20 years ago demonstrated that a creature known as Sahelanthropus tchadensis was an early human ancestor that walked on two feet.&nbsp;

The researchers looked at 23 characteristics of the fossils, which they claim link the ancestor to bipedalism or upright walking and show a closer affinity to humans than apes.

The discovery was reported in the Nature journal.

S.tchadensis was found by a French and Chadian team in the Toros-Menalla region of the Djurab desert, Lake Chad basin in July 2001.

An almost intact, but severely damaged skull was the main discovery; it was nicknamed Toumaï which in the Chadian Daza language means "hope of life".&nbsp;

However, the current discovery was not made by the hope of life skull rather it is based on the examination of a thigh bone and two forearm bones.&nbsp;

“We can conclude from the evidence that we have habitual bipedalism, plus quadrupedal arborealism, which is what is observed for early hominids and then gradually turns into the obligate bipedalism in Homo,” said a co-author of the study, Jean-Renaud Boisserie,&nbsp;from the University of Poitiers.

Other experts, though, have raised scepticism about the study.&nbsp;Prof. Bernard Wood of George Washington University, who was the co-author of a prior study that found Sahelanthropus was not typically bipedal, called the paper "shoddy".

Guardian quotes him as saying "These critically important fossils deserve better treatment than this shoddy paper provides. The study cherrypicks evidence, ignores recent studies that point to different conclusions than the ones the authors try to defend, and it fails to explore other equally, if not more likely, functional interpretations of these fossils.

Seven million year old human bone leads to an amazing discovery

A new report released by the Brookings Institution has found that the average cost of raising a child has grown to over $300,000 in the USA, primarily due to sky-high inflation rates.

A new report released by the Brookings Institution has found that the average cost of raising a child has grown to over $300,000 in the USA, primarily due to sky-high inflation rates. Reportedly, the research showed that the average amount required to raise a child of a middle-income married couple, born in 2015, till he/she is 17 years old or in high school will be $310,605; which comes down to roughly $18,271 per year. The estimates include everything from housing, food, clothing, healthcare, child care, diapers, haircuts, and sports equipment. Moreover, it includes the money spent on learning extracurricular activities and celebrating different childhood milestones. “A lot of people are going to think twice before they have either a first child or a subsequent child because everything is costing more. You also may feel like you have to work more.” said Isabel Sawhill, a senior fellow at the institute. It is pertinent to note that the earlier figure stood at $233,610, as released by the US Department of Agriculture in 2015. According to Brookings Institution, the new calculations used the previous government estimate only, using it as a baseline but also pairing it up with the recent inflation trends. What is the inflation trend in the US? As reported by WION, US has been facing its worst bout of economic slowdown in recent times. The economy has contracted for two successive quarters which suggests that a recession has set in place. Read More: President Biden claims US had ‘zero per cent inflation’ in July; gets trolled by Republicans The inflation rate for the month of July stood at 8.5 per cent, majorly due to a drop in fuel prices. However, if compared to year-on-year numbers, the inflation rate was still touching a 40-year record high and consumers were bearing the brunt of it. In June, the figure stood at 9.1 per cent. Moreover, a recent Bloomberg survey stated that there was a 40 per cent chance that the country will slip into a recession by next year. Gen Z or ‘generation sensible’ risk missing out on life experiences, warn therapists

New research reveals that if everyone followed the Dutch way of life and cycled daily, it would help to avoid more than 700 million tonnes of carbon pollution per year. A quarter of all fuel-related greenhouse gas emissions, which warm the planet, are currently majorly attributed to the transportation sector.The research was published in the journal Communications Earth and Environment.

Automobile passengers account for half of the emissions, and that number is expected to triple by the middle of the century. Governments and businesses have shifted to electric vehicles to decarbonise transportation, with nearly 6.75 million units sold by the year 2021.

Statistics on auto sales are provided. However, the production and ownership costs of a cycle are expected to be challenging to estimate. Using statistical modelling, an international team has generated the world’s first dataset on bicycle ownership. Bicycle production increased faster than car production between 1962 and 2015, with China accounting for more than two-thirds of the 123 million bikes produced in 2015.

The study demonstrated that bicycle ownership was mostly in upper-income and upper-middle-income nations, but these countries had a fair proportion of car ownership as well. However, bicycles were used as a mode of transportation in only 5 per cent&nbsp;of the 60 countries studied.

The researchers said, "Going Dutch" and cycling 2.6 kilometres daily like people do in the Netherlands would save 686 million tonnes, and bring with it associated health benefits due to more exercise and improved air quality. A worldwide pro-bicycle policy and infrastructure development enabled modal shift like the Netherlands and Denmark can lead to significant untapped climate and health benefits," AFP reported.

Lead researcher Gang Liu said that bicycles in the future will play a significant role in controlling carbon emissions. In conversation with AFP, the researcher said that to address such issues, more than technological solutions are needed, such as alternative travel patterns are needed, ride-sharing, and using bicycles to cover short distances.

Following Dutch life and cycling daily can help world save nearly 700 million tonnes of CO2 pollution: Study

It is quite common to find anomalies around the vast universe and a team of researchers have recently discovered 11 undetected ones with seven of them being potential supernova candidates. In the new study, which was published in ‘New Astronomy’ journal, the team said that the anomalies were detected using the ‘nearest neighbour’ method. It involved the use of artificial intelligence which analysed a number of digital images of the Northern sky which were taken around 2018.

The team of researchers comprised of Matvey Kornilov, Associate Professor of the HSE University Faculty of Physics, according to Phys.org. The researchers said in the paper that they benefited from the increase in data over the last few years and were able to successfully identify the anomalies.

Researchers discover 11 undetected space anomalies using ‘nearest neighbour’ method

In a ground-breaking achievement, scientists produced the first "synthetic embryos" in the world without the need for sperm, eggs, or fertilisation. Researchers at the Weizmann Institute in Israel discovered that it was possible to get mouse stem cells to self-assemble into structures that resembled early embryos and had an intestinal tract, a developing brain, and a beating heart. The live constructs, often referred to as synthetic embryos because they are made without fertilised eggs, are anticipated to advance our understanding of how organs and tissues develop throughout the growth of natural embryos in the near future.

The breakthrough, however, may also lessen the use of animals in experiments and eventually open the door to new supplies of cells and tissues for use in human transplants, according to researchers. For instance, a leukaemia patient's skin cells might possibly be changed into bone marrow stem cells to treat their illness. The same team reported how they had created an artificial womb that allowed real mouse embryos to develop outside the uterus for a few days last year. In the most recent study, the same apparatus was used to grow mouse stem cells for more than a week—nearly half the duration of a mouse's gestation.

While some of the cells underwent chemical pretreatment to activate genetic programmes that would cause them to develop into the placenta or yolk sac, other cells naturally underwent organ and other tissue development. While the majority of stem cells failed to develop into structures resembling embryos, 0.5% of them united to create tiny balls that gave rise to unique tissues and organs. The internal structure and cell genetic profiles of the synthetic mouse embryos were 95% identical to those of real mouse embryos. The scientists could detect that the developing organs were useful.

When they first meet you, people notice your smile. When flashing wide-mouthed, eye-crinkling smiles, people want their teeth to be strong, white, and healthy. However, if your teeth aren’t white, they can be with teeth whitening. Though it can harm enamel, leading to cavities and discoloration, toothpaste only gets rid of surface stains. But don’t worry. An innovative hydrogel therapy that disintegrates biofilms that cause cavities and whitens teeth without hurting them has been found by researchers. The research findings were published in the journal ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, as reported by ANI.

Using a toothbrush and flossing every day can help you prevent cavities from developing. However, these techniques don’t work very well, though, to whiten teeth.

Customers frequently use over-the-counter or professional whitening procedures that include blue light and gels containing hydrogen peroxide for improved whitening. This combination causes a chemical reaction that removes stains. The majority of the discolouration is removed by this combination. However, reactive oxygen species are produced which can damage enamel.

Xiaolei Wang and Lan Liao, along with other colleagues, modified titanium oxide nanoparticles for a less harmful tooth whitening procedure. But it still requires high-intensity blue light, which can harm your eyes and skin. In order to develop a safer alternative option that would whiten teeth and also prevent cavities, the team wanted to sort a material activated by the green light.

The researchers mixed copper oxide, nanoparticles, sodium alginate, and bismuth oxychloride nanoparticles into the thick solution. The researchers applied the mixture to the surface of the samples' teeth and sprayed the mix with calcium chloride to create a strong solution, and then a strong hydrogel was created. This was then tested on teeth in a lab that was stained with soy sauce, coffee, tea, blueberry juice, and other substances.

The teeth gradually became whiter after the treatment and green light, and the enamel was unharmed. In the test, 94 per cent of the bacteria in biofilms were killed. This was then tested on rats as well and showed a positive response in preventing cavities.

Hence, as per the researchers, their risk-free, brush-free method safely whitens the teeth and also prevents cavities.

One of the weirdest revelations of today: Not using a brush can help you get whiter teeth

Millions of people throughout the world suffer from baldness, and up until recently, hair implants were the only solution. But now, researchers might have discovered the cure for baldness. Researchers from the University of California found a single chemical in hair follicles that regulates both cell division and cell death. Given that follicles are a source of stem cells, this discovery could not only treat baldness but also aid in significantly reducing the time taken to recover from injuries.

A release by the university explains that the majority of cells in the human body have fixed forms and functions that are established during embryonic development. A blood cell, for instance, cannot transform into a neuron cell, and vice versa.&nbsp;

It goes on to say that stem cells, however, are similar to the empty Scrabble tiles in that they can develop into many kinds of cells. They can even be used to restore damaged tissue or organs due to their flexibility.

Wang added: “In real life, our new research gets us closer to understanding stem cell behavior, so that we can control it and promote wound healing.”

While the stomach and liver can heal themselves after injuries, hair follicles are the only organ in humans that regenerate&nbsp;automatically and regularly, even without injury. This is why Wang’s team focused on them for their research.

The scientists uncovered the mechanism by which a particular protein called TGF-beta regulates the process by which cells in hair follicles, including stem cells, divide and create new cells or plan their own demise, ultimately resulting in the death of the entire hair follicle.

Nobody is absolutely certain as to why follicles self-destruct. According to some theories, it is an inherited feature from animals that shed their fur to survive the hot summer months or to camouflage. If scientists can understand how TGF-beta activates cell division and interacts with other crucial genes, the scientific breakthroughs are endless.

Researchers examining hair may have found a way to cure baldness and regenerate damaged organs

A recent study found that there’s an increase in the proportion of healthy kids who are dieting to reduce their weight. Everybody is so conscious and particular about their weight, and how they look, majorly youngsters. Experts from Oxford University surveyed 34,000 kids on their weight and discovered that the proportion of kids with a healthy body mass index (BMI) has tripled in the previous two decades. In a survey, children were asked if they want to grow, maintain or reduce their weight. Only 5 per cent said they were keen to lose weight when this study began in 1997. But it rose to 14 per cent by the year 2016, Mirror reported.

According to the data, over one in three kids in the United Kingdom is overweight or obese.&nbsp;

Researchers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the United States have developed a new N95 face mask that can not only reduce COVID-19 spread but also kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus upon contact with it. The mask can potentially be worn longer, causing less plastic waste as it does not need to be replaced as frequently.

As reported by PTI, Edmund Palermo, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute said, “We think the work is the first step toward longer-lasting, self-sterilising personal protective equipment, such as the N95 respirator. It may help reduce transmission of airborne pathogens in general."

In research recently published in the journal Applied ACS Materials and Interfaces, the team successfully grafted broad-spectrum antimicrobial polymers onto the polypropylene filters used in N95 face masks. The active filtration layers in N95 masks are very sensitive to chemical modification. It can make them perform worse in terms of filtration, so they essentially no longer perform like N95s. They are made out of polypropylene, which is difficult to chemically modify.

The team, including researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, attached antimicrobial quaternary ammonium polymers to the fibre surfaces of nonwoven polypropylene fabrics using ultraviolet (UV)-initiated grafting. The team used only UV light and acetone in their process, which is widely available, to make it easy to implement.

The process can be applied to already manufactured polypropylene filters, rather than necessitating the development of new ones, the researchers said, as reported by PTI. The team did see a decrease in filtration efficiency when the process was applied directly to the filtration layer of N95 masks, but the solution is straightforward, they said. The user could wear an unaltered N95 mask along with another polypropylene layer with the antimicrobial polymer on top, according to the researchers.

Researchers develop self-sterilising N95 mask that can kill Covid virus

Two years back the pandemic put an end to life as we knew it, millions all over the world were stuck at home, with not much to do. At a time like that most of us turned to the solace of social media, movies,&nbsp;and television. But how much time did we really spend glued to our screens?&nbsp;

As per a Guardian report, a&nbsp;global review of research on this shows that among children screen time during the COVID-19 pandemic increased on average by 80 plus minutes a day. The biggest daily increase was witnessed among the age group of six and ten. However, a "significant" increase was seen among all age groups including adults.

The biggest increases were seen in elementary school students, who added 83 minutes each day. Adults came next, taking 58 minutes, followed by teenagers (ages 11 to 17), taking 55 minutes. The least amount of time spent watching screens—35 minutes—was increased in children under five, yet even this small rise is nevertheless substantial.

89 studies from nations like the UK, US, Australia, France, Chile, and Israel were examined by researchers. With a total sample size of more than 200,000 persons, the investigation specifically examined increases in screen usage before and during the pandemic.

The researchers stated in eClinicalMedicine, a publication of the Lancet Discovery Science journal, "This review found that all age groups increased their total screen time."&nbsp;

"Leisure screen time also increased in all age groups, with primary-aged children reporting the largest increases, followed by adults, young children and adolescents.”

Researchers found a link between screen time and children's poor diets, poor eye health, declining mental health, including anxiety, and behavioural issues like aggression, irritability, and an increase in temper tantrum frequency. This included time spent watching television or using a computer.

The study also found associations between increased screen usage and unfavourable&nbsp;outcomes in adults. These included negative effects on weight gain, fatigue, and physical inactivity as well as negative impacts on diet, weight, eye health, and mental health, including loneliness, depression, and anxiety.

During the Covid pandemic, children spent more time on computers and phones: Study

Pointing out the gaping gender dsicrimination with regards to giving credit to scientific publications, a new study has claimed that women in the scientific field are less likely to get authorship credit for their work than their male counterparts.

The study, published in Nature, said this discrepancy is ubiquitous in all fields, especially female-dominated fields such as health, as well as in male-dominated fields, such as engineering. It said that the gap was particularly evident during the earliest stages of women’s careers.

The researchers further revealed that the gender discrimination was pretty much skewed in patent-related projects where 60 per cent of men are credited even while sharing the work with women counterparts.

The findings were based on an analysis conducted on administrative data on research projects at 52 US colleges and universities between 2013 and 2016.

They matched information about 128,859 scientists to 39,426 journal articles and 7,675 patents, looking at which people who worked on individual projects received credit and which did not.

They said that only 15 out of 100 female graduate students were ever named as authors on documents, compared to 21 out of 100 male graduate students.

“We have known for a long time that women publish and patent at a lower rate than men. But because previous data never showed who participated in the research, no-one knew why,” said study co-author Julia Lane from NYU.

“There were anecdotes – like that of Rosalind Franklin,&nbsp;who was denied authorship&nbsp;in a famous&nbsp;Nature&nbsp;article by James Watson and Francis Crick despite correctly demonstrating the double helix structure of DNA – but there was no evidence,” explained Dr Lane.

About 43 per cent of women surveyed in the study said they had been excluded from a scientific paper to which they had contributed compared to 38 per cent of men.

“Being a woman [means] that quite often you contribute in one way or another to science but unless you shout or make a strong point, our contributions are often underestimated,” one survey respondent reportedly said.

Women less likely to get authorship on scientific publications than men, finds study

A study on ‘Exceptional warming over the Barents area’ studying surface air temperature (SAT) data from Global reanalyses points towards maximum warming over the northern Barents area.&nbsp;

Researchers studied the warming over the past 20–40 years based on new available SAT observations and a quality-controlled comprehensive SAT dataset from the northern archipelagos in the Barents Sea.

They identified a statistically significant record-high annual warming of up to 2.7 °C per decade, with a maximum in autumn of up to 4.0 °C per decade. The researchers said the heating in this region was an “early warning” of what could happen across the rest of the Arctic.

As quoted by The Guardian, Prof Michael Mann, from Pennsylvania State University, US, says, “Sea ice loss and warming in the Barents Sea, in particular, have been isolated in previous work as being especially relevant to changes in winter-time atmospheric circulation that are tied to extreme winter weather events.”&nbsp;

“If this mechanism is valid, and there’s some debate over that, then this is yet another way climate change could be increasing certain types of extreme weather events [and which] isn’t well captured by current models,” he added.

Research points toward exceptional heating in Arctic area

These days, everyone wants to look tall. Those few inches not only help you to stand out in the crowd but also give you confidence. However, these inches come with a cost. As per a recent study, published in the PLOS Genetics open access publication, tall people are at a higher risk of acquiring a variety of health problems such as nerve disorders and neurological diseases.

As per the research, a person’s height, whether tall or short is known to raise their risk for a range of diseases. The study also found new connections between taller heights and a higher risk of peripheral neuropathy, caused by damage to nerves in the extremities as well as bone and skin infections such as foot ulcers or leg ulcers.

Being tall is connected to a higher risk of atrial fibrillation and varicose veins, as well as a lower risk of coronary heart disease, high cholesterol, and blood pressure, according to Sridharan Raghavan of the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Centre.

The experts further said that height could be a previously unknown risk factor for adult diseases in a variety of ways. The researchers, however, added that additional research is needed to fully understand some of these connections and that, in future studies, they might benefit from having a bigger and more diverse international sample.

Tall people face more health risks than short people, claims study

Road traffic noise outside schools can harm primary school children’s attention span and stunt their cognitive development, a new study has shown.

The study, which forms part of the BREATHE project, included 2,680 children between 7 and 10 years of age across 38 schools in Barcelona.

They based their research by measuring the noise coming from the outside before lessons began. This was repeated six months later to calculate an average baseline level of noise pollution at each site.

Using online cognitive tests, the team tested the children’s short-term memory and attentiveness every three months for a year.

The study found that these children with higher average indoor noise levels – defined as above 30 decibels,&nbsp;about the volume of whispering&nbsp;– saw a slower improvement in attentiveness, measured by comparing their performance on tests at the start of the year with those at the end of the year.

It was further found that children exposed to higher average classroom noise levels over the course of the year performed worse than students in quieter classrooms only on the attention test, but not on the working memory tests.

"This finding suggests that noise peaks inside the classroom may be more disruptive to neurodevelopment than average decibel level," said lead researcher Maria Foraster, from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health.

"This is important because it supports the hypothesis that noise characteristics may be more influential than average noise levels, despite the fact that current policies are based solely on average decibels."

"Our study supports the hypothesis that childhood is a vulnerable period during which external stimuli such as noise can affect the rapid process of cognitive development that takes place before adolescence," said co-author Jordi Sunyer.

The origin of the world and its subsequent development has been a keen source of interest for scientists. They have conducted huge number of tests in order to determine the source of life on the planet and it seems that a latest study can hold important answer to the age-old questions.

The study, which was published in the journal Nature Communications, included the examination of meteorites which were found in the United States, Australia and Canada. It was found the meteorites contained three out of five chemical components needed in the formation of DNA. The other two components were also detected after the researchers adjusted the system of analysis.

The meteorites examined in the study were from three different sources – one from the US state of Kentucky in 1950, one from the Tagish Lake in Canada in 2000 and the third one from Victoria in Australia in 1969. All of them were carbonaceous chondrites – a carbon-rich rocky material.

According to Yasuhiro Oba, the method used in the experiment did not include strong acids in order to extract the components from the meteorites. As a result, the study further bolsters the theory that meteorites played a major role in the development of the first living organisms in the world.

Study shows key ingredients needed for life on earth may have arrived from outer space

The pandemic took so much from everyone's loved ones: time, mental health, physical health, and just as we began to believe that living with the coronavirus was possible, here's another bad news.

People hospitalised during the pandemic for Covid and other reasons have a higher prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections than people hospitalised before the pandemic says a study.

Antibiotic-resistant infections claimed the lives of an estimated 1.2 million people worldwide in 2019, with the number anticipated to increase by more than tenfold by 2050.

The study, which was presented at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) in Portugal this year, looked at how the pandemic affected antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in 271 hospitals across the United States.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) secondary infections have been linked to the pandemic in the past. It is thought to be&nbsp;a result of increased antibiotic use to treat COVID-19 patients and interruptions to infection prevention and control measures in overburdened health systems.

During the pre-pandemic period, 1,789,458 patients were admitted to the hospital, and 3,729,208 were hospitalised during the pandemic.

In the pre-pandemic period, there were 63,263 people admitted to the hospital with at least one AMR infection, and during the pandemic, this number more than doubled,&nbsp;increasing&nbsp;to a whopping&nbsp;129,410.

AMR was shown to be more prevalent during the pandemic, with rates of 4.92 per 100 admissions during the epidemic and 4.11 per 100 admissions before the pandemic, according to the study.

Covid pandemic increased antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections: Study

Have you ever wondered why humans live a far longer life than the animals around us?

Surely, you must’ve thought about it at one time or another. Why is it that for our animal companions, our dogs or cats, a 20-year lifespan is quite long, but for us, a 50-60 years life is at times considered short?

Well, the simple reason behind that is that humans on average die at around 70-80 years of age. In 2017, the United Nations pegged the estimated global average life expectancy at 72.6 years.&nbsp;

But why do we have a longer lifespan?

Earlier scientists thought that this had something to do with our body size. Experts suggested that a smaller body size burns up energy quickly, which causes a speedier decline. For example, a mice has an average lifespan of 3.7 years while for a dog it can be anywhere from 10-13 years.

But then, how does a naked mole rat that is only five inches big have pretty much the same lifespan as a giraffe? While a giraffe typically lives for 24 years, the naked mole-rat lives for 25 years.&nbsp;

A new study by the Wellcome Sanger Institute in Cambridge, which was published in the journal Nature suggests that the key to the logic behind the high or low lifespans might be in the rate of genetic decay and DNA mutations.

The study reports that animals with longer lives successfully slow down their DNA mutations, which contributes to their lengthy lifespans.&nbsp;

Somatic mutations are genetic alterations that occur in all cells and are mostly inconsequential, but some of them can set a cell on the route to cancer or affect normal function.

A report by the Telegraph quotes the study’s lead author saying that: “To find a similar pattern of genetic changes in animals as different from one another as a mouse and a tiger was surprising.&nbsp;

“But the most exciting aspect of the study has to be finding that lifespan is inversely proportional to the somatic mutation rate. This suggests that somatic mutations may play a role in ageing.”

Going back to the giraffe and naked mole-rat example, the key to their almost similar lifespan lies in the number of genetic mutations; which is 99 for the former and 93 for the latter.

While we humans only face 47 mutations a year, mice which have a very short life span of 3.7 years experience suffer a massive number of 796 mutations every year.&nbsp;

The finding, according to the researchers, opens the door to a better knowledge of the ageing process, as well as the inevitability and timing of death.

Why do humans have a longer life span than our furry companions? Scientists have the answer

Spinosaurus, the largest known carnivorous dinosaur, had one of the densest bones which allowed it to hunt under water, researchers have claimed, finally putting rest to the debate on how it hunted.

The archaeologists analysed the density of Spinosaurus bones and compared them to other animals like penguins, hippos, and alligators.

The team found that Spinosaurus and its close relative&nbsp;Baryonyx&nbsp;from the Cretaceous of the UK had dense bones that would have allowed them to submerge themselves underwater to hunt, they said in the study published in Nature on Wednesday.

The scientists were already aware that Spinosaurus had certain affinities with water – their elongate jaws and cone-shaped teeth are similar to those of fish-eating predators, and the ribcage of Baryonyx, from Surrey, even contained half-digested fish scales.

“We battled sandstorms, flooding, snakes, scorpions and more to excavate the most enigmatic dinosaur in the world and now we have multiple lines of evidence all pointing in the same direction -- the skeleton really has 'water-loving dinosaur' written all over it!" paleontologist and National Geographic explorer Nizar Ibrahim said in a statement.

Paper's lead author Matteo Fabbri said researchers sought an alternative means of identifying how the Spinosaurus and other long-extinct dinosaurs lived.

"The idea for our study was, okay, clearly we can interpret the fossil data in different ways. But what about the general physical laws?" Fabbri said.

"There are certain laws that are applicable to any organism on this planet. One of these laws regards density and the capability of submerging into water."

Spinosaurus, about 50 feet (15 meters) long and weighing seven tons, lived 95 million years ago in Africa.

Spinosaurus aegyptiacus&nbsp;remains were first discovered about 100 years ago in Egypt, reports BBC.

They were moved to a museum in Munich but destroyed during World War Two.

Since then only fragments of Spinosaurus bones have been found.

This biggest carnivorous dinosaur swam underwater to hunt, finds research

A group of researchers have been working for quite some time to find the most boring person in the world and it looks like they finally have the answer. The answer is a religious data entry worker, who likes watching TV, and lives in a town, according to the researchers from the University of Essex.<o:p></o:p>

The research data comprised of more than 500 people across five experiences where they studied a number of professions. In the final result, they found cleaning, banking, data analysis and accounting as the blandest jobs in the world.

"The irony is studying boredom is actually very interesting and has many real-life impacts," said researcher Wijnand Van Tilburg. "These papers show how persuasive perceptions of boredom are and what an impact this can have on people," Tilburg added.<o:p></o:p>

The research paper, which was published in the 'Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin', also pointed out religion, watching TV, bird watching and smoking as the dullest hobbies.<o:p></o:p>

It further stated that the boring people tend to live in small towns rather than big cities and stereotypically boring people are generally avoided and disliked by people around them.

Those perceived as boring may thus be at greater risk of harm, addiction and mental health issues. According to the report, they struggle to form interpersonal relationships with other people and that is a major factor behind the mental health problems.<o:p></o:p>

On the other hand, the researchers found that performing arts, science, journalism, health profession and teaching are the most exciting jobs in the world.<o:p></o:p>

It further stated that the boring people tend to live in small towns rather than big cities and stereotypically boring people are generally avoided and disliked by people around them. Also, the companies with more than 30 per cent female executives were more likely to outperform companies that do not have as many female executives.&nbsp;

The study further highlighted that women-led SMEs contribute about £85bn to economic output. However, Beis research shows that just 16 per cent of small business employers and one in three of entrepreneurs are women.&nbsp;

It is one of many mysteries about long COVID: Who is more prone to developing it? Are some people more likely than others to experience physical, neurological or cognitive symptoms than can emerge, or linger for, months after their coronavirus infections have cleared?

Now, a team of researchers who followed more than 200 patients for two to three months after their COVID diagnoses report that they have identified biological factors that might help predict if a person will develop long COVID.

The study, published Tuesday by the journal Cell, found four factors that could be identified early in a person’s coronavirus infection that appeared to correlate with increased risk of having lasting symptoms weeks later.

The researchers said they had found that there was an association between these factors and long COVID (which goes by the medical name post acute sequelae of COVID-19, or PASC) whether the initial infection was serious or mild. They said that the findings might suggest ways to prevent or treat some cases of long COVID, including the possibility of giving people antiviral medications soon after an infection has been diagnosed.

“It’s the first real solid attempt to come up with some biologic mechanisms for long COVID,” said Dr. Steven Deeks, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, who was not involved in the study.

He and other experts, along with the study authors, cautioned that the findings were exploratory and would need to be verified by considerably more research.

Still, Deeks said, “They’ve identified these four major factors. Each is biologically plausible, consistent with theories that other people are pursuing, and importantly, each is actionable. If these pathways get confirmed, we as clinicians can actually design interventions to make people better. That is the take-home message.”

One of the four factors researchers identified is the level of coronavirus RNA in the blood early in the infection, an indicator of viral load. Another is the presence of certain autoantibodies — antibodies that mistakenly attack tissues in the body as they do in conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. A third factor is the reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus, a virus that infects most people, often when they are young, and then usually becomes dormant.

The final factor is having Type 2 diabetes, although the researchers and other experts said that in studies involving larger numbers of patients, it might turn out that diabetes is only one of several medical conditions that increase the risk of long COVID.

“I think this research stresses the importance of doing measurements early in the disease course to figure out how to treat patients, even if we don’t really know how we’re going to use all that information yet,” said Jim Heath, principal investigator of the study and president of the Institute for Systems Biology, a nonprofit biomedical research organization in Seattle.

“Once you can measure something, then you may be able to start doing something about it,” Heath said, adding: “We did this analysis because we know patients will go to physicians and they’ll say that they’re tired all the time or whatever, and the physician just tells them to get more sleep. That’s not very helpful. So, we wanted to actually have a way to quantify and say that there’s actually something wrong with these patients.”

The complex study had several components and involved dozens of researchers at several universities and centers including the Institute for Systems Biology, the University of Washington and Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, where the study’s lead medical author, Dr. Jason Goldman, is an infectious disease specialist.

The primary group of patients included 209 people, ages 18 to 89, who were infected with the coronavirus during 2020 or early 2021 and were seen at Swedish Medical Center or an affiliated clinic. Many were hospitalized for their initial infections, but some were seen only as outpatients. Researchers analyzed blood and nasal swabs when patients were diagnosed, during the acute phase of their infections and two to three months later.

They surveyed the patients about 20 symptoms associated with long COVID, including fatigue, brain fog and shortness of breath, and corroborated those reports with electronic health records, Heath said.

He said 37% of the patients had reported three or more symptoms of long COVID two or three months after infection. A further 24% reported one or two symptoms, and 39% reported no symptoms. Of patients reporting three or more symptoms, 95% had one or more of the four biological factors identified in the study when they were diagnosed with COVID-19, Heath said.

The most influential factor appeared to be autoantibodies, which were associated with two-thirds of the cases of long COVID, Heath said. Each of the other three factors showed up in about a third of the cases, he said, and there was considerable overlap, with several factors identified in some patients.

The researchers corroborated some of their findings in a separate group of 100 patients, many with mild initial infections, from research led by Dr. Helen Chu at the University of Washington. The researchers also compared their results to data from 457 healthy people.

“The study is large and comprehensive and is a great resource for the community studying long COVID,” said Akiko Iwasaki, an immunologist at Yale, who was not involved in the research.

Dr. Avindra Nath, who is chief of the section on infections of the nervous system at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and was not involved in the study, called the study well designed but pointed out several weaknesses, including the fact that patients had been followed for only two to three months. “This might be too short a time frame,” he said. “Some might just improve spontaneously with time.”

Iwasaki noted that 71% of the patients in the primary group had been hospitalized, limiting the ability to conclude that the biological factors were equally relevant for people with mild initial infections.

One persuasive conclusion, several experts said, was the suggestion that because patients with high viral loads early on often developed long COVID, giving people antivirals soon after diagnosis might help prevent long-term symptoms.

“The quicker one can eliminate the virus, the less likelihood of developing persistent virus or autoimmunity, which may drive long COVID,” Iwasaki said.

That some patients had reactivated Epstein-Barr virus also made sense, Nath said, because other diseases have reawakened that virus, and its reactivation has been linked to conditions like chronic fatigue syndrome, which some cases of long COVID resemble, and multiple sclerosis. Deeks said it might be possible to give antivirals or immunotherapy to patients with reactivated Epstein-Barr virus.

There were other intriguing findings that experts said needed more substantiation. One was a suggestion that because people with lingering respiratory problems had low levels of the stress hormone cortisol, they might benefit from cortisol replacement therapy, which Heath said some doctors were already trying.

In another finding that he said might provide a way to document that patients’ neurological symptoms resulted from long COVID, the blood of people with lingering neurological issues contained elevated levels of proteins associated with disrupted circadian rhythms and sleep/wake cycles.

One patient in the study’s primary group was John Gillotte, 40, a software engineer who contracted the coronavirus in March 2020. He was on a ventilator for about six days, after which he experienced delirium in the hospital when he closed his eyes.

“I saw the devil, who was like 50 feet tall, screaming at me, throwing limbs that he dismembered off of other people,” recalled Gillotte, who later had an image of the demon tattooed on his right arm, with depictions of hell below and heaven above to symbolize his progress from illness to recovery.

Gillotte, who moved from Seattle to Manhattan last year, said that for several months after his infection, he experienced muscle weakness, lack of stamina, brain fog that impaired his concentration at work, an altered sense of smell and the perception that most food tasted like ashes.

He said that before COVID, he had a spontaneous ability to visualize specific colors with certain foods — pink when he sprinkled pepper, blue with a type of liquor — but now, he is dismayed to have lost those automatic connections.

Gillotte said he doesn’t have diabetes and didn’t know if he had the other three factors because researchers said the study protocol prevented them from disclosing data about participants.

Heath, however, noted that Gillotte had been reinfected with the coronavirus in October 2020, which might reflect one theory that emerged from their study: that patients with higher levels of autoantibodies had lower levels of protective antibodies against the coronavirus, possibly making them more vulnerable to reinfection.

Deeks said lower protective antibody levels could also be a pathway leading to long-term symptoms. “If you don’t have a good antibody response, you don’t clear the virus; you have more virus around, and that leads to more long COVID,” he said.

Still, Heath said that overall, the research had showed that the four biological factors intersected and overlapped, suggesting that there might be relatively straightforward ways to forestall long COVID early on. Months later, “all these vague symptoms are so hard to track down, because you’ve sort of lost that information, but if you look back when those symptoms are first triggered, it actually looks like it’s manageable.”
