Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy said that the flooding in the city was caused by a record 50 centimetres of rainfall overnight.

Cyclone Fengal: Indian Army carries out rescue operations in Puducherry

Although rainfall has stopped in the flood-hit Indian state of Gujarat, many towns and villages are still suffering from water logging due to high water levels of the rivers, reported news agency ANI, on Friday (Aug 30).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) alerted on Friday that the heavy rains and floods in the coastal state have now escalated to Cyclone Asna. This cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea became the first after 1979.&nbsp;The name Asna was&nbsp;given by Pakistan.&nbsp;

According to the weather department, the cyclone will be moving towards the west-northwestward over the northeast Arabian Sea, far from the Indian coast. This will occur over the next two days.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said that he and&nbsp;Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a discussion over the phone about the flood situation and ongoing measures to be taken for the victims. The call took place on Thursday (Aug 29) morning.

The nursing staff of Jhunjhunu Government Hospital, told news agency ANI, “Some people have suffered fractures in hands and some in legs. Three people are seriously injured, while others are safe."

Dr Pravin Sharma, Jhunjhunu Government Hospital said, “All the people trapped in the mine have been rescued safely. Three of them were in serious condition and have been referred to Jaipur."

Earlier, BJP MLA Dharmpal Gurjar said, “I had gone to Haryana for election campaign but when I got this information, I immediately came here. I called everyone and took stock of the entire situation. I have called the SDM here. The rescue team is engaged and 6-7 ambulances are standing here... The entire administration is on alert. There is no report of any casualty so far, definitely everyone will come out safely."

Rescuers and onlookers clapped and cheered, on Saturday (May 11) as a survivor was rescued five days after being buried underneath the rubble of a building which collapsed in the South African city of George.&nbsp;

In a clip of the rescue operation posted by Western Cape Premier Alan Winde on X, rescuers and onlookers can be heard applauding as a man who survived under the rubble for 116 hours is being pulled out.&nbsp;

“Our survivor has been successfully extracted from the debris after more than 116 hours. This is nothing short of a miracle - thank you to all the search and rescue teams!,” Winde said.&nbsp;

The rescue team had already established contact with the person before pulling him out of the rubble, said the local official. He also thanked the rescue teams and volunteers.&nbsp;

“Thank you to the rescue teams and volunteers who have been working so hard these last 4-5 days to rescue those trapped. We never gave up hope and today I cannot express the extent of my relief and joy. Thank you to all the teams – you are true heroes. I am proud of you,” Winde added.&nbsp;

<h2>Death toll rises to 13</h2>

Out of the 81 workers who were present on the site when the building collapsed, 13 were confirmed dead, 29 were alive and 39 were still unaccounted for, reported Reuters citing local officials.&nbsp;

Rescuers were seen using cranes, drills and even their bare hands as they tried to reach those trapped under the rubble after the collapse on Monday.&nbsp;

According to authorities, many survivors sustained burns and head injuries while some suffered internal injuries.&nbsp;

He added, “We know that time is against us”. The police were using fingerprints, DNA testing and photographs, said the head of rescue operations.&nbsp;

The incident took place in the country’s coastal city of George, on Monday afternoon around 2:09 pm (local time) when an under-construction five-storey building came crashing down for reasons which are not known as of yet.&nbsp;

At least 48 people were killed in a series of&nbsp;earthquakes that struck central Japan on New Year's Day, authorities said on Tuesday (Jan 2). The earthquake triggered tsunami waves of over a metre high and sparked a major fire which wreaked destruction overnight and damaged homes. 
 
The scale of destruction caused by the earthquake is still emerging as news footage showed sunken boats at a port, toppled buildings, locals living without power amid freezing overnight temperatures, and countless charred homes. 
 
Speaking to AFP on Tuesday, a meteorological agency official said all the tsunami warnings and advisories which were imposed after the earthquake were lifted.

The official said that small changes to tidal levels can still take place.

Meanwhile, 120 people have been waiting to be rescued in Japan. The country's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said, "At the moment, we have confirmed there are 120 cases of people are waiting to be rescued. We also have reports on evacuation. As of 11:00 am local today, we have confirmed that there are a total of 955 evacuation centres in Ishikawa Prefecture and Niigata Prefecture. A total of 57,360 people have evacuated.”

<h2 lang="en-US">Quake caused "extensive" damage: PM Kishida</h2>

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Tuesday said the major quake had caused "extensive" damage and led to numerous casualties. 
 
"Very extensive damage has been confirmed, including numerous casualties, building collapses and fires," he&nbsp;told reporters while stating that it is a "race against time" to rescue victims.

"We have been making all efforts to gather information since yesterday evening, but the blockage of roads means it is extremely difficult to access the northern part of the Noto peninsula. An inspection from above via helicopter has shown widespread damage including roads cut off, landslides and fires," he said.&nbsp;

"Now that the tsunami warning has been lifted, we will be able to secure sea transport routes, and we have been working continuously since last night to mobilise not only land transport but also air and sea transport to get the necessary supplies and rescue personnel to the area," Kishida added.&nbsp;

"It has been extremely difficult to reach the northern part of Noto Peninsula due to the blockage of roads," said Kishida, after a disaster response meeting.&nbsp;

<h2 lang="en-US">155 earthquakes hit Japan</h2>

The Japan Meteorological Office said the country has been hit by 155 earthquakes, which included a 7.6-magnitude jolt and another having magnitude of over 6, since Monday (Jan 1). 
 
The JMA stated that the magnitude of most of the quakes was greater than 3 while the strength moderated gradually. It added that six strong jolts were still felt in the country early Tuesday (Jan 2). 
 
The US Geological Survey (USGS) meanwhile stated that the magnitude of the earthquake, which hit Ishikawa prefecture on the main island of Honshu, was 7.5. 
 
At least 1.2 metres (four feet) high waves hit the port of Wajima on Monday, and multiple smaller tsunamis were reported elsewhere.

The local energy provider said that nearly 32,700 households were without power on Tuesday (Jan 2).

As per the local media, four bullet trains were halted for hours on Monday&nbsp;in the affected region as nearly 1,400 passengers remained stuck. Mobile phone coverage and flights also reportedly remained disrupted as many convenience stores were closed. 
 
Defence Minister Minoru Kihara said that nearly 1,000 military personnel are prepared to go to the region and around 8,500 others have been kept on standby. They also dispatched 20 military aircraft to survey the damage. 
 
The Japan Meteorological Agency said that the country can face more quakes in the next two to three days.

As per local media reports, nearly 100 buildings were burned in central Japan.

United States President Joe Biden offered assistance to Japan on Monday (Jan 1) in the wake of the deadly earthquake.

Japan earthquake death toll rises to 48, as 120 people wait to get rescued

A three-year-old girl who fell in an open borewell on Monday (Dec 1) in India’s western state of Gujarat and was rescued later in the night was pronounced dead by doctors, reported Indian Express. Unfortunately, the girl was&nbsp;in an unconscious condition when she was pulled out after a nine hours long rescue operation.&nbsp;She&nbsp;was being treated in a hospital&nbsp;in Khambhalia, the headquarters of Devbhumi Dwarka district.

“After being rescued, she was first taken to a hospital in Khambhalia along the way and she was pronounced dead there. Her body is now being brought to GG Hospital for post-mortem,” Dr Nandini Desai, medical superintendent of state government-run GG Hospital, was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

In a dramatic rescue operation on Friday (Dec 29) evening, a total of 122 anglers found themselves stranded on an ice floe that had detached from the main ice sheet on Upper Red Lake in northern Minnesota. The incident occurred about 30 feet from the shore, prompting a swift response from the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the ordeal.

According to the sheriff’s office, the fishermen were unable to return to dry land after the ice floe broke loose.

Emergency responders were alerted just before 5 pm CT. Bystanders attempted a makeshift rescue using a canoe, resulting in four individuals falling into the water.

However, they were quickly rescued.

The first four fishermen were successfully rescued around 6:40 pm CT, and by 7:37 pm, all 122 individuals had been safely brought back to the mainland, as reported in a Facebook post by the sheriff’s office.

Chris Mueller, the public information officer for the sheriff’s office, commended the response, stating, “Our first responders have had a lot of practice this year, and it is quite impressive we evacuated 122 people in less than 3 hours from the first call in a rural area of the county.”

The incident has brought the spotlight on the precarious ice conditions in the region, with the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources cautioning the public.

In a Facebook post on Thursday (Dec 28), they laid emphasis on the need for caution due to changing and uneven ice conditions.

“While the forecast looks good for making ice, ice conditions will remain poor until there’s a string of cold days to form new, clear ice. Please stay on shore until there’s at least 4 inches of new, clear ice.
