India is often criticised for the poor road conditions and the numerous potholes in them that cause inconvenience and sometimes lead to accidents. However, in a bizarre incident, a pothole became a lifesaver for an 80-year-old man, Darshan Singh Brar, from the Indian state of Haryana. Initially declared dead by doctors in Patiala, Brar's "lifeless" body was en route to his hometown near Karnal for the final rites when a pothole altered the course of events.

As the ambulance carrying Brar hit a pothole, his grandson, who accompanied him, observed a movement in his hand. Sensing a faint heartbeat, the quick-thinking grandson urged the ambulance driver to divert to the nearest hospital. Contrary to the earlier declaration of death, doctors at the new hospital confirmed signs of life in Brar.

<h2>From 'mourning to hope'</h2>

Brar&nbsp;is presently receiving critical care at a hospital in Karnal. The family, initially plunged into grief, now sees the incident as a miraculous turn of events and anticipates a swift recovery.

"My brother in Patiala informed us around 9 am on Thursday about our grandfather's death, and he was getting him to Nising (roughly 100 km away) in an ambulance for his last rites. We had informed our relatives and other local residents who knew him and they had already gathered to mourn his passing. A tent had been set up and food had also been arranged for the mourners. We had also got wood for the cremation,"&nbsp;Balwan Singh, one of Brar's grandsons, told NDTV.&nbsp;

During the ambulance journey near Dhand village in Haryana's Kaithal, the pothole impact prompted Brar's grandson to re-evaluate his condition.

To everyone's astonishment, the elderly man exhibited signs of life. The ambulance was redirected to the nearest hospital, where doctors confirmed Brar's vitality. Subsequently, he was referred to the NP Rawal Hospital in Karnal.

<h2>What are the doctors saying?</h2>

Although Dr Netrapal from Rawal Hospital refrained from confirming the prior death declaration, he told NDTV&nbsp;that Brar arrived breathing with stable blood pressure and a pulse, although Brar's current critical condition, marked by chest infections and laborious breathing, keeps him in the ICU.&nbsp;

The relentless cold wave continued to persist as the minimum temperature in the national capital region dropped to 7 degrees Celsius. The dense fog drastically reduced visibility, creating an environment where navigating through the streets became really difficult.

Tensions escalated in the Kapurthala region of the northern Indian state of Punjab where Nihang Sikhs opened fire on police, killing one constable and injuring five in the early hours of Thursday (Nov 23). The deceased constable has been identified as Jaspal Singh who was posted at the Sultanpur Lodhi police station. The clashes erupted over the ownership of gurdwara Akal Bunga situated opposite to main gurdwara Ber Sahib. The situation has been tense for the last three days but it escalated on Thursday morning when the police attempted to vacate the gurudwara from the Nihang group, led by Mann Singh, according to a Hindustan Times report. The Nihangs are heavily armed and have locked the gurdwara from the inside, forcing the police to barricade the whole area and initiate talks with them to vacate possession. Up until Tuesday (Nov 21), the gurdwara was in the possession of Patiala-based Baba Budha Dal Balbir Singh but his rival Mann Singh took possession forcefully with his followers brutally assaulting two employees of the gurdwara. Police have so far arrested 10 people from the Nihang sect for allegedly encroaching on the gurdwara. The operation is still underway with the officials hopeful of making a breakthrough. Who are Nihangs? Nihangs are a Sikh sect, distinguished by their blue robes, called Khalsa Swarupa and decorated turbans surmounted with a chakram or steel quoits. They are often associated with acts of bravery and valour and for defending the rights of the weak. However, in recent years, the group has come under heavy scrutiny for its actions. In 2020, Nihang protesters chopped off the hand of a police officer in Patiala when he was attempting to impose a COVID-19 lockdown. Singh's arm was chopped off and he was hung upside down to be displayed in front of the protesting farmers' stage at the Singhu border, just outside the national capital. "The Nihangs said that the incident took place because Lakhbir attempted to commit sacrilege to the 'Sarbaloh Granth'. It is been reported that this deceased had been staying with the same group of Nihangs for some time," a statement by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) - the group leading the farmers' protest, read at the time. The Indian Supreme Court on Tuesday (Nov 21) rapped the Punjab government over the unabated stubble burning which is making Delhi’s air quality toxic.

It said that Punjab farmers are being “made a villain” due to the Punjab government’s failure to make crop residue management completely free.

A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia, while hearing the plea, suggested why should there be any purchase under the minimum support price (MSP) system from farmers who indulge in crop residue burning, irrespective of the fact that citizens and children were affected due to pollution.

<h2>'Farmers are being made villain'</h2>

“Why doesn’t the Punjab government make the process of crop residue 100% free? To burn it, all the farmer needs to do is light a matchstick. Machine for the management of crop residue to farmers is not everything. Even if the machine is given for free, there is diesel cost, manpower, etc,” the Supreme Court said, asking why Punjab cannot fund diesel, manpower, etc., and utilise the byproduct, according to PTI news agency.

“The state of Punjab should also take a cue from the state of Haryana in the manner in which financial incentives are given,” the apex court added.

When the Punjab government, during the hearing, told the court that it is taking steps to control crop residue burning, senior advocate Aparajita Singh, who is assisting the court as an amicus curiae in the pollution matter, flagged that more than 700 farm fire incidents were reported in the state on Monday.

"What are they (authorities) doing?" Singh told the bench.

Justice Dhulia observed, "The only person who can answer this is the farmers. He can tell you why he is doing it. He is not here. The farmer is being made a villain and the villain has not been heard. He (farmer) must be having some reasons."

<h2>Alternative ways of disposing stubble&nbsp;</h2>

The court also asked Attorney General R Venkatramani to explore “how you can discourage paddy and encourage alternate crops”.

Indian Supreme Court raps Punjab govt over stubble burning, asks it to take cue from Haryana

Delhi India's political pulse in one of the world's most rapidly rising metropolises is grappling with the crisis that spotlights the urgency of addressing climate goals. The city's air quality has plummeted below acceptable standards in recent days landing it on the global list of the most polluted cities in the world. But what's the economic role of this predicament take a look.

Stubble burning: 'Drastic fall in cases'

The air pollution level in India's capital city New Delhi continues to be 'severely bad' category as the authorities adopt emergency measures like shutting down schools and imposing traffic curbs.

The worsening air quality has been a result of many factors, with stubble burning in neighbouring states and harmful emissions from vehicles being the chief contributors.

The Worldview satellite of NASA was able to capture the toxic smog hovering in the northern parts of India on November 7. However, in the image captured, smog was seen enveloping areas from Pakistan to the Bay of Bengal.

In the satellite data, the smog was seen coupled with a sharp increase in smoke rising from farm fires in North India.

<h2>New Delhi remains the worst hit by air pollution</h2>

As per the data collected by NASA, there has been a sharp rise in the number of farm fires since October 29.

On October 29, the state saw a 740 per cent increase in farm fires, with&nbsp;1,068 incidents recorded, the highest record of stubble burning in one day in the current harvesting season.

As the air quality index (AQI) went as high as 500 in some areas of the capital city. New Delhi remained on the top of the most polluted cities index from the last six days.

The government invoked Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), a set of anti-pollution guidelines, and a ban has been placed on construction activities and diesel trucks in the national capital.

The governments of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab have been asked by the Supreme Court to urgently speak with the Centre on how the farm fires should be stopped.

The court stated that it would not allow this issue to turn into a political battle, emphasising that the choking air quality is leading to the "murder of people's health".

The Delhi government led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been planning to create artificial rain in the capital on November 20-21, which is likely to provide relief to residents from the pollution.

A meeting was held by Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai and Finance Minister Atishi with a team from IIT Kanpur which had stated that a spell of artificial rain is likely to help resolve this air emergency.

'Stop immediately': Akali Dal's appeal to PM Modi as Golden Temple model set to go under hammer

Amid controversy over no guard of honour at the funeral of Agniveer Amritpal Singh in the Indian state of Punjab, the Indian Army said that the agniveer died by suicide. The army further admitted that there was "some misunderstanding and misrepresentation of facts" around his death.

The Indian government had announced the Agnipath scheme in 2022, in place of the&nbsp;earlier process&nbsp;of recruitment of soldiers into the armed forces. As per the scheme, the soldiers, who are called&nbsp;as Agniveers, are recruited for four years, after which they get an&nbsp;opportunity to join the regular cadre.&nbsp;

On Sunday (Oct 15), the Indian Army stated that Amritpal Singh shot himself to death while on sentry duty&nbsp;and that no guard of honour was extended to his funeral, as deaths due to such self-inflicted injuries are not given such honours.

The Army further stated that they do not differentiate between soldiers on the basis of whether they joined the force before or after the Agnipath scheme's implementation.&nbsp;

The Indian Army faced allegations of not extending military honours at the funeral of Singh, as he was an Agniveer soldier.

The Army's Nagrota-headquartered White Knight Corps said on Saturday (Oct 14) that he died because of a self-inflicted gunshot injury while he was on sentry duty in the Rajouri sector.

<h2>'Suicide cases not entitled to military funerals'</h2>

Later on Sunday night, the Army in a statement said, "It is a grave loss to the family and the Indian Army that Agniveer Amritpal Singh committed suicide by shooting himself while on sentry duty. In consonance with the existing practice, the mortal remains, after the conduct of medico-legal procedures, were transported under Army arrangements along with an escort party to his native place for the last rites."&nbsp;

"Unfortunate instances of death arising out of suicide/self-inflicted injury, irrespective of the type of entry, are accorded due respect by the Armed Forces along with deep and enduring empathy with the family. Such cases, however, are not entitled to military funerals as per the extant Army Order of 1967, in vogue. Policy on the subject has been consistently followed ever since, without any discrimination," it added.&nbsp;

"As per data held, there has been an average yearly loss ranging between 100-140 soldiers since 2001 where deaths occurred due to suicides/self-inflicted injuries, and a military funeral in such cases was not accorded," the Army stated.&nbsp;

It stated that they give due priority to entitled disbursement of financial assistance and relief, which includes immediate financial relief for carrying out funerals.

"Such unfortunate instances of loss bear heavy on the family and the Forces as a fraternity. During such times, it is important and incumbent on society to uphold the respect, privacy and dignity of the family while empathising with them in their moment of grief," the Army stated.&nbsp;

"Armed Forces are known for adherence to the policies and protocols and will continue to do so as hithertofore. The Indian Army requests support of all sections of society while it follows its established protocols," it added.&nbsp;

Taking to X, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday said irrespective of the army policy, the policy of his government will remain the same for a martyr and it will give Rs 10 million (approximately $120,000) to the family of the soldier.

Agniveer Amritpal Singh committed suicide, says Indian Army amid row over guard of honour

Opposition parties in Punjab are in uproar after the Indian Army did not provide a guard of honour during the last rites of Agniveer Amritpal Singh, who passed away in Jammu and Kashmir on October 11. The Army justified its decision by citing Singh's self-inflicted gunshot injury as the cause of death, in line with the existing policy.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed shock over the incident and pledged to raise a strong objection with the central government. He affirmed his government's unwavering commitment to honouring martyred soldiers, vowing to provide ₹1 crore (approx 121k USD)&nbsp;to Singh's family in accordance with the state's policy, reported ANI.

<h2>Funeral and political response</h2>

Amritpal Singh, a soldier in a Jammu and Kashmir Rifles battalion, was cremated without a military guard of honour in his native village in Punjab's Mansa district. This prompted strong reactions from political leaders.

Former Union Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal expressed her shock and called for Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's intervention. She requested directives to ensure all martyred soldiers receive military honours and stressed the importance of respecting their service.

<h2>Army's explanation&nbsp;</h2>

The Army issued a statement detailing Singh's cause of death, which resulted from a self-inflicted gunshot injury while on sentry duty in the Rajouri Sector. A court of inquiry is underway to uncover further details. The statement revealed that Singh's body was transported in a civilian ambulance, accompanied by army personnel. Due to the self-inflicted nature of the injury, the Army adhered to its policy, refraining from providing a guard of honour or a military funeral.

Political figures, including Punjab Congress Chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, expressed their disappointment and questioned whether being an Agniveer recruit devalued a soldier's life. They highlighted the family's need to request the local Punjab Police to provide a guard of honour.

Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal also criticised the Bhagwant Mann government for not sending a state-level dignitary to pay respects to the deceased soldier. He called for a more dignified farewell and said that former chief minister Parkash Singh Ji Badal would have acted differently in the same situation.

SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia called for the discontinuation of the Agniveer scheme and advocated for the regularisation of all soldiers recruited under it. This controversy has raised questions about the treatment of Agniveer recruits compared to other soldiers and the policy framework governing military honours for fallen soldiers.

India: Controversy erupts over absence of army guard of honour for Punjab soldier's last rites

On Friday, October 6, authorities in Pakistan reported that a loud explosion heard in Punjab province could be attributed to a sonic boom.

Explosion in Punjab province: Authorities suspect 'Sonic Boom'

Puneet Khanna, the driving force behind the Hariawal Punjab Society NGO, and a multitude of volunteers are on a mission to transform the landscape of the Indian state of Punjab and combat the looming threat of climate change. They are leading the charge, demonstrating that grassroots efforts and community involvement can make a significant impact in the battle against climate change.&nbsp;Puneet shared his thoughts on the ambitious milestones the NGO strives to achieve.&nbsp;

"The main motto of the Hariawal Punjab under the Hariawal Society NGO is to increase the green cover in Punjab. The green cover in Punjab is nearly 4 per cent, and we are trying to boost that. Till now, we have planted about 15 lakh (1.5 million) saplings till 2023. We are working on three things: tree plantation, water conservation, and waste management."

Puneet's passion for the environment was evident as he continued, "We have planted 100 plus micro forests. Need and fear are the two guiding factors in our lives, and everyone joins our group with this concept. Punjab's population is around 3 crores, and it is our goal is that everyone grows at least one plant every year and takes care of it. When the green cover increases, it will bring stability to the environment."

They mostly grow native trees such as the sacred fig (peepal), margosa (neem), and banyan (bargad).&nbsp;Puneet added, "We also plant Moringa Oleifera (Sahijana), a traditional medicinal tree which has long been used to treat various ailments. This plant has the efficiency to cure more than 300 diseases. We also plant Indian rosewood (sheesham), Java Plum (jaamun), and mango (aam) trees. We do the plantation in the rainy season for four months."

Their innovative approach extended to the community with initiatives like Har Ghar Nursery.

Puneet explained, "Many families, who are associated with us, plant mango seeds, Jamun and drake. They plant over a hundred saplings on their house roofs and then give them to us."

Planting such a large number of saplings, however, comes with its challenges.

The environmental activist said, "There is always a challenge whenever we do selfless service. This is volunteer work, and we do not take any funding from anyone. Time management is also a challenge, considering our studies, jobs, and time for family. Several sacrifices are made. When we kicked off this initiative, it was a challenge to find safe places and get people onboard as volunteers."

Despite these hurdles, their dedication prevailed.

"We have a good network now. We also check timely as to how many saplings that we planted have survived. Sacred fig (Peepal), margosa (neem), and Banyan (Bargad) are the longest-living plants and they live for thousands of years. It helps with absorbing carbon emissions and maintaining water level."

Looking to the future, Puneet shared insights into their vision, "We work on water conservation and how can we make every house equipped with rainwater harvesting. We organise workshops and programmes. We rejuvenate the old lakes aggressively, promoting drip irrigation and saving water at households and social places."

But their commitment to the environment didn't stop there.

Puneet pointed out at the need for waste management, saying, "If we reduce non-recyclable poly bags from circulation, there will be much more waste conservation. Single-use non-recyclable plastics are harmful. Microplastics have reached the placentas of unborn babies. There is a need for the segregation of waste and recycling of their envelopes. We also promoted eco-bricks. We call it 'act of survival'."

He pointed out the stark reminder of the consequences of inaction, "If we don't do this, groundwater which is being extracted from the third ground layer in Punjab will exhaust. There are lakhs of tubewells in Punjab. There is wastage of water everywhere, including in households and industries."

A lookout notice was issued by Indian authorities against absconding former finance minister of Punjab and BJP leader Manpreet Singh Badal in a corruption case on Tuesday (Sept 26).

The notice was issued a day after the Punjab Vigilance Bureau found irregularities in the purchase of a property in Bathinda, following which a case was registered against Badal and five others on Monday.

Officials believe that Badal may flee the country to evade arrest, and have therefore put all airports on alert.

Meanwhile, a local court is scheduled to hear an anticipatory bail hearing of Badal on Tuesday.

Apart from Badal, former Bathinda Development Authority (BDA) chief administrator Bikramjit Shergill was also named in the case. The other four booked in the case were identified as Rajiv Kumar, Amandeep Singh, Vikas Arora and Pankaj.

<h2>On the hunt for Badal</h2>

The development follows an investigation launched by the vigilance bureau based on former MLA Sarup Chand Singla's complaint in 2021 alleging irregularities in the purchase of property at a prime location in Bathinda.

Singla, who was earlier with the Shiromani Akali Dal, had claimed that Badal, as a minister in the previous Congress government, used his position to convert two commercial plots into a residential plot for himself.

Badal had joined the BJP after quitting the Congress in January this year.

The case was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including sections 420 (cheating) and 468 (forgery), and also under the Prevention of Corruption Act

On Monday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann launched a tirade against Badal, saying those who used to boast about honesty are now running from pillar to post to save their skin.

"There is a huge difference between speaking the truth and standing by it," the chief minister said.

“These leaders earlier used to say that they would wait for whatever action is taken against them, but are now seeking legal protection against arrest,” he added.

The second wave of monsoon rainfall is wreaking havoc across India's northern states. The state of Punjab and the national capital New Delhi were most affected in the last 24 hours. Heavy rainfall has paralysed daily life and flooded vast portions of residential and agricultural land in the state of Punjab. As many as 41 people have been killed due to the devastating torrential floods which hit Punjab recently.

Monsoon rainfall in Indian state of Punjab kills 41 | WION Climate Tracker

The northern Indian state of Punjab, known for its bumper agricultural output, is facing the wrath of climate change, a new research by the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has revealed.&nbsp;The scientists studied&nbsp;the monsoon data and patterns over the past five decades to conclude that the rainy season was now staying far longer than the normal duration but the amount of rainfall was decreasing while remaining unevenly distributed.

Farmers in Punjab grow some of the most water-guzzling crops in the country and a bountiful monsoon season is necessary to ensure that the yield is proper. However, in the absence of required rain, lack of crop diversification and indiscriminate pumping of groundwater - Punjab might be heading towards becoming a 'water deficit desert', the study showed.&nbsp;

“During the monsoon season, paddy is the main crop grown in the state. The area under paddy has increased from 0.6 Mha during 1970 to 3.01 Mha during 2018, an increase of 400 per cent. To irrigate this water-guzzling crop, farmers are dependent either on monsoon rainfall or on underground water," read the study, conducted by&nbsp;senior agro meteorologists Sarabjot Kaur Sandhu and Prabhjyot Kaur.

<h2>17 years of deficient monsoon rainfall&nbsp;</h2>

The study added that monsoon patterns had aggravated in the last two decades (2001 onwards), compounding&nbsp;the problem. Between 2001 and 2020, Punjab recorded deficient monsoon rainfall in 17 years, despite monsoon lasting more than the normal 77 days.&nbsp;

"But over the last two decades, the duration of monsoon currents has increased but the rate of rainfall is well below the average of 6 mm/day. Also, the distribution of the rainfall during the season is highly variable during the four months. The sudden and heavy shower of rainfall received in a short span of time is not only declining the water productivity of crops but also hampering the recharging of underground aquifers."

Explaining how the rainfall was affecting the region, the study stated that the northeastern regions of the state lying in the foothills of Shivalik (the lowest range of the Himalayas) were receiving less rainfall over the years, which skewed the average distribution statistic.

The low to medium rainfall in June, and July meant that groundwater resources were heavily stretched out while heavy rainfall in September, delayed the maturity and harvesting of the paddy crop.&nbsp;

The study also notes that erratic changes in the rainfall pattern have led to a shift in the climate of&nbsp;Indo-Gangetic plains (IGP) and northeast India - meaning Punjab, which lies in IGP, and already has a semi-arid and subtropical climate was heading towards a relatively arid regime.&nbsp;

Up until Sunday (July 23), Punjab had received 57.7 per cent of the normal rainfall of the entire monsoon season with two months to go.&nbsp;Punjab recorded 248.1 mm of rain to date against the normal required 168.3 mm, representing a 47 per cent&nbsp;surplus. However, experts are wary that the rainfall may have come in short, excessive bursts that cause more damage to the crops, instead of low, continuous intensity.&nbsp;
