Governor of Pakistan's Punjab province on Friday (December 23) de-notified Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi with "immediate effect", plunging the region into a constitutional crisis. Governor Baligur Rehman took the step as he said the chief minister did not comply with his order of obtaining a vote of confidence. Later, however, the Lahore high court set aside the Punjab governor's order and reinstated Chaudhry Parvez Elahi as the chief minister and his cabinet 'conditionally' after he gave an undertaking that he would not dissolve the provincial assembly on the "wish" of ousted prime minister Imran Khan.

The governor belongs to Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N) while the chief minister is from Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party. The governor took the step of denotifying the chief minister in order to keep him from dissolving the assembly.

Former Pakistan prime minister and PTI chief Imran Khan had announced that provincial assemblies of Punjab and Kyber Pakhtunkhwa will be dissolved to force snap elections. PTI is in power in both these assemblies.

In the early hours of Friday, the governor issued an order denotifying chief minister Elahi and his Cabinet. Prior to that,&nbsp;large number of supporters of Pakistan's ousted prime minister Imran Khan "besieged" the governor's house.

"Since chief minister, Chaudhry Parvez Elahi has refrained from taking a vote of confidence at the appointed day and time (last Wednesday) therefore he ceases to hold office with immediate effect. He however can continue working as chief minister of Punjab till his successor is appointed," the governor said.

Elahi who belongs to the PTI junior coalition partner Pakistan Muslim League Quaid (PMLQ) moved the court against the governor's 'illegal order'.

PTI senior leader and former information minister Fawad Chaudhry said the governor will have to pay for his "misconduct".

"The governor's order denotifying the chief minister and his Cabinet has no legal value. Chief Minister Parvez Elahi and his cabinet will continue to function and a reference against him is being sent to the president for his removal from office," Fawad Chaudhry tweeted.

The PMLN and its allied parties had vowed to use all options to stop Khan from dissolving the two assemblies. They say the country can't afford early polls because of its poor economy.

Legal experts say the ongoing constitutional battle between the federal and Punjab governments will eventually be settled by courts as questions of law have arisen after Governor Balighur Rehman asked Chief Minister Elahi to seek a 'vote of confidence' in a special assembly session within 48 hours and subsequently denotified him for his failure to comply with his order.

Pakistan: Punjab governor denotifies CM Elahi with 'immediate effect', Lahore HC reinstates him

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan announced that his party's governments in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will dissolve their assemblies on December 23.

Pakistan political crisis: Imran Khan decides to dissolve assemblies

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan announced on Saturday that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party will dissolve its provincial assemblies next week in a bid to put pressure on the government to call early elections. Imran had urged the Shehbaz Sharif government to hold early elections but the Prime Minister has completely denied the request. With Pakistan going through extreme financial crisis due to natural disasters, the government has come under extreme pressure to organise polls.

"Next Friday (Dec. 23), we will dissolve the Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa assemblies," Khan said while addressing a gathering of his supporters in the eastern city of Lahore, reported The Dawn.

The PTI currently controls two out of Pakistan’s four provincial assemblies and the decision to dissolve their positions has&nbsp;given rise to a legislative crisis. Local elections are generally held alongside the general elections but the government has not said when they will be conducted.

The general elections are stated to take place in November 2023. Sharif has said earlier that the government will not hold local elections before the stipulated time for the polls.

Punjab is the most populous province of Pakistan right now with a population of over 220 million and with the province in crisis, the political scene in the country is expected to get complicated soon. According to the constitution, the government needs to hold regional elections within 90 days of the legislators submitting their resignation and that puts Sharif in a tight situation.

Imran also criticised former army chief Gen (retd.) Qamar Javed Bajwa and said that he has caused more damage to Pakistan than an enemy ever could.

“What Gen Bajwa did to Pakistan even an enemy could not have done. When I was in power, Gen Bajwa would tell me to forget about the accountability of thieves (Sharifs and Zardaris). The world knows about that first NRO, National Reconciliation Ordinance (amnesty for past crimes) deal given to the PPP and PML-N by Gen Pervaiz Musharraf and the second by Gen Bajwa,” Khan said.

Punjab's education minister requests calm after alleged release of girl hostel videos

What do you do when a house you've built with utmost love and hard work lies in the middle of a government infrastructure project? Accept the order and the compensation and move away? For most, it might be the rational approach but for a farmer in the Indian state of Punjab, taking the compensation and allowing authorities to demolish his home was not the way out.

Reportedly, Sukhwinder Singh Sukhi, a farmer, living in the Roshanwla village of Sangrur district in Punjab had built a&nbsp;$188,000 two-storey home on his field.

However, soon it was revealed that his house, which took two years in the making lay in the middle of the&nbsp;Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway construction. The state government informed&nbsp;Sukhwinder about the situation and offered him a compensation to move away and let authorities demolish the house.&nbsp;

However,&nbsp;Sukhwinder refused to take the compensation, stating it would be too expensive to build another home. Thus, the farmer took matters in his own hands and employed a construction crew that has experience in moving homes.&nbsp;

Up until the reports came in last, Sukhwinder's house had been moved 250 feet already. The target spot is 500 feet away.&nbsp;

"I'm shifting the house as it was coming in the way of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway. I was offered compensation but didn't want to build another house. I have spent around Rs 1.5 crore ($188,000) to build it. Right now it's been moved by 250 feet,"&nbsp;Sukhwinder&nbsp;was quoted as saying by ANI.&nbsp;

Change of guard in Pakistan's Punjab province as the top court voids Hamza Shahbaz's election victory and declares PTI-backed Parvez Elahi as the duly elected chief minister. Imran Khan's party calls the verdict 'supremacy of the constitution'.

WION Dispatch: Parvez Elahi becomes Pakistani Punjab's new CM, Imran Khan and PTI celebrate victory

Following the apex court’s verdict that saw Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hamza Shehbaz losing his status as the “trustee” chief minister, Elahi took oath as the chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province.

Pakistan’s interior minister warns of governor’s rule in Punjab if his entry is restricted

There seems to be no end to the political turmoil in Pakistan. With the country's most populous state Punjab becoming the battleground between the coalition government and the key opposition PTI. In the latest, Pakistan SC gives a big blow to the ruling party.

Pakistan SC overturns Punjab DY CM's decision, names Parvez Elahi as Punjab CM

All of the major local media outlets are reporting that Imran Khan, the nation’s former prime minister, is leading the PTI in 17 of the 20 provincial seats as the vote counting for Pakistan’s Punjab by-elections continues. According to these reports, the powerful coalition of prominent figures, including former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Vice-President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Maryam Nawaz, Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and leader of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), Maulana Fazlur Rehman, is on the verge of suffering a significant defeat in the province. PLM-N is&nbsp;leading in only 2 seats, while an Independent is ahead on&nbsp;1 seat.

Up until April, when then-Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar resigned following the federal parliament’s vote of no-confidence in Khan, Punjab was governed by the PTI party. A faction of the party’s state lawmakers voted in favour of the PML candidacy,&nbsp;which led to the PTI’s nominee&nbsp;for the position being defeated. Khan then successfully petitioned the Pakistani Election Commission to dismiss the state assembly legislators for improperly voting against the party’s request, creating vacancies for 20 seats. Sharif’s party now has 165 seats, while PTI holds 163, thus it will be a close contest. Sharif and coalition members are in charge of the assembly.

The voting started at 8 am and went until 5 pm, although Dunya News claimed that voting was suspended in some districts because of fighting. Following the “de-seating” of 25 PTI dissident MPs by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on May 23 for casting a ballot against PML-Hamza N’s Shahbaz in the Punjab chief minister election, the 20 seats became vacant. Around&nbsp;4.57 million registered voters were able to participate in the by-elections and cast ballots. In total, 3140 polling places had been set up across the 20 seats, including 731 male, 700 female, and 1700 combination polling places. There are currently 20 open seats in the Punjab Assembly, which has a total membership of 371, increasing the total number of MPAs there to 351.

Have you ever heard of a region in the world where an emergency is declared because of rapes? It is happening in Pakistan. In its Punjab province, rape cases are so endemic that the local government has decided to declare an emergency.

While sceptics may say it is a diversionary tactic by the government to shift attention away from local political turmoil, Pakistan's record on sexual violence against women makes this news very easy to believe.

According to information released by the Punjab Information Commission, a total of 2,439 women were raped and 90 were slain during the course of the previous six months in the Punjab region of Pakistan in the name of "family honour."

More than 400 women were raped and more than 2,300 were kidnapped during this time in Lahore, the metropolis of the 110 million-person Punjab province.

Pakistan's Punjab declares emergency to tackle rising crimes against women

The Punjab Police on Sunday said that Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar and his aide Lawrence Bishnoi were responsible for the assassination of Indian-Punjabi rapper Sidhu Moose Wala. The police said that Moosewala’s killing was a result of an inter-gang rivalry.

Brar had posted on his Facebook account that his module in Punjab has killed Sidhu Moose Wala.

"Lawrence Bishnoi gang is involved in this murder. Lucky, member of the gang has taken responsibility from Canada," Punjab DGP VK Bhawra told the media.

Sidhu Moose Wala, whose real name is&nbsp;Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu,&nbsp;was killed in broad daylight in the Mansa district in Punjab inside his Mahindra SUV on Sunday.

<div class="videoWrapper trancodeVideo"><iframe allowfullscreen="" autoplay="1" class="includeVideo" frameborder="0" height="350" src="https://www.wionews.com/videos/who-killed-indian-singer-sidhu-moose-wala-why-483580/embed" style="width:100%;max-width:560px;" width="560"></iframe></div>

According to reports, a gang of 8 fired 30 rounds at the singer's car of which 20 were aimed at Sidhu Moose Wala. Two other people travelling along with the Punjabi singer were also injured in the attack.

Police found bullets from three AK- 94 rifles at the crime site. Use of AK-94 is rare in Punjab.

The singer was declared brought dead, while the two others are undergoing treatment.

The killing came a day after the Punjab Police withdrew the security of 424 people, including Sidhu Moose Wala, after the ruling AAP government’s directive.

Who are Goldy Brar and Lawrence Bishnoi?

Goldy Brar, whose real name is Satinder Singh, is a Canada-based gangster and is wanted in many criminal cases by the Indian authorities.

Earlier this month, a Faridpur court had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Brar for killing the district Youth Congress president, Gurlal Singh Pehalwan.

On May 1, Punjab Police Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) arrested three close aides of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, from Bathinda.

The close aides of Goldy Brar were planning to attack a well-known businessman of the Malwa region to extort money from him.

According to local media reports in Punjab, these criminals, on orders from Brar provided hideouts to absconding gangsters of the NCR region.

Sidhu Moose Wala—a victim of gang rivalry

According to local media reports, the murder of Sidhu Moose Wala was revenge for the killing of Akali Dal leader Vicky Middukhera in Sector 70 Mohali on August 8 last year.

Vicky was allegedly an informer of the Bishnoi gang and was on the radar of other gangsters.

Shaganpreet Singh, the manager of Sidhu Moose Walaa, was named as an accused in the murder of Middukhera. He is absconding and the police have issued a lookout notice for him.

Sidhu Moose Wala, whose real name is Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, was killed in broad daylight in the Mansa district in Punjab inside his Mahindra SUV on Sunday. Hamza Sharif, son of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took charge of Pakistan's Punjab province on Saturday (April 30). Pakistan's Punjab region wields maximum power in Pakistani politics. With Shehbaz Sharif as PM of the country and his son in-charge of Punjab, the politically influential Sharif family has a firm grip on several power centres.

Nepotism and cronyism are deeply entrenched in the Muslim-majority nation of more than 220 million people, with power mostly shared between two families -- the Sharifs and the Bhuttos -- for much of Pakistan's history

Hamza Sharif's ascent to power has come just a few weeks after cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan's ouster from prime ministerial office.
