As per reports, over 150 people have been killed in the protests. However, Iran regime continues to deny responsibility for Amini's death. Schoolgirls are protesting against Iran's leadership.

Iran: Demonstrations enter their fourth week; schoolgirls at the forefront of protests

Iran summoned the British ambassador for the second time since nationwide protests broke out last month, intensifying claims that the West was involved in the unrest that was started by the death of a young woman named Mahsa Amini while she was in police custody, as per the Iranian media on Wednesday.

The turmoil, which poses the largest challenge to the country's religious leadership in years with protestors demanding the Islamic Republic's overthrow, has been blamed on Iran by rivals, notably the United States.

Since Amini, 22, died while being held by morality police after being arrested in Tehran on September 13 for "inappropriate attire," protests have been taking place all throughout Iran.

On Wednesday, videos circulated on social media depicting high school students in Tehran removing their headscarves and yelling "death to (Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali) Khamenei." The videos could not be independently verified by Reuters.

Even though many do not think the Shi'ite religious system is close to being overthrown, the government is undertaking a lethal campaign to quell the discontent 43 years after the country's Islamic Revolution.

According to witnesses who spoke to Reuters, riot police were highly present in various locations on Wednesday, especially in and around colleges, which served as the centre of the protests.

In response to "interventionist comments" made by the British foreign ministry, the British envoy was once again summoned on Tuesday, according to Iranian official media.

Heavy gun battles in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan-Baluchestan have claimed 19 lives, including of a Revolutionary Guards colonel, the state media reported.

"Nineteen people were killed and 20 wounded in the incident," regional governor Hossein Khiabani told the state broadcaster late on Friday.

"Provincial intelligence officer of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Colonel Ali Mousavi was also killed," state television added.

Sistan-Baluchistan, which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan and is one of the poverty-ridden regions, is a battleground for clashes with drug smuggling gangs, as well as rebels from the Baluchi minority and Sunni Muslim extremist groups.

On Friday, local media reported that security forces had returned fire when a police station in the provincial capital Zahedan came under attack by gunmen, reports AFP news agency.

"A number of police members as well as passers-by have been injured in the exchange of fire," the state broadcaster said.

It is unknown whether these recent casualties are linked to the widespread agitation taking place across the state over the Islamic dress code.

The Iranian regime has been blaming "foreign enemies" for the women-led protests that had seen several casualties across the nation.

Earlier, it had detained citizens of Germany, Poland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Sweden who were claimed to be “plotting” the protests against the government.

As the West mounts tensions, Tehran has responded by lashing out at its critics, accusing the United States of exploiting the unrest to try to destabilise Iran.

The agitation began after the death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by Iran's morality police for allegedly violating the mandatory dress code.

It is being claimed that the woman wore the mandatory hijab (an Islamic headscarf) too loosely.

Nine people from several European countries were arrested by the Iranian security forces for allegedly participating in the protests against the custodial death of the 22 years old woman Mahsa Amini last month.

According to reports, the nine people are from Germany, Poland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Sweden and other countries.

"The intelligence ministry on Friday said that they were detained during the riots or while plotting in the background,” the Iranian media said.

The ministry added that the relevant embassies, including Germany, France, UK and Sweden, were warned over the involvement of their 'agents' in the anti-government protests, BBC reported.

For the past three weeks, the country has been rocked by widespread protests, which have, at times, turned violent, resulting in the death of civilians.

Though there is no official figure, the activists from Iran Human Rights (IHR), a Norway-based organisation, have claimed that at least 76 protesters have been killed by Iranian security forces.

Notably, women have been taking to the streets by removing their headscarves in public and cutting their hair in protest against the strict rules on women's dress and general behaviour.

Moreover, reports have claimed that 19 more people died on Friday following a standoff between protesters and police at a police station in Zahedan, the provincial capital of the southeastern Sistan-Baluchistan province.

Rare protest in Chinese city Shenzen after authorities impose snap lockdown over 10 Covid cases

The controversial state funeral of assassinated former prime minister Shinzo Abe concluded on Tuesday evening amidst massive protests in central Tokyo city.

Attended by dignitaries including US Vice President Kamala Harris and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who considered Abe a personal friend, the funeral service took place at Nippon Budokan. More than 4,000 guests were invited, including around 700 foreign officials and ambassadors.

Among Japan's royal family, Crown Prince Akishino and his wife joined the mourners in offering flowers at the end of the service.

Scores of police officers were dispatched to the funeral venue as about 300 protesters gathered to oppose the state government's decision to hold a funeral with "taxpayers' money". Thousands had marched against the funeral, both because of its cost, estimated to be more than that of Queen Elizabeth, and the ruling party's association with Unification Church, which was reportedly a reason for Abe's assassination in the first place.

Iran's foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has been quoted by Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency voicing his displeasure over American support to women-led protests in Iran. The minister said that USA's support to protests is contrary to it diplomatic stance with Iran.

"Peaceful protest is the right of every nation. However, the U.S. involvement in Iran's affairs and support to 'rioters' in implementing their destabilisation project is in clear conflict with Washington's diplomatic messages to Iran regarding the necessity of a nuclear deal and establishing stability in the region," Amirabdollahian said.

Protests have rocked the Islamic Republic after custodial death of 22-year-old Mhasa Amini. She was detained by Iran's morality police which was seeking to inforce the hijab rule.

On Saturday, Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi said that Iran must "deal decisively with those who oppose the country's security and tranquility."

The president "stressed the necessity to distinguish between protest and disturbing public order and security, and called the events a riot," state media reported.

The protests are taking place when Iran is engaged in negotiations with world powers and indirectly with the US for revival of 2015 nuclear deal. Former US preisident Donald Trump unilaterally pulled USA out of the deal in 2018. Any exchange of words between Iran and the US, even over a seemingly distinct issue like women's protest may be viewed as an indicator of strain between the two countries over nuclear deal.

Iran expresses displeasure over US support for Mahsa Amini stir, calls protesters 'rioters'

As it proceeded to hear arguments in the Karnataka hijab ban cases on Wednesday, the Supreme Court noted that allowing girl students to wear hijabs to educational institutions may also be viewed as an opportunity for them to learn about India's diversity at a young age.

The United Nation decried Mahsa Amini's death in custody after she was arrested by Iran's morality police and the violent crackdown on protests over her death, demanding an independent investigation.

Hundreds of students blocked the main airport road in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos on Monday to protest against the disruption to classes caused by a lecturers' strike that has been going on for more than seven months.

Strikes over pay by public university lecturers are common in Nigeria and often go on for months. The latest action started in February.

Chanting and holding placards, students gathered on Lagos International Airport Road, causing gridlock in a city that already struggles with daily traffic congestion and leaving motorists and air passengers stranded.

The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) had at the weekend threatened to occupy major airports to send a message that the students were tired of the pay stand-off between lecturers and President Muhammadu Buhari's government.

"We are here to ground the economy at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport so that the government, the first class people, can be aware that our students are off campus now (for) seven months," Awoyinfa Opeoluwa, NANS spokesperson for the southwest region told Reuters.

Passengers were forced to walk with their luggage in the rain for at least five kilometres to and from the airport. Dozens of armed police watched from a distance.

Demonstrations often turn deadly in Nigeria. The last major protest was against police brutality two years ago, which ended with some protesters being shot and killed.

On Monday, a Thai court sentenced political activist Jatuporn ‘New’ Saeoueng, to two years in prison for allegedly mocking the country’s monarchy by dressing up as the Thai queen. However, the 25-year-old has denied all charges saying that she just wore a traditional dress. The activist was found guilty of supposedly dressing as Queen Suthida during a street protest in Bangkok.

Thailand’s infamous “lese majeste” laws are some of the strictest in the world, which entail that it is a crime to defame or insult King Maha Vajiralongkorn and other royals. These laws have virtually made any criticism against the monarchy a punishable offence. The country’s rights groups have indicated that these laws are often used to quash any protest movement which has demanded the reform of Thailand’s powerful monarchy over the years.

On October 29, 2020, Jatuporn ‘New’ Saeoueng wore a pink dress and walked a “red carpet” at a mock fashion show held in Bangkok, as a fellow protestor held an umbrella over her. The rally was reportedly billed as a counterpoint to a fashion show held by King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s daughter, Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana. Notably, this is one of the several ‘red carpet protests’ held in Bangkok that year which were critical of the monarchy’s lavish lifestyle while citizens were struggling amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

In an interview prior to the hearing, Jatuporn said, “I have no intention to mock anyone. I dressed for myself on that day, for a version of myself in a Thai traditional dress.” According to her lawyer, the 25-year-old is charged with intentionally mocking the monarchy through her actions. Meanwhile, human rights groups in the country have strongly criticised Monday’s verdict. Thai Lawyers for Human Rights indicated that Jatuporn is one of the 210 activists who have been charged with insulting the monarchy in the past two years.

Queen Suthida, is known to dress in elegant silk clothes for public and formal occasions and similar to most royals in the country, often have attendants holding a ceremonial umbrella over them. Initially, Bangkok’s Criminal Court had sentenced the activist to three years in prison for violating the lese majeste law, said the legal aid group, but was immediately reduced to two years. She was also fined 1,000 baht ($27.50).

Jatuporn’s lawyer, Krisadang Nutcharat indicated that her client has denied the charges all along asserting that she usually wears a traditional Thai dress. “But the court sees it as mockery and defamatory towards the monarchy,” said Krisadang, adding that his client who is a transgender will appeal the ruling. Currently, Jatuporn has been sent to the Central Women’s Correctional Institution while she waits for another court’s ruling on her request to be freed on bail.

A statement by Amnesty International read, “The mock fashion show was a satirical take on the political situation of the country – a peaceful public event akin to a street festival with music, food and dancing,” said Kyle Ward, the deputy secretary general of the human rights group. He added, “Participants should not be punished for participating in a peaceful assembly.” The statement also urged the authorities to “immediately drop all charges” saying that these people were merely exercising their human right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

In 2014, the protest movement which had initially targeted the military-backed government for conducting a coup and seizing the power from a democratically elected government also paved the way for speaking critically of Thailand’s monarchy, which was earlier considered taboo. This has led to many demonstrations held in the country since King Maha Vajiralongkorn ascended the throne in 2019, which demand greater scrutiny of the monarchy in Thailand. However, the protest leaders have exercised caution as they ask for a reform of the institution as opposed to complete abolishment.

Thailand: Activist jailed for 2 years for mocking queen by dressing like her at protest

On Monday, September 5, hundreds of university students from Indonesia took to the streets to burn tyres in protest of the government's recent decision to raise fuel prices.

Students across the nation participated in similar demonstrations to call for the cancellation of the fuel price increase.

On Saturday, 3 September, Indonesia increased subsidised fuel prices by almost 30% as the government attempted to cut back on growing subsidies despite the possibility of widespread unrest.

Given that over 80% of the nation's oil firm Pertamina's sales come from subsidised fuel, adjustments to fuel prices in Indonesia will have a significant impact on individuals and small companies.

Months after Jokowi gained government, the last fuel price increase was implemented in 2014, which led to demonstrations all around the archipelago.

The country's economy is only slowly returning to its pre-pandemic level, according to ride-hailing app drivers, who fear that the fuel price increase would further reduce their revenue.

The largest country in Southeast Asia has already increased its 2022 energy subsidies to 502 trillion rupiah ($34 billion), which was three times the initial budget. This increase was prompted by rising oil prices throughout the world and a declining rupiah currency.

The amount required would depend on global crude prices, according to Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, notwithstanding the increase in fuel prices.

Prior to joining OPEC in the 1960s, Indonesia was a significant oil exporter. However, as a result of a decline in oil production, Indonesia is now a net importer of oil.

Thousands of Orthodox Christians marched in Belgrade to protest against holding the EuroPride. The protester marched through the city carrying religious symbols like flags, crosses, and icons while chanting and praying.

The protests came despite the Serbian government's announcing the cancellation of a pan-European LGBTQ event next week. On Saturday (August 27), President Aleksandar Vucic declared, after consulting with his government, that the pride parade would be "postponed or cancelled.’’

According to Vucic, it was difficult to manage everything during a time when the country was already dealing with all kinds of problems, highlighting recent tensions with the former province of Kosovo as well as concerns over energy and food.

Serbian Orthodox Bishop Nikanor praised the government’s decision to cancel the parade. In 2013, Russia outlined a law banning LGBT "propaganda" directed towards minors with punishable fines and imprisonment. Nikanor referred to Putin as "the tsar of the planet."

The bishop further said that the faithful ones are ready to take it to the streets again, putting themselves before those who intend to destroy the values of Serbia.

Thousands of Argentina’s Vice President Cristina Kirchner’s supporters demonstrated in support of her on the streets on Saturday (August 27), days after prosecutors demanded a 12-year prison term and a ban on holding public authority for alleged corruption during her term.

Prosecutors charged the vice president, who also served as the president of the country for two terms, from 2007 to 2015, with defrauding the government and transferring public funds.

It is one of the largest protests that took place in front of the vice president’s residence in the affluent Recoleta area of Buenos Aires, where police had installed fences early in the morning to try to prevent a sizable gathering.

Protests have erupted in China's Henan province over frozen bank accounts and mortgage payments for unfinished homes as the country's economy stagnates. In an effort to boost credit demand and assist the Covid-affected economy, China's central bank unexpectedly reduced a key interest rate for the second time this year and withdrew some cash from the banking sector on Monday. According to economists and observers, the Chinese government is eager to assist the weak economy by allowing a growing policy divergence from other major nations that are sharply hiking interest rates.

Broad credit growth slowed in July in China as new Covid flare-ups, job-related concerns, and a worsening real estate crisis made businesses and consumers reluctant of taking on additional debt. New bank lending fell more than predicted during this time. Since the banking system was already replete with cash and interbank money rates were continuously below policy rates, market players have largely factored in the partial rollover.

The figures point to a confidence crisis among Chinese households and businesses, which poses a new threat to the global economy as demand for everything from Apple iPhones to luxury items declines. At the same time, when commodity prices like iron ore and copper are falling, a deteriorating property downturn is being felt both domestically and internationally.

Large-scale stimulus programmes have been ruled out by China's leadership which has also vowed to stick to the strict 'Zero-Covid' policy that mandates that when major outbreaks take place, as they currently have on the tourist island of Henan, authorities must close down businesses and lock the population in. The growth projection for the remainder of the year has been lowered further below 4 per cent as a result, according to experts.

#china's Shangqiu in Henan (home of prevalent Bank Runs & Developer Absconds), home buyers in large scale protests to condemn resident buildings developers' endless & intentional completion postpone, refuse escrow w/ unfinished properties, demand to resume constructions... pic.twitter.com/pyLBeNxdD3 — Northrop Gundam ∀ (@GundamNorthrop) August 16, 2022 × Broad credit growth slowed in July in China as new Covid flare-ups, job-related concerns, and a worsening real estate crisis made businesses and consumers reluctant of taking on additional debt. According to a statement released on Sunday by Ranil Wickremesinghe's office, the new president of Sri Lanka assured ambassadors this week that nonviolent demonstrations against his administration will be permitted to continue, even in the country's commercial centre of Colombo. A portion of an anti-government demonstration camp outside the presidential secretariat was dismantled by hundreds of security forces in a dawn raid on Friday, sparking concerns about a bigger crackdown by Wickremesinghe, who had just been sworn in.

"President Ranil Wickremesinghe has reaffirmed Sri Lanka's commitment to upholding the rights of peaceful, non-violent assembly. The Diplomats were also briefed on the measures being taken to ensure that non-violent protests were allowed to proceed within the city without endangering property or lives," his office said in a statement, describing a meeting with Colombo-based envoys, as reported by Reuters.
