Several international students in Canada are staging indefinite protests amid a growing threat of their potential removal from the country. The demonstration, which began in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) this week, is expected to continue till the deportation process is stopped.

Their entry into the country was enabled by Indian agents using deceitful documentation.

These students had majorly arrived in the country between the years 2017 and 2019 to pursue higher education. They were informed that their admission offer letters were fake at the time they applied for permanent residency in Canada and their documents were investigated.

Now, at least 700 students are facing removal from the country and have been served with deportation letters by the Canadian Border Security Agency earlier this year.

These students started the protest at a makeshift location on Airport Road in Mississauga and set up a temporary shelter in the region as the protest was launched on Monday, as per a report by Hindustan Times.

The majority of the ones affected were represented by the agent Brijesh Mishra of the Jalandhar-based counselling firm EMSA Education and Migration Services Australia.

The former students said that they were being tormented for no fault of theirs.

This year in the month of March, they wrote an open letter under the banner of Victim Students saying, “We are desperate for justice; we are victims of fraud; we have no criminal level but facing a removal order.”

The agitation was triggered by an expulsion order received by Lovepreet Singh.

Singh, who hails from Mohali in Punjab, has been asked to exit the country by June 13.

Hindustan Times cited one of the impacted students Inder Singh as saying, “We will continue protesting till Lovepreet’s deportation on June 13 is cancelled and a solution is found to our cases.”

The location chosen for the protest is close to a CBSA office and the ex-students plan a large demonstration on Friday in front of that centre.

At least 30 more students are facing expulsion proceedings, though all cases have not yet escalated to the final order being passed. Another 130 or so cases are being probed.

Another student Karamjeet Kaur from Edmonton, hailing from Faridkot in Punjab, was facing expulsion on May 30 but has been granted a temporary stay that her safety would be compromised if she was sent back to India.

The suspension will continue till a judicial review is undertaken in this concern.

A 24-year-old former Marine who put Jordan Neely, a subway rider in New York City, in a fatal chokehold has defended his actions, claiming he and the other commuters were acting in self-defence. Daniel Penny sent his sympathies to Neely's family in a statement sent by his lawyers on Friday.

Homicide has been identified as the reason for his death. His death has not yet been the subject of any charges, reported the BBC.

The incident has raised awareness of criminal activity and homelessness in public transport.

"We would first, like to express, on behalf of Daniel Penny, our condolences to those close to Mr Neely," his lawyers said in a statement issued to US media.

Neely, a 30-year-old homeless impersonator of Michael Jackson, "had a documented history of violent and erratic behaviour," according to the statement, which they claimed was "the apparent result of ongoing and untreated, mental illness."

"Daniel never intended to harm Mr Neely and could not have foreseen his untimely death," it added.

Police and the Manhattan district attorney are presently considering whether to file charges. Homicide is defined as a death brought on by another person, however, it is not necessarily a murder.

The incident occurred on Monday late afternoon on the F-line train in Manhattan's SoHo neighbourhood.

The 30-year-old man was allegedly acting abnormally, and the former Marine is shown holding him around the neck for two minutes and 55 seconds in a video that was recorded on the train by a freelance journalist.

His arms are also seen being restrained by two other passengers. The man is seen afterwards lying motionless on the ground after all three of them eventually released go of him.

During the altercation with Neely, Penny instructed other passengers to dial 911, according to police, according to CBS News, the BBC's US partner.

The grand jury will reportedly convene the next week to decide whether there is sufficient proof to file charges, according to the network. Penny would likely contend that his response was appropriate in order to defend himself if charges are filed.

Experts told the New York Times that in order for Neely to be found guilty, the prosecution must demonstrate that Neely employed deadly force without Neely being believed to have been similarly prepared.

After the chokehold killing, protests were conducted calling for an arrest to be made.

The statement from Penny's attorneys said, "We hope that this terrible event will lead to a fresh commitment by our elected representatives to address the mental health problem on our streets and that this horrific tragedy will serve as a wake-up call for the public.

A late-night scuffle broke out between protesting wrestlers and the police in the Indian capital city, Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Wednesday (May 3). According to media reports, the alleged incident also caused some protesters to sustain head injuries.

Three people including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti were detained after the incident, said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Pranav Tayal. According to the DCP, a group of protesters led by an AAP leader reached the protest site without due permission on Wednesday evening.

The protesters “came to the protest site along with folding beds without permission. When we intervened, the supporters became aggressive and tried to get the beds out of the truck,” said Tayal, as quoted by ANI. He added, “Subsequently, a minor altercation took place and Somnath Bharti along with 2 others were detained.”

This comes as top wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and others, have been protesting against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI)’s chief Brij Bhushan Singh after seven female wrestlers, including a minor, have complained against Singh for alleged sexual harassment and called for his arrest.

The wrestlers have been staging a sit-in at Jantar Mantar since April 23 following the allegations and demanded criminal action against Bhushan. The Delhi Police has since filed two FIRs against the WFI president, on Friday on the allegations.

In a video being circulated on social media platforms, some of the protesters can be heard accusing police personnel of attacking two wrestlers under the influence of alcohol, reported news agency PTI.

After the incident, wrestler Bajrang Punia told ANI, “We're in need of the support of the whole country, everyone must come to Delhi. Police using force against us, abusing women and doing nothing against Brijbhushan.”

Another senior police officer said, “There were a few men who tried bringing cots to the protest site. When the policemen deployed at the spot asked them about the cots, they got aggressive and the protesters joined them,” reported PTI.

The officer also said, “They wrongfully restrained a policeman and accused him of being drunk, which was not the case. Police personnel are at the site and the situation is now under control. No protester was beaten up.”

Meanwhile, former wrestler Rajveer told PTI, “The mattresses got wet due to rain, so we were bringing folding beds for sleeping, but the police did not allow that. Drunk policeman Dharemendra abused Vinesh Phogat and got involved in a scuffle with us.”

“They started hitting us. Bajrang Punia's brother-in-law Dushyant and Rahul suffered head injuries. The police did not even let doctors reach the site. Even the women constables were misbehaving with us,” he said.

Punia’s wife Sangeeta, who claims that she was pushed around by policemen, has also called for farmers and their leaders to assemble at the protest site on Thursday morning.

The protests come after three months ago, prominent wrestlers came forward with sexual assault allegations against the WFI chief. Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has since announced the formation of an oversight committee to probe the allegations levelled against WFI and other coaches.

He added, “Subsequently, a minor altercation took place and Somnath Bharti along with 2 others were detained.” This comes as top wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and others, have been protesting against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI)’s chief Brij Bhushan Singh after seven female wrestlers, including a minor, have complained against Singh for alleged sexual harassment and called for his arrest. #WATCH | Delhi: A scuffle breaks out between protesting wrestlers and Delhi Police at Jantar Mantar pic.twitter.com/gzPJiPYuUU — ANI (@ANI) May 3, 2023 × After the incident, wrestler Bajrang Punia told ANI, “We're in need of the support of the whole country, everyone must come to Delhi. Police using force against us, abusing women and doing nothing against Brijbhushan.” Another senior police officer said, “There were a few men who tried bringing cots to the protest site. When the policemen deployed at the spot asked them about the cots, they got aggressive and the protesters joined them,” reported PTI. The officer also said, “They wrongfully restrained a policeman and accused him of being drunk, which was not the case. Police personnel are at the site and the situation is now under control. No protester was beaten up.” Meanwhile, former wrestler Rajveer told PTI, “The mattresses got wet due to rain, so we were bringing folding beds for sleeping, but the police did not allow that. Drunk policeman Dharemendra abused Vinesh Phogat and got involved in a scuffle with us.” “They started hitting us. WATCH | Delhi: Three detained after ‘minor altercation’ between police, protesting wrestlers at Jantar Mantar

Three Iranian female journalists who are currently detained received the UN's top award for press freedom on Tuesday evening "for their commitment to truth and accountability."

The winners are Elaheh Mohammadi, who wrote about Mahsa Amini's funeral, and Niloufar Hamedi, who broke the news that the 22-year-old died in morality police custody last September while wearing her headscarf too loosely, reported the Associated Press.

In dozens of Iranian cities, Amini's passing sparked months-long protests. One of the most significant threats to the Islamic Republic since the 2009 Green Movement rallies that drew millions of people to the streets was presented by the demonstrations.

The third winner is Narges Mohammadi, who has worked as a journalist for several years and is known for her activities as an activist.

The UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization World Press Freedom Prize is coined for Guillermo Cano, a Colombian journalist who was assassinated in front of the offices of his newspaper El Espectador in Bogota on Dec. 17, 1986. Since 1997, the prize has been presented on May 3 to coincide with the World Press Freedom Day.

UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay announced the winners at a ceremony in New York, saying: “Now more than ever, it is important to pay tribute to all women journalists who are prevented from doing their jobs and who face threats and attacks on their personal safety.”

Zainab Salbi, chair of the international jury of media professionals that finalised the winners, said the brave work of the three winners “led to a historical women-led revolution.”

“They paid a hefty price for their commitment to report on and convey the truth,” Salbi said. “And for that, we are committed to honouring them and ensuring their voices will continue to echo worldwide until they are safe and free,” she added.

Iran's judiciary revealed in late April that Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi, two reporters who broke the news of Amini's death, had been charged with working with the US, violating national security, and spreading "propaganda" against the system.

Although nearly 100 journalists have been detained amid the protests, Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi's reporting was essential in the days following the death of Amini to spread awareness of the outrage that followed. Mohammadi and Hamedi both work for the reformist journal Ham-Mihan, whereas Hamedi works for the reformist newspaper Shargh.

Human rights activists in Iran estimate that at least 529 people have died during protests since they started.

Narges Mohammadi has been arrested and imprisoned by the government numerous times, and according to UNESCO, she is now in Evin Prison serving a 16-year term. She has received recognition from other countries for her efforts, particularly her opposition to the death sentence in Iran, which is still the world's leading executioner.

She is the deputy director of the Defenders of Human Rights Centre, a civil society group based in Tehran, according to UNESCO. She also continues to publish articles from prison and has spoken with other women prisoners for her book, "White Torture," according to the UN office.

Iran: Three women journalists jailed after Mahsa Amini’s death win UN’s top press freedom award

Six days after India's elite wrestlers took to the streets demanding a First Information Report (FIR) be filed against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Delhi Police agreed to lodge the FIR on Friday, bringing what the wrestlers termed their "first victory in quest for justice."

Ahead of a UN summit that would take place next week, Afghan women rallied in Kabul on Saturday, defying a crackdown on dissent. They demanded that other countries refrain from formally recognising the Taliban regime.

Since the Taliban took back control in 2021, protesters who voiced opposition to growing restrictions on women's rights have been physically assaulted or imprisoned, and security forces have fired shots into the air to break up some demonstrations.

However, sporadic gatherings organised by small groups of women have continued.

In preparation of a summit in Doha, which the UN claims will address a "durable way forward" for the country, some 25 people marched through a residential area of the Afghan capital on Saturday.

The women chanted during the march, which lasted barely more than 10 minutes and ended without a run-in with security forces.

Their chants included "Afghan people, hostages of Taliban" and "We will fight, we will die, we will take our rights".

Since the Taliban took over control after the withdrawal of US soldiers from Afghanistan in 2021, no country has yet recognised the administration as legitimate.

Only Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia officially recognised the former Taliban government, which governed from 1996 to 2001.

NGOs, relief organisations, and diplomats are all split on the subject at the moment.

Tens of thousands of Israelis demonstrated in Jerusalem on Thursday to show support for controversial planned legislation by the far-right coalition government which would see the country's highest court stripped of much of its powers.

Thousands rally in Jerusalem in favor of planned judicial overhaul

Thousands of Israelis took to the streets on Saturday to protest against the judicial overhaul plan of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu which will tighten the government's control on the Supreme Court.

The protest was held ahead of the country's independence day, which will mark the completion of 75 years since the Jewish state was established.

Last month, the plans for judicial reform were halted by the government in the wake of mass demonstrations and strikes. The latest protest against the government is being planned as Israelis are preparing to mark both Israeli independence day and Israeli memorial day, which will commemorate the people who lost their lives in the country's wars and terror attacks.

"My father was killed on Yom Kippur War," said 53-year-old photographer Miri Pinchuk while speaking to Reuters. "He gave his life for this country because he was raised up also with the belief that it's going to be a democracy,” he added.

The proposals would be given effective control to the government over the appointment of judges in the Supreme Court and will give power to the parliament to override the decisions taken by the court. The proposed judicial reforms have led to one of the biggest domestic crises in the recent history of Israel.

The activist judges have been accused by the government of increasingly usurping the parliament's role. The government claims that a judicial overhaul is required to restore the balance between the elected politicians and the judiciary.

Critics said that it will remove important checks and balances underpinning a democratic country and hand unchecked power to the government.

"There is this sentence from the bible, from David's lamentation, saying 'How heroes fell'. And actually, the question now turns to instead of 'How heroes fell?', to 'For what?'," said 63-year-old lawyer David Gilat while speaking to Reuters.

Israel's public broadcaster released a poll on Friday which found that the proposed plans are deeply unpopular among people, with 53 per cent stating that they believe the judicial reforms will harm the country.

In the poll, around 60 per cent of the citizens said that the government is not representing them while 48 per cent believe that the country's situation will only deteriorate in future.

For the 16th week consecutively, crowds gathered in central Tel Aviv to show their defiance against the plans of judicial reform which they feel is an existential threat to the democracy of Israel.

Iraqi lawmakers, on Monday (March 27), passed controversial amendments to the elections law which are said to have weakened the chances for smaller parties and independent candidates to win seats in future polls. The country has been facing unrest over the issues surrounding its political system which many have called corrupt.

More than 560 protesters and security personnel have lost their lives since 2019 amid the wave of unrest, reported Reuters. The amendments increase the size of electoral districts and reverse key articles passed ahead of the 2021 federal election which would now lead to redrawing of electoral maps to have Iraq return to one electoral district per each governorate.

The bill was passed by a 206-12 vote in the 329-seat parliament, while others were absent during the hours-long session. The vote which began late Sunday had previously been stalled for weeks by several Iraqi political blocs and independent parliamentarians who have rejected this amendment.

Independent MPs who objected to the law, staged a walkout during the previous session, causing it to be postponed over a lack of quorum. The lawmakers opposing the bills did something similar overnight as they began protesting and disturbed the count before security forces escorted them out of the parliament, reported Al Jazeera.

“Large parties controlling parliament plan to consolidate their powers and remove independents. They want to smash us,” said independent MP Hadi al-Salami, as per Reuters. The amendments also come after anti-government protests which demanded fairer election law and the ouster of Iraq’s ruling elite. According to media reports, on Saturday, hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Baghdad against the new election law amendments.

Kenyans were preparing for a fresh round of anti-government protests over the increasing cost of living on Monday after the opposition promised to take action even after a police ban.

Veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga appealed to citizens to take to the streets every Thursday and Monday, a week after the protests had turned violent and various parts of Nairobi were paralysed.

However, on Sunday, the police announced a ban on the rallies. "We will not allow violent demonstrations," said Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome.

"The demonstrations they plan tomorrow (Monday) are illegal and will not be allowed,” he added.

A university student was killed and 31 officers had suffered injuries in a police fire during the previous Monday's clashes as running battles took place between demonstrators and riot police in Nairobi as well as opposition strongholds in western Kenya.

Police arrested around 200 people which included various senior opposition politicians while protesters, including their own convoy of Odinga, were hit with water cannons and tear gas.

This was the first major political unrest since incumbent President William Ruto came to power around six months ago after Odinga was defeated in an election that his rivals alleged was "stolen".

Even after the police ban, Odinga appealed to the Kenyans on Sunday to take part in what he called “the mother of all demonstrations".

"I want to tell Ruto and the IG Koome that we are not going to be intimidated. We are not going to fear tear gas and police,” he added. President Ruto appealed to his rival to stop the action.

"I am telling Raila Odinga that if he has a problem with me, he should face me and stop terrorising the country," he stated on Thursday.

"Stop paralysing the businesses of mama mboga, matatu and other Kenyans," he added, referring to private minibus operators and women stallholders.

On Monday, Ruto will be leaving for a four-day official trip to Belgium and Germany during which he will hold meetings with EU and national leaders.

Kenyans have been struggling to buy food by the end of the day as they are battling soaring prices for basic goods and declining local currency along with a record which has left millions hungry.

Kenya prepares for fresh protests amid police ban

Hong Kong police, on Sunday (March 26), permitted a small protest where dozens of people took part since major COVID-19-related restrictions were lifted. The demonstration which took place under tight restrictions is also one of the first ones since the enactment of a sweeping National Security Law (NSL) in 2020. Several images of the protest show people wearing numbered badges around their necks and were also reportedly barred from face masks.

The protesters on Sunday chanted slogans against the proposed land reclamation and rubbish processing facilities and were from the eastern district of Tseung Kwan O where the project is to be built. The rules imposed by the police citing security reasons come as the financial hub has sought to return to normalcy after years of Covid-related restrictions and political turmoil.

Prior to China imposing the national security law, in a bid to quash dissent, Hong Kong was rocked by pro-democracy unrest. Additionally, given the Covid-related restrictions like the social-distancing measures there have been fewer smaller protests in the financial hub.

The police had also capped the number of demonstrators to 100 which garnered criticism from some. “We need to have a more free-spirited protest culture,” James Ockenden, a 49-year-old marching with his three children, told Reuters. He added, “But this is all pre-arranged and numbered and it just destroys the culture and will put people off from coming for sure.”

Similarly, a retired civil servant, who did not wish to be identified, called the arrangements “ridiculous” and told AFP, “I am here to join a march, not a shame parade”. The turnout at Sunday’s protest was around 80 or so people who expressed their opposition to the proposed plans, said the organisers.

Furthermore, the participants on Sunday were also asked not to wear all-black, something protesters did during the 2019 pro-democracy demonstrations, as they walked in a cordoned-off moving line in the rain amid heavy police presence.

Additionally, the police had also granted a “no objection” letter to the organisers on the condition that they would not violate national security laws like seditious displays or speech. A 70-year-old retiree, Theresa Wang, also told AP how this is “a bit weird” but still acceptable as they adjust to the “new Hong Kong.”

Thousands of protesters took to streets of Prague on Saturday to protest against the Czech government over high inflation and country's military support to Ukraine. The Czech Republic has been battling record inflation for a year. The inflation has mainly been caused because of spike in energy prices due to war in Ukraine.

In February, annual inflation in the EU and NATO member state of 10.5 million people reached 16.7 percent.
Saturday's "Czechia against poverty" rally was organised by a new political party.

"We have gathered here today to take a stand against this poverty," Jindrich Rajchl, a lawyer leading the non-parliamentary PRO party, told the crowd in central Wenceslas Square.

The protesters demanded a resignation from centre-right government led by Petr Fiala, while Rajchl said he wanted leaders who "care about the interests of Czech citizens first".

Critics accuse Fiala's government of caring more about Ukraine with substantial military and humanitarian aid sent to the war-torn country since the invasion started in February 2022.

Protesters also slammed NATO, with Czech media reporting a protester with a loudspeaker called on the crowd to tear down a Ukrainian flag from the National Museum building at the top of Wenceslas Square.
