Jair Bolsonaro has used every trick in his sleeve to discredit the recent general elections where he lost to his rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

He has frequently raised doubts on the efficacy of Brazil's institutions—accusing the Supreme Court of being politically against him, and the voting system of being prone to fraud—and has successfully managed to trick his supporters into believing that the entire system was against him.

And though the majority of the country has moved on, Bolsonaro still thinks that he is the president of Brazil.

The Twitter bio of the 67-year-old still shows that he is the “President of the Federative Republic of Brazil,” further indicating that he has not accepted defeat, even though he has been active on the social media app.

The far-right leader left for the US about 10 days ago and refused to take part in the handover of power to incoming Lula last week.

Meanwhile, security forces have been clamping down on supporters of Bolsonaro who stormed government buildings in Brasília a few days ago. They have begun to dismantle protest camps outside the army’s headquarters in the capital and at other sites.

Scores of people holding a demonstration at a factory producing COVID-19 antigen kits clashed with the police, several videos that went viral on social media on Sunday showed.

According to Reuters news agency, the incident took place on Saturday when the workers were protesting for wages and against layoff by the manufacturer, Zybio, in the central municipality of Chongqing.

Police and Zybio are yet to respond to this situation, but several media outlets reported that the protest pertained to wage-related issues and the layoffs of workers who were recruited recently.

"All the workers' demands are economic in nature," said a man in one video who called himself a "Marxist-Leninist-Maoist", reports AFP news agency. He asserted that their protest had no political undertones and was purely against the management.

One of the clips showed people hurling throwing traffic cones, boxes and stools at police carrying riot shields. While another video, posted on Twitter and Douyin, showed dozens of protesters chanting "return our money".

The Taliban regime grabbed power immediately after US-led coalition forces left Afghanistan last year. Initially, the Taliban sought to assure the world that it will not revert to its radical ways as seen during their previous rule in late 1990s. They even said publicly that women would be allowed to attend universities.

However, the regime slowly began to roll back social progress that had been achieved in two decades under US-supported regime. Primary schools for girls were shut and unreasonable social restrictions on women made return.

The latest in the backward journey was Taliban's decision to prohibit women from going to universities.

The decision has already drawn sharp reactions from the United States and the United Nations

"It's another very troubling move and it's difficult to imagine how the country can develop, deal with all of the challenges that it has, without active participation of women and the education of women," said Stephen Dujarric, United Nations spokesperson.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he was "deeply dismayed" due to the development.

"Deeply dismayed by the announcement from the Taliban denying women the right to a university education. Afghan women deserve better. Afghanistan deserves better," he said.

"The Taliban have just definitively set back their objective of being accepted by the international community."

The Taliban regime in Afghanistan is increasingly drawing global criticism after their recent stance of not allowing women to attend universities. In response to this, Nida Mohammad Nadim, the Taliban's minister of higher education, broke his silence on Thursday and stated that the ban on women attending universities was put in place to prevent the mixing of the genders as well as because he thought some subjects being taught went against the teachings of Islam.

Iran's Supreme Court orders retrial of protester on death row for agitation

Peru lawmakers have voted to move up the general elections from 2026 to April 2024 amidst deadly protests sparked by the ouster and arrest of former president Pedro Castillo.

On Tuesday, the proposal got a thumping majority of 93 votes against 30 in the Congress, with one abstention.

The proposal further stipulated that the incumbent President Dina Boluarte hand power to the winner of those elections in July 2024.

Now, the proposal must be ratified in the next annual legislative session for it to take effect.

For weeks, the protesters have been calling for the dissolution of the new government under recently elected president Dina Boluarte and early elections, following the removal of Castillo.

The ex-leader was removed from office and detained earlier this month after trying to dissolve Congress to rule by decree. The move did not sit well with his supporters who took to the streets against the present government.

At least 21 people have died and more than 650 were injured in the unrest even as armed forces have been deployed to quell the protests. Despite a state of emergency declared, the agitation has been continuing.

A delegation from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights arrived in Lima on Tuesday to meet with authorities as part of a fact-finding mission on the volatile political situation.

Peru orders Mexican envoy to leave

Meanwhile, the Peru government declared Mexico’s ambassador “persona non grata” and asked him to leave the country within 72 hours after the country’s government offered asylum to Castillo’s family members.

The ministry made the decision on Tuesday after Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador made comments about Peru’s political situation, which was found to be “unacceptable interference in internal affairs, in clear violation to the principle of non-intervention,” a statement read, reports CNN.

The decision comes after Mexico’s Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said he had offered asylum to Castillo’s family, who were already in the Mexican embassy in the capital Lima.

The police arrested 44 people citing their involvement in violent protests against the rising fuel prices in Jordan on Saturday. The protests were held all around the country and ended up claiming the life of a senior police official, according to Jordan’s security agency.

"Forty-four people who participated in the riots in a number of regions in the kingdom have been arrested and will be brought before the courts," the Public Security Directorate said.

The official statement added that additional forces were deployed by the government in order to keep the situation in control and accused “outlaws and vandals” of causing violence.

The senior official, who was killed in the town of Al-Husseiniya, was identified as Colonel Abdul Razzaq Dalabeh. He was serving as the deputy police chief of Maan province in Jordan.

The fuel prices have skyrocketed in the past year with small businesses facing the brunt of the resultant inflation. The fuel used by trucks and buses has also doubled in price and that is the reason why transport companies have been taking active part in the protests against the price rise.

While the authorities have already announced financial aid for the involved parties, the implementation has left a lot to be desired for the public.

Starbucks workers around the US are gearing up for a three-day walkout that will start on Friday as part of their effort to unionise the coffee chain's stores. Over 1,000 baristas at 100 outlets, according to Starbucks Workers United, the labour union leading the operation, plan to strike. The longest strike of the one-year unionisation effort will occur this week. The second large strike by Starbucks US employees in the past month. On 17 November, 110 Starbucks workers went on a one-day strike. The company's annual Red Cup Day, when it provides reusable cups to customers who order holiday drinks, coincided with that campaign.

More than 264 of Starbucks’ 9,000 company-run US stores have been planning to unionise since late 2021. Starbucks condemns the unionization effort, saying the company functions better when it works directly with employees, without a union. But the company said last month that it respects employees’ lawful right to protest.

The company's first unionised location in Seattle, according to Workers United, was just shut down by Starbucks. According to Starbucks, the location was shut down for security concerns. About 50 outlets have started contract negotiations between Starbucks and the union, but no agreements have been reached.

It has been a controversial procedure. Since late last year, Workers United has filed at least 446 allegations of unfair labour practises against Starbucks with the National Labour Relations Board, alleging among other things that the business fired labour organisers and refused to engage in negotiations. The union has been accused of violating negotiation guidelines by taping sessions and posting the tapes online, according to the company, which has filed 47 complaints against the union.

So far, the labour protests haven’t appeared to diminish Starbucks’ sales. Starbucks said in November that its revenue increased 3 per cent to a record $8.41 billion in the July-September months.
