France was engulfed in violent unrest after the point-blank shooting of 17-year-old Nahel by French Police over a traffic infraction on the 27th of June. In six successive nights of violence, more than 5,000 cars were torched, and 99 town halls were attacked, along with schools, police stations, and other public institutions. 3,354 people were arrested over a week, the average age of arrested being merely 17. The killing seems to have tapped a deep vein of resentment of law enforcement agencies, especially in the poor and racially mixed suburbs of major French cities known as banlieues. The unrest though, so far at least, has failed to prompt the government to soul-searching on race, something that was witnessed in the United States during the Black Lives Matter protests. Adding insult to injury, a crowdfunding campaign spearheaded by a far-right media personality, raised 1.4 million euros for the family of the policeman who shot the teenager. Compare this with the fundraising pledges for Nahel's family which stood at 360,000 Euros. Quite evidently, there are issues of race, identity, and nationalism at play here rather than just one policeman gone rogue. Mohammed Saleh explores.

‘Confettigate': Just Stop Oil deny disrupting former UK minister George Osborne’s wedding

In 2022, French President Emmanuel Macron won the election against his rival Marine Le Pen to secure five years more years. In 2023, Macron enrages France by forcing through pension bill with no vote. With the French people taking to the streets to protest against the Macron-led government, the president’s popularity seems to be slowly dwindling away. Has Macron failed his own people?

Has Macron failed his own people?

France has been hit by violent protests many times before. French people have a culture of protesting on the streets to express their resentment against things they don’t agree with. It’s the only way they think they are heard. From 'Yellow Vest' protests in 2018 to 'May Day' protests in 2023 – let’s look at some of the major protests that took France by storm in the last few years.

Incidents of civil unrest in France

On the 27th of June, Nahel M died of bullet wounds in his chest after he tried to drive off during a police traffic check. The incident sparked massive protests, anger, and riots across France. Parallels are being drawn between the killings of Nahel M and George Floyd, a black man who was suffocated to death by the American police back in 2020. Is France facing its George Floyd moment?

The killing of a teenager by a police officer in France has led to clashes for five days in a row, though the scale of the violence has partially decreased and there are still many issues to resolve. French President Emmanuel Macron has evaluated the steps taken so far to prevent further escalation of the violence.

Morning brief: France protests, Joe Biden's new measures for student loan relief, and more

France has been rocked by massive protests…after the killing of a 17-year old by a police official. The condition is such that the French Special Forces have been deployed, 45,000 police officers and armored vehicles have been positioned across France. What started as a violent protest in major French cities has spilt over to Belgium already. Will the protest affect Europe at large? Nearly 1000 people have been arrested so far as riots surge in the French cities of Marseille and Lyon which are badly hit. Gun stores have been looted, several fires have been lit, there is massive looting in premium brand stores , shopping malls are being attacked as well. The French President has convened a second crisis meeting with his cabinet in two days…as the situation spirals out of control.

After the fatal police shooting of a 17-year-old boy, 45 000 officers and light armoured vehicles have been deployed in France to deal with the fourth night of violent protests. President Emmanuel Macron has so far refrained from issuing a state of emergency, but he has left an EU summit in Brussels early to attend his second cabinet crisis meeting in two days.

France was bracing for further unrest on Wednesday evening following the death of a 17-year-old boy who was allegedly shot by police during a traffic stop.

Protests flare near Paris after 17-year-old shot dead during police traffic stop

<p>France braced itself for more violent protests on Wednesday as French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday said that the deadly shooting of a teen by the police during a traffic stop this week was "inexplicable" and "unforgivable".</p>

<p>"A teenager was killed. That is inexplicable and unforgivable. Nothing can justify the death of a young person," said Macron, during a visit to the Mediterranean city Marseille, stating that the case had "moved the entire nation" and expressing "respect and affection" for the grieving family members of the 17-year-old Nael.</p>

<p>The government stated that 2,000 riot police will be deployed by them to deal with any unrest. The step has been taken a day after a 17-year-old was shot in the chest by a police officer who was then seen lying about the circumstances of the killing.</p>

<p>Unrest already sparked in various suburbs of Paris overnight after the shooting. Outrage and grief were expressed by the celebrities and politicians at the teenager's death.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Two policemen on Tuesday had pulled over the teenager, who was identified as Nael M., for breaking traffic rules, said prosecutors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Initially, the police had reported that the teenager was shot by an officer after he tried to drive his car at him, however, the video of the incident shared on social media contradicted the claims.</p>

<h2><strong>Reality of the footage&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>In the footage, two policemen were seen standing at the side of a stationary car and one officer was seen pointing the gun at the driver. A person was heard as saying, "You are going to get a bullet in the head."</p>

<p>The officer has then seen firing point blank as the teenager's car drove off abruptly. The car drove a few dozen metres and then crashed and the driver died after some time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The suburb of Paris was hit by immediate protests after the death of the teenager. The protesters set fire to a music school and bins as tear gas was used by the police to disperse the crowd.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin on Wednesday said that the police arrested 31 people overnight, while 24 police officers suffered slight injuries and nearly 40 cars were torched.</p>

France braced itself for more violent protests on Wednesday as French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday said that the deadly shooting of a teen by the police during a traffic stop this week was "inexplicable" and "unforgivable". "A teenager was killed. That is inexplicable and unforgivable. Nothing can justify the death of a young person," said Macron, during a visit to the Mediterranean city Marseille, stating that the case had "moved the entire nation" and expressing "respect and affection" for the grieving family members of the 17-year-old Nael. The government stated that 2,000 riot police will be deployed by them to deal with any unrest. The step has been taken a day after a 17-year-old was shot in the chest by a police officer who was then seen lying about the circumstances of the killing. ALSO READ | French police officer detained on homicide charges after killing teenager for fleeing traffic stop Unrest already sparked in various suburbs of Paris overnight after the shooting. Outrage and grief were expressed by the celebrities and politicians at the teenager's death. Two policemen on Tuesday had pulled over the teenager, who was identified as Nael M., for breaking traffic rules, said prosecutors. Initially, the police had reported that the teenager was shot by an officer after he tried to drive his car at him, however, the video of the incident shared on social media contradicted the claims. Reality of the footage In the footage, two policemen were seen standing at the side of a stationary car and one officer was seen pointing the gun at the driver. A person was heard as saying, "You are going to get a bullet in the head." The officer has then seen firing point blank as the teenager's car drove off abruptly. The car drove a few dozen metres and then crashed and the driver died after some time. The suburb of Paris was hit by immediate protests after the death of the teenager. The protesters set fire to a music school and bins as tear gas was used by the police to disperse the crowd. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin on Wednesday said that the police arrested 31 people overnight, while 24 police officers suffered slight injuries and nearly 40 cars were torched.
