Cyprus police, on Saturday (September 2) said that they have arrested 13 people after an anti-migrant march turned violent and a mob smashed storefronts and set numerous trash bins on fire in the coastal resort city of Limassol. The police said that some five people were injured after being assaulted during Friday night’s protest that involved some 500 people.

What happened?

According to reports, a group of people wearing hoods attacked migrants and their businesses in Limassol on Friday evening.

A report by the Associated Press citing amateur video broadcast on local news outlets and websites said several damaged storefronts, trash bins burning in the street and a group of protesters chanting anti-immigrant slogans.

Police also used water cannons to disperse protesters, some of whom even held a banner that read “Refugees not welcome,” reported AFP.

This comes amid reported tensions over an influx of migrants on the east Mediterranean island nation where officials are struggling to cope with the numbers.

Cyprus, a European Union member, has said that it is the “front-line country” on the Mediterranean migrant route with the latest data showing that the island nation has the highest number of first-time asylum applications than the rest of the 27-member countries of the bloc.

According to officials in Cyprus, migrants comprise six per cent of their population more than five times that of the average in other EU member nations.

Injuries and arrests

According to the police, at least five people were injured due to the unrest that broke out during Friday night’s march. All five have since been treated in the hospital and released.

Officers also arrested 13 people, including the alleged organiser of the march.

‘Images of shame’: Cyprus president

After the violence, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides condemned what he called “images of shame,” and said that the violence was the product of a group of petty criminals with no real connection to the migration situation.

“There is not much that can be said other than the embarrassing images we have seen,” a visibly angry Christodoulides told reporters, as quoted by AFP.

He added, “They have nothing to do with dealing with immigration. If all those involved (in the Limassol incidents) loved or cared about our country, they would not have taken such actions which, above all, insult our country.”

Meanwhile, a pro-immigrant demonstration has been planned for Saturday evening, as per AP.

Previous violence

The incident on Friday night also comes days after a group of Greek Cypriots wearing hoods and armed with bats attempted to attack protesting Syrians in a small village where tensions have recently run high between locals and migrants.

The police had also arrested some two dozen people in connection with that violence which broke out four days ago in the southeastern village of Chloraka where parallel protests by some 250 Syrians and an equal number of Greek Cypriots degenerated into violence, reported the AP.

Thousands of furious protesters chanting anti-government slogans marched in Bangladesh on Monday hours after a powerful jailed Islamist opposition leader died of a heart attack aged 83, officials said.

Delwar Hossain Sayedee, vice president of the opposition Jamaat-e-Islami party, died in a prison hospital early Monday evening, just over a decade since his conviction by a controversial war crimes court triggered the deadliest political violence in the country's history.

Thousands of mourners and supporters of Sayedee rallied outside the hospital after his death, chanting "Allahu akbar", or "God is greatest", with large numbers of police deployed.

"We won't let the blood of Sayedee go in vain", supporters shouted, with many blaming the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which is preparing for key general elections slated for January.

Hospital authorities said Sayedee was admitted to the health facility after suffering a heart attack in Kashimpur Prison outside the capital Dhaka on Sunday.

"He faced another heart attack today (Monday) at 6.45 pm (1245 GMT) and died at 8.40 pm," hospital director Brigadier General Rezaur Rahman told AFP, adding he had had five stents inserted into his arteries.

Jamaat-e-Islami announced Sayedee's death on its Facebook page, where it accused the authorities of "slowly turning him into a martyr without treatment in the prison".

Sayedee was sentenced to death in 2013 by a war-crimes tribunal on eight charges of murder, rape and persecution of Hindus, triggering deadly protests by thousands of supporters nationwide, leaving more than 100 people dead.

The party said tens of thousands of its supporters were arrested in a subsequent crackdown, and the party was only this year able to hold public protests again.

In 2014, Bangladesh’s Supreme Court said Sayedee should spend "the rest of his natural life" in jail for crimes during the 1971 liberation war with Pakistan.

Sayedee shot to prominence in the 1980s after he started preaching in some of the Muslim-majority nation's top mosques.

In his heyday he would draw hundreds of thousands to his sessions and CDs of his speeches were top sellers.

Even people who were not supporters of Jamaat attended his Koranic preachings.

Jamaat-e-Islami was banned for much of the 1970s for its support of Pakistan during the war, but by the 1990s it had become the country's third largest party and the biggest Islamist outfit.

Political analysts credit Sayedee's preaching for transforming the party into a major force.

Tens of thousands of supporters of Bangladesh’s main opposition party took to the streets in the country’s capital city of Dhaka, on Saturday (July 29) to demand Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. During the demonstration, Bangladesh police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the stone-throwing crowd that had blocked major roads across the city.

What are the protesters demanding?

The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies have staged multiple protests since last year and called for PM Hasina to step down. They have also demanded that the country hold general elections under a caretaker government.

This comes after the main opposition has been in disarray since its leader Khaleda Zia was jailed in 2018 on graft charges and has also garnered the support of thousands amid mounting anger over the cost of living in Bangladesh.

BNP’s demand to hold the next election, due in January 2024, by a neutral caretaker government has since been rejected by the incumbent government.

“BNP’s one-point demand is the restoration of democracy in Bangladesh....This can only be achieved through a free and fair election, which is not possible under the current regime,” senior BNP leader Abdul Moyeen Khan told Reuters.

He added, “This government must resign and make way for a free and fair election under an interim government, only through that we can restore a people's government in Bangladesh.”

About those injured and arrested

Clashes between the BNP and its supporters erupted after the police moved to clear thousands of people who had blocked traffic on key roads and highways around the city. Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesman Faruk Hossain told AFP, “Some officers were injured.”

He added, “We fired tear gas and rubber bullets.” The report citing the police official also said that at least four demonstration sites around the city saw clashes between police and protesters, where 20 officers were injured and 90 protesters were arrested.

Demonstrators at one of the protest sites in Dholaikhal retaliated by throwing rocks at riot police and their vehicles, reported AFP. A police inspector at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital told the news agency that six protesters had been admitted to the hospital with injuries.

Hossain told AFP that senior BNP leaders Goyeshwar Roy and Amanullah Aman had been taken into police custody, on Saturday, but have not formally been arrested.

“The government tried hard to prevent the rally, but it did not succeed. Our leaders and activists defied all obstacles and came to make the rally a success,” said BNP leader Mirza Abbas. He also said that the police arrested at least 100 of its supporters, reported Reuters.

However, the police said that they only arrested those who could not provide valid ID.

The incumbent PM’s Awami League has ruled Bangladesh since 2009 and has been accused of human rights abuses, corruption and creeping authoritarianism. Additionally, opposition and rights groups have criticised Hasina’s government for cracking down on anti-government protests.

Bangladesh: Police clash with protesters demanding PM Sheikh Hasina's resignation, several injured

The ongoing ethnic conflict is a mix of multiple complex factors that the issues have been causing huge rockers in the Indian Parliament.

Manipur violence: Manipur part of 'golden triangle' drug route

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced intense criticism and protests as he defended the parliament's vote for a crucial clause in the government's controversial judicial reform package.

Amidst ongoing demonstrations and international concern, Netanyahu justified the move as a "necessary democratic step," highlighting the need to empower the elected government and align policies with the majority of citizens, reported AFP.

"We passed the amendment on reasonability so that the elected government can carry out policy in line with the decision of the majority of the citizens of the country," he said in a televised address.

However, opponents argue that the judicial revamp could pave the way for an authoritarian government by weakening checks and balances on the Israeli executive.

Protests and political turmoil

Since its announcement in January, the proposed judicial reform package has sparked one of the largest protest movements in Israel's history.

Demonstrations gathered momentum throughout the day, with protesters voicing their opposition outside the parliament building in Jerusalem.

The Histadrut trade union confederation even threatened a nationwide strike in response to the parliamentary vote, demanding the government to resume negotiations with the opposition.

Critics fear erosion of democracy

Critics, including the US, expressed concern over the potential implications of the judicial reform package. They stressed the importance of enduring changes in a democracy having broad consensus.

The bill aims to limit the Supreme Court's powers to strike down government decisions deemed "unreasonable" by the judges. President Isaac Herzog attempted to mediate a compromise between the government and opposition, but the efforts ultimately failed, leading to an escalating political crisis.

Defending the reform package

Justice Minister Yariv Levin, the driving force behind the reform, assured that the "reasonableness" clause did not pose a threat and would help restore the balance between government branches.

He expressed the desire to reach an agreement on the broader reform package, emphasising it was in the national interest. However, opposition leader Yair Lapid criticised the government's move as a "defeat for Israeli democracy," raising concerns about potential changes to the character of the State of Israel.

The protests have united people from various backgrounds and sectors, including secular and religious groups, blue-collar and tech workers, peace activists, and military reservists. Demonstrators from across the political spectrum voiced their opposition to the reform, demanding a more inclusive approach to ensure the preservation of democratic values.

As Israel grapples with the contentious judicial reform, Prime Minister Netanyahu stands firm on its necessity, highlighting the government's commitment to serve the majority of the country's citizens. The situation remains tense as mass protests continue, putting pressure on the government to reconsider and seek broader consensus for enduring changes in the democratic system.
