Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp has urged the club’s supporters to celebrate at home as the club prepare to lift the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> trophy following their clash with Chelsea on Wednesday.

Klopp’s Liverpool secured their first top-flight title in 30 years with seven games to spare and will be presented with the trophy on a special podium built on the Kop stand at Anfield.

The Merseyside police has already warned fans not to repeat the widespread gatherings that took place on the city’s waterfront after the club’s title win last month, amid fears of a fresh spike in COVID-19 infections.

“We don’t want to say it is completely wrong but it is not right. We cannot excuse one wrong thing with another,” Klopp told a news conference on Tuesday.

“The first chance we get, will have this party, but only when it is appropriate.

“It’s a challenge, but we’ve faced bigger ones at this club. Stay at home with family.”

Wednesday’s opponents Chelsea have already spent big in the transfer market to recruit attackers Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, as Frank Lampard’s side look to mount a title challenge next season.

But Klopp said he will not use the club’s lack of activity in the transfer market as an excuse if they do not defend the title next season.

“I am happy with my squad 100%. I was here last year when people wanted us to sign him and him,” Klopp added.

“It’s not that we don’t want, we try to make the right decisions, and then COVID came. The situation changed and not for the better.

“We buy if we have the money for it and the need for it. If one of these things is not there, we will not buy and we will go again. And we will not use it as an excuse.”

Klopp urges Liverpool fans to stay home for Premier League trophy presentation

Dean Smith urged Aston Villa to finish the job after they climbed out of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> relegation zone as Trezeguet clinched a priceless 1-0 win against Arsenal on Tuesday.

Smith's side have their survival fate in their own hands after the Egypt winger's first-half strike at Villa Park.

Watford's 4-0 thrashing against Manchester City earlier on Tuesday had opened the door for Villa to escape the bottom three.

And Villa seized their chance with a first home Premier League win over Arsenal in 18 attempts dating back to 1998.

Villa are now fourth bottom and have moved ahead of third-bottom Watford on goal difference, with Smith's men on -26 compared to the Hornets' -27.

They head to&nbsp;West Ham for their final game of the season on Sunday, while Watford visit Arsenal and second-bottom Bournemouth, three points from safety, travel to Everton.

There are a multitude of permutations that could decide relegation, but Villa will be safe if they can better Watford's result on what is certain to be a dramatic finale.

If Villa and Watford both win, goal difference or goals scored will decide who goes down.

"It is a big boost, that's for sure. We knew we had to get that win to catch Watford and now we have got the season in our own hands," Smith said.

"That's all you can ask going into the last game. It was a great performance and an even better result against a good team who just beat two of the best teams in Europe.

"We have taken the season to the last day. Watford can go and win at Arsenal so we have to make sure we win at West Ham."

Having secured an FA Cup final place by beating Manchester City on Saturday, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta made six changes and Arsenal looked a shadow of the team who impressed at Wembley.

"Emotionally and physically it's been a very demanding week but I saw a team who wanted to fight until the end," Arteta insisted.

Arsenal cannot finish higher than eighth and must win the FA Cup final against Chelsea to qualify for next season's Europa League.&nbsp;

For all the positive signs since Arteta took charge in December, Arsenal will suffer their worst Premier League finish since 1995.

"It tells you the gap doesn't lie. We have to make that smaller and smaller," Arteta said.

"I know where we are in certain areas and where we need to improve. We will get that."

<h2>- Arteta plea -</h2>

&nbsp;

A plane trailing a banner reading "Back Arteta Kroenke Out" was flown over Villa Park during the match, but Arteta pleaded with Arsenal fans to trust he has the support of the US-based owner.

"The Kroenkes and the board and the sporting director, I have their full backing. I have that 100 percent. The fans have to believe what I'm saying," Arteta added.

Arsenal's long-standing weakness at set-pieces reared its head again as Villa snatched the lead in the 27th minute.

Tyrone Mings glanced Conor Hourihane's corner across the six-yard box and Trezeguet was left unmarked to blast a fierce strike past Arsenal keeper Emiliano Martinez.

Trezeguet has been Villa's savour as the stakes have got higher and his vital goal followed his brace in the victory against Crystal Palace nine days earlier.

Jack Grealish, strongly linked with a close-season move, was captaining Villa in what could have been his last home game with the club he supported as a boy.

Asked after the match about his future, Grealish said: "I'm not too sure at the moment. I have one aim and that's to keep Villa in the Premier League. That's all I'm thinking about."

Arsenal were better in the second half but Bukayo Saka blazed over from a good position 12 yards out.

With the tension mounting, Villa rode their luck when Eddie Nketiah's glancing header hit the post and bounced back into Pepe Reina's hands.

Villa out of relegation zone as Trezeguet sinks Arsenal

Wolves moved closer to a place in the Europa League with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, while Sheffield United's own European hopes were dashed by a 1-0 defeat against Everton on Monday.

At the other end of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> table, Brighton guaranteed their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> survival with a 0-0 draw against Newcastle.

Wolves, now unbeaten in three games, opened the scoring four minutes before half-time at Molineux.

Andros Townsend lost possession and Joao Moutinho found Matt Doherty, who crossed for Portuguese midfielder Daniel Podence to head his first goal for Wolves.

Jonny condemned Palace to a seventh successive defeat in the 68th minute, turning to fire home from close-range after Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez carved open the Palace defence.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side climbed to sixth place, one point above Tottenham, and will be certain to qualify for the Europa League if they win at Chelsea in their last game of the season on Sunday.

They would also qualify if Tottenham lose at Palace in their final match.

"The idea of improvement and the building process makes sense and today we achieved two more points than last season with one game to go," Nuno said.

"Sunday's game is very difficult but let's prepare well and compete."

At Bramall Lane, Sheffield United were handed a second successive defeat, ending their bid to cap a superb first season back in the top-flight by earning a European berth.

Carlo Ancelotti's team won it in the 46th minute when Brazil forward Richarlison met Gylfi Sigurdsson's free-kick with a glancing header for his 15th goal of the season.

Chris Wilder's eighth placed side are five points behind Wolves and four points adrift of Tottenham with one game left.

"I'm disappointed for the players today. But what you try and do in a season is get your club to overachieve and we have ridiculously overachieved," Wilder said.

"Top six should never have been in the equation from the minute we set foot into the division. There are a lot of clubs that would swap places with us."

The teams who finish fifth and sixth are certain to reach next season's Europa League.

If the FA Cup winners finish in the top six, then seventh place would also qualify for the Europa League.

Arsenal, who face third-placed Chelsea in the FA Cup final, are currently 10th, meaning Tottenham are in danger of a first season without Europe competition since 2009-10.

<h2>- Brighton avoid the drop -</h2>

At the Amex Stadium, Brighton got the point they needed to be mathematically certain of avoiding relegation.

Graham Potter's side were already virtually certain to stay up before the match because their goal difference is far superior to third-from-bottom Aston Villa -- the only team in the relegation zone who could have caught them.

Brighton have won just two of their last 17 league games, but ending a run of three successive home defeats moved them seven points clear of the bottom three, with Villa having just two games left.

"At this stage of the season we can talk about performances but it's about getting the points you need," Potter said.

"It's been a unique season in what we've had to deal with. It's been a challenge.&nbsp;

"We've come through. Job done. I'm very proud to be in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> next season."

Neal Maupay stole possession but let Newcastle off the hook with a wayward finish before Leandro Trossard brought a good save from Martin Dubravka.

Wolves bolster Europa League bid, Blades blunted by Everton

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been on the firing line following a series of costly goalkeeping blunders for the Red Devils. However, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Tuesday said the Spaniard is mentally strong enough to deal with the fierce criticism.

The 29-year-old, who was regarded as one of the best a couple of seasons ago, is fighting for his place as United’s number one after he was again at fault for two goals in United’s 3-1 FA Cup semi-final defeat against Chelsea on Sunday.

De Gea has been central to widespread criticism for over 18 months now for some of the glaring errors in front of the goal.

Solskjaer, speaking at his pre-match press conference, was determined to keep the focus on Wednesday's game against West Ham rather than the struggles of his goalkeeper.

"This is not going to become a David de Gea press conference," he said. "We're just going to stick together. We've got two games, so we're just going to focus on that one.

"David's mentally strong enough to know that his job is to perform in training the next day and then be ready for the games."

Premier League: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defends 'mentally strong' De Gea after errors

David Moyes urged West Ham to finish the job after they effectively sealed their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> survival with a first half goal-blitz in Friday's 3-1 win over relegation rivals Watford.

Moyes' side ran riot before the break at the London Stadium thanks to goals from Michail Antonio, Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice.

Troy Deeney got one back for Watford after the interval, but the visitors couldn't muster an unlikely escape act.

West Ham climbed to 15th place and sit six points clear of the relegation zone with just two games left.

Holding a vastly superior goal difference to third bottom Bournemouth and second bottom Aston Villa, the Hammers should be safe from the drop.

After their second successive win, West Ham need one more point to guarantee their survival.

If other results make them do it themselves, Moyes is confident his players will be up to the task against Manchester United and Aston Villa.

"We are in a good position. Teams still have that chance and we have to do the job," Moyes said.&nbsp;

"Even scoring the goals has helped, I wanted us to keep our goal difference as good as it could be.&nbsp;

"We have 37 points with a couple of games to go. If we get 40 points we'll have done it off our own back."

Fourth bottom Watford are just three points above the relegation zone and face a nerve-wracking finish to the season.

Nigel Pearson's men, beaten for the first time in three matches, will face Manchester City and Arsenal in their final two games.

Bournemouth, whose goal difference is only two worse than Watford's, would go above the Hornets if they beat Southampton by a three-goal margin on Sunday.

"There's no getting away from the fact this result is bitterly disappointing. I'd expect better from our players," Pearson said.

"I'll look at it again and players will get honest feedback. They will go home tonight and think 'wow we've let that one drift past us'.&nbsp;

"It wasn't good enough. We know that we have the toughest run-in but we have to cope with it."

&nbsp;

<h2>- In-form Antonio -</h2>

&nbsp;

Antonio had scored four times in West Ham's rout of Norwich last weekend and the forward was too hot for Watford to handle as well.

West Ham took the lead in the sixth minute when Pablo Fornals played in Antonio and he fired past Ben Foster for his seventh goal since the coronavirus hiatus.

Less than five minutes later, Watford's task was made harder when Soucek headed home from Jarrod Bowen's cross.

England midfielder Rice produced a superb 30-yard strike to put West Ham three up in the 36th minute.

Watford striker Deeney reduced the deficit in the 49th minute, tapping in after Abdoulaye Doucoure's shot rebounded off a post.

But Deeney was forced off with an injury and Watford couldn't fight back without their captain.

Hammers substitute Sebastian Haller went close in the closing stages with an acrobatic 25-yard volley that Foster tipped away.

Watford's last chance was squandered by Danny Welbeck, who fired hurriedly over after being taken by surprise when team-mate Andre Gray missed his header.

West Ham close to survival after vital win over Watford

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told Manchester United to enjoy the pressure of fighting for a place in the top four after needing a 19-game unbeaten run just to give themselves a chance of a return to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/uefa-champions-league">Champions League</a> next season.

United rarely hit the heights of recent weeks in beating Crystal Palace 2-0 on Thursday as goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, allied to a helping hand from VAR, kept a top-four finish in their own hands.

Solskjaer's men remain in fifth, but moved back level on points with Leicester, who they face on the final day of the season, and to within one point of third-placed Chelsea.

"We need to smile, we have earned this right. No-one thought in January that we would be in with a shout for top four," said Solskjaer.

"These are the games that matter. That is the thing at Manchester United, you have to step up and show your personality."

Solskjaer bemoaned having 48 hours' less preparation time than Chelsea for Sunday's FA Cup semi-final, but that made little difference to the Norwegian's team selection with only two changes from the side that started Monday's 2-2 draw with Southampton.

Fatigue seemed to play a factor in a slow start from the visitors and Solskjaer warned his side they cannot afford a repeat in a big 10 days ahead.

"Of course it's tight scheduling but we can't afford starts like that," he added. "We didn't get the rhythm in our passing but two fantastic goals won it for us."

<h2>- VAR controversy -</h2>

Palace have now lost six games on the spin, but Roy Hodgson believed his side did not get what they deserved, particularly with two controversial VAR reviews.

The game turned in the minutes before the break when Wilfried Zaha went down in the penalty area claiming to have been tripped by Victor Lindelof.

Neither referee Graham Scott nor a review awarded a penalty and moments later United led.

Bruno Fernandes fed Rashford inside the area who sold Patrick van Aanholt a dummy and cut onto his right foot before finding the bottom corner for his 22nd goal of the season.

"Is the VAR broken?" tweeted Palace chairman Steve Parish.

Unfortunately for Parish and Palace, VAR was fully in operation 10 minutes into the second half when Jordan Ayew converted Zaha's low cross but was denied an equaliser by a millimetric offside decision on review.

"If there was ever a game I should be sat here congratulating the team on the performance and result tonight is the night," said Hodgson.

"Having to come to terms with something you don't deserve is very difficult."

At the other end Rashford did not get enough power on his shot to beat Vicente Guaita and Fernandes smashed against the post.

Rashford is to become the youngest person to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Manchester for his work campaigning against child poverty and he rounded off another fine week for the 22-year-old on and off the field with a major role in Martial's second to clinch a vital three points.

The England international burst through three Palace players before feeding Fernandes. The Portuguese's pass through the legs of Luka Milivojevic found Rashford again on the edge of the area and he cushioned a pass into Martial to slide home.

Palace's misfortune was rounded off as Van Aanholt had to be stretchered off after dislocating his shoulder in a collision with Martial, which Hodgson confirmed could see the Dutch international miss the start of next season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told Manchester United to enjoy the pressure of fighting for a place in the top four after needing a 19-game unbeaten run just to give themselves a chance of a return to the Champions League next season. That is the thing at Manchester United, you have to step up and show your personality." Solskjaer bemoaned having 48 hours' less preparation time than Chelsea for Sunday's FA Cup semi-final, but that made little difference to the Norwegian's team selection with only two changes from the side that started Monday's 2-2 draw with Southampton. Fatigue seemed to play a factor in a slow start from the visitors and Solskjaer warned his side they cannot afford a repeat in a big 10 days ahead. "Of course it's tight scheduling but we can't afford starts like that," he added. "We didn't get the rhythm in our passing but two fantastic goals won it for us." - VAR controversy - Palace have now lost six games on the spin, but Roy Hodgson believed his side did not get what they deserved, particularly with two controversial VAR reviews. "Having to come to terms with something you don't deserve is very difficult." At the other end Rashford did not get enough power on his shot to beat Vicente Guaita and Fernandes smashed against the post. Rashford is to become the youngest person to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Manchester for his work campaigning against child poverty and he rounded off another fine week for the 22-year-old on and off the field with a major role in Martial's second to clinch a vital three points. Rashford, Martial and VAR keep Man Utd on course for top-four finish

Arsenal capitalised on shocking errors from Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Alisson to beat the champions 2-1 at The Emirates on Wednesday and end their hopes of a record points tally for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> season.

The loss means Liverpool, on 93 points, can now only stretch that tally to 99, one short of Manchester City’s record. Arsenal’s first win against Liverpool since April 2015 lifts them one place to ninth in the table on 53 points.

The visitors created all the early pressure and opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Sadio Mane lashed in his 17th goal of the season from close range.

Yet the home side, playing without their leading scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, were handed a free pass back into the game 12 minutes later when Van Dijk made a back pass straight into the path of Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette.

The Frenchman calmly rounded defender Fabinho and keeper Alisson and fired into an empty net.

A second moment of calamitous work at the back from Liverpool then gifted the lead to Arsenal before the break, when Alisson attempted a chipped ball out to Robertson that Lacazette ran onto and pulled back to Reiss Nelson.

The 20-year-old turned and shaped his shot beyond the diving keeper into the bottom left corner.

“Twice, a massive lack of concentration... These two moments killed the game for us,” said Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, whose side suffered only their third league defeat of the season.

“Arsenal had no real chances... You cannot win football games when you concede goals like this.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had left Aubameyang on the bench, most likely with one eye on Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City, which may now be the Gunners’ best chance of securing European football next season.

Yet as Liverpool poured forward after the break and created numerous chances, the best of which from Salah was palmed over the bar at the last second by keeper Emiliano Martinez, Arteta responded.

He shored up his side with a triple substitution, bringing off both his goalscorers and Lucas Torreira and replacing them with Aubameyang, Dani Ceballos and Joe Willock.

Klopp then took off Firmino and brought on Takumi Minamino, who had an almost immediate shout for a penalty after coming into contact with Kieran Tierney in front of the Arsenal goal.

The visitors kept up the pressure but despite at times driving almost the entire Arsenal team back into their own penalty area, they were unable to find a way through.

“In terms of energy and happiness in the dressing room before the (FA Cup) semi-final, it’s a good medicine,” Arteta said.

“To beat this team you have to have moments in the game when you take your chances, defend and have a bit of luck.”

English Premier League sets date for summer transfer window; yet to be approved by FIFA

Manchester United’s Champions League qualification hopes suffered a blow after an equaliser deep in stoppage time from Michael Obafemi earned Southampton a 2-2 draw in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> at Old Trafford on Monday.

United, unbeaten in 18 games in all competitions, were poised to move up to third after Anthony Martial’s 23rd minute strike had put them 2-1 ahead. They had fallen behind to an early Stuart Armstrong goal before Marcus Rashford equalised.

But on the day that second-placed Manchester City’s two-year ban from European football was overturned on appeal, meaning only the top four will qualify for the Champions League as usual, United’s late lapse left them fifth on 59 points.

Leicester City are fourth, ahead of United on goal difference, with Chelsea third on 60 points. City and title winners Liverpool have already secured Champions League places for next season.

Southampton took a shock lead in the 12th minute when Paul Pogba was robbed by Danny Ings just outside the area and Nathan Redmond’s cross found Armstrong at the back post where the Scottish midfielder slotted home.

Rashford then had the ball in the net, converting a low cross from Luke Shaw, but it was ruled out for offside although the United striker did not have to wait long to level.

Pogba played the ball in to Martial who held off two Saints defenders before poking the ball to Rashford and the striker made no mistake with a left-foot finish in the 20th minute.

Three minutes later United had the lead, Bruno Fernandes fed Martial on the left and the French international cut inside and smashed the ball home.

However, the home side never got a real grip on the game in midfield against a Southampton side that moved the ball well and constantly pressed.

United had to finish the game with 10 men after Brandon Williams went off injured, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having no substitute opportunities, and they failed to hold on to the three points when Obafemi turned in a poorly defended corner at the back post.

James Ward-Prowse’s in-swinger was flicked on by Jan Bednarek and Obafemi got in front of Victor Lindelof to find the decisive touch.

“The second half was a bit of a slog, we were not good enough on the ball. We brought pressure on to ourselves but we felt we did enough to win the game,” said United captain Harry Maguire.

“We have improved on defending set plays. We had a terrible record at the start of the season but have been really good on them. Can’t get let him get a header in when we have four men around the goal so have to look at it.

“We are disappointed a the moment but we dust ourselves down tomorrow,” he added.

'It's a disgraceful decision' - Jose Mourinho gives his take on CAS verdict on Man City's European ban

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has said that his side would win next season's Europa League if they get qualified.&nbsp;

Spurs took a big step towards qualifying into Europa League after defeating Arsenal 2-1 in the derby clash on Sunday.&nbsp;

Mourinho has won the second-tier European competition two times, once with Manchester United and other with Porto and is eyeing a third with his current team.&nbsp;

"I would love to play Europa League," said the Spurs boss, whose side currently is placed eighth in the Premier League table.&nbsp;

A seventh place on the table could be enough for the London-based team to qualify, depending on results in the FA Cup.

"It is not a competition I am in love with, it is not a competition that I like very, very much to play, but when you cannot play the Champions League, you play the Europa League," added Mourinho.

"In my career I have only played the Europa League twice and I have won it twice. It would not be bad to play a third time and win it a third time. We have to fight until the end to finish in a Europa League place.

"If you ask (six-time Formula One world champion) Lewis Hamilton if he wants to win Formula Two, I don't think it will be a great deal for him, but it is a competition and I prefer to play Europa League than to not play."

Manchester United were given a controversial helping hand by VAR in their 3-0 win at Aston Villa, while Tottenham suffered fresh frustration at the hands of the review system in their 0-0 draw at Bournemouth on Thursday.

United were far too strong for lowly Villa, but their opening goal came from a dubious penalty that left the hosts fuming.

In the 27th minute, United midfielder Bruno Fernandes spun into Ezri Konsa before tumbling in the area despite little evidence of a foul by the Villa defender.

The penalty stood after a VAR review and Fernandes slotted home his eighth goal since joining from Sporting Lisbon in January.

"It all changed on the penalty decision. Fernandes' first touch is on the ball, his second touch is on Konsa's shin," Villa manager Dean Smith said.

"I can understand (referee) Jon (Moss) getting it wrong but if that goes to VAR I don't know what they are looking at. It's a disgraceful decision."

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer disagreed: "I think it's a penalty. The boy sticks out his leg, Fernandes does a fantastic 'Zidane turn' and he lands on him."

United doubled their lead in first half stoppage-time when 18-year-old Mason Greenwood scored his fourth goal in three games with a fierce finish.

Paul Pogba got the third in the 58th minute, the France midfielder bagging his first goal of an injury-hit season with a low curler from 18 yards.

Fifth placed United move to within one point of fourth placed Leicester in the race to qualify for the Champions League.

United, unbeaten in their last 17 games in all competitions, are the first team in Premier League history to win four consecutive matches by a margin of three or more goals.

Second bottom Villa are four points from safety and haven't won in six games since the restart.

There was more VAR controversy at Dean Court, with Tottenham left in danger of missing out on European competition for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

Jose Mourinho's side were off-key for long periods, but could feel hard done by after Josh King's push on Harry Kane in the penalty area went unpushed despite a VAR review in the first half.

Just a week after Tottenham were the victims of a harsh VAR decision in their loss at Sheffield United, Mourinho felt they were the victims of another bad mistake by the replay official.

"The same referee who did the VAR decision against Sheffield United, Michael Oliver. Opinions matter, It's not only mine. Everybody knows that's a penalty and when I say everybody, I mean everybody," Mourinho said.

"Normally at minute five we would be winning 1-0 against a team in trouble, I think the game would be completely different.

"The game had the most important moment. You know when, you know who. Like Sheffield, the man of the match was not one of the players."

Just a year after reaching the Champions League final, Tottenham sit in ninth place in the Premier League, 10 points off the top four and far from certain to make next season's Europa League.

Third bottom Bournemouth thought they had won it in stoppage-time, but Callum Wilson's overhead kick clearly hit King's hand on its way past Hugo Lloris and their celebrations were curtailed by VAR.

Eddie Howe's men, without a win in nine matches, are three points from safety with just four games left to avoid relegation.

At Goodison Park, Southampton held Everton to a 1-1 draw as Danny Ings boosted his bid for the Premier League's Golden Boot.

Southampton's James Ward-Prowse won a penalty in the 28th minute when he was tripped by Andre Gomes, but the midfielder blazed his spot-kick against the crossbar.

Three minutes after that blunder, Ings put Southampton ahead, rounding Jordan Pickford to claim his 19th league goal of the season, three behind the top-flight's current leading scorer Jamie Vardy.

Richarlison equalised in the 43rd minute with a clinical finish from Lucas Digne's superb long pass for his 14th goal of the season.

VAR in the dock as Man Utd down Villa, Spurs frustrated

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been ruled out of the rest of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> champions’ campaign after the midfielder sustained a knee injury in their midweek win at Brighton &amp; Hove Albion, manager Juergen Klopp said on Friday.

Klopp was forced to withdraw Henderson 10 minutes from fulltime in the 3-1 win after a collision with Yves Bissouma but the German said the 30-year-old does not require surgery.

“It is the best possible of the bad news. He does not need surgery,” Klopp told reporters in a virtual news conference. “He will not play again this season. I’m pretty positive he will be with us for the new season, he is a quick healer.

“We all felt for him, awful moment. We knew immediately. Hendo is an animal he fights for everything. He deals well with pain but in this moment, he knew something had happened. It was a complete mood killer.

“The boys were happy with the result but then the boys realised Hendo was hurt. No surgery needed is the good news. He will lift the trophy, he deserves to lift the trophy.”

Liverpool, who are on 92 points with four games remaining, are on course to break Manchester City’s record haul of 100 points and face Burnley on Saturday.

Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah is in the running for the Golden Boot for the league’s top scorer again after winning the award last season, but the Egyptian is three goals behind Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy who has 22.

Klopp hailed Salah’s heroics after he was involved in all three goals at Brighton but dismissed talk of Liverpool’s players deliberately passing the ball for him to score and catch up with Vardy.

“I saw the replays back and Bobby (Roberto Firmino) was not in the best position for the shot and Mo was in a better place,” Klopp said. “I don’t think he did it for the Golden Boot. You cannot have that mindset, we all help.

The Premier League confirmed to the BBC's Match of the Day programme that United and Southampton should not have been given penalties, but Tottenham should have been awarded one.

Former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill, a Match of the Day pundit, said a former player should work alongside VAR officials.

"I think that would really help them, to understand the movements," the former Australia international said.

"When a player falls to buy a penalty you can feel it. It must need a player there to give advice on what the player is doing.

"They're there to make the big decisions and they can't do it. It's really disappointing."

Mourinho refused to speak about Michael Oliver's appointment as referee for Sunday's match against Arsenal at his pre-match press conference.

Oliver has been the VAR official for Spurs' past two away games. There were controversial decisions in both -- a Harry Kane goal was chalked off for a Lucas Moura handball at Sheffield United and no penalty was award at Bournemouth.

Mourinho believes referees and VAR officials should be made accessible after games to explain their decisions.

"I think you should have access to them, I think you should have access to them to ask directly why," he said.

"It is very important. They are very important in the game, I think so.

"It would stop nothing, make things much more open, much more clear. It would give the ref the chance to say, 'Yes, I made a mistake -- I feel sorry for that', or 'Yes I had incredible performance'."

Premier League admits VAR blunders

Mohamed Salah kept Liverpool on track to set a new <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> points record as the champions won 3-1 at Brighton, while Manchester City bounced back to form with a five-goal rout of Newcastle on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp's side are hoping to break the 100-point record established by Manchester City in 2018 and they remain on course after securing their first away win since February.

Liverpool have 92 points and need nine more from their remaining four games against Burnley, Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle to clinch the new record.

Asked about the record chase, Klopp said: "It's not important for me. I'm not interested in any of this but I want to win football games.

"For sports people in general it might be important. We are champions and it could be softening but it is not. The boys go with everything."

Liverpool have reached 30 wins in a season faster than any other in English league history and Klopp added: "We now have 92 points and last season we had 97!&nbsp;

"That's unbelievable, I have no idea how we did that."

Salah punished poor defending in the sixth minute, grabbing his 22nd goal of the season and Liverpool's first away from home since February.

Jordan Henderson increased Liverpool's advantage with a curling finish from the edge of the area three minutes later.

Leandro Trossard got one back with a powerful strike in first-half stoppage-time.

But Salah's 76th-minute header from Andrew Robertson's corner ensured Liverpool's five-match winless run on their travels came to an end.

But Pep Guardiola's men have now won all four games at the Etihad since the restart by a combined score of 17-0 after thumping Newcastle 5-0.

Gabriel Jesus was one of the main culprits when it came to missed chances at St Mary's, but the Brazilian needed just 10 minutes to score against Newcastle as he steered David Silva's cross into the far corner.

Kevin De Bruyne then picked out Riyad Mahrez for a simple finish.

There was more than a hint of fortune to City's third as Matt Ritchie's attempted clearance ricocheted off Federico Fernandez into his own net.

Silva's appearances at the Etihad are running out, with the Spaniard ending his 10-year stay in Manchester when City's season finishes in August.

He left another reminder of why he will be so missed with a sumptuous free-kick to make it four.

And Silva turned provider again in stoppage time for Raheem Sterling to round off the scoring.

City will find out next week if the club's appeal against a two-season ban from European competition to the Court of Arbitration for Sport has been successful.

Premier League: Liverpool boost record bid, Man City crush Newcastle

Chelsea kept up their push for a top-four finish in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> and Champions League football next season with a 3-2 victory at London rivals Crystal Palace on Tuesday thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud, Christian Pulisic and Tammy Abraham.

The visitors took a two-goal lead inside half an hour through Giroud and Pulisic but Palace responded with a Wilfried Zaha goal before the break. Abraham made it 3-1 after 71 minutes only for Christian Benteke to strike back a minute later.

Palace then piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser and in added time defender Scott Dann hit the post while only a last-ditch tackle by Kurt Zouma denied Benteke.

The win took Chelsea up to third, leapfrogging Leicester City who were at Arsenal later on Tuesday, to stand five points clear of fifth-placed Manchester United, who visit Aston Villa on Thursday. Palace stay 15 points clear of the relegation zone.

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side went ahead in the seventh minute when former Blues defender Gary Cahill pulled up with an injury, giving Willian all the time he needed to cut the ball back for an easy finish by French striker Giroud.

The visitors doubled their lead 20 minutes later as Willian fed Pulisic on the edge of the box and the American shrugged off his marker Joel Ward to fire a fierce angled shot past goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

Chelsea looked in complete control and only a fine save by Guaita prevented Willian from adding a third goal after Pulisic burst through the Palace lines.

Thrashed 5-2 at Manchester United on Saturday, Eddie Howe's side are in free-fall after an eight-game winless run featuring five successive defeats.

The second bottom Cherries, one point from safety, face Tottenham, Leicester and Manchester City in their next three games.

That sequence that will surely determine whether Bournemouth can extend their five-season stay in the top-flight for another year.

Bournemouth's lack of goals has been a huge part of their downfall, with the starting line-up at Old Trafford managing just eight between them so far this season.

"Games are running out. If we're going to stay in the division, we're going to have to start picking up points," Bournemouth winger Junior Stanislas said.

"We'll have no excuses. We can't keep talking. It's time for action.

"There's no reason why from now until the end of the season we can't pick points up."

<h2>Aston Villa</h2>

A wretched run of nine matches without a win has left third bottom Villa one point from safety.

Dubious pre-season investment in several underwhelming signings have left Villa relying on captain Jack Grealish to inspire their survival bid.

But Dean Smith's side have lost three of their five games since the restart and still have to face Manchester United and Arsenal before a potential final-day shootout with West Ham.

They could count themselves unfortunate not to have secured what would have been a point at Anfield in Sunday's 2-0 defeat against champions Liverpool.

That obdurate display offered hope that Villa could still avoid an immediate return to the Championship, but Smith knows they will have to be more ruthless to achieve that aim.

"I don't want to be a valiant loser, we're scrapping for points," Smith said.

"To out-shoot Liverpool at home at Anfield, in terms of efforts on goal, it's excellent, but we need to take our opportunities. We never found the quality in the final third they did."

<h2>Watford</h2>

Saturday's 3-0 drubbing at Chelsea condemned Watford to a third consecutive loss, leaving them perilously positioned one point above the bottom three.

Nigel Pearson's fourth bottom team have not won just their stunning 3-0 success against Liverpool on February 29.

After five years in the top-flight, the Hornets, who face Manchester City and Arsenal in their last two games, could find their fate settled by Tuesday's home clash with Norwich and a visit to West Ham on July 17.

"The important thing is we understand our situation, that we don't fear it," said Pearson, whose men have managed just two goals in their last five games.

"We need to show fighting spirit, and we also need to have the ability to still make good decisions."

<h2>West Ham</h2>

Sitting four clear of the relegation zone in 16th place, West Ham are in the best position to stay up thanks to their surprise 3-2 win over Chelsea last week.

Twice blowing the lead in Sunday's 2-2 draw at Newcastle was a setback in their survival bid, but David Moyes' side have control of their own destiny.

West Ham have now lost 24 points from winning positions in the Premier League this season, more than any other side.

But with games against Norwich, Watford and Aston Villa to come, their forward Michail Antonio is confident of beating the drop.

"The mindset for our next few games is that we want three points from each of them, and that's what we believe we can get," said Antonio, whose club have not been in the Championship since 2012.

"Now we've managed to show our attacking form and we are scoring goals, we need to shore up our back as well."

Tension is mounting at the bottom of the Premier League as the fight to avoid relegation heads towards a dramatic conclusion. With just five games left, rock bottom Norwich are seven points from safety and are sliding towards the Championship.

Tension mounts in Premier League relegation battle

The match between Tottenham Hotspur and Everton in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> saw a moment where Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and Son Heung-min confronted the latter while shouting and shoving his shoulder before being separated by teammates in what was a furious row on Monday.

The usually calm Son responded angrily and charged towards Lloris before being kept apart by teammates Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko as the altercation threatened to boil over. The French goalkeeper was furious after Son failed to close down a loose ball in the midfield before Everton attacked the goal through Richarlison.&nbsp;

Premier League: Hugo Lloris and Son Heung-min involve in furious row - Watch

Chelsea held on to their place in the Premier League's top four by bouncing back to beat Watford 3-0 on Saturday after Manchester United briefly powered past with a 5-2 rout of struggling Bournemouth.

Third-placed Leicester also got back on track with Jamie Vardy reaching 100 top-flight goals in a comfortable 3-0 win against Crystal Palace, while Arsenal dealt a blow to Wolves' Champions League chase by winning 2-0 at Molineux on Saturday.

United's fearsome front four of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood, who netted twice, were all on the scoresheet as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men hit five goals in a home Premier League game for the first time since 2011.

"Confidence is sky high. You get energy and confidence by performances and results and we are getting that at the minute," said Solskjaer, who is feeling the benefits of a 16-match unbeaten run.

"I have enjoyed the last few games to be honest and it is healthy. You don't age as quickly!"

Bournemouth are moving fast in the other direction as they remain second bottom and the Cherries' defensive problems were quickly exposed after they took a shock 16th-minute lead through Junior Stanislas.

Greenwood got the comeback started as he smashed home from Fernandes's pass before Rashford, from the penalty spot and Martial, with a stunning shot into the top corner, scored their 20th goals of the season,

"Mason is one of the best if not the best finisher I have worked with and seen," added Solskjaer. "He is so calm. He knows where to finish if it is on the training ground, here or in his garden at home."

Bournemouth were given hope when Josh King scored from the spot after Eric Bailly handled inside his own box just four minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute.

But there was no stopping Solskjaer's men going forward and Greenwood restored their two-goal cushion with another powerful drive, this time on his weaker right foot, before Fernandes then capped another influential display with a fine free-kick.

Chelsea shrugged off a shock 3-2 defeat at West Ham in midweek with a routine win at Stamford Bridge.

Olivier Giroud was recalled up front and repaid Frank Lampard with a smart finish to break the deadlock before Willian's penalty made it 2-0 before half-time.

Ross Barkley added the third in stoppage time to move Chelsea back two points ahead of fifth-placed United.

"We needed a result after the last game," said Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic. "I think there was an extra bit of energy because of that loss, we wanted to prove a point."

A third defeat in four games since the restart leaves Watford still just one point above Bournemouth and Aston Villa in the battle to beat the drop.

Arsenal kept their hopes of European football next season alive moved by ending Wolves' eight-game unbeaten run in impressive fashion to move up to seventh.

Bukayo Saka celebrated signing a new long-term deal this week by hooking in the opener just before half-time and Alexandre Lacazette came off the bench to seal all three points for Mikel Arteta's men four minutes from time.

"Every game you have no margin for error, we know that we try to win every game," said Arteta of Arsenal's top-four chances.

Defeat leaves Wolves five points behind Chelsea.

Arsenal face Leicester next on Tuesday, but the Foxes go into that game with a much-needed confidence boost after a first win in five games.

Leicester have struggled to score goals of late, but were helped back to winning ways by some calamitous Palace defending for Kelechi Iheanacho to open the scoring and Vardy to tap into an empty net for his Premier League century.

Vardy struck again in characteristic fashion in stoppage time, sprinting in behind before dinking the ball over the advancing Vicente Guaita.

"To get the two goals and the three points is all you can ask for," said Vardy. "We know it's down to us. We are in this position on merit and we have to keep going. If we play like that between now and the end of the season, we will pick up a quite a few points."

Norwich manager Daniel Farke conceded his side are heading for relegation after a 1-0 home defeat to Brighton left the Canaries still seven points.

"It was more or less our last chance to get back in the mix," said Farke.

"After a few losses, we don't have the right to make any fighting messages or to make any unrealistic claims."

Chelsea win holds off rampant Manchester United in race for Premier League top four

Jurgen Klopp was adamant results remain important to him in Liverpool's closing games after the newly crowned Premier League champions were humbled 4-0 by Manchester City.

The Reds came down to earth with a bump at the Etihad on Thursday in their first match since securing the title last week.

Klopp's side still have a 20-point lead over Pep Guardiola's second-placed team but with six games remaining but the German boss still wants to finish strongly.

"If someone said the result didn't matter for my team, I cannot help them," Klopp said.

"Yes, results matter a lot. I am not only looking for results but we want to win football games -- that is the reason we work on the training ground, go to away games and play home games."

One motivating factor could be the challenge of beating City's record of 100 points from two seasons ago.

Liverpool, who have dropped points in just four games this season, currently have 86 ahead of Sunday's home clash with Aston Villa.

"To get there we have to win football games and we didn't do that here," he said.

"So now we make sure we are ready for Aston Villa and the points tally at the end of the season is the result of the results we collect until then."

Liverpool started brightly against City, with Mohamed Salah testing Ederson and then hitting the post, but the hosts took charge after Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring from the penalty spot on 25 minutes.&nbsp;

Further goals came from Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain put a Sterling shot into his own net.

Despite the big points gap, City remain a potent force and could end the season with Champions League glory.

"It's a reminder how good Man City are," Klopp said. "I didn't need that, I knew it before. The surprise that it's still possible, nice, that in a league where City are playing, someone else can be champions. That's not very likely with the quality they have.

"We will see next season but it's a while until then. Next season we will think about next season."

Premier League: Jurgen Klopp targets strong finish after Man City thumping

Premier League champions Liverpool are the only club certain of their place in next season's Champions League as the teams below them jostle for position and Manchester City await a court ruling.

Pep Guardiola's City, who humbled Liverpool 4-0 on Thursday, should still comfortably finish in the top four, with a 14-point lead over fifth place and just six games to play.&nbsp;

But the outcome of their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, set to be announced in mid-July, will decide whether a two-season ban from European competitions is upheld.

Should City's appeal fail, fifth place would be good enough for the riches of Champions League football next season, and results since the Premier League's restart have tightened the race for a top-five finish.

AFP Sport looks at the contrasting fortunes of four of the contenders.

<h2>Leicester - 55 points</h2>

Leicester have spent most of the campaign in third and were even Liverpool's closest challengers for two months earlier in the season as they strung together an eight-game winning run between October and December.

However, that good work has come undone during a run of two wins in 11 league games, including just two points from a possible nine since the restart against Watford, Brighton and Everton.

Goals have dried up for Brendan Rodgers's men, with Jamie Vardy finding the net just twice in 2020.

Leicester face a tough end to the campaign, with Arsenal, Tottenham and a final-day clash with Manchester United to come.

They also have uncertainty hanging over their heads, with a local lockdown in place in Leicester due to a coronavirus spike.

Saturday's visit of Crystal Palace is still due to go ahead as scheduled but shifting matches away from the King Power Stadium would be a headache.

<h2>Chelsea - 54 points</h2>

Frank Lampard's men were brought back down to earth with a bang in a 3-2 defeat at West Ham on Wednesday after fine form following the restart had them eyeing third rather than looking over their shoulders.

Failure to qualify for the Champions League would be a huge blow to the Blues' ambitious plans for next season after the signings of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, who will add an extra dimension to the Chelsea attack.

However, conceding three times to goal-shy West Ham exposed the defensive problems that Lampard has to solve before turning to the transfer market.

Upcoming games against Watford, Palace, Sheffield United and Norwich give Chelsea the chance to get back on track and they will be hoping to have a top-four finish wrapped up before a trip to Liverpool and a home game against Wolves in the final week of the season.

<h2>Manchester United - 52 points</h2>

United are a team reborn since the January signing of Bruno Fernandes transformed a laboured midfield.

The Portuguese international has since been joined in the middle of the park by a fit-again Paul Pogba to add an extra dose of creativity as the Red Devils have taken seven points from a possible nine since the Premier League's return.

At the back, United have kept 11 clean sheets during a 15-match unbeaten run in all competitions and there is cause for optimism up front too, with 18-year-old Mason Greenwood forming a thrilling front three alongside Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

United also have the softest run-in to go with their momentum, with Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Ham to come before they face Leicester.&nbsp;

<h2>Wolves - 52 points</h2>

Nuno Espirito Santo's men could be the biggest winners after a three-month break in the season.

Wolves had played 48 games in the first eight months of the campaign due to their early start in the Europa League qualifiers but have come back refreshed.

Victories over West Ham, Bournemouth and Villa have been achieved with the minimum of fuss and without conceding a single goal.

Tougher tests lie ahead but there are few sides better prepared for a high volume of games in a short period without making many changes.

Premier League champions Liverpool are the only club certain of their place in next season's Champions League as the teams below them jostle for position and Manchester City await a court ruling.

Chelsea - 54 points Frank Lampard's men were brought back down to earth with a bang in a 3-2 defeat at West Ham on Wednesday after fine form following the restart had them eyeing third rather than looking over their shoulders. Manchester United - 52 points United are a team reborn since the January signing of Bruno Fernandes transformed a laboured midfield. United also have the softest run-in to go with their momentum, with Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Ham to come before they face Leicester. Wolves - 52 points Nuno Espirito Santo's men could be the biggest winners after a three-month break in the season.

Premier League battle for Champions League places heats up

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah says he wants to remain at the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> champions for a long time and says the team have developed a perfect understanding.

The Egypt international, who signed a new five-year deal in 2018, was the top scorer at the club this season with 17 Premier League goals as they secured a 19th top-flight title with seven games to spare.

“I’m very happy... I can’t describe my feelings after we won the league after 30 years. I can see people’s joy and this is so important for all of us,” Salah told BeIN Sport.

“I enjoy the atmosphere here ... I love this place and I hope to stay for a long time. The atmosphere here is different to any other place.

“We have adapted well as a team and our understanding is perfect. If this continues, we can achieve more. It’s difficult to maintain our current level, but it’s not impossible.”

Salah hailed the impact of club captain Jordan Henderson and said he would pick the midfielder as the best player in the league this season.

“Maybe I’ll choose Henderson because he’s the captain and he’s been here for about eight-nine years. He had a difficult time in the beginning and he was heavily criticized,” he said.

“... He, as a captain, is loved by all of us and he tries to help all players and helps youth players to adapt.”

Burnley captain Ben Mee marked his 300th appearance for the club by scoring in a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on Monday as the Clarets climbed to eighth in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> table.

Victory saw Sean Dyche's visitors go level on points with Tottenham Hotspur and keep alive their hopes of European football next season.

A week on from saying how "ashamed" he was at a plane carrying the message 'White lives Matter Burnley' over the Etihad Stadium during a 5-0 thrashing by Manchester City, the defender won plaudits for his football at Selhurst Park as the Clarets built on a 1-0 win over Watford.

Mee ended a three-year wait for a goal in the 62nd minute with a diving header from Ashley Westwood's free-kick after getting in front of Gary Cahill.

Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita got a hand to the ball but not a strong one and could only divert it in off a post for the only goal of the game.

Mee, simply saying it was "nice" to score,&nbsp;told Amazon Prime of the reaction to his post-match comments following the City defeat.

"I've been humbled by the response to the interview," he said. "It's nice to hear.&nbsp;

"The club got quite a few emails too which I read a few of. It wasn't a great night for us but we have responded really well to get two wins on the bounce."&nbsp;

Defeat dropped Palace down to 11th place but Roy Hodgson's men are still a comfortable 15 points clear of the relegation zone with six games to play despite a second successive defeat.

Former England boss Hodgson refused to blame his keeper for the loss, saying: "We did everything we could to find a way through but it didn't work out for us."

Burnley's victory was all the more impressive as they were without three first-choice forwards in Jay Rodriguez, Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes.

"We've had to change things with the stretched squad we have and we did very well," Burnley manager Dyche told the BBC.

Burnley could have opened the scoring in the 19th minute only for Dwight McNeil to shoot over the top from inside the area.

Palace created chances but Cahill and James McArthur were both off target.

In the second half, the video assistant referee was called in as Palace's Jordan Ayew avoided a red card for catching Josh Brownhill with his arm.

Then came the key moment, defender Mee stooping low for his first goal since January 2017.&nbsp;

Mee winner at Palace fires Burnley into eighth

Frank Lampard said Tuesday that Chelsea had not made a bid for free agent Angel Gomes and was tight-lipped over a link with West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.

Manchester United have confirmed London-born Gomes, 19, is leaving Old Trafford, with the highly rated attacking midfielder's services now in high demand.

Chelsea have been linked with a swoop for the England Under-20s star, but Blues boss Lampard rejected any interest out of hand.

Asked if Chelsea had made a bid for Gomes, Lampard told a press conference: "Yes, I can elaborate to the point that it's never been mentioned at my end, so that's it."

And when asked if there is any interest, Lampard added: "No."

Fourth-placed Chelsea will head to West Ham for Wednesday's Premier League clash looking for a sixth straight win in all competitions, and a fourth since the resumption of football after the coronavirus lockdown.

The Blues continue to be linked with a summer move for West Ham's 21-year-old England and ex-Chelsea academy star Rice.

But Stamford Bridge manager Lampard kept his cards close to his chest at his pre-match press conference.

"Declan Rice is a good player, you're right, and I've known Declan Rice for a long time, as he was in the Chelsea academy, but there's no talk," said Lampard.

"I keep saying, about every player we'll be asked about. Until these games and this season is finished, there's nothing to say."

Lampard has deployed France World Cup-winner N'Golo Kante in a more defensive position since the restart but said he remained hugely important to the side.

"I think with N'Golo I have a way I want him to work our midfield, where we have some fluidity to us, which allows N'Golo to bring his best attributes to the game," he said.

"N'Golo, since he has been here, has shown his attributes and qualities mean that he can play in pretty much any role in midfield that you want him to," he added.

"He is an incredible player, I keep saying it and I mean it -- he is huge for this club. He has been huge and he will be for a long time and I am happy with him."

Lampard rules out Chelsea move for free agent Angel Gomes

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has challenged Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford to improve, saying he is open to further strengthening his attack despite their impressive goalscoring form this season.

The Old Trafford giants are on course to have two players hit the 20-goal mark in the same campaign, in all competitions, since Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez in 2010/11.

Martial's first Manchester United hat-trick, against Sheffield United last week, took him level with Rashford on 19 goals, while 18-year-old academy graduate Mason Greenwood has found the net 12 times in a breakthrough season.

"I think all three that we have talked about have had a good development this season -- but they can be so much better," he said ahead of his side's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> match at Brighton on Tuesday.

"All three, I'm still waiting to see them blossom because there's parts of their game that they still need to improve on."

Odion Ighalo arrived on loan in January to bolster United's attacking options and Solskjaer said the strikers know his desire for them to improve comes with a need to "make decisions for the team and the club".

"If you think you've got a divine right to be playing every game and doing so well that we're not going to look for players to replace you, you're in the wrong place," he said.

"I've been here for so many years myself as a striker and Teddy Sheringham comes in, Dwight Yorke comes in, Ruud van Nistelrooy comes in, Wayne Rooney comes in.

"We've always got to look at improving. And if they don't improve, well, we might have to look somewhere else to get better because we have to be better.

"We're too far away from where we need to be and want to be."

United, unbeaten in 14 games in all competitions, are sixth in the Premier League table, five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the race for a Champions League spot.

Solskjaer dismissed the notion that United have an easy run-in, with matches against a group of relegation strugglers to come.

"It's the Premier League, with quality players and quality teams, so I would never ever say 'this is an easy game' in the Premier League," he said. "Absolutely no chance."

Premier League: Solskjaer warns Rashford, Martial to improve or risk being replaced

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters suggested the proposed Saudi&nbsp;takeover&nbsp;of&nbsp;Newcastle&nbsp;United had become complicated but hoped to have a conclusion to the process shortly.

The Premier League's board has been carrying out an examination of the proposed&nbsp;takeover&nbsp;as part of its 'owners and directors test' which evaluates the suitability of ownership groups.

A group fronted by British financier Amanda Staveley, with an expected 80% investment from the Saudi sovereign wealth fund PIF and 10% involvement from billionaire brothers David and Simon Reuben, made a reported 300 million pound ($375 million) bid to buy the club from British businessman Mike Ashley in April.

Speaking to a hearing of the British parliament's Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, Masters was asked about the uncertainty that&nbsp;Newcastle&nbsp;fans have been facing over their club's future.

"I do appreciate that uncertainty, I cannot comment in terms of timing or the specifics on any particular&nbsp;takeover&nbsp;but in a perfect world,&nbsp;takeovers would happen cleanly, clearly and in a timely fashion. Sometimes, things get complicated," he said.

Masters said that he was bound by confidentiality clauses in all&nbsp;takeover&nbsp;processes and so was not able to discuss details of the case.

"When they drag on, sometimes there's a requirement for information. It's a relatively rare occurrence," he said.

"I think it's very difficult to keep a constant dialogue with fans about what's an entirely confidential process.

"We can't provide a running commentary on things and, as I said, I just can't talk about the specifics of this particular process."

Masters said he hoped the process would conclude "shortly".

One of the issues that has been raised by critics of the&nbsp;takeover&nbsp;is Saudi Arabia's response to cases of unauthorised broadcasting of Premier League games in the country.

Earlier this month, a World Trade Organization (WTO) panel told Saudi Arabia it had breached global rules on intellectual property rights by failing to prosecute a pirate broadcaster of sports and movies in a dispute with Gulf neighbour Qatar regarding the BeoutQ channel, which broadcast Premier League games.

"BeoutQ is now off the air, and what we want, off the back of the WTO report, is for Saudi Arabia to respond positively the situation and to allow sports rights-holders to take their rights," said Masters.

Jurgen Klopp hints at silent transfer market for Liverpool, says 'we cannot spend millions'

Jurgen Klopp has urged Liverpool fans to celebrate "in a safe way" during the coronavirus crisis after chaotic scenes marred the club's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> title celebrations.

Thousands of Liverpool fans gathered at the Pier Head for a second night of celebrations on Friday after the club became champions of England for the first time in 30 years.

Police said officers were subject to violent confrontations and had glasses and bottles thrown at them as the celebrations continued in the city centre into the early hours.

Klopp, in an open letter to fans in the Liverpool Echo, said he "did not love" the scenes that took place at Pier Head.

"I am a human being and your passion is also my passion, but right now the most important thing is that we do not have these kind of public gatherings," wrote Klopp.

"We owe it to the most vulnerable in our community, to the health workers who have given so much and whom we have applauded and to the police and local authorities who help us as a club not to do this," he added.

Klopp said fans should celebrate in a safe way in private settings to avoid spreading the disease.

He added: "If things were different I would love nothing more than to celebrate together, to have a parade that would be even bigger than the one after we won the Champions League last year so that we could all share this special moment but it just is not possible."

The German boss urged fans not to let efforts to fight COVID-19 go to waste.

"When the time is right we will celebrate," he said. "We will enjoy this moment and we will paint the city red. But for now, please stay at home as much as possible."

In a joint statement with Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council on Saturday, the club criticised supporters who had ignored social-distancing advice.

Liverpool's mayor Joe Anderson condemned the scenes, saying they had brought a "negative focus" on the city.

Klopp also praised fans for their support during the season, which was interrupted for three months by the coronavirus.

He described it as "an incredible time for incredible supporters of an incredible club in an incredible city".

"I love your passion, your songs, your refusal to accept defeat, your commitment, your understanding of the game and your faith in what we are doing," he said.

Police said £10,000 ($12,000) worth of damage was caused to the Liver Building, one of the city's most famous landmarks, after a firework landed on a balcony on Friday.

A 19-year-old man has been charged with causing criminal damage and was due to appear at Liverpool magistrates' court on Monday.

The German boss urged fans not to let efforts to fight COVID-19 go to waste. "When the time is right we will celebrate," he said. "We will enjoy this moment and we will paint the city red. But for now, please stay at home as much as possible." In a joint statement with Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council on Saturday, the club criticised supporters who had ignored social-distancing advice.
