Liverpool's coronation as English champions for the first time in 30 years is the culmination of a dramatic journey since Jurgen Klopp's appointment as manager in 2015.

Klopp is the charismatic face of Liverpool's transformation from top-four contenders to Champions League winners and now P<a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">remier League</a> champions.

However, the Reds' success on the pitch has been made possible by plenty of shrewd work on signings and sales behind the scenes.

Of the 18-man squad named by Klopp in his first match in charge less than five years ago, only James Milner, Adam Lallana and Divock Origi have featured this season, in peripheral roles.

The construction of Liverpool's title-winning squad has been a steady process.

In Klopp's first summer transfer window, Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum arrived to help secure a return to the Champions League.

The next year they were joined by Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

By January 2018, a long pursuit of Virgil van Dijk resulted in the Dutchman becoming the world's most expensive defender for £75 million ($93 million).

Inspired by Salah's free-scoring form, the instant impact of Van Dijk and growing maturity of full-backs Robertson and academy graduate Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool reached the Champions League final in 2018.

Two howlers from Loris Karius against Real Madrid delayed a sixth European Cup win for a year, but what happened afterwards showed the club's ruthless desire to get back to winning major trophies.

Karius has never played another game for Liverpool as another world record fee, this time for a goalkeeper, was splashed on Alisson Becker from Roma.

Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri were also recruited in 2018 in a spending spree of more than £160 million.

"Maybe this season finally you demand they win," jibed then Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

Win is what they have done relentlessly for two years.

A mammoth total of 97 points was still not enough to win the title last season due to Manchester City's own stunning levels of consistency.

However, the upgrades for the 2018/19 season were rewarded in silverware with a Champions League triumph. On the way to the trophy Liverpool thumped Barcelona 4-0 in the second leg of the semi-final, even without the injured Salah and Roberto Firmino.

<h2>- Money well spent -</h2>

The momentum of Madrid rolled into this season, with only the coronavirus pandemic preventing possibly the earliest-ever crowning of English champions.

Yet, in an era of sheikhs and oligarchs, Liverpool's success is not in outspending their rivals, but doing so more efficiently.

According to transfer specialists Transfermarkt, Liverpool's net spend over the past five years is £109 million, less than the outlay of Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Brighton.

It is a testament to Klopp's managerial skill that the departure of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for £142 million in January 2018 did not derail his side's progress.

Sporting director Michael Edwards has played a huge role in giving Klopp the resources he wants to work with by extracting maximum value from departures.

The sales of Mamadou Sakho, Dominic Solanke, Danny Ward, Danny Ings, Christian Benteke and Jordon Ibe have helped contribute another £120 million.

"I must also highlight the role of our sporting director, Michael Edwards in this journey so far," said Klopp when he signed a contract extension to 2024 earlier this season.

"His input and collaboration has been just as important as anyone else's in getting us into a position to compete for the game's top titles."

Having climbed the mountain, Liverpool plan on staying there.

A host of key players including Salah, Mane, Firmino, Robertson, Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson have signed contract extensions in the past two years.

"Liverpool's squad is young and all the key players are tied down on long contracts. They have huge potential to win more trophies," former England captain Wayne Rooney, who also skippered Liverpool's two biggest rivals, Everton and Manchester United, admitted on Sunday.

The signing of highly rated 17-year-old Harvey Elliott and using a bargain £8 million buyout clause to secure Takumi Minamino from Red Bull Salzburg in January are further examples of Liverpool's long-term planning.

"For anyone in football who aspires to compete in an environment where every element of the organisation is at its very best – from the support of the supporters to the vision of the owners – there can be no better place than this," said Klopp.

Watch: How Liverpool players celebrated Premier League title win

When Liverpool were last crowned English champions, in April 1990, Margaret Thatcher was prime minister and the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> was two years away from its glitzy launch.

Now Jurgen Klopp's runaway leaders are a Manchester City stumble away from once again ruling the roost after seeing off Crystal Palace 4-0 on Wednesday.

If City fail to beat Chelsea on Thursday, then it will all be over.

In 1990 it was business as usual for Kenny Dalglish's dominant Reds, who had finished in the top two every year since 1973, apart from one season.

Their triumph came a year after the trauma of the Hillsborough disaster, which claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool fans after a terrace crush.

Off the pitch, Britain was in the final months of Thatcher's long premiership.

Fierce opposition to the ruling Conservative Party's plans for a "poll tax", which included riots in London, contributed to her downfall in&nbsp;November 1990.

Britain still faced a threat from the Irish Republican Army and was heading for an economic recession.

<h2>- Liverpool change -</h2>

The city of Liverpool suffered high unemployment and rioting during the turbulent 1980s.

Joe Moran, professor of English and cultural history at Liverpool John Moores University, said northern cities suffered during Britain's accelerated economic transformation under Thatcher from a traditional manufacturing base towards a more service-based, consumer-oriented economy.&nbsp;

Liverpool's long-term decline as a port exacerbated the problems.

"The year 1990 wasn't the bleakest year in the city's history but it was just coming out of it," said Moran.

"Hillsborough happened a year before and it wasn't really until the mid-1990s that the city was being transformed, partly because it was coming out of recession, and through European funding.

"Winning the title, it was more important because the city was going through quite a hard time."

<h2>- TV riches -</h2>

The football landscape was also radically different three decades ago, with the English game yet to be flooded with the TV riches that came with the launch of the Premier League.&nbsp;

Bryan Robson remained the most expensive footballer traded between English clubs, nine years after his £1.5 million ($1.9 million) transfer from West Brom to Manchester United.

Moran said the 1990 World Cup in Italy was a catalyst for the "complete transformation" of football.

"I think the commercial changes to football since 1990 are in some ways a more extreme version of what happened in society," he said.&nbsp;

"They were a sort of turbo-capitalism, a hyper-mercenary trade" in which a small group of clubs powered away from the rest financially.

Manchester United, under Alex Ferguson, were in prime position to take advantage of the money flooding into the game, establishing a dominance to match Liverpool's in the previous two decades.

But they are just one of seven different clubs who have won the English top-flight since 1990 on a list that includes Blackburn and Leicester.

Joe Blott, chairman of the Spirit of Shankly supporters group, says Liverpool's last title is a fading memory.

"You have to be about 40 years of age to remember the last time Liverpool won it," he said. "There's almost a generation-and-a-half of fans who are waiting to see Liverpool win the league for the first time.

Blott, 59, said the game itself had changed from a national league to a "global commodity".

Chelsea, backed by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, and Abu Dhabi-owned Manchester City have invested huge sums to win seven Premier League titles in the last 10 years.

Liverpool are also now American-owned, but Blott believes the Fenway Sports Group has invested wisely after the troubled days under previous American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

Blott reserves special praise for Klopp, who he says has produced a side that mixes flair and steel to stand alongside the great teams of the past.

"At the moment we have got for the first time since the heady days of winning everything the Holy Trinity of manager, players and fans pulling in the same way," he said.

"He just gets us," he said, talking about Klopp. "He's immersed in the Scouse, Liverpool mentality. He understands what it's like to be a football fan.&nbsp;

"He ensures everyone is part of the victories, part of the losses. If ever there was a son of (former manager Bill) Shankly it's certainly Klopp."

New generation of Liverpool fans prepares for title glory

Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero underwent knee surgery under Dr Ramon Cugat in Barcelona on Wednesday as the Argentina international said that the operation went well. Aguero injured his knee during the match against Burnley and was substituted by teammate Gabriel Jesus.&nbsp;

Man City went on to defeat Burnley 5-0 in what was a thumping performance by the defending <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> champions.&nbsp;

While manager Pep Guardiola initially said that the injury doesn’t look good, Man City would be encouraged by the high probability of Aguero being available for knockout stages of UEFA Champions League given the Blues advance to the Final 8. Guardiola earlier feared the 32-year-old could miss the rest of the league season which ends in July.

Premier League: Manchester City prolongs Liverpool's title wait after thrashing Burnley 5-0

All 20 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> sides have now had at least one experience of their 'new normal', adapting to empty stands and strict hygiene protocols to try and complete the season despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

There are also changes to how the game operates on the field with more substitutions, water breaks and a packed schedule of games altering managers' plans.

Yet, for all the disruption, much remained the same as Manchester City kept Liverpool waiting to seal the title and those at the other end of the table struggled to pull themselves clear of the relegation zone.

AFP Sports looks at five things we learned.

<h2>- Slow starts -</h2>

Of the 28 goals scored in the first 12 games, a mere eight have come in the first half as teams slowly get used to their new surroundings.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin reflected the feeling of many when he said playing a Merseyside derby against Liverpool with no atmosphere was "a little bit bizarre".

Players and managers are also wary of spending their energies too early after a three-month layoff and very little time training together to get up to speed.

<h2>- Five substitutions -</h2>

Another reason for a glut of late goals could be the impact made off the bench with coaches enjoying more choice than ever before.

Each team can make five substitutions with nine reserves on the bench to call on.

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho bemoaned the temporary change will only serve to help "the powerful clubs" and broaden the gap between rich and poor.

Mourinho made just two changes as Spurs wilted in the final stages against Manchester United, who netted a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw on Friday.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer acknowledged he had "quality players to come on and make a difference" after Paul Pogba's introduction made a big impact, winning the penalty from which Bruno Fernandes levelled.

Frank Lampard's substitutions also proved pivotal as Chelsea came from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1, with Christian Pulisic coming off the bench to equalise.

<h2>- Unnecessary water breaks -</h2>

Despite having an extra two substitutions, each side can still only stop the game three times to make changes.

That tinkering of the laws is designed to protect player welfare without continuously halting the flow of the game, but another new feature is doing just that.

A water break at the halfway point of each half has been implemented, no matter what temperature the game takes place in.

In practice, this has allowed managers an extra time out to get instructions across and often switch the momentum of the game.

<h2>- More of the same -</h2>

Silky football from City, a Merseyside derby stalemate, an Arsenal collapse and defensive calamities for Norwich, Bournemouth and Villa: the more things change, the more they stay the same.

City's title challenge to Liverpool was partly derailed by key injuries to Leroy Sane and Aymeric Laporte early in the campaign.

With a full compliment to now choose from, Pep Guardiola is spoiled for choice&nbsp;as he showed in making eight changes for Monday's 5-0 thrashing of Burnley.

Liverpool have still not lost a derby in 10 years, but a goalless draw at Goodison was also not so out of the ordinary. The last three Premier League meetings between the sides at Everton's home have now failed to produce a goal.

Aston Villa's 0-0 draw against Sheffield United is the only point any of the bottom four have picked up since the restart as all four fell to damaging home defeats this weekend.

<h2>- Take a knee takes hold -</h2>

After a 100-day wait for the Premier League to restart, it did so on one knee as all players, staff and referees took a knee before kick-off between Villa and Sheffield United.

Every game so far has followed in the same fashion as the Premier League has sent a strong message around the world in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign, although the start ot City's win over Burnley was marred by an aircraft circling the Etihad Stadium with a banner reading 'White lives matter Burnley'.

"It's powerful, it's given the movement global momentum to keep the conversation going," former Arsenal striker Ian Wright said of the Black Live Matters campaign.

However, pressure is now on the league to take action rather than make gestures.

The Premier League has so far resisted calls to introduce a NFL style "Rooney rule" that requires teams to interview ethnic minority candidates for senior coaching roles.

Five takeaways from the Premier League weekend

Liverpool will need favours from Manchester City to clinch a first <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> title in 30 years this week after being held to a 0-0 draw by Everton in a Merseyside derby without the usual fervour behind closed doors on Sunday.

Everton came the closest to breaking the deadlock as Tom Davies struck the post and Alisson Becker saved from Dominic Calvert-Lewin to deny the Blues a first derby win in 10 years.

Liverpool remain well on course to win the league with a 23-point lead over City at the top of the table.

The Reds could clinch the title on home soil against Crystal Palace on Wednesday should Pep Guardiola's men drop points at home to Burnley on Monday.

However, if City beat the Clarets and Chelsea on Thursday, Liverpool's next chance will come when they travel to their closest challengers on July 2.

"Both teams showed they understand it is a derby even without fans," said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. "Intense, physical, all players were all in."

The visitors began a derby like no other in the unfamiliar surroundings of a Portakabin in the Goodison Park car park before making their entrance from the opposite end of the ground to their hosts as Everton's tight tunnel leaves little room for social distancing.

"Everyone didn't know really what to expect," said Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk. "It was just good to be back out there."

<h2>- 'Bizarre' atmosphere -</h2>

As with all matches since the Premier League's restart, players and officials took a knee prior to kick-off, but Liverpool's Sadio Mane was caught unaware as he made a brief dash down the wing before returning to join his teammates.

Another consistent feature during the first full weekend of Premier League action since March was a slow start as both sides adjusted to the new surroundings of empty stands.

"It was strange," said Calvert-Lewin. "Playing with no fans it was a little bit bizarre with a game of this magnitude. Normally the place is bouncing so it was hard to get used to at first."

Klopp left Mohamed Salah on the bench for the full 90 minutes due to a minor injury problem.

Without the Egyptian and Andy Robertson's positive runs from left-back, Liverpool lacked their usual dynamism as they struggled to break the hosts down.

"We didn't have enough chances for the possession we had," added Klopp. "We have to be more clear in the right moment."

Roberto Firmino dragged the Reds best chance of the game wide in the first half, while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho tested Jordan Pickford with free-kicks.

But the longer the game went on, it was Everton who looked the more likely side to score on the counter-attack.

Richarlison fired a warning shot as he blazed over after getting in behind.

Calvert-Lewin's improvised flick then forced Allison into a fine save and Davies's follow-up effort came back off the post.

Calvert-Lewin then headed just wide from the resulting corner and Allison stood tall to deny Richarlison again as Everton scented a first derby victory in 22 attempts.

"We had two or three opportunities to score. We were a little bit unlucky," said Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti.

But both had to settle for a point as Liverpool failed to win in the Premier League for only the third time this season.

Liverpool look for Man City favours after derby deadlock

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes he can rekindle Paul Pogba's best form after the Frenchman made a big impact in his first appearance for six months in a 1-1 draw at Tottenham on Friday.

Solskjaer left the World Cup winner on the bench from the start, but Pogba won the penalty for United's equaliser, converted by Bruno Fernandes, with a sublime piece of skill to bamboozle Eric Dier.

Pogba has been beset by ankle injuries this season, making just nine appearances, and has been heavily linked with a move away from Manchester.&nbsp;

"Paul always has a point to prove because he wants to be the best," said Solskjaer. "He's had such a frustrating season with his injuries.

"For me Paul has shown today how he can contribute. I just look forward to getting him fitter so he can get back to his best."

A point does little for either side's chances of breaking into the top four.

United remain in fifth, two points behind Chelsea, but Spurs were even more desperate for the points as they remain in eighth, four points further back.

Jose Mourinho was on course to get the better of his former club when Steven Bergwijn's strike gave Spurs a half-time lead.

However, Mourinho was left frustrated when United's second half pressure finally told nine minutes from time when Fernandes converted from the spot.

Fernandes then thought he had won a second penalty, but a VAR review decided there was little contact as he went down under another challenge from Dier.

"We know Manchester United has an incredible record this season of penalties given, so we knew everything in the box was dangerous for us," said Mourinho.

"I think in the first penalty, the referee made this decision which I admit is difficult for referees, but then the VAR is a different story.

"Referees can make mistakes but I don't think VAR should make mistakes, then the second penalty is incredible for me."

In keeping with all matches since the Premier League's return earlier this week, all players and officials took a knee before kick in protest against racial injustice.

Once the action did get underway, United settled quickest to the eery surroundings of a 62,000 seater stadium draped in banners with the only fans appearing on giant video screens behind each goal.

Marcus Rashford has had a momentous week as the English international's campaign to ensure vulnerable children are not left without food vouchers during the English school holidays forced a government U-turn.

Solskjaer described the 22-year-old's action as far "more important than any game of football that he would probably play."

However, the England international admitted he was also desperate to get back to the day job after being sidelined since January with a back injury prior to the coronavirus-enforced shutdown of football for three months.

Rashford had the best chance to turn the visitors' early control into a goal as his low shot was beaten away by the legs of Hugo Lloris.

Prior to lockdown, Mourinho spoke of his desire to fast forward to the end of the season when he would have Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Moussa Sissoko and Bergwijn fit again.

All four were fit to return to the starting line-up and it was an inspired moment from the Dutchman which opened the scoring.

Bergwijn surged past the leaden-footed Harry Maguire before David de Gea could only parry his powerful shot into the roof of the net.

Tottenham sat on their lead after the break and invited plenty of United pressure.

Lloris kept United at bay with an incredible save to deny compatriot Anthony Martial.

Pogba was then introduced from the bench and made an instant impact in his first appearance since December 26.

The midfielder's quick feet left Eric Dier in his wake and Dier then pushed Pogba over inside the box as he tried to recover.

Fernandes coolly sent Lloris the wrong way from the penalty spot to deservedly level and moments later went down himself inside the box.

Jon Moss pointed to the spot again, but Rashford's chance to score the winner was taken from him as this time the VAR call went Mourinho's way.

Solskjaer delighted by Pogba's impact as penalty drama denies Man Utd

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is hoping to exact revenge on former employers Manchester United, while Liverpool aim to move within one win of the title as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a>'s return kicks up a gear across a four-day weekend of action.

The English top flight got its first taste of empty stands and strict hygiene protocols on Wednesday as Aston Villa's goalless draw with Sheffield United and Manchester City's 3-0 victory over Arsenal restarted the campaign.

Despite the muted atmosphere, there remains plenty to play for at both ends of the table with the clash between Tottenham and United pivotal in the battle for Champions League qualification.

Both sit outside the top four with nine games remaining. However, United's position in fifth could be good enough to secure a return to the Champions League if Manchester City's appeal against a two-season ban from European competition is unsuccessful.

Spurs could prove to be the biggest winners of the three-month lockdown.

Before the break, Mourinho claimed he could not wait for the season to finish as injuries to Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Moussa Sissoko and Steven Bergwijn appeared to have ended their campaigns.

All four are now fit again and victory would lift Tottenham to within one point of the club that sacked Mourinho in December 2018.

"The reality is we are now in a better position to where we were before," said Mourinho.

"We got Harry and Sonny back, the players with the best stats in terms of scoring and assists. They give us this kind of attacking power."

United were the form side in the league prior to the lockdown.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men are unbeaten in 11 games but also benefited from the break as Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba return from long-term injuries.

Rashford has made waves for his power off the field with a campaign to provide vulnerable children with food vouchers forcing a British government U-turn.

But the England international is desperate to get back on more familiar ground after being sidelined by a back injury since January.

"It's been a long time, but I think I needed it," Rashford told Sky Sports.

"Within my body I definitely feel confident again and ready to play games. The timing has worked out well for me."

Solskjaer said Pogba is "raring to go" after an injury-ravaged season and could be paired with January signing Bruno Fernandes in the United midfield for the first time.

<h2>- Liverpool excitement building -</h2>

City's victory over Arsenal means Liverpool cannot seal a first league title in 30 years against Everton on Sunday, much to the blue side of Merseyside's relief.

Jurgen Klopp's men are just two wins away from the historic feat and victory at Goodison Park will allow them the chance to win the league on home soil when Crystal Palace visit Anfield on Wednesday.

"You can feel it," said Klopp of the excitement building around his side's return. "I feel the intensity everywhere."

The match will take place in Liverpool despite fears over fans congregating outside both stadiums in the city. Goodison and Anfield are separated by less than a mile.

Klopp has urged his supporters to be "the best stay at home fans in the world".

The earliest Liverpool could now be crowned champions is on Monday should the Reds win and City lose at home to Burnley.

At the other end of the table, Norwich, Villa and Bournemouth sit in the relegation zone, but just three points separate second-bottom Villa from Brighton in 15th.

Rock-bottom Norwich can ramp up the pressure on those above them even more should they close to within three points of safety in the first match of the weekend against Southampton.

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is hoping to exact revenge on former employers Manchester United, while Liverpool aim to move within one win of the title as the Premier League's return kicks up a gear across a four-day weekend of action. They give us this kind of attacking power." United were the form side in the league prior to the lockdown. The timing has worked out well for me." Solskjaer said Pogba is "raring to go" after an injury-ravaged season and could be paired with January signing Bruno Fernandes in the United midfield for the first time. - Liverpool excitement building - City's victory over Arsenal means Liverpool cannot seal a first league title in 30 years against Everton on Sunday, much to the blue side of Merseyside's relief. Jurgen Klopp's men are just two wins away from the historic feat and victory at Goodison Park will allow them the chance to win the league on home soil when Crystal Palace visit Anfield on Wednesday. "You can feel it," said Klopp of the excitement building around his side's return. "I feel the intensity everywhere." The match will take place in Liverpool despite fears over fans congregating outside both stadiums in the city. Friday (all times GMT) Norwich v Southampton (1700), Tottenham v Manchester United (1915) Saturday Watford v Leicester (1130), Brighton v Arsenal (1400), West Ham v Wolves (1630), Bournemouth v Crystal Palace (1845) Sunday Newcastle v Sheffield United (1300), Aston Villa v Chelsea (1515), Everton v Liverpool (1800)

Mourinho meets familiar foes Man Utd as Liverpool resume title hunt

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is delighted his side have the chance to win a first <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> title in 30 years on the field after the uncertainty of a three-month halt to the season due to coronavirus.

The Reds hold a commanding 22-point lead at the top of the table and will seal the much-awaited title with victories over Everton on Sunday and when Crystal Palace visit Anfield on Wednesday.

Had the Premier League not been able to resume with the UK the worst-hit country in Europe from COVID-19, various proposals were discussed as to how the campaign would be decided.

The idea of declaring the season null and void gained little support and Klopp was relieved when that was taken off the table with Liverpool on course to smash a series of records after 29 games.

"I became worried in the moment when people started talking about null and void the season because I was like 'wow', I felt it physically because that would have been really, really, really hard," Klopp said in a pre-match videoconference ahead of Liverpool's return to action.

Had the Premier League followed the example of some other leagues around Europe by ending the season on a points-per-game basis, Liverpool would already be champions.

But Klopp is glad to have the opportunity to win it on the pitch, even if no fans will be in the stadium to witness the historic moment.

"We don't expect to get it as a present so we did not want it to happen on points-per-game (PPG). We were really happy when it was decided we could play again," he added.

"There were moments, you know how long the discussions were, people brought it up (null and void) from time to time for different reasons. When that was off the table I felt quite relieved.

"Now we are here. If they had done PPG and we could not have played we would probably be champions. Now we aren't, we have to play for it.

"That is great, that is how it should be in sports. Now we go for it. We do not think in our mind we are already there."

Liverpool will join the Premier League wide movement to support the Black Lives Matter (BLM) campaign with BLM replacing players' names on the back of shirts this weekend.

Klopp's squad took a knee on their return to group training earlier this month in solidarity with the fight against racial injustice.

The first two Premier League games of the restart on Wednesday were also preceded by all players and officials taking a knee.

Klopp has been outspoken on political and societal issues in the past and labelled the need to still be fighting racism in 2020 as "unbelievably dumb".&nbsp;

"If football is a role model for anything in life it is for that, that everybody is the exactly same, wherever you come from, it is all about who you are, not which colour you are," he added.

"It's so unbelievably dumb not to do it like this, it is really hard for me to even understand it.

"But it is like this so we have to stand up or we have to kneel down, whatever we have to do we will do just to solve this situation for now and for the future because the past we cannot change, but the future we can change."

Klopp relieved to escape 'null and void' outcome in Premier League

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has challenged Paul Pogba to show leadership at Manchester United as the midfielder seeks to put a wretched season behind him.

The World Cup winner has managed just eight appearances in all competitions due to foot and ankle problems and has not played since December.

United's record signing could make his long-awaited return when their Premier League campaign resumes at Tottenham on Friday, where Pogba would face former boss Jose Mourinho.

United manager Solskjaer said he was confident that Pogba, linked with a move away from Old Trafford earlier this season, would recover his best form.

"Paul is one of the best midfielders in the world, so of course we expect him to gradually improve as he gets more and more game time," he said.

"I don't know if it's 45 minutes this time, is it 60, is it... so gradually over these next few months we can work him up back to his best.

"Paul has had a very, very good career. Of course he is a World Cup winner and we want to have that leadership on the pitch as well."

United's midfield has improved markedly since the 27-year-old last played due to the January arrival of Bruno Fernandes, and the potential of the pair playing together is an intriguing prospect.

The three-month coronavirus suspension has also allowed England international Marcus Rashford to recover from his back injury.

United are unbeaten in 11 matches and pushing for Champions League qualification as well as FA Cup and Europa League glory.

The Norwegian manager said the break had been good for Mason Greenwood, 18, who has scored 12 goals in 36 appearances during his breakthrough season.

"Sometimes earlier on you could see he was a kid," he said.

"Now in training he can use his strength better and he has done really well over the three or four weeks we have been training now."

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Leroy Sane has rejected the opportunity to extend his current contract and would leave for another club in this summer transfer window or at the end of his contract in 2021. Reportedly, Bayern Munich are the front-runners to sign the German winger and have already agreed on personal terms with the winger.&nbsp;

Guardiola, during the pre-match press conference ahead of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> match against Burnley, said that he is disappointed that Sane has opted to part ways but he respects his decision and will help him till the last day of his stay with the Blues. Aston Villa and Sheffield United played out a goalless draw as the Premier League made a poignant re-start after the COVID-19 lockdown on Wednesday with strong statements against racism and an embarrassing failure of goalline technology.

In the first game back after a 100-day hiatus, visitors United were denied a legitimate goal at Villa Park when the ball crossed the line, but was not awarded, leading to an apology from Hawk-Eye, who provide the goalline technology system.

It was a let-off for Villa, who remained second-bottom in the table with 26 points, while Champions League-chasing Sheffield United moved sixth, a point behind Manchester United above them with nine games of the season remaining.

The match had begun with a strong statement of support for the worldwide protests against racism as the players and match officials all took a knee on the opening whistle.

All the players' names on the back of their shirts were replaced with the words ‘Black Lives Matter’ as the Premier League joined the international protest campaign sparked by the death of George Floyd in America.

There was also a moment's silence before kickoff in memory of those who died in the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis, which included the father of Villa manager Dean Smith.

The game's major talking point arrived just before halftime when off-balance Villa goalkeeper Orjan Nyland caught a curling free kick but was bundled back over the line by team mate Keinan Davis in a clumsy defensive mix-up.

Referee Michael Oliver, pointing to his watch, looked to indicate that goalline technology had not verified the ball had crossed the line, despite what appeared to be clear evidence on TV replays.

There was also no intervention from the Video Assistant Referee.

Hawk-Eye issued a statement after the game saying the seven cameras in the stands around the goal area were obstructed by the keeper, defender and goalpost.

“This level of occlusion has never been seen before in over 9,000 matches that the Hawk-Eye Goal Line Technology system has been in operation,” the company said, re-igniting the debate over technology in football.

The visitors will feel hard done by but also had goalkeeper Dean Henderson to thank for securing a share of the points in a lively affair on a rainy evening, where both sides showed a lack of match practice.

He made key saves in the second half, first to deny Davis and then push away a rasping shot from John McGinn on the hour mark as Villa, who lost 4-0 at Leicester City in their last game before the league was suspended on March 9, made six changes to their starting lineup.

Yet sloppy defending, a characteristic of Villa's play this season, almost came back to haunt them when a poor pass was intercepted only for John Lundstram’s 70th-minute effort to be blocked.

Neither side took advantage of the new rule allowing five substitutes, but Villa used four in another first for a league game in England.

The game was also stripped of its usual pre-match routine as both sides attempted to keep their distance amid strict health protocols, taking to the field separately and not shaking hands before kickoff.

The English Premier League restarted after a 100-day break due to the coronavirus pandemic as Manchester City and Arsenal players took a knee in solidarity with Black Lives Matter protests sweeping the world after George Floyd's killing in Minneapolis by a police officer.

A minute's silence was also observed for those who lost their lives due to the COVID-19 pandemic including Pep Guardiola's mother who passed away recently.

The goal came after Arsenal substitute David Luiz failed to deal with a ball into the box and allowed Sterling in on goal, and the Brazilian was at fault again for City's second.

His challenge saw him a red and gave a penalty Manchester City. Kevin De Bruyne took the penalty and scored.&nbsp;

David Luiz has taken the blame for the team's loss. "It's not the team's fault, it was my fault," he said. "Today I think the team did well, especially with 10 men, the coach is amazing, the players did amazing, it's just my fault.

"I decided to play, I should have taken another decision in the last two months, but I didn't. It was all about my contract, whether I stay or not. I have 14 days to be here, and that's it. Today was my fault."

Luiz produced a catalogue of errors in a torrid 25-minute cameo appearance as 10-man Arsenal suffered a heavy loss at City on the Premier League's return.

Guardiola's side wrapped up the win in stoppage time when Sergio Aguero hit the post, after a neat exchange with Sterling, and substitute Phil Foden slotted home the loose ball.

Manchester City defender Eric Garcia suffered a horror clash with goalkeeper Ederson during the match against Arsenal in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> and the youngster was stretchered off the field. The 19-year-old Spaniard was further taken to a hospital for further tests following which the club has provided an update regarding Garcia’s health.&nbsp;

Man City players including Ederson looked extremely worried when Garcia was lying flat on the field following the collision as medical staff rushed to attend the youngster. He was subbed off and took no further part in the match.&nbsp;

Manchester City defender Eric Garcia suffered a horror clash with goalkeeper Ederson during the match against Arsenal in Premier League and the youngster was stretchered off the field. The 19-year-old Spaniard was further taken to a hospital for further tests following which the club has provided an update regarding Garcia’s health. Man City players including Ederson looked extremely worried when Garcia was lying flat on the field following the collision as medical staff rushed to attend the youngster. He was subbed off and took no further part in the match. The good news is Garcia has been discharged from the hospital and met his teammates at the City Football Academy on Thursday morning as Ederson and Aymeric Laporte provided updates on social media. “Eric was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary Hospital after the game as a precaution for further tests. He will be monitored in the coming days, ahead of a return to training and competitive action. Everyone at Manchester City wishes Eric a speedy recovery,” read a statement from Man City. Man City vs Arsenal Preview: A battle between the master and apprentice

Premier League football returns on Wednesday after a three-month coronavirus-enforced absence.

Nothing realistically will stop Liverpool from being crowned English champions for the first time in 30 years.

But there are a whole host of other issues to sort out, including relegation and next year's European places, with the drama set to take place in empty, echoing stadiums.

AFP Sport takes a look at what still needs to be resolved.

<h2>When will Liverpool be champions?</h2>

Liverpool were 25 points clear of Manchester City and within touching distance of becoming English champions for the first time since 1990 when the league was suspended in March.

But while COVID-19 may have delayed their title party, nobody seriously believes it is not going to happen.&nbsp;

Two more wins would make it mathematically impossible for City to catch Liverpool, but the Reds could triumph by winning their first game, at Merseyside neighbours Everton on Sunday, if City lose at home to Arsenal on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp's men can also break two of City's most cherished records -- they need 19 points from the remaining 27 to beat the Manchester club's&nbsp;total of 100 points from the 2017/18 season and they could also better City's record title-winning margin of 19 points from the same campaign.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson lifted the Champions League trophy in a packed stadium in Madrid last June but is preparing for a different experience with the Premier League silverware being presented behind closed doors this year.

"Of course it would feel different because if you win any trophy and receive it without any fans there, it would be pretty strange," he told the BBC.

<h2>Champions League battle</h2>

Intriguingly, the battle for top-four spots could be extended to include fifth place.

Liverpool are assured of their place in the Champions League and the other qualifying berths are currently occupied by Manchester City, Leicester and Chelsea.

But as things stand, City cannot compete in Europe's top club competition for the next two seasons after being banned for financial fair play breaches.

Pep Guardiola's side have appealed, however, and could still hold onto their Champions League place next season if the suspension is overturned.

If it is upheld, whoever finishes fifth will take their place in next season's Champions League.&nbsp;

Manchester United currently occupy that position, but Wolves and Sheffield United are both just two points behind Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team.

Eighth-placed Tottenham and Arsenal, one spot lower, will also fancy their chances of finishing fifth with a late charge.

<h2>Battle to avoid the drop</h2>

Norwich, Aston Villa and Bournemouth occupy the bottom three places in the Premier League but all will harbour hopes they can escape the drop.

Norwich are rock-bottom and six points from safety but a win at home to Leicester in late February gave them hope.

Villa had lost four straight games before the shutdown so the break could end up helping Dean Smith's team, who have a game in hand over their rivals, while Eddie Howe will be desperate for Bournemouth to find some form after a run of seven defeats in 10 games.

Above the current bottom three, Watford are still in trouble despite their impressive initial revival under Nigel Pearson, while West Ham and Brighton are far from safe.

<h2>Fit to play</h2>

A clutch of top players will be raring to go after lengthy spells on the sidelines.

England striker Harry Kane is hungry for a return and Spurs team-mate Son Heung-min will also be able to feature after recovering from a broken arm.

Manchester United pair Paul Pogba, with just eight appearances this season, and Marcus Rashford, out of action since January with a back injury, should also feature.

Premier League return: the issues to resolve

After around three months of break, Pep Guardiola returned to his pre-match press conference routine albeit via video-conference. Manchester City are set to resume the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> 2019-20 campaign against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal on June 17 at the Etihad Stadium. Guardiola during the presser admitted that his players “are not ready” for the hectic scheduling of Premier League as the English top-flight looks to wrap up the season quickly.

With only three weeks to prepare for the resumption of the campaign, players may not achieve optimum fitness levels which could eventually lead to injuries. The Man City boss admitted that they need to rotate players given the number of matches cramped up in a short period of time. However, he accepted that it is important to finish the season so as to limit the economic damage to the clubs.

Pep Guardiola: Man City players not ready for hectic Premier League schedule

No spitting and no handshakes -- the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> season resumes on Wednesday looking very different from three months ago.

Amid the coronavirus crisis, the Premier League have issued detailed guidance before the big kick-off, stating: "Strict protocols have been put in place to ensure that stadiums are as safe as possible for everybody present."

AFP Sport takes a look at the new rules in place:

<h2>Stadium safety</h2>

About 300 people will be allowed into stadiums for each of the remaining 92 matches of the season.&nbsp;

Grounds will be divided into three zones: red, amber and green.&nbsp;Each zone has unique protocols and procedures.&nbsp;

Only those who have undergone tests in the five days before a match can enter the red zone in any stadium, which includes the pitch, technical area, tunnel and dressing rooms.&nbsp;

Those individuals must have a "clinical passport" -- a bar code that shows their most recent test result is negative -– before being granted access.&nbsp;

<h2>Pre-match</h2>

Players and staff are required to undergo daily screening for the virus. Before leaving for a match, they must complete relevant checks for COVID-19 and report any symptoms.&nbsp;

Teams can travel to the stadium via car, coach, plane or train, but must do so in sterile environments and must observe social distancing.&nbsp;

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, whose team visit Aston Villa in the opening game of the relaunch on Wednesday, said: "We are going on three buses. The main guys are on the first one, so you will see the team from who gets off first."

Players and staff will be given a sterile route from their vehicles to the dressing rooms, which must have enough space to allow for suitable social distancing. &nbsp;

Teams will be encouraged to stagger their use of changing rooms. Showers can be used, as long as individuals remain socially distanced.

Sheffield United will not use the away dressing room at Villa Park and have instead been allocated a press room and players' lounge to change in.

"We are changing in a big media room at Villa Park, not in the changing rooms and our players have to stay two metres apart when there is a break in play," Wilder said.

At some stadiums, teams will use different tunnels. Where there is one tunnel, players and match officials will stagger their journeys to and from the pitch.

<h2>Hygiene</h2>

Widespread disinfection will take place including of changing facilities, dugouts, matchballs, goalposts, corner flags and substitution boards.&nbsp;

People other than players and coaching staff on team benches must wear face coverings.

<h2>No handshakes</h2>

When teams line up for the Premier League anthem, players will now stand in a staggered formation.

The traditional handshakes between the two teams will no longer happen and there will also be no handshakes at the coin toss.&nbsp;

Trainers' benches will be expanded to enable social distancing during matches.

<h2>Spitting ban</h2>

Players have been told to maintain distancing during goal celebrations. No spitting or nose-clearing is allowed and players will use their own water bottles.

In the Bundesliga, Hertha Berlin defender Dedryck Boyata found himself in hot water last month after grabbing the face of team-mate Marko Grujic.

Boyata apologised, saying players had to "adapt" to the new rules.

Premier League players have also been told to avoid mass confrontations with opponents or match officials and to try to restrict interaction with opponents after the match.

Hygiene Widespread disinfection will take place including of changing facilities, dugouts, matchballs, goalposts, corner flags and substitution boards. People other than players and coaching staff on team benches must wear face coverings. No handshakes When teams line up for the Premier League anthem, players will now stand in a staggered formation. The traditional handshakes between the two teams will no longer happen and there will also be no handshakes at the coin toss. Trainers' benches will be expanded to enable social distancing during matches. Spitting ban Players have been told to maintain distancing during goal celebrations.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder and Aston Villa boss Dean Smith said they were aware the eyes of the world would be on their match when they relaunch the Premier League on Wednesday.

The high-flying Blades travel to Villa Park for the first game in the English top-flight after a three-month suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Later on Wednesday, Manchester City host Arsenal, with 92 games packed into just five-and-a-half weeks.

"First game back is going to be a little bit different, what we understand is the magnitude of the game, the coverage of the game," Wilder said at his pre-match video press conference on Monday.

"Villa-Sheffield United was a Championship game last year and would possibly have been seventh or eighth on (BBC's) Match Of The Day and now it is 6:00 pm on the TV and worldwide coverage.

"From our point of view we want to put on a good show and make sure we play well."

Sheffield United, who have 10 games to play, are seventh in the table, chasing Champions League football.

They could move up to fifth place with three points at Villa Park, but Wilder will not allow himself to get distracted by talk of Europe.

"If it gets to the situation where we are one or two games out and we are still in a fantastic position then we will possibly talk about that," said Wilder.

"But at the moment we have quarter of a season to go, near enough. I am sure that you have seen the fixture list as such as I have seen it. There are some incredible challenges in front of us."

<h2>- 'Itching' to play -</h2>

Villa manager Smith, whose side are in the relegation places, said it was an honour to be playing the first game in the English top-flight since March.

Victory over the Blades, their game in hand over their relegation rivals, would take them out of the drop zone with nine matches remaining.

"The eyes of the world will be on us and we are looking forward to it," said Smith.

"The players have been itching to get back," he added.&nbsp;

Smith questioned the temporary rule change to allow five substitutions during games, saying it would benefit certain clubs. Teams can also name nine substitutes instead of seven.

"I wasn't for it," he said. "I just believe we started the season with certain rules and now we have changed it. I suppose it helps the clubs with the bigger squads.

"There was talk to change it because there is more risk of injury but having more subs doesn't help that. I just wanted it to stay as it was. I think Sheffield United were the same."

Wilder confirmed Sheffield United would extend highly rated goalkeeper Dean Henderson's loan deal in the next few days.

The England Under-21 international is close to agreeing an extension from Manchester United until the current season ends.

Sheffield Utd, Villa braced for Premier League restart in global spotlight

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has pleaded with the British government to continue to supply free meals for children in poorer families during the summer holidays in a letter "written from the heart".

Children eligible for free school meals have received food during the coronavirus lockdown, often in the form of vouchers to spend at supermarkets.

About 1.3 million disadvantaged pupils are entitled to free school meals but the scheme in England will not run during the school holiday period, which starts in July.

England international Rashford, who has helped raise around £20 million ($25 million) for FareShare, a charity that fights hunger and food waste, received free meals as a child.

"The government has taken a 'whatever it takes' approach to the economy -- I'm asking you today to extend that same thinking to protecting all vulnerable children across England," he wrote in an open letter to lawmakers.

"I encourage you to hear their pleas and find your humanity. Please reconsider your decision to cancel the food voucher scheme over the summer holiday period and guarantee the extension."

Rashford, 22, added: "As a black man from a low-income family in Wythenshawe, Manchester, I could have been just another statistic.

"Instead, due to the selfless actions of my mum, my family, my neighbours, and my coaches, the only stats I'm associated with are goals, appearances and caps."

Rashford, last week named the fifth most valuable player in Europe, told the BBC the letter was "written from the heart".

"What families are going through now, I've once had to go through that -- and it's very difficult to find a way out. It's very important for me to help people who are struggling," he said.

A spokesman for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Johnson would respond to the letter.

"He (Rashford) has been using his profile in a positive way to highlight some very important issues," the spokesman said.&nbsp;

"The prime minister understands the issues facing families across the UK, which is why last week the government announced an additional £63 million for local authorities to benefit all families who are struggling to afford food and other basic essentials."

Rashford makes emotional plea for rethink on free school meals

When Manchester City wanted some tips ahead of the Premier League restart, the defending champions turned to a team trying to avoid relegation.

As players were suddenly ordered home and stadiums emptied, Brighton became a voice of the league during the three-month coronavirus pandemic shutdown. The south-coast club's boardroom leaders, coaches and players guided not just their own supporters but the league's wider fan base as well through an unprecedented time in English footballing history.

Financial struggles for clubs even in the world's wealthiest league. Health fears about returning to training "let alone playing"&nbsp;too soon. Concerns about not being allowed to play in home stadiums.

For 11 weeks out of the last 12 &nbsp;"on a Thursday or Friday"&nbsp;gaining regular on-the-record accounts of the trepidations of a Premier League club was just a Zoom call away for the media. Brighton's decision to not step away from questioning during the pandemic often meant that the thoughts of its owner, chief executive, manager or players set the tone for the public debate about how and when the league would resume.

"We haven't set out to be the dominant voice," Brighton CEO Paul Barber said from his sofa at home during one of the Zoom calls.
"It's just been a by-product of what we've done."

It was a rare chance for Brighton to dominate the news agenda at times. Larger clubs, like Manchester City, know they will be the subject of radio phone-ins and back-page transfer speculation even without there being any games.

"It maybe just fills a small gap in people's lives," Barber said, "when football cannot be played."

Now the competition is resuming, the rest of the league is catching up with Brighton. With social distancing still enforced, even as the national lockdown is eased in England, video calls will replace media going to club training grounds to speak to managers for match previews.

So City's communications team logged into Brighton's Zoom call with manager Graham Potter on Thursday to learn about the technology. City manager Pep Guardiola is due to hold his first virtual news conference on Tuesday on the eve of Arsenal visiting the Etihad Stadium for the league's first games in 100 days.

The fact City is playing at home might owe something to Barber's very public opposition to calls from police for the season to be completed in neutral stadiums. The intention was to prevent fans from congregating outside games that will be closed to spectators, but Barber believed it would have harmed the sporting integrity of the competition.

Now it is likely all remaining 92 games will be played in the stadium of the home teams.

"We're not seeking to get any kind of edge from what we do," Barber said, when recently discussing Brighton's decision to be so public during the shutdown.

"We certainly didn't set out to have the biggest share of voice."

But no other club's top executive faced wider media questioning "especially so regularly"&nbsp;in an attempt to provide some clarity amid so much uncertainty.

"We understand that we're not the oracle on these matters," Barber said.

"It has helped us with our fans and with our sponsors. We get hundreds of emails a week, asking us the question that you (reporters) ask us ... It gives us an opportunity through a range of different media organizations to answer those questions. But we haven't set out to dominate the airwaves."

Still, it gave a platform for players like Brighton striker Glenn Murray to urge against a rush to resuming the league.

"I have children at home," he said in late April.

"I wouldn't want to jeopardize them."

Murray articulated why players could not agree to 30 per cent pay cuts all squads were being asked to take.

"Every player has different situation," he said.

"Some will be very lucky and they will not have a mortgage and they have money to spare."

The calls also provided a deeper insight into the running of a Premier League club. Academy manager John Morling appeared one week to explain how younger players were coping being away from their teammates for so long. The answer was organizing a

"Brighton's Got Talent" where players could show their guitar, skateboard and DJing skills.

"You see the players in a totally different light," Morling said.

"That is something we have got to keep trying to do and keep everything positive because some families are finding it hard."
Now, though, the priority is staying two points &nbsp;"or more"&nbsp;above the relegation zone. Potter's side hosts Arsenal on Saturday afternoon at the Amex Stadium, and not a neutral venue.

"We're more towards getting things back on track and society moving again," Potter said.

"We want to do what we're paid to do, which is play football and we're ready." And not just to talk a good game.

How Brighton was a voice of Premier League during shutdown?

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> finally makes its long-awaited return on June 17 following a three-month coronavirus lockdown.

The landscape has changed since March -- clubs have welcomed back injured players, others have had a chance to regroup and Liverpool have had to come to terms with a low-key title celebration.

AFP Sport looks at the winners and losers as teams emerge from the lockdown.

<h2>Healed stars boost Spurs, Man Utd</h2>

When we last saw Jose Mourinho, the Tottenham manager cut a despondent figure as he admitted he wished he could fast-forward to next season.

At the time, injury-hit Tottenham were on a six-match winless run that saw them knocked out of the Champions League and FA Cup, while falling seven points adrift of the top four.

However, no boss has benefited more from the three-month break than Mourinho and eighth-placed Tottenham will return rejuvenated after Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Steven Bergwijn, Erik Lamela and Moussa Sissoko regained their fitness.

That should be the ideal boost for the race to qualify for the Champions League, especially with a crucial first game of the restart against top-four rivals Manchester United.

United, four points above Tottenham in fifth place, were frustrated when the season ground to a halt.

Inspired by influential January signing Bruno Fernandes, they were riding the momentum of an 11-game unbeaten run in all competitions dating back to January.

Crucially, the return of injured England forward Marcus Rashford and France midfielder Paul Pogba promises to add pep to their step at just the right time, with the Tottenham showdown followed by another vital fixture against seventh-placed Sheffield United.

<h2>Relegation rivals scrap for survival</h2>

With dire warnings over the long-term financial health of football ringing in their ears, clubs embroiled in the relegation dogfight have been focused on self-preservation.

Feuding over how to decide the season in the event it has to be abandoned, complaining about potentially playing at neutral venues and arguing that the season was restarting too soon have all been public relations own goals from clubs most in danger of going down.

Brighton will be under immense pressure to perform, having argued so vocally against neutral venues.&nbsp;

Without a win in 2020, they are just two points above the relegation zone and have games against Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City to come.

Watford, out of the bottom three by virtue of goal difference, were also vocal critics of the neutral venue proposal.&nbsp;

The Hornets would fall into the relegation zone if Aston Villa won their game in hand, but favourable home matches against Southampton, Norwich and Newcastle offer hope of beating the drop.

Second-bottom Villa, who have suffered four straight league defeats, have had a chance to regroup at a time when they were in danger of collapsing.

Third-bottom Bournemouth, winless in four matches, will also hope the break provides a springboard to survival.

<h2>Liverpool's title anti-climax</h2>

Instead of jubilant supporters hailing their heroes for ending Liverpool's 30-year wait to be crowned English champions, the Reds' impending title triumph in an empty stadium is likely to feel anti-climactic.

Jurgen Klopp's side are 25 points clear at the top and need a maximum of two wins from their remaining nine games to seal a 19th English title in emphatic fashion.

The trophy could be theirs as soon as June 21 if second-placed Manchester City lose to Arsenal and Liverpool beat Merseyside rivals Everton.

But with the rest of the season to be played behind closed doors, the mood around the club has gone slightly flat.

The prospect of Liverpool having to delay their parade through the city with the trophy until next year due to social-distancing rules is another blow.

No wonder former Arsenal striker Alan Smith, who famously won the title at Anfield with the Gunners on the last day of the 1988/89 season, said: "If Liverpool do eventually get crowned, it's going to prove a massive anti-climax.

"I can't help but feel sorry for Sadio Mane, Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and all who deserve every plaudit going for a magnificent effort."

Player names to be replaced by 'Black Lives Matter' in Premier League's opening round

Premier League clubs enjoyed a record 5.2 billion pounds ($6.65 billion) of revenue in the 2018-19 season, according to data released by Deloitte on Thursday, but income is expected to decline in the short-term due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The English top flight reinforced its reputation as the richest soccer league in the world by posting a 7% year-on-year increase in revenue, primarily driven by UEFA distributions to the clubs.

Four English clubs featured in the finals of Europe’s two club competitions last season. Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur to lift the Champions League trophy, while Chelsea thrashed Arsenal to claim the Europa League title.

The novel coronavirus outbreak, however, has disrupted the 2019-20 season for the major European leagues.

The report anticipates the Premier League to lose around 1 billion pounds in revenue this season, despite plans to restart the competition on June 17.

Almost 500 million pounds will be lost permanently due to loss of matchday revenue and rebates on broadcast and commercial deals.

The other half is expected to be deferred to the 2020-21 financial year, given almost a quarter of the season will be played beyond June 30.

“Football returning – in a safe and sensible way - is clearly important to limiting the financial impact that the pandemic has had,” Dan Jones, partner and head of the Sports Business Group at Deloitte.

“Much remains uncertain, particularly around the timing and scale of the return of fans to stadiums and the impact on commercial and broadcast partners’ wider businesses.”

The European football market as a whole generated a record 28.9 billion euros ($32.99 billion) in the 2018-19 campaign, with the big five leagues in England, Spain, Germany, France and Italy contributing 17 billion euros, a 9% increase from the previous year.

Premier League clubs post record revenue but face COVID-19 impact - report

The Premier League is gearing up for resumption of the 2019-20 season after the clubs unanimously voted in favour of contact training on Wednesday. The English top-flight league is eyeing June 19/20 as the possible dates for the return of the halted season and, in all likelihood, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool will be crowned champions of England after a 30-year wait.&nbsp;

Not only the United Kingdom but the entire world has witnessed unprecedented scenarios created by the dreaded COVID-19. While some countries have tackled it well and are heading towards the resumption of normal activities, the Premier League will come as a fresh breath of air for fans of the most-watched league in the world.&nbsp;

Former Liverpool captain John Barnes, in an exclusive interview&nbsp;with WION’s Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo,&nbsp;spoke on a range of topics as he discussed&nbsp;Liverpool’s stellar season and what separated them from Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.&nbsp;

Liverpool came mighty close to lifting the Premier League trophy last season only to see Manchester City topple them for the coveted title by just one point. However, Liverpool went on to lift their sixth UEFA Champions Trophy and the Club World Cup last season in what was regarded as a splendid season for the Reds.&nbsp;

While Manchester City faltered in the 2019-20 season, Liverpool maintained the consistency and took a&nbsp;25-point lead atop the Premier League table and when the most-watched league in the world resumes, the Reds will look to complete the formality and put the red bands on the Premier League trophy, ending a two-season winning run for Guardiola's Man City.

Barnes hopes that Klopp will continue to motivate the players and win more trophies in future while adding that this could be a start of another great era for the Reds.&nbsp;

"Hopefully, the season will start soon. There are a lot of people who are pushing for the season to be scrapped and straightaway begins the next campaign, which is ridiculous. The German Bundesliga plans to finish the current campaign by the end of June, which leaves them with more than enough time to begin the next season as scheduled. So the Premier League can also easily follow that precedent and finish the current season in about six weeks or two months," Barnes said.&nbsp;

"As for Liverpool, I think unless there is a calamity, they are going to crowned champions. I think it's not just about this season, the team cannot take their foot off the gas and rest on their laurels if they do manage to win the Premier League. A true marker of success is being able to win trophies for a sustained period of time. The team will enjoy the triumph, but then the focus should shift to the next season. Jurgen Klopp will hopefully drive the players to maintain such levels of performance in the years to come. I hope this is the start of another great era in the history of the club when the Reds can challenge for the domestic league title and Champions League title every season, as they did in the past. The league triumph will no doubt be fantastic for the club, but the success must not stop there," the former Liverpool skipper added.

Interestingly, Liverpool have lost just one Premier League in the 2018-19 season in what has been termed as one of the greatest seasons, if not the greatest, in the history of English top-flight football. Barnes is of the view that Man City suffered a dip due to injuries to key defenders, whereas Liverpool have learned not to take that foot off the gas during crucial moments in the league. The former left-winger, who also played as an attacking midfielder, said Klopp has maximised club's potential to be consistent.

"Liverpool only lost one Premier League match in the 2018-19 season as well, so it is not as if they are performing considerably better than last year. In fact, I think Liverpool were playing better football last season, but Manchester City was just unstoppable. This season, there has been a dip in city's performances, largely because of they have lost key defensive players to injury. Whereas Liverpool have continued to be consistent, so I think nothing has changed from last season.

"In the 2018-19 campaign, Liverpool missed out on the league title despite having 97 points, but still won the Champions League crown. This season Liverpool have been knocked out of the Champions League in the knockout stages, but are well on their way to win the league crown, so Jurgen Klopp has maximised the club's potential to be consistent. Manchester City have been inconsistent this season, whereas Liverpool have been consistent, that's the difference. Those two teams are still superior to the other teams in the league. It comes as no surprise to me that Liverpool and Manchester City have been the two most successful clubs in England over the last two years, because the manager in both those clubs is truly the man in charge, the power doesn't lie with the owners or the players," Barnes said.

How Klopp and Guardiola have taken control of their respective clubs is something English football has been lacking for a while. Both the managers, highly respected, have authority over their players and that has come as a welcome step for both Liverpool and Man City as they become the two of the most dominating sides in the history of English and world football.

"If Liverpool lose a game, the fans aren't going to blame Klopp. Similarly, if he drops Mo Salah, the club won't get on his back because the players realise that he is the man in charge and the ultimate decision lies with him. At other clubs, when the team loses, the blame is put on the manager rather than the players, which makes the footballers feel more empowered and in a way makes them less accountable. At Liverpool and Manchester City, players will be criticised for poor performances and not just the managers. The most important thing is that the players should know that the manager is the man in charge. Player power is now a big issue all over the world, where players are seen as more important than the managers. The clubs in which the players have been calling the shots have been inconsistent. A manager's role is undermined when the players are made to seem more important," Barnes explained.
