The tests were carried out on more than 1,700 women in Singapore, New Zealand and the United Kingdom who have been planning to conceive. In these tests, it was found that most of them were lacking nutrients which are found in abundance in dairy and meat products and are important for healthy development of foetus. 
 
“We were surprised at how common low or marginal status was for these micronutrients,” said Prof Keith Godfrey, who is the lead author of the study at the University of Southampton and an epidemiologist.

The women, who were between the age group of 18 to 38, were included in the Nipper study – which is an international trial that has been exploring whether combinations of nutrients as well as probiotics taken before and during pregnancy help in improving the health of the babies and their mothers. 
 
The blood levels of vital nutrients were measured by the doctors after the women were recruited and they were randomly assigned to either a standard vitamin supplement for pregnant women which contains folic acid, beta-carotene, iron, calcium and iodine, and an enhanced version which contained additional riboflavin, vitamins B6, B12 and D, probiotics, zinc and myo-inositol, which is a form of sugar.

The Indian Supreme Court has turned down the plea of a 26-week pregnant woman for abortion on the grounds that she is suffering from a mental condition called post-partum psychosis.

The apex court also admitted the central government’s submission that it is willing to undertake the expenses of delivery and if parents desire, facilitate the child's adoption.

In the petition, the woman, who already has two children, said that she was suffering from post-partum psychosis and was not in a position to raise a third child, emotionally, financially, and physically.

The bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud reached the decision based on a report by the AIIMS medical board that the pregnancy is not an immediate danger to the life of the woman and that the foetus is healthy.

<h2>Violates law&nbsp;</h2>

The court denied permission to terminate the pregnancy since its duration had crossed the 24-week mark and added that letting the married woman to continue with her decision would violate Sections 3 and 5 of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act.

Abortion is allowed under the MTP Act if the pregnancy doesn’t cross 24 weeks mark for married women, for special categories including survivors of rape, and other vulnerable women, such as the differently-abled and minors.

"This court is averse to passing such a direction. The petitioner also doesn't wish to do the same," the court said, reported LiveLaw outlet.

The top court also brushed aside an intervention during the proceeding that sought to challenge the upper limit for medical termination.

The court stated that the challenge to the existing law would be addressed through separate proceedings, while the ongoing petition shall remain a matter exclusively between the petitioner and the state.

<h2>‘24-week guideline obsolete’</h2>

Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, who was arguing on behalf of the petitioner, cited a report of the World Health Organisation (WHO) which had already termed the 24-week guideline ‘obsolete’.

A recent Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) survey released on Tuesday has revealed distressing findings regarding care during pregnancy.&nbsp;One in five women in the United States has&nbsp;reported that she encountered mistreatment, including scoldings, during pregnancy and delivery care at the hands of the nation's health professionals.

The CDC study found that this mistreatment was more prevalent among Black, Hispanic, and multiracial women, as well as those without private insurance coverage.

In a statement, Dr Debra Houry, the CDC's Chief Medical Officer, said that "These data show that we must do better to support moms."

Furthermore, the type of insurance coverage held by women also played a part in their pregnancy healthcare experiences.

Pregnant women without insurance — which account for 28 per cent of those surveyed, or those with public insurance (26 per cent) reported higher rates of mistreatment compared to women with private insurance coverage (16 per cent).

Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra stressed that "every mother deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Maternal care is a core component of this nation's health care." He also said, "Bias, stigma, and mistreatment have no place in our healthcare system."

Scientists said that the genes which enable one species of fruit fly to reproduce without sperms fertilising their eggs have been identified by them. The researchers then genetically tweaked another species which normally reproduces sexually to do the same thing. 
 
“We’re the first to show that you can engineer virgin births to happen in an animal – it was very exciting to see a virgin fly produce an embryo able to develop to adulthood, and then repeat the process,” stated Dr Alexis Sperling, first author of the paper outlining the study and a researcher at the University of Cambridge, while speaking to The Guardian.

The study which has been published in the journal Current Biology was conducted in six years and made use of 220,000 flies. The researchers first observed one species of fruit fly called Drosophila mercatorum, and understood its ability to reproduce through virgin births, which can also be called parthenogenesis. 
 
Through sequencing the genome of the fly and identifying the gene which is involved in virgin birth, the researchers could identify the corresponding gene in fruit fly's another species called Drosophila melanogaster and alter that gene to turn it on.

<h2>Virgin births to work as&nbsp;reproductive backup</h2>

The offspring of produced from such genetically modified flies could reproduce either by mating with males or through virgin births. Sperling said taking the path of virgin birth can be hugely beneficial for the species and may work as a reproductive backup for isolated females. 
 
“If there’s continued selection pressure for virgin births in insect pests, which there seems to be, it will eventually lead to them reproducing only in this way. It could become a real problem for agriculture because females produce only females, so their ability to spread doubles,” she added.

Sperling stated that although recent research has discovered a way to “switch on” virgin births in fruit flies, it is unlikely that this approach will work in mammals, even though parthenogenesis has been observed in animals such as lizards and honey bees. 
 
“Mammals are very separate and it is not a natural occurring phenomenon,” said Sperling. However, she said that the research helped to “understand the beauty of life itself” and “this different type of reproduction”. 
 
Dr Hannah Maude at Imperial College London, speaking to The Guardian, said, “Our diversity protects us: having two copies of the DNA not only provides a backup for harmful DNA variants – found in every person – but is necessary for so-called imprinted regions that are specifically active from the maternal or paternal DNA copy,”

Similarly, a team from the University of Southern California discovered that certain gene variants associated with GDF15 could heighten the likelihood of a severe form of morning sickness.

They have observed significantly elevated levels of GDF15 in pregnant women experiencing severe morning sickness, compared to those with milder symptoms.

Additionally, their study, which is pending peer review, revealed that women with higher levels of GDF15 in their bloodstream prior to conception were less prone to severe sickness after becoming pregnant.

<h2>What does it mean?</h2>

The study highlighted the possibility of reducing the risk of severe forms of morning sickness&nbsp;during pregnancy by increasing GDF15 levels in women before conception.

"Strategies which safely increase circulating GDF15 levels prior to pregnancy may be useful in the prevention of these conditions," the study noted.

Some companies are already developing treatments to lower GDF15 levels for other ailments that cause nausea and vomiting.

In an exclusive conversation with WION,&nbsp;Dr&nbsp;Seema Thareja, MBBS, MD (Consultant Obstetrics &amp; Gynecology) at&nbsp;Apollo Cradle &amp; Children's Hospital Moti Nagar New Delhi, shared, "Planning a pregnancy is an exciting and joyful time for many couples. According to the HC, the current order is being issued given the specific facts and circumstances of the case.

“The family has assured that in case the foetus is born alive considering the age of the foetus, the family would give adequate care in the nursery of LNJP,” the court recorded.

Anuj Kapoor, an attorney representing the survivor's&nbsp;mother, stated that if a situation like that occurred, "we will revive the writ petition and will seek appropriate directions." The judge, however, stated that while they have permission to file the application, they must care for the infant in the interim period.&nbsp;

The medical board's opinion is that a pregnancy can be terminated, but there are some risks due to the girl's low haemoglobin and the baby's gestational age of 27 weeks. This information was provided to the court by two doctors from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Neonatology, LNJP, who had joined the hearing virtually.

The study is published in PLOS Medicine based on data from 9,498 women who developed breast cancer in the age group between 20s and 40s. After five years of usage of oral contraceptives, almost 8 in every 100,000 women were found to have developed breast cancer in the age group 16 to 20. On the other hand, 265 in every 100,000 women from the age group 35 to 39 were found to have developed breast cancer.

However, researchers are of the view that the drawbacks of using oral contraceptives must be rationally weighed against the proven benefits. Claire Knight of Cancer Research UK made it clear that the findings of the new study must not discourage women from using oral contraceptives as they were one of the most effective ways to avoid pregnancy.

Claire said, “There are lots of possible benefits to using contraception, as well as other risks not related to cancer. That’s why deciding to take them is a personal choice and should be done after speaking to your doctor so you can make a decision that is right for you.”

Although condoms generally stop the fertilisation of eggs by restricting the semen from entering the vaginal canal, it carries the risk of ripping, or slipping off if not worn correctly. The condoms also carry an expiration date and can get damaged by light and heat. During use, a dried-out, old condom is more likely to tear, while&nbsp;those using latex condoms also face the risk of latex allergy.&nbsp;

Conventional vasectomy, which is also called male sterilisation, is a surgical procedure for permanent birth control. A vasectomy starts providing contraceptive protection around 8 to 12 weeks after the procedure. It is permanent, and cannot always be reversed. Couples planning a baby at a later stage of life cannot get the vasectomy reversed.

The 'pill'&nbsp;discovery&nbsp;

On February 14, the journal Nature Communications published an early study which found that the sperms of mice were immobilised before, during and after mating by a single dose of the drug TDI-11861. For around two hours, the contraceptive proved 100 per cent effective in the prevention of pregnancy. After 24 hours, the mice regained their full fertility.&nbsp;

As per a report published in New Scientist, “The team assessed the movement of sperm collected from 17 male mice, eight of whom received the drug. In samples collected two hours after mice received the drug, only about six per cent of sperm were mobile on an average compared with about 30 per cent in samples from control mice."

The study's lead author Dr Melanie Balbach said, “Our inhibitor works within 30 minutes to an hour.&nbsp;Every other experimental hormonal or non-hormonal male contraceptive takes weeks to bring sperm count down or render them unable to fertilise eggs.”&nbsp;

As per the doctor, the males started recovering their fertility after three hours. “Sperm recovered from female mice remained incapacitated. There were no side effects,” she added. The doctor said that sperm began to swim after three hours and the mice totally recovered the next day. “This means we not only have an on-demand contraceptive but one that is also rapidly reversible,” she added.&nbsp;

The drugs will be refined by the researchers so that they can last for longer durations before starting human trials. If things go as planned, the clinical trials of these drugs are likely to begin by 2025. The drug carries a high chance of developing into an easy-to-use contraceptive. Men will be free to take these when they want as the pills won't have any side effects. Although the pill may be able to control unwanted pregnancies, it won't protect people from sexually transmitted diseases. A condom will be able to keep people safe from such diseases.

Scientists hail the 'novel idea'&nbsp;

University of Sheffield's Professor of Andrology Allan Pacey, speaking to the BBC, said that there has been a growing need for men's oral contraceptives and added that it was “really a novel idea” to knock out the enzyme which is important for the movement of the sperm.

“The fact that it is able to act, and can be reversed&nbsp;so quickly is really quite exciting… If the trials on mice can be replicated in humans with the same degree of efficacy, then this could well be the male contraceptive approach we have been looking for,” he said. Pacey added that few tests were conducted on human sperm in the laboratory and they worked in a similar way.

‘We’re very optimistic that once men take the inhibitor, it will have the same effect… We need more [birth control] options, and men need an option so that the burden of contraception is not on females anymore,” Balbach said.&nbsp;

Presently, condoms and vasectomy are the options available for male birth control. However, this research has emerged as a beam of light in the dark tunnel, reflecting a more gender-balanced future.&nbsp;

The study's lead author Dr Melanie Balbach said, “Our inhibitor works within 30 minutes to an hour. Every other experimental hormonal or non-hormonal male contraceptive takes weeks to bring sperm count down or render them unable to fertilise eggs.” As per the doctor, the males started recovering their fertility after three hours. “Sperm recovered from female mice remained incapacitated. There were no side effects,” she added. The doctor said that sperm began to swim after three hours and the mice totally recovered the next day. “This means we not only have an on-demand contraceptive but one that is also rapidly reversible,” she added. If things go as planned, the clinical trials of these drugs are likely to begin by 2025. The drug carries a high chance of developing into an easy-to-use contraceptive. Although the pill may be able to control unwanted pregnancies, it won't protect people from sexually transmitted diseases. A condom will be able to keep people safe from such diseases. Scientists hail the 'novel idea' University of Sheffield's Professor of Andrology Allan Pacey, speaking to the BBC, said that there has been a growing need for men's oral contraceptives and added that it was “really a novel idea” to knock out the enzyme which is important for the movement of the sperm. “The fact that it is able to act, and can be reversed so quickly is really quite exciting… If the trials on mice can be replicated in humans with the same degree of efficacy, then this could well be the male contraceptive approach we have been looking for,” he said. The birth of twins of the mother, Ryan and Raelynn, took place on September 5 2021. The twins weighed 5lbs 10oz and 5lbs 1oz, and were kept at Umass memorial medical centre in &nbsp;Massachusetts for 27 days, before the twins were sent home.&nbsp;

Speaking about her pregnancy, Karen said, "I was more worried about the fact I was having two babies than having a heart-shaped uterus. I just wanted to make sure they were OK. I didn't believe I had a heart-shaped uterus at first so I went back for another scan to make sure it was true."

"I was monitored closely because it was a high-risk pregnancy. It was really emotional seeing them for the first time because they were tiny. I was so happy but scared to have two tiny babies. We were so excited when we got them home," she added.&nbsp;

Karen along with her husband, Shaunan, &nbsp;were very happy when they heard the pregnancy news in January 2021.

However, the couple were worried when they found out about the heart-shaped uterus.&nbsp;

Karen said, "It's very rare to have a heart-shaped uterus and fall pregnant with twins. I remember being confused at the scan. I just kept asking: 'Are they OK?'"

The mother decided to go for another scan to confirm reports of the first sonography. "They said my pregnancy was very high risk because I had a heart-shaped uterus and was expecting twins," she stated.

A UK couple, who was fighting cancer and going through chemotherapy in the pregnancy days, gave birth to a ‘miracle baby’. The doctors had diagnosed James Jefferson-Loveday with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 2021, months before his wife Bethany was found suffering from cancer, when she was 21 weeks pregnant.

It was the husband’s cancer diagnosis which made the couple try for a baby. After receiving the treatment, the couple gave birth to a healthy baby Heidi, who is being called a “miracle baby”.

Dr Salim Shafeek, from whom the couple received treatment, said, “The combination of being pregnant and having high-grade Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is exceptionally rare, and Bethany is the first case of this I've treated in my 25 years as a Consultant Haematologist."

"I will never forget the moment I was given my diagnosis. I remember questioning how this was possible as my husband was undergoing treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma at the time,” said Bethany.

The hospital trust said that she discussed all treatment options with Worcestershire Royal Hospital’s consultant obstetrician before going through six cycles of chemotherapy. Dr Shafeek stated that they were not able to delay the process of chemotherapy or use stronger treatment which had to end in 35 weeks so that she is given enough time to recover from childbirth.
