Over the years, people have given different spins to their gender reveal parties but none might come close as Meirivone Rocha Moraes' recent party. The Brazilian woman who made headlines for marrying a rag doll in 2021 has now thrown a gender reveal party for her second rag-doll child, weeks after attending an ultrasound.

Surrounded by around 40 guests, Moraes, her 'husband' Marcelo and her 'first child' Marcelinho attended the party with pink and blue decorations around.

In the now-viral video posted on social media, Moraes can be seen holding a sparkler spouting pink smoke, suggesting the 'rag-doll baby' was going to be a female.

While Moraes started jumping in joy, her family members and friends started clapping and celebrating.

Marcelinho, perhaps jealous of an incoming sibling, could be seen sitting on the lap of a guest.

“I wanted it to be a boy because I’ve heard having a girl is very expensive and much more work. But the baby will still be welcomed and very loved by me and her dad," said Moraes.

Earlier this month, Moraes provided a pregnancy update after attending an ultrasound, revealing the baby’s expected arrival in December, according to DailyMail.

Moraes' life: A soap opera

Moraes was introduced to 'Marcelo' by her mother, who had created it after getting to know that the woman did not have a dance partner. Soon, they both fell in love and got married.

Moraes said Marcelo was the man she always wanted as the doll doesn’t argue or fight and always understands her.

“Marcelo is a great and faithful husband. He is such a man that all women envy him,” she said.

Notably, the first child Marcelinho was 'born' in the same year. At the time, Moraes revealed that it was a home birth and that a doctor and nurse had been involved to facilitate the 'birthing process'.

While happiness has arrived in Moraes' family, it hasn't come without its share of problems.

Earlier this year, Moraes had accused Marcelo of cheating, leading to 'devastating' consequences. The matriarch of the family relegated Marcelo to the couch and he was barred from entering the couples bedroom.

Brazilian woman 'married' to homemade rag doll throws gender reveal party for second rag doll child

The Indian Supreme Court has turned down the plea of a 26-week pregnant woman for abortion on the grounds that she is suffering from a mental condition called post-partum psychosis.

The apex court also admitted the central government’s submission that it is willing to undertake the expenses of delivery and if parents desire, facilitate the child's adoption.

In the petition, the woman, who already has two children, said that she was suffering from post-partum psychosis and was not in a position to raise a third child, emotionally, financially, and physically.

The bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud reached the decision based on a report by the AIIMS medical board that the pregnancy is not an immediate danger to the life of the woman and that the foetus is healthy.

Violates law

The court denied permission to terminate the pregnancy since its duration had crossed the 24-week mark and added that letting the married woman to continue with her decision would violate Sections 3 and 5 of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act.

Abortion is allowed under the MTP Act if the pregnancy doesn’t cross 24 weeks mark for married women, for special categories including survivors of rape, and other vulnerable women, such as the differently-abled and minors.

"This court is averse to passing such a direction. The petitioner also doesn't wish to do the same," the court said, reported LiveLaw outlet.

The top court also brushed aside an intervention during the proceeding that sought to challenge the upper limit for medical termination.

The court stated that the challenge to the existing law would be addressed through separate proceedings, while the ongoing petition shall remain a matter exclusively between the petitioner and the state.

‘24-week guideline obsolete’

Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, who was arguing on behalf of the petitioner, cited a report of the World Health Organisation (WHO) which had already termed the 24-week guideline ‘obsolete’.

A recent Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) survey released on Tuesday has revealed distressing findings regarding care during pregnancy. One in five women in the United States has reported that she encountered mistreatment, including scoldings, during pregnancy and delivery care at the hands of the nation's health professionals.

Racial angle to the mistreatment

The CDC study found that this mistreatment was more prevalent among Black, Hispanic, and multiracial women, as well as those without private insurance coverage.

In a statement, Dr Debra Houry, the CDC's Chief Medical Officer, said that "These data show that we must do better to support moms."

The CDC's Vital Signs report mentions the various forms of mistreatment. These include instances of women being scolded or shouted at, them not receiving a response to requests for help, and not having their physical privacy protected.

Additionally, many reported that they were on the receiving end of threats to withhold treatments or were pressured into accepting unwanted treatment.

Survey data shows that around 30 per cent of Black women, 29 per cent of Hispanic women, and 27 per cent of multiracial women reported mistreatment during their maternity care experiences.

What would improving pregnancy care do?

As per the survey that was conducted in April, enhancing the quality of maternity care could play a crucial role in preventing pregnancy-related deaths.

Furthermore, it highlighted how prevalent discrimination was among pregnant women. It noted that "the most common reasons for reported discrimination were age, weight, and income and varied by race/ethnicity."

The survey also found that in general, women tend to hold back from asking questions or concerns to healthcare providers during their maternity care. This hesitation was often due to embarrassment about discussing certain topics, fears that they would be perceived as difficult, or because the providers were rushed.

Furthermore, the type of insurance coverage held by women also played a part in their pregnancy healthcare experiences.

Pregnant women without insurance — which account for 28 per cent of those surveyed, or those with public insurance (26 per cent) reported higher rates of mistreatment compared to women with private insurance coverage (16 per cent).

Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra stressed that "every mother deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Maternal care is a core component of this nation's health care." He also said, "Bias, stigma, and mistreatment have no place in our healthcare system."

CDC survey finds disturbing mistreatment of pregnant women by health professionals

Virgin births may appear unrealistic and biblical, however, researchers have claimed to have discovered a way to induce female fruit flies to produce offspring even if there are no males around.

Scientists said that the genes which enable one species of fruit fly to reproduce without sperms fertilising their eggs have been identified by them. The researchers then genetically tweaked another species which normally reproduces sexually to do the same thing.

“We’re the first to show that you can engineer virgin births to happen in an animal – it was very exciting to see a virgin fly produce an embryo able to develop to adulthood, and then repeat the process,” stated Dr Alexis Sperling, first author of the paper outlining the study and a researcher at the University of Cambridge, while speaking to The Guardian.

The study which has been published in the journal Current Biology was conducted in six years and made use of 220,000 flies. The researchers first observed one species of fruit fly called Drosophila mercatorum, and understood its ability to reproduce through virgin births, which can also be called parthenogenesis.

Through sequencing the genome of the fly and identifying the gene which is involved in virgin birth, the researchers could identify the corresponding gene in fruit fly's another species called Drosophila melanogaster and alter that gene to turn it on.

Virgin births to work as reproductive backup

The offspring of produced from such genetically modified flies could reproduce either by mating with males or through virgin births. Sperling said taking the path of virgin birth can be hugely beneficial for the species and may work as a reproductive backup for isolated females.

“If there’s continued selection pressure for virgin births in insect pests, which there seems to be, it will eventually lead to them reproducing only in this way. It could become a real problem for agriculture because females produce only females, so their ability to spread doubles,” she added.

Process not likely to work for mammals

Sperling stated that although recent research has discovered a way to “switch on” virgin births in fruit flies, it is unlikely that this approach will work in mammals, even though parthenogenesis has been observed in animals such as lizards and honey bees.

“Mammals are very separate and it is not a natural occurring phenomenon,” said Sperling. However, she said that the research helped to “understand the beauty of life itself” and “this different type of reproduction”.

Dr Hannah Maude at Imperial College London, speaking to The Guardian, said, “Our diversity protects us: having two copies of the DNA not only provides a backup for harmful DNA variants – found in every person – but is necessary for so-called imprinted regions that are specifically active from the maternal or paternal DNA copy,”

“Nevertheless, this exciting research furthers our understanding of reproduction in the animal kingdom,” she added.

Scientists make 'virgin births' without males possible for fruit flies

Scientists have made significant progress in identifying the cause of severe morning sickness in pregnant women.

The cause has been pinpointed at a hormone called GDF15, short for Growth/Differentiation Factor 15.

Nearly two-thirds of pregnant women reportedly experience varying degrees of nausea or vomiting, known as morning sickness, throughout the day.

Severe forms of morning sickness pose risks such as weight loss and dehydration, endangering both the mother and the unborn child.

GDF15 and morning sickness: Evidence from research

GDF15 hormone was initially discovered in the late 1990s. In 2017, it was found to be inducing nausea and vomiting under certain stress-related conditions within the body.

Earlier research conducted by Cambridge University confirmed higher levels of GDF15 in women suffering from morning sickness.

Similarly, a team from the University of Southern California discovered that certain gene variants associated with GDF15 could heighten the likelihood of a severe form of morning sickness.

The combined efforts of researchers involved in these studies have yielded further insights.

They have observed significantly elevated levels of GDF15 in pregnant women experiencing severe morning sickness, compared to those with milder symptoms.

Additionally, their study, which is pending peer review, revealed that women with higher levels of GDF15 in their bloodstream prior to conception were less prone to severe sickness after becoming pregnant.

What does it mean?

The study highlighted the possibility of reducing the risk of severe forms of morning sickness during pregnancy by increasing GDF15 levels in women before conception.

"Strategies which safely increase circulating GDF15 levels prior to pregnancy may be useful in the prevention of these conditions," the study noted.

Some companies are already developing treatments to lower GDF15 levels for other ailments that cause nausea and vomiting.

Scientists find cause of 'morning sickness' in pregnant women

Motherhood is the most magical experience ever. Holding those little hands between your fingers changes everything. The pain of giving birth vanishes as soon as we see our little munchkins. However, for cancer survivors, this experience is even more life-changing and emotional. They have to consider several factors before planning a pregnancy and they need to constantly stay in touch with medical experts to have a safe delivery. To understand this process better, we spoke to two doctors who have helped several cancer survivors get pregnant and have a safe delivery.

In an exclusive conversation with WION, Dr Seema Thareja, MBBS, MD (Consultant Obstetrics & Gynecology) at Apollo Cradle & Children's Hospital Moti Nagar New Delhi, shared, "Planning a pregnancy is an exciting and joyful time for many couples. However, for female cancer survivors, the journey to parenthood may require additional considerations. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery might affect a woman's fertility and general health."

Dr Seema added, "Cancer survivors should approach pregnancy planning with careful consideration and be open to communicating with their doctor. Always keep in mind that everyone's situation is unique, and personalised advice from healthcare experts is crucial for successfully navigating the complexities of cancer and pregnancy."

WION also spoke to Dr Jagatjeet Singh, Founder of Baby Joy IVF, and according to the medical expert, planning for pregnancy while "undergoing or after cancer treatment requires careful consideration and collaboration between the patient, their oncologist, and reproductive specialists".

Dr Jagatjeet said, "Timing is essential, as patients are required to wait until they have completed their treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, to ensure sufficient recovery time and reduce risks to both mother and baby. Fertility preservation options should be explored before starting treatment, as certain cancer treatments can have adverse effects on fertility."

"Discussing options like egg or embryo freezing with oncologists and reproductive specialists can provide future possibilities for pregnancy. Each patient's situation is unique, so individualised medical advice is crucial. Consulting with a team of healthcare professionals, including oncologists, reproductive specialists, and genetic counsellors, helps understand the potential risks and challenges associated with pregnancy after cancer treatment. Close monitoring and follow-up care during pregnancy are vital for cancer survivors, and it is important to have a healthcare team experienced in managing high-risk pregnancies," Dr Jagatjeet added.

Seeking emotional and psychological support is also essential, as planning pregnancy after cancer treatment can bring about a range of emotions and challenges. Mental health professionals, support groups, and loved ones can provide the necessary support during this journey, according to the medical expert.

"Prioritising overall health and well-being, along with open communication with healthcare professionals, will help navigate the complexities and ensure the best possible outcome for both the patient and their future child," Dr Jagatjeet concluded.

Here are some crucial factors that cancer survivors must consider when planning to conceive:

Consult a doctor: It is crucial for cancer survivors to consult their doctors before attempting or planning a pregnancy. You must take an appointment with an oncologist, fertility specialist, and obstetrician. They can provide personalised advice based on the individual's cancer history, treatment received, and overall health. These professionals can guide cancer survivors on the potential risks, fertility preservation options, and optimal timing for conception.

Understanding pregnancy risks: Cancer survivors may face unique risks during pregnancy due to their cancer history and treatments received. These risks can vary depending on factors such as the type of cancer, stage at diagnosis, and time since treatment completion. It's essential for survivors to be aware of these potential risks and discuss them with their doctors.

Monitoring for cancer recurrence: Cancer survivors should continue to receive regular follow-up care and monitoring for potential cancer recurrence during pregnancy. This may involve additional tests and screenings to ensure both the mother's and baby's well-being. Close communication between the oncologist and obstetrician is essential to manage any potential complications that may arise.

Emotional and psychological support: Planning a pregnancy as a cancer survivor can bring up a range of emotions, including anxiety and fear. It's important for survivors to seek emotional and psychological support during this time. Support groups, counselling, and connecting with other cancer survivors who have had successful pregnancies can be helpful in navigating the emotional challenges.

Lifestyle modifications: Adopting a healthy lifestyle is important for any pregnancy, but it becomes even more crucial for cancer survivors. This includes maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and managing stress. Survivors may also need to discuss any medications they are taking with their respective doctors to ensure they are safe during pregnancy.

Preconception genetic counselling: Some cancer survivors may have a hereditary predisposition to certain types of cancer. Preconception genetic counselling can help identify any potential genetic risks that could impact the pregnancy or the baby's health. This allows survivors to make informed decisions regarding prenatal testing and potential interventions.

Motherhood is the most magical experience ever. Holding those little hands between your fingers changes everything. The pain of giving birth vanishes as soon as we see our little munchkins.

Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery might affect a woman's fertility and general health." Dr Seema added, "Cancer survivors should approach pregnancy planning with careful consideration and be open to communicating with their doctor. Always keep in mind that everyone's situation is unique, and personalised advice from healthcare experts is crucial for successfully navigating the complexities of cancer and pregnancy." Explained: Pregnancy after cancer: Things to keep in mind, medical advice and more

South Carolina's state senate approved an anti-abortion bill that would ban most abortions at about six weeks, a period when most people are unaware they are pregnant.

A "super-fertile" mother in the UK conceived her second child just four weeks after her first, and she didn't realise it until the babies were born. Sophie Small, 30, gave birth to daughters Holly and Darcy in August 2020, mistaking the girls for twins at first.

Midwives were puzzled by the twins' disparities in size, with Darcy weighing 4 pounds, 2 ounces and Holly, who was delivered second, weighing a significantly heftier 6 pounds, 1 ounce, reported the New York Post.

Doctors then discovered that the daughters were conceived a month apart owing to superfetation, a condition in which a second pregnancy develops soon after the first.

Small told Kennedy News that her pregnancy was "horrific."

She had severe morning sickness and was hospitalised eight times in seven weeks.

“I was carrying two babies who were growing at different stages, but we didn’t know that,” the mom stated.

“They couldn’t work out why I was so sick. I was expecting twins but one was bigger than the other,” she added.

“They had their own sacs and placentas, so they could feed when they wanted to. But they [doctors] couldn’t work out why one twin was bigger than the other,” she further explained.

Only after the girls were delivered at such disparities in size did doctors conduct testing and find that the kids were not twins at all.

“Darcy was a 32-week baby and Holly was a 36-week baby,” Small said.

The swimming instructor, who is also a mother to Oscar, says sceptics simply don't believe her when she tells them the unbelievable story.

“People think I’m a nutter [crazy] when I explain,” she declared.

“They ask how many minutes apart they are, and I say, ‘Darcy is two minutes older and four weeks younger, while Holly was born two minutes after but is four weeks older.’ “

Small claims she knew she was "very fertile" since Oscar was conceived so quickly, and she believes she ovulated again when she was already pregnant with Holly.

What is superfetation?

Superfetation is the term used to describe the simultaneous occurrence of two pregnancies. Days or weeks after the first ovum (egg) is implanted in the womb, a second ovum is fertilised by sperm. Given that they may be delivered on the same day and during the same labour, babies born through superfetation are frequently thought of as twins, according to Healthline.

'Super fertile' woman gets pregnant twice in 28 days, delivers both babies on same day

The Delhi High Court on Friday (April 28) allowed a minor Nepalese girl who had been the victim of gang rape to have her pregnancy medically terminated at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital since it had lasted longer than the legal limit of 24 weeks.

“Accordingly in view of the fact that the child is a rape victim and taking a humanitarian view of the matter though the child and her family are Nepalese citizens, this court directs that the medical termination of pregnancy be effected as soon as possible by the doctors of the LNJP hospital,” said a single judge bench of Justice Prathiba Singh after interacting with the medical board at the hospital and the mother of the victim, as reported by The Indian Express.

The High Court (HC) further ordered the LNJP hospital's medical staff to make sure the girl receives the best treatment possible as well as post-operative care so she can recuperate and only then be discharged.

According to the HC, the current order is being issued given the specific facts and circumstances of the case.

“The family has assured that in case the foetus is born alive considering the age of the foetus, the family would give adequate care in the nursery of LNJP,” the court recorded.

Anuj Kapoor, an attorney representing the survivor's mother, stated that if a situation like that occurred, "we will revive the writ petition and will seek appropriate directions." The judge, however, stated that while they have permission to file the application, they must care for the infant in the interim period.

The medical board's opinion is that a pregnancy can be terminated, but there are some risks due to the girl's low haemoglobin and the baby's gestational age of 27 weeks. This information was provided to the court by two doctors from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Neonatology, LNJP, who had joined the hearing virtually.

The mother received counselling about the risks from both doctors, who testified before the court. They are aware of the risks involved, Kapoor further stated.

The petitioner's claim was that in October 2022, a brutal case of gang rape occurred on her daughter in Nepal. According to information provided to the court, the petitioner and her entire family are citizens of Nepal, and the girl's parents both had jobs in India.

The girl moved in with her parents in India in March of this year, according to Kapoor's earlier argument, which claimed that's when she discovered she was pregnant.

According to information previously provided to the court, she was already 25 weeks pregnant when she approached the relevant authority or the doctors to request an abortion. The mother then went to the HC to ask for permission to end her daughter's pregnancy because it had lasted longer than the legal limit of 24 weeks. On April 21, the HC gave LNJP the go-ahead to form a medical board that would examine the minor girl and provide an opinion.

More than 150 million women worldwide use oral contraceptives to avoid unwanted pregnancies. However, a bombshell study released by researchers at the University of Oxford has now laid bare the risks involved. The study has reportedly established the link between the usage of progestogen and the increased risk of breast cancer.

Most contraceptive pills contain oestrogen and progestogen, which are now blamed for increasing the risk of breast cancer by 20-30 per cent among users. The risk was particularly higher among older women than those in their teens and 20s.

The study is published in PLOS Medicine based on data from 9,498 women who developed breast cancer in the age group between 20s and 40s. After five years of usage of oral contraceptives, almost 8 in every 100,000 women were found to have developed breast cancer in the age group 16 to 20. On the other hand, 265 in every 100,000 women from the age group 35 to 39 were found to have developed breast cancer.

However, researchers are of the view that the drawbacks of using oral contraceptives must be rationally weighed against the proven benefits. Claire Knight of Cancer Research UK made it clear that the findings of the new study must not discourage women from using oral contraceptives as they were one of the most effective ways to avoid pregnancy.

Claire said, “There are lots of possible benefits to using contraception, as well as other risks not related to cancer. That’s why deciding to take them is a personal choice and should be done after speaking to your doctor so you can make a decision that is right for you.”

A combined pill contains two hormones: oestrogen and progestogen. The hormones are highly effective at stopping ovaries from releasing eggs. On the other hand, the progestogen-only pill thickens the cervical mucus, which prevents the sperm from entering the womb. Both types of pills are 99.7 per cent effective against pregnancy.

Using oral contraceptives leads to higher risk of breast cancer among older women, reveals study

Around 40 per cent of pregnancies in the US are unplanned. This is partially due to social diktats that hold women unfairly responsible for family planning and pregnancy prevention. The contraception options for men have been historically limited — condoms (not 100 per cent reliable), vasectomy (potentially permanent and men are scared to choose this), the withdrawal method (ineffective) and abstinence (not feasible).

To avoid unintended pregnancies and control the world population, there has been a growing need for more family planning methods which are not solely dependent on women. In this direction, Nature Communications recently published a path-breaking study which talked about a drug which was able to immobilise the sperm quickly and temporarily in male mice. The discovery was called a “game-changer” and could pave the path for the much-awaited male contraceptive pill and finally can let men share equal responsibility with women on the issue of birth control.

The journey so far – Condoms, Conventional vasectomy, No-scalpel vasectomy

Among the most commonly used options for birth control are condoms. Although condoms generally stop the fertilisation of eggs by restricting the semen from entering the vaginal canal, it carries the risk of ripping, or slipping off if not worn correctly. The condoms also carry an expiration date and can get damaged by light and heat. During use, a dried-out, old condom is more likely to tear, while those using latex condoms also face the risk of latex allergy.

Conventional vasectomy, which is also called male sterilisation, is a surgical procedure for permanent birth control. A vasectomy starts providing contraceptive protection around 8 to 12 weeks after the procedure. It is permanent, and cannot always be reversed. Couples planning a baby at a later stage of life cannot get the vasectomy reversed.

The 'pill' discovery

On February 14, the journal Nature Communications published an early study which found that the sperms of mice were immobilised before, during and after mating by a single dose of the drug TDI-11861. For around two hours, the contraceptive proved 100 per cent effective in the prevention of pregnancy. After 24 hours, the mice regained their full fertility.

As per a report published in New Scientist, “The team assessed the movement of sperm collected from 17 male mice, eight of whom received the drug. In samples collected two hours after mice received the drug, only about six per cent of sperm were mobile on an average compared with about 30 per cent in samples from control mice."

The study's lead author Dr Melanie Balbach said, “Our inhibitor works within 30 minutes to an hour. Every other experimental hormonal or non-hormonal male contraceptive takes weeks to bring sperm count down or render them unable to fertilise eggs.”

As per the doctor, the males started recovering their fertility after three hours. “Sperm recovered from female mice remained incapacitated. There were no side effects,” she added. The doctor said that sperm began to swim after three hours and the mice totally recovered the next day. “This means we not only have an on-demand contraceptive but one that is also rapidly reversible,” she added.

The steps ahead

The drugs will be refined by the researchers so that they can last for longer durations before starting human trials. If things go as planned, the clinical trials of these drugs are likely to begin by 2025. The drug carries a high chance of developing into an easy-to-use contraceptive. Men will be free to take these when they want as the pills won't have any side effects. Although the pill may be able to control unwanted pregnancies, it won't protect people from sexually transmitted diseases. A condom will be able to keep people safe from such diseases.

Scientists hail the 'novel idea'

University of Sheffield's Professor of Andrology Allan Pacey, speaking to the BBC, said that there has been a growing need for men's oral contraceptives and added that it was “really a novel idea” to knock out the enzyme which is important for the movement of the sperm.

“The fact that it is able to act, and can be reversed so quickly is really quite exciting… If the trials on mice can be replicated in humans with the same degree of efficacy, then this could well be the male contraceptive approach we have been looking for,” he said. ALSO READ | Researchers develop 'male pill', an oral contraceptive that successfully stops sperm in its track The journey so far – Condoms, Conventional vasectomy, No-scalpel vasectomy Among the most commonly used options for birth control are condoms. The 'pill' discovery On February 14, the journal Nature Communications published an early study which found that the sperms of mice were immobilised before, during and after mating by a single dose of the drug TDI-11861. For around two hours, the contraceptive proved 100 per cent effective in the prevention of pregnancy. After 24 hours, the mice regained their full fertility. As per a report published in New Scientist, “The team assessed the movement of sperm collected from 17 male mice, eight of whom received the drug. In samples collected two hours after mice received the drug, only about six per cent of sperm were mobile on an average compared with about 30 per cent in samples from control mice." The study's lead author Dr Melanie Balbach said, “Our inhibitor works within 30 minutes to an hour. Every other experimental hormonal or non-hormonal male contraceptive takes weeks to bring sperm count down or render them unable to fertilise eggs.” As per the doctor, the males started recovering their fertility after three hours. “Sperm recovered from female mice remained incapacitated. There were no side effects,” she added. The doctor said that sperm began to swim after three hours and the mice totally recovered the next day. “This means we not only have an on-demand contraceptive but one that is also rapidly reversible,” she added. WATCH | China trains six squirrels to search for drugs The steps ahead The drugs will be refined by the researchers so that they can last for longer durations before starting human trials. Scientists hail the 'novel idea' University of Sheffield's Professor of Andrology Allan Pacey, speaking to the BBC, said that there has been a growing need for men's oral contraceptives and added that it was “really a novel idea” to knock out the enzyme which is important for the movement of the sperm. “The fact that it is able to act, and can be reversed so quickly is really quite exciting… If the trials on mice can be replicated in humans with the same degree of efficacy, then this could well be the male contraceptive approach we have been looking for,” he said. Pacey added that few tests were conducted on human sperm in the laboratory and they worked in a similar way. ‘We’re very optimistic that once men take the inhibitor, it will have the same effect… We need more [birth control] options, and men need an option so that the burden of contraception is not on females anymore,” Balbach said. Explained | The quest for male birth control: from vasectomy to condoms to ‘the pill’

Those exposed to wildfire smoke for at least one day have a higher chance of giving birth prematurely, according to a study of more than 2.5 million women who are pregnant in California. The results, which are still undergoing peer review, were presented on Saturday at the annual conference of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and would be published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

To assess the daily amounts of wildfire smoke in the participants' ZIP codes during their pregnancies, the researchers first collected data from hospital records of pregnant women from 2007 to 2012.

The results suggested that just one day of exposure to smoke moderately raised the risk of spontaneous preterm birth — medically defined as before the 37th week of pregnancy.

"Most pregnant persons are having well over one day of exposure, and the chronicity of this exposure, which continues to increase, is really the worrisome relationship with wildfire smoke," said Dr Anne Waldrop, the study’s lead author and a maternal-fetal medicine fellow at Stanford University told NBC news.

During their first or second trimesters, or the four weeks preceding conception, 86 per cent of the pregnant women tested in California, according to Waldrop's research, had been exposed to fine particulate matter from wildfire smoke. Over the course of that period, the research subjects were exposed to smoke on average for more than seven days.

Only preterm births occurring within the first 20 weeks of pregnancy were linked to exposure; preconception exposure was not.

Another study discovered that air pollution likely caused roughly six million preterm births globally in 2019. According to Rakesh Ghosh, an epidemiologist at the University of California, San Francisco, and the author of that paper, who spoke to NBC news, inhaling smoke from wildfires during the first trimester may cause the amniotic sac to rupture early as a result of inflammation.

Wildfire smoke exposure in pregnancy may increase risk of preterm birth: Study

A woman from California has disclosed that she conceived two daughters within a span of five days. After an unfortunate miscarriage, the couple, Odalis and Antonio Martinez, from San Pablo, California, were overjoyed to find that they were expecting a baby girl in November 2020. However, to further amplify their delight, the 25-year-old learned at her initial scan that they were expecting not one, but two girls who were conceived within the same week and five days apart.

As per The Daily Mail, the unusual occurrence is known as "superfetation," and it happens when a first pregnancy is followed by a subsequent one. Days or weeks after the first pregnancy, superfetation may take place, leading to another pregnancy.

What is superfetation?

Superfetation is the term used to describe the simultaneous occurrence of two pregnancies. Days or weeks after the first ovum (egg) is implanted in the womb, a second ovum (egg) is fertilised by sperm. Given that they may be delivered on the same day and during the same labour, babies born through superfetation are frequently thought of as twins, according to Healthline.

The mother who spoke to The Daily Mail UK, said, “They’re technically not even identical but everyone thinks that they are. They definitely look a lot alike. Sometimes me and my husband, well more my husband, get them mixed up with each other.”

A UK couple, who was fighting cancer and going through chemotherapy in the pregnancy days, gave birth to a ‘miracle baby’. The doctors had diagnosed James Jefferson-Loveday with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 2021, months before his wife Bethany was found suffering from cancer, when she was 21 weeks pregnant.

It was the husband’s cancer diagnosis which made the couple try for a baby. After receiving the treatment, the couple gave birth to a healthy baby Heidi, who is being called a “miracle baby”.

Dr Salim Shafeek, from whom the couple received treatment, said, “The combination of being pregnant and having high-grade Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is exceptionally rare, and Bethany is the first case of this I've treated in my 25 years as a Consultant Haematologist."

"I will never forget the moment I was given my diagnosis. I remember questioning how this was possible as my husband was undergoing treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma at the time,” said Bethany.

The hospital trust said that she discussed all treatment options with Worcestershire Royal Hospital’s consultant obstetrician before going through six cycles of chemotherapy. Dr Shafeek stated that they were not able to delay the process of chemotherapy or use stronger treatment which had to end in 35 weeks so that she is given enough time to recover from childbirth.

Actress Jennifer Aniston has opened up about her struggle with getting pregnant and IVF treatment for the first time in a candid interview.

For years, rumours suggested that Aniston and Brad Pitt divorced as she chose career over starting a family with the actor. While speaking to Allure magazine recently, Aniston rubbished the reports and stated she did try to get pregnant and that it was a 'challenging road for me, the baby-making road.'

"All the years and years and years of speculation… It was really hard," she noted. "I was going through IVF, drinking Chinese teas, you name it. I was throwing everything at it. I would have given anything if someone had said to me, 'Freeze your eggs. Do yourself a favor.' You just don't think it."

Aniston said the assumptions around the cause of her divorce from Pitt in 2005 were hurtful.

"It was absolute lies," said Aniston about the "narrative that I was just selfish... I just cared about my career. And God forbid a woman is successful and doesn't have a child. And the reason my husband left me, why we broke up and ended our marriage, was because I wouldn't give him a kid."

Aniston did not mention the specific years when she tried for IVF and instead just mentioned that she underwent treatment "several years ago." The 'Friends' star said that at 53 she had no regrets on how things worked out in her life.

"Here I am today. The ship has sailed," she said, adding, "I actually feel a little relief now because there is no more, 'Can I?' I don't have to think about that anymore."

"I would say my late 30s, 40s, I'd gone through really hard s***, and if it wasn't for going through that, I would've never become who I was meant to be," said Aniston. "That's why I have such gratitude for all those s***y things. Otherwise, I would've been stuck being this person that was so fearful, so nervous, so unsure of who they were. And now, I don't f***ing care."

Aniston said she felt "best in who I am today, better than I ever did in my 20s or 30s even, or my mid-40s."

A few years back, Aniston had mentioned in an op-ed how gossip around her personal life had impacted her.
"Here's where I come out on this topic: We are complete with or without a mate, with or without a child. We get to decide for ourselves what is beautiful when it comes to our bodies. That decision is ours and ours alone," she wrote. "Let's make that decision for ourselves and for the young women in this world who look to us as examples. Let's make that decision consciously, outside of the tabloid noise. We don't need to be married or mothers to be complete. We get to determine our own 'happily ever after' for ourselves."

Added Aniston at the time, "I have grown tired of being part of this narrative. Yes, I may become a mother some day, and since I'm laying it all out there, if I ever do, I will be the first to let you know. But I'm not in pursuit of motherhood because I feel incomplete in some way."

Actress Jennifer Aniston has opened up about her struggle with getting pregnant and IVF treatment for the first time in a candid interview. For years, rumours suggested that Aniston and Brad Pitt divorced as she chose career over starting a family with the actor. While speaking to Allure magazine recently, Aniston rubbished the reports and stated she did try to get pregnant and that it was a 'challenging road for me, the baby-making road.' "All the years and years and years of speculation… It was really hard," she noted. "I was going through IVF, drinking Chinese teas, you name it. I was throwing everything at it. I would have given anything if someone had said to me, 'Freeze your eggs. Do yourself a favor.' You just don't think it." Aniston said the assumptions around the cause of her divorce from Pitt in 2005 were hurtful. "It was absolute lies," said Aniston about the "narrative that I was just selfish... I just cared about my career. And God forbid a woman is successful and doesn't have a child. And the reason my husband left me, why we broke up and ended our marriage, was because I wouldn't give him a kid." Aniston did not mention the specific years when she tried for IVF and instead just mentioned that she underwent treatment "several years ago." The 'Friends' star said that at 53 she had no regrets on how things worked out in her life. "Here I am today. The ship has sailed," she said, adding, "I actually feel a little relief now because there is no more, 'Can I?' I don't have to think about that anymore." "I would say my late 30s, 40s, I'd gone through really hard s***, and if it wasn't for going through that, I would've never become who I was meant to be," said Aniston. "That's why I have such gratitude for all those s***y things. Otherwise, I would've been stuck being this person that was so fearful, so nervous, so unsure of who they were. And now, I don't f***ing care." Aniston said she felt "best in who I am today, better than I ever did in my 20s or 30s even, or my mid-40s." COVID-19 was responsible for a sharp rise in the number of women who died in the United States last year due to pregnancy-related or childbirth-related issues, according to a government report released Wednesday.

For expectant moms and their newborn children, the research outlines depressing national patterns.

According to the study, there have been an increase in pregnancy-related mortality of almost 80% since 2018, with COVID-19 being a contributing factor in 25% of the 1,178 deaths reported in 2018. In addition, following years of stability, the proportion of preterm and low birthweight infants increased in 2017. Additionally, more pregnant and postpartum women are describing depressive symptoms.

“We were already in the middle of a crisis with maternal mortality in our country,” said Karen Tabb Dina, a maternal health researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “This really shows that COVID-19 has exacerbated that crisis to rates that we, as a country, are not able to handle.”

After Congress requested that it assess maternal health outcomes in the 2020 coronavirus relief bill, the nonpartisan US Government Accountability Office, which produced the report, examined pregnancy-related mortality.

In spite of the fact that the United States has a higher maternal mortality rate than many other affluent countries and that it had been rising in the years prior to the pandemic, COVID-19 has merely made things more difficult for expectant mothers in this country.

High health hazards are associated with the virus infected pregnant women. In addition to COVID-19 restrictions and staffing shortages, pandemic stress has made depression, a common symptom during pregnancy, worse. Expectant moms now face even more obstacles in their quest for in-person medical care.

According to that report, hospitals in rural, low-income, and predominately Black regions have been cutting back on their obstetric services.

There were more than half of rural counties without a hospital that provided maternity care as of 2018, According to the analysis.

US: COVID-19 linked to increase in pregnancy-related deaths, study reveals

Singapore Airlines has finally ended its controversial rule of firing pregnant cabin crew after it faced a lot of criticism over the years. Following a report by Strait Times, the company clarified that the cabin crew “may choose to work in a temporary ground attachment” during their pregnancy.

Earlier, the company rules stated that any flight crew, who informed the authorities about their pregnancy, was put on leave without any pay and was forced to quit after the birth of the child.

According to the report, the women were not even allowed to do the groundwork for the airline and if they wanted to work after the pregnancy, they had to submit a fresh application with the company.

The rule has been the same since the airline was launched and even in 2010, they faced strict criticism from gender equality groups all around the world for sticking to ‘archaic” regulations.

However, the situation has changed quite a bit due to the labour shortage resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the new rules which came into effect on July 15, the women will be allowed to resume their work after their pregnancy and will also be granted sufficient maternity leaves.

In the official statement, the airline said that it will now allow “ground placements for pregnant cabin crew last for at least three months and as long as nine months" under the new rules.

There is still one point of contention as the cabin crew will still be placed on leave without pay if they want a cabin job and if they will be free to apply for ground staff work during the pregnancy.

Reports of an apple watch saving someone’s life is not new. Over the years, there were several instances where the gadget was able to help people with its features which detect oxygen levels in the blood, heartbeat, and other major health parameters. However, in a first, a woman credited the Apple Watch for detecting her pregnancy in a post on the social media platform Reddit.

"Usually, my resting heart rate is about 57, and my heart rate has increased to 72," she posted.

The government said Tuesday that abortion up to 20 weeks will be permitted in Thailand, easing restrictions on pregnant people's access to the previously prohibited medical practice.

Up until February of last year, when it was made permissible for pregnant women up to 12 weeks, abortions were still prohibited in the kingdom, save in cases of rape or threats to the mother's life.

However, the country with a majority of Buddhists still views abortion with great stigma as a result of a 2010 incident in which 2,000 unlawfully aborted foetuses were found in a temple.

According to a government statement released on Tuesday, terminations of up to 20 weeks would now be allowed and "the termination will not count as a crime."

Abortion used to be illegal and may result in a fine of up to 10,000 baht ($263), up to six months in jail, or both.

Women seeking legal abortions who are above 12 weeks pregnant but under 20 weeks must meet specific requirements, according to a notice published in the Royal Gazette on Monday.

In accordance with the government's official statement, individuals in this group must "consult with medical consultants so that the woman has all of the information before she decides to terminate the pregnancy."

Despite the law's amendment in February of last year, access to abortions is still severely restricted throughout the kingdom.

According to Traisuree Traisoranakul, a deputy government spokesperson, women seeking abortions must be handled respectfully and in absolute confidence.

She continued by saying that they needed to be given all the medical data and shouldn't be under any pressure to make a choice.

30 days after the notification is published, the new law will take effect.

Terminating pregnancy up to 20 weeks 'will not count as crime' in Thailand

Although serious pregnancy issues are uncommon in the United States, thousands of women nevertheless experience them every year.

The mother's health, the health of the foetus, or both, may be in jeopardy. Many of them are more prevalent in women of colour and raise the maternal death rate among them disproportionately.

While extreme circumstances may compel patients and their doctors to contemplate abortions, the choice has been restricted by regulations passed or proposed after the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade in June.

If the mother develops an illness that has serious or life-threatening health repercussions, exemptions are permitted in at least 19 states that have abortion restrictions, but evaluating whether either circumstance applies can be difficult to judge. While a result of the new abortion restrictions, doctors claim they are being forced to watch as their patients' conditions worsen.

PREECLAMPSIA

Preeclampsia is an extremely dangerous form of high blood pressure that can appear suddenly during pregnancy, usually in the second half.

One in every twenty-five pregnancies has it develop. A headache, impaired eyesight, and swollen limbs are among symptoms.

Hospitalisation may be part of the course of treatment, along with blood pressure-lowering and lung-development-enhancing medications. When the mother's life is in risk, ending the pregnancy by forcing birth or by an abortion may be advised.

Patients may experience difficulties with their kidneys in addition to high blood pressure. Seizures, strokes, and fluid in the lungs are all possible in extreme circumstances.

PREMATURE MEMBRANE RUPTURE

At the beginning of labour, or "water breaking," membranes in the fluid-filled amniotic sac that surrounds the foetus frequently rupture or break. The sac ruptures prematurely in at least 3% of pregnancies, frequently resulting in preterm birth.

The syndrome makes uterine infections more likely. Doctors may advise aborting the pregnancy, particularly if the baby is unlikely to survive if the water breaks before 24 weeks.

Doctors might carefully follow the patients and look out for infection symptoms rather than performing abortions. However, odds of a healthy birth are low and risks of serious maternal problems are significantly raised, accord

ECTOPIC PREGNANCIES

When a fertilised egg develops outside the womb, frequently in a fallopian tube, it is called an ectopic pregnancy. In 2% of pregnancies in the United States, it occurs.

The embryo has no chance of living, but it may cause the tube to rupture, resulting in life-threatening internal haemorrhage.

Medication that prevents the embryo from growing and hence terminates the pregnancy may be used as treatment for less severe situations. If surgery is needed, the damaged tube may need to be removed.

Doctors stress that ectopic pregnancy treatment is not the same as an abortion.

Some pro-life politicians have asserted that ectopic pregnancies may be reimplanted in the uterus, occasionally citing two unsupported case reports that were published in medical publications decades apart. Any such actions, according to experts, would harm the

ABRATION OF PLACENTA

The placenta, an important organ that grows during pregnancy and connects with the umbilical cord to help the foetus eat, is attached to the uterine wall.

The placenta prematurely separates from the womb after about 20 weeks of pregnancy in about 1 in 100 pregnancies. That may endanger the foetus' life and result in potentially harmful maternal haemorrhage.

It could be advised to induce labour or end the pregnancy.

According to a new research, stem cells can be regrown in damaged umbilical cord.

Research by Notre Dame University revealed a "new strategy" that can restore the damaged stem cells and enable it to grow new tissues again.

The new approach is based on specially engineered "nanoparticles" which can store medicine and deliver it just to the stem cells by attaching directly to the stem cells’ surface. It is just 150 nanometres in diameter, the study said. The particles release the medicine slowly "making it highly effective even at very low doses".

The "backpacks" enabled the damaged stem cells to form new blood vessels during the experiment with mice. However, it could take many years before the new technique can become part of healthcare, scientists say.

Saving the umbilical cord: Researchers show how damaged stem cells can be restored

Researchers at the Milner Centre for Evolution at the University of Bath recently in a study said “selfish chromosomes” are to be blamed for early death of majority of human embryos. Before even a mother realises, she is pregnant, over half of fertilised eggs experience a very early death. The research published in the journal PLoS Biology, explains why fish embryos usually do not have an impact on the treatment of infertility while human embryos don’t survive. And if by chance, those who survive are aborted after few weeks, reported by ANI.

Professor Laurence Hurst, Director of the Milner Centre for Evolution’s looked into why, despite thousands of years of evolution, it’s difficult for human to have a baby. As the embryos contain incorrect number of chromosomes many deaths are caused directly because of this. The fertilised eggs should have 46 chromosomes, 23 each from mother and father.

Professor Hurst said, “Very many embryos have the wrong number of chromosomes, often 45 or 47, and nearly all of these die in the womb. Even in cases like Down syndrome with three copies of chromosome 21, about 80 per cent sadly will not make it to term." The professor explains, “This first step of making eggs is odd. One chromosome of a pair will go to the egg the other will be destroyed. But if a chromosome `knows` it is going to be destroyed it has nothing to lose, so to speak. Remarkable recent molecular evidence has found that when some chromosomes detect that they are about to be destroyed during this first step, they change what they do to prevent being destroyed, potentially causing chromosome loss or gain, and the death of the embryo." If the death of an embryo would benefit the other children of that mother, as the selfish chromosomes will frequently be in the siblings and will get extra nourishment.

The researcher further added that amphibians and fish don’t have this problem. He said, “In over 2000 fish embryos not one was found with chromosomal errors from mum.” Birds likewise have a very low rate- roughly 1/25th of what all mammals experience and the probable reason Hurst pointed is nestling competition that occurs only when they have hatched.

Humans also only have one child at a time and the death of an early embryo allows the mother to quickly begin another pregnancy- having no idea her egg has been fertilised.

Study reveals why humans have difficulty in having babies

In medical terminology, the occurrence of a second conception during pregnancy is called superfetation. It can happen in just days or weeks after the first one. In simple terms, the condition is the situation when a pregnancy occurs during an existing pregnancy. It gives rise to embryos of different ages in the uterus. This condition is extremely rare in humans.

Superfetation: Can a woman get pregnant again while already being pregnant?

The leak is out, and according to it, the US Supreme Court has voted to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion decision from 1973, which preserves women's rights to abortion in the United States.

The leaked draft of a majority judgement, which Politico published on Monday and the Supreme Court certified as legitimate on Tuesday morning, is not the final decision.

It's possible that this will change in the future months.

However, five of the Supreme Court's nine justices agree with Mississippi, which brought the matter before the court, and favour overturning the landmark decision. If that happens, abortion may be made illegal in at least 13 states, and possibly as many as 26.

As a result, hundreds of thousands of people in 26 states opposed to abortion would be forced to seek abortion elsewhere, either by driving hundreds of miles to an abortion clinic or by self-medicating with drugs obtained from grassroots or illegal groups.

The leaked view has re-ignited debate on a topic that has shaped US politics for decades. Let's take a look at what it's all about:

What is the case of Roe v Wade?

The Supreme Court decided in Roe v Wade in 1973 that the right to an abortion is guaranteed under the US constitution.

While abortion is not specifically mentioned in the constitution, the justices ruled that it is protected under the rights to privacy guaranteed by the constitution's guarantees of liberty, particularly the ninth and 14th amendments, the latter of which prohibits a state from depriving "any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law."

Is it possible to overturn it?

With a fresh ruling, a Supreme Court decision can be overturned.

However, such verdicts are uncommon, as most justices are hesitant to depart from the principle of stare decisis, or following precedent.

According to a Quartz analysis, it happened only 161 times in over 9,000 judgements between 1946 and 2020.

Senator Susan Collins testified at Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing that conservative justice Brett Kavanaugh informed her in a closed-door meeting that Roe v Wade was "established law." Kavanaugh was one of the justices who voted in favour of the draft opinion overturning the decision.

How did Roe v Wade come about?

Jane Roe, later identified as Norma McCorvey, was a Texas mother who sought an abortion after becoming pregnant with her third child.

At the time, Texas state law prohibited the procedure unless the woman's life was in danger.

She filed a lawsuit against the government. Meanwhile, Texas Attorney General Henry Wade fought Roe for the state, earning the case the name "Roe v Wade."

McCorvey's lawsuit was one of many brought by pro-abortion rights groups around the country, and it went through multiple hearings and appeals before reaching the Supreme Court.

The court ruled with a 7-2 majority that the Texas law was unconstitutional.

By that time, Roe had already given birth to her third child, but the Supreme Court decided to proceed with the case, ruling her challenge was “capable of repetition” and therefore overcame the “mootness doctrine”.

US Supreme Court abortion ruling leak row: What really is the issue?

The United Nations reproductive health agency said on Wednesday that nearly half of all pregnancies in the world were unintended.

The agency said that out of 121 million unintended pregnancies every year, more than 60 per cent end in abortion, said United Nations Population Fund in new report.

The UNFPA said the report was not about "unwanted babies or happy accidents", but how a combination of gender inequality, poverty, sexual violence, and lack of access to contraception and abortion robbed women of "the most life-altering reproductive choice -- whether or not to become pregnant".

The war in Ukraine and other conflicts are expected to drive the "staggering" number of unintended pregnancies even higher as sexual violence increases and contraception access is disrupted, the report said.

"We have heard stories from pregnant women who knew that nutritionally they weren't going to be able to support their pregnancy" in Ukraine, UNFPA executive director Natalia Kanem said.

"There are also predators and traffickers and examples of people who are seeing the tragedy of war as an opportunity to target women and girls," she told AFP.

She said studies estimated that more than 20 percent of displaced women worldwide experience sexual violence -- "and I would bet that is under-reported because there is so much stigma around the issue."

While figures are still sparse a month into the Ukraine war, she said that the conflict in Afghanistan was expected to lead to 4.8 million unintended pregnancies by 2025.

And the Covid-19 crisis has also hugely disrupted healthcare and contraceptive supplies, leading to up to 1.4 million unintended pregnancies in the first year of the pandemic alone, the UNFPA said.
