The sudden decision to sack a senior Catholic figure came after Francis sent two US bishops to visit Strickland's Texas diocese in June, as per news agency AFP reports.

"The Holy Father has relieved from the pastoral governance of the diocese of Tyler (US) Joseph E. Strickland," the Vatican said in a statement.

It further said that the bishop of Austin, Joe Vasquez, had been named as apostolic administrator of the diocese, however, it did not give any further details.

In Wednesday's text, he said that "regrettably, the climate crisis is not exactly a matter that interests the great economic powers, whose concern is with the greatest profit". &nbsp;

He also repeated a call for changes in the "irresponsible lifestyle" of rich countries, and said relying on technological innovation is not enough.&nbsp;

In his opening address, Pope emphasised being open about a vision of the church that is open and welcoming to all and attempting to make the Church of 1.3 billion believers more tolerant in the face of changing societal norms and demographics.&nbsp;

Same-sex unions could finally be blessed by the Catholic Church. For the first time, Pope Francis has suggested that gay marriages could be blessed by Catholic priests.&nbsp;

However, as per the supreme pontiff, these blessings, if granted, would be only on a "case-to-case basis".

<h2>A case of 'dubia'</h2>

Pope Francis made this suggestion in a letter, responding to his 'harshest critics' in the Catholic ranks, reports CNN.

Previously, five conservative cardinals, in a letter, had formally questioned the Pope on a number of topics, including the October meeting of bishops and the impact it may have on the Church's teachings.

Cardinals Walter Brandmuller, Raymond Leo Burke, Juan Sandoval Iniguez, Robert Sarah and Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, had also asked in their 'dubia,' Pope Francis about his intentions to bless same-sex unions and his aspirations regarding the potential ordination of women priests. They initially sent the letter on July 10.

However, unsatisfied with the Pope's initial response, the five cardinals reworded their dubia and, citing "the gravity of the matter" sent it again on August 21.

Dubia is Latin for doubt and is an official request to a sitting pontiff. It seeks a simple "yes" or "no" response on disputed matters of Catholic teaching, practice and the running of the Church. &nbsp;&nbsp;

'Help from God'

"When you ask for a blessing, you are expressing a request for help from God, a prayer to be able to live better, a trust in a father who can help us live better," said the Pope in a letter released by the Vatican.

In the letter dated September 25, he also said that clergy must show "pastoral prudence, must adequately discern if there are forms of blessing requested by one or various people, which do not convey a wrong concept of marriage."&nbsp;

"We cannot be judges who only deny, reject, and exclude," he said.

However, he maintained that the&nbsp;Church still considered same-sex relationships "objectively sinful" and that same-sex marriages wouldn't be recognised.

Pope Francis's recent statement contradicts his statement from March, when he said, "God cannot bless sin." &nbsp;

The Vatican has for long resolutely defined marriage as the indissoluble union between man and woman, and has long opposed gay marriage.

On women's ordination, the letter said the Pontiff will uphold the words of the late Pope John Paul II, who around two decades back said that the Church had "no authority" to ordain women, but that the issue needed to be evaluated in order to educate those who doubt it.

Pope Francis says Catholic Church can bless same-sex unions on 'case-by-case basis', amid tussle

In a move that will further cement Pope Francis’ legacy, he elevated 21 clergymen from distant corners of the world to the rank of cardinal, on Saturday (Sep 30), significantly raising the percentage of electors chosen by him who will have the right to vote for his successor. During the ceremony, Francis also emphasised on diversity and said it is indispensable to the future of the Catholic Church.

In a ceremony at St. Peter’s Square, which is known as a consistory, the pope “created” 21 new cardinals, so-called “Princes of the Church”. Notably, they are now his closest advisers at the Vatican and around the world, one of whom could one day become the successor to the current pontiff.&nbsp;

“The College of Cardinals is called to resemble a symphony orchestra, representing the harmony and synodality of the Church,” said the 86-year-old pope. He added, “Diversity is necessary; it is indispensable. However, each sound must contribute to the common design.”&nbsp;

The 21 new cardinals include diplomats, close advisers and administrators. There are now 137 cardinal electors out of which 73 per cent have been selected by Francis.&nbsp;

The selection of the new cardinals was closely watched as an indication of the priorities and position of the Church and with a majority of them chosen by Francis, there are higher chances of the next pope sharing a similar vision of a more progressive and inclusive Church.

This was the ninth consistory since Francis in 2013 was named head of the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics.&nbsp;

Each of the 21 new so-called “Princes of the Church,” one by one knelt before the pope who then bestowed on them the two symbols of their high office – a ring of office and the red, three-blade hat known as a “biretta”.

<h2>Who has the pope chosen?</h2>

Notably, 18 of the 21 of the new cardinals are under the age of 80 making them eligible under Church law to enter a secret conclave to elect the next pope after Francis’ death or resignation, and are known as “cardinal electors.”&nbsp;

The new cardinals come from the United States, France, Italy, Argentina, Switzerland, South Africa, Spain, Colombia, South Sudan, Hong Kong, Poland, Malaysia, Tanzania, Venezuela, and Portugal.&nbsp;

It is also worth noting that throughout his papacy, Francis has sought to create a more inclusive and universal Church, looking past Europe in regions like Africa, Asia and Latin America to fill the Church’s highest ranks.

“He is looking for cardinals who correspond to the times. These are people who have all taken a step away from the Church of the past, who positively ensure a break,” an informed observer of the Holy See told news agency AFP.&nbsp;

Arguably one of the most significant appointments, on Saturday was that of Bishop Stephen Chow Sau-Yan of Hong Kong since he is said to have major links to the Catholic Church in communist China.&nbsp;

This comes as the Vatican is trying to improve conditions for Catholics in China and months after the bishop made his historic visit to Beijing in April.&nbsp;

Pope Francis on Saturday (September 23) appealed to the European governments to welcome migrants in their countries and not to consider them as “invaders”, as the religious leader stepped his foot into a very sensitive political debate which has been inflamed by mass arrivals. 
 
"Those who risk their lives at sea do not invade, they look for welcome," said Francis in a speech during a conference of bishops and young people from the Mediterranean in the French port city of Marseille.

<h2>Mediterranean turning into a 'sea of death': Pope</h2>

"There is a cry of pain that resonates most of all, and it is turning the Mediterranean, the 'mare nostrum', from the cradle of civilization into the 'mare mortuum', the graveyard of dignity: it is the stifled cry of migrant brothers and sisters," he stated, as he used Latin terms meaning "our sea" and "sea of death". 
 
Migration is "a reality of our times, a process that involves three continents around the Mediterranean and that must be governed with wise foresight, including a European response," said the pontiff.

The 35-minute speech of Pope Francis got a standing ovation from his audience, however, his stance on migration may have not pleased French President Emmanuel Macron and Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, who were present at the event and have been planning tougher measures for controlling arrivals. 
 
The forceful interventions of the pope come as mass arrivals ignited the migration debate on the Italian island of Lampedusa last week. 
 
Speaking at a monument to people lost at sea on his arrival in Marseille on Friday, the pontiff had insisted that "people who are at risk of drowning when abandoned on the waves must be rescued". 
 
He said that migrants who face the risk of drowning at sea "must be rescued" because doing so is "a duty of humanity" and that those who avoid rescuing such people commit "a gesture of hate".

Pope Francis on Monday (September 4) accepted that his recent comments on Russia, which were perceived as praise for imperialism by Ukraine, were poorly phrased.

The pope stated that he intended to remind Russia's cultural heritage and not political one to its young citizens. While interacting with reporters aboard the plane on his way back from Mongolia, Francis stated that he wished to assure China, which has complicated relations with the Vatican, that the Catholic Church should not be considered a foreign power with any ulterior motives.

"I was not thinking of imperialism when I said that," said Francis, reacting to the comments he made last month. In a video conference held on August 25, Pope Francis talked about tsars Peter I and Catherine II, who had expanded Russian territory, and told the young Russian Catholics that they were the heirs of the "great Russian empire".

The remarks led to an uproar in Ukraine because the two Russian monarchs' legacies were invoked by Russian President Vladimir Putin while he was trying to justify the invasion of Ukraine.

"Maybe it wasn't the best way of putting it, but in speaking of the great Russia, I was thinking not so much geographically but culturally," said Francis, while referring to Russian literary icon Fyodor Dostoevsky.

"It was an off-the-cuff comment that came to mind because I studied it (Russian history) in school. Russian culture is of such beauty, such profoundness. It should not be cancelled because of political problems. There were dark political years in Russia but the heritage is there, available to all," he stated.

<h2>'Catholic Church is not a foreign power'</h2>

Speaking about the Vatican-China relations, Francis said: "I think we have to move forward in the religious aspect in order to understand each other better so that Chinese citizens do not think the Church does not accept their culture and their values and (do not think) that the Church represents another foreign power."

"These two brother bishops - the emeritus of Hong Kong and the current bishop of Hong Kong. I would like to take advantage of their presence to send a warm greeting to the noble Chinese people," he said in Italian.

"I wish the best for all the (Chinese) people, to go forward, to always progress. And to Chinese Catholics I ask to be good Christians and good citizens," he said.

<h2>'Good Christians and good citizens'</h2>

The "good Christians and good citizens" phrase used by Francis on Sunday is the one that the Vatican frequently uses in order to reassure communist governments that giving more freedom to Catholics would only help their countries' social and economic advancement.

Francis, on Saturday, seemed to send a more inferential message, telling a gathering of Catholic missionaries that governments had "nothing to fear" from the Catholic Church.

"Governments and secular institutions have nothing to fear from the Church's work of evangelisation, for she has no political agenda to advance," said the pontiff, without mentioning China explicitly.

Earlier on Sunday, Francis assembled leaders of different religions who were operating in Mongolia in an intimate theatre.

"Religious traditions, for all their distinctiveness and diversity, have impressive potential for the benefit of society as a whole," the Argentine Jesuit told the group, which included Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, and representatives of Shamanism, among others.

After his speech, a head monk at a Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, Natsagdorj Damdinsuren, said the pope's visit "proves the solidarity of the human race declaring peace together".&nbsp;

"I am just a humble Buddhist monk but for me, war and conflict are the most tragic events of our time. I guess other religions agree with me," Damdinsuren said.&nbsp;

At the airport, a woman in traditional dress offered the pope solid yoghurt, a customary Mongolian gesture of welcome, before he was wheeled past an honour guard wearing ornate blue and red uniforms and holding rifles.

Apart from Mongolian and Vatican flags on poles on the highway, and traffic backed up by the passing of his motorcade, there were barely any signs that the pope was in town.

One of the few banners along his motorcade route into the modern capital surrounded by a mostly barren expanse was held up by Catholics from Vietnam, a country once hostile to Western religions but which recently upgraded its relations with the Vatican.

Well-wishers greeted the pope, some putting on a brief song and dance performance, when he arrived at his destination in the city centre.

"I'm so happy to see the pope," said 47-year-old Catholic devotee Otgon Zesenjav. "I'm very thankful for his visit. We have been waiting for this moment for such a long time. He shook my hand twice. I'm so excited."

There are only 1,450 Catholics in Mongolia, administered by Cardinal Giorgio Marengo, who started working in the country more than 20 years ago as a young priest.

<h2>'Improving relations'</h2>

Visiting places where Catholics are a minority is part of Francis's policy of drawing attention to people and problems in what he has called the peripheries of society and of the world. He has not visited most of the capitals of Western Europe.

Talking to reporters on the plane from Rome, Francis said he was looking forward to visiting even just one part of the vast country, said it had a "small population but with a great culture".

Francis, who had an intestinal operation in June, looked relatively fit as he walked through the reporters' section of the plane, leaning on his cane and stopping to chat.

As is customary, Francis, who besides being the leader of the world's 1.3 billion Catholics is also a head of state, wired greetings to the leaders of each country he flew over, including China, with which the Vatican has had difficult relations.

The Holy See has full diplomatic relations with Taiwan, the democratic island that Beijing claims as its own, while China’s Catholics have long been split between a state-backed official church and an underground flock loyal to the Pope.

Francis, in his message to Chinese President Xi Jinping, said he had good wishes for all the people of China and assured the president of his prayers for the "wellbeing of the nation".

A spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, Wang Wenbin, said the pope's blessing reflected friendship and goodwill, noting that China and the Vatican had maintained communication in recent years.

"China is willing to continue to work with the opposite side to hold constructive dialogue, enhance understanding, build mutual trust and advance the process of improving relations between the two sides," Wang said.

Francis will preside over several religious events before he leaves on Monday, the centrepiece being a Mass in the Steppe Arena on Sunday.

He will also attend an inter-religious service and inaugurate a charity centre to help the needy, regardless of their religion.

Pope Francis is facing criticism for telling Russian youths to not give up their "legacy" as heirs of a "great, enlightened Russian empire", referring to the heirs of past tsars such as Peter the Great. Notably, President Vladimir Putin hails them and holds them up as an example to justify the "special military operation" in Ukraine.&nbsp;

On Friday, Pope Francis told young Russians, who were gathered for the All-Russian Meeting of Catholic Youth in St. Petersburg that "never give up this legacy, you are the heirs of the great Mother Russia, go forward with it".&nbsp;

Pope said, "Don't forget (your) heredity. You are heirs of the great Russia - the great Russia of the saints, of kings, the great Russia of Peter the Great, of Catherine II, the great Russian empire, cultured, so much culture, so much humanity. You are the heirs of the great mother Russia. Go forward." He was reading the prepared speech in Spanish, but switched in between and started speaking in Italian.&nbsp;

The prepared text of the address was released by the Vatican, but it did not include the last, improvised paragraph. Ukraine responded to the comments, calling them "deeply regrettable".&nbsp;

Oleg Nikolenko, who is the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, said on Facebook: "It is precisely with such imperialist propaganda, the 'spiritual ties' and the 'need' to save 'great Mother Russia' that the Kremlin justifies the killing of thousands of Ukrainians and the destruction of Ukrainian cities and villages."&nbsp;

"It is deeply regrettable that such notions of being a great power, which contributes, in essence, to Russia's chronic aggressiveness, are voiced by the pope, either knowingly or unknowingly," Nikolenko added.&nbsp;

Francis, who has repeatedly called for peace in Ukraine, also&nbsp;met with a delegation of 15 young people from the war-torn country.&nbsp;

Pope has not come alone, a streak of controversies has also followed as this visit has been shadowed by the <a href="https://portuguese-american-journal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Abusos.pdf">Church's sexual abuse scandal</a>&nbsp;which was uncovered six months ago.&nbsp;

<h2>Sex abuse scandal&nbsp;</h2>

A 500-page report in February revealed that at least 4,815 children were sexually abused by members of the Portuguese Catholic Church over the past 70 years.&nbsp;

The accused members were mostly priests and the commission investigating the issue said in a report that the findings are the "tip of the iceberg".&nbsp;

At the time of the release of the report, child psychiatrist Pedro Strecht, who headed the commission, said that the probing authorities want to pay a "sincere tribute to those who were abuse victims during their childhood and dared to give a voice to silence" and he said that the data is heartbreaking and "much more than a statistic".&nbsp;

According to the child psychiatrist, the 4,815 cases were the "absolute minimum" number of victims of sexual abuse by clergy members in Portugal since 1950. He said that "these numbers are just the tip of the iceberg".&nbsp;

The report has mentioned that most perpetrators (around 77 per cent) were priests and 57 per cent of the victims were men.&nbsp;

Strecht said that they were abused in Catholic schools, churches, priests' homes, and confessionals, among other locations.&nbsp;

The majority of the sexual abuses took place when the children were aged 10-14, with the youngest victim being just two-years-old.&nbsp;

Details about the scandal impacted the image of the institution and forced the Portuguese Roman Catholic Church to apologise to the victims.&nbsp;

In fact, a poll in July by Lisbon's Catholic University of Portugal found that 68 per cent of all Portuguese felt the Church's image had deteriorated in the aftermath of the sex scandal.&nbsp;

When the report was published, Jose Ornelas, the head of the Bishops' Conference, said that Portuguese bishops would look into implementing "more efficient and appropriate mechanisms" to prevent future abuses.&nbsp;

Local reports have mentioned that the place where Pope is staying - the Vatican embassy - was surrounded by young believers, who jumped, sang and waved their country's flag. Young Catholics from nearly every country in the world have registered for the event.&nbsp;

As quoted by the news agency Reuters, 20-year-old Carlos Hernandez&nbsp;said that World Youth Day "is a sign of faith and union in which all of us get together for a cause. It's very emotional".&nbsp;

Francis has implemented several changes in the Church since his election in 2013 and has been pushing forward with a series of reforms that he hopes will leave a lasting legacy.&nbsp;

However, experts have said that he must strike a fine balance between appealing to more liberal believers and offending conservatives by empowering women and making the church more accepting and less judgmental of some groups, especially the LGBTQ+ community.&nbsp;

According to the child psychiatrist, the 4,815 cases were the "absolute minimum" number of victims of sexual abuse by clergy members in Portugal since 1950. He said that "these numbers are just the tip of the iceberg". The report has mentioned that most perpetrators (around 77 per cent) were priests and 57 per cent of the victims were men. Strecht said that they were abused in Catholic schools, churches, priests' homes, and confessionals, among other locations. Francis is on a five-day visit to Portugal, from August 2 to 6. During his visit, he will attend the World Youth Day global gathering which is a week-long celebration including religious, cultural and festive events and is held every three years in a different city. According to the Vatican, about 330,000 young people have registered and many more might attend. Meanwhile, Portuguese officials estimate that more than one million people are expected to take part.

On Monday, Prime Minister Antonio Costa called it “the biggest international event” Portugal has ever hosted.&nbsp;

This will be the first event&nbsp;in Portugal since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and&nbsp;the 86-year-old Pope’s first trip since his intestinal surgery last month.

Francis was greeted with a standing ovation as he arrived on the stage in a wheelchair to deliver a speech which was centred around Portuguese literature and music.

Pope Francis, who is also the very first Latin American pope, said he hoped this year's event would serve as an "impulse towards universal openness" for Europe.

"For the world needs Europe, the true Europe. It needs Europe's role as a bridge and peacemaker in its eastern part, in the Mediterranean, in Africa and in the Middle East," he said.&nbsp;

"We are transforming great reserves of life into dumping grounds of plastic," he said. "How can we claim to believe in young people, if we do not give them healthy spaces in which to build the future?"
