After a relatively smooth rollout, Twitter announced that it would be shutting down its ‘legacy verified programme' on April 1 but continued for nearly 20 days after. What were the ‘insinuations’?

The pope’s remarks came days after the Vatican media called an audiotape from a purported Roman mobster, “slanderous” who insinuated that John Paul would go out looking for underage girls to molest. The audio clip in question was played on an Italian TV program by Pietro Orlandi, the brother of a schoolgirl named Emanuela Orlandi, who was also the daughter of a Vatican usher.&nbsp;

The alleged mobster said that more than 40 years ago, girls were brought into the Vatican to be molested and that Pope John Paul knew about it. In 1983, Emanuela, who was 15 years old, at the time, did not return home on June 22 after a music lesson in Rome. She lived with her parents in a Vatican City apartment.&nbsp;

After years of investigating her disappearance, it continues to remain one of Italy’s most enduring mysteries and has given rise to several theories over the years.&nbsp;

A recent Netflix documentary “Vatican Girl” which looked at some of the possibilities related to the case also provided new testimony. It showed a friend who said that Emanuela had told her a week before her disappearance that a high-ranking Vatican cleric had made sexual advances toward her.&nbsp;

Pope Francis’ remarks

In recent days, the audio clip has caused a stir in the Vatican with many condemning and criticising the insinuation about the late pontiff.&nbsp;

On Sunday, Francis defended John Paul whose papacy spanned from 1978 to 2005 and said, “Certain that I am interpreting the sentiments of the faithful from all over the world, I express a grateful thought to the memory of St John Paul, who in these days has been the object of offensive and unfounded insinuations.”&nbsp;

In a telephonic interview with Reuters, Orlandi, on Sunday also said that it was “correct that Francis defended John Paul II,” adding that during the TV appearance, he was just “repeating what others had said. I certainly did not see it myself.”

However, John Paul’s secretary, Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, throughout his leadership called Orlandi’s actions “ignoble, unrealistic, laughable if they were not tragic, even criminal”. Meanwhile, even Pietro’s lawyer, Laura Sgro, has insisted her client wasn’t accusing anyone, reported Associated Press.&nbsp;

Pope Francis condemns ‘offensive and baseless’ insinuations about St John Paul II

Pope Francis was in an unconscious state when he was suffering from bronchitis and was taken to the hospital two weeks ago, and he could have died, as per an Italian man who has been widely reported to have spoken with him regularly.

The Italian man claimed that he had last talked to the pontiff on Saturday. The 86-year-old pope was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on March 29 in Rome and was three days later discharged by the hospital. During the Easter celebration he led last week, the pope appeared in good health.

Michele Ferri, who belongs to the central Italian city of Pesaro, while speaking to Reuters said that the pope's health appeared better in their latest conversation compared to the last time when the two men spoke in January.

"He seemed very tired (back then)," said Ferri. He confirmed the remarks he had made earlier, while speaking to the Italian regional newspaper Il Resto del Carlino, in which he had quoted the pope as saying, "A few more hours and I'm not sure I would have been around to tell it."

"I told him: you really gave us a fright!" said Ferri.

The Italian media widely quotes Ferri as someone who regularly speaks to the pope, since he was first called by Pope Francis to comfort him after his brother's death who had died in a robbery a decade ago.

It is known that the pope keeps a small list of people he contacts regularly, generally for giving them comfort after some tragedy.

The names of such people close to the Pope have never been confirmed by the Vatican but the institution does not deny that the Pope speaks to Ferri.

In the documentary, he said, "Sex is one of the beautiful things that God has given to the human person." referring to masturbation, Pope said that to express yourself sexually is "richness". "So anything that detracts from real sexual expression lessens you and depletes this richness," he said.&nbsp;

The young speakers asked Pope several intriguing, offbeat and thorny questions, to which he responded spontaneously. He was asked whether or not he knew what a "non-binary person" is, they also asked questions like does he know what is Tinder, and more. To the non-binary person's question, Pope replied affirmatively and reiterated that LGBT people must be welcomed by the Catholic Church.&nbsp;

He said: "All persons are the children of God, all persons. God does not reject anybody, God is a father. And I have no right to expel anyone from the Church."&nbsp;

Pope's remarks were published by the official Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, as he also talked about abortion as the Roman Catholic Church has consistently condemned abortion. It says that abortion is the direct and purposeful taking of the life of the unborn child.&nbsp;

On abortion, Pope said that priests should be "merciful" towards women who have terminated a pregnancy, but said the practice remains unacceptable.&nbsp;

"It good to call things by their name. It is one thing to accompany the person who had one (abortion), quite another to justify the act," he said.

Quoting the medical team of Pope Francis, the Vatican said he is suffering from an infectious bronchitis virus which is a highly contagious respiratory disease and needed an intravenous infusion of antibiotics.

On Thursday the Vatican, while conforming that Francis was not bedridden, said that he said his prayers in the small chapel which was within his hospital suite.

"I am touched by the many messages received in these hours and I express my gratitude for the closeness and prayer," wrote the pope on Twitter.

However, it still remains unclear if Francis will be able to take part in any of the Holy Week events which will start with Palm Sunday on April 2.

Cardinals have been informed by the Vatican that this year Pope would not preside over Easter services and that the ceremonies would be shared out between them.

For Pope Francis, one of the biggest challenges has been to deal with child sex abuse by Catholic priests in several countries.

Initially, things did not go well, with a 2014 commission on protecting minors undermined by the resignations of two key members, while in 2018, his defence of a Chilean priest accused of covering up abuse sparked a backlash.

The pope created a commission on protecting minors that was later integrated into the Curia. In 2019, he held an unprecedented summit which heard from victims and he promised an "all-out battle" against clerical abuse.

Concrete changes followed, from opening up Vatican archives to the lay courts to making it compulsory to report suspicions of abuse and any attempts to cover it up to Church authorities.&nbsp;

However, anything said in the confessional box remains sacrosanct.
