Poland said it would send four MiG-29 jet fighters to Ukraine in coming days—making it the first Western nation to supply warplanes to Kyiv, which is preparing a counteroffensive against Russia’s invading forces.

Poland to Send Four MiG-29 Fighters to Ukraine

Russia vowed to 'destroy' the dozens of Soviet-era MiG-29 fighter jets that Poland and Slovakia have pledged to send to Ukraine in the coming days. The Kremlin said the fighter jets would be 'destroyed' before insisting that the deployment of Western arms - including warplanes and tanks - would not change the course of the war. Slovakia also approved a plan to send its fleet of 13 MiG-29s to Ukraine.

Slovakia, Poland to donate MiG-29 jets to Ukraine

Slovakia's Prime Minister Eduard Heger said on Friday (March 17) that his government has approved sending 13 MiG-29 fighter jets to war-torn Ukraine. Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister Heger said, "Slovak government just approved sending 13 MiG-29s to Ukraine! Promises must be kept and when Zelensky asked for more weapons, including fighter jets, I said we'll do our best. Glad others are doing the same. Military aid is to ensure that Ukraine can defend itself and the entire Europe against Russia."

Addressing a press conference, Heger also said that his government would deliver a Kub air defence system to Ukraine, the news agency AFP reported.

In the first such case in Poland, women's rights activist Justyna Wydrzynska was found guilty of supplying abortion pills to a pregnant woman. The Catholic country has some of the tightest regulations in Europe and all abortions are prohibited except in instances of rape, incest, or situations in which the mother's life or health is in danger, as per AFP.

"Guilty: of providing assistance," the Abortion Dream Team organisation co-founded by Wydrzynska said on Twitter after the verdict.

It said that she was sentenced to "eight months of community service at 30 hours a month."

Wydrzynska faces up to three years in jail for "helping with an abortion" and the "unauthorised possession of medicine".

Speaking to reporters outside the court, Wydrzynska said she would file an appeal.

"I do not feel guilty... I don't accept the verdict," she added.

The Abortion Dream Team, an organisation co-founded by Wydrzynska, claimed that it assisted 44,000 abortions in 2022.

Wydrzynska's defence attorney, Jerzy Podgorski, claimed that if the defendant had not been an activist, the judgment may not have been this harsh.

"If that was a private person, anonymous, and not publicly known, the sentence could have been different," Podgorski said, adding that he had argued in court that Wydrzynska's conduct had caused negligible social harm.

The ruling Law & Justice party of Poland came under fire over the death of opposition MP’s 15-year-old son Mikolaj Filiks, who committed suicide after a state-run radio station, in its report, identified him as a victim of a paedophile.

Poland's parliament, Sejm, observed silence for a minute on Tuesday on the demise of the MP's son. Filiks' mother, Magdalena Filiks, who is an MP from Civic Platform, which is Poland's main opposition party, last week said that he had died in February.

The teenager ended his life weeks after the state-run broadcaster Polskie Radio network, in its report on a convicted paedophile by Radio Szczecin, revealed the victim's details that made it possible for Filiks to be easily identified to the public.

In the report aired in December, the ages of minors were disclosed by the radio and it was said that one of them was the child of a local man. The report further stated that the convicted man — whose trial was held by the court in private in 2021 to protect his victims — was a former member of Civic Platform, an LGBT activist and an election candidate.

The report, which other state media widely relayed, led to a major uproar in Poland, as the supporters of the opposition party alleged that it was orchestrated by the national-conservative Law & Justice (PiS) party for political gain and hence, the party is partly responsible for the child's death.

PiS, which will be fighting a tough election later this year, tightly controls Poland's media and has led campaigns against the rights of the LGBT community. In turn, the ruling party's supporters have claimed that Civic Platform deliberately covered the original abuse conviction.

Leader of Civic Platform, former Polish prime minister and European Council president, Donald Tusk tweeted his vow to “hold PiS to account for every villainy, for all human harm and tragedies they have caused while in power”.

The Tunel Wielki cave in Ojców National Park, an archaeological site in Poland, has sparked fresh curiosity in the global science fraternity after some crucial findings - related to excavation - were revealed. Flint tools discovered in the cave could be among the oldest finds of a specific type known from this area of Poland. Extinct species Homo heidelbergensis, ancestors of Homo sapiens neanderthalensis, could be the creators, as per the research by a team led by Dr. Małgorzata Kot from the Faculty of Archaeology of the University of Warsaw (FAUW). Flints and animal bones are among the finds excavated from the cave in the 1960s by Professor Waldemar Chmielewski, the Polish Academy of Science underlined in a news release in November.

"Bipolar-on-anvil knapping technique prevails in the lithic assemblage, made exclusively in flint. The obtained results have given ground for studying the required cultural adaptive abilities," highlights an article published by Nature journal last year on the research. Bipolar knapping technique involves the interaction anvils, hammerstones, Homo heidelbergensis (also H. sapiens heidelbergensis) existed during the Middle Pleistocene period, about 1.25-.7 million years ago. These findings shed new light for the researchers as "peopling of Central Europe by Middle Pleistocene hominids is highly debatable, mainly due to the relatively harsh climatic and environmental conditions that require cultural and anatomical adjustments," the journal underlines.

Animal remains found during the excavation were initially believed to about 40,000 years old but rodent bone analysis by Dr. Claudio Berto from FAUW dated the finds to half a million years ago. Dr. Małgorzata Kot did not only analyse excavation carried out previously but he also discovered a single piece of charcoal with flint artefacts.

"Such well-documented finds from the Lower Paleolithic are extremely rare in Europe and in the world and prove the uniqueness of the site under study," the Institute of Botany, Polish Academy of Sciences, underlines.

US President Joe Biden appeared to trip and fall while climbing steps to board his official chauffeur aircraft, Air Force One in Warsaw, Poland. A video of the incident is now going viral on social media, with netizens showing sympathy for the octogenarian. In the video, Biden can be seen briskly ascending the steps initially, only to fall mid-way through the climb. However, he picks himself up rather quickly and continues to climb the steps, reaching the gate and turning back to give a wave before entering the aircraft. The incident transpired after Biden was returning following his meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and leaders of the Bucharest Nine (B9). While a section of netizens was concerned about Biden's health, another took the opportunity to mock fun. "Joe Joe Joe. It happens to all of us at some point. This is not the first instance when Biden has fallen when going through his routine. Last year, Biden nearly fell on the stage while delivering a speech for New York Governor Kathy Hochul. Italian PM Giorgia Meloni arrives in Kyiv by train from Poland

The war in Ukraine has brought Poland's role to the foreground - one is obviously due to the proximity as the country shares a border, not just with Ukraine but with Russia and Belarus but there is also a firmer voice of diplomacy from the Warsaw.

Ukraine war: Poland Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lukansz Jasina speaks to WION

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that he and U.S. President Joe Biden will discuss possibly increasing U.S. troop presence in Poland and making it more permanent during Biden's upcoming visit to Warsaw.

Poland’s foreign ministry spokesperson Lukasz Jasina said that only Russian President Vladimir Putin can end the war against Ukraine, but quickly added that the hopes of achieving peace in the near term was impossible.

Speaking to WION, Jasina expressed hope that Russia will withdraw its troops and come back to the discussion table for achieving lasting peace.

“Only one person… and that is Putin, the one who started it can end this war. But we believe Russia won't do it and we don't believe that they believe in peace and talks. And this war will not end very quickly,” he said.

“We hope that this war ends quickly and Russia withdraws its troops. But we have no idea what will happen in the next few years. The only thing we know is that this war will not end quickly and there will many victims,” he added.

The spokesperson further said that Poland is arming itself to prepare for any unexpected outcome, adding that “when you want peace, you prepare for war”.

There is a big plan of arming our country in coming years.”

Ever since the Russia-Ukraine war unfolded last year, millions of Ukrainians have fled their homes to neighbouring countries seeking safety, protection and assistance.

When asked how Poland is coping with the influx of refugees from battered Ukraine, he said that their country has been giving priority to women and children and added that they are finding ways to help them.

“Women and children from Ukraine will be accepted here and we are finding ways to help them. There were more than five million people crossing the Polish-Ukraine border, but now it's fewer because many have moved to other western countries. We have got 2 million Ukrainians here at the moment,” Jasina said.

Why is Biden going to Poland, should come to Minsk to ‘end the war’: Belarusian president

U.S. President Joe Biden is expected to visit Poland this month to mark the one year anniversary of the Ukraine war. Biden will meet with Polish President Andrzej Duda during his visit.

Biden to visit Poland to mark first anniversary of Ukraine war

Polish President Andrzej Duda has said that giving F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine would have to be a decision that allies take after consensus. He was speaking with BBC. The pre-recorded interview was aired on Sunday (February 12). “We think that this requires a decision by the allies anyway, which means that we have to make a joint decision... We have such jets, but they are fewer than 50... This poses a serious problem, if we donate even a small part of them anywhere because I don't hesitate to say: we have not enough of these jets," he told BBC's Laura Kuenssberg.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met Duda earlier this week. The meet took place as part of Zelensky's tour of European allies where he was enthusiastically received but secured no public promises of the fighter jets he sought.

Slovakia, Poland's and Ukraine's neighbour, has agreed to send 11 MiG fighters to Ukraine to expand its existing fleet.

Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24 last year. After sustained gains in the first few months of the conflict, Russian forces had to retreat in the face of a Ukrainian counterattack. Western nations have offered considerable help to Ukraine in the form of monetary aid and weapons like missile systems and more. Ukraine will soon get tanks from European nations as it battles the Russian forces.

F-16 fighter jets should be given to Ukraine only after consensus: Poland

Austria is facing heavy criticism after the country granted visas to Russian lawmakers who have been sanctioned amid Moscow’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine to attend the Organization for Security and Cooperation (OSCE) meeting in Vienna. This comes as the European Union member nation has tried to balance its long-standing position of military neutrality amid the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. At least 81 OSCE delegates from 20 countries criticised Austria’s decision, in a letter and called upon the government to ban the participation of the sanctioned Russians, reported the Associated Press.

The letter in question was addressed to Austria’s chancellor, foreign minister and other officials in which at least 81 delegates from 20 countries including France, the United Kingdom, Poland, Ukraine, and so on have called upon the government in Vienna to ban the participation of sanctioned Russian lawmakers. They wrote, “Russian parliamentarians are an integral part of the power system and complicit in the crimes Russia commits every day in Ukraine.”

Therefore, lawmakers from Moscow “have no place in an institution tasked with promoting sincere dialogue and opposition to the war,” the letter added. They also said that Russia would use the meeting to “sow disinformation, fake news and hate speech” and their participation would be read as “indirect legitimisation and part of a return to ‘business as usual,’” reported AFP.

Since the beginning of the conflict, while the Austrian government has condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it has asserted the need to maintain diplomatic relations with Moscow. The European country is also home to several international organisations, including the 57-member nation OSCE which was established during the Cold War to facilitate dialogue between the East and West, of which Russia is also a part.

Reports suggest that Moscow plans to send delegates on February 23 and 24 when the OSCE’s parliamentary assembly is set to convene. However, the Russian delegation includes at least 15 lawmakers who have been sanctioned by the EU. Earlier this month, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg also defended the government’s decision to issue visas to the sanctioned Russian lawmakers.

He argued that despite the “brutal Russian attack against Ukraine”, it is important to have open channels of communication with Moscow. Additionally, the foreign ministry said that they are legally obligated as the host of OSCE headquarters in the country’s capital city to grant visas to representatives of nations who want to participate. So far, Austria has only sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine but unlike most of its EU counterparts has not sent weapons to Kyiv.

This also comes days after Austria expelled four Russian diplomats for acting “in a manner inconsistent with their diplomatic status”. Out of the four diplomats, the two stationed at the Russian Embassy in Austria were declared personae non-gratae and ordered to leave the country by February 8. Whereas the other two worked at the Russian mission to the United Nations in Vienna, said the Austrian foreign ministry, in a statement.

It added, the two working with the UN, acted in a way that was inconsistent with the host country agreement between the United Nations and Austria. While the ministry did not detail the actions of the diplomats, officials speaking on condition of anonymity to Reuters said that the case involved spying.
