According to Polish media, the country's railways were the target of a hacking attack by Polish intelligence agencies. The Polish Press Agency (PAP) stated on Saturday that hackers broke into railway frequencies to disrupt traffic in the country's northwest during the course of the night.

The United States approved the sale of AH-64E &nbsp;Apache attack helicopters to Poland on Monday (August 21). The giant deal with a frontline ally helping Ukraine in its war against Russian aggression is valued at up to $12 billion, the Pentagon said.

The Pentagon said that Poland has asked for 96 Apache attack helicopters and equipment related to it, along with 1,844 Hellfire missiles and 508 Stinger missiles.

The sale "will improve Poland's capability to meet current and future threats by providing a credible force that is capable of deterring adversaries and participating in NATO operations," a State Department statement said.

Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak confirmed the purchase on social media, stating that "until the procedures are completed and the purchased helicopters are delivered to Poland, the US Army will provide us with Apache helicopters from its own resources."

Last year, Poland decided to acquire the Apaches to replace its age-old Soviet-era helicopter fleet after concerns grew over Russia's military action in neighbouring Ukraine.

The NATO member has actively backed US-led measures to support Ukraine against Russian invasion with billion-dollar investment in US weapons delivered to Ukraine traversing the border through Poland.

US approves Apache helicopter sale worth $12 billion to Poland

Poland foiled a network of "amateur" agents established by Russia in its territory who were tasked with carrying out operations like sabotage, assassination and arson, Washington Post reported on Friday (Aug 18).

<meta charset="utf-8" />

According to the US-based newspaper, the Russian intelligence, GRU, was the brains behind the whole operation. It advertised seeking hands for menial tasks like posting fliers or hanging signs in public spaces.

These cryptic job listings had begun appearing on Russian-language Telegram channels in Poland at the start of this year.

The recruits were paid in cryptocurrencies and wire transfers from untraceable bank accounts, officials said. &nbsp;

Though the pay was meagre, it became a quick avenue to make cash for refugees from eastern Ukraine.

In the following weeks, the recruits were told to scout Polish seaports, place cameras along railways and hide tracking devices in military cargo, the Polish investigators told the newspaper.&nbsp;

But in March, new orders came that startled many: derail trains carrying weapons to Ukraine.

<h2 dir="ltr">‘Most serious Russian threat on NATO soil’</h2>

The Polish authorities said that "the foiled operation posed the most serious Russian threat on NATO soil since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine last year."

Polish intelligence officers said that the chief motivation for the recruits was financial gain, rather than ideology.

“Russia’s objective was to disrupt a weapons pipeline through Poland that accounts for more than 80 per cent of the military hardware delivered to Ukraine, a massive flow that has altered the course of the war and that Russia has seemed helpless to interdict, according to Polish and Western security officials,” the Washington Post reported.

Since the dismantling of the network earlier this year, Poland's security services have gathered evidence that has suggested that Russia has been planning other, deadly operations in Poland.

A representative of Poland's domestic security service (ABW), who remained anonymous, told the newspaper that the Russian spy agencies are still active in Poland.&nbsp;

He claimed that recruits had also been tasked with carrying out arson attacks and an assassination, but would not discuss the targets.

"This threat was eliminated, but the broader threat remains," he added.

Washington Post said that its article is based on interviews with more than a dozen security officials in Poland, Ukraine and the United States, as well as information from documents, suspects’ social media accounts, and interviews with relatives and associates of those arrested.

Poland foiled network of ‘amateur’ espionage agents planted by Russia: Report

Poland saw its most significant military parade since the US-Soviet Cold War the military might was on full display at the Polish Capital. The Armed Forces Day Parade marked the 103rd anniversary of the country's victory over the Soviet Union in the historic Battle of Warsaw. The celebrations are also seen as the NATO members intentionally move to flex military muscle in the backdrop of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Latvia’s defence minister, on Tuesday (August 15), ordered the army to help guard the country’s border with Belarus, after a reported 96 attempts by illegal immigrants to enter the country in 24 hours. This also comes amid mounting tensions between the Russian ally and another European Union member nation, Poland, along their shared border.&nbsp;

<h3>Situation at Latvia-Belarus border</h3>

Latvia also recalled Border Guard officers from their holidays on Tuesday to help with patrols. In a statement, the Latvian Border Guard said that it has information about a “possible increase in hybrid threats,” adding that Belarusian authorities were increasingly involved in organising the flow of illegal immigrants.&nbsp;

Notably, Vilnius’ statement echoes similar accusations made by Warsaw in recent weeks which has also accused Minsk and Moscow of organising <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/poland-to-send-more-troops-to-border-with-belarus-accuses-moscow-minsk-of-organising-new-migrant-influx-623538">another migrant influx</a> at their border.&nbsp;

This comes as EU member nations – Latvia, Lithuania and Poland – which share a border with Belarus, have been increasingly&nbsp;worried about border crossings since hundreds of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group members were sent to Minsk at the invitation of President Alexander Lukashenko.

<h2>Poland’s accusations against Belarus</h2>

Poland has been ramping up security along its border with Belarus – a close ally of Russia – after&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/poland-detains-two-russians-for-spreading-wagner-propaganda-625488">Wagner</a> sent its fighters&nbsp;to Minsk in exile following their chief Yevgeny Prigozhin’s aborted mutiny in Russia.&nbsp;

Warsaw is planning to move up to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/poland-to-deploy-around-10000-soldiers-to-border-with-belarus-624520">10,000 additional troops</a> to the border with Belarus to support the Border Guard, said Poland’s Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak, on Thursday (August 10).&nbsp;

Earlier this month, Polish Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Wasik accused Belarus and Russia of organising another migrant influx at their border. “We’re talking about an operation organised by the Russian and Belarusian secret services that is getting more and more intense,” said Wasik.&nbsp;

Similar accusations were made against Minsk and Moscow starting in 2021 when tens of thousands of migrants and refugees crossed or attempted to cross into Poland from neighbouring Belarus. Latvia and Lithuania also faced an immigration crisis&nbsp;around that time, when thousands of people sought to enter the&nbsp;three EU countries. &nbsp;

<h2>Ukraine pours millions into fortifying border with Russia, Belarus</h2>

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, on Tuesday (August 16), also announced that the country will build new fortifications and military infrastructure in northeast regions that border Russia and Belarus.&nbsp;

This comes as Ukraine after its counteroffensive&nbsp;reportedly managed to regain some of its previously Russian-occupied territory and has maintained a significant force in the north.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian PM took to Telegram and said, “At the request of Kharkiv and Chernihiv...we are allocating 911.5 million hryvnias ($24.7 million) for Kharkiv and 363 million ($9.8 million) for Chernihiv to build military engineering and fortification structures.”&nbsp;

The Chernihiv region that borders Russia and Belarus was partially occupied at the beginning of Moscow’s all-out invasion of Kyiv, in February 2022, but it was reportedly later liberated.&nbsp;

Latvia sends army to guard border with Belarus after nearly 100 illegal crossing attempts in 24 hours

Two Russians&nbsp;accused of spreading propaganda on behalf of the Wagner mercenary group in the&nbsp;two biggest cities of&nbsp;Poland, Warsaw and Krakow, have been arrested, said Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski, on Monday (August 14). This comes amid mounting tensions between European Union member Poland and Russian ally Belarus after the mercenary group’s fighters were sent to Minsk to live in exile.&nbsp;

<h2>What are the two Russians accused of?</h2>

According to a statement by the press office of the minister responsible for coordinating special services, the duo distributed around 300 leaflets in the two Polish cities, which were among around 3,000 pro-Wagner items of propaganda in their possession.&nbsp;

The Polish counter-intelligence agency identified the two men as Alexei T. and Andrei G., without providing any further details. The two men were arrested on Friday after they distributed leaflets containing links to “recruitment websites” for the Wagner group, said the Polish agency.&nbsp;

It added, “The Russians had on them more than 3,000 propaganda leaflets promoting the Wagner group. The material was given to them in Moscow.” According to Polish officials, the duo was set to leave the country on Saturday and receive up to 500,000 roubles ($4,930) from Russian authorities for the “commissioned tasks”.&nbsp;

“Both were charged with espionage, among other things,” said the Polish interior minister, on X, formerly known as Twitter.&nbsp;

Prosecutors charged the Russian men with “activities for foreign intelligence against Poland” as well as association with and recruitment for a mercenary service banned under international law, and the promotion of symbols and names supporting Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, said the press office statement.&nbsp;

Poland detains two Russians for spreading Wagner ‘propaganda’

Poland's defence minister has announced measures to strengthen its border security.

Poland: 4,000 troops to aid border guard, 6,000 in reverse

Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of what they think to be a 17th-century "vampire" child who was buried face down and padlocked to the ground. The grave was found in Poland at a necropolis where hundreds of people have been buried over the centuries. Padlocks were used to assure the people that the child would not return from the dead.&nbsp;

As per the scientists, the child was padlocked as part of a superstitious ritual to prevent the departed from making an uninvited return to the world of the living.

The archaeologists from the University of Nicolaus Copernicus in Torun, Poland, made this distressing discovery in the village of Pien in south-eastern Poland.&nbsp;The remains of the infant were discovered alongside those of 30 other persons at the location.&nbsp;

In search of unique burials, researchers excavated graves in an early medieval "necropolis" graveyard near Dąbrowa Chełmińska, a village in the European nation.&nbsp;

Archaeologists believe the child was aged between five and seven at the time of death. Superstitious families would often set protection measures on departed relatives' bodies, according to reseacher&nbsp;Dariusz Poliski, who was involved in the excavation.&nbsp;

As quoted by the report, Poliski said: "The padlock under the foot symbolises the closing of a stage of life and is meant to protect against the return of the deceased, which was probably feared. Such practices originated in folk beliefs and are sometimes described as anti-vampiric."&nbsp;

Polinski explained that some bodies would be buried face-down to make the deceased "bite into the ground and not harm the living" and ensure they did not "pose a threat to people".&nbsp;

Archaeologists also found a triangular padlock under the child's bones, almost identical to the one found with the remains of a mediaeval woman discovered at the site last year.&nbsp;

A probe found that the child's grave was likely violated and a portion of the corpse was removed. However, it is unknown when and why this occurred, or what happened to the remains.&nbsp;

Reports have mentioned that near the child's grave, a "puzzling cluster" of five children's corpses, one of which had a green-coloured jaw fragment, was also found.&nbsp;

The scientists said that a similar greenish tint was also seen on the palate of the woman unearthed last year.&nbsp;

During their fieldwork, they discovered an unusual burial of a pregnant woman, with the remnants of her foetus seemingly preserved.&nbsp;

A probe found that the child's grave was likely violated and a portion of the corpse was removed. However, it is unknown when and why this occurred, or what happened to the remains. Reports have mentioned that near the child's grave, a "puzzling cluster" of five children's corpses, one of which had a green-coloured jaw fragment, was also found. The scientists said that a similar greenish tint was also seen on the palate of the woman unearthed last year. During their fieldwork, they discovered an unusual burial of a pregnant woman, with the remnants of her foetus seemingly preserved. Tensions mount on Belarus-Poland border

Poland is planning to move up to 10,000 additional troops to the border with Belarus to support the Border Guard, said Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak, on Thursday (August 10).&nbsp;

Poland detains Belarusian man suspected of spying for Russia; arrests climb to 16

Tensions are simmering between Poland & Belarus. Poland is about to deploy more troops at the border with Belarus. After the nation accused Belarus of violating Poland's airspace. The incident flared tensions between the NATO member & a key Kremlin ally.

Why are tensions rising between Poland & Belarus?

Russia's mercenary group - Wagner - are back in news! Since Wagner Group aborted mutiny in Russia on June 23rd when it opened rebellion against Russian President Vladimir Putin, the group has now become a concern for Poland.

Poland rushed more troops on its eastern border Tuesday (August 1) after accusing Russian ally Belarus of violating its airspace using military helicopters.

Poland’s defence ministry said in a statement it was sending “additional forces and resources, including combat helicopters” to the border. It added that it also informed NATO about the alleged intrusion and sought an explanation from Belarus’s chargé d’affaires.

Belarus, on the other hand, denies the claims and alleges that Warsaw was inventing accusations as a pretext for a heavy military build-up on the border.

<h2>Poland initially denied any border violation</h2>

Interestingly, Poland earlier denied that any border violation has taken place.

However, it later concluded following “consultations” that the intrusion had indeed taken place “at a very low height, hard to intercept by radar”.

Belarus alleged that Poland changed its statement “apparently after consulting its overseas masters.”

Belarusian defence ministry wrote on Telegram, “This statement was not backed up by data from Poland.”&nbsp;

“The Belarusian defence ministry views it in the manner of an ‘old wives’ tale’ and notes there were no border violations by Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters,” it added.

<h2>Wagner forces in Belarus</h2>

The move from Poland comes after Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko earlier on Tuesday (August 1) mockingly said that Wagner fighters stationed there were eager to “go on a trip to Warsaw,” a statement that sounded alarm bells in the NATO-member country.

It must be noted that an unspecified number of Wagner forces have moved to Belarus following the alleged mutiny episode in Russia.

They are said to have been training Lukashenko’s army in Belarus ever since.

During a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin last month, Lukashenko had jokingly said that some of the fighters were keen to press into Poland and Ukraine.&nbsp;

Poland rushes more troops to east after accusing Belarus of intrusion

The Wagner organisation, a mercenary organisation that rose to prominence following its open rebellion against Russian President Vladimir Putin at an abortive mutiny attempt, is once again in the spotlight. Poland is now concerned about the group's activities.

Poland concerned as Wagner group inches closer to its border

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, on Saturday (July 29) said that a group of a hundred soldiers from Russia’s Wagner mercenary group have moved closer to the Belarusian city of Grodno near the Polish border. This comes weeks after Poland’s defence minister said that they are moving more than 1,000 troops to the east of the country amid concerns over the presence of Wagner fighters in the neighbouring country.&nbsp;

<h2>Polish PM’s warning</h2>

Morawiecki warned that the Wagner fighters – who are living in exile in Belarus after their chief Yevgeny Prigozhin aborted a mutiny in Russia – may engage in what Poland describes as “hybrid warfare,” where the Russian group's fighters&nbsp;in Belarus could facilitate illegal migration from Belarus, said the Polish PM. &nbsp;

The fighters could pose as migrants from the city of Grodno, close to the Polish and Lithuanian borders, and enter the European Union, said Morawiecki. Poland, a former Warsaw Pact member and now a member of the United States-led NATO military alliance, has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022.&nbsp;

However, Warsaw has also expressed concerns about the possible spillover of the Ukraine war onto its territory.&nbsp;

“The situation is getting increasingly dangerous...Most likely they (the Wagner personnel) will be disguised as the Belarusian border guard and help illegal migrants get to the Polish territory (and) destabilise Poland,” said Morawiecki&nbsp;during a press conference in western Poland.

“This is certainly a step towards a further hybrid attack on Polish territory,” he added. Notably, the Polish PM did not give a source of information that Wagner fighters were moving closer to Grodno.&nbsp;

However, given the location of the city, it may be potentially significant as it is near the Suwalki Gap, a strategic strip of 95 kilometres of land along the Polish-Lithuanian border, which divides Belarus, Russia’s ally, from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, on Saturday (July 29) said that a group of a hundred soldiers from Russia’s Wagner mercenary group have moved closer to the Belarusian city of Grodno near the Polish border.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, on Saturday (July 29) said that a group of a hundred soldiers from Russia’s Wagner mercenary group have moved closer to the Belarusian city of Grodno near the Polish border. This comes weeks after Poland’s defence minister said that they are moving more than 1,000 troops to the east of the country amid concerns over the presence of Wagner fighters in the neighbouring country. Polish PM’s warning Morawiecki warned that the Wagner fighters – who are living in exile in Belarus after their chief Yevgeny Prigozhin aborted a mutiny in Russia – may engage in what Poland describes as “hybrid warfare,” where the Russian group's fighters in Belarus could facilitate illegal migration from Belarus, said the Polish PM. The fighters could pose as migrants from the city of Grodno, close to the Polish and Lithuanian borders, and enter the European Union, said Morawiecki. Poland, a former Warsaw Pact member and now a member of the United States-led NATO military alliance, has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022. However, Warsaw has also expressed concerns about the possible spillover of the Ukraine war onto its territory. ALSO READ | Will Ukraine war expand to other regions? Poland moving troops over Wagner risk from Belarus “The situation is getting increasingly dangerous...Most likely they (the Wagner personnel) will be disguised as the Belarusian border guard and help illegal migrants get to the Polish territory (and) destabilise Poland,” said Morawiecki during a press conference in western Poland. “This is certainly a step towards a further hybrid attack on Polish territory,” he added. Notably, the Polish PM did not give a source of information that Wagner fighters were moving closer to Grodno. However, given the location of the city, it may be potentially significant as it is near the Suwalki Gap, a strategic strip of 95 kilometres of land along the Polish-Lithuanian border, which divides Belarus, Russia’s ally, from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. According to Morawiecki, there have been 16,000 attempts to cross the border between Belarus and Poland so far this year. Wagner fighters move closer to Poland border, could pose as migrants to enter EU, warns Polish PM

The wagner chief has reappeared in Belarus. Meanwhile, Wagner mercenaries were seen training near the Polish border. What is the group up to? Priyanka Sharma reports.

Gravitas: Why are Wagner mercenaries training near Poland?

A recent video from Belarus shows Wagner group mercenaries being trained over the border. Poland, a NATO member, is only a few miles away. To understand this better watch this interview with Defence Expert, Sergej Summleny.

Polish villages in fear as Wagner conducts drills near border

Belarus has released a video showing Wagner group mercenaries training with its Special Forces. This is just a few miles from the border with NATO member Poland. Wagner Fighters and the leaders were relocated to Belarus following a failed Mutiny against Russia's top military brass.

Wagner fighters train with Belarus forces

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday (July 21) issued a stern warning to Poland saying that it would treat any “aggression” against its ally Belarus as an attack on his own country.

Putin’s remarks came following Poland’s move to enhance security on its own border in response to Wagner mercenary forces’ presence in its neighbour Belarus.

“Aggression against Belarus will mean aggression against the Russian Federation,” Putin said in televised comments during a Security Council meeting.

“We will respond to this with all the means at our disposal,” he said, referring to the so-called Union State between Belarus and Russia.

<h2>'Ukraine's counteroffensive unsuccessful'</h2>

Speaking about Ukraine’s much-touted counteroffensive Putin claimed that despite getting financial and military help from the West, Kyiv has been unable to gain desired results.

“In any case, there are no results yet," Putin said of the counteroffensive.

“Neither the colossal resources that have been pumped into the Kyiv regime nor the supplies of Western weapons, tanks, artillery, armoured vehicles and missiles are helping," he added.

Putin said the diminishing number of Western tanks, artillery, armored vehicles and missiles supplied to Ukraine, as well as “thousands of foreign mercenaries and advisers,” have not helped Kyiv achieve military objectives, Moscow Times reported

The Russian president further claimed that “tens of thousands” of Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and wounded, though he did not provide any evidence to support to his claim.

<h2>Ukraine’s sluggish counteroffensive</h2>

Ukraine has claimed to have recaptured 300 square kilometres of occupied areas as part of their summer counteroffensive.

But by their own admission, their counter-operation has so far been sluggish.

This week, the commander of Ukraine's ground forces admitted that the battlefield situation in eastern Ukraine was “complicated.”

In June, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted that &nbsp;counteroffensive may be going “slower than desired” but insisted that he will not needlessly risk soldiers’ lives to meet international expectations.

Again on July 6, Zelensky claimed that delayed deliveries of weapons from the West has impacted Ukraine’s &nbsp;counteroffensive.

Speaking to CNN, Zelensky revealed that he had sought to begin the counteroffensive against Russia "much earlier". The counteroffensive started in early June.

Our slowed-down counteroffensive is happening due to certain difficulties in the battlefield. Everything is heavily mined there," Zelensky said.

“I wanted our counteroffensive happening much earlier, because everyone understood that if the counteroffensive will be unfolding later, then much bigger part of our territory will be mined,” the Ukrainian leader added.

Plane crash in Poland: Five killed after aircraft collides with hangar

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that Poland has become the first country to report a high number of cats infected with bird flu across a wide area. Despite this development, the risk of human infection remains low. Polish health authorities informed the WHO about a month ago regarding unusual cat deaths occurring throughout the country, reported AFP news agency.

Following their investigation, it was found that 29 cats tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus. A total of 46 cats and one captive caracal were tested for the virus. Among the infected animals, 14 were euthanized, and 11 others died. The most recent death was reported on June 30.

<h2>Source of infection unknown</h2>

The exact source of the cats' exposure to the virus remains unknown&nbsp;and a probe is on.

"The source of the exposure of cats to the virus is currently unknown and epizootic investigations are ongoing," WHO said in a statement.

Europe has been experiencing its worst-ever outbreak of bird flu since late 2021, with severe outbreaks also reported in North and South America.

This has led to the culling of tens of millions of poultry worldwide, with many carrying the H5N1 strain of the virus, which was first identified in 1996. Recently, there has been a concerning increase in infections among mammals.

<h2>Unprecedented number of infected cats</h2>

While sporadic cases of H5N1 infections in cats have been reported before, the current situation in Poland is the first time such a&nbsp;high number of infected cats has been observed over a wide geographical area within a single country.

The risk of human infection following exposure to infected cats has been assessed as low for the general population in Poland. However, for individuals such as cat owners, veterinarians, and others who are regularly exposed to H5N1-infected cats without using personal protective equipment, the risk is considered low to moderate.

<h2>Human bird flu cases</h2>

Human infections of bird flu are rare but can cause severe disease with a high mortality rate when they occur. Most cases are the result of direct or indirect exposure to infected live or dead poultry or contaminated environments. The WHO has received 12 reports of human H5N1 cases worldwide since 2020, with four being severe cases and eight mild or asymptomatic cases.

'Unusual cat deaths' in Poland attributed to bird flu: WHO

Wagner group's fighters have reached Belarus from Russia, confirmed Ukrainian and Polish officials on Saturday, one day after Minsk stated that the mercenaries were training the soldiers of the country in the southeast of the capital.

"Wagner is in Belarus," said Andriy Demchenko, a spokesman for the Ukrainian border agency, shared in a statement on the Telegram messaging app. He stated that the officials have observed in Belarus the movement of "separate groups" from Russia.

Since Tuesday, some Wagner fighters were already present in Belarus, two sources close to the fighters confirmed to news agency Reuters.

A video was released by the Belarusian defence ministry on Friday which showed what it stated were Wagner fighters providing training to Belarusian soldiers at a military range which was located close to the town of Osipovichi.

The move of Wagner to Belarus was part of the deal which was finalised to end the mutiny attempt of the group in June – when they had captured a Russian military headquarter, were marching towards Moscow and threatening to start a civil war in Russia, as stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was not seen in public since he departed from the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don on June 24.

Poland's Deputy Minister Co-ordinator of Special Services Stanislaw Zaryn stated that the presence of Wagner fighters in Belarus has also been confirmed by Wagner fighters.

"There may be several hundred of them at the moment," stated Zaryn on Twitter. This month, Poland stated that it was bolstering its border with Belarus to prevent any potential threats.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who did not make his&nbsp;own troops available to Russia, permitted Moscow to use its territory to launch its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since this, Belarus has allowed its country to be used as a base for Russian nuclear weapons.

The Belarusian Hajun project, which is responsible for monitoring military activity in the country and is seen as an extremist formation by Belarusian authorities, said that on Friday night a large column of at least 60 vehicles entered the country from Russia.

It stated that the vehicles, which included trucks, pickups, vans and buses, carried licence plates of the self-styled Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, which is internationally recognised as eastern Ukraine.

At least 60 vehicles enter Belarus Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who did not make his own troops available to Russia, permitted Moscow to use its territory to launch its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since this, Belarus has allowed its country to be used as a base for Russian nuclear weapons. It stated that the vehicles, which included trucks, pickups, vans and buses, carried licence plates of the self-styled Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, which is internationally recognised as eastern Ukraine. Wagner fighters have reached Belarus, confirm Ukraine, Poland

A Ukrainian defence official, on Sunday (July 9), seemingly revealed that the country’s forces attacked the bridge connecting Russia and Russian-occupied Crimea, last year. Meanwhile, Russian officials claimed that their air defence systems shot down two missiles, one over the annexed Crimean peninsula and the other one over the southern Rostov region which borders Ukraine.&nbsp;

This also comes amid the Polish president’s visit to Ukraine to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart.&nbsp;

<h2>Did Ukraine claim responsibility for Crimea bridge blast?</h2>

In what might be the first direct admission of Ukraine’s involvement in the blast which damaged Russia’s only land link to Crimea (annexed by Moscow in 2014), Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar in a Telegram post, said, “(It’s been) 273 days since (we) carried out the first strike on the Crimean bridge in order to disrupt the logistics for the Russians”.&nbsp;

The post, on Saturday, also noted some other Ukrainian successes amid the ongoing conflict, including the sinking of the Moskva cruiser, which the Russian officials have refused to attribute to a Ukrainian attack, as well as the liberation of Snake Island.&nbsp;

The Kerch Bridge blast took place in October 2022 and was inaugurated by President Vladimir Putin&nbsp;in 2018&nbsp;and is seen as a vital transport link carrying military equipment to Russian soldiers in Ukraine.&nbsp;

Officials in Moscow had determined that the blast took place after a vehicle had exploded and ignited a huge fire, setting ablaze seven oil tankers transported by train and collapsing two car lanes of the giant road and rail structure.

The Ukrainian defence official’s statement also caught the attention of Russian state media and officials. Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, in response, once again called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government a “terrorist regime” and condemned the attack, in an online statement.&nbsp;

<h2>Russia claims to have intercepted missiles over Crimea and Rostov region</h2>

Russia-installed Governor Sergei Aksyonov took to Telegram, on Sunday, and said that a cruise missile was shot down near the city of Kerch on the Crimean peninsula but did not inflict any damage or cause casualties.&nbsp;

Additionally, local officials also reported some disruption in the traffic movement on the Crimean Bridge but said it was restored after an apparent suspension. However, they did not give any reason for the traffic halt.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Russian Governor Vasily Golubev also took to Telegram and said the air defence shot down a Ukrainian missile in the Rostov region which is close to the Ukrainian border. “There were no casualties. The debris partially damaged the roofs of several buildings,” said Golubev.&nbsp;

<h2>Polish president’s visit to Ukraine&nbsp;</h2>

Polish President Andrzej Duda took to social media, on Sunday, and wrote, “We are stronger together,” while visiting the western city of Lutsk with his Ukrainian counterpart, on Sunday. The visit comes ahead of the NATO summit on July 11-12 where Kyiv is expecting a clear indication about being a part of the United States-led military alliance.&nbsp;

Notably, Poland has been one of the biggest supporters of Ukraine within NATO since the beginning of the conflict over a year ago and asked for “security guarantees” from other members of the alliance for Kyiv.

<h2>Poland increases security along eastern border</h2>

The Polish president’s visit to Ukraine comes a day after the country’s defence minister said that they are moving more than 1,000 troops to the east of the country amid concerns over the presence of Russia’s Wagner Group fighters in neighbouring Belarus.

“Over 1,000 soldiers and almost 200 units of equipment from the 12th and 17th Mechanized Brigades are starting to move to the east of the country,” said Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak. He added, “This is a demonstration of our readiness to respond to attempts at destabilisation near the border of our country.”&nbsp;

The move also comes nearly a week after Warsaw said it would send 500 police officers to its border with Belarus to secure its border amid an increase in the number of migrants trying to cross into the country from Minsk.&nbsp;

Over 200 people tried to enter Poland illegally, on Friday,&nbsp;including citizens of Morocco, India and Ethiopia, according to&nbsp;the Border Guard.
