Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk&nbsp;said in an interview that Europe is entering a ‘pre-war’ era and that the European Union (EU) urgently needs to step up its defence investment. Tusk in an interview given to a group of European newspapers said, "I don’t want to scare anyone, but war is no longer a concept from the past. It’s real and it started over two years ago."

“The most worrying thing at the moment is that literally any scenario is possible. We haven’t seen a situation like this since 1945,” he added. “I know it sounds devastating, especially for the younger generation, but we have to get used to the fact that a new era has begun: the pre-war era. I’m not exaggerating; it’s becoming clearer every day,” the PM added.

<h2>Poland on high alert</h2>

Tusk’s comments came a day after the Russian forces launched a major attack on Ukraine, during which a Russian missile briefly violated Polish airspace. The incident prompted Warsaw to put its forces on high alert.

Ukraine said Russia’s military offensive was “large scale” and targeted energy infrastructure.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine two years ago, EU nations have grown concerned about the possibility of the war spilling into NATO countries, a scenario dismissed by the Kremlin.

Russia on Sunday (Mar 24)&nbsp;launched an aerial assault on&nbsp;Ukraine's capital Kyiv and the western region of Lviv, AFP reported citing&nbsp;officials, prompting&nbsp;Poland, a NATO member to deploy its jets.&nbsp;

"Explosions in the capital. Air defence is working. Do not leave shelters," Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko posted on Telegram. Lviv regional governor&nbsp;Maksym Kozytskyi said Stryi district, south of the city of Lviv, was also under attack.

The assault&nbsp;comes as Russia mourns the tragic terrorist attack on the Moscow concert hall and blames Ukraine for it.

Ukraine's&nbsp;air defence forces destroyed about a dozen of Russia-launched missiles, said&nbsp;Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv's military administration, on&nbsp;Telegram.&nbsp;Preliminary information showed no casualties or major damage as a result of the attacks, he added.

Polish armed forces said that they were on high alert due to "intensive long-range aviation activity" of Russia and the missile attacks in Ukraine.&nbsp;

It later reported that Russia had violated Poland's&nbsp;airspace with a cruise missile which "entered Polish space near the town of Oserdow (Lublin Voivodeship) and stayed there for 39 seconds."

The missile, according to Polish officials,&nbsp;penetrated the country's&nbsp;airspace by around 1,000-2,000 metres.&nbsp;

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said on Friday (Mar 8) that the presence of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) troops in war-torn Ukraine was "not unthinkable," adding he appreciated French President Emmanuel Macron's initiative for not ruling out the idea. In a post on X, the foreign ministry said that Sikorski made this observation during a discussion marking the 25th anniversary of Poland’s accession to NATO in the Polish parliament.

Sikorski said he appreciated Macron's initiative “because it is about Putin being afraid, not us being afraid of Putin.” In February, Macron said that the possibility of Western troops being sent to Ukraine could not be ruled out, a comment that broke a taboo among allies and prompted an outcry from other leaders.

According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, French officials later sought to clarify Macron’s remarks and tamp down the backlash, while insisting on the need to send a clear signal to Russia that it cannot win its war in Ukraine.

Russia had warned that if NATO sends combat troops, a direct conflict between the intergovernmental military alliance and Moscow would be inevitable. Russian President Vladimir Putin said such a move would risk a global nuclear war.&nbsp;

Poland is set to receive access to a total of 137 billion euros ($148 billion) in European Union funds, as the new government in Warsaw initiates reforms aimed at restoring judicial independence, according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The release of these funds fulfills a campaign promise made by Prime Minister Donald Tusk's pro-European coalition government, providing a much-needed economic boost.

The funds come at a critical time for Poland, grappling with the economic repercussions of the war in Ukraine and facing challenges due to the weakness of its major trading partner, Germany.

Top 10 world news: Poland claims Russian missile entered airspace, China gets new defence minister, and more

The Polish Army on Friday (Dec 29) claimed that a Russian missile passed through the country's airspace as Moscow launched its biggest aerial attack on Ukraine since the war began in February last year.&nbsp;

General Wieslaw Kukula, chief of the general staff of the Polish armed forces confirmed that the missile briefly entered the Polish airspace before getting redirected towards Ukraine.&nbsp;

"Everything indicates that a Russian missile entered Polish airspace. It also left our airspace.&nbsp;We have national and allied radar confirmation,"&nbsp;Kukula told reporters.&nbsp;

Although the missile was in Polish airspace for only three minutes, it was sufficient for the army to&nbsp;raise its defence preparedness. According to&nbsp;armed forces spokesman Jacek Goryszewski, the jets were scrambled in the direction of the missile in response to the violation of the airspace.&nbsp;

"We sent our forces, fighter jets, to intercept it and shoot it down if necessary but the duration and the flight path... made this impossible and allowed the missile to leave Polish territory," said Maciej Klisz, the operational commander of the Polish army.&nbsp;

According to&nbsp;Klisz, the Polish air defence systems were put on alert soon after Russia launched a mega drone and missile onslaught on Ukraine, earlier in the day.&nbsp;

After the intrusion,&nbsp;Polish President Andrzej Duda dialled NATO chief Jen Stoltenberg and had a conversation over the incident.&nbsp;

Poland liquidates all public media ahead of restructuring

Poland's Culture Ministry announced the suspension of a public news channel on Wednesday (Dec 20), along with the removal of executives from state media, citing the need to restore "impartiality" as a cornerstone of new Prime Minister Donald Tusk's reform agenda.

With this, a war of words has erupted between Tusk's Civic Platform, the largest party in the ruling government, and the Law and Justice (PiS) party, as the new government took decisive action to reform the media landscape in the country that has been touted as a mouthpiece for PiS.&nbsp;

Donald Tusk's return to power after nine years, securing parliamentary support for his government, is seeing a political shift.&nbsp;Tusk's reform plans encountered immediate resistance from the PiS, as dismissals at state television (TVP), radio, and news agency PAP unfolded in the wake of a parliamentary resolution calling for the restoration of public media impartiality.

PiS strongly criticised the moves, with some politicians appearing at state broadcaster TVP headquarters, prompting police intervention.

Protesters also gathered outside TVP offices in various cities.

Tusk is a former European Council president who served in the position from 2014 to 2019. His pro-European Union coalition replaced the nationalist PiS party, which critics argue had undermined judicial independence and exploited state-owned media for propaganda during its eight-year tenure.

The state-run 24-hour news channel TVP Info, known for its criticism of Tusk, was taken off air. Reacting to this, Civic Platform said on the social media platform, "The end of TVPiS."

<h2>Tusk pledges balanced media&nbsp;</h2>

The government pledged to establish stations with a more balanced approach to public service broadcasting.

Supporters of TVP Info argued that shutting it down would diminish pluralism by silencing a conservative voice aligned with PiS's stance on EU migration debates.

With this, a war of words has erupted between Tusk's Civic Platform, the largest party in the ruling government, and the Law and Justice (PiS) party, as the new government took decisive action to reform the media landscape in the country that has been touted as a mouthpiece for PiS. Donald Tusk's return to power after nine years, securing parliamentary support for his government, is seeing a political shift. Tusk's reform plans encountered immediate resistance from the PiS, as dismissals at state television (TVP), radio, and news agency PAP unfolded in the wake of a parliamentary resolution calling for the restoration of public media impartiality. New Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government was sworn in by Poland's president on Wednesday, the final step in a transfer of power that marks a huge change after eight years of nationalist rule.

Following years of disputes between Warsaw and Brussels under the previous government, led by the Law and Justice (PiS) party, Tusk's appointment has raised hopes of smoother relations with the rest of the European Union.

In a speech to parliament on Tuesday, centrist Tusk, who as European Council president from 2014 to 2019 chaired summits of EU leaders, vowed to secure billions of euros for Poland that have been frozen by the EU over concerns about the rule of law.

His task could be complicated by judges appointed under PiS reforms that critics said undermined the independence of the courts and by the power to veto laws held by President Andrzej Duda, a PiS ally.

Duda has previously spoken in highly critical terms about Tusk, but on Wednesday he struck a conciliatory tone following the swearing-in ceremony.

"Please be aware that I am open to cooperation," he said. "We come from different political camps, but I have found out that on important issues, such as security, we can come to an understanding."

Tusk, 66, said his government would focus on restoring the rule of law and respect for the constitution, and his government holds Duda partly responsible for reforms that it says undermined judicial independence.

"Faithfulness to the provisions of the constitution will be the trademark of our government," Tusk said, adding that he thought voters' desire to see the rule of law re-established was behind record turnout in an Oct. 15 election.

<h2>Challenges ahead</h2>

PiS came first in the election but lacked the necessary majority to form a government, paving the way for Tusk to form a government which won parliament's approval on Tuesday.

In an example of the challenges Tusk will face, Poland's Constitutional Tribunal ruled on Monday that judicial reform legislation which Poland needed to pass to access EU funds was unconstitutional.

It reached the same conclusion about penalties imposed by the EU's top court before it reaches a final ruling, known as interim measures.

Last-minute spending by the previous government has also added to strains on the budget, complicating Tusk's efforts to deliver on campaign pledges.

Tusk is expected to travel to Brussels for an EU summit that takes place on Thursday and Friday.

In addition to trying to unblock funds for Poland, Tusk will add his support to Ukraine's bid to eventually join the bloc.

With concerns growing in Kyiv about its Western allies' commitment to funding its defence against Russia's invasion, Tusk said on Tuesday that Poland would advocate for continued support.

Ukraine faces the possibility that Hungary will not give the green light for it to start EU accession talks at a Brussels summit.

Donald Tusk, former European Council president, sworn in as Poland's new prime minister

Poland's incumbent prime minister on Monday lost a vote of confidence making way for Donald Tusk's coalition of pro-European Union parties to take power.

The vote marked the conclusion of an eight-year-tenure of nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party, which as per the critics vandalised judicial independence, turned state-owned media into a propaganda outlet and instigated prejudice against minorities such as immigrants and the LGBT community.

Out of the 456 members of parliament who cast their votes, 266 voted no confidence in Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.&nbsp;

He had the backing of 190 lawmakers.

"We are saying goodbye to PiS ... history is being made," Monika Rosa, a lawmaker from Tusk's Civic Coalition (KO) grouping wrote on social media platform X.

PiS, during its tenure, had claimed to safeguard Poland's sovereignty and traditions from foreign interference, while also improving the living standards for millions of Poles by introducing social benefits and raising the minimum wage.&nbsp;

Morawiecki, presenting his general programme in the parliament on Monday, said that he was sure that the "project" PiS had for Poland "must win and will win".

"We introduced a new socio-economic model - the first steps in creating a country of solidarity," Morawiecki said.

He also underlined how he projects the ties with the European Union should look like.

"Maybe not yet today, not in this chamber," Morawiecki conceded, referring to a confidence vote scheduled for the afternoon that he is set to lose.&nbsp;

President Andrzej Duda, who is an ally of the outgoing government, provided PiS with the first attempt at forming a government, but the fact that it lacked a majority and all the other parties had ruled out working with it made this impossible.

Tennis: Hubert Hurkacz wins over Sebastian Korda in Shanghai masters final

Poland's liberal opposition parties reached a coalition agreement on Friday (Nov 10), stating that this would act as a "roadmap" for the fresh alliance if given a chance to take power.

Donald Tusk, the opposition's candidate for prime minister said that in the coming years, they were ready to take the responsibility of the country.

"We really wanted Polish women and men who went to vote with such hope to see that... from now on, we are ready to take responsibility for our homeland and for the coming years," Tusk told reporters.

Tusk, a leader of the liberal Civic Coalition main opposition bloc, spoke alongside his counterparts from the centrist Third Way and the Left.

"When I look at you all, you sort of remind me of the Avengers with superpowers," said Left co-head Robert Biedron, referring to the comic book team of superheroes.&nbsp;

<h2>'Series of pledges'</h2>

As per news agency Reuters reports, the parties made a series of pledges in the document which included the restoration of transparency of the public finances and depoliticisation of state-owned companies.

The deal also stated that the coalition would overturn a 2020 Constitutional Tribunal ruling that imposed a near-total ban on abortion.

The issue related to abortion is highly sensitive considering the presence of both Catholic social conservatives and left-wingers in an alliance.

"Everything cannot be reduced to one denominator," said Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, leader of the centre-right Polish Peasants' Party (PSL), which contested the election as part of a coalition called Third Way.

"In our agreement, we found a common denominator for the issues we want to implement. They concern support for families, employees, entrepreneurs, the Polish countryside, education, health care and women's rights."

<h2>Roles as per new agreement</h2>

As per the agreement signed, Kosiniak-Kamysz will serve as deputy prime minister, as will Krzystof Gawkowski from the New Left.

The position of parliament speaker will be shared between Third Way's Szymon Holownia and the New left's Wlodzimierz Czarzasty with each taking up the role for two years respectively.

President Andrzej Duda has provided the ruling nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party with the first move at constructing a government. However, PiS lacks a majority and with all the other parties having refused to work with it, its job seems next to impossible.

If Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki does not win a vote of confidence, parliament will appoint another government.

Tusk, former prime minister and ex-head of the European Council, has accused Duda of "playing for time" in selecting Morawiecki.

An ally of President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday (Nov 2) that Poland, a NATO member state, was now considered a dangerous enemy by Russia and could end up losing its statehood if it continued on its current course.

An ally of President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday (Nov 2) that Poland, a NATO member state, was now considered a dangerous enemy by Russia and could end up losing its statehood if it continued on its current course. Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president, made this remark in an article on Russia-Poland relations, the news agency Reuters reported. Medvedev, now the deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, said in the article that Moscow would treat Poland precisely as a historical enemy. "If there is no hope for reconciliation with the enemy, Russia should have only one and a very tough attitude regarding its fate," Medvedev said. "History has more than once delivered a merciless verdict to the presumptuous Poles: no matter how ambitious the revanchist plans may be, their collapse could lead to the death of Polish statehood in its entirety," he added. Poland slams Medvedev's warning Stanisław Żaryn, a Polish security official, slammed Medvedev's warning and told the PAP news agency that Russian leaders had been stoking hatred towards Poland for many years. Kilka słów komentarza o ost. ataku propagandowym D. Miedwiediewa na Polskę, a także szerszym kontekście. Kreml próbuje wymusić na Zachodzie zgodę na reset i wznowienie relacji. Polska mu w tym przeszkadza, więc jest - i będzie - atakowana.https://t.co/OAFkNOkYQR — Stanisław Żaryn (@StZaryn) November 3, 2023 × Żaryn said that Medvedev's article was full of hatred and threats against Poland and NATO and typical of Krelmin's propaganda. The official told PAP Medvedev “repeated the main lies propagated against Poland.” His article proved that Moscow was aware of Warsaw's role in significantly reducing Russia’s influence in Europe in recent years. Russia was also seeking to pressure Europe into resuming political and economic cooperation with Russia, while Poland was blocking such an operation which sparked aggression from the Kremlin. Russia's ongoing offensive in Ukraine has further strained the relations between Moscow and Warsaw. Poland has backed Ukraine since the beginning of the war in February last year, providing Kyiv with weapons, and financial and humanitarian aid worth around $4.5 billion. (With inputs from agencies)
