United States President Joe Biden told other NATO members present at the G20 Summit in Indonesia that the missile that killed two people in Poland was an air defence missile from Ukraine, according to a NATO source. Reuters reported that Biden was informed by his sources about the missile and that is why he publicly said that it is unlikely that the missile was launched by Russia.

"There is preliminary information that contests that. I don't want to say that until we completely investigate it, but it is unlikely in the lines of the trajectory that it was fired from Russia, but we’ll see," Biden said when asked about the attack in Poland, according to Associated Press.

On Tuesday, a new report released by the European parliament painted a grim picture of the European Union democracy by detailing the increasing use of mercenary spyware, Pegasus. In the past 18 months, four EU countries — Hungary, Poland, Spain and Greece have been accused of using spyware or equivalent technology against their citizens.

Reports suggest that the software developed by the Israeli-based company NSO Group, Pegasus, and its less sophisticated version, Predator are some of the most well-known brands in Europe. Once this spyware infiltrates a device it can extract data and allow real-time surveillance, find passwords, track location and even activate its camera or microphone to gather information about its owner.

While the company claims that this software was designed to fight crime and terrorism, investigators have found that it is being used to snoop on journalists, activists, dissents as well as politicians across the world.

Speaking at a press conference, Dutch EU lawmaker Sophie in 't Veld presented the draft version of the report and said that in countries like Poland and Hungary the use of such spyware is an “integral element” of a system that is designed to “control and even oppress the citizens” which often include “critics of the government, opposition, journalists, whistleblowers.”

In some cases, the spyware also leads to illegitimate surveillance which is often based on vague justifications while the exemption of national security is repeatedly invoked in order to dodge accountability as well as maintain secrecy. In this context, the report says, the “rule of law turns into law of the ruler.”

The liberal lawmaker who acted as rapporteur said that her team was forced to rely on publicly available resources as the EU governments refused to cooperate, “The spyware scandal is not a series of isolated national cases of abuse, but a full-blown European affair,” said the report.

Furthermore, in addition to the four aforementioned countries, the report also puts Cyprus under suspicion for the use of spyware. While Poland and Hungary have witnessed at least over a dozen cases of journalists and political opponents being illegally targeted, Greece has also been caught amid an escalating espionage scandal.

According to a separate report by Politico, at least 33 people in Greece including the phones of journalists, business people and lawmakers of the conservative New Democracy government, their families as well as the politicians of the main opposition Syriza party, had traces of the illegal spyware Predator on their devices.

Meanwhile, in Spain, the spyware was detected on Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s phone and the devices of several other national ministers as well as Catalan lawmakers, lawyers and civil society organisations. Earlier this year, a number of Catalan lawmakers had alleged that Spain’s intelligence authorities had used Pegasus software to hack their phones.

The fallout of the Pegasus scandal also resulted in the ouster of Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles, earlier this year. Meanwhile, in Greece, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was forced to issue an apology as well as announced the plans to ban the spyware technology amid mounting pressure.

Similarly, the Dutch EU lawmaker has also called for an immediate suspension of such spyware until proper regulation measures are in place. She also claimed that all 27 EU countries have spyware at their disposal even if they refused to admit it. The report alleges that countries like Cyprus and Bulgaria have acted as export hubs for this spyware.

“Europe has been the hub for exports to dictatorships and oppressive regimes, such as Libya, Egypt and Bangladesh,” said the report. During the conference, 't Veld also acknowledged that these findings were largely based on the work of journalists and investigators and not confirmed by governments.

Pegasus spyware scandal becomes a ‘full-blown European Union affair’: Report

Outrage built in Poland over the weekend after the ruling party leader, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, was accused of being out of touch following his remarks made on Saturday which partly blamed the country's low birth rate on young women drinking too much alcohol.

“If, for example, the situation remains such that, until the age of 25, girls, young women, drink the same amount as their peers, there will be no children,” said the 73-year-old politician. He also claimed that for an average man to become an alcoholic, he would have to “drink excessively for 20 years” but “a woman only two.”

These remarks have since drawn widespread criticism from opposition politicians, activists as well as celebrities some of whom have in turn partly blamed the leader of the ruling party, Law and Justice, and his policies.

This includes increased restrictions on abortion which have discouraged some women who sought to have children, while others have reportedly cited difficulties in raising a family amid Poland’s soaring inflation which is reaching nearly 18%.

On Monday, leftwing politician Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus, while speaking to the reporters called Kaczynski “a patriarchal old geezer” and said we could laugh and joke about this but “it’s a serious, tragic matter.” While a lawmaker with the liberal Civic Coalition (KO), Katarzyna Lubnauer, called the 73-year-old “out of touch” and dubbed his remarks nonsensical and “insulting to women”.

Meanwhile, Women's Strike, a rights group in Poland, said that there are many reasons for the country's low birthrate, including its de facto prohibition of abortion, lack of access to sexual education and in vitro procedures, inflation, housing shortage and so on. He also claimed that for an average man to become an alcoholic, he would have to “drink excessively for 20 years” but “a woman only two.” ALSO READ: Poland marches against abortion law after pregnant woman dies in hospital for want of care These remarks have since drawn widespread criticism from opposition politicians, activists as well as celebrities some of whom have in turn partly blamed the leader of the ruling party, Law and Justice, and his policies. This includes increased restrictions on abortion which have discouraged some women who sought to have children, while others have reportedly cited difficulties in raising a family amid Poland’s soaring inflation which is reaching nearly 18%. ALSO WATCH: Poland : Protests erupt over abortion law On Monday, leftwing politician Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus, while speaking to the reporters called Kaczynski “a patriarchal old geezer” and said we could laugh and joke about this but “it’s a serious, tragic matter.” While a lawmaker with the liberal Civic Coalition (KO), Katarzyna Lubnauer, called the 73-year-old “out of touch” and dubbed his remarks nonsensical and “insulting to women”. Meanwhile, Women's Strike, a rights group in Poland, said that there are many reasons for the country's low birthrate, including its de facto prohibition of abortion, lack of access to sexual education and in vitro procedures, inflation, housing shortage and so on. Poland: Politician blames low birthrate on young women drinking alcohol, sparks outrage

Polish soldiers were seen deploying a razor wire fence on Poland's border with Russian exclave Kaliningrad. The move follows an announcement by the country's Defence Minister.

Why is Poland sealing its border with Russian exclave Kaliningrad?

Poland's defence minister on Wednesday (November 3) said that orders have been given to the authorities to construct a razor-wire fence on its border with Russian exclave Kaliningrad. The report about the construction of a wall come amid concerns that the exclave might become a channel for illegal migration in Poland.

In Kaliningrad, Russia has a significant military presence which is a tension for entire Europe, especially amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The exclave is located on the Baltic coast between Poland and Lithuania. It is separated from Belarus by a border corridor.

Mariusz Blaszczak, the defence minister of the country, said at a news conference that the construction of the temporary 2.5-metre high and three-metre deep barrier will start immediately. He also added that it will be similar to the border that Poland set up along with Belarus last year.

Blaszczak mentioned that the tensions are escalating over a decision by Russia's aviation authority announced recently to launch flights from the Middle East and North Africa to Kaliningrad.

Last month, Russia Briefing, an online business magazine, reposted that Kaliningrad might attract airlines from the Gulf and Asia under a new open skies policy.

The defence minister noted that measures such as the construction of a wall would strengthen security "by sealing this border."

Warsaw, Seoul ink deal to develop nuclear power plant in Poland

Poland's first nuclear power station will be built by United States company Westinghouse Electric Co, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced on Friday, confirming a long-awaited decision to cut the nation's carbon emissions and phase out coal.

Poland's selection of a partner from the United States highlights the importance Warsaw places on relations with Washington at a time when its security is in the focus as Russia is waging war in neighbouring Ukraine.

"We confirm our nuclear energy project will use the reliable, safe technology of @WECNuclear," Morawiecki said on Twitter.

State-owned Korea Hydro Nuclear Power of South Korea, which filed an offer in April, was Westinghouse's rival. Additionally, Warsaw was discussing the project with French businesses.

"U.S. partnership on this project is advantageous for us all: we can address the climate crisis, strengthen European energy security, and deepen the U.S.-Poland strategic relationship," Vice President Kamala Harris said in a tweet.

Together with Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, Harris attempted to assist Westinghouse in obtaining the deal, speaking with Morawiecki multiple times during the previous year, a White House official said. The official claimed that the initiative will generate thousands of jobs for Americans.

Poland, Bulgaria urge citizens to leave Russia

Pink Floyd's Roger Waters lashed out on Sunday after two upcoming concerts in Krakow in Poland were scrapped following criticism from city councillors over his stance on the war in Ukraine.

The city council is scheduled to debate a motion this week that would declare Waters a "persona non grata" and one councillor, Lukasz Wantuch, had urged city residents to boycott the Waters concerts.

Waters wrote an open letter earlier this month saying the West should stop providing arms to Ukraine, accusing President Volodymyr Zelensky of allowing "extreme nationalism" in Ukraine and urging him to "put an end to this deadly war".

Live Nation Polska said on Twitter on Saturday that the concerts, which had been scheduled for April next year at the city's Tauron Arena, had been "cancelled" but did not give any more details.

Waters on Facebook denied Polish media reports that his team had pulled out but criticised Wantuch, accusing him of "draconian censoring of my work".

"Lukasz Wantuch seems to know nothing of my history of working, all my life, at some personal cost, in the service of human rights," Waters said.

Paraphrasing the words of his hit single "Another Brick in the Wall", Waters also wrote: "Hey! Lukasz Wantuch! 'Leave them Kids Alone!'".

He said he had only wanted to urge the countries involved "to work towards a negotiated peace rather than escalate matters towards a bitter end".
