Gravitas: Poland wants Germany to pay $1.3 trillion

Poland's Ambassador to India Adam Burakowski has called on New Delhi to convince Moscow that the ongoing war doesn't benefit the country.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February, impacting Europe’s frontline states like Poland, which have been inundated by refugees. Poland, which borders Ukraine, has played a key role in providing humanitarian assistance to those fleeing the country.

Speaking to a group of journalists, ambassador Burakowski said, "India can talk to the other side and convince them that this war is also not in the benefit of Russia. I mean, Russia, doesn't benefit from this war, and Russia can stop this war by withdrawing troops from occupied territories of Ukraine."

India and Russia have close and historical ties, with defence and now energy being the main pillars of the relationship.

The ambassador pointed out that India's foreign policy is of "neutrality, which means, India talks to everyone". Further explaining, he said, "India has dialogue with other countries, there is need of a dialogue and since India has this special relationship with Russia, why not."

Poland foreign minister Zbigniew Rau was in Delhi earlier this year for the Raisina Dialogue and held talks with India's external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar.

Poland played a key role in the evacuation of Indians, mostly students from Ukraine, when the invasion started. The country helped in the evacuation of around 6,000 Indians and even announced a visa waiver for them as they fled Ukraine.

The ambassador said, "Operation Ganga was an example of good cooperation between India and Poland. Poland provided the possibility to conduct special flights."

India evacuated more than 22,000 of its nationals under Operation Ganga.

The ambassador slammed Russia saying that the country is "using food as a weapon”.

“They are destroying and stealing crops of Ukraine. They are blocking ports, from which Ukraine wants to export grain.”

He further said, "Fortunately, there was an agreement signed on July 22 in Istanbul on the safe transportation of grains and fertilizers from Ukrainian ports to global markets. Just one day after signing the agreement, Russia attacked the port of Odesa which showed intentions of Russia."

He batted for Europe to decouple from Russian energy resources as well.

Poland's envoy Adam Burakowski says India can convince Russia to stop war

Poland's government on Thursday estimated the World War II losses caused by Germany to be $1.32 trillion and said Warsaw would officially demand reparations. "It is a major sum of 6.2 trillion zloty," head of the ruling Law and Justice party Jaroslaw Kaczynski said, adding that receiving reparations would be a "long and difficult" process.

Kaczynski was speaking at a conference dedicated to the presentation of a report on Poland's losses in the 1939-1945 war.

However, Germany has maintained that all financial claims linked to World War II have been settled and points to a 1953 decision by Poland to renunciate reparation claims against East Germany. Notably, Germany is Poland's biggest trade partner and a fellow member of the European Union and NATO.

The ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party has taken up the issue of compensation several times ever since it took power in 2015, but Poland hasn't officially demanded reparations.

In 1953, Poland's then-communist rulers relinquished all claims to war reparations under pressure from the Soviet Union, which wanted to free East Germany, also a Soviet satellite, from any liabilities. PiS says that agreement is invalid because Poland was unable to negotiate fair compensation.

Kaczynski has since brought forth the matter again.

"We have not only prepared a report... but we have also taken a decision, a decision on further action. That action is to ask Germany to negotiate these reparations. And this is a decision that we will implement," Kaczynski said.

Some six million Poles, including three million Polish Jews, were killed during the war and Warsaw was razed to the ground following a 1944 uprising in which about 200,000 civilians died.

Gravitas: 100 tonnes of dead fish pulled out of Europe's Oder river

Raising fears of an environmental disaster, Polish firefighters have recovered 100 tonnes of dead fish from the Oder river since Friday. The reason behind the troubling incident is still unknown. “We’d never had an operation of this scope on a river before,” said Monika Nowakowska-Drynda from the national firefighter press office. Dams, boats, quad bikes and even a drone are involved in the massive operation to recover dead fish from the river that runs through Germany and Poland. Thousands of dead fish were found floating in the 520 mile river around July end by anglers and some locals.

Environmental activists have raised concerns about the incident leading to a chain reaction that will affect the entire ecosystem. “We have to see how the bird population develops and what will happen to the racoons and otters. It is a catastrophe that will stay with us for years,” Karina Dörk, a district administrator of Germany’s Uckermark region, told the Tagesspiegel newspaper.

Even though the reason for the catastrophe is unclear, climate and environment minister Anna Moskwa has said that the tested samples haven’t shown the presence of any toxic substance. The samples have, however, shown elevated salt levels, which could have happened due to low water levels and high temperatures. The possibility of industrial waste water with a high chlorine content being poured into the river is also being explored.

Laboratories in the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Britain are also testing the water samples to understand the cause. Poland has offered a reward of one million złoty (approx. $2,17,000) for information about those responsible for the situation.

The Polish government has been under fire for failing to take swift action after people started reporting the sightings. On Friday, the CEO of Polish Waters, the state-owned company in charge of water management, and the head of the environmental protection inspectorate were fired for failing to tackle the pollution in Oder river.

Meanwhile, German officials accused Polish authorities of not informing them about the dead fish on time.

Cats may invoke different emotions among people but the Polish Academy of Sciences has classified them as an “invasive alien species”. The decision was taken by scientist Wojciech Solarz as he cited the damage cats cause to birds and other animals in their surroundings.

Polish institute classifies cats as alien invasive species

The state-run Polish Academy of Sciences has drawn the ire of a number of people as they classified domestic cats as an “invasive alien species”. The decision was taken by scientist Wojciech Solarz as he cited the damage cats cause to birds and other animals in their surroundings. According to Associated Press, Solarz explained that there is a major part of the scientific community which believes that cats have an adverse effect on biodiversity and its hunting patterns are causing significant harms to the environment. As a result, the decision was taken to include them in a national database of “alien species” run by the academy's Institute of Nature Conservation.

The decision to term house cats as “invasive alien species” has not gone down well with cat lovers as around the world as people started trolling online and the institute faced a lot of criticism.

Solarz was also criticised in TV debates where he appeared, but the scientist maintained his stance as he argued that “cats kill about 140 million birds in Poland each year”, according to the AP report.

The institute has also defended its stance as they mentioned the controversy on their official website and said that the conclusion was made keeping the European Union guidelines in mind.

According to the official statement, the institute explained that the common house cat was most probably domesticated around 10,000 years ago in the Middle East and as a result, it will not be wrong to consider them an “alien species” for Europe from “a strictly scientific point of view”.

In Poland, a mass grave with human ashes equivalent to around 8,000 people has been discovered near a former Nazi concentration camp. On Wednesday, the country's Institute of National Remembrance, which looks into atrocities done during the Nazi occupation of Poland and the communist era, said that the remains were discovered close to the Soldau concentration camp, now known as Dzialdowo, north of Warsaw. As per an AFP report, Investigator Tomasz Jankowski said that the sombre finding of about 17.5 tonnes (15,800 kilogrammes) of human ashes supports the assertion that at least 8,000 individuals died there.

Reportedly, the grim estimate is based on the weight of the remains. Two kilogrammes are considered to be roughly equivalent to one human body.

The camp was constructed by Nazi Germany during its occupation of Poland in World War II. It was used as a transit point, a site of imprisonment, and a location for execution for Jews, political opponents, and members of the Polish political elite.

While the exact toll of the deaths of inmates at Soldau has never been determined, but estimates place it around 30,000.

The majority of the deceased in the mass grave "were probably assassinated around 1939 and mostly belonged to the Polish elites," according to Jankowski.

In order to destroy any evidence of war crimes, Nazi authorities ordered Jewish prisoners to burn the remains in 1944.

Genetics specialist Andrzej Ossowski from the Pomeranian Medical University told AFP that samples from the ashes had been retrieved and will be examined in a laboratory.

He continued, "We can carry out DNA analysis, which will allow us to find out more about the identity of the victims," citing similar studies in the old Nazi concentration camps of Sobibor and Treblinka.

Belgium responded to their opening UEFA Nations League defeat against the Netherlands with five second-half goals as they came back to beat Poland 6-1 on Wednesday. Belgium began brightly, Michy Batshuayi hitting the post then having a goal disallowed in the first five minutes. Poland`s response was a patient one, their strikers going closer and closer until Robert Lewandowski took one touch to control then got their opener with a half-volley after 28 minutes.

The home team were level shortly before half-time as Timothy Castagne`s smart stabbed pass was steered in by Axel Witsel to make it 1-1 at the break. From there, Belgium went on to dominate and took a merited lead when Eden Hazard broke to set up Kevin De Bruyne as he curled in from just inside the box. Substitute Leandro Trossard then scored twice - his second a deep curling effort - before a long-range drive from Leander Dendoncker and Lois Openda`s first goal for his country rounded off an ultimately emphatic win.

A video of his comment surfaced on Twitter where he can be heard saying that the issue of Ukraine is “closed”, and if given the order, he's “interested in Poland”.

Kadyrov also demanded an apology from Poland for an incident involving Russia's ambassador earlier this month where the latter was splattered with red paint by anti-war protesters during a Victory Day ceremony.

"The issue of Ukraine is closed. I'm interested in Poland. What is it trying to achieve?" Kadyrov said, according to a translation.

Countries paying for Russian gas in roubles should be punished: Poland

Russia will stop supplying gas to Poland and Bulgaria, this comes as an escalation in deepening tensions between the West and Moscow amid the invasion of Ukraine. Poland's state-owned company has said that supplies from energy giant Gazprom via Ukraine and Belarus will be cut off.

Russia cuts gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria amid escalating crisis

Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission President, on Wednesday (April 27) vowed that the bloc will give Russia a ''coordinated response'' after it blocked gas supply to its members Poland and Bulgaria.

Calling Russian gas giant Gazprom's announcement "unjustified and unacceptable", Leyen said it was ''yet another attempt by Russia to use gas as an instrument of blackmail.''

However, Gazprom said it made the decision after Poland and Bulgaria failed to make their payments for gas in roubles.

European Union vows 'coordinated response' against Russia's gas stoppage

War is made up of more than two sides battling for victory; it also includes hundreds of thousands of refugees fighting for their lives.

Ukraine is Europe's fastest-growing refugee crisis since World War II.

The United Nations predicted Tuesday that more than eight million Ukrainians may flee as refugees this year. The organisation has also doubled its relief request for those trapped in the war-torn country.

More than 5.2 million Ukrainians have already fled the nation in the two months since Russia launched its full-fledged invasion on February 24.

The UN refugee agency had predicted that up to four million people would migrate this year and had initially estimated that $1.85 billion would be required to support refugees in neighbouring countries.

On March 1, the United Nations again issued an urgent appeal for $1.1 billion to support six million people within the country over the next three months.

Now, on Tuesday, the UN's humanitarian office, OCHA, said it estimates that more than $2.25 billion is needed to meet the country's growing requirements and that the appealed amount would last through August.

This is significant because it implies the UN's humanitarian agency has more than doubled its estimate for the amount of money required to help people within Ukraine.

In Ukraine, the number of individuals who require humanitarian assistance has also risen to 15.7 million, up from 12 million previously.

UNHCR spokeswoman Shabia Mantoo told reporters in Geneva that the new predicted number was reached "in collaboration with the authorities and neighbouring countries."

"But it is important to remember that this situation is highly dynamic," she added.

"This season I feel like everything clicked so it's great and I am really happy."

The two players wasted no time getting into the heat of the battle as the match began with a wild seven-deuce opening game during which four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka saved two break points and fired down four aces to hold serve.

The match remained on serve until Swiatek broke Osaka when she ripped a brilliant crosscourt backhand winner to go ahead 3-2 and then went on to close out the first set without facing a break point despite serving under 40%.

The former French Open champion raised her level in the second where she broke Osaka three times to race out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back as she sealed the 79-minute match on her first championship point when Osaka sent a forehand wide.

Swiatek is the first women to complete the "Sunshine Double" since Victoria Azarenka in 2016. Kim Clijsters (2005) and Steffi Graf (1994, 1996) are the other women to accomplish the feat.

Osaka arrived in Florida following a second-round loss at Indian Wells where she was reduced to tears after being heckled during the match but she proved resilient as she would only drop one set en route to the Miami final.

In the final, Osaka did well to hold serve in a tricky 10-minute game to start the match and while she was not able to do much against a determined Swiatek after that she still held her head high.

"I haven't been in this position for a little minute," said the 24-year-old Osaka, who took a break from the sport last year to prioritise her mental health.

"I know this isn't the outcome that you guys wanted but I am having a lot of fun out here so I hope that I can keep working hard and get more opportunities to be in a situation like this again."

Swiatek will take over the top ranking from Ash Barty, who stunned the sporting world last month when she announced her retirement from tennis aged 25.

Poland's Iga Swiatek will take over the world number one ranking in style as she kept her remarkable winning run intact with a 6-4 6-0 win over Japan's Naomi Osaka in the Miami Open final on Saturday.

Poland's Iga Swiatek will take over the world number one ranking in style as she kept her remarkable winning run intact with a 6-4 6-0 win over Japan's Naomi Osaka in the Miami Open final on Saturday. The Polish second seed, who will take over the world number one ranking next week, did not drop a set in Miami and has now won 17 consecutive matches dating back to her championship run at the Qatar Open in February. With the victory, the 20-year-old Swiatek becomes only the fourth woman to win the Indian Wells and Miami tournaments back-to-back, a feat known as the "Sunshine Double" given the tournaments' respective locations in California and Florida. "These weeks were so intense I didn't really know if I would able to keep up with the streak that I have," said Swiatek, who also became the first woman to win the opening three WTA 1000 tournaments in a season.
