In her Independence Day speech, Boluarte called the latest protests a threat against democracy and said she would request legislative powers from Congress for 120 days to fight crime, adding she was open to reverting Congress to a two-chamber legislature from a single-chamber format. "(These are) measures Peru needs to face, with more strength and efficiency, delinquency and crime," she added. The president also called for a grand national reconciliation between all Peruvians, saying that ideological differences shouldn't "lead us to live in a society of enemies, reigned by unnecessary and irreconcilable antagonism." On Friday, protesters attempted to reach Congress but were held back by police after a brief clash. Crowds began to disperse as Boluarte's three-hour-long speech drew to a close. A local health network in Puno said on Sunday that it treated five soldiers who were suffering from hypothermia. The soldiers were rescued by locals.

On Saturday, 16 people, including civilians and soldiers, were injured during clashes between protesters and the military in Ilave.

Peru has seen three months of protests since former president Pedro Castillo was ousted and arrested on December 7 after trying to dissolve parliament and rule by decree.

His supporters are demanding the resignation of Boluarte, as well as fresh elections, a new constitution and the dissolution of parliament.

The protesters reached Lima on Thursday, carrying flags and banners criticising the government and the police for deadly clashes in two southern cities- Ayacucho and Juliaca, a report by news agency Reuters said. A building on the San Martin Plaza caught fire late Thursday though it was empty and the cause of the fire is not yet known.

Peru's human rights ombudsman announced that one person was killed in Arequipa, adding to two other deaths resulting from clashes on Wednesday. The nationwide toll now stands at 45, the AFP report on Friday said.&nbsp;

Speaking to the news agency on Thursday, Victor Zanabria, head of the Lima Police Force, said "We have 11,800 police officers in the streets to control unrest, we have more than 120 vans and 49 military vehicles, and also the armed forces are participating." However, the protesters remain undeterred and will continue demonstrating till their demands are met.&nbsp;

"We want the usurper Dina Boluarte to step down and call for new elections," one protester Jose De la Rosa told Reuters on Thursday. Another protestor travelling to Lima who did not wish to be identified, said, "We won't forget the pain the police have caused in the town of Juliaca."

Meanwhile, President Boluarte addressed the country on Thursday night and said that protesters who carried out acts of violence will not go unpunished.&nbsp; 
“That was not a peaceful protest. The violent acts that occurred in December and January will not go unpunished. We will be alongside the Prosecutor’s Office checking and opening tax folders of people committing violent acts and destroying private and government property," Boluarte said, Reuters reported. The President also said that she would not get tired of inviting protesters for dialogue, adding "let’s work on the vision this country needs."

Peru has been rocked by protests organised by supporters of ousted president Pedro Castillo who have marched and barricaded streets around the South American country since December, demanding new elections and the removal of current leader Dina Boluarte.

The demonstrations have at times turned violent and at least 42 people have been killed in clashes with security forces, including a police officer burned alive in a vehicle, while hundreds more have been injured.

Authorities suspended operations at the airport as a preventive measure. The airport handles the second-most air traffic in the country. When the airport was closed, Castillo supporters were trying to reach the transportation hub.

In December, it suspended operations for five days.

The countrywide demonstrations have at times turned violent and at least 42 people have been killed in clashes with security forces.

The number of protest roadblocks in Peru meanwhile climbed Saturday to 100, with blockages particularly concentrated around Lima, transport authorities said.

However, the president said that the constitutional assembly won't be called as protesters have been demanding, as she emphasised the difficulties faced by Chile in drafting and approving the new Constitution.&nbsp;

"That cannot happen overnight," said Boluarte. On Friday, which was the unrest's tenth consecutive day, Rocio Leandro, the Ayacucho region's union leader, was arrested by the police.&nbsp;

After attempting to illegally dissolve Congress and restructure the judiciary, Castilo was removed from office. He was impeached the same day and his then-vice president Bolurate was sworn in as the new president later that day.

Protests strand 5,000 tourists in Machu Picchu gateway city

Two Peru ministers have stepped down following the deaths that resulted from the protest triggered by the ousting of former president Pedro Castillo last week.

Education Minister Patricia Correa and Culture Minister Jair Perez both made the announcement on Friday, citing the protest deaths.

"This morning I presented my letter of resignation from the position of education minister. The death of compatriots has no justification. State violence cannot be disproportionate and cause death," Correa said.

The agitation remained in full swing on Friday despite a nationwide state of emergency being declared on Wednesday. So far, at least 16 people have been killed, of which half were from Thursday during clashes with security forces in Ayacucho town.&nbsp;

Hundreds of agricultural workers were maintaining a blockade of the key Pan-American Highway in the north of Peru to protest against the death of three people in clashes with police.

The workers are demanding an increase in wages, and also object to the passage of a new agriculture bill passed by congress last week.

Authorities said three people, including one minor, were killed in clashes with police.

One of the victims died while being transferred to hospital after being held up by the roadblock.

The clashes have left 28 protesters and 36 police injured, while 45 agricultural workers were arrested.

The protesters are blocking a part of the Pan-American Highway about 500 kilometers (300 miles) north of the capital, Lima, where they had already been on strike since early last month.

Television images showed police using tear gas and birdshot against demonstrators.

The workers are angry about a bill passed by Congress on Tuesday.

They had been demanding that agricultural-export companies increase their daily wage from $11 to $18, but the bill only proposed an increase to 48 soles, around $13.

In a bid to calm tensions, President Francisco Sagasti vowed to "sanction the police that didn't respect the ban on using firearms" on protesters.

"We deplore and reject what happened in La Libertad. We condemn those who incite violence," he said on Twitter.

Sagasti also proposed dialogue to find a solution to the problem after acknowledging that the bill passed by Congress "didn't satisfy any of the parties."

Sagasti also tacitly admitted the failure of the new agrarian bill approved by Congress.&nbsp;

"Congress approved an agrarian promotion law that does not satisfy any of the parties involved. I will convene a national agreement forum to discuss the future of the agricultural sector and other measures," he said.

In response, the workers had agreed to unblock the highway to begin dialogue on Friday, Prime Minister Violeta Bermúdez announced.

The government also announced an investigation into the deaths during the protests and said the police chief of the La Libertad region would be removed.&nbsp;

Rural labor protests over wages and conditions have been a feature of the Peruvian political scene in recent weeks. Since the protests broke out there have been five deaths.
