Australian Liberal party leader Peter Dutton has called upon his colleague Senator David Van to resign from the parliament after a third allegation of inappropriate touching surfaced against him.

“I made a decision yesterday based on all of the information that was available to me. It had come to me overnight and on that morning, I raised it with him. I made a decision and that’s a decision I don’t regret at all," he added.

Sengol's intrinsic significance as the "Dharma Dand," the Indian civilisational heritage of ethical-spiritual authority over mere political authority, must be the subject of discussion rather than the nitpicking about its historicity, as it approaches the new Parliament chamber.

India to mint ₹75 coin to mark inauguration of new Parliament. Here's how it will look

India's new Parliament building will be inaugurated by prime minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. A historic Chola-era-inspired Relic will be placed in the new Parliament, this was announced by Home Minister Amit Shah. The Relic is a Sengol a replica of a golden scepter from Tamil Nadu dating back to 600 BC. Releasing a video India's Home Minister Amit Shah noted the historical importance of the Golden Sengol while the video also explained the use of symbolism at the time of India's Independence movement from British Rule.

Historic Sengol to be placed in the new Indian Parliament after inauguration

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate new parliament building on May 28. The new building will soon be the seat of the highest legislative body of largest democracy in the world. The government headed by PM Modi intends for the new parliament building to be centre of legislative activity rather than the current colonial-era building. However, a political row has erupted as the inauguration date for the new building draws closer.

The new parliament building

The new parliament building is 'just next door' to the existing building. The old building is almost 100 years old. It is a Heritage Grade-1 building.

Government of India's website on the Central Vista project underlines the need for a new parliament building.

"Over the years, the parliamentary activities and the number of people working therein and visitors have increased manifold...the new constructions and modifications have been done in an ad-hoc manner. For example, two new storeys constructed in 1956 over the outer circular part of the building hid the dome of the Central Hall and changed the facade of the original building. Further, the coverings of Jaali windows have reduced the natural light in the halls of two houses of the Parliament. Therefore, it is showing signs of distress and over-utilization and is not able to meet the current requirements in terms of space, amenities and technology," says the website

The new parliament building is in the shape of a triangle as opposed to the current building which is circular in shape. This, says Indian Government, ensures 'optimum space utilization'.

(Image: Government of India)

"The present building was never designed to accommodate a bicameral legislature for a full-fledged democracy," says the government website.

The number of MPs is unaltered from 545. The freeze on the maximum number of MPs is only till 2026. If the number of MPs increases, more space would be needed for seating arrangements.

If new building solves issues, what's the problem?

Opposition parties in India have been alleging that there was no need to hastily spend millions to construct the new building when the country had other pressing matters. BBC reports that the cost of constructing the new building has come to 9.7 billion rupees ($117.1 million, £94.2 million).

PM Modi has lauded the project many times and has said that this would be the first parliament building 'built by Indians'. The opposition has been arguing that instead of constructing a new structure altogether, it was still possible to make improvements in current building to address the issues faced.

There have also been allegations from the Opposition that the new building was an attempt to diminish the symbolism of the current one in which independent India's constitution was adopted. The BJP government is often perceived by many in political circles as following a religious agenda, something Indian constitution scoffs at as it maintains that religion and governance should be separate. BJP denies all such allegations.

The inauguration date of the new parliament is May 28. It is also the birth anniversary of VD Savarkar, a figure connected with India's freedom struggle but one who elicits mixed opinions across the country's political spectrum.

Another point raised by the opposition is that the President of India Droupadi Murmu should be inaugurating the new parliament building. They argue as the President of India is a constitutional post that outranks a prime minister, she should be inaugurating the parliament, the highest lawmaking body in the land. Inauguration by PM Modi is being seen by the opposition as his attempt to make a political statement. India will have its general elections next year.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has voiced the party's displeasure.

"The parliament of India is the supreme legislative body of the Republic of India, and the President of India is its highest constitutional authority. She alone represents government, opposition, and every citizen alike," Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote on Twitter.

"Inauguration of the new parliament building by her will symbolise [the] government's commitment to democratic values and constitutional propriety," his tweet read.

At the time of publishing the story, nineteen opposition parties had decided to boycott the inauguration of the new parliament building. This may mean that on the inauguration day, there would be near-zero participation from the Opposition.

Some of the parties which have decided to boycott the event are the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Left, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Janata Dal-United (JDU), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Samajwadi Party, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena faction.

'They can decide'

Amit Shah, India's Home Minister and powerful ally of PM Modi reportedly declined to comment on the backlash from the opposition and has said that decision to attend the ceremony was their own.

"We have invited everyone. They can decide according to their wisdom," said Shah. He was quoted by news outlet NDTV.

However, the opposition has received criticism from the government ranks. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday accused the Congres lacked "national spirit and sense of pride" in India's progress. He drew attention to former PMs from the Congress party inaugurating the annexe building and laying the foundation of the parliament library.

"If your head of government can inaugurate the Parliament annexe and library, then why can't the head of the government of this time do? It's as simple as that," he said as quoted by NDTV.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate new parliament building on May 28. The new building will soon be the seat of the highest legislative body of largest democracy in the world.

The new parliament building The new parliament building is 'just next door' to the existing building. Therefore, it is showing signs of distress and over-utilization and is not able to meet the current requirements in terms of space, amenities and technology," says the website The new parliament building is in the shape of a triangle as opposed to the current building which is circular in shape. This, says Indian Government, ensures 'optimum space utilization'. (Image: Government of India) "The present building was never designed to accommodate a bicameral legislature for a full-fledged democracy," says the government website. Also Read | New Parliament building: Centre releases pics, check opening date, cost & all you need to know The inauguration date of the new parliament is May 28. The President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu is not being invited for the inauguration of the new Parliament Building. The Parliament of India is the supreme legislative body of the Republic of India, and the President of India is its highest Constitutional authority. 2/4 — Mallikarjun Kharge (@kharge) May 22, 2023 × At the time of publishing the story, nineteen opposition parties had decided to boycott the inauguration of the new parliament building. 'They can decide' Amit Shah, India's Home Minister and powerful ally of PM Modi reportedly declined to comment on the backlash from the opposition and has said that decision to attend the ceremony was their own.
German lawmakers on Friday (March 17) approved a plan to shrink the country's increasingly bloated Parliament. However, two opposition parties, the Christian Social Union (CSU) and the Left Party, were vehemently critical and the plan is expected to face a court challenge. Parliament's lower house, also known as Bundestag, currently has a record 736 members, a report by the news agency Associated Press said. The changes approved on a 400-261 vote with 23 abstentions would reduce this number to 630.

During elections in Germany, every voter gets two votes, one for a directly elected candidate, the other for a party list. Germany: Lawmakers approve plan to shrink bloated parliament; two opposition parties criticise move

The Tunisian parliament held its first session with the recently elected members, on Monday (March 13), nearly 20 months after it was suspended in July 2021. The members who were chosen in an election which took place in December and January with a voter turnout of 11 per cent, began the session which was closed to all but the state media. Reportedly, independent or foreign journalists were barred from entering the parliament building.

The north African country has recently witnessed widespread protests organised by different groups including the opposition coalition, its powerful labour union UGTT, journalists, and so on. In 2021, incumbent President Kais Saied shut down the previously elected parliament, a move which has been described as a power grab and a coup by many in the country.

What happened during the session?

Being the oldest in the new parliament, MP Saleh Mbarki from the Kabaria constituency chaired the opening session and said, “Our duties as people's representatives are to work in partnership with the executive authority for the unity of the state,” reported Reuters.

Meanwhile, the main opposition coalition, The National Salvation Front, in a statement said they will not recognise this parliament and said that it came about via a “putschist constitution and elections shunned by the overwhelming majority of voters.”

The low voter turnout has been attributed to most parties boycotting the election which left candidates without party affiliation contesting in the elections. Therefore, most of the new parliament members are political independents who will not be an effective check on executive power, Tunisian activists have warned, reported the Guardian.

Out of the 161 seats of the Tunisian parliament, only 154 are occupied due to the lack of candidates for representatives of Tunisians living abroad. During the first session of the new parliament, on Monday, lawmakers elected their speaker, Ibrahim Bouderbala, the former president of the Bar Association and supposedly a staunch supporter of Saied, reported Reuters.

Notably, the new parliament will not have the same power that the previous one did as Saied sacked the government, froze parliament, and seized almost total power of the country in 2021 after which he also wrote a new constitution last year.

According to this new constitution, the parliament cannot impeach the president or even hold the government accountable for their actions, as per media reports. Additionally, bills proposed by the president, in this Saied, will be prioritised as opposed to those put forward by other lawmakers.

Journalists barred from attending the first session

For the first time since the 2011 revolution when ousted late dictator Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali was in power Tunisia witnessed a ban on journalists. As only journalists from state-controlled media like the state TV, radio, and news agency were allowed to cover the proceedings of the first session of the new parliament on Monday. Meanwhile, journalists from foreign and private outlets were barred from the parliament building.

“Lawmakers it is a shame. The press is under siege”, journalists outside the building chanted as per Reuters. The move was also defended by Fatma Mseddi, a newly elected MP who said that the decision was taken to avoid “disorder” and convey an “inappropriate image”. The national union of journalists in Tunisia also issued a statement which draws parallels between the current situation and the pre-revolution time.

Amira Mohamed, vice president of the SNJT, told Reuters how the move is a “scandal and a serious violation of press freedom”. She added, “It harms the image of Tunisia and attacks the citizen's right to a free and pluralistic media.” Previously, speaking to the independent radio station Mosaique FM in Tunisia she had also said that media was being censored and that the union would “opt for escalation” if this ban continues.
