Benjamin Netanyahu will be sworn in as Prime Minister of Israel for a record sixth time on Thursday. Netanyahu, whose coalition won a clear majority in November elections, will head up a highly controversial right-wing government.

Former minister Amir Ohana created history on Tuesday by becoming the first openly gay speaker of parliament in Israel. He was given the coveted position as the new government under the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was sworn in. Ohana had previously served as the justice minister in 2019 in the Netanyahu cabinet and he has been a member of parliament since 2015.

During the election for speaker of parliament, Ohana received 63 votes in favour, five against while one lawmaker decided to abstain from voting. Thanks to the result, he became the third most powerful political figure in the country – only after the Prime Minister and the President.

The appointment of Ohana holds special significance after the ruling Likud Party went into an alliance with Avi Maoz, the leader of the Noam party, who is notorious for his anti-LGBTQ views.

Maoz will be appointed deputy minister in charge of "Jewish identity" as part of the agreement between the two parties. Earlier, he said that he will "study the legal avenues to cancel Gay Pride".

Portugal's parliament voted in favour of decriminalising euthanasia for the third time after the past two attempts to pass the legislation were vetoed by the country’s president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. “Medically-assisted death” was legalised by Belgium and the Netherlands more than two decades ago and several European countries have followed suit in the last few years. However, Portugal is yet to join the list due to the conservative approach taken by top authorities.

The president said Thursday that he will take his decision "certainly before Christmas".

Reuters reported the bill advocates "the right to life cannot be turned into an obligation to live under any circumstances". However, it has been opposed by various groups recently with Catholic Doctors' Association saying that it "brings Portugal closer to more permissive legislation".

According to the latest bill, euthanasia will be reserved for adults with "serious and incurable illness" and patients who have made a "reiterated" and "free and informed" personal decision.

The speaker of Russia's lower house of parliament said on Sunday (November 27) that the country will soon adopt a law that will prohibit foreigners from taking service from Russian women as surrogate mothers. Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said this on Russia's Mother's Day.

Paid surrogacy is legal in Russia, but the practice has been criticised by religious groups as commercializing the birth of children.

"Everything must be done to protect children by prohibiting foreigners from using the surrogacy service," Volodin said on the Telegram messaging app. "We will make this decision at the beginning of December."

Volodin said that about 45,000 born by surrogate mothers have been taken abroad in the past few years.

"Child trafficking is unacceptable," he added.

"This is a large illegal business, with a turnover estimated at more than 2 billion euros. Such babies often end up in hardest situations: they become victims of crimes, including sale for transplants, they end up in same-sex couples," Volodin added.

The bill barring foreigners has been passed by Russian lawmakers nearly unanimously in its first reading in May. If it is passed by the lower house in the final third reading, it will then be reviewed by the upper house of the parliament.

Under the proposed law, only married citizens of the Russian Federation or single female Russian nationals, who can not give birth to a child for medical reasons, can use surrogate mother services. Foreign nationals won’t be entitled to the surrogacy service in Russia.

The Ukrainian government says Russia has forcibly deported more than 12,000 Ukrainian children since invading its neighbour in February, while 440 have died in the war and hundreds are missing.

Russia denies forced deportations, saying the movement of people into Russia from Ukraine has been to protect civilians from Ukrainian soldiers.

Putin met on Friday with a carefully selected group of mothers of Russian soldiers sent to fight in Ukraine telling them their sons had not died in vain.

The New Zealand Parliament has passed legislation that bans the bureaucracy from using inexplicable jargon and complex language while communicating with the public.

The passage of the Plain Language Act aims to make democracy, the government says, more inclusive, especially for non-native English speakers, people with disabilities, and those who are under-educated.

“People living in New Zealand have a right to understand what the government is asking them to do, and what their rights are, what they’re entitled to from the government,” MP Rachel Boyack, who presented the bill, said.

The law was based on the United States Plain Writing Act of 2010 which requires the US Federal Government to produce public documents in a 'clear, concise, well-organised' manner, the lawmaker said. The legislation will now be sent for the Royal Assent.

The bill got the support from the Labour, Green and Māori parties, while the National Party vowed it to repeal if elected next year.

According to the Guardian, National MP Simeon Brown on Wednesday said that it was “a solution looking for a problem” and added that the law would create new layers of bureaucracy in the form of plain language officers.

But Boyack argued that it was "common sense" to move such a law as it would make engagement with the public sector simpler for New Zealanders.

"It will require the Public Service Commissioner to issue plain language guidance to government agencies, helping them explain things in a way that is accessible to all New Zealanders

"Much of the information we receive as members of the public from government departments uses complicated language, jargon, and unnecessary acronyms. This is a common-sense change that will make engaging with the public sector simpler for New Zealanders."

Kurdish politician Abdul Latif Rashid was elected the new president of Iraq signaling the end to the longest political deadlock in the country’s history since the United States military left.

During the vote which took place on Thursday, 269 lawmakers out of the total 329 took part and the British-educated engineer was able to claim the position after securing a majority.

In the recent few months, Iraq has seen widespread protests due to the confusion regarding the country’s new premier and as a result, the coalition government had to organise another vote on Thursday. Rashid will now have 15 days to form the government along with the political partners.

According to Al Jazeera, Rashid was the minister of water resources from 2003-2010.

Since March this year, Iraq has been deadlocked when it comes to the formation of the new government. The first round of voting which took place in February and March did not result in majority for any candidate and public support strongly consolidated behind Muqtada al-Sadr.

The well-known Muslim leader and his party emerged as the ones with the highest number of seats in the Iraqi parliament but failed to win majority. As a result, the opposition was able to form a coalition alliance which eventually came to power through strategic partnerships.

The position of president in Iraq is mainly ceremonial but the biggest responsibility of Rashid will be to invite the nominee from the largest parliamentary bloc to form a government. At present, the system dictates that the president of Iraq is Kurdish while the prime minister is generally Shia.

''We are making these carpets for the New Indian Parliament. It's been months since we are working on these carpets and within a few days now, we will complete them. We are working day and night and most of the people in this village are working in the craft industry. The design is very different, and it was a little difficult to make but finally, we made it. It's a very intricate design. It took us double the time and it turned out to be extremely beautiful. There are around 12 carpets being made for the parliament. It will give us immense happiness when people see our work in the parliament,'' said Tariq Khan, Artisan.

The carpets have a unique design and also a different shape. The designs have been incorporated from the traditional Kashmiri Pashmina shawl designs. ''The size of the carpet is different. It starts with less width and goes on to become bigger. The bottom of the carpet is half the length of the top. The design is taken from the traditional Kashmiri shawls. It's very intricate and it makes it different from the rest. Around 90 per cent of the work is finished and within a few days, I think all the work will be completed.
