A man dressed in a ninja costume, wielding a sword, was shot by the French police after he attacked two female officers in Paris.

The incident took place near a petrol station in the northwestern France of Cherbourg city on Thursday.

According to reports, the attacker had stolen a vehicle and caused an accident, following which two policewomen were called in at the site.

When the police officers approached the assailant, both of them were attacked by his word, resulting in an injury in the face for one police officer and the chin for the other.

The man— dressed in black in the style of traditional Japanese ninja fighters — was shot three times by the officers and was flown to hospital by helicopter in serious condition.

The two police officers involved are in good condition, authorities said.

French Interior Minister Gérard Darmanin expressed his support for the police force.

"While intervening in a vehicle theft in Cherbourg, two police officers were injured," Darmanin tweeted, adding, “(My) support to the national police."

Cherbourg's mayor Benoît Arrivé also expressed his gratitude for the work of the police, saying, "All my support to the forces of order."

Last month, a policeman in the French Rivera city of Cannes survived a knife attack after an assailant approached four officers outside the police station who were preparing to go on control.

The assailant approached the officers asking for information before opening the door of the vehicle they were in and stabbing one of the officers in the chest with a knife. The attacker then attempted to stab a second officer before he was neutralized.

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Paris to demand meaningful action from world leaders at the Glasgow COP26 summit on Saturday.

Demonstrators answering the call of various environmental NGOs held banners and signs, performed stunts and chanted slogans in front of the French capital's city hall.

"Today, we do not need announcements, promises and commitments, we need concrete action," Greenpeace France head Jean-Francois Julliard told Reuters. "How will they do it, country by country, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the most important sectors?"

The demonstration was one of many across the world called for by a coalition of environmental groups and other civil society organisations as part of a "Global Day of Action for Climate Justice."

A week of government speeches and pledges at the two-week UN climate conference in Glasgow brought promises to phase out coal, slash emissions of the potent greenhouse gas methane and cut deforestation.

Protesters in Paris expressed frustration however because of what they described as "climate inaction" and "empty words" on the part of world leaders.

"I am 73 years old and I can see that we are leaving an extremely dangerous world to our children. Our leaders, even though they attend COPs, are not implementing the necessary measures against global warming," said protester Marie-Claire Gourinal.

Echoing the message of prominent Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and a generation of young climate activists, numerous young protesters also attended the Paris rally to call for a change.

"Coming here allows me to see that I am not alone in worrying about the future and it gives me a bit of hope," 17 year old protester Mia Rety told Reuters. "But I also hope that things will change at a higher level, because at my own level, there isn't much I can really do."

French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday condemned as "inexcusable" a deadly crackdown by Paris police on a 1961 protest by Algerians whose scale was a taboo covered up for decades by French authorities.

Macron told relatives and activists on the 60th anniversary of the bloodshed that "crimes" were committed on the night of October 17, 1961 under the command of the notorious Paris police chief Maurice Papon.

He acknowledged that several dozen protesters had been killed, "their bodies thrown into the River Seine" and paid tribute to the memory of the victims.

The precise number of victims has never been made clear and some activists fear several hundred could have been killed.

Macron "recognised the facts: that the crimes committed that night under Maurice Papon are inexcusable for the Republic," the Elysee said.

"This tragedy was long hushed-up, denied or concealed," it added.

Macron, the first French president to attend a memorial ceremony for those killed, observed a minute of silence in their memory at the Bezons bridge over the Seine on the outskirts of Paris where the protest started.

His comments that crimes were committed went further than predecessor Francois Hollande, who acknowledged in 2012 that the protesting Algerians had been "killed during a bloody repression".

However, as expected, he did not issue a formal apology. He also did not give a public speech, with the Elysee issuing only the written statement.

Papon was in the 1980s revealed to have been a collaborator with the occupying Nazis in World War II and complicit in the deportation of Jews. He was convicted of crimes against humanity but later released.

The main suspect in a jihadist rampage that killed 130 people across Paris described himself defiantly as "an Islamic State soldier" and shouted at the top judge on Wednesday at the start of a trial into the 2015 attacks.

Salah Abdeslam, 31, is believed to be the only surviving member of the group that carried out the gun-and-bomb attacks on six restaurants and bars, the Bataclan concert hall and a sports stadium on Nov. 13, 2015, in which hundreds were injured.

He appeared in court dressed in black and wearing a black face mask. Asked his profession, the French-Moroccan removed his mask and told the Paris court: "I gave up my job to become an Islamic State soldier."

While the other defendants, who are accused of providing guns, cars or helping plan the attacks, simply answered routine questions on their name and profession and otherwise remained quiet, Abdeslam clearly sought to use the start of the trial as a platform.

Asked by the court's top judge to give his name, Abdeslam used the Shahada, an Islamic oath, saying: "I want to testify that there is no god except Allah and that Mohammad is his servant."

He later shouted at the court's top judge for two minutes, saying the defendants had been treated "like dogs," BFM television reported, adding that someone in the public section of the court, where victims and victims' relatives sit, shouted back: "You bastard, 130 people were killed."

Victor Edou, a lawyer for eight Bataclan survivors, had said earlier that Abdeslam's statement that he is an Islamic State soldier was "very violent."

"Some of my clients are not doing too well... after hearing a statement that they took as a new, direct threat," he said. "It's going to be like that for nine months."

Others said they were trying not to attach much importance to Abdeslam's comments.

"I need more to be shocked ... I'm not afraid," said Thierry Mallet, a Bataclan survivor.

Responsibility for the attacks was claimed by Islamic State, which had urged followers to attack France over its involvement in the fight against the militant group in Iraq and Syria.

IMPATIENT AND ANXIOUS

Before the trial, survivors and victims' relatives had said they were impatient to hear testimony that might help them better understand what happened and why it did so.

"It is important that the victims can bear witness, can tell the perpetrators, the suspects who are on the stand, about the pain," said Philippe Duperron, whose 30-year-old son Thomas was killed in the attacks.

"We are also waiting anxiously because we know that as this trial takes place the pain, the events, everything will come back to the surface."

The trial is expected to last nine months, with nearly 1,800 plaintiffs and more than 300 lawyers involved in what Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti called an unprecedented judicial marathon. The court's top judge, Jean-Louis Peries, said it was an historic trial.

Eleven of the 20 defendants are already in jail pending trial and six will be tried in absentia - most of them are believed to be dead. Most face life imprisonment if convicted.

Police mounted tight security around the Palais de Justice courthouse in central Paris. Defendants appeared behind a reinforced glass partition in a purpose-built courtroom and all people must pass through several checkpoints to enter the court.

"The terrorist threat in France is high, especially at times like the attacks' trial," Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin told France Inter radio.

The first days of the trial are expected to be largely procedural. Victims' testimonies are set to start on Sept. 28. Questioning of the accused will start in November but they are not set to testify about the night of the attacks and the week before them until March.

A verdict is not expected before late May, but Bataclan survivor Gaetan Honore, 40, said being there from the start mattered.

"It was important to be here on the first day, symbolically. I'm hoping to understand, somehow, how this could happen," he said.

'I'm Islamic State soldier': Main suspect shouts at judge as 2015 Paris attacks trial starts

The main suspect in the trial over the November 2015 attacks in Paris claimed Thursday three co accused knew nothing about the plot, in his latest unscheduled intervention to disrupt proceedings.

"They helped me but they knew nothing at all" about the attacks plot, said Salah Abdeslam, the sole survivor of the group of assailants who killed 130 people.

"They are in prison but did nothing," he added before his microphone was cut by the presiding judge Jean-Louis Peries who then suspended the hearing.

It was the second such intervention by Abdeslam, who on the first day of the landmark trial on Wednesday had launched into a diatribe about how he and his co-accused were being treated "like dogs" in prison.

On this occasion, he had intervened while the court was considering the admissability of the complaints brought by certain plaintiffs in the case.

"The victims from Syria and Iraq -- will they be able to speak?" asked Abdeslam, his dark hair combed back, wearing a white sweater with coloured strips.

"In principle, we should be presumed innocent before being judged... even if I do not endorse your justice," he said.

"Let's leave this discussion, Mr. Abdeslam", replied the judge. "Sir don't be selfish. There are other people who want to hear me," Abdeslam retorted.

Abdeslam's outbursts in court have sharply contrasted with his refusal over the last year to give any statements to investigators, always remaining silent.

Peries commented: "You have had five years to comment, you did not wish to make statements as is your right. I understood now that you wanted to speak, and that's fine but now is not the time."

The trial, which is expected to last nine months, is the biggest in France's modern legal history and sees 20 defendants, including Abdeslam, facing sentences of up to life in prison. Six of the suspects are being tried in absentia.

One of the five Afghans, who were evacuated from Kabul to Paris, was detained on Tuesday on suspected links to the Taliban, France’s interior minister Gerald Darmanin said.

The five Afghan evacuees were put under high surveillance by France’s intelligence agency for possible links to the Taliban. They were quarantined in a hotel in Paris, as they haven’t been fully vaccinated.

“One left the place where he was asked to stay and police arrested him,” local media quoted Darmanin as saying.

“Of the other four men, one was obviously linked to the Taliban. But he helped the French army a lot, the French (nationals), your fellow journalists, more than a hundred Afghans who had visas and could not get out from the embassy,” he added.

Darmanin said security checks were done in Abu Dhabi, where the French have transferred evacuees before their journey to Paris. There was no breach, he said.

Darmanin said France has evacuated over 1,000 Afghans from Kabul over the past week, including a large majority of Afghans who worked with the French government or French groups in the country.

Meanwhile, a new flight of French evacuees from Kabul landed in Paris at dawn on Tuesday, with 205 evacuees on board, including 204 Afghans.

Cuba's embassy in Paris said on Tuesday it had been attacked overnight with petrol bombs that caused some damage but no injuries to its staff, in an incident that prompted French authorities to beef up security around the building.

Three petrol bombs were thrown by two unnamed individuals, causing a fire on the facade and the entrance of the building, the embassy said in a statement.

Cuba has been rocked by protests against a deep economic crisis, the government's handling of the coronavirus pandemic and curbs on civil liberties, prompting the Communist-run country to restrict access to social media.

Cuba's foreign ministry published photos of the petrol bombs on its official Twitter feed.

"Those directly responsible for these acts are those who incite violence and hatred against our country," it said.

Its embassy in Paris pointed the finger at the United States, saying such acts had been "encouraged by campaigns by the U.S. government against our country."

The foreign ministers of the United States and 20 other countries on Monday condemned mass arrests in Cuba and called for full restoration of Internet access.

Jim Morrison’s fans gathered on Saturday in Paris to remember the legendary musician on his 50th death anniversary. His fans collected at the Pere-Lachaise cemetery in eastern Paris to honour the rock legend.

Just 27 in all, the rock musician was died in Paris.

The cemetery has become a pilgrimage for fans of Jim Morrison over the years, who was known for his dark lyrics, wavy locks, leather pants and a phenomenal stage presence. The Doors frontman made the band a household name with hits like ‘Light My Fire’, ‘Hello I Love You’, ‘Touch Me’ and ‘Riders on the Storm’.

Born in 1943 in Melbourne, Florida, Jim Morrison was the son of a US Navy officer and moved constantly as a child, growing up in Florida, Virginia, Texas, New Mexico and California. He said he witnessed the aftermath of a terrible car accident on a Native American reservation as a child, an event that loomed large in his later lyrics and poetry. An avid reader, he was heavily influenced by the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, the poet Arthur Rimbaud and the surrealist dramatist Antonin Artaud.

In 1965, while living in Los Angeles, he and keyboardist Ray Manzarek, a fellow UCLA film student, founded The Doors. Guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore joined soon after.

After the band took flight, it also came crashing down soon as Jim Morrison sank into alcoholism. He was twice arrested for his on-stage antics, including a Miami concert that saw him convicted of indecent exposure and profanity. He was later pardoned posthumously.

The rocker was found dead in a bathtub in 1971. No autopsy was performed and accounts of what caused his death are disputed.

French police on Friday herded migrants on buses and cleared central Paris. The migrants had been protesting lack of accomodation and had even pitched tents in front of the Paris City Hall.

Around 200 tents, mainly red, had been set up Thursday, sheltering 300 people, including children, from sub-Saharan Africa.

"I'm living in the street, I have no home, my priority is to have a home and then to go to school", said Cisse Mohamed, an underage refugee sitting in of the tents.

Novak Djokovic pulled off a staggering triumph throughout 13-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal in the elimination rounds of the competition on Friday. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal both played some magnificent tennis to deliver an energizing four-setter that took more than four hours to finish.

The Serb didn't begin well and was 0-5 down at one phase in the primary set. However, he figured out how to create a shocking turnaround in a match that is as of now being viewed as truly outstanding in the game's set of experiences.

Novak Djokovic ultimately won 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-2, giving the enchanted group at Court Philippe Chatrier a genuine delight. Social media was buzzing with applauses about the nature of the match-all through its length, and in his post-match press, Novak Djokovic himself repeated a similar opinion.

"Definitely the best match I was ever a part of at Roland Garros, and top three in general. Playing my biggest rival on the court, he’s been a dominant force for so long. Electric atmosphere. One of the nights you remember forever."

He likewise clarified how he defeated his lethargic beginning, and how the adequacy of his serve helped him towards the end.

"Even though I didn't have a great start, I felt that I was hitting the ball well and that I needed to get into his match and adapt to his ball. I found my serve when I was down a break in the fourth. Tonight the serve wasn't a big weapon, but then it clicked at 0-2."

In spite of the fact that their experience didn't go to five sets like the first elimination round, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal went through four hours and eleven minutes battling each other brutally. The match was amazingly physical and difficult, with the team playing a line of long energizes.

Novak Djokovic, notwithstanding, is certain of recuperating on schedule for Sunday's last against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

"My recovery abilities are very good and my physio will keep me in shape. I'll take things slowly. I know what I need to do, I'm not the freshest guy right now, but I have a day and a half," he added. "I'll enjoy the victory a little bit, relax a bit, and tomorrow I’ll start thinking about it. Rest is most important now."

Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas had gone head to head in the elimination rounds of a similar competition last year, which the Serb won in five extraordinary sets.

"Tsitsipas doesn't want to stop there. He leads the race ranking this year. Clay is his best surface. It was an epic semi last year, and I'll need the power to beat him."
