‘Yahoodi agent’, ‘begging for funds’: Pakistanis slam PM Shehbaz Sharif over meeting with Israel-linked Rothschild & Co

Outrage swept Pakistan after news broke that a man sold his 3-year-old daughter to a 60-year-old man. The incident happened in Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan, where the girl was sold for 2.5 million Pakistani rupees, around $9,000. Her father, Abdul Baqi, was arrested in the border city of Chaman, while 60-year-old Salah Uddin was absconding. The matter has drawn attention to the practice of walwar, or bride price, a traditional Pashto custom where a groom or his family pays money to the bride's family. Local reports state that the marriage only existed on paper for now since the entire amount had not been paid. Once the full walwar money had been handed to the girl's father, she would have been considered the 60-year-old's wife. But it could have been years before the full bride price was paid. Till then, the arrangement would have meant that the girl's family could not look for another match for her in the future, even after she became an adult. In case they tried to, it could have serious repercussions, including violence between the two families. After the news became public, Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti directed authorities to launch an investigation instead of waiting for a formal complaint from any of the relatives. Israr Ahmed Umrani, assistant inspector general of Balochistan Police for gender issues, told The Media Line that the girl's father had been arrested while they are searching for Salah Uddin. Chaman Police Subdivisional Police Officer Abdul Jabbar Khan told the outlet that the girl and her mother were under police protection.
Girl's sister was married to Salah Uddin's son, who killed her
Meanwhile, the police are also looking into the murder of the girl's older sister, Shukria Bibi, on the outskirts of Quetta. According to police, Baqi arranged Shukria's marriage to Salah Uddin's son for 1.5 million rupees. Later, he set up his 3-year-old to marry Salah Uddin, but he reportedly asked him to send his 8-year-old daughter instead. A few days later, Shukria was killed by her husband Kamran, who says he got angry after his wife looked outside through a doorway and hit her with an iron rod. The police are investigating whether Shukria's murder could be connected to the latest dispute. Baqi is also said to have told a local vlogger the same. He says that Shukria was subjected to violence by her in-laws who demanded that another minor girl be married into their family. Baqi says he agreed because of poverty and since he wanted to buy a home. Child marriages are illegal in Balochistan, and the Balochistan Child Marriages Restraint Act, 2025, sets the minimum marriage age at 18. A man found guilty under the law can be imprisoned for two to three years and fined 100,000 to 200,000 Pakistani rupees.

A case of child marriage has rocked Pakistan where a father married off his 3-year-old daughter to a 60-year-old man in exchange for 2.5 million Pakistani rupees. His other daughter was married to the groom's son, who had killed her.

The sons of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, Sulaiman and Kasim Khan, have criticised the British government over what they describe as an inadequate response to their father’s imprisonment. In a new interview with The Telegraph, the brothers said they were disappointed by the assistance offered when they considered travelling to Pakistan to see their father.

The brothers said former British Foreign Secretary David Lammy advised them against travelling to Pakistan and warned that the UK government would not be able to support them if they were arrested or detained. Lammy served as foreign secretary from July 2024 to September 2025.

Sulaiman and Kasim said they believe Britain could have applied greater pressure on Pakistan, pointing to international concerns over Imran Khan’s detention. The brothers have also been unable to see their father in person for years, while their attempts to secure visas to travel to Pakistan have reportedly faced repeated rejection on technical grounds.

The controversy comes as concerns over Imran Khan’s prison conditions and access to medical care continue to draw international attention. The brothers have repeatedly called for greater action to ensure they can meet their father.

A technology demonstration in Islamabad took an unexpected turn when an experimental remotely controlled car lost its connection and crashed into a parked police vehicle, turning a showcase of Pakistani innovation into a viral social media spectacle. Journalist Muhammad Aalijah was documenting the vehicle at D-Chowk, Islamabad, when the car suddenly lost control. Footage from the demonstration shows the vehicle moving forward before its steering appeared to malfunction. Aalijah had been invited to cover Zafar’s innovation and document the demonstration. Speaking to Dawn, Aalijah said the demonstration had been proceeding normally until an internet-related technical issue affected the vehicle. According to Aalijah, the vehicle was not a fully autonomous car in the conventional sense. Instead, it was being operated remotely through an internet connection. When the connection was suddenly interrupted, the remote operator lost control of the vehicle. The incident occurred around Islamabad’s D-Chowk, a prominent location near several key government buildings. Videos of the crash quickly circulated on social media platforms, with users turning the unexpected failure into a wave of jokes, memes and viral reactions. Aalijah later provided additional context about the incident on social media, explaining that the vehicle was being operated using satellite and internet connectivity. "The vehicle was operating via satellite and the internet. However, as soon as the internet connection was disconnected during remote operation, the vehicle went out of control and crashed into a police vehicle," he said.

Pakistan is facing fresh criticism over press freedom after journalist and researcher Danish Irshad was reportedly placed on the country’s Fourth Schedule, an administrative terrorism watch list that can impose restrictions on movement, finances and public activities.

Irshad has reportedly documented developments in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir for nearly a decade, including recent protests, the security crackdown and the deaths of civilians. His reported inclusion on the Fourth Schedule has raised questions among journalists, activists and rights groups over the use of anti-terror provisions against a journalist.

Critics argue that the reported absence of a public trial or clearly stated criminal allegations against Irshad raises serious concerns about press freedom and independent journalism. Pakistani journalists and activists have reportedly described the move as an attack on media freedom and warned that it could have a chilling effect on journalists covering protests, human rights and political unrest.

The development comes amid broader restrictions on media access and reporting from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Foreign journalists and Pakistani staff working with international media have reportedly faced additional government clearance requirements for reporting outside Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi.

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s hospital visit has triggered a fresh political confrontation after he was taken from Adiala Jail to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad for a medical checkup before being returned to prison.

Khan’s party, PTI, has filed a contempt petition in the Supreme Court, accusing authorities of violating an order that reportedly directed his medical examination at Shifa International Hospital.

The Pakistan government has rejected the allegations, saying security concerns linked to PTI supporters prompted the change in hospital. Officials said a team of doctors examined Khan and declared him medically fit.

PTI has rejected the government’s explanation and maintained that no party workers were present around the hospital.

Imran Khan Hospital Row Escalates | PTI Files Contempt Petition Over Supreme Court Order

Pakistan’s former prime minister, Imran Khan, who had been serving his jail sentence, was briefly taken to a hospital for a medical check-up early Friday (Aug 21) before being taken back to prison. This came amid uproar over health concerns of the incarcerated founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) that led to the Supreme Court issuing an order earlier this week, directing Khan to be moved to Islamabad’s Shifa International Hospital for treatment.According to a Dawn report, tight security measures were undertaken outside the hospital during Khan’s move. Pitras Bukhari Road and Service Road South had been cordoned off while hundreds of law enforcement personnel were also deployed in and around the hospital premises.Confirming his arrival at the hospital, Zulfi Bukhari, a spokesman for Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, told AFP, “It’s confirmed that he has arrived at Shifa International Hospital.”“The Supreme Court’s order has been complied with,” he added.Arif Alvi, Pakistan’s former president and a PTI member, also confirmed the development on social media. Imran Khan back in jail after court ordered hospital visit amid health concerns

As the Asim Munir-led hybrid regime faces a growing legitimacy crisis, is the political scenario in Pakistan set to change yet again? In a big boost for the opposition, ex-Pakistan PM Imran Khan secured a major relief From the country's supreme court after being in Lahore's Adiala jail for over three years. A three-member supreme court bench ordered the cricketer-turned-politician to be moved to Islamabad's Shifa International hospital for treatment until at least September 16. This came in wake of growing concerns over the health of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf founder. Khan will have to be transferred to the private hospital within 48 hours. The Pak SC also ordered the creation of a medical board for him comprising an eye specialist, a general physician, a cardiologist and Khan's personal physician Dr. Faisal Sultan. The court also made it clear that Sultan as well as the PTI founder's sister Dr. Uzma Khan will be associated with his treatment. This is not all. According to the court's order, the jail authorities have to facilitate weekly meetings with his family and regular calls with his UK-based sons. The cost of the treatment shall be borne by the ex-PM's family. However, is there a cover-up being attempted? Even as rumours about Khan's death have been doing the rounds, Pakistan's top court has chosen to gag the media. The Pakistan SC directed Khan's family and lawyers not to share his medical reports with the media. It further directed that no media talk, political activity or press conference will be held outside the hospital by anyone meeting Khan. According to the court, this order cannot be recalled if these directives are violated. This raises a key question. Is the Pakistani establishment trying to hide the reality of Khan's medical condition? Let's jog your memory back a little. In February this year, Imran Khan's lawyer informed the SC that he lost 85% of vision in his right eye. The PTI founder has been diagnosed with right central retinal vein occlusion, a medical condition which can cause permanent damage to eyesight if left untreated. His condition aggravated as he was merely given eye drops for three months, which resulted in no improvement. In August, Khan complained of fluctuating blood pressure, mental stress and headache, after which doctors recommended an angiography. Now, this comes in the backdrop of the party announcing a long march to Islamabad on September 27 which was supposed to be joined by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa CM Sohail Afridi and nearly two million people. Last week, PTI workers hit the streets to demand the ex-PM's release as well as in protest against the rising corruption. Earlier on August 5, hundreds of PTI supporters gathered in Karachi to mark the third anniversary of his detention. A heavy contingent of riot police charged towards the demonstrators, fired tear gas, beat them and dragged them towards police vehicles. Now, the jail authorities presented a rather rosy picture Of the PTI founder's health in Pakistan's apex court. For instance, they claimed that his vision has returned to normal after treatment. They also added that medical officers visit him thrice in jail and check his vitals including blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation. According to the authorities, Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have met in jail 84 times so far. It is worth noting that the Asim Munir-led military establishment started a brutal crackdown on PTI after its party workers allegedly attacked military installations in May 2023. At present, Khan and Bushra Bibi are serving a 17-year jail term in the Toshakhana-II case. Besides this, the couple has also been convicted in the Toshakhana-I, Al-qadir trust and the unlawful marriage cases. After Khan was arrested, PTI accused Munir of rigging the 2024 general election. To begin with, PTI's candidates were barred From contesting on the party's name and 'bat' symbol. Despite this, PTI-linked independents emerged as the single-largest group with 93 seats. https://www.wionews.com/videos/pak-sc-orders-imran-khan-s-transfer-from-jail-to-hospital-curbs-media-amid-death-rumours-1787073359661/embed If not for blatant rigging, PTI believes that the real seat tally was 180, whereas the ruling PMLN won only 17 seats in reality. At a time when Pak Army is batting for creation of more provinces, Is today's development a fresh bid by the Pak establishment to reach out to PTI? Does this also spell trouble for PMLN and PPP? One thing is clear though. Khan's resilience has put the Munir-led hybrid regime in a serious spot of bother.

Even as Pakistan's pile of troubles keeps getting taller from severe inflation to the massive security turmoil, and multiple other issues, it appears that the Asim Munir-led hybrid regime is living in a parallel universe. Although British Raj ended in 1947, the colonial-era hangover still persists. Take a look at these visuals from an Independence Day parade held in Islamabad. Two officials, capital development authority chairman Sohail Ashraf and Islamabad Inspector General of Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi arrived at the event in a horse-drawn buggy. While the attendees were reportedly prompted to applaud the officials, no one clapped. Given that only the President of Pakistan usually rides in a buggy on special occasions, people on social media came down heavily on these bureaucrats for perpetuating a colonial-era tradition while preaching austerity. From journalists to key political figures, the Shehbaz Sharif-led government came in for scathing criticism. Shireen Mazari, who served as the human rights minister during Imran Khan's tenure as PM asserted that it was unbelievably stupid to try and revive such colonial practices. Ex-Sindh governor Mohammad Zubair compared this VIP culture with Norway's foreign minister who was seen handling his own luggage during his recent official visit to Pakistan. The criticism was so intense that Pakistan's interior minister Mohsin Naqvi issued a clarification. While refusing to condemn the VIP culture, Naqvi claimed that the bureaucrats were not at fault. He said and I am quoting him, “The chief guest and I were delayed due to the president's meeting with the Prime Minister." While the buggy was arranged for the chief guest, who is believed to be national assembly speaker Ayaz Sadiq, the delay in his arrival led to a change in plans. Naqvi revealed that the bureaucrats used the buggy on his direct instructions. However, this explanation left a key question unanswered-Why were public funds and resources used to arrange a horse buggy in the first place? Why couldn't the bureaucrats have used normal vehicles to start the event? Naqvi's clarification also ignored broader concerns about elite privilege at a time when Pakistan is going through turmoil. Now, this is not the first time when Naqvi's ego and insistence on protocol has come to the fore. After winning the Asia Cup in September last year, the Indian cricket team refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi who also serves as the President of the Asian Cricket Council amid diplomatic tensions with Pakistan. Instead of handing over the trophy to India, through other means, Pakistan's interior minister took it away and locked it in the ACC headquarters in Dubai. Meanwhile, hundreds of people took part in nationwide protests and marches organised by Jamaat-e-Islami with petrol price soaring to over 325 Pakistani rupees per litre. Raising concerns over rising fuel prices and high taxes, the protesters urged the government to announce relief measures for citizens struggling with the cost of living. With Pakistan's ruling class adopting a tone-deaf approach and unwilling to effectively engage with people's concerns, it seems that the internal dissatisfaction is only poised to grow.

Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels are escalating their campaign against Saudi Arabia, targeting Saudi interests and threatening critical energy and maritime infrastructure.

The latest escalation comes after Saudi Arabia signed a new defence pact with Türkiye and Pakistan, raising questions over how the new alliance could respond to attacks from the Houthis. Reuters reported that a Houthi drone attack targeted Saudi Aramco’s Jazan refinery, with the fire subsequently extinguished and no casualties reported.

The report also states that many of Pakistan's reforms remain largely on paper and have not resulted in significant improvements. Pakistan's public healthcare system is experiencing increased pressure as three major government hospitals in Rawalpindi have collectively outstanding dues of approximately Rs 2.2 billion to pharmaceutical suppliers, endangering the availability of free medicines for patients. According to The Express Tribune, despite the Punjab government's efforts to provide free medicines in emergency wards, outpatient departments, and hospital wards, the latest financial distribution has dipped far short of requirements. During the final weeks of the fiscal year, officials released only Rs 130 million for medicine. Under the allocation, Benazir Bhutto General Hospital received Rs 50 million, Holy Family Hospital was granted Rs 60 million, while Rawalpindi Teaching Hospital obtained Rs 20 million. However, despite efforts to manage expenses, the hospitals continue to face severe financial strain. Holy Family Hospital has pending dues of nearly Rs 900 million, while Benazir Bhutto General Hospital's liabilities stand at around Rs 850 million. Rawalpindi Teaching Hospital, meanwhile, owes close to Rs 270 million. The mounting debt has raised concerns among pharmaceutical suppliers, many of whom are becoming reluctant to provide medicines, medical gases and disposable medical products on credit.
Funding in the 2025-26 fiscal year
Funding allocations for the 2025-26 fiscal year have further intensified concerns. Holy Family Hospital requested Rs 1.5 billion for medicines and essential supplies, but received only Rs 400 million. Benazir Bhutto General Hospital was allocated Rs 380 million against a similar request of Rs 1.5 billion, while Rawalpindi Teaching Hospital received Rs 230 million despite seeking Rs 800 million. Together, the three hospitals cater to over 10,000 patients each day through emergency and outpatient services and offer a total of 2,580 beds. However, the growing demand for healthcare services continues to exceed the resources available. These hospitals also serve patients from different regions, including Islamabad, Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan (PoGB), and other parts of the Rawalpindi Division. The widening gap between healthcare needs and government funding has escalated concerns about the sustainability of the public health infrastructure of the country.
