Pakistan on Thursday lifted the ban on the import of non-essential and luxury items. Finance Minister Miftah Ismail said that earlier the ban was introduced by the Shehbaz Sharif government primarily to provide basic necessities to the people as the country had a limited amount of dollars. The move has been made to meet a condition of the International Monetary Fund ahead of a meeting later this month to decide on a bailout package for the cash-strapped nation, PTI reported.

Ismail said that the removal of the ban would mean a price on importers as heavy duty would be imposed to make the import costly. He further added that the government was scrapping the import ban due to an international requirement, but the regulatory duty that will be imposed on the non-essential imported items will be three times higher than the current levels.

"We will impose such heavy duties that these items cannot be imported (easily) or at least in their finished form. I don't have enough dollars, so I will prioritise cotton, edible oil, and wheat. I do not prioritise iphones or cars," he said.

The heavy duties will be imposed on completely built-up (CBU) commodities, cars, mobile phones, and electronic appliances and apart from them, imported fish, meat, purse, and other such non-luxury items.

Talking about how high the duties might go, he cited an example that if someone wants to import a car worth Rs 60 million, it will end up costing them Rs 300-400 million. Ismail added that the government's objective was not just to allow imports, but it was to fulfil international and IMF demands, while also keeping the current account deficit in check.

Notably, the IMF's executive board will meet on August 29 to approve a bailout package for Pakistan, including the pending disbursement of about $1.18 billion. Ismail said the IMF wanted Pakistan to ensure funds amounting to $6 billion for which it needs to secure $4 billion in funding from other countries, which has been arranged. Prime Minister Sharif would visit Qatar soon to sign the agreements, he added.

According to The Express Tribune, Sharif made the comments while speaking with Neil Hawkins, the recently appointed Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan.

"A just and peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant UNSC resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people is indispensable for peace and stability in the region," said PM Shehbaz.

In order to achieve lasting peace in South Asia, he emphasised that the international community must play a facilitative role in this respect, according to The Express Tribune.

Sharif made the remarks following former PM Imran Khan's praise of India for its autonomous foreign policy and criticism of the west for criticising India for purchasing Russian oil.

Imran Khan has accused a US-led foreign conspiracy against him since his overthrow in April. Imran Khan has frequently praised India for refusing to give in to Western pressure and continuing to buy Russian oil despite being a "strategic friend" of the US, even as he criticised the Joe Biden administration.

"We had spoken to Russia about buying cheaper oil but this government has no courage to say no to US pressure. Fuel prices are skyrocketing, people are below the poverty line. I am against this slavery," Khan said.

"If India which got independence at the same time as Pakistan and if New Delhi can take a firm stand and make their foreign policy as per the need of its people then who are they (Shehbaz Sharif government) who are toeing the line," Imran Khan said at the gathering.

Pakistan's de-facto Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif could be returning home as soon as next month. Sharif who is in a self-imposed exile in London on medical grounds is looking to make a comeback as the PM .

Amid the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, the United Kingdom has been supporting Volodymyr Zelensky and his troops with arms and ammunition. While UK's military aid to Ukraine has reached $2.8 billion so far, a rather secret military route appears to have opened up to allegedly supply arms, and it involves Pakistan.

Curiously enough, the reports in this regard came out even as Pakistan Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa visited UK, as part of a global trip that also includes stops at Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. He is also expected to visit the US.

A Twitter handle by the name of 'The Intel Consortium' recently published a tweet thread using open source intelligence, where it was revealed that Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) was supplying some kind of military equipment to the war-torn country via a running air bridge. The original tweet appears to have disappeared, but screenshots and tweet thread are still available online.

The running air bridge has three points which RAF's C-17A Globemaster III (call sign: ZZ173) has been using to make daily trips. According to the thread, the Globemaster is using the Nur Khan Air Base in Rawalpindi, Pakistan to Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport in Romania via RAF base Akrotiri in Cyprus.

According to data sourced from commercially available flight tracking software, the aircraft made daily trips on this route from August 6 to August 15, till the report was published.

It is pertinent to note that while entering Pakistan, the Globemaster avoided Iran and Afghanistan airspace and used the air route through Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Oman.

Moreover, the military aircraft spent an average of one hour and 30 minutes at the Romanian Airport, about three-four hours in Cyprus and almost 12-20 hours at the Pakistani garrison city of Rawalpindi.

However, no official word has been released by the authorities of the three countries regarding this rather secretive air route. It is also not clear what kind of equipment the cargo plane was carrying.

The Twitter account, however, had its own theory regarding the military piece of equipment being ferried.

“Ukrainian war planners have said the best aid they can get is 155mm artillery ammunition. The US recently sent 75,000 rounds of it to Ukraine. Guess who else makes that ammunition: Pakistan Ordinance Factory,” 'the Intel Consortium said in a tweet.

“Pakistan also has over 320 Ukrainian T-80UD tanks in service, and a completely developed ecosystem of their maintenance, operation, ammunition, and spare parts,” the account further claimed.

The account noted that the Globemaster can carry C-17A can carry 77,500 kilogrammes of cargo in one trip and so far, with six round trips, it had carried almost 465,000 kilogrammes of 'something' to Romania and beyond.

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar blasted Marcus Stoinis after the Australian all-rounder accused Pakistan pacer Mohammad Hasnain of chucking in the ongoing The Hundred tournament. Stoinis, who is playing for the Southern Brave in The Hundred seemingly accused Oval Invincibles' pacer Hasnain of chucking with a hand gesture during the clash between the two sides on Sunday.

The incident happened after Stoinis was dismissed by Hasnain on 37 off 27 balls. The Australian all-rounder was not happy after his dismissal and expressed his frustration by suggesting that the bowler was chucking. On his way back to the dugout, Stoinis was seen imitating Hasnain's bowling action trying to accuse him of chucking.

Stoinis was slammed by many for his gesture, including Akhtar, who lashed out at the Aussie star and called his gesture shameful. Akhtar said no player should be allowed to accuse a bowler of chucking when his action has been cleared by the ICC.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the world in crisis can't afford a Cold War between the United States and China. In an interview with Newsweek published on Monday (August 15), Sharif said that he has offered Pakistan's services as a mediator to bring together both the nations.

The Pakistani prime minister said: "If China and the US so desire, Pakistan would be happy to play a positive role to bridge their differences, as we had done in the past."

The interview focused on the urgent need for greater international cooperation amid the ongoing crises like the escalating US-China tensions, the Russia-Ukraine war, impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, etc.

During the interview that was conducted via email, Shehbaz Sharif characterised Pakistan's foreign policy as one of "friendliness and goodwill towards all the nations of the world".

He said, "Pakistan has traditionally maintained good relations with China and the United States. Historically, it was Pakistan that acted as a bridge in opening up the relationship between the United States and the Peoples' Republic of China."

He said that Pakistan has always highlighted the need to avoid a confrontational approach. He said, "Bloc politics and any drift towards cold war will not produce any positive results, and in fact would be counterproductive for growth and stability."

"Pakistan strongly believes that inter-state relations should be based on mutual respect and peaceful resolution of disputes by upholding the principles of the UN charter and international law," he added.

Asked what would happen if nations were asked to choose sides in case any crisis escalates, especially considering the fact that Pakistan enjoys close ties with China, PM Shehbaz said that while the relationship may be "very special", Pakistan and the US "have also maintained a longstanding historic bilateral relationship which covers all issues of mutual interest."

He said, "The world can ill-afford descent into another era of Cold War or bloc politics. I believe polarisation would have serious consequences for the global economy afflicted by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine crisis."

Gravitas: Who will be Pakistan's next Army Chief?

Pakistan’s former three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif will end his self-imposed exile and return to Pakistan in September, senior members from his party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz PML (N) have claimed.

According to Geo News, PML-N Punjab spokesperson and federal minister Javed Latif said that the "doctors" have announced their decision and Nawaz will come back in line with their call, and added that they would make sure that Nawaz is not sent to jail upon return.

"The doctors change their opinion with time. The people are his doctors; the nation has announced its decision that Nawaz Sharif should come back," Latif was quoted as saying.

Nawaz’s brother Shehbaz is the current Prime Minister of Pakistan and was looking after the affairs of the PML (N) in his absence. Nawaz's presence is expected to boost the fortunes of PML-N as the party leaders think that his presence in the field is necessary to stop Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

Sharif, who is in London on medical grounds, has been looking to make a comeback as the PML-N government is considering relevant legislation to ease the former PM’s return.

Nawaz was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2018 in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption case. Later, he was charged in Avenfield properties reference where he was sentenced to 11 years in prison and fined 8 million pounds (Rs 1.3 billion).

PML-N spokesperson Latif said that they would not allow the party chief to go back to jail upon his return, adding that they felt "injustice" was committed against the party.

He further claimed that Nawaz was disqualified on the instructions and directions of former chief justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar.

Gravitas: Pakistan marks Independence day amid financial crisis

It is almost time for Pakistan's government to choose the next army chief. A senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader hinted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif could start talking about the appointment by the end of August and possibly make a decision by mid-September.

It is customary for the General Headquarters or GHQ to send to the defence ministry a list of four to five senior-most lieutenant-generals, along with their profiles, so that the prime minister can choose the best candidate for the position.

Lt-Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza, one of the senior-most among the four candidates, is the undisputed front-runner for any of the two positions of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), Dawn newspaper quoted a military source as saying. Mirza is a native of the Sindh Regiment. He had a distinguished army career, especially over the last few years in high command roles.

PML-N leaders stated that they had essentially chosen to make the appointment based on seniority. However, another faction believes that the PM may just follow the incumbent leader’s recommendations.

Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, the current COAS is all set to retire in November. The army chief's tenure is meant for three years but Bajwa was given an additional three-year term in 2019. However, the general still qualifies for another term. There is a possibility that the incumbent might be interested in or looking for another extension. But as per a military source close to Bajwa, he informed those close to him that he would retire in November, the newspaper reported.

Among the current senior brass, Lt. Gen. Azhar Abbas has the most experience in Indian affairs. He belongs to the Baloch regiment. Currently serving as the Chief of General Staff (CGS), he leads the army and has direct control over the intelligence and operations directorates, Dawn reported. He had previously commanded Rawalpindi-based X Corps and is Kashmir-centric, demonstrating the army’s entire confidence in him.

Lt Gen Faiz Hamid, a member of the Baloch Regiment, is another of the most talked-about candidates for the top job. He was a centre of a dispute between former PM Imran Khan and the COAS in the final stages, where the latter had chosen him for the post of commander of the Peshawar Corps and the former wasn’t ready to remove him. According to analysts cited by Dawn, PML-N leaders may find it impossible or challenging to consider him for the position of COAS.

Another candidate, Lt. Gen. Mohammed Amir, is a member of the Artillery Regiment, and currently in charge of the XXX corps in Gujranwala. He was formerly the GHQ’s adjutant general. He has extensive experience in both GHQ and command roles, having also held the position of director-general of Staff Duties at the COAS secretariat. According to Dawn, his professional path has put him in close proximity to the current political decision-makers.
