The imposition of fines and stalling of various projects have increased economic mistrust between Pakistan and China, at a time when the former nation is facing a financial crisis. A Pakistan civil court had imposed a USD 2.48 million fine on China National Petroleum Corporation after it was alleged of violating the contract signed with Petroleum Exploration (Pvt) Ltd.

At least 12, mostly Policemen, were killed by multiple explosions caused by a fire in a munitions cache, at a Police Station. The explosions levelled the specialist counter-terrorism station in Kabal town of Swat Valley, in the northwestern region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The incident came amid a string of high-toll militant assaults on police, many linked to the domestic Taliban branch, and initially sparked fears of a fresh attack. Police said a short-circuit in a basement storing grenades & other explosives was the cause of the blasts. Since the start of the year, 2 attacks on large Police bases have been linked to the Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. Pakistan has witnessed a dramatic uptick in attacks since Taliban seized control of Kabul. TTP was founded in 2007, when Pakistani militants fighting alongside the Taliban splintered off to focus attacks on Islamabad as payback for supporting the U.S. Invasion after the 9/11 attacks.

World Malaria Day is observed on April 25. Usually, the day is seen as an opportunity to celebrate the progress in the fight against Malaria. But, this year, it is to sound the alarm. Heavy rainfall in Pakistan and the African nation of Malawi has resulted in an increase in the number of Malaria infections and deaths. As per the World Health Organisation, cases in Pakistan last year, after devastating floods left a third of the country under water, rose four-fold to 1.6 million.

Malaria cases are surging in Pakistan and Malawi | Here's why

A Pakistani court recently imposed a $2.48 million fine on China National Petroleum Corporation. The case relating to the violation of contract norms has again brought forth increasing economic mistrust between the two countries. Remember, many projects under the so-called China-Pakistan economic corridor have been stalled, turning into financial liabilities. There have been unresolved differences between the Pakistani and Chinese governments. China has slowed investments in large infrastructure projects. Beijing reportedly sees key projects in Pakistan as vulnerable to local politics, and the returns on investments have been delayed. The differences between the two governments, though not new, have been kept behind closed doors. Terror attacks aimed at Chinese projects have also impacted economic cooperation between Beijing and Islamabad. Pakistan’s financial woes have further decreased its capacity to fulfil financial obligations in various projects.

At least 16 people, mostly policemen were killed by multiple explosions caused by fire in an ammunition store, at a Pakistan police station. Around 50 people were found injured. Pakistan's PM says, the nature of the blasts is being investigated.

Explained: Dying animals, lack of funds - distressing state of Pakistan zoos

In a concerning development, the United Nations-designated terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) has been seen openly collecting funds in Peshawar, Pakistan. This has raised alarm bells about the resurgence of extremist groups in the country, particularly after its removal from the Financial Action Task Force's (FATF) grey list.

A Twitter user recounted their experience during the Eid prayer where they witnessed members of the banned outfit collecting funds openly in Peshawar, in the presence of security personnel. "Members of a banned outflit were collecting money openly in Peshawar in the presence of security personnel. My father, my brothers and I were there to pray Eid prayer," said the user. The fundraising took place in Hayatabad (Bagh-e-Naran) by JeM, which is responsible for several terrorist attacks, including the 2001 Indian Parliament attack and the 2019 Pulwama attack.

Another Twitter user expressed his disappointment and shared that such fundraising is a common sight in Pakistan. The 3.5-ton African elephant, who could barely walk due to a large growth between her back legs, caught the attention of Four Paws International after images were shared on social media. pic.twitter.com/YKpNur3wbP — AFP News Agency (@AFP) April 6, 2023 × Alarming situation at zoos in Pakistan A statement by Four Paws International said the Karachi zoo "does not fulfill international standards" and is not equipped to take appropriate care of elephants. The organisation expressed support for a forced closure. The condition of animals kept in zoos continues to worsen across Pakistan. In April 2020, a court ordered the only zoo in Pakistan's capital Islamabad to shut down after poor facilities and mistreatment of the animals there were revealed. It is the same zoo where the elephant Kaavan was kept. Kaavan, an Asian elephant, was airlifted to retirement in Cambodia in a project spearheaded by US popstar and actor Cher. In March, Karachi zoo's Golden Tabby tiger died at 21 and according to sources, it had been ill for a long time and apparently failed to receive proper care. Some 206 birds and 76 other animals died in 2017, while 122 birds and 45 other animals perished in 2018. Multiple deaths were also reported in the Peshawar zoo since it was inaugurated in February 2018.
Pakistan has made its first order for discounted Russian crude oil, according to an agreement between Islamabad and Moscow, the country's petroleum minister said.
