All you need to know about Australian Open 2024: Defending champions, live streaming, prize money

World No.1 Novak Djokovic is welcome to the age-old competition of Rafael Nadal as he gets ready for 2024. The Serbian added three more Grand Slam titles to his unprecedented record in 2023 while Nadal was nursing an injury during the period. However, with Nadal set to return in next month’s Australia Open in Melbourne, Djokovic is ready to reignite the rivalry as he reckons the Spaniard is hungry for more titles and could catch him for most Grand Slam titles.

<h2>Novak ready for Nadal</h2>

"I always expect him (Nadal) to play at his best, to be honest. Many times they've signed him out, they've done that with me as well. But we've proved them wrong," Djokovic told journalists on the sidelines of an exhibition match against Carlos Alcaraz in Riyadh.

"He's not a kind of a player that will come back to the tour just to play -- let's say -- on a medium level, play a few matches. He wants to win titles, he wants to be the best, that's why he is who he is: a legend of our sport. I'm sure that his training and preparation is done with an intention to win a Grand Slam,” continued Djokovic.

The duo of Nadal and Djokovic has a very narrow head-to-head record with the Serbia leading 30-29 in their 59 meetings. Currently, Nadal has 22 Grand Slam titles and managed to play one Grand Slam in 2023. His return could reignite the rivalry between the arch-rivals who have 46 Grand Slam titles in between them.

In 2023, Djokovic lost only one Grand Slam match which came in the final of the Wimbledon. He was beaten by Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling final&nbsp;at the Center Court and saw Djokovic miss out on an annual Grand Slam. He would later win the year-end ATP World Tour final to add another feather to his cap.

<h2>Special year for Djokovic</h2>

Starting the year with 21 Grand Slam titles, the World No. 1 won the Australian Open in January having missed the 2022 edition due to deportation. He was not vaccinated and was deported just days before the start of the 2022 edition. However, he had no issues in clinching his record-equaling 22nd title at the Rod Laver Arena in January. He then broke Rafael Nadal’s record for most Grand Slam titles (men’s singles) when he won the French Open in June.

Novak Djokovic lifts lid on Rafael Nadal rivalry ahead of 2024 return, says ‘he wants to win titles’

Novak Djokovic has no plans to hang up his racket any time soon and is hoping he might be able to emulate American football great Tom Brady by extending his career well past his 40th birthday, the 36-year-old Serbian said on Tuesday.

Quarterback Brady played 23 seasons in the National Football League, winning seven Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before finally calling it quits at the age of 45 earlier this year.

World number one Djokovic, who is preparing for the start of his 22nd season as a professional by playing an exhibition match against Carlos Alcaraz in Riyadh on Wednesday, said he had already learned plenty from Brady.

"Tom Brady is a great example of a champion in his sport and someone that has had such a great career and longevity," the 24-times Grand Slam champion told reporters in the Saudi capital.

"He has put a lot of hours and a lot of time into self-care, into recovery, into making sure that in a way every aspect of his body and mind is covered so that he can have a long-lasting, successful career.

"I know him personally and I learned a lot from him, from his example, and hopefully I can have a career that goes up to 40 or maybe even beyond - let's see."

Brady was in Djokovic's box at Roland Garros in June to watch his friend win the French Open, one of three Grand Slam trophies the Serbian captured in 2023 along with the Australian and U.S. Open titles.

"I feel great in my own body right now and I've been playing some really high-quality tennis," Djokovic added. "2023 was one of the best seasons I've had in my life and why stop while you're still playing great? So I'll keep going and take (each) year, one by one, and see how far I go."

Alcaraz beat the Serbian in a five-set thriller to win this year's other Grand Slam title at Wimbledon and Djokovic welcomed the rise of the 20-year-old Spaniard, especially as Roger Federer has retired and Rafa Nadal is entering his last season.

"Our era is coming to an end, but you have Alcaraz emerging which is great, and I was very happy that I had four very good matches with him this year," Djokovic said.

"Each match attracted a lot of attention, we had a lot of great highlights and it's good, it's good for our sport."

Djokovic will make his final preparations for a tilt at an 11th Australian Open title by representing his country in the United Cup in Perth and Sydney in the first week of the new year.

I was really feeling very dominant on the tour. It's quite different circumstances this year compared to all the other years because I played, what, 10, 11 tournaments this year,” Djokovic said as quoted by Eurosport.

Overall, especially in the last couple months, I haven't lost a match since Wimbledon. So, I've been feeling great on the court and playing really well. But it's hard to compare,” Djokovic added.

Novak Djokovic turns 37 next year but the Serbian says his appetite for success will only increase with younger challengers awakening the "beast" in him. The world number one enjoyed an extraordinary 2023 by winning three out of the four Grand Slams to take his tally to 24, two more than his great rival Rafa Nadal and four more than the retired Roger Federer.

Djokovic did not have it all his own way, however, with 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz denying him a fifth-straight Wimbledon crown in a thrilling final and 22-year-old Jannik Sinner dashing his hopes of Davis Cup glory. "The young guys who are very hungry and very inspired to play their best tennis against me is an additional motivation," Djokovic said on CBS News programme "60 Minutes". "I think they kind of awaken a beast in me."

Djokovic beat Alcaraz in three of their four meetings this year - including the French Open semi-finals where the Spaniard suffered full-body cramps - but the Serb said his young rival had become a real threat. "He's as a complete of a player as I have seen in ages," Djokovic said, adding that he used his defeat in the Wimbledon final as motivation for the U.S. hardcourt swing, where he won at Cincinnati and Flushing Meadows. "It's a great opportunity for me to reinvent myself and really push harder than I ever did."

Nadal will make a comeback&nbsp;after a long gap. He hasn't played any form of tennis since his second-round exit at the Australian Open early this year. He even bowed out of the 2023 French Open, owing to a hip injury, which led&nbsp;to his ouster from the top 100 for the first time in 20 years.&nbsp;

Ahead of his comeback, Nadal said in a video posted on social media, "I don't know at what level (he will play at), I don't know what to expect, I have no idea, but I don't care right now. A sell-out crowd in Turin's Pala Alpitour had hoped to cheer the 22-year-old Sinner to the biggest title of his career but Djokovic was simply in a different league. The world number one dropped only two points on serve in the opening set and once he had broken Sinner's serve in the fourth game it was largely one-way traffic.

Tennis: World no. 1 Novak Djokovic to feature in United Cup 2024, veteran Nadal to miss out

World number one Novak&nbsp;Djokovic&nbsp;fought&nbsp;back&nbsp;to beat Tallon Griekspoor 4-6 7-6(2) 6-4 on Thursday and reach the&nbsp;Paris&nbsp;Masters&nbsp;quarter-finals. The Serb, unlike in his slick second-round win, looked rusty in only his second singles match since playing in the Davis Cup six weeks ago, losing a 4-1 lead in the first set and squandering three break opportunities early in the second.

The 24-times Grand Slam winner mounted a comeback, however, as he convincingly won the tiebreak and took the decider to continue his quest for a record-extending seventh title in&nbsp;Paris. "I run out of steam, I've been struggling the last couple of days with my stomach, I didn't feel myself at all on court," the 36-year-old&nbsp;Djokovic&nbsp;said.

"It could've run easily on his way, but I played a good tiebreak and started to feel better on the third. I'm really happy I overcame this challenge." Fourth seed Jannik Sinner withdrew from the tournament, citing health reasons after his second-round clash against Mackenzie McDonald ended at 2:37 am on Thursday.

The Italian was due to play Australia's Alex de Minaur, who will now face in-form Andrey Rublev, the fifth-seed Russian who earned his 20th Masters 1000 win of the season by beating qualifier Botic Van de Zandschulp 6-3 6-3.

Seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas secured his spot at the ATP&nbsp;Finals&nbsp;with a 7-6(2) 6-4 win over German 10th seed Alexander Zverev. Poland's Hubert Hurkacz, the 11th seed, remained in contention for a spot at the tournament in Turin by beating Argentine Francisco Cerundolo 6-4 6-3.

He will meet Grigor Dimitrov for a place in the semi-finals&nbsp;after the Bulgarian routed Alexander Bublik 6-2 6-2. In the last act of the evening, defending champion and sixth seed Holger Rune claimed a comfortable 6-3 6-3 win over Daniel Altmaier. Tennis: World Number one Novak Djokovic beats Tallon Griekspoor, enters Paris Masters quarter-finals

Novak Djokovic edged out Holger Rune on Friday to avenge his defeat in last year's Paris Masters final and reach the last four, while Stefanos Tsitsipas set up a meeting with Grigor Dimitrov. World number one Djokovic missed a match point in the second set but eventually claimed a 7-5, 6-7 (3/7), 6-4 win over Denmark's Rune in the quarter-finals after more than two-and-three-quarter hours on court at Bercy Arena.

The Serbian star is playing in his first ATP Tour event since lifting a record 24th Grand Slam title in New York in September. Djokovic, the record six-time Paris champion, will face Andrey Rublev for a place in the final after the Russian defeated Alex de Minaur 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

"It was quite a similar match to last year's final, it was anybody's game in every set," Djokovic said. "I played an awful tie-break in the second set, probably the worst one this year. But again credit to him for staying mentally tough and playing solid.

"We have similar games. Move well, defend well and all-round players." The 36-year-old claimed his second career victory against Rune, who is now working with Djokovic's former coach Boris Becker, after suffering two successive defeats by the world number seven.

"It was strange seeing Boris in the opposing box," added Djokovic. "I wish Holger and him all the best." Djokovic snatched an opening set which was largely dominated by serve with a break in the 12th game.

He saw a match point come and go on the Rune serve when leading 5-4 in the second set, before the 20-year-old went on to produce a series of brilliant points in a tie-break to force a decider.

But Djokovic was clinical in the third set and a single break in the third game was enough to take him through. Djokovic has now won 16 successive matches since losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final. He has won all eight of his previous Paris Masters semi-finals.

<h2>Tsitsipas powers through&nbsp;</h2>

Tsitsipas powered his way into the semis with a dominant 6-3, 6-4 victory over Karen Khachanov. It was the 300th win of his career and gave the Greek, ranked sixth in the world, a semi-final match-up with Dimitrov who overcame Hubert Hurkacz 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

Tsitsipas, who also reached the last four a year ago when he lost to Djokovic, has progressed to the same stage without dropping a set. "It's working well. I feel like I can mix up play," said Tsitsipas.&nbsp;

Tsitsipas has already qualified for the end-of-season ATP Finals as one of the year's top eight players but defeat for Hurkacz against Dimitrov ruled the Pole out of contention. The last two places for the event in Turin later this month will be taken by Alexander Zverev and Rune.

In the last few weeks, the 32-year-old Dimitrov has reached the semi-finals in Chengdu, a quarter-final in Beijing and the semi-finals of the Masters event in Shanghai. His path to the last four in Paris included a shock defeat of world number three&nbsp;Daniil Medvedev in the second round.

"My body is feeling well for now, that's the most important thing," said Dimitrov."My head is good. If I'm able to play like that on a consistent basis throughout every game, I put myself in a position to do better." Dimitrov last reached the semi-finals in Paris in 2019 when he lost to Djokovic.

Tennis: World Number one Novak Djokovic beats Holger Rune in Paris Masters quarter-finals

Italy's Jannik Sinner saved matchpoints to upset Novak Djokovic 6-2 2-6 7-5 and help his country to draw level with Serbia in their Davis Cup semi-final on Saturday after Miomir Kecmanovic had put the 2010 champions ahead by beating Lorenzo Musetti 6-7(7) 6-2 6-1.

Italy are aiming to return to the final having last reached that stage a quarter of a century ago and the 1976 champions can succeed if they prevail in the deciding doubles contest at a packed Martin Carpena Arena.

Sinner was facing Djokovic for the third time in 11 days and the world number four, who beat the top-ranked Serbian early in the ATP Finals before losing to him in the title clash, made a quick start to ease through the opening set with two breaks of serve.

The 22-year-old, who had sparked Italy's comeback in their quarter-final against the Netherlands, took his foot off the gas in the next set to allow Djokovic back in but kept chipping away in the hope of sealing a second win over him in six meetings.

He saved three match points while down 4-5 in the decider and then pulled off one of the most remarkable wins of his career to spark wild celebrations in the stands.

Defeat was a bitter blow for Djokovic, the winner of three of the four Grand Slams in a spectacular year, but the 36-year-old will be back for the decider later on Saturday to help Serbia try to reach a third final.

Serbia, who outclassed Britain in the last eight, last won the premier men's team competition in 2010.

Kecmanovic had earlier rallied from a set down to power past Musetti and leave Serbia one win away from their third final in the elite men's team competition and first since 2013.

Musetti made a slow start against the high-flying Kecmanovic and narrowly avoided going down a double break, before the world number 27 found his range to level the first set at 5-5 and come from behind again in the tiebreak to clinch it.

But Kecmanovic's level barely dropped following the setback, as the world number 55 breezed through the second set and broke twice in the third for a 4-0 lead, which was enough for the 24-year-old to see off Musetti who was battling a thigh issue.

The winner of the tie will face Australia in Sunday's final after Lleyton Hewitt's side beat Finland.

Tennis - Jannik Sinner stuns Novak Djokovic to keep Italy alive in Davis Cup semi-final

Serbia have booked their place in the semifinals of the Davis Cup 2023 as they got the better of Great Britain late Thursday (Nov 23) evening. Backed by the excellent form of Djokovic and company, Serbia beat Britain 2-0 to book a place in the semifinal where they will face Italy. However, away from the shadow&nbsp;of the win, Djokovic made headlines for all the wrong reasons. He was seen shouting at fans while in an interview after the match as the Great Britain fans were reported to be playing drums.&nbsp;

With a place in the semis up for grabs, Djokovic got the better of Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-4 to secure a 2-0 triumph for the Serbs. However, fans chanted Djokovic’s name for all the wrong reasons which left the 24-time Grand Slam champion annoyed. The Serbian has had his share of troubles on the court in the past that have seen him disqualified from the big tournaments. At the 2020 US Open, the 36-year-old was disqualified for hitting a line judge and saw his bid come to an end that year.

WATCH | Djokovic loses cool after Davis Cup win vs Britain, tells noisy crowd to 'shut up' during interview

World number one Novak Djokovic steered Serbia into the Davis Cup semi-finals as he beat Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-4 to secure a 2-0 triumph over Great Britain in Malaga on Thursday.

The 36-year-old rebuked British fans at the end of the match as they tried to down out his victory speech.

After Miomir Kecmanovic edged Jack Draper 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (8/6) in the opening clash 24-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic outclassed a stubborn Norrie to book a date with Jannik Sinner's Italy on Saturday, after they beat the Netherlands 2-1.

Djokovic, who beat Sinner to win the ATP Finals on Sunday in Turin before flying to the Costa del Sol, celebrated his landmark 400th week at number one with a straight sets win over Norrie, the captains agreeing not to play the redundant doubles.

British fans outnumbered Serbs at the sold-out Martin Carpena arena but the relentless Djokovic silenced them with his 21st consecutive Davis Cup singles win.

"Keep going, keep going," said Djokovic, addressing British fans trying to drown him out with drums as he spoke after his win.

"Learn how to respect people, learn how to respect players, learn how to behave yourselves."

Djokovic said earlier this week winning the competition is one of his "greatest goals" in a year where he has lifted seven titles, including three Grand Slams.

The veteran star was part of Serbia's only Davis Cup triumph in 2010 and his country eliminated 10-time champions Britain, who faced an uphill struggle after Kecmanovic defeated Draper in two tie-breaks.

Britain, without the injured Andy Murray and Dan Evans, were hoping Draper could give them a cushion.

Serbia captain Viktor Troicki selected Kecmanovic over the higher ranked Laslo Djere and the world number 55 raised his game in return.

Draper staved off two set points to hold for 5-5 but unravelled in the first tie-break, double faulting twice and miscalculating a drop shot to hand the Serbian the set on a plate.

After composing himself the second set was even tighter than the first, with neither player able to find a break again.

The near-flawless Kecmanovic triumphed when Draper lashed a forehand wide and then pushed a return into the net.

"It was definitely very close, and just the atmosphere made it, I think, even more tense than it probably would be if it was like an ATP match or something," said the Serb.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic silences Britain, helps Serbia into Davis Cup semis; to face Jannik Sinner in last four

Novak&nbsp;Djokovic&nbsp;won a record-breaking seventh ATP Finals title on Sunday after beating local hero Jannik Sinner 6-3, 6-3 in Turin.

World number one&nbsp;Djokovic&nbsp;moves clear of retired great Roger Federer in victories at the season-ending tournament after denying Italian Sinner a triumph on home soil.

Djokovic&nbsp;came into the Finals at the end of a year which has brought three Grand Slams, taking his total to an all-time best of 24, and a 40th Masters 1000 title.

And he has crowned an incredible season -- in which he also reached the Wimbledon final -- with yet another record, comfortably seeing off two of the game's best young players in the process.

Sinner was bidding to become the first ever Italian to claim a Finals crown and looked like the right man to do it after his impressive group stage win over&nbsp;Djokovic.

But the 22-year-old, like Carlos Alcaraz in Saturday's semi-final, simply could not handle&nbsp;Djokovic, a man on a mission who hit his best form at exactly the right time in the tournament.

It is a testament however to how far Sinner has come in the past year that he had&nbsp;Djokovic's tournament fate in his hands at the end of the group stage, when defeat by Holger Rune would have sent the Serb home early.

Sinner saved&nbsp;Djokovic's skin and in the end paid for it in the final, but the quality of his performances at the Pala Alpitour has been a cause for much optimism in Italy and suggests that he should be a Grand Slam contender next season.

<h2>Djokovic&nbsp;in control</h2>

Djokovic&nbsp;took control early in the match, breaking Sinner at the first opportunity in game four and then comfortably serving out the opening set.

Such was his dominance that&nbsp;Djokovic&nbsp;silenced a partisan crowd which has been rambunctious for all of Sinner's matches, and he immediately broke serve again at the start of the second set.

He reeled off 14 straight points from the start of the final game of the first set into the third game of the second, which was eventually won by Sinner to just hold his serve.

Sinner looked like he was going to be walked over but he showed huge heart and brought the crowd to its feet when he held his serve in game seven, a 15-minute mini-epic in which&nbsp;Djokovic&nbsp;had two break points, to stay at 4-3.

However in the end he couldn't stay with&nbsp;Djokovic&nbsp;and in the end surrendered the match in disappointing fashion with a double fault.

Earlier, Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury retained their ATP Finals doubles title on Sunday as they cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.

The US Open champions kept hold of their crown with a near-perfect campaign in Turin, going unbeaten in their five matches.

American Ram and Briton Salisbury took their winning streak at the season-ending tournament to 10 matches after also sweeping to last year's title undefeated.

Granollers and Zeballos missed out on the year-end top spot in the world rankings following the straight-sets defeat, with their eliminated Green Group opponents Ivan&nbsp;Dodig and Austin&nbsp;Krajicek remaining in first.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic wins record-breaking seventh ATP Finals title

Novak Djokovic closed in on a record-breaking seventh ATP Finals title on Saturday after sweeping past Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-2 in a dominating semi-final display he hailed as his best of the tournament.

World number one Djokovic will face home favourite Jannik Sinner on Sunday in the final in Turin, as the 36-year-old attempts to cap an age-defying year with yet another major triumph.

"The best match of the tournament for me, without a doubt. It came at right time really, after spending a lot of hours on the court in the first three matches," said Djokovic.

"Tonight, from the very beginning, I felt the ball well. I approached the match with the right attitude, the right mentality."

The Serb came into the Finals at the end of a year which has brought three Grand Slams, taking his total to an all-time best of 24, and a 40th Masters 1000 title.

Now only Sinner stands between Djokovic and victory, which would take him past his old foe and retired great Roger Federer for season-ending tournament titles.

Sunday's final promises to be a tough proposition for Djokovic as he lost to Sinner in the group stage and will have to deal with a partisan Italian crowd that, unusually for him, won't be on his side.

"He's been playing fantastic tennis, arguably the best tennis of his life. On this stage, against top 10 players," added Djokovic.

"We played a very tight match the other night, the atmosphere was electric. I don't expect anything less than what we had in the group stage matchup."

Djokovic now has the better of his five matches with Wimbledon champion Alcaraz, who at 20 is already a two-time Grand Slam winner and was bidding to become the youngest finalist since Pete Sampras won the title back in 1991.

Saturday's match didn't live up to the previous four dramatic clashes however, as Djokovic put on a show of force which put pretender Alcaraz firmly in his place.

"I feel like I am not on his level on indoor courts," a dejected Alcaraz told reporters.

"He has more experience than me playing in these tournaments, in these courts. But he's unbelievable."

<h2>Sinner delivering</h2>

Sinner said he has the recipe for glory after his convincing 6-3, 6-7 (4/7), 6-1 win over Daniil Medvedev made him the first Italian to ever reach the final.

The Italian has risen to fourth in the world rankings in 2023, and backed by passionate home support, the 22-year-old has a chance to cap the best season of his young career with what would be his biggest title to date.

"It's like the first time you cook pasta with tomato sauce, maybe it's not that good. You realise that it needs more salt so the next time you add it. Then you might start using fresh tomatoes, and then add in basil," Sinner told reporters.

"You learn things as you go along, until you get the dish right. That's what I'm doing. But you have to be careful, you can't just keep adding new things, because if you put in too many ingredients the dish won't be good any more. There's always a balance to be struck."

He faces Djokovic after his third straight win over world number three Medvedev, who he also beat in finals in Vienna and Beijing.

Medvedev predicted big things for Sinner after Saturday's defeat, saying that the Italian will win Grand Slams and top the world rankings if he keeps playing as he has in Turin.

"Right now he's, let's call it, riding a wave. You can see it," said Medvedev.&nbsp;

"If he plays like this, like he played in the last weeks, all the time, he's going to have slams, number one... The question is how often is he going to ride it. When he's not on the wave, how good he plays."

Tennis: Novak Djokovic eyes ATP Finals record after last-four demolition of Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alacraz set up an ATP Finals last-four showdown with Novak Djokovic after beating Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-4 on Friday and topping the Red Group.

World number two Alcaraz needed to win to ensure a spot in the last four on his debut appearance at the season-ending tournament.

And he did just that in impressive fashion, cruising to a straight-sets victory which ensured him first place ahead of Medvedev regardless of what happens in Friday night's dead-rubber between Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev.

"It's amazing to be able to play the semi-finals here on my first time. I played some great tennis these last two matches," said Alcaraz.

"Novak is Novak, he is the best player in the world right now, he's just lost six matches this year so that means he is unbelievable. I'm going to bring my best tennis."

Alcaraz also gained a small measure of revenge for defeat in the US Open semi-finals against Medvedev, who finishes second in the group after having already qualified for the semis on Wednesday.

Alcaraz came into the Finals struggling with form and injury but has warmed up as the tournament has progressed and his semi-final with Djokovic on Saturday promises to be a blockbuster.

Djokovic, who has already secured the year-end top spot in the world rankings, is gunning for a record-breaking seventh Finals triumph after qualifying second in the Green Group.

Medvedev, the 2020 Finals champion, will now face home hope Jannik Sinner, who became the first Italian ever to reach the semis on Thursday.

The Russian has faced Sinner in four finals this season, sharing them with two wins each but prevailing in the most important, at the Miami Masters back in April.

I'm going to bring my best tennis." Alcaraz also gained a small measure of revenge for defeat in the US Open semi-finals against Medvedev, who finishes second in the group after having already qualified for the semis on Wednesday.

ATP Finals: Carlos Alcaraz sets up Novak Djokovic tie in last four with win over Daniil Medvedev

Novak Djokovic eventually tamed Danish debutant Holger Rune with a 7-6(4) 6-7(1) 6-3 victory in his opening round robin match at the ATP Finals to seal the year-end number one ranking for a record-extending eighth time on Sunday.

The 36-year-old Serb was stretched to the limit at times with Rune producing some fireworks for the large evening crowd in Turin's cavernous Pala Alpitour.

But after an uncharacteristically poor second-set tiebreak, Djokovic made his experience count as he began his quest for a record seventh title at the year-ender.

Earlier on day one, Jannik Sinner made a dream start in front of his home crowd with a 6-4 6-4 defeat of Stefanos Tsitsipas in their opening Green Group clash.

Djokovic will next face Sinner on Tuesday.

The Serbian's 19th successive win ended any chance of Spain's Carlos Alcaraz overtaking him in the rankings this week.

A sensational first set had the crowd on the edge of their seats with Djokovic edging it on the tiebreak.

But the 20-year-old Rune, who had won in two of their first four meetings, was undeterred and cranked up the power to take the set to another tiebreak which he raced away with.

<h2>EARLY BREAK</h2>

Djokovic broke early in the deciding set but then handed back the advantage with a poor service game, smashing two rackets during the changeover.

Rune wavered again though at 2-3 as he lost his focus and began to rant towards coach Boris Becker.

This time there was no coming back as Djokovic eased home.

"It took everything. The first game he was firing shots and I knew it would be a tough night," Djokovic, who now boasts an 18-1 record in his opening match at the tournament, said.

"He played great and I played great in moments. It was an emotional win knowing that I would clinch the world number one."

World number four Sinner, who has qualified for the ATP Finals first time having played as an alternate last year, delighted the Italian fans with a superb display.

He served superbly throughout and struck his ground strokes with venom, needing just one service break in each set to wrap up a routine victory.

"It was a long week before coming here and I was excited to finally step on court," the 22-year-old Sinner said. "I knew it would be tough, but I think I answered the questions really well.

"It's a special week, such an incredible feeling playing here with the roof closed and the crowd."

ATP Finals: Novak Djokovic beats Holger Rune to go on top of year-end world rankings

Novak Djokovic defeated Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-3 in Sunday's final to win a record-extending seventh Paris Masters title and close in on securing the year-end number one ranking for an eighth time.

The 36-year-old Djokovic eclipsed his previous record set two years ago as the tournament's oldest champion, capturing his 40th Masters 1000 title and stretching his winning run to 18 matches.

Djokovic collected his sixth title of the season to draw level with Carlos Alcaraz, adding to the Masters victory in Cincinnati that set him up for a landmark 24th Grand Slam singles crown at the US Open.

He will take a 1,490-point lead over Alcaraz into the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin later this month. Djokovic won the tournament for the sixth time last year after Alcaraz withdrew because of injury.

Dimitrov, 32, was chasing his first title in Paris since winning the ATP Finals in 2017 but suffered a 10th straight loss to Djokovic in a meeting of the two oldest players in the top 20.

The pair held serve largely untroubled until Djokovic landed the first blow at 3-3 in the opening set, when Dimitrov gave his rival his first glimpse with a forehand that drifted long.

Dimitrov produced a crunching serve that a scrambling Djokovic could only return shallow into the court, but the Bulgarian dumped his backhand into the net to concede the break.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic beats Grigor Dimitrov for seventh Paris Masters title

World number two Carlos Alcaraz said on Wednesday his ‘beautiful battle’ with Novak Djokovic at the top of men's tennis was driving him on as he prepared for the China Open in Beijing. Alcaraz beat top-rated Djokovic in a memorable Wimbledon final in July and could close the gap on the Serb at the top of the rankings with a strong performance in the Chinese capital.

Asked by AFP at a media briefing on Wednesday if his tussle with Djokovic was giving him extra impetus, Alcaraz said: "Yes, of course."

"We have a really beautiful battle for the number one spot after the great performance Djokovic had in the American season," the Spaniard said. "For me, the number one spot is one of the main goals," he said.

Alcaraz is the top seed for the China Open and will likely kick off his campaign with a match against a qualifier on Thursday.

They include Daniil Medvedev -- runner-up in the United States -- who faces American powerhouse Tommy Paul in a tough first-round draw. Medvedev, ranked third in the world, said at a briefing on Wednesday a "competitive" field was pushing him to finish the season strongly.

"Sometimes the end of the season can be tricky because all the Grand Slams are finished, so you need to find this motivation," the Russian said. "The motivation is... to continue proving to yourself that you can win these big tournaments, big titles, against big opponents," he said.

World number four Holger Rune will also take on Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada in the first round.

The China Open is being held for the first time since 2019 and follows men's and women's tournaments in the cities of Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Chengdu.

The women's tour is back in China after its global governing body ended its boycott of the country.

The WTA had suspended its engagements there after Chinese player Peng Shuai made sexual assault allegations against a top government official.

China Open 2023: Carlos Alcaraz relishes 'beautiful battle' for number one spot

Twenty-two-Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal has lauded his arch-rival Novak Djokovic. Djokovic has had a stellar run in 2023, having won the Australian Open, French Open and the US Open. With his triumph at the US Open, he achieved his 24th Grand Slam title to come at par with&nbsp;Margaret Court for the most Majors won in both men’s and women’s tennis. Thus, Nadal feels Djokovic could've been more frustrated without the&nbsp;Grand Slam record as he 'lives more intensely' and that is why he is the best.&nbsp;

Speaking to Moviestar Plus, Nadal -- who has been out of action for quite some time due to injury issues -- said, "I'm not frustrated for a simple reason. I believe that, within my means, I have done everything possible to ensure that things go as smoothly as possible for me. Novak could be frustrated because he lives everything more intensely and that's why he's the best."

<h2>PARIS 2024 TO BE NADAL'S LAST APPEARANCE?</h2>

Talking about Nadal, the former world number one has been away from action for a long time due to injury woes. In May, the Spaniard announced that he would be unable to defend his Roland Garros title and has been away from the court due to a persistent hip injury. In June, the 37-year-old underwent arthroscopic surgery on his injured left hip flexor and it isn't clear when will he return to the court. During the same interaction, Nadal pointed out how he has missed several competitions due to fitness issues and believes the Paris Olympics, to be held next year, will be a nice end to his illustrious career.

In this regard, Nadal opined, "I have been one of the most inactive players on the circuit for many years. I've missed four and a half years of Grand Slams. That's what the sport is all about. Djokovic is also more successful because he has had a level of fitness/physique that has allowed him to play more than me."

“I would like to play again, to be competitive. But I'm not expecting to come back and win Roland Garros or Australia, so that people are not disoriented. The 2024 Olympics in Paris would be a nice end to my career if I feel good. My schedule can change if I feel I have a chance to win at Roland Garros,” Nadal added.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic gets EMOTIONAL as fans welcome him to Serbia after 24th grand slam win - WATCH

Novak Djokovic beat Daniil Medvedev in the 2023 US Open Final on September 11 to win his record-equalling 24th grand slam title. The Serb won the game in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3 for the marquee win. Medvedev wasn't satisfied with the results as expected and asked Djokovic 'when is he planning to slow down' at the trophy ceremony.

The 36-year-old Serb won three of the four grand slams this year except the Wimbledon 2023 which was won by Spain's Carlos Alcaraz. Nonetheless, Medvedev's question seems legit as Djokovic isn't showing signs of slowing down anytime soon.

“First of all, Novak, I want to ask: What are you still doing here? Come on,” Medvedev said.

“I mean, jokes apart, I mean, what is it? Our third final? Maybe not the last, hope so because you probably gonna be in many more.

Novak Djokovic's EMOTIONAL tribute to Kobe Bryant after winning record-equalling 24th grand slam title - WATCH

Novak Djokovic would not let Daniil Medvedev spoil his date with history a second time battling past the Russian 6-3 7-6(5) 6-3 to win the US&nbsp;Open on Sunday and equal Margaret Court's record haul of 24 Grand Slams.

The victory, his fourth in 10 Flushing Meadows finals, capped another remarkable Grand Slam campaign for Djokovic with wins at the Australian, French and US&nbsp;Opens and a return to the top of the world rankings when they are updated on Monday.

The 36-year-old Serb becomes the oldest US&nbsp;Open men’s winner in the Open Era and the first to win three Grand Slam events in a season for the fourth time.

"It obviously means the world to me," said Djokovic about his 24th Slam. "I'm really living my childhood dream.

"To make the history of this sport is something truly remarkable, it's hard to describe the words.

"I had the childhood dream when I was 7, 8, I wanted to become the best player in the world."

And it is a dream that continues to come true. Djokovic has already won more Grand Slams than any man and now shares the overall record with Court.

After clinching his historic title Djokovic threw his racquet in the air and dropped to his knees as the capacity crowd roared.

He would pick himself up and find his young daughter courtside for an emotional hug before going back to the bench where he pulled out a T-shirt with "Mamba Forever" on the front and the number 24 on the back.

The shirt was a tribute to both his achievement and late friend Los Angeles Lakers great Kobe Bryant, who wore the number throughout much of his all-star career before dying in a helicopter crash.

"I thought of doing this T-shirt, eventually, if I get the chance to win the tournament," said Djokovic. "Kobe was a close friend, we chatted a lot about the winner's mentality.

"When I was struggling with injury he was one of the people I relied on the most. He was always there for any kind of counsel, advice.

"I thought 24 is the jersey that he wore when he became a legend of Lakers and world basketball."

While Djokovic and Medvedev are intriguing figures, neither has been fully embraced by the New York crowds.

Until the end there was little of the electricity that crackled through Arthur Ashe during the women's final on Saturday, with no clear support for either player from an attentive but subdued audience.

As the match started Djokovic walked out on to court and stared across the net at Medvedev the man once again standing between him and history just as he had two years ago.

The last time the two clashed at the U.S. Open was in the 2021 final, when the Russian captured his only major and denied the Serb a rare calendar Grand Slam.

While Djokovic did not speak of revenge on the road to the final the Serb is known to hold a grudge and only referenced that loss as a learning experience.

Lesson learned.

As expected in a contest featuring the sport's two premier hardcourt players, almost every point was contested with long rallies as both men pounded away at each other from the baseline.

Djokovic came out playing with purpose and applied pressure right away breaking the third seed at the first opportunity on way to a 3-0 lead.

That would be the only break Djokovic would need against a surprisingly flat Medvedev who could not manufacture a single break chance in the first set.

During a marathon one hour and 44 minute, lung-bursting second set Medvedev would find life forcing a tiring Djokovic into long grinding point, after grinding point.

But the tireless Russian's hard work would pay no dividends unable to convert any of his few break chances including one at 6-5 that would have given him the set.

Medvedev charged in front 3-1 of the tie-break but again could not land the knockout blow as Djokovic came off the ropes to take it 7-5 and a 2-0 lead.

If there is one thing Djokovic possesses it is a killer instinct and the Serb wasted no time striking breaking Medvedev to go up 3-1 in the third.

A defiant Medvedev answered with his first and only break of the match but it was not enough with Djokovic hitting right back with another break then holding serve the rest of way to clinch the title.

Novak Djokovic wins US Open for record equalling 24th Grand Slam

In PICS – Novak Djokovic wins US Open 2023, beats Daniil Medvedev to lift record 24th Grand Slam title

As Novak Djokovic again stands on the verge of history at the US Open, he has a score to settle with Daniil Medvedev after his loss to the Russian in the 2021 final cost him a calendar Grand Slam.&nbsp;

Medvedev defeated Djokovic in straight sets two years ago to prevent the Serbian from becoming the first man to win all four Grand Slams in the same year since Australian great Rod Laver in 1969.

On Sunday the 36-year-old Djokovic goes in search of a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title against Medvedev, who unseated reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz in a gripping semi-final.

Djokovic will return to world number one next week, but he is wary of being swept up by the significance of the occasion in New York.

"Every time in a Grand Slam final it's another shot for history, you know, and I'm aware of it, and of course I'm very proud of it," said Djokovic.

"But again, I don't have much time nor do I allow myself to reflect on these things or think about the history too much in this sense.

"Because when I did that in the past, like, '21 finals here I was maybe overwhelmed with the occasion and the opportunity and I underperformed.

"So I don't want this to happen again."

Djokovic fell agonisingly short of matching Margaret Court's all-time mark for most Grand Slam singles titles when he lost to Alcaraz in five sets in the Wimbledon final in July.

That remains his only defeat at the majors since a quarter-final loss to Rafael Nadal at the 2022 French Open. He is 33-1 at the Slams since then.

Djokovic is the first man in the Open era to play in 10 finals at two different Grand Slams. He has a perfect record at the Australian Open, but New York is the site of some of his biggest disappointments.

<h2>Age is just a number</h2>

He is just 3-6 in US Open finals but could become its oldest men's champion in the modern era, surpassing Australia's Ken Rosewall who was 35 when he won in 1970.&nbsp;

"Physically I have been as fit or as prepared, as strong as, I don't want to say as ever, but, I mean, as good as I have been in years and years," said Djokovic, who swept past 20-year-old Ben Shelton in the last four.

"Age is just a number, that phrase is resonating at the moment with me. And, you know, I don't want to even consider leaving tennis or thinking about an end if I'm still at the top of the game.

"I just don't see a reason for that."

Medvedev avenged his Wimbledon semi-final whipping by Alcaraz to reach his fifth Grand Slam final.

The 27-year-old Russian lost a five-set classic to Rafael Nadal here in 2019. He was also beaten by Djokovic in Melbourne two years later before going down to Nadal at the following Australian Open.

"If I lose on Sunday, the tournament, it's like it's a good tournament but I'm going to be hell of a disappointed. That's how tennis is," said Medvedev.

Djokovic leads the head-to-head 9-5 but Medvedev knows his rival wants to set the record straight after the 2021 final defeat which left him in tears.

"I think the only way I can use it is, as I say, thinking that Novak, when he loses, he's never the same after," said Medvedev.

"So he's different. It's just a different mentality. That's why he has 23 Grand Slams, whatever, Masters 1000s, weeks at number one."&nbsp;

"So I have to use it knowing that he's going to be 10 times better than he was that day. And I have to be, if I want to still beat him, 10 times better than I was that day."

Medvedev has already torn up the script once this tournament with a "12 out of 10" performance against Alcaraz. He may need another off-the-charts display to deny Djokovic one more time.

"Novak is going to be his best version on Sunday, and I have to be the best-ever version of myself if I want to try to beat him."

Tennis: Novak Djokovic chases record-equalling 24th grand slam title in US Open final

Novak Djokovic used his experience to overcome American Ben Shelton as the Serbian battled past his 20-year-old challenger 6-3 6-2 7-6(4) to reach his 10th U.S. Open final on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday.

Shelton had flummoxed opponents in New York with his big serve, but the 36-year-old second seed Djokovic was able to harness his experience to neutralise a third-set surge from the young American.

"Obviously I knew that he's got a lot of firepower. He has an amazing pop on the serve, he's just so dynamic and very unpredictable what comes next," said Djokovic. "I just had to stay there mentally, present, calm, and focus on the game plan."

Already assured of returning to the top of the world rankings when they are updated after the tournament, Djokovic will continue the hunt for his 24th Grand Slam title to match Margaret Court's all-time singles record on Sunday.

Shelton handed Djokovic a break in the sixth game of the first set with a series of unforced errors, and the unseeded American was unable to convert his own break point chance in the ninth.

In the second set, Shelton's best weapon failed him as he helped Djokovic secure a break with a double fault in the fifth game and he dropped his racquet in frustration as he sent a forehand out to hand the Serb another break in the seventh.

Djokovic was competing in his 47th major semi-final while Shelton was appearing in his first. The difference in experience was apparent as the second seed broke Shelton with a fine forehand winner in the opening game of the third set.

But the American came to life late as he fended off a break point with a 143-mph (230-kph) ace in the fifth game to a chorus of cheers from the home crowd.

Playing in only his seventh U.S. Open singles match, Shelton triumphed in a 30-shot rally before converting a break point in the eighth game, humbling Djokovic, who was appearing in his 100th singles match at the hardcourt major.

Djokovic broke again in the 11th game but could not stop the set from going into a tiebreak as he swatted one into the net to allow Shelton to break back in the 12th game.

The Serb forced Shelton into a forehand error on match point and made a not-so-subtle jab at the American's favoured celebration as he mimed answering - and hanging up - the telephone while walking to the net.

"At 36, every Grand Slam final, yeah, I don't know, could be the last one," Djokovic told reporters. "I probably value these occasions and opportunities to win another slam as more than I have maybe 10 years ago, because 10 years ago I felt like, 'Hey, I still have quite a few years ahead of me'. I don't know how many I have ahead of me now."

Shelton said he was taking lessons away from the tournament in what he can achieve.

"I learned a lot about myself these two weeks, knowing how, you know, deep I can go, how deep I can dig," said Shelton. "I kind of found a place where I can operate and still be calm and still be clear-minded but be a fierce competitor."

The match was played under increased security after a bizarre incident on Thursday night, in which a protester glued his feet to the floor of Arthur Ashe Stadium, forcing a nearly one-hour stoppage of a semi-final match between American Coco Gauff and Czech Karolina Muchova.

Novak Djokovic used his experience to overcome American Ben Shelton as the Serbian battled past his 20-year-old challenger 6-3 6-2 7-6(4) to reach his 10th U.S. Open final on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday.

"I just had to stay there mentally, present, calm, and focus on the game plan." Shelton handed Djokovic a break in the sixth game of the first set with a series of unforced errors, and the unseeded American was unable to convert his own break point chance in the ninth. In the second set, Shelton's best weapon failed him as he helped Djokovic secure a break with a double fault in the fifth game and he dropped his racquet in frustration as he sent a forehand out to hand the Serb another break in the seventh. US Open: Novak Djokovic punches final's ticket with straight set win over hometown boy Ben Shelton in semis

Daniil Medvedev upset defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in an enthralling semi-final duel to reach the US Open final on Friday. Russian third seed Medvedev set up a rematch of his 2021 victory over Novak Djokovic after ousting Alcaraz 7-6 (7/3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in a gripping 3hr 19min battle on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

Spanish star Alcaraz had been hoping to become the first man to successfully defend the US Open since Roger Federer in 2008, eyeing a blockbuster final against 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Djokovic on Sunday.

But Medvedev -- who shattered Djokovic's dream of a calendar year Grand Slam two years ago by beating the Serb in straight sets in the final in New York -- once again tore up the script.

The 27-year-old from Moscow had said before Friday's semi-final he would have to deliver an "11 out of 10" performance to beat Alcaraz, who had defeated the Russian comfortably in two previous meetings this season.

Medvedev was to prove as good as his word over the course of a high-quality duel that is surely a contender for match of the tournament.

Medvedev completed victory in the ninth game of a nail-biting fourth set, smashing a desperate return from Alcaraz to convert his fourth match point.

"Amazing, especially beating someone like Carlos," Medvedev said. "Before the match for sure I had a lot of doubts after losing easily to him twice this year.

"I said I needed to play 11 out of 10 - I played 12 out of 10, except for the third set."

Medvedev had grabbed the early initiative by taking the first set on a tie-break after neither player gave up any break point opportunities in the opening frame.

While Alcaraz looked instantly in the groove, mixing his thunderous groundstrokes with several of his signature drop shots, it was Medvedev who prevailed in the tie-break.

Buoyed by that early breakthrough, Medvedev raced away with the second set, breaking Alcaraz in the second game for a 2-0 lead and then clinching another break in the sixth game with a jaw-dropping running backhand winner down the line that fizzed past his opponent.

That left Medvedev 5-1 up and he duly served out comfortably to take a two-set lead.

Alcaraz hit back to claim the third set when Medvedev sent a return into the net, which took it into the fourth set.

The decisive break came in the sixth game, Medvedev taking a 4-2 lead with another glorious backhand return of serve that Alcaraz was unable to deal with.

Both men then held serve to leave Medvedev serving for the match at 5-3.

Alcaraz bravely saved three match points but Medvedev unleashed a corking serve on the fourth match point that the Spaniard could only manage a looping return to.

Medvedev hammered a forehand into the corner and although Alcaraz was able to get it back, Medvedev was waiting at the net to smash an unstoppable winner.

US Open: Daniil Medvedev upsets defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in enthralling semis, to face Novak in final

On Tuesday (September 05), Novak Djokovic emerged on top of Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals of the US Open 2023. The Serbian went past the American with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 and the win marked a significant milestone for the former world number one Djokovic. The win has propelled the 36-year-old to his 47th Grand Slam semi-final, surpassing the record previously held by Swiss maestro Roger Federer.&nbsp;

However, there was a moment in the match when Djokovic lost his cool on a spectator. During a live volley with Fritz, a spectator yelled 'Out!' which disrupted the Serbian's concentration, leading him to concede the point. Thus, this was not well received by Djokovic and the veteran made his displeasure known as he requested the fan to be escorted out of the Arthur Ashe Stadium.&nbsp;

Here's the video of the entire incident from the quarter-final face-off between Djokovic and Fritz:

The spectator surely disrupted Djokovic's flow with a needless shout as not only did the Serbian lose the breakpoint but the entire game. However, he still sailed past Fritz in straight sets to march ahead to the semi-finals, where he will face Ben Shelton on September 09.&nbsp;

Djokovic joked that he asked his friends to have a word with the spectator. "He was actually in the box where some of my friends were. I don’t know who the guy was; but yeah, I was pretty annoyed by him at that point. I was communicating with my friends to have a little chat with him,” Djokovic laughed.

“I’m actually glad the crowd wants to get into it, because it means the match is interesting, that they want to be part of it, that they’re having fun. At the end of the day, they pay to come and watch you play, so we try to put on a show. Sometimes [they] might have an interaction with the player, like this guy. I’m sorry for him, but he was really annoying at that point," he added.
