Novak Djokovic powered into a record 47th Grand Slam semi-final on Tuesday with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 win over American ninth seed Taylor Fritz at the US Open.

Djokovic continues his push for a record-extending men's 24th Grand Slam title in the last four against another home player, either 10th seed Frances Tiafoe or the up-and-coming Ben Shelton.

The 36-year-old Djokovic is through to the semi-finals in New York for the 13th time and is now 12-0 against Americans at the US Open.

"It's a huge opportunity every single time I step out onto the court at this age, at this stage of my life," said Djokovic, who broke the mark he shared with Roger Federer for most major semi-final appearances.&nbsp;

"I don't know how many more opportunities I'll get so I'm trying to enjoy it as much as I can."

"I've played so many times on this court, so many epic matches. I can't wait for another in a few days' time," added the three-time US Open champion.

He made it eight wins in as many matches with Fritz, who had pushed Djokovic to five sets in their previous Grand Slam meeting but barely made a dent in the Serbian star's armoury Tuesday.

Djokovic saved a break point in the first game but swiftly gained control on a sweltering afternoon, with the roof partially closed on Arthur Ashe Stadium to shield the players from the sun.

Fritz had lost just serve just once through four rounds en route to his first US Open quarter-final, but Djokovic broke him three times in succession to pocket the first set with ease.

Fritz, whose mother Kathy May reached the last eight here in 1978, finally held to start the second set, only briefly slowing Djokovic's charge.

Djokovic again broke for a 2-1 cushion and foiled Fritz the following game when the American generated four break points but was unable to penetrate his rival's ironclad defences.

The early break sufficed for Djokovic to surge two sets in front as he hammered an ace on set point.

Fritz had another whiff at 15-40 on Djokovic's serve in the sixth game of the third set, his inability to capitalise growing even costlier when the Serbian broke to edge closer to the finish line.

Fritz hit right back when an agitated Djokovic speared a forehand wide, but a woefully loose next game from the American spelled the end of the road as Djokovic eventually served out for victory.

US Open 2023: Djokovic into record 47th Grand Slam semi-final

Novak Djokovic rolled into his 13th US Open quarter-final on Sunday after Coco Gauff ended Caroline Wozniacki's fairytale Grand Slam comeback to line up a potential blockbuster with defending champion Iga Swiatek.

Three-time US Open winner Djokovic cruised past 105th-ranked Croatian qualifier Borna Gojo 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 to book a showdown with American No.1 Taylor Fritz in the last eight.

After recovering from two sets down in the previous round, Djokovic dictated from the outset against 25-year-old outsider Gojo who had won just one Grand Slam match prior to this week.

Djokovic broke twice in the first set, the 23-time Grand Slam winner shaking off an early wobble in the second and procuring another break in the third to polish off Gojo without the drama of his preceding five-set victory over Laslo Djere.&nbsp;

"I knew that Borna has a big game, I don't think we ever faced each other on tour level to be honest," said Djokovic.

"He's a big shot player, serve and forehand, big weapons, moves pretty well for a big guy. The key to the match was to try and neutralise his serve. Just glad to get through in straight sets."

The 36-year-old Serbian star&nbsp;will on Tuesday look to continue his dominance of Fritz, a player he's beaten in all seven past meetings including a one-sided affair in Cincinnati last month.

"He's been playing some terrific tennis particularly on home soil here in the States," Djokovic said of Fritz.&nbsp;

"Obviously the matches are going to get tougher from here onwards and I'm ready. It's going to be great."

Fritz became the third American man to reach the quarter-finals Sunday after a straight-sets win over Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker.

The ninth seed knocked out world number 128 Stricker 7-6 (7/2), 6-4, 6-4 to match his mother Kathy May's run to the 1978 US Open quarter-finals.

He joins compatriots Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton in the next round. It is the first time the US has had three men's quarter-finalists in New York since 2005.

Tiafoe, seeded 10th, advanced to an all-American quarter-final against 47th-ranked Shelton after defeating Australia's Rinky Hijikata 6-4, 6-1, 6-4.

The 25-year-old Tiafoe reached the semi-finals of the US Open last year where he lost in five sets to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.

Meanwhile Shelton, 20, took down 14th-seeded compatriot Tommy Paul in four sets to reach his second Grand Slam quarter-final of the year.

He avenged his loss to Paul in the last eight of the Australian Open, winning 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to become the youngest American man to reach the US Open quarters since Andy Roddick in 2002.

<h2>Gauff eyes Swiatek showdown</h2>

Home favourite and sixth seed Gauff was taken to three sets for the third time in four rounds this week before edging out former world number one Wozniacki 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

The 19-year-old could meet defending champion Swiatek in the last eight after Gauff picked up her 15th win in 16 matches, a run including titles in Washington and Cincinnati last month.

Gauff sparked into life after dropping the opening two games to pocket the opening set, but Wozniacki -- playing her first Grand Slam in over three years -- wound back the clock to level the match.

Two-time US Open runner-up Wozniacki broke to start the deciding set, triggering a ferocious response from Gauff who swept the final six games to close out a gutsy victory.

"Caroline is back, it's like she's never left," Gauff said of the 33-year-old Wozniacki, appearing in just her third tournament since returning to the sport last month.

"The level she played today was amazing, and she's been an inspiration for me growing up."

Wozniacki, who made her tour debut when Gauff was only one, retired after the 2020 Australian Open to start a family, giving birth to two children.&nbsp;

She was trying to emulate Kim Clijsters, who beat the Dane in the 2009 US Open final on her own return to Grand Slam tennis from maternity leave.

Later on Sunday, Swiatek takes on the dangerous Latvian Jelena Ostapenko in the evening session in a clash of French Open champions past and present.

World number one Swiatek is 0-3 against the unpredictable Ostapenko but this is their first meeting at a Grand Slam.

"With Jelena, it's a little bit like one day she can play a perfect match and just put everything in even though she's really risking, and the other day can be different," said Swiatek.

"You never know what to expect."

Tennis: Coco Gauff ends Wozniacki's dream run, Novak Djokovic enters last eight in US Open

A tenacious Novak Djokovic survived a U.S. Open late night fright battling back from two sets down to tame fellow Serb Laslo Djere 4-6 4-6 6-1 6-1 6-3 on Friday, and move into the fourth round at Flushing Meadows.

On the ropes and reeling Djokovic, as he has done many times before, snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in front a record crowd inside a breathless Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

It marked the 38th time Djokovic has won a five-setter and kept alive the 36-year-old's quest for a fourth U.S. Open crown that would pull him level with Margaret Court's record haul of 24 Grand Slams.

"I hope you enjoyed the show, it was not so enjoyable for me especially in the first two sets," Djokovic told the crowd. "It was one of the toughest matches I have played here in many years."

Djokovic had looked imperious in his opening two matches surrendering only 11 games in blowout wins over Frenchman Alexandre Muller and Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles but his 32nd seeded countryman proved a far tougher test.

The two Serbs had only clashed once before in Belgrade last year but there were signs then that Djere was a danger, with the contest needing three sets and two tie-breaks before Djokovic claimed the win.

Djere signalled to Djokovic he was in for more of the same on Friday when he broke the second-seed to start the match and then held his nerve the rest of set for an unexpected and well-earned 1-0 lead.

Facing one of the greatest players of all-time under the bright lights of tennis's biggest stage, a fearless Djere could not be rattled piling on the pressure with another break to go up 4-3 in the second on the way to a 2-0 lead that left Arthur Ashe Stadium stunned.

Djokovic was not without his opportunities, but did not capitalise on his chances until backed into a corner.

With the crowd still buzzing, Djokovic came out for the third set with an urgency and energy missing in the opening two sets, breaking Djere at the first opportunity and again to go up 4-0 on the way to cutting the deficit to 2-1.

"I did a little pep talk in the mirror," said Djokovic about his bathroom break after the second set. "I kind of laughed at myself because I was agitated and annoyed with the result, I had to kind of force myself to lift myself, to lift the spirits up."

With cracks in Djere's game starting to appear, Djokovic continued to dial up the pressure breaking again to open the fourth set pulling a mighty fist pump from the 36-year-old.

But Djere was not done immediately breaking back, setting the stage for what was a marathon third game that saw Djokovic regain control with yet another break.

Moving in for the kill Djokovic swept the next six games to take the fourth set and a 2-0 lead in the decisive fifth that he would never surrender.

"Once I got the break in the third I thought 'OK, I have a shot, I have a chance," said Djokovic. "I might as well go after it."

"I started to play a bit more aggressive, started to read his games slightly more than I had in the first two sets and it worked well.

"But trust me, it was nerve wracking all the way till the last shot," he added.

Novak Djokovic escapes early US Open exit as he beats compatriot Laslo Djere to enter last 16

Top seed and defending champion Iga Swiatek surged closer towards a US Open showdown with Coco Gauff on Friday while 23-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic targeted a place in the last 16.

Swiatek briefly put sentiment to one side as she demolished 145th-ranked Slovenian qualifier and best friend Kaja Juvan 6-0, 6-1 in just 49 minutes to storm into the fourth round.

"I didn't like the fact that I was kind of winning with my best friend," said world number one Swiatek.&nbsp;"It was like playing against a sister because I've known her for so long. I don't have many friends but she's my best friend so that was the toughest part for sure," she said.&nbsp;

The Pole is bidding to become the first woman to successfully defend her US Open crown since Serena Williams won a hat-trick of titles from 2012-2014.

She could meet 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko next ahead of a potential quarter-final clash with in-form home favourite Gauff.&nbsp;

Sixth seed Gauff plays Belgium's Elise Mertens to kick off the evening session on Arthur Ashe.

Czech 10th seed Karolina Muchova&nbsp;qualified for the last 16 courtesy of a 7-6 (7/0), 6-3 win over Taylor Townsend.

She goes on to play China's Wang Xinyu who battled into the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time by coming from a set down to oust Slovakia's Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The 21-year-old from Shenzhen had never been further than the first round at the US Open before this year.

American 14th seed Tommy Paul advanced with a four-set win over Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, heading into week two of the tournament for the first time as well.

<h2>Djokovic faces fellow Serb&nbsp;</h2>

Djokovic can take another stride towards a record-extending men's 24th Grand Slam crown when he meets Laslo Djere in an-all Serbian match-up in the night session on Arthur Ashe.

"I'm pleased with the way I'm feeling, playing on the court," said Djokovic, who has dropped only 11 games through the first two rounds. "Can always be better, but first two rounds didn't spend too much time on the court and played very solid and hopefully I can keep building," he added.

Djere, the 32nd seed, is trying to reach the fourth round of a major for the first time in a career marked by the trauma of losing both of his parents to cancer by the time he was 23.

"He had a lot of struggles with his family and private issues. You know, had to endure all of that," Djokovic said. "It says a lot about his mental resilience. It's great for Serbian tennis that we have a matchup in the third round. So one Serbian is going to be definitely in the fourth round, which is always great for our tennis," he stated.

American No.1 Taylor Fritz later plays teenage Czech qualifier Jakub Mensik, the world number 206 and youngest man to reach the US Open third round since 1990. Mensik celebrated his 18th birthday on Friday.

Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, who received a walkover in the second round, also faces Romanian veteran Sorana Cirstea under the lights on Louis Armstrong.

<h2>Wozniacki spoils Kvitova’s party</h2>

At the famous Arthur Ash Stadium, things did not go according to plan for No.11 seed Kvitova as she crashed out in the second round. A 7-5, 7-6(5) win saw Dane Wozniacki continue her remarkable run as she won in straight sets. She stretched and broke her Czech opponent at the decisive stage in the first set to pocket it while it needed a tiebreaker win to clinch the second set. She will now face Jennifer Brady of the United States in the third round.

<h2>Djokovic, Swiatek ease in round three</h2>

Three-time champion Novak Djokovic did not have many concerns as he got the better of Bernabe Zapata Miralles of Spain in three sets. The 23-time Grand Slam champion dropped only six games on his way to the third round having won the contest 6-4, 6-1, 6-1. He will now face countryman Laslo Djere in round three.

US Open 2023: Wozniacki stuns Kvitova in straight sets, Djokovic, Swiatek advance; Ruud, Tsitsipas out

Novak Djokovic sailed into the US&nbsp;Open&nbsp;third round on Wednesday in his quest for a 24th Grand Slam triumph as Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff stayed on a quarter-final collision course in New York.

Djokovic climbed through the gears against 76th-ranked Bernabe Zapata Miralles, winning 13 of the last 15 games to ease through 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 in two hours on Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

Next up for the Serbian star is compatriot and 32nd seed Laslo Djere, with Djokovic keeping up his record of always reaching at least the last 32 in New York.

"At 36 years of age, after 20 years of coming to New York, I still have the hunger to play my best tennis on this court," said Djokovic, a three-time US&nbsp;Open&nbsp;champion.

"I have the experience and understanding of what needs to be done in the important moments. Preserving the energy and focusing on the present moment."

Defending champion and world number one Swiatek swept past Australia's Daria Saville 6-3, 6-4.

The Pole is bidding to become the first woman to successfully defend her US&nbsp;Open&nbsp;crown since Serena Williams won a hat-trick of titles from 2012-2014.

"It wasn't easy but I'm happy I tried to play my game and play aggressively with a lot of intensity and I'm just happy to be in the third round," said Swiatek, aiming for her fifth Grand Slam triumph.

Swiatek will now play Slovenia's Kaja Juvan on Friday for a place in the last 16.

Gauff, 19, brushed aside 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva, the youngest player in the draw, 6-3, 6-2 to continue her strong run on hard courts this summer after titles in Washington and Cincinnati.

The sixth seed, viewed as one of the favourites in New York, takes on Belgium's Elise Mertens for a place in the last 16 after getting the better of Andreeva for the second time in three Grand Slams.

"I just learned to be aggressive, because if you give her something she is going to take advantage," said Gauff, who overcame Andreeva in three sets at Roland Garros in June.

"She has a great future in front of her - I think she is going to be back on this stage many more times."

Mertens, the 32nd seed, battled back from the brink by saving two match points in the second-set tie-break to knock off the dangerous Collins, last year's Australian&nbsp;Open&nbsp;runner-up.

The Belgian, who had the support of three-time US&nbsp;Open&nbsp;winner Kim Clijsters in her box, advanced 3-6, 7-6 (9/7), 6-1 and now awaits Gauff.

<h2>Tsitsipas dumped out&nbsp;</h2>

Stefanos Tsitsipas' miserable US&nbsp;Open&nbsp;run continued as he crashed out to 21-year-old Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker in five sets.

Tsitsipas served for the match at 5-3 in the fourth set but the 128th-ranked Stricker rallied to prevail 7-5, 6-7 (2/7), 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 in just over four hours.

"I don't know how. I did it somehow. Actually a bit speechless but it's a great day," said Stricker, who had won just one Grand Slam match before this week.

Greece's Tsitsipas, the seventh seed and a two-time Grand Slam finalist, has never progressed beyond round three in six visits to New York.

Czech 10th seed Karolina Muchova, this year's French&nbsp;Open&nbsp;finalist, sailed past Magdalena Frech in straight sets.

Olympic gold medallist Belinda Bencic ended the run of British qualifier Lily Miyazaki 6-3, 6-3, but Brazilian 19th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia was dumped out by Taylor Townsend 7-6 (7/1), 7-5.

Fifth seed Casper Ruud, runner-up at three of the past six majors including last year's US&nbsp;Open, takes on China's Zhang Zhizhen in his second-round match on Wednesday.

Elena Rybakina, the women's fourth seed, plays Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the night session on Louis Armstrong, while old rivals Petra Kvitova and Caroline Wozniacki also meet under the lights.

Djokovic ramps up US Open bid as Swiatek, Gauff stroll

Novak Djokovic makes a winning return to the US Open. The Serbian began his quest for a 24th Grand Slam singles title with a dominating 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Alexandre Muller. Djokovic will also regain his World No. 1 ranking. Is he still the favourite to win the US Open title?

Djokovic makes winning return to the US Open | WION Sports Xtra

Iga Swiatek launched the defence of her US Open crown with an emphatic opening victory on Monday as Novak Djokovic eyed a return to the top of the men's world rankings on his long-awaited return to the tournament.

Swiatek, bidding to become the first woman to successfully defend the US Open title since Serena Williams won a hat-trick of titles from 2012-2014, needed less than an hour to defeat Sweden's Rebecca Peterson 6-0, 6-1.

The 22-year-old world number one from Poland overwhelmed her opponent with five breaks of serve and 20 winners to complete victory in just 58 minutes on the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"I wanted to start the tournament with everything I was focusing on. I was happy to play a great game, with all the pressure and expectations I was happy on the court," said Swiatek after her win.

Swiatek, targeting her fifth Grand Slam title, will face Daria Saville of Australia in round two.

While Swiatek advanced safely, there was no such luck for Greece's eighth seed Maria Sakkari, who became the highest ranked casualty of early round action, beaten 6-4, 6-4 by Spain's Rebeka Masarova, ranked 71st in the world.

Eighteenth seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus was among the first women to book their place in the second round, swatting aside French wild card entrant Fiona Ferro 6-1, 6-2 in early play on Monday.

Tenth seed Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic also made it safely through, blowing away Australia's Storm Hunter 6-4, 6-0 in 1hr 5mins.

Elsewhere in the women's draw on Monday, US teenager Coco Gauff takes centre-stage with a night game against German qualifier Laura Siegemund, looking for a breakthrough first major win.

The 19-year-old American arrives in New York in blistering form after winning titles in Washington and Cincinnati.&nbsp;

<h2>Djokovic eyes No.1&nbsp;</h2>

In the men's draw meanwhile, all eyes will be on Novak Djokovic as the Serbian star returns to the US Open for the first time since his defeat in the 2021 final.

Djokovic, chasing a record-extending 24th Grand Slam singles title in New York, opens his campaign with a night game on the Arthur Ashe main arena knowing that a victory will propel him back to world number one.

The 36-year-old, whose refusal to get vaccinated against Covid-19 prevented him from playing in the 2022 tournament, faces France's world number 84 Alexandre Muller later Monday.

A victory will guarantee Djokovic returns to the top of tennis's global rankings, regardless of how the rest of the US Open fortnight pans out.

Djokovic needs just 20 points to regain the No.1 ranking after defeating current No.1 and defending US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz in the Cincinnati Open earlier this month.

Alcaraz, who defeated Djokovic in a five-set Wimbledon final classic in July, opens his US Open campaign on Tuesday.

<h2>Dominic Thiem ends miserable sequence of six consecutive first-round exits</h2>

In early action in the men's draw on Monday, 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem ended a miserable sequence of six consecutive first-round exits at Grand Slam tournaments by defeating 25th seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in straight sets.

Thiem, whose career has been blown off course by wrist and knee injuries since his lone Grand Slam win three years ago, won 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

"It took time to get my confidence back in my wrist, now I am back on track," a delighted Thiem said in an on-court interview.&nbsp;

"I feel the game is back in place and a straight set victory today I couldn't be happier," he added.

In other men's matches on Monday, American 10th seed Frances Tiafoe and ninth seed Taylor Fritz open their campaign dreaming of ending the host nation's two-decade long wait for a Grand Slam title.&nbsp;

No American man has won a Grand Slam singles crown since Andy Roddick lifted the 2003 US Open.&nbsp;

Tiafoe takes on compatriot Learner Tien, while Fritz faces Steve Johnson in another all-American match-up.

Swiatek off the mark as Djokovic eyes No.1 and Thiem wins in straight sets at US Open

Novak Djokovic says he is treating every Grand Slam tournament like it's his last as he prepares to make a long-awaited return to the US Open next week. The Serbian star, winner of a record 23 Grand Slam singles titles, is bidding to add a 24th to his collection in New York over the next fortnight, which would put him two clear of Rafael Nadal's 22 Slam titles.

At 36, Djokovic said on Friday he is increasingly aware that opportunities to improve his record may become harder to come by even if he is not contemplating retirement.

"I don't know how many more slams I'll have," Djokovic told a press conference. "I'll still keep going. I don't have an end in my mind at the moment."

"I also understand that things are different when you're 36, so I have to be more appreciative, a bit more, I guess, present, treating every Grand Slam as maybe your last one in terms of commitment and performance."

"I see this every Grand Slam that I play right now as really a golden opportunity to make more history."

Djokovic has not played at the US Open since 2021, when his bid to complete a rare calendar year Grand Slam of all four tennis majors was foiled by Daniil Medvedev in an agonizing defeat in the final.

Djokovic was subsequently barred from entry to the United States over his refusal to get vaccinated -- putting him at odds with US government's Covid-19 travel rules -- meaning he missed last year's US Open.

<h2>- 'Electric atmosphere' -</h2>

Djokovic, who opens his campaign on the Arthur Ashe main arena against France's Alexandre Muller on Monday, says he is relishing his return to what he described as the most "electric" atmosphere in tennis.

"The first feeling that I have is excitement to come back because it is the biggest arena we have in our sport, the biggest stadium, and definitely the most fun, electric, exciting atmosphere out there in tennis, playing night session in Arthur Ashe, no doubt," Djokovic said. &nbsp;"Come back in front of probably the loudest fans in sport, tennis fans in sport."

With Djokovic absent in 2022, Spain's Carlos Alcaraz emerged to claim the US Open crown.

Since then, Djokovic and Alcaraz have developed a fierce rivalry, with the Spaniard winning a five-set classic in the Wimbledon final last month, before Djokovic bounced back with a pulsating win in the Cincinnati Open final last weekend.

Djokovic said last week's defeat of Alcaraz in Cincinnati in a near four-hour epic felt like winning a Grand Slam.

"It was one of the best, most exciting, and most difficult finals I was ever part of in best-of-three, no doubt, throughout my career," Djokovic said. "The amount of exchanges and rallies. It was physically so demanding and gruelling that I felt very exhausted for the next few days.

"Those are kind of the moments in matches that I still push myself on a daily basis for day in and day out, practice, sacrifice, commitment. At 36, still have the drive. I love competition."

While most neutrals will be craving a Djokovic-Alcaraz rematch in the US Open final on September 10, Djokovic insists he is looking no further than Monday's opener.

"I think it's also in a way disrespectful to your next opponent if you're already thinking about your finals matchup," Djokovic said. "Even though I've had tremendous success ... that kind of mindset never really resonated with me.

"But Carlos is No. 1 in the world. He's definitely one of the best players in the world the last couple years.

"Sure, there's always an eye that follows him from my team, from any other team. I know that the same goes for me probably. We follow each other."

I love competition." While most neutrals will be craving a Djokovic-Alcaraz rematch in the US Open final on September 10, Djokovic insists he is looking no further than Monday's opener. We follow each other." WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

I don't know how many more slams I'll have: Veteran Novak Djokovic ahead of US Open return

Novak Djokovic makes a long-awaited return to the US Open next week looking to reclaim the title and world number one ranking from defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. The 36-year-old Serbian superstar was barred from entry to the United States for much of the past two years after his refusal to comply with a Covid-19 vaccination mandate.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles title winner could only watch from afar last year as Spanish star Alcaraz was crowned as the new King of New York with his maiden triumph at a tennis major.

Since that breakthrough victory, Alcaraz and Djokovic have developed the sport's most compelling new rivalry, pushing each other to the limit in an epic five-set Wimbledon final last month that ended with Alcaraz triumphing 1-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

The two men produced another pulsating thriller in the final of the Cincinnati Open last weekend, with Djokovic saving a match point before digging out a 5-7, 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/4) victory in just under four hours.

For Djokovic, Alcaraz's performances are confirmation of his belief that the 20-year-old Spaniard is the real deal, the player best positioned to succeed him as the dominant force in men's tennis.

The Serb said Alcaraz's knack of rising to the occasion in the most demanding of circumstances reminds him of his gruelling battles with Rafael Nadal, who will miss the US Open with a hip injury.

"Each point, the feeling that I have on the court reminds me a little bit when I was facing Nadal when we were at our prime of our careers," Djokovic said. "Each point is a hustle. Each point is a battle. You feel like you're not going to get maybe in total five free points in the entire match. You've got to basically earn every single point, every single shot, regardless of the conditions."

<h2>- Embracing challenge -</h2>

Djokovic said Alcaraz's development this season, particularly his poise under pressure, is even more impressive given his youth.

"It doesn't surprise me anymore," Djokovic said. "It was surprising maybe at the end of last year or beginning of this year, what he was doing, the way he won big matches, big tournaments. So impressive -- coming out in important moments, going for it, brave.

"You just have to put your hats down to a guy like that, that plays so maturely, handles the pressure so well for a 20-year-old.

"We cannot forget how young he is. That's something that is so impressive about him."

If the tournament follows the seedings, Djokovic and Alcaraz will meet for only the fifth time in what would be a blockbuster final in the last Grand Slam of 2023.

They have split the four previous meetings, winning two apiece.

Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in an attritional three-set semi-final on clay in Madrid last year, while Djokovic prevailed in a four-setter at Roland Garros this year.

"All of the matches we played against each other went the distance," Djokovic said. &nbsp;"It just keeps getting better for the fans. For us, I don't know if we are enjoying it so much.

"It's definitely a challenge that we both need to embrace and accept because that's what's required from both of us in order to win big titles."

Alcaraz meanwhile is flattered by Djokovic's comparison of him to Nadal, the 22-time Grand Slam singles champion.

"It's great that he knows that every time he's going to play against me, it reminds him playing against Rafa or against the best ones because that means we are in a good path," Alcaraz said.

Djokovic is almost certain to reclaim his world number one ranking in New York, needing only a victory over first round opponent Alexandre Muller to be assured of regaining top spot regardless of how Alcaraz performs.

Alcaraz's route to a potential final showdown with Djokovic is arguably trickier, with 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev and Italy's Jannik Sinner -- who took Alcaraz to five sets in last year's quarter-finals -- both in his side of the draw.

Alcaraz stands in between Novak Djokovic and 24th Slam title as Serbian returns to US Open after 2-year gap

The US Open 2023 will make use of the Video Review System (VRS) to assist the chair umpire in the upcoming slam. The last Grand Slam of the year, set to kick start on Monday, August 28 will see the use of technology to help the chair umpire in decision making. The technology gained positive feedback during multiple ATP events and will now make its debut in the Grand Slam.

<h2>VRS at US Open</h2>

"The VR official and VR operator will then send the video to a screen on the chair umpire's chair as well as stadium screens when available," the document read as quoted by Reuters.

Over the last few years, Grand Slam tournaments in particular have been using the line-assisting hawk-eye technology to track the ball direction. The technology was used to judge whether the ball had landed in or out of the playing dimension. However, the new technology will now help track the double bounces and foul shots, amongst others.

The system like the hawk-eye technology will make use of multiple camera angles to track the flight of the ball. This will help the chair umpire analyze the situation and come to the right conclusion. In case the technology does not provide clear output, the original decision will be retained.

However, the VRS will be in use on limited courts as not all the outer courts are equipped with technologically advanced facilities. The VRS will operate at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium, Grandstand, Court 17, and Court 5.

The VRS has been used extensively during the men’s tournaments on ATP tours but is yet to stamp its authority on the women’s WTA tour. The WTA has refrained from using the VRS and is likely not to change its stand after the conclusion of the US Open.

He will look to win his 24th Grand Slam title and become the joint most successful singles tennis player along with Margaret Court of Australia. He will face a stern challenge from defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard also defeated him in the final of the Wimbledon back in July.

US Open 2023: Video review system to assist chair umpires, becomes first Grand Slam to implement technology

Novak Djokovic needed five match points and nearly&nbsp;four hours to pull off a gritty victory over Carlos Alcaraz and claim a third ATP Cincinnati Open title on Sunday.

A titanic struggle between the world's top two players saw Djokovic -- who looked out on his feet in the second set -- save a match point before coming through on his own fifth match point for a 5-7, 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/4) triumph.

"It's crazy, I don't know what I can say," said 23-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic, who was&nbsp;seen by the doctors early in the second set for heat illness in a battle that lasted three hours and 44 minutes.

"It's tough to describe. It was the toughest I've ever played in my life.

"From start to finish we both&nbsp;went through highs, lows, incredible points, bad games, heatstroke, comebacks.

"Overall this was the toughest and most exciting match I've ever&nbsp;been a part of.

"It's matches like these that I continue to work for."

It was another epic chapter to the budding rivalry between 20-year-old top-ranked Alcaraz and the 36-year-old Serb star, who avenged his loss to the Spaniard in a five-set Wimbledon final last month.

The two -- who have traded the number one ranking six times this year -- are&nbsp;now level on two wins apiece in their head-to-head rivalry.

"I&nbsp;feel proud of&nbsp;myself, honestly. I don't know why I was&nbsp;crying because I fight until the last ball," Alcaraz said.

"I almost beat one&nbsp;of the greatest of all time in our sport. I left&nbsp;the court really&nbsp;happy with what I did."

The 20-year-old unleashed everything he had at Djokovic and found it wasn't enough.

"It was&nbsp;really, really&nbsp;difficult playing. Novak returns five, six, seven balls on every point," Alcaraz said.

"So fighting and&nbsp;running from one corner to the&nbsp;other one on every point is really tough to deal with for&nbsp;almost the whole match.

"I left everything on court.&nbsp;I'm working very well. But today, it was tough to deal&nbsp;with everything that Novak had."

Djokovic, who earned a record-extending 39th victory at the elite Masters 1000 level, secured the first break of the opening set at love for a 4-2 lead.

Alcaraz broke back and broke again for a 6-5 lead then held to take the set before Djokovic left the court for a seven-minute change of clothes.

Djokovic, clearly affected by the hot, muggy conditions, was visited by the trainer and doctor in the second set.

He was broken to trail 2-1, Alcaraz grabbing a 4-2 edge with a drop shot that Djokovic couldn't touch.

But the 23-time Grand Slam winner broke Alcaraz to pull level 4-4 on the way to a tie-breaker.

Djokovic saved a match point at 5-6 and forced a third set when Alcaraz dumped a shot into the net on Djokovic's second set point.

<h2>Never in doubt</h2>

Djokovic headed off to the locker room for another clothing change while Alcaraz pounded his right hand on his bench in frustration as he sat down.

The Spaniard -- who then needed to have a finger taped up -- was broken in a nine-minute seventh game that featured five break points.

The back-and-forth battle continued, Djokovic unable to convert serving for the match at 5-4 but putting it away two games later after the longest best-of-three set final in ATP Tour history.

A weary Djokovic dropped to the court in relief, then bounced up and ripped his shirt down the middle as he let out a roar of triumph or agony -- or perhaps a bit of both.

"I was never in doubt that I could deliver the match when it mattered the most," he said, adding that the rivalry with Alcaraz "is just getting better and better."

"Carlos is an amazing player, I have tons of respect for him," Djokovic said. "He is so poised at such a young age."

Alcaraz will remain number one in the world and will be the top seed while defending his title at the US Open, which starts on August 28.

Djokovic, who declined to be vaccinated against Covid-19, was playing his first US tournament in two years.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic comes out triumphant in 'toughest match' to beat Carlos Alcaraz in Cincinnati Open

Carlos Alcaraz saved a match point on the way to a three-set victory over Hubert Hurkacz on Saturday as he lined up title clash with Novak Djokovic at the ATP Cincinnati Masters. World number one Alcaraz held on for a 2-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 victory over Hurkacz, rallying to beat the big-serving Pole for the second time in as many weeks.

World number two Djokovic beat Germany's Alexander Zverev 7-6 (7/5), 7-5 to reach the final, which will be a repeat of last month's epic Wimbledon final won by Alcaraz.

Alcaraz has won two of three career meetings with Djokovic, but the Serb was looking forward to their first hard court clash.

"It's the ultimate challenge at the moment for me," Djokovic said, noting he'd beaten Alcaraz on clay at the US Open this year before falling in five sets on grass at Wimbledon.

"Now it's going to be the first encounter on a hard court. It's a very good test prior to the US Open," Djokovic said. "Obviously different conditions.

"It's still facing the top player of the world now who is in form. It's the biggest challenge I could get, so I'm looking forward to it."

Djokovic was trying for a second time to serve out the match against Zverev when he was distracted by a nearby amusement park's fireworks display, but managed to regain his focus and finish it off.

He'd dropped his serve two games earlier, only to come back with a break of his own.

"I played a very poor game, but I bounced back and sealed the deal in the 12th game of the second set," Djokovic said. "I could have done some things better, but I'm pretty happy about winning in straight sets."

Alcaraz's victory, after two hours and 18 minutes over Hurkacz, ensures the 20-year-old will remain atop the world rankings heading into the US Open, which starts a week from Monday. He notched his 53rd match win of the season against five defeats, but it was another hard slog for the Spaniard.

"It's been a really tough tournament for me, all my matches going three sets," Alcaraz said. "But I'm happy to win these kind of matches by staying strong mentally.

"I've grown up a lot with these experiences. It's great to be in the final," he added.

After dropping the first set, Alcaraz was on the brink in the 10th game of the second, but Hurkacz fired wide on a match point and they went to a tiebreaker.

Djokovic applied the pressure early against Monfils in the battle of 36-year-old veterans, denying the number 211 his first last-eight-place here since 2011.

Djokovic will next take on American Taylor Fritz, who advanced after Dusan Lajovic retired with a toe injury trailing 5-0.

Djokovic broke once to claim the first set and quickly ran up a 5-0 lead in the second. He faltered while trying to serve it out, dropping his serve only to complete the contest two games later.

"Gael is one of the most athletic guys on the tour and he showed that in the first set," Djokovic said. "Every ball comes back from him. "I served well and made him play. After the first break I didn't look back and raised my level.

"I had an almost flawless second set," added Djokovic. "Hopefully I can keep it going."

<h2>Alcaraz storms past Tommy Paul</h2>

Things weren't quite so easy for Alcaraz against a player who had stunned him in the quarter-finals at Toronto last week.

Alcaraz had squandered three match points against Paul before the first of a string of rain delays that forced players off and on the court in a logistics ballet that finally ended after more than three hours.

The Spaniard held on to book a quarter-final meeting with Australian Max Purcell, a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Swiss Stan Wawrinka.

After the final rain pause, Alcaraz, up a break in the third, came out and finished off the final few points, advancing with 40 winners and 61 unforced errors.

"I really wanted to win after what happened against him last week," admitted Alcaraz, who reached his fifth Masters 1000 quarter-final this season.

Alcaraz brought out the best of his big game to tame Paul in a contest first interrupted at 4-3 in the deciding set by the weather. The top seed came back from a break down four times in the first two sets, but he couldn't put it away when he had three opportunities in the 12th game of the second set.

After the 15-minute game, Paul dominated the tiebreaker.

Alcaraz was up a break and serving at 4-3 in the third when rain stopped play for just over an hour.

Then came a stop-start scenario that saw the court dried and players warmed up only for rain to start again.

"All of the starting and stopping was not easy," Alcaraz said. "I handled the waiting well."

There was disappointment however, for third-seeded Daniil Medvedev and fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Alexander Zverev beat Medvedev 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in a battle of former champions while Poland's Hubert Hurkacz beat Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4.

<h2>Sinner slump</h2>

Elsewhere Wednesday, Italian eighth seed Jannik Sinner fell back to earth with a 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) opening loss to qualifier Dusan Lajovic, just three days after winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Toronto.

On his 22nd birthday, Sinner lost for the first time this season in an opening round after 13 winning starts.

The 33-year-old Lajovic, ranked 66th in the world was outstanding as he took full advantage of Sinner's fatigue after his efforts in Canada, winning all his 16 points at the net and all five break points he faced.

It was also a disappointing day for fifth seed Casper Ruud, with the Norwegian going down 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to Australian qualifier Max Purcell, ranked 70th in the world.

Daniil Medvedev started his Cincinnati campaign with a &nbsp;comprehensive win.

The number three backed up last week's victory over Lorenzo Musetti with a repeat performance, dispatching the Italian 6-3, 6-2 after also having beaten him six days ago in Toronto.

Last year's runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas tamed the upset hopes of American Ben Shelton, defeating the 20-year-old 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/2).

Alexander Zverev, the 2021 champion, moved into a third-round showdown with Medvedev, putting out Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka 7-5, 6-4.&nbsp;

Toronto semi-finalist Tommy Paul was slotted in as the next opponent for top seed Carlos Alcaraz with a 6-1, 7-6 (7/4) defeat of Frenchman Ugo Humbert.&nbsp;

In the WTA draw, world number one Iga Swiatek raced to a 6-1, 6-0 sweep of American Danielle Collins to reach the third round on the first dry day of the week.&nbsp;

The Pole, who lost a Montreal semi-final to Jessica Pegula, defeated Collins last week and took just 61 minutes to do it again.

Top American Pegula relied on an angry racquet smash to reset her game after losing the opening set to Martina Trevisan of Italy.&nbsp;

The third seed, who won the Montreal title at the weekend, reversed her fortunes for a 6-7 (2/7), 6-2, 6-3 win to reach the third round.&nbsp;

"Sorry to my racquet," she said. "I was not so positive today, but the crowd really helped me out.&nbsp;

"It was a super-quick turnaround for me from Canada. Conditions here are very different and that's always going to be trouble. The ball really flies."&nbsp;

Tenth-seeded Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova advanced past Anastasia Potapova 6-4, 6-2. She will next play American Sloane Stephens.

Venus Williams lost to China's Zheng Qinwin 1-6, 6-2, 6-1.&nbsp;

Tennis: Novak Djokovic makes winning US return in Cincinnati as rival Alejandro Fokina retires

World number two Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the ATP Toronto Masters due to fatigue, Tennis Canada said on Sunday.

The announcement comes a week after the 23-time Grand Slam champion from Serbia fell to Spain's Carlos Alcaraz in the final at Wimbledon.

His withdrawal deprives the US Open tune-up tournament that starts on August 7 of a four-time champion.

"I have always enjoyed my time in Canada, but after speaking with my team, we believe this is the right decision to take," Djokovic said in a statement released by Tennis Canada.

"I would like to thank Karl Hale, the Tournament Director, for understanding this decision. I really hope I can return to Canada and Toronto in the coming years to play in front of great fans there."

Alcaraz denied Djokovic a record-equalling eighth Wimbledon title last week, handing him his first defeat on the All England Club's Centre Court in 10 years.

The Spaniard's victory also ended 36-year-old Djokovic's chance of a calendar Grand Slam after his triumphs at the Australian Open and French Open took his tally of major titles to a men's record 23.

Wimbledon quarter-finalist Christopher Eubanks will now gain automatic entry into the Toronto main draw.

The American defeated fifth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas and 12th-seeded Cameron Norrie en route to the last eight at Wimbledon.

Hale acknowledged that Djokovic, who won the Canadian title in 2007, 2011, 2012 and 2016, would be missed.

"Of course, we're disappointed that Novak won't be playing at the National Bank Open this year," Hale said in a statement. "He's an incredible player and one we know our fans were eager to watch at Sobeys Stadium.

"He will be missed but we still have a long list of sensational players confirmed for this year’s event, including 41 of the top 42 players in the world."

Tennis: Novak Djokovic withdraws from Toronto ATP Masters

Novak Djokovic lost the Wimbledon 2023 final versus Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller on Sunday (July 16). The Serbian was a favourite to lift the title, which would have been his 24th&nbsp;Grand Slam title and eighth Wimbledon trophy.&nbsp;But the Spaniard was the better player in the summit clash, winning 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to lift his second major title and maiden championship at the All England Club on a packed Centre Court.

While Djokovic missed a golden opportunity to extend his Grand Slam tally, he was visibly upset when the going got tough in the marquee finale. Emotions were flying high and Djokovic even lost his cool as he smashed his racquet at the Centre Court net post. Wimbledon has now levied a hefty fine on him for&nbsp;damaging a property with his racquet.&nbsp;

The incident took place during the final set when the game had intensified. He smashed it on the&nbsp;Centre Court net-post, leaving a dent mark. As a result, he was immediately given a code violation warning by the chair umpire. Earlier, he had also been&nbsp;warned for time violation.

A day after the summit clash, second-ranked Djokovic was handed a fine of $8,000 (£6,117). It will be cut from his runner-up cheque which accounts for a whopping £1.175 million ($1.53mn).

Despite being pointed out for his racquet smash act, Djokovic refused to apologise during the post-match press conference.&nbsp;At the presser, the 36-year-old said: "There's not much to talk about that. The second one was frustration. I had break points in the second game. Yeah, just tough, tough couple of points. He played amazingly to break my serve, which was enough to win the fifth. The first one was the time violation, so yeah. Not a great moment again, but you just kind of have to accept it."

The Serbian also reflected on his defeat to 20-year-old Alcaraz. He said, "I've won many close matches here down the years, maybe I should have lost a couple of finals that I won so it's even Stevens," said Djokovic. "It's a tough one to swallow when you are so close. I lost to the better player and I have to congratulate him and move on."

The Spaniard brought his A-game in the big finale after going down 1-6 in the first set ruthlessly.

The second set resumed with both players winning each other's serve and delivering some of the most gorgeous-looking forehand and backhand shots. After an energetic half-n-hour, it all boiled down to the tie-breaker - something Djokovic was a master of.&nbsp;

However, lesser he knew what is about to come.&nbsp;

Alcaraz, who didn't look like dropping his shoulders any time during the match, brought it down to 6-6, only for him to produce a magical effort to outclass Novak and beat him in the tie-breaker - which clearly hasn't been done in Wimbledon 2023.

It was the beginning of something special.

Upbeat Alcaraz tired the veteran, and by the time the fifth game of the third set arrived, the world didn't know how to react as it lasted for 26 minutes and involved 13 deuces.

Much to everyone's surprise, Alcaraz came on top and took the 4-1 lead. It was about time before he made light work of Novak's craft and beat him convincingly 6-1 to take a 2-1 lead in the clash of Titans at the Centre Court.

Just when it looked like Alcaraz was on a winning spree in this match, Djokovic returned at the right time and won the fourth set with relative ease.
The match, just like how it meant to be, reached the fifth and final set.&nbsp;

Alcaraz made the most of his young legs and kept himself in the game by covering each inch of the ground in the final set. Some of his forehand shots were outstanding, and so was his grit and hunger to stand tall against perhaps the greatest ever.

His biggest moment was perhaps serving for the Championship as he held his nerves and won his maiden Wimbledon title.

Wimbledon 2023: Novak Djokovic breaks down while speaking after losing to Carlos Alcaraz in final - WATCH

Carlos Alcaraz will have a day with destiny after he beat Russian Daniil Medvedev in the second semifinal of the Wimbledon Championships on Friday, July 14. The Spaniard had an easy outing in the last-four contest as he got the better of former US Open Champion Medvedev in a one-sided contest by 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. He will now face Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday with the Serbian chasing a record 24th Grand Slam title.

<h2>Alcaraz runs riot</h2>

Coming into the contest both Alcaraz and Medvedev were expected to give a tough fight to each other, however, the contest turned out to be a one-sided affair. The 20-year-old Spaniard broke Medvedev on six occasions in the contest while also playing the backhand with perfection. There were 19 unforced errors by the 2021 US Open champion and only had 59 percent of his first serves in as Alcaraz exploited his opponent’s weakness.

This is Alcaraz’s second Grand Slam final having reached the final of the US Open where he emerged victorious by beating Casper Ruud in the final. He could become the first Spanish player to win Wimbledon since Rafael Nadal in 2010. On the hand, with Medvedev’s exit, there will be no repeat of the 2021 US Open final where Djokovic was beaten in the final.

<h2>Novak awaits in the final</h2>

Novak Djokovic has moved a step closer to his 24th Grand Slam title after he outclassed Italian Jannik Sineer 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 in the semifinal of the Wimbledon Championships 2023 on Friday, July 14. The Serbian was at his fluent best and faced little resistance against the Italian which will now see him face the winner of Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev in Sunday’s final at the Center Court. Djokovic has only dropped two sets on his way to the final and will look to join Margaret Court for most singles Grand Slam titles won.

The defending champion has not lost at the Championships since 2017 and booked his ninth final in London. He has enjoyed a stellar run at the tournament, having last lost at the Center Court in the 2013 final against Andy Murray. Sinner was no closer to Djokovic and his experience in the tournament after he was caught a flight in front of the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

Carlos Alcaraz will have a day with destiny after he beat Russian Daniil Medvedev in the second semifinal of the Wimbledon Championships on Friday, July 14. Wimbledon 2023: Carlos Alcaraz thumps Daniil Medvedev, to face Novak Djokovic in final on Sunday

Novak Djokovic likes nothing better than munching on Wimbledon's Centre Court turf on men's final day and after setting up what he billed as the "ultimate showdown" with Carlos Alcaraz, he now wants to gobble up a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title.

"He's very motivated. He's young. He's hungry. I'm hungry, too, so let's have a feast," joked the Serbian who has bent down to eat a handful of grass from the most famous tennis arena after each one of his seven Wimbledon triumphs.

Djokovic has made no secret of his insatiable appetite to hoard more and more records as he looks to leave every rival, especially those whose names crop up in the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) debate, in his shade.

For the first time in his career, Djokovic stands alone on top of the men's Grand Slam totem pole after he won the French Open last month to secure a 23rd major -- moving ahead of his great rival Rafael Nadal on the all-time winners' list. But that achievement has only fuelled the 36-year-old's burning desire.

Considering he honed his skills in a drained swimming pool converted into a makeshift tennis court while NATO was bombing Belgrade in 1999, it is not difficult to understand why winning the biggest prizes in tennis means so much to him.

"Maybe some people think that it would be a huge relief for me winning Roland Garros, being the only men's tennis player with 23 slams. It's not," Djokovic, who turned up for his news-conference wearing a forest green sweatshirt, baseball cap and watch, said ahead of contesting a record 35th major final. "It's no secret that Grand Slams are the highest priority for me, the highest goals on my priority list. Every time I start the season, I want to peak at these four tournaments.

"I feel that the job is not finished until I lift the trophy."

<h2>Men's record</h2>

Djokovic now stands one win away from equalling Roger Federer's men's record of eight Wimbledon titles and if he hoists the pineapple-topped gilded Challenge Cup on Sunday, he will draw level with Margaret Court's haul of 24 majors - an all-time record the Australian has held for 50 years.

Even at the age of 36, there is no sign that Djokovic's aura of invincibility is fading as the Serbian has won six of the last 10 slams.

Even though Alcaraz recently dethroned him from the top of the world rankings, Djokovic is still considered the man to beat and still has the power to turn opponents into nervous wrecks as the 20-year-old Spaniard discovered during their Roland Garros semi-final.

Alcaraz admitted that the stress and tension of facing Djokovic brought on the debilitating cramps that ruined his chances of winning that showdown just five weeks ago.

No doubt he would have learnt a lot of life lessons from that distressing episode, and the way Alcaraz has been playing at Wimbledon means the Serbian will face a player that John McEnroe describes as being "better than Federer, Djokovic and Nadal were at 20. This guy is amazing".

"If I win, it could be amazing for me -- not only win a Wimbledon title but do it against Novak would be super special," said U.S. Open champion Alcaraz. "I always say if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Novak is one of them. Would be great if I'll do it."

<h2>Novak in ninth Wimbledon final</h2>

The defending champion has not lost at the Championships since 2017 and booked his ninth final in London. He has enjoyed a stellar run at the tournament, having last lost at the Center Court in the 2013 final against Andy Murray. Sinner was no closer to Djokovic and his experience in the tournament after he was caught a flight in front of the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

In the entire match, Sinner was not able to break Djokovic’s serve despite having set points in the third set. Having won the first two sets with relative ease, things were a little different in the third set where Novak once again showcased his quality by winning his sixth tiebreaker of the Wimbledon championships. He is yet to lose a tiebreaker in the tournament and has dropped only two sets on his way to the final.

<h2>Medvedev or Alcaraz in the final</h2>

As things stand, the 36-year-old will play the winner of Alcaraz and Medvedev who will meet in the second semifinal later in the day. Djokovic will have bad memories of Medvedev having lost to him in the 2021 US Open final while he beat Alcaraz in the French Open before he got the better of Casper Ruud last month.

A win in Sunday’s final will also see Djokovic become the joint-most successful player in the history of the game. The Serb will join Margaret Court with 24 singles titles and will surface Serena Williams in the all-time tally. It will be his 35th major final, the most by any player in the history of the game.

Wimbledon 2023: Novak Djokovic moves closer to 24th Grand Slam title, outclasses Jannik Sinner in semis

Carlos Alcaraz takes on Daniil Medvedev on Friday for a place in the Wimbledon final, where history-chasing Novak Djokovic will likely be lying in wait. The Spanish top seed has looked increasingly impressive in his surge to the last four but nobody is betting against Djokovic, who faces eighth-ranked Jannik Sinner.

<h2>Jannik Sinner (ITA x8) v Novak Djokovic (SRB x2)</h2>

Jannik Sinner will not have slept easily after last year's painful Wimbledon quarter-final defeat against Novak Djokovic. The Italian was two sets up and on the brink of a career-defining win before the Serbian gave himself a pep talk during a toilet break.

Whatever he said to himself certainly worked -- he broke early and never looked back, losing just seven games over the last three sets as he romped to victory.

Djokovic is within sight of two seismic records -- equalling Roger Federer's mark of eight men's singles titles at Wimbledon and Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 Grand Slam titles. He is not the top seed but candidly says his astonishing achievements at the All England Club make him top dog.

"Judging with the results I had in my career here, previous four occasions of Wimbledon that I won, and reaching another semi-final, I consider myself favourite," said the 36-year-old.

But underdog Sinner, 21, believes he has absorbed lessons from last year's loss as he plots a monumental upset.

"Last year I played a very good match against him," he said. "I have learned about it. Hopefully I can show this also on the court. I'm going to stick with my game plan in my mind, and hopefully I can execute it in the best possible way."

<h2>Carlos Alcaraz (ESP x1) v Daniil Medvedev (x3)</h2>

Carlos Alcaraz has looked increasingly impressive at Wimbledon -- powering past his friend Holger Rune in the last eight. The Spaniard has rattled off 10 straight wins on grass, including his title-winning run at Queen's, and is seen as the man most likely to dethrone Djokovic.

But before he can even contemplate a first final, he faces a tough task against Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev, who brushed him aside in the second round two years ago.

Alcaraz, who has rocketed up the rankings since then, described Medvedev as a "complete player".

"He's an octopus," he said. "He catches every ball. It is amazing, he's an amazing athlete."

The 20-year-old Alcaraz, who won the US Open in 2022 and beat Medvedev convincingly in the Indian Wells final earlier this year, is talking a good game.

"I think I'm playing great, a lot of confidence right now," he said. "So it's going to be a really good match I think. I going to enjoy."

Despite his high ranking, Medvedev's record at Wimbledon is modest -- his previous best run was reaching the fourth round in 2021.

The 27-year-old, who was unable to play last year due to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players, is wary of the "brutal" power of his young opponent but says he has found his rhythm on grass.

"I managed to find it so far," he said. "So hopefully I can find it for two more matches."

Wimbledon Men's Semifinals Preview - Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev, Novak Djokovic vs Jannik Sinner

Defending champion&nbsp;Novak Djokovic has entered the last eight with an impressive win over Poland's&nbsp;Hubert Hurkacz, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 6-4, on Monday (July 10). With this win, the Serbian continues to march ahead as he chases&nbsp;his 24th Grand Slam title. It is to be noted that the 36-year-old is&nbsp;bidding for a fifth successive Wimbledon title and eighth overall.

The fourth-round match kicked off on Sunday (July 09) at the Centre Court before being suspended for getting too late to continue to play.&nbsp;Thus, the proceedings resumed on Monday with Djokovic leading by two sets, who&nbsp;lost the third one before bouncing back in style in the fourth and final set to book a place in the last eight.&nbsp;

Hurkacz had his moments but could not capitalise and paid the price in the end. The Polish star brought Djokovic on the back foot with a plethora of aces in the first two sets. However, his inability to close the opening two sets led to the Serbian's victory. It is to be noted that Djokovic was not at his usual best but he brought all his experience into play to sail past his opposition.

With this win, Djokovic is now joint second with Jimmy Connors in terms of reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals. Overall, the Serbian has now reached 56 Grand Slam quarter-finals, second&nbsp;only to Switzerland's Roger Federer.&nbsp;

Despite a favourable result, Djokovic was the first to admit that he was not at his best and often challenged by Hurkacz -- courtesy of his aces and points won on service. With a day's rest, the Serb will now gear up to face&nbsp;Russia's seventh seed Andrey Rublev on Tuesday (July 11).

In terms of head-to-head, Djokovic leads Rublev 3-1 with their last meeting coming during the quarter-finals of the 2023 Australian Open. Back then, Djokovic won 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

Overall, the Serbian has now reached 56 Grand Slam quarter-finals, second only to Switzerland's Roger Federer. Despite a favourable result, Djokovic was the first to admit that he was not at his best and often challenged by Hurkacz -- courtesy of his aces and points won on service. With a day's rest, the Serb will now gear up to face Russia's seventh seed Andrey Rublev on Tuesday (July 11). In terms of head-to-head, Djokovic leads Rublev 3-1 with their last meeting coming during the quarter-finals of the 2023 Australian Open. Back then, Djokovic won 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. Tennis: Wimbledon 2023 - Novak Djokovic enters last eight with hard-fought win over Hubert Hurkacz

Novak Djokovic showed again why he remains invincible at Wimbledon, young rival Carlos Alcaraz graced Centre Court for the first time and Andy Murray's hopes ended in Greek tragedy on another marathon day at the grasscourt slam on Friday.

Serbia's Djokovic, chasing records on multiple fronts, left it late to book his place in round four, beating Stan Wawrinka 6-3 6-1 7-6(5) just before Wimbledon's 11pm curfew.

Spain's world number Alcaraz is a round behind because of this week's rain but picked up speed with a 6-4 7-6(2) 6-3 victory against Frenchman Alexandre Muller.

Women's top seed Iga Swiatek continued her serene progress with a third successive straight sets win -- this time against Croatia's Petra Martic 6-2 7-5.

Second seed Aryna Sabalenka suffered a scare though before hitting back to beat Varvara Gracheva of France 2-6 7-5 6-2.

For British fans, at least, day five fell flat with Murray unable to finish off fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The 36-year-old had led two-sets-to-one after Thursday's late night action and there was a wave of Pimms-fuelled optimism that he could finish the job on Saturday.

Tsitsipas had other ideas though and silenced the partisan Centre Court crowd to prevail 7-6(3) 6-7(2) 4-6 7-6(3) 6-4 on the 10th anniversary of Murray's first Wimbledon crown.

<h2>Murray disappointed&nbsp;</h2>

"I'm obviously very disappointed just now," the Scot told reporters as he processed the loss.

"Yeah, obviously you never know how many opportunities you're going to get to play here. The defeats maybe feel a bit tougher. But, to be honest, every year that Wimbledon's not gone how I would like, it's been hard."

Shortly before Murray's ouster, Britain's 12th seed Cameron Norrie was bundled out in the second round by in-form American Christopher Eubanks -- a player who dabbles with commentating and who is making his Wimbledon debut.

And to really rub salt into the wounds, home wildcard Liam Broady, who on Thursday stunned fourth seed Casper Ruud, lost to mercurial Canadian Denis Shapovalov 4-6 6-2 7-5 7-5.

Britain's only singles survivor is Katie Boulter who faces women's champion Elena Rybakina on Saturday.

Broady at least had the honour of being Britain's best-performing male player this year, although he did not take too much comfort from that fact.

"Kind of makes it worse that we've all lost on the same day, as well. Probably would have felt a bit better if we'd staggered what days we lost on, whereas now it's a bit of a Debbie Downer, isn't it?" he told reporters."

Alcaraz mixed power hitting, fearsome returning and delicate drop shots to beat Muller, declaring afterwards that he belonged on the "really beautiful court" and hoped to play Djokovic in the final on Sunday week.

"I feel like I'm ready to play more matches, to play more great matches on that court," U.S. Open champion Alcaraz said after reaching the third round where he will play Chile's Nicolas Jarry on Saturday.

"It would be amazing to play a final here in Wimbledon. Even better if is against Novak obviously."

<h2>Record tiebreak&nbsp;</h2>

A hectic day in the women's draw ended with a shock under the Court One roof as fifth seed Caroline Garcia was outlasted by 32nd seed Marie Bouzkova 7-6(0) 4-6 7-5.

Earlier Lesia Tsurenko win a dramatic match against Ana Bogdan after saving five match points and winning a 38-point tiebreak, the longest in women's singles Grand Slam history.

The Ukrainian and her fellow unseeded opponent from Romania split the opening two sets but an incredible battle unfolded at 6-6 as Tsurenko dug deep to win the breaker 20-8.

Tunisian Ons Jabeur made quick work of Chinese qualifier Bai Zhuoxuan with a 6-1 6-1 win in 45 minutes while twice former champion Petra Kvitova cruised into the third round after the ninth seed beat Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2 6-2.

She was joined by Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk whose Spanish opponent Paula Badosa retired with a back injury. Badosa, the 25-year-old girlfriend of Tsitsipas, also pulled out of the mixed doubles in which she was scheduled to play alongside him.

Last year's quarter-finalist Jannik Sinner of Italy, seeded eighth, recovered from a poor start to beat Frenchman Quentin Halys 3-6 6-2 6-3 6-4, while Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev downed Adrian Mannarino 6-3 6-3 7-6(5).

Wimbledon: Djokovic wins in nick of time, Alcaraz shines, all Brits out from men's singles

Stan Wawrinka rolled back the years as the 38-year-old Swiss proved the old adage that class is permanent and form temporary by knocking out seeded Argentine Tomas Etcheverry on Thursday to reach the third round at Wimbledon. His career may be in its twilight but Wawrinka proved a notch above a man 15 years his junior to claim a 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-2 victory on a sunny Court Three.

It was the first time Wawrinka has reached the third round of a Grand Slam in three years and his reward is a box-office duel with defending champion Novak Djokovic, the man he famously made cry after beating him in the 2015 French Open final.

The 88th-ranked Wawrinka, who has extended his career despite issues with his knees, had lost in the first or second round of his last six Grand Slam tournaments.

"It's a long time that I didn't win too much at Grand Slams," Wawrinka, who once turned the so-called big four into a big five by winning the 2014 Australian Open, the French Open a year later and the 2016 U.S. Open, said on court after an impressive display against the 29th seed. "I've been working hard to get back to a better level and I'm happy with the way I'm coming up."

<h2>Hunting ground</h2>

Wimbledon has never been Wawrinka's happiest hunting ground with only two quarter-finals runs and he has made the third round for the first time since 2015.

Djokovic, bidding for a fifth consecutive Wimbledon title and a joint-record eighth in total, leads their career head-to-head 20-6, but they have never met on grass.

"I'll enjoy it if I don't get killed," Wawrinka said of his impending showdown with the Serb who has lost only twice at Wimbledon since 2013 -- one of which was due to an injury withdrawal.

"I'm happy to have the chance to play against him on grass at least one time. It's a big challenge but hopefully I can come to a higher level and be competitive."

"I'll push to the maximum and see what happens."

For Wawrinka to stand any chance of stopping Djokovic's march to a 24th Grand Slam title, he will need all the tools in his considerable toolbox, especially his signature backhand.

That stroke, the subject of endless internet montages, softened up Djokovic in the 2015 Roland Garros showdown and in the 2016 U.S. Open final when he produced three sets of almost unplayable brilliance.

It was also in fine fettle on Thursday, as was his hammer-like forehand, although it was experience that really paid off as he moved Etcheverry around the court.

Only in the second set did Wawrinka briefly wobble, but after breaking serve at 3-3 in the third he seized the match.

Wimbledon: Stan Wawrinka sets up third round clash with Novak Djokovic following win over Tomas Etcheverry

On Monday (July 03), defending champion Novak Djokovic squared off with Argentina's Pedro Cachin in the first round of Wimbledon 2023. Locking horns with the Argentine in the Centre Court, Djokovic eased past the opposition in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 7-6&nbsp;(7-4) to proceed to the second round. During the clash, Djokovic was at his usual best as he&nbsp;commenced his campaign in style.

While Djokovic dominated proceedings, he was at his cheerful best all throughout the contest. As&nbsp;the match was suspended for a brief period due to a damp court, caused by&nbsp;a rain interruption, the Serbian jokingly requested fans to help dry the damp court. 'Blow, we need your help': Novak Djokovic jokingly requests fans to dry damp Wimbledon court - Watch

Nick Kyrgios withdrew from Wimbledon on Sunday with a wrist injury, stripping the tournament of one its headline acts 12 months after the firebrand Australian finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic.

"I'm really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year," the 28-year-old wrote on Instagram, explaining that he had hurt his wrist as he prepared in vain to play in Mallorca last week.

Kyrgios had been an injury doubt in the build-up to Wimbledon.

However, that was because he was struggling to recover from knee surgery which has restricted him to just one match in 2023.

"I tried my hardest to be ready after my surgery and to be able to step on the Wimbledon courts again. During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during Mallorca," he added.

"As a precaution, I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist.&nbsp;

"I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn't have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon.

"I'll be back, and as always, I appreciate the support from all my fans."

Kyrgios had been due to face wild card David Goffin in the first round at the All England Club on Monday.

His place in the draw will be taken by a lucky loser from qualifying.

Earlier Sunday, Kyrgios, whose lone match in 2023 came in Stuttgart last month, said that his battle to regain full fitness had been "brutal".

<h2>Dreading coming back</h2>

However, he added: "I didn't miss the sport. I was almost dreading coming back a little bit, but it's my job."

He also admitted there remained "question marks" over his ability to play best-of-five sets after such a lengthy absence.

"I feel like to the outside world, people don't understand. Just because it's not contact, it's not that physical.&nbsp;

"I dare someone to go out there and play four hours with Novak and see how you feel afterwards."

At Wimbledon in 2022, the Australian dominated most of the headlines.

His high-octane, flamboyant shot-making was accompanied by signature clashes with rivals and officialdom.

He was fined $10,000 for spitting and $4,000 for shouting obscenities -- one of which sent the British tabloids into meltdown as it was within earshot of eight-year-old Prince George.

Kyrgios also fought out an explosive third round clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas with the Greek even describing him as "evil" and a "bully".

In the final against Djokovic, he demanded a woman be ejected from the crowd for consuming "700 drinks, bro".

"In a way it was good to be home. Obviously heartbreaking as well," said Kyrgios as he reflected on his time out of the sport.

"Last year I felt like everything kind of came together for me. Finals of Wimbledon. Barely lost a match. Had the third best season on tour.&nbsp;

"Obviously my body was just crying out for some sort of rest."

For Kyrgios, being away from the tennis courts didn't mean an absence from the public view.

In May, his car was stolen from his mother at gunpoint outside the family home in Canberra.

Before that incident, Kyrgios pleaded guilty in February to assaulting a former girlfriend.&nbsp;

He avoided a conviction for what the magistrate called a "single act of stupidity".&nbsp;

Kyrgios has also been the headliner in the Netflix series "Break Point" where he spoke candidly about his mental health.

He admitted he had considered suicide and ended up in a psychiatric ward in 2019.

"It took me seven, eight years to be able to just open up about that," he explained on Sunday.

"I feel great now. It's hard because I'm putting so much expectation on myself. Compared to that time, I'm feeling a lot better."

His place in the draw will be taken by a lucky loser from qualifying. Earlier Sunday, Kyrgios, whose lone match in 2023 came in Stuttgart last month, said that his battle to regain full fitness had been "brutal". Dreading coming back However, he added: "I didn't miss the sport. I was almost dreading coming back a little bit, but it's my job." He also admitted there remained "question marks" over his ability to play best-of-five sets after such a lengthy absence. "I feel like to the outside world, people don't understand. Just because it's not contact, it's not that physical. "I dare someone to go out there and play four hours with Novak and see how you feel afterwards." At Wimbledon in 2022, the Australian dominated most of the headlines. "Last year I felt like everything kind of came together for me. Finals of Wimbledon. Barely lost a match. Had the third best season on tour. "Obviously my body was just crying out for some sort of rest." For Kyrgios, being away from the tennis courts didn't mean an absence from the public view. In May, his car was stolen from his mother at gunpoint outside the family home in Canberra. Before that incident, Kyrgios pleaded guilty in February to assaulting a former girlfriend. He avoided a conviction for what the magistrate called a "single act of stupidity". Compared to that time, I'm feeling a lot better." WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Tennis: Nick Kyrgios withdraws from Wimbledon on eve of tournament with wrist injury

Novak Djokovic is not resting on his laurels after claiming the all-time men's record with his 23rd Grand Slam title last month and the Serbian said on Saturday that he is already eyeing number 24 at Wimbledon where he is the defending champion.

Djokovic went past Rafa Nadal's tally of 22 Slams when he won the French Open last month and, though his old Spanish rival will not be challenging for titles this year due to injury, Djokovic has no plans to put his feet up and relax.

The 36-year-old has won the last four Wimbledon crowns and is one shy of tying Roger Federer's men's record of eight titles at the All England Club. He also now sits just one Grand Slam behind Margaret Court who won a record 24.

"I don't feel more relaxed, to be honest. I still feel hungry for success, for more Grand Slams, more achievements in tennis," Djokovic told reporters. "As long as there's that drive, I know that I'm able to compete at the highest level. If that goes down, then I guess I'll have to face probably different circumstances and have a different approach.

"So far there's still the drive. A few days after Roland Garros, I was already thinking about preparation for grass and what needs to be done. The tennis season is such that it doesn't really give you much time to really reflect or enjoy."

Djokovic said that although he was proud of his historic achievement, life as a professional player demands that kind of mentality and intensity as he looks to win as many majors as he can before his body can take no more.

"If you really want to have a chance and have a go at more slam titles, you need to maintain that concentration and devotion," he said. "I want to try to use every Grand Slam opportunity I have at this stage where I'm feeling good in my body, feeling motivated and playing very good tennis, to try to get more."

<h2>'Alcaraz, for his age, is impressive'</h2>

Djokovic comes into Wimbledon as the second seed this year with 20-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz now world number one after his first title on grass at Queen's. However, that does not faze the Serbian.

"I think for someone his age, it's impressive, everything he (Alcaraz) is doing. With his team, of course, he's got Juan Carlos Ferrero, former world number one, in his corner who can guide him and mentor him," Djokovic said. "For me, I don't need to have Carlos or anybody else really to find that extra drive and motivation when I enter Slams because I know that I have to win seven matches to win a title.

"So, whoever I get to face across the net, it doesn't make a difference for me. I need to do what I need to do."

Djokovic will begin his Wimbledon title defence against Argentina's 67th-ranked Pedro Cachin on Monday.
