Over 70 per cent of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions/is-koreas-cold-war-about-to-end-178133">residents in the South Korean capital </a>believe that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/north-and-south-korea-begin-destroying-border-guard-posts-176682">North and South Korea</a> should be unified, a poll conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government showed on Wednesday.

The survey conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government found that 74.2 per cent of the city's residents considered reunification to be a necessary step. The Yonhap news agency reported that this number is consistent with a similar poll conducted last year.

The poll also showed that Seoul residents have a positive outlook concerning relations with Pyongyang. Over a quarter of respondents, or 25.6 per cent, believes that reunification will occur within 20 years, and 39.5 per cent stated that relations between the two countries will improve within the next five years.

However, most Seoul citizens are expecting little change shortly. Almost half — 48.2 per cent — of respondents predict that there will be no change in the state of relations between Seoul and Pyongyang, while approximately 70 per cent of respondents believe that North Korea’s denuclearization is unlikely.

President Donald Trump has brushed off North Korea’s warning of a “Christmas gift”, saying the United States would “deal with it very successfully”, amid concerns that Pyongyang might be preparing a long-range missile test. Trump on December 24 said that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un may be planning to give him “a nice present” such as a “beautiful vase” for Christmas rather than a missile launch when the president was asked how he would react to a long-range test. #NorthKorea #ChristmasGift #DonaldTrump #KimJongUnGift

Earlier this month, North Korea had <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/donald-trump-xi-jinping-give-positive-signals-on-trade-deal-after-phone-call-269443">warned the US</a> of sending a ''Christmas gift'' amid the inability of both the countries to reach a trade deal.

"Maybe it's a nice present," he quipped. "Maybe it's a present where he sends me a beautiful vase as opposed to a missile test."

Kim Jong Un gave the United States until the end of the year to propose new concessions in talks over his country’s nuclear arsenal and to further reduce tensions between the two long-time adversaries.

The ''Christmas gift'' statement was made by North Korea on December 3, after it accused the US counterparts of dragging out denuclearisation talks before the US presidential election.

It was "entirely up to the US what Christmas gift it will select to get", North Korea had said.

North Korea has suspended the testing of long-range missiles and nuclear bombs since 2017. According to many US military commanders, North Korea could test a long-range missile.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/so-unfair-donald-trump-slams-impeachment-delay-in-senate-269522">According to Trump</a>, North Korea's suspension of tests was a testimony to their meaningful relationship.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Japanese Prime Minister <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/japan-prime-minister-shinzo-abe-might-cancel-india-trip-report-268002">Shinzo Abe</a> will meet President Xi Jinping separately before going to the southwestern city of Chengdu for a trilateral meeting with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

Though various economic matters will also be on the agenda - as well as tensions between Seoul and Tokyo - North Korea appears likely to dominate the agenda.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held a meeting of top military officials to discuss boosting the country's military capability, state news agency reported on Sunday.

North Korea has set a year-end deadline for the United States to change what it says is a policy of hostility amid a stalemate in efforts to make progress on their pledge to end the North's nuclear programme and establish lasting peace.

Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump have met three times since June 2018, but there has been no substantive progress in dialogue while the North demanded crushing international sanctions be lifted first.

On Saturday, the state media said the United States would "pay dearly" for taking issue with the North's human rights record and said Washington's "malicious words" would only aggravate tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

US&nbsp;special envoy for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/north-korea-conducts-another-crucial-test-at-satellite-launch-site-report-268259">North Korea</a> Stephen <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-envoy-biegun-to-north-korea-were-here-you-know-how-to-reach-us-268526">Biegun</a> met with two senior Chinese diplomats during his two-day visit to Beijing last week, following similar meeting in South Korea and Japan days earlier, as diplomats make last-ditch attempts to prevent new confrontation.

Beijing, jointly with Russia, proposed last week that the United Nations Security Council <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/russia-china-make-un-proposal-to-ease-sanctions-against-nuclear-armed-north-korea-268814">lift some sanctions</a> in what it calls an attempt to break the current deadlock and seek to build support.

But it's unclear whether Beijing can convince Seoul and Tokyo to break ranks from Washington, which has made its opposition clear and can veto any resolution.

Though South Korea sees China as instrumental in reviving negotiations, it has so far sidestepped questions on whether it supports the new proposal by Beijing and Moscow. Japan, which has historically been a staunch supporter of sanctions against North Korea, has also refrained from commenting on the proposal.

China's Xi to meet Japan, South Korea leaders as North Korea tensions rise

The leaders of China, Japan and South Korea will be holding a trilateral summit in China this week amid feuds over trade, military manoeuvring and historical animosities. Most striking has been a complex dispute between Seoul and Tokyo, while Beijing has recently sought to tone down its disagreements with its two neighbours. "Important issues for decisive improvement of the overall national defence and core matters for the sustained and accelerated development of military capability for self-defence," were also discussed, it added. The report came a day after the nuclear-armed state warned Washington it would "pay dearly" over criticism of its human rights record by a US state department official. A North Korean foreign ministry spokesperson said the comments were akin to "pouring oil over burning fire" amid heightened tensions in a statement carried by KCNA.

US could 'pay dearly' for citing violations of human rights: North Korea

China touted its proposal offering sanctions relief to North Korea as the best option to defuse tensions, calling on Thursday for a compromise in the standoff between Washington and Pyongyang over the latter's nuclear and missiles programmes.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/russia-china-make-un-proposal-to-ease-sanctions-against-nuclear-armed-north-korea-268814">proposal</a>, made jointly with Russia on Monday, calls on the UN&nbsp;Security Council to lift some sanctions on exports and foreign workers to "break the deadlock" in the stalled talks between Pyongyang and Washington.

"This is the best plan in the current situation to resolve the stalemate in the denuclearisation of North Korea and for its peace and stability," Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Luo Zhaohui told reporters, adding that a political solution is still achievable despite a recent rise in tensions.

The comments come as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-led-pressure-fractures-as-china-russia-push-for-north-korea-sanctions-relief-268659">US</a>&nbsp;special envoy for North Korea <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-envoy-biegun-to-north-korea-were-here-you-know-how-to-reach-us-268526">Stephen Biegun</a> is set to arrive in the Chinese capital on Thursday for talks.

The US&nbsp;holds veto power in the 15-member council and remains opposed to any sanctions relief, however, making the China-Russia resolution unlikely to go through.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/donald-trump-considering-north-korea-envoy-as-next-ambassador-to-russia-report-242587">Biegun</a>'s public call to Pyongyang for renewed dialogue during a visit to South Korea earlier this week went unanswered, underscoring the reclusive state's discontent at a lack of concessions for its decision to halt nuclear tests and long-range missile launches.

Pyongyang has conducted a series of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/north-korea-conducts-another-crucial-test-at-satellite-launch-site-report-268259">weapons tests</a> and waged a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/north-korea-warns-united-states-not-to-exploit-close-trump-kim-ties-258322">war of words</a> with US&nbsp;President Donald Trump in recent weeks, stoking fears the two countries could return to a collision course.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Trump met for the first time in Singapore in June 2018 and have met twice more since, but scant progress toward denuclearisation has been made and Kim has given Trump until the end of this year to show flexibility.

North Korea's UN&nbsp;envoy declared this month that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/denuclearisation-off-negotiating-table-with-us-north-koreas-un-envoy-266892">denuclearisation was off the table</a>, and some analysts say Pyongyang could soon conduct a test for a major strategic weapon such as an intercontinental ballistic missile.

"We hope that the concerned parties will practice restraint and meet each other halfway, and work through dialogue to realize positive interactions and quickly find a meeting point to find a resolution," Luo said.

China says North Korean sanctions relief is best plan with US envoy set to arrive

The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday condemned "the long-standing and ongoing systematic, widespread and gross violations of human rights in and by" North Korea in an annual resolution that Pyongyang's UN&nbsp;envoy rejected.

The resolution, sponsored by dozens of countries including the United States, was adopted by the 193-member General Assembly without a vote. Such resolutions are non-binding but can carry political weight.

North Korea's UN&nbsp;Ambassador <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/un-security-council-to-meet-over-north-korea-on-wednesday-at-us-request-267389">Kim Song</a> told the General Assembly that the resolution has "nothing to do with the genuine promotion and protection of human rights, as it is an impure product of political plots by hostile forces that seek to tarnish the dignity and image of the DPRK and overthrow our social system."

North Korea's official name is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

A landmark 2014 UN&nbsp;report on North Korean human rights concluded that North Korean security chiefs - and possibly leader Kim Jong Un himself - should face justice for overseeing a state-controlled system of Nazi-style atrocities.

Then in 2016, the United States <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/north-korea-calls-united-states-biden-a-rabid-dog-nearing-death-262205">angered North Korea</a> by blacklisting Kim for human rights abuses.

Earlier this month at least eight UN&nbsp;Security Council members pushed for a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-envoy-biegun-to-north-korea-were-here-you-know-how-to-reach-us-268526">meeting</a> on human rights abuses in North Korea. Pyongyang responded that it would consider such a move a "serious provocation" to which it would "respond strongly."

Diplomats said a meeting would have prompted China to call a vote to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/china-can-censor-ozil-but-cannot-hide-human-rights-violations-against-uighurs-pompeo-268791">stop it</a>, even though it would not have enough support.

But the United States, which is president of the Security Council for December, decided to convene a meeting that instead focused on concerns that North Korea could resume nuclear or long-range missile testing,&nbsp;suspended since 2017, because <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/denuclearisation-off-negotiating-table-with-us-north-koreas-un-envoy-266892">denuclearization talks </a>between Pyongyang and Washington have stalled.

On Monday, China and Russia proposed the 15-member Council lift a ban on North Korea exporting statues, seafood and textiles, and ease restrictions on infrastructure projects and North Koreans working overseas, according to a draft resolution seen by Reuters.

A US&nbsp;State Department official said on Monday that now was not the time to consider lifting UN&nbsp;sanctions on North Korea.

The United States, Britain and France have insisted that no UN&nbsp;sanctions should be lifted until North Korea takes concrete steps to give up its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Pyongyang has been subject to UN&nbsp;sanctions because of those programs since 2006.

UN condemns North Korea rights abuses, Pyongyang rejects resolution

US&nbsp;special envoy for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, urged Pyongyang on Monday to return offers of talks, dismissing leader Kim Jong Un's year-end deadline while highlighting Washington's willingness to discuss "all issues of interest".

Tension has been rising in recent weeks as Pyongyang has conducted a series of weapons tests and waged a war of words with US&nbsp;President Donald Trump, stoking fears the two countries could return to a collision course they had been on before launching diplomacy last year.

Biegun arrived in Seoul on Sunday amid speculation he might try to salvage negotiations by reaching out to North Korea, which has vowed to take an unspecified "new path" if Washington fails to soften its stance before the end of the year.

"The United States does not have a deadline. We have a goal," Biegun told a joint news conference with his South Korean counterpart Lee Do-hoon - Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs at&nbsp;the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea.

"Let me speak directly to our counterparts in North Korea. It is time for us to do our jobs. Let's get this done. We are here, and you know how to reach us," Biegun said.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/north-korea-comments-hostile-and-unnecessary-us-envoy-stephen-biegun-268473">'HOSTILE, UNNECESSARY'</a>

Kim and Trump met three times since last year to negotiate an end to North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes but there has been scant progress. Working-level talks led by Biegun in October in Stockholm fell apart.

On Sunday, state media said North Korea had successfully conducted another test at a satellite launch site aimed at "restraining and overpowering the US&nbsp;nuclear threat," a second such test in a week.

Seoul officials are concerned the flare-up may signal a repeat of earlier cycles of détente&nbsp;ending in escalations.

Biegun, who also met South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Monday, expressed regret over statements from North Korean officials in recent weeks, describing them as "so hostile and negative and so unnecessary".

"But it does not have to be this way. It is not yet too late," Biegun said.

Analysts said chances are slim for North Korea to accept Biegun's call for dialogue, citing Pyongyang's recent statements Washington had "<a href="Not interested in meaningless talks just so Trump can boast: North Korea">nothing to offer</a>" even if were talks to reopen.

"For North Koreans, Biegun effectively challenged their supreme leader by brushing off the year-end deadline," said Shin Beomchul, a senior fellow at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies in Seoul.

Chun Yung-woo, a former South Korean nuclear envoy, said Biegun's offer appeared to be aimed at undercutting Pyongyang's bid to deal directly with Trump.

Trump's re-election battle and the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions/how-does-the-impeachment-of-a-us-president-work-265766">impeachment </a>inquiry against him may have led Kim to overestimate North Korea's leverage, diplomatic sources have told Reuters.

"North Korea won't likely show up at the negotiating table unless the United States promises to make clear concessions instead of calling for a meeting for meeting's sake," said Kim Dong-yub, a professor at Kyungnam University in Seoul.

Donald Trump: U.S. is keeping a close watch on North Korea | WION Dispatch

The top US representative in talks with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/not-interested-in-meaningless-talks-just-so-trump-can-boast-north-korea-262928">North Korea</a> on Monday slammed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/north-korea-warns-of-retaliation-against-us-south-korea-military-drills-261949">Pyongyang</a>'s demands as hostile and unnecessary as its end-of-year deadline approaches but held open the door for fresh negotiations.

The North has insisted that Washington offer it new concessions by the end of 2019 with the process largely deadlocked since the collapse of a summit in Hanoi in February.

Pyongyang has issued a series of increasingly strident declarations in recent weeks, and US special representative Stephen Biegun told reporters in Seoul: "We have heard them all."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/in-pics%3A-china-provides-top-security-to-north-korean-leader-kim-jong-un-145914">In Pictures: China provides top security to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un</a>

"Regrettably, the tone of these statements towards the United States, the Republic of Korea, Japan and our friends in Europe have been so hostile and negative and so unnecessary," he said.

"The US does not have a deadline, we have a goal."

Tensions between the US and the nuclear-armed North — whose forces and their allies fought each other to a standstill in the 1950-53 Korean War — reached a peak in 2017, with their leaders Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un trading mutual insults and threats of renewed conflict.

A rapid diplomatic detente followed, climaxing with the Singapore summit when the two men signed a vague statement on denuclearisation, but Washington still stations 28,500 troops in South Korea to protect its ally from a new invasion by its neighbour.

Pyongyang has said that if Washington fails to make it an acceptable offer, it will adopt a so far unspecified "new way".

It has carried out a series of static tests at its Sohae rocket facility this month, after several weapons launches in recent weeks, some of them described as ballistic missiles by Japan and others -- which Pyongyang is banned from testing under UN sanctions.

Biegun, who also met Monday with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, said the US was "fully aware of the strong potential for North Korea to conduct a major provocation in the days ahead".

"To say the least, such an action will be most unhelpful in achieving lasting peace on the Korean peninsula," he added.

Directly addressing "our counterparts in North Korea", he went on: "It is time for us to do our jobs. Let's get this done. We are here and you know how to reach us."

'Christmas gift'

The US envoy's tone was "unusually strong", said Shin Beom-chul, an analyst at the Asan Institute of Policy Studies in Seoul, adding that his ruling out Kim's year-end deadline will infuriate Pyongyang.

"The key message was that there will be no more concessions from the US and that it won't be dragged around," Shin told AFP.

Frustrated by the lack of sanctions relief after it declared a moratorium on nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests, North Korea has vowed an ominous "Christmas gift" if Washington does not come up with concessions.

Some analysts have pointed to an ICBM launch, while others suggest a possible space launch — which critics would be likely to interpret as a disguised ICBM test.

In 2017, the North tested missiles that brought the whole of the US mainland into range, and experts say that it has continued its research programmes ever since.

Without mentioning the North's possible Christmas present, Biegun wished "all of the Korean people" happy holidays.

"As always, it is our fervent prayer and hopes that this day will usher in a season of peace. I hope all would agree with that sentiment," he said.

Pyongyang has also threatened to resume referring to Trump as a "dotard" — the derisive insult Kim lobbed at the US leader in 2017 — and warned that if the US uses military force against it, it would take "prompt corresponding actions at any level".

At the recent NATO summit, Trump boasted about Washington's "most powerful military", adding: "Hopefully, we don't have to use it, but if we do, we'll use it. If we have to, we'll do it."

US envoy: North Korea comments 'hostile and unnecessary'

North Korea has conducted another "crucial test" at its Sohae satellite launch site, news agency Reuters reported quoting state media on Saturday, as nuclear negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington remain deadlocked with a deadline approaching.

North Korea has conducted another "crucial test" at its Sohae satellite launch site, news agency Reuters reported quoting state media on Saturday, as nuclear negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington remain deadlocked with a deadline approaching. "Another crucial test was successfully conducted at the Sohae Satellite Launching Ground from 22:41 to 22:48 on December 13," a spokesman for the North's National Academy of Defence Science said in a statement carried by the official KCNA news agency. The "research successes" will be "applied to further bolstering up the reliable strategic nuclear deterrent" of North Korea, the Reuters report added quoting the spokesman. The announcement comes after the United States tested a medium-range ballistic missile over the Pacific Ocean on Thursday. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had agreed to shutter the Sohae site during a summit last year with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Pyongyang as part of trust-building measures. Frustrated by the lack of sanctions relief after three summits with President Donald Trump, North Korea has vowed an ominous "Christmas gift" if the US does not come up with concessions by the end of the year. Earlier this month the North announced it conducted a "very important test" at the same site in Sohae. Pyongyang this week criticised Washington as "foolish" for convening a UN Security Council meeting over growing concern about short-range rockets fired from the isolated state. North Korea conducts another 'crucial test' at satellite launch site : Report

North Korea has said that its recent tests of defence technology are directed towards subduing nuclear threats from the United States, news agency Reuters reported citing North Korea's state news agency KCNA.

Chief of the General Staff Pak Jong Chon warned that "hostile forces," including the United States, should refrain from provoking North Korea if they wanted to see a peaceful year-end, state news agency KCNA said as reported by Reuters.

North Korea's defence tests aimed at subduing US nuclear threats: State media

A day after the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/un-security-council-to-meet-over-north-korea-on-wednesday-at-us-request-267389">United States </a>warned North Korea of consequences of a spectacular weapons test, Pyongyang said it is ready to respond to Washington's any "corresponding measure". &nbsp;

"The United States said about corresponding measure at the meeting, as we have said we have nothing to lose and we are ready to respond to any corresponding measure that the US choooses," North Korea's state news agency KCNA said citing a foreign ministry spokesperson.&nbsp;

Earlier, North Korea vowed for an ominous "Christmas gift" if the US does not come up with concessions by the end of 2019.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, the US ambassador, Kelly Craft, said that North Korea was indicating of carrying out intercontinental ballistic missiles test which is designed to attack the US with nuclear weapons.&nbsp;

"Missile and nuclear testing will not bring the DPRK greater security," Craft said, referring to North Korea by its official name.&nbsp;

"We trust that the DPRK will turn away from further hostility and threats, and instead make a bold decision to engage with us," Craft said.

Craft added that if Pyongyang acted otherwise "we, this Security Council, must all be prepared to act accordingly."

We are ready to respond to any corresponding measure that US chooses: North Korea

The U.N. Security Council will meet on Wednesday, at the request of the United States, over missile launches by North Korea and the possibility of an "escalatory" provocation after Pyongyang conducted what it said was a key test at satellite launch site.

The U.N. Security Council will meet on Wednesday, at the request of the United States, over missile launches by North Korea and the possibility of an "escalatory" provocation after Pyongyang conducted what it said was a key test at satellite launch site. The move comes amid growing tensions and stalled talks between the United States and North Korea that Washington hopes will lead to Pyongyang giving up its nuclear and missile programs. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has given President Donald Trump until the end of the year to offer concessions. Some diplomats and analysts are concerned that North Korea could next year resume nuclear and long-range missile testing that it suspended in 2017. Trump and Kim have met three times during that time, but no progress toward a deal has been made. At least eight countries on the 15-member U.N. Security Council had been pushing for a Tuesday meeting on human rights abuses in North Korea, sparking Pyongyang to warn it would consider such a move a "serious provocation" and that it would "respond strongly." But the United States, which is president of the Security Council for December, decided to convene a meeting on Wednesday that will focus instead on the threat of escalation by North Korea, diplomats said. A US official said earlier on Monday there would be "a comprehensive update on recent developments on the Korean Peninsula, including recent missile launches and the possibility of an escalatory DPRK provocation." North Korea's official name is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The country has been subject to U.N. sanctions since 2006 over its ballistic missiles and nuclear programs. North Korea's U.N. ambassador, Kim Song, said on Saturday that denuclearization was off the negotiating table and lengthy talks with Washington were not needed. Pyongyang then announced it had carried out a "successful test of great significance" at its Sohae satellite launch site. Trump warned on Sunday that Kim risks losing "everything" if he resumes hostility and that North Korea must denuclearize. The U.N. Security Council has met behind closed doors several times over the past couple of months, at the request of European members, over missile launches conducted by North Korea. Following a meeting last week, the European states condemned Pyongyang's "provocative actions." "The DPRK has conducted 13 sets of ballistic missile launches since May and continued to operate its nuclear program," Britain, France, Poland, Belgium and Germany said in a statement, urging Pyongyang to engage in meaningful talks with Washington on denuclearization. U.N. Security Council ambassadors had lunch with Trump in Washington last week. Speaking to reporters on Friday, US Ambassador to the U.N. Kelly Craft said of the council's discussion about North Korea during the lunch with Trump: "What we all agree upon is that we are very concerned about any more ballistic missile launches."

U.N. Security Council to meet over North Korea on Wednesday at US request

North Korea on Monday accused US President Trump of "bluffing" and called him "an old man bereft of patience" as Pyongyang ramps up pressure on Washington over stalled nuclear talks.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/kim-jong-un-has-everything-to-lose-donald-trump-after-north-koreas-significant-test-267034">Trump and North Korean leader</a> Kim Jong Un engaged in mutual insults and threats of devastation in 2017, sending tensions soaring before a diplomatic rapprochement the following year.

Pyongyang has now set Washington an end-of-year deadline to offer it new concessions in deadlocked nuclear negotiations and has said it will adopt an unspecified "new way" if nothing acceptable is forthcoming.

Denuclearisation negotiations have been at a standstill since a summit in Hanoi broke up in February.

Trump has indicated that the option of military action was still on the table while downplaying Pyongyang's actions, saying the North's leader would not want to "interfere" with the upcoming US presidential elections.

"I'd be surprised if North Korea acted hostilely," Trump said Saturday.

But Kim Yong Chol, who served as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/north-korea-conducts-very-significant-test-as-nuclear-talks-with-the-us-remain-deadlocked-266878">North's counterpart to US</a> Secretary of State Mike Pompeo until the collapse of the Hanoi meeting, condemned Trump's "odd words and expression", referring to him as a "heedless and erratic old man".

If Trump is not "astonished" by North Korea's response, "we will be irritated," Kim, now the chairman of the Korea Asia-Pacific Peace Committee, said in a statement carried by the official KCNA news agency.

"This naturally indicates that Trump is an old man bereft of patience," he said, adding: "From those words and expressions we can read how irritated he is now."

The official noted that the North Korean leader had not used "any irritating expression towards the US president as yet", but warned his "understanding" of Trump could change.

"He must understand that his own style bluffing and hypocrisy sound rather abnormal and unrealistic to us," Kim said. "We have nothing more to lose."

Late Monday another North Korean official, Ri Su Yong, vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, warned Trump against using abusive language.

In another statement carried by KCNA, he said the US president should "think twice if he does not want to see bigger catastrophic consequences."&nbsp;

The North has raised tensions in recent months with a series of assertive statements and multiple weapons tests -- including a "very important test" at its key satellite launch site at the weekend -- as its negotiating deadline approaches.&nbsp;

Kim's New Year speech, a key political set-piece in the isolated country, is due on January 1.

'Old man' Trump is 'bluffing': North Korea

US&nbsp;President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/democrats-zoom-in-on-trump-impeachment-charges-this-week-267046">Donald&nbsp;Trump</a>&nbsp;said on Sunday that&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korean leader&nbsp;Kim&nbsp;Jong&nbsp;Un&nbsp;risks&nbsp;losing&nbsp;"everything" if he resumes hostility and his country must denuclearize,&nbsp;after&nbsp;the&nbsp;North&nbsp;said it had carried out a "successful&nbsp;test&nbsp;of great significance."

"Kim&nbsp;Jong&nbsp;Un&nbsp;is too smart and has far too much to lose, everything actually, if he acts in a hostile way. He signed a strong Denuclearization Agreement with me in Singapore,"&nbsp;Trump&nbsp;said on Twitter, referring to his first summit with&nbsp;Kim&nbsp;in Singapore in 2018.

"He does not want to void his special relationship with the President of the&nbsp;United States or interfere with the US&nbsp;Presidential Election in November," he said.

North&nbsp;Korea's state media KCNA reported earlier on Sunday that it had carried out a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/satellite-images-show-north-korea-tried-out-rocket-engine-in-very-important-test-experts-267133">"very important"&nbsp;test</a>&nbsp;at its Sohae satellite launch site, a rocket-testing ground that US&nbsp;officials once said&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;had promised to close.

The reported&nbsp;test&nbsp;comes ahead of a year-end deadline&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;has imposed for the&nbsp;United States to drop its insistence on&nbsp;unilateral denuclearization. Pyongyang has warned it could take a "new path" amid the stalled talks with the&nbsp;United States.

"North&nbsp;Korea,&nbsp;under the leadership of&nbsp;Kim&nbsp;Jong&nbsp;Un, has tremendous economic potential, but it must denuclearize as promised,"&nbsp;Trump&nbsp;said on Twitter.

The KCNA report called it a "successful&nbsp;test&nbsp;of great significance" but did not specify what was&nbsp;tested.

Missile experts said it appeared likely the&nbsp;North&nbsp;Koreans had conducted a static&nbsp;test&nbsp;of a rocket engine, rather than a missile launch.

"If it is indeed a static engine&nbsp;test&nbsp;for a new solid or liquid fuel missile, it is yet another loud signal that the door for diplomacy is quickly slamming, if it isn’t already," said Vipin Narang, a nuclear affairs expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the&nbsp;United States.

"This could be a very credible signal of what might await the world&nbsp;after&nbsp;the New Year."

Tensions have risen ahead of a year-end deadline set by&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea, which has called on the&nbsp;United States to change its policy of insisting on Pyongyang's&nbsp;unilateral denuclearization and demanded relief from punishing sanctions.

On Saturday&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea's ambassador to the&nbsp;United Nations said denuclearization was now off the negotiating table with the&nbsp;United States and lengthy talks with Washington are not needed.

"The results of the recent important&nbsp;test&nbsp;will have an important effect on changing the strategic position of the DPRK once again in the near future," KCNA reported, using the initials of&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of&nbsp;Korea.

Asked in a CBS "Face the Nation" interview if&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;might be preparing to resume nuclear&nbsp;tests, US&nbsp;National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien said that "would be a mistake on the part of&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea."

Pyongyang's last nuclear&nbsp;test, its sixth and most powerful, took place in September 2017.

"It doesn't end well for them if they do.. If&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;takes a different path than the one it's promised... we've got plenty of tools in the toolkit," O'Brien said on Sunday.

Recent days have also seen a return to the highly charged rhetoric that raised fears of war two years ago.

In 2017,&nbsp;Trump&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kim&nbsp;famously engaged in a war of words, with&nbsp;Trump&nbsp;calling&nbsp;Kim&nbsp;"Rocket Man" and&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;calling&nbsp;Trump, now 73, a "dotard."

On Tuesday,&nbsp;Trump&nbsp;once again called&nbsp;Kim&nbsp;"Rocket Man" and said the&nbsp;United States reserved the right to use military force against&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea. Pyongyang, in response, said any repeat of such language would represent "the relapse of the dotage of a dotard."

The&nbsp;test&nbsp;is the latest&nbsp;in a string of statements and actions from&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;designed to&nbsp;underscore the seriousness of its year-end deadline.

North&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;has announced it would convene a rare gathering of top ruling-party officials later this month, and on Wednesday state media showed photos of&nbsp;Kim&nbsp;taking a second symbolic horse ride on the country's sacred Mt. Paektu.

Such meetings and propaganda blitzes often come ahead of&nbsp;major&nbsp;announcements from&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korean authorities.

While&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;has not specified what its "new path" could be, observers have suggested the launch of a space satellite is a possibility, allowing Pyongyang to demonstrate and&nbsp;test&nbsp;its rocket capabilities without resorting to overt military provocation such as an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch.

Kim&nbsp;Dong-yub, a former South&nbsp;Korean Navy officer who teaches at Kyungnam&nbsp;University in Seoul, said&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;may have&nbsp;tested a solid fuel rocket engine, which could allow&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;to field ICBMs that are easier to hide and faster to deploy.

"North&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;has already entered the ‘new path’ that they talked about," he said.

Trump&nbsp;told reporters in June 2018&nbsp;after&nbsp;his first summit with&nbsp;Kim&nbsp;that&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;had pledged to dismantle one of its missile installations, which US&nbsp;officials later identified as Sohae.

Shortly&nbsp;after&nbsp;that summit, analysts said satellite imagery showed some key facilities at Sohae being dismantled.

However, in the wake of the second summit between&nbsp;Trump&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kim&nbsp;earlier this year, which ended with no agreement, new imagery indicated the&nbsp;North&nbsp;Koreans were rebuilding the site.

"Remember this is at the site that was supposedly dismantled as a 'denuclearization step,'" Narang said. "So this is a first step at 'renuclearizing.' Reversible steps are being...reversed."

Kim Jong Un risks losing 'everything' after North Korea claims major test: Trump

Satellite imagery captured before and after North Korea conducted what it called a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/kim-jong-un-has-everything-to-lose-donald-trump-after-north-koreas-significant-test-267034">"very important" test</a> at its missile launch site suggested it had tested a rocket engine, experts said on Monday.

It was the latest of a series of weapons tests and statements from Pyongyang, as its year-end deadline for Washington to soften its stance in denuclearisation talks draws near.

State news agency KCNA said on Sunday the North had carried out the test at its Sohae satellite launching station, a rocket-testing ground that US and South Korean officials once said Pyongyang had promised to shut down.

KCNA said the test results would help the North's strategic position, without elaborating on what was tried out, but the site has previously been used to send rockets and satellites into space.

Commercial satellite images taken on Saturday by Planet Labs showed vehicles and equipment likely to be used in a rocket engine experiment, while those captured on Sunday morning had signs of a conducted test, analyst Jeffrey Lewis said.

"Vehicles and objects appear on December 7 to conduct the test," said Lewis, the director of the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in California.

"They are mostly gone on December 8, but the ground appears to have been disturbed by the exhaust from the test."

Asked on Monday if it had been an engine test, a spokeswoman of Seoul's defence ministry declined to confirm the suggestion, saying site monitoring and detailed analysis were underway with US intelligence authorities.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has warned he may take a "new path" if the United States fails to address his demands.

He did not say what the path would be, but observers have said it might include the launch of a space satellite, which would help North Korea demonstrate progress in its rocket capabilities without returning to overt military provocations, such as firing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

Some South Korean experts said North Korea may have tested a solid-fuel rocket engine, which could allow it to field ICBMs that are easier to hide and faster to deploy.

"They may well have tried to see the thrust and duration of a solid-propellant rocket engine for ICBMs," a diplomatic source in Seoul told Reuters.

"That's effectively what they can do on the ground at this point without firing anything into the air."

Kim Dong-yub, a former South Korean Navy officer who teaches at Kyungnam University in Seoul, also said North Korea could have tested a solid-fuel engine as it has been striving to shift from liquid fuel.

North Korea appears to have used Soviet-era liquid propellants in all its ICBM or satellite launches in recent years while developing solid-fuel missiles to be fired from a submarine, officials and analysts say.

In March 2016, state media said Kim oversaw a "successful" test of a high-power solid-fuel rocket engine "designed and manufactured in the Korean style".

Kim also said the North's rocket industry had "firmly transitioned" to solid fuel from liquid propellants, while inspecting a newly developed missile based on a submarine-launched ballistic missile in February 2017.

"It could be solid fuel or they might have developed a new engine," said Jeong Han-beom, director of the Graduate School of National Security at Korea National Defense University.

"In any case, it's meant to improve their capabilities for ICBMs, which need to be tested several times, while sending a message to Washington that we might go back to those old days of military confrontation if negotiations fail."

Satellite images show North Korea tried out rocket engine in 'very important' test: Report

President Donald Trump on Sunday warned that North Korea's Kim Jong Un had "everything" to lose through hostility towards the United States. Trump's comment came after Pyongyang said it had carried out a major new weapons test.

"Kim Jong Un is too smart and has far too much to lose, everything actually, if he acts in a hostile way," Trump tweeted in response to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/north-korea-conducts-very-significant-test-as-nuclear-talks-with-the-us-remain-deadlocked-266878">unspecified test </a>at the Sohae space launch center.

The announcement of Saturday's test&nbsp;came just hours after Trump said he would be "surprised" by any hostile action from the North, emphasizing his "very good relationship" with Kim.

Trump and Kim engaged in months of mutual insults and threats of devastation in 2017, sending tensions soaring before a diplomatic rapprochement the following year.

The pair have met three times since June 2018 but with little progress towards <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/denuclearisation-off-negotiating-table-with-us-north-koreas-un-envoy-266892">denuclearisation</a>. Pyongyang has set Washington a December&nbsp;31 deadline to make new concessions to kickstart stalled talks.

"North Korea, under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, has tremendous economic potential, but it must denuclearise as promised," Trump tweeted. "NATO, China, Russia, Japan, and the entire world is unified on this issue!"

Writing that Kim had "signed a strong Denuclearisation Agreement" at their June 2018 summit in Singapore," Trump warned: "He does not want to void his special relationship with the President of the United States or interfere with the US&nbsp;Presidential Election in November."

A spokesman for North Korea's Academy of the National Defense Science said Saturday's "very important test" would have an "important effect" on changing the "strategic position" of North Korea, in a statement carried by the official KCNA news agency.

The statement did not provide further details on the test.

A senior US administration official earlier said Washington had seen reports of a test and was "coordinating closely with allies and partners."

Trump indicated that military action was still possible when he was asked about Pyongyang on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Britain this week.

North Korea fired back that if the United States used military force it would take "prompt corresponding actions at any level."

UN diplomats fear that North Korea will resume long-range nuclear or ballistic tests if no progress is made soon in talks with the United States.

Sohae, on North Korea's northwest coast, is ostensibly a facility designed for putting satellites into orbit.

But Pyongyang has carried out several rocket launches there that were condemned by the US and others as disguised long-range ballistic missile tests.

Following the Singapore summit, Trump said Kim had agreed to destroy "a major missile engine testing site" without naming the facility.

Kim then agreed to shutter the Sohae site during a summit last year with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Pyongyang as part of trust-building measures.

Kim Jong Un has everything to 'lose': Donald Trump after North Korea's 'significant' test

North Korea's ambassador to the United Nations said on Saturday that denuclearisation is off the negotiating table with the United States and lengthy talks with Washington are not needed.

Ambassador Kim Song's comment appeared to go further than North Korea's earlier warning that discussions related to its nuclear weapons program, the central focus of US engagement with North Korea in the past two years, might have to be taken off the table given Washington's refusal to offer concessions.

Kim said in a statement that the "sustained and substantial dialogue" sought by the United States was a "time-saving trick" to suit its domestic political agenda, a reference to US President Donald Trump's 2020 reelection bid.

"We do not need to have lengthy talks with the US now and denuclearisation is already gone out of the negotiating table," he said in the statement made available to Reuters.

The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tensions have risen ahead of a year-end deadline set by North Korea, which has called on the United States to change its policy of demanding Pyongyang's unilateral denuclearisation and demanded relief from punishing sanctions.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has warned he could take an unspecified "new path" next year, raising fears this could mean a return to the nuclear bomb and long-range missile testing suspended since 2017.

On Tuesday, North Korea's Foreign Ministry repeated a call for Washington to change its "hostile policies" and said it was up to Washington to decide what "Christmas gift" came at the end of the year.

Kim Song also hit out at a statement this week from EU members of the UN Security Council criticising recent short-range launches by North Korea, calling it a "serious provocation" against Pyongyang and saying they were playing the role of "pet dog" of the United States.

Trump and Kim Jong Un have met three times since June 2018, but talks have made little progress and recent days have seen a return to the highly charged rhetoric that raised fears of war two years ago.

In 2017, the two leaders famously engaged in a war of words, with Trump calling Kim Jong Un "Rocket Man" and North Korea slamming the US president, now 73, as a "dotard".

On Tuesday, Trump once again called Kim "Rocket Man" and said the United States reserved the right to use military force against North Korea. Pyongyang said any repeat of such language would represent "the relapse of the dotage of a dotard."

In spite of Trump's reprise of the Rocket Man meme, he still expressed hope that Kim Jong Un would denuclearise. On Friday the US ambassador to the United Nations said the United States had not yet decided whether to have a UN Security Council meeting to discuss North Korean human rights abuses that has angered Pyongyang.

On Friday, South Korea said Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in held a half-hour phone discussion on ways to maintain diplomacy with North Korea.

It said the two leaders agreed that the situation has become "severe" and that "dialogue momentum should be maintained to achieve prompt results from denuclearisation negotiations."

North Korea rules out Denuclearisation Talks

North Korea has conducted a "very important test" at its Sohae satellite launch site, state media reported Sunday, as nuclear <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/talks-with-us-on-denuclearisation-off-the-negotiating-table-north-korean-envoy-266872">negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington</a> remain deadlocked.

"A very important test was carried out at the Sohae Satellite Launch Site on December 7th, 2019," a spokesman for the North's National Academy of Science said.

The result of the latest test will have an "important effect" on changing the "strategic status" of North Korea, the spokesman said in a statement carried by the KCNA news agency.

The statement did not provide further details on the test.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had agreed to shutter the Sohae site during a summit last year with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Pyongyang as part of trust-building measures.

Kim has also held three meetings with US President Donald Trump since June 2018 but little progress has been made in efforts towards denuclearisation.

The latest test comes as Pyongyang is ramping up pressure ahead of its end-of-year deadline for the US to propose a new offer to kickstart stalled nuclear talks.

On Thursday, the North's vice foreign minister warned of returning to a war of words with the US, threatening to resume referring to Trump as a "dotard" -- Pyongyang's nickname for the US leader at the height of tensions in 2017.

The comments came a day after it warned that if the US used military force against the North it would take "prompt corresponding actions at any level".

At the recent NATO summit, Trump boasted about Washington's "most powerful military", adding: "Hopefully, we don't have to use it, but if we do, we'll use it. If we have to, we'll do it."

North Korea conducts 'very significant' test, as nuclear talks with the US remain deadlocked.....

Hwang Won was on a domestic Korean Air flight from Gangneung to Seoul's Gimpo airport on December 11, 1969, only for the aircraft to be hijacked by a North Korean spy 10 minutes after takeoff and made to land in Pyongyang.

Two months later, 39 passengers were repatriated, but the North never returned 11 people including Hwang -- whose son, who was two at the time of the hijacking, has continued to fight for his release.

Returning passengers said Hwang Won had been dragged away after resisting indoctrination efforts and questioning North Korea's ideology.

Hwang In-cheol, now in his 50s, was joined Sunday by dozens of supporters at Imjingak, just south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) dividing the two Koreas, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the hijacking next Wednesday.

"World leaders won't do anything about this until enough of us speak up," Hwang said in a petition calling for the release of his father.

"North Korea is the worst country in the world, and will remain so until humanity forces it to change," he said.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has engaged in a flurry of diplomacy since last year, including summits with US President Donald Trump and the South's President Moon Jae-in, but activists say the issue of human rights has largely been off the table.

With temperatures dipping below zero in the bitter weather, activists waved posters reading, "We stand with Hwang In-cheol", and flew paper airplanes with messages to his father that said: "See you this Christmas!"

Hwang wrote on a ribbon "North Korea, send my father home" and tied it on a wall of other ribbons on a barbed wire fence.

For Hwang In-cheol's supporters, his case is a reminder of the luxuries in life that are often taken for granted.

"I can call my dad at any time, I can see my family, I can go home, I know where my family is," said Jennifer Bowman, a member of TNKR, a nonprofit group helping North Korean refugees.

"That really made me realise this is an issue that applies to everyone."
