In what comes as a shocking revelation, a human rights report states that North Korea has publicly executed at least 7 of its citizens for watching and distributing K-pop videos from South Korea. A report by The New York Times claims that the Transitional Justice Working Group had found these executions in the past decade under North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The group interviewed a total of 683 North Korean defectors since 2015. This was done to identify places where these people were killed and buried in what can be termed as state-sanctioned public executions. Out of these 7 people, six of these executions took place in Hyesan between 2012 and 2014.

The group further found that at least 23 executions have taken place under Kim. However, the number could be even higher as it is very difficult to determine the actual figure.

The report further revealed that the families were forced to watch the deaths of their loved ones during these executions.

Since taking power in 2011, the dictator has been surrounded by political and diplomatic intrigue. He has, on several occasions, attacked South Korean entertainment as he thinks that it would, corrupt North Koreans’ minds. The dictator had said that the influence of K-pop on society would make the country “crumble like a damp wall.”

This is not the only time that such instances of executions have come forward. In a 2016 investigation, a think tank run by South Korea's spy agency claimed that during Kim's first five years in power, he executed around 340 people.

This included the assassination of his powerful uncle, Jang Song Thaek, in 2013 and the purge of military head Ri Yong Ho in 2012, both of whom assisted Kim in gaining power.

Under Kim Jong Un's rule, at least 7 North Koreans executed for watching K-pop videos

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is celebrating his tenth year in office this week.He is now one of the world's most experienced leaders.

Kim Jong Un is one of the few world leaders who is both highly observed and shrouded in mystery.

Since taking power in 2011, the dictator has been surrounded by political and diplomatic intrigue.

Kim has presented several faces to an insatiably curious world since becoming supreme power a decade ago, but while the image evolves, perhaps the most illuminating way to examine Kim is through his constant pursuit of a nuclear weapons programme aimed against America and its allies.

Unlike most of his contemporaries, Kim has no qualms about elections or term limits, and with his age on his side (he is just in his late 30s), he may expect to stay in government for decades if his health holds up.

Let's take a look at his career's tendencies and most talked-about behaviours:

Obsession with nuclear weapons

According to some estimates, Kim now has a nuclear arsenal of up to 60 nuclear weapons, with the ability to add up to 18 more per year. This has allowed him to consolidate domestic unity and gain some of the worldwide status he's long desired.

Pyongyang has also perplexed Washington and its allies by constructing what Pyongyang thinks is a real deterrent to US hostility.

Observers argue that despite the fact that U.N. sanctions over the weapons build-up and pandemic-related challenges are putting Kim's leadership to the test, the weapons are no closer to being taken away by outside negotiators than they were when Kim's father, Kim Jong Il, died on Dec. 17, 2011.

Kim has staged an unusually large number of weapons tests. And four of North Korea’s six nuclear test explosions and all of its three intercontinental ballistic missile tests have happened during Kim’s rule.

Executions and purges in the public eye

Instead, Kim engineered a series of high-profile executions and purges, removing prospective challengers and restoring the kind of absolute control held by his father, Kim Jong Il, and grandfather, Kim Il Sung, the state's founder.

Diplomatic Failure on a Global Scale

When Kim failed to persuade Trump to lift strong UN sanctions imposed after his series of nuclear tests in 2016-17, international diplomacy collapsed in 2019.

Since then, Kim has threatened to expand his nuclear arsenal and deploy high-tech weapons against the US and its allies.

A second Trump-Kim meeting in Hanoi failed due to disagreements about sanctions relief and what Pyongyang would be ready to give up in exchange.

Trump flew out of Hanoi fast, and Kim returned home empty-handed after a 60-hour train ride.

A follow-up summit in the Demilitarized Zone, which separates the Korean peninsula from the rest of the world, failed to break the impasse.

Failure of the economy

Even before the sanctions, North Korea's state-run economy had been mismanaged for decades, and its people had been suffering from chronic food shortages.

In terms of economics, North Korea is at the bottom of the international food chain.

Many foreigners questioned whether North Korea could survive with an unproven, little-known 27-year-old in leadership in late 2011.

Because of his infancy and childhood education in Switzerland, many believed that Kim would push for economic reforms and possibly denuclearization.

Some speculated that Kim was merely a figurehead, reliant on senior officials appointed by his father, and that North Korea would experience political unrest.

In the first several years, Kim also left aside his father's characteristic "military-first" strategy, restoring the ruling Workers' Party's customary control over the army, and engineering minor but steady economic growth.

North Korea is already dealing with food shortages, flooding, and a faltering economy. The most pressing question is how Kim Jong Un will keep the country running despite these flaws.

Diplomatic Failure on a Global Scale When Kim failed to persuade Trump to lift strong UN sanctions imposed after his series of nuclear tests in 2016-17, international diplomacy collapsed in 2019. Also read | Kim Jong-un's bizarre food strategy: Orders North Koreans to eat 'delicious' black swans Failure of the economy Even before the sanctions, North Korea's state-run economy had been mismanaged for decades, and its people had been suffering from chronic food shortages. Kim Jong Un's 10 years in power: A look back at his reign in North Korea

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has said that his country, along with the US, China and North Korea, has agreed to declare 'in principle' formal end to Korean war. North and South Korea, at least on paper are still at war with each other. The actual war that resulted in division of the Korean peninsula was fought between 1950-53.

Moon Jae-in was speaking at press conference alongside Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison in Canberra. Moon Jae-in is on tour of Australia.

The South Korean President conceded that talks to end the Korean war were not moving ahead as they should due to North Korea's objections over present day 'hostility' from the US.

“And because of that, we are not able to sit down for a negotiation on the declarations between South and North Korea, and those between North Korea and United States,” he said as quoted by The Guardian.

“And we hope that talks will be initiated. We are making efforts towards that.”

The Korean war fought almost seven decades ago did not end in peace treaty but an armistice. This makes the war technically still on.

Calling the armistice 'unstable', Moon Jae-in said that a formal end to the Korean war would be a step towards achieving peace on the peninsula. It would also be a breakthrough for negotiations over North Korean nuclear program.

Just hours after Moon Jae-in's statements, South Korea's unification minister, Lee In-young said that a formal end to Korean war would be a “turning point for a new phase for peace”.

North Korea is reportedly imposing a ban on leather jackets and trench coats so that common people do not copy the style of their supreme leader, Kim Jong-un.

Radio Free Asia reported, citing sources in the country that authorities in North Korea are saying that it is disrespectful to copy the fashion choices of the country's leader.

Hence, they are cracking down on residents wearing leather trench coats and jackets in order to stop cheap imitations. The report also said that fashion police are patrolling the streets and they are confiscating the jackets from the sellers.

But soon the local garment makers began to import fake leather to make them domestically, providing it to the customers at comparatively lesser prices. The demand increased further after another TV appearance by Kim this year.

In his first public appearance in over a month, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un visited the northwestern city of Samjiyon, near China border, where his signature construction project is underway.

The North’s Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) said Kim visited the northern alpine city in Ryanggang Province to inspect progress on the final and the “third stage” of the development project, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

While KCNA did not give further details as to when Kim made the visit, it is the first report of public activity by the leader in 35 days, his longest absence since 2014. He last delivered a speech at an arms exhibition on October 11.

Kim praised officials for their “lofty loyalty, strong will and sweat” to push forward with the project and said the four-year construction proved “the iron will of our state to achieve prosperity our own way and with our own efforts”.

Canadian apparel company Reitmans recently cancelled a contract with a Chinese supplier after a report by CBC News showed that it was using forced North Korean labour. This comes after a series of undercover investigations by the broadcaster CBC.

Reitmans is not the only brand to be involved with this Chinese supplier. YM Inc, which owns various other brands such as Sirens, Stitches and Bluenotes, also did business with the same factory, Dandong Huayang Textiles and Garment Co. Ltd.

After the brands came to know about the forced labour scenario, YM said that it does not partner with anyone using forced labour.

Reitmans, which has over 400 outlets in the country, issued a statement saying that it decided to “proactively stop issuing new business purchase orders with this supplier” at the end of 2020 and also decided to “pull all remaining inventory” of the styles originating from this supplier.

As North Korea's economy is quickly deteriorating, the country's most vulnerable citizens are at greater risk of hunger.

For the past few months, Kim Jong un's-country has been experiencing a food crisis.

Experts have determined that, despite the ruling government's attempts to play it down, the situation is worse with each passing day.

Defectors based in South Korea have said that their family in the North are starving.

As winter approaches, there is worry that the most vulnerable may go hungry.

It's becoming more difficult to get information out of North Korea.

Since January of last year, the border has been blocked to prevent the spread of COVID-19 from China.

Even sending letters to relatives and friends who have defected to South Korea is fraught with danger.

North Korea has imposed severe rules to protect itself against the deadly coronavirus that struck the country last year.

As a result, the country's economy, particularly its commerce with its important partner, China, has suffered a significant setback.

North Korea has long had food shortages, but the coronavirus outbreak has exacerbated an already dire situation.

Kim Jong-un, the country's supreme leader, has compared the present situation to the country's biggest calamity, the "Arduous March," in the 1990s, when hundreds of thousands of people perished in a famine.

The situation isn't considered to be that awful — yet – and there are some encouraging indicators.

The North looks to be prepared to reopen its border with China, but it's unclear how much trade and help will be required to heal the poor country's economic damage.

(With inputs from agencies)

Reports of famine in North Korea as bad as 1990s amid mounting food insecurity

North Korea can get all the uranium it needs for nuclear weapons through its existing Pyongsan mill, and satellite imagery of tailings piles suggests the country can produce far more nuclear fuel than it is, a new academic study concludes.

Despite a self-imposed moratorium on nuclear weapons tests since 2017, North Korea has said it is continuing to build its arsenal, and this year it appeared to have restarted a reactor that is widely believed to have produced weapons-grade plutonium.

According to research published last month in the journal Science & Global Security by researchers at Stanford University and an Arizona-based mining consulting company, North Korea may be able to increase production, and has no need for other uranium mills.

"It is clear that the DPRK appears to have substantially more milling capacity than it has been using to date," said the report, using the initials of North Korea`s official name, the Democratic People`s Republic of Korea. "This means that the DPRK could produce much greater quantities of milled natural uranium if desired."

The Pyongsan Uranium Concentration Plant and its associated mine are North Korea`s only publicly acknowledged source of yellowcake, or uranium ore, according to analysts.

The report comes as other satellite imagery shows North Korea is building a large expansion at its Yongbyon nuclear reactor, which analysts say may be used to produce weapons-grade uranium.

"Given the DPRK’s active nuclear program, it is of utmost importance to assess and understand its nuclear materials production capabilities," wrote the report`s authors, who submitted their findings in April.

These capabilities govern the rate at which North Korea might expand its nuclear arsenal, determine the magnitude of the threat to international security and the challenge of potential nuclear disarmament, and measure North Korea`s ability to fuel its future nuclear energy program, the report said.

GROWING NUCLEAR ARSENAL

The question over how many nuclear weapons North Korea possesses is a key issue for intelligence agencies in South Korea and the United States, as well as for any talks aimed at limiting or reducing North Korea’s arsenal.

The United States, which wants Pyongyang to surrender its nuclear arsenal, has said it is open to meeting with North Korea without preconditions. North Korea says talks are only possible after the United States and its allies drop hostile policies.

Intelligence on North Korean nuclear weapons is limited, but David Albright, president of the Institute for Science and International Security, has told Reuters he estimates the country has the capacity to produce material for four to six warheads a year.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in September that North Korea’s "nuclear programme goes full steam ahead with work on plutonium separation, uranium enrichment and other activities."

There have been no reported accounts of outside inspector access to the Pyongsan uranium mine after the IAEA visited in 1992, leaving details of the mill uncertain, the academic report said.

The authors used artificial intelligence algorithms developed by Orbital Insight, a California-based geospatial analytics company, to analyse satellite imagery for land use patterns around the Pyongsan facility.

Yellowcake from the mine and mill is a key component of North Korea`s nuclear fuel production, including its 5-megawatt (MW) reactor, which is seen as capable of producing weapons-grade plutonium.

The IAEA and other analysts reported over the summer that the reactor appeared to be operating for the first time since 2018.

Kim Jong-un's bizarre food strategy: Orders North Koreans to eat 'delicious' black swans

According to media reports on Monday, the South Korean administration urged North Korea to accept Pope Francis' invitation to visit the nation, claiming that it would help to improve regional peace.

The Pope met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace on Friday.

The primary subjects covered at the meeting, according to local witnesses, were the difficulty of lowering tension on the Korean peninsula and the possibility of the pontiff visiting North Korea.

South Korea urges Kim Jong-un to accept proposal for Pope's visit to North Korea

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un has lost about 20 kilograms of weight, but remains healthy, South Korea’s spy agency told the lawmakers.

The National Intelligence Service claimed that he has been focussing on boosting public loyalty to him as the country faces widespread hunger and worsening economic problems.

The agency also dismissed rumours that the thinner Kim was actually a body double of the 37-year-old, calling the allegations as “groundless”.

According to reports, the spy agency gave the assessment during a closed-door parliamentary briefing on Thursday, saying it used artificial intelligence techniques, an analysis of super-resolution video of Kim and other methods to investigate Kim’s condition.

Kim’s appearance came into the limelight after the North Korean media released photos and videos of him, who seemed to appear thinner than before.

Despite Kim's thinner appearance, North Korean observers have said that the 37-year-old has no apparent health problems, and his weight loss is likely the result of his efforts to improve his physique.

They noted that he has continued his regular public activities and no unusual developments have been seen in North Korean videos.

The meeting came amid concerns over a crisis in a reclusive economy that has already been dogged by international sanctions, aimed at curbing its nuclear and weapons programmes.

In April, Kim had urged ruling party officials to wage another “Arduous March” of work and sacrifice, linking the current economic crises to a period in the 1990s of famine and disaster.

The period is often talked about as a historic event, but Kim’s apparent comparison to current problems came after he said the country faces the ''worst-ever situation.''
